Now it’s better weather to get out in the garden Bel has some tips on making your hanging baskets and pots look stunning. Sally is back with some advice on getting your feet ready for summer and Bonita gives us advice on keeping our eyes healthy in the sun. Our focus this month is on charity and we feature lots of local, national and even an overseas charity and give you details of how you can help and get involved. We are also proud to announce the total raised by you during our Air Ambulance appeal. A huge thank you to all who sponsored Andy, or who sent in donations or took part in our ‘Wear it Yellow’ day! We also look at how much Stephen Sutton has inspired people after raising over £3 million pounds for The Teenage Cancer Trust before sadly losing his battle against cancer on the 15th May. I’ve had a look at how the Trust helps local teenagers through their unit at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and again details are there if you’d like to find out more. As usual we have our competitions, recipe and some craft and baking articles to keep you going until we return next month with your July issue, which will be all about getting out and about in Leicestershire. WILL YOU BE ‘A BIT MORE STEPHEN’?
M
any of us have heard of Stephen Sutton, the teenager with terminal cancer who shot to fame with his bucket list. The country seemed to pull together to help him achieve his dreams; from breaking a world record, to hugging an elephant and having a tattoo! But his most famous item on the list was to raise funds for The Teenage Cancer Trust, he has now raised over £3.7 million pounds, the largest single amount raised on any Just Giving Page! He managed this by having fun, organising events for others to enjoy and not giving up or withdrawing from society. I’ve decided to take a closer look at the Teenage Cancer Trust in Leicestershire and wonder if we could each be ‘a bit more Stephen’ and push ourselves to raise funds for charity? • Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the seven young people aged between 13 and 24 diagnosed with cancer every day. • They build specialist units within NHS hospitals bringing young people together to be treated by teenage cancer experts in a place designed just for them. They want every young person with cancer to have access to this specialist support, no matter where they live. • Traditionally treated alongside children or elderly patients at the end of their lives, young people can feel extremely isolated during treatment, some never meeting another young person with cancer.
Being treated alongside others their own age can make a huge difference. • Teenage Cancer Trust empowers young people to take control of their health and speak up when something changes. Their pioneering Education team deliver positive and interactive free cancer awareness sessions in schools, colleges and universities on the signs of cancer, cancer treatments and prevention as well as healthy living. • Our Teenage Cancer Trust unit is at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, with the next nearest being Nottingham City Hospital. • Between them these units support 125 young adults with cancer. The running cost of the Leicester unit alone is over £120,000 per year. • They rely on donations to do their vital work and are always looking for support from the local community to organise fundraising events. Stephen sadly passed away on the 14th May but was fundraising up to the week of his death. I hope he has inspired many people to think about what they could achieve for the many charities that need our support. LOROS LADIES LUNCH

The LOROS Ladies Lunch is one of the charity’s longest running, much loved events with women from all over the County and beyond turning out to support LOROS. This year’s event raised almost £10,000 in just five hours! The ladies played stand-up bingo, purchased tickets for a raffle and stood in line to have their books signed by Julia Bradbury all to raise this incredible sum which will go directly towards patient care at the Hospice. Laura Betts, Fundraiser and Event Organiser said “It is such a privilege to be involved in this event. We receive incredible support year after year and we are already taking bookings for next year’s luncheon without having confirmed our Guest Speaker!
We are so lucky to have such dedicated supporters.” Not only did Julia entertain 600 ladies with her fabulous after dinner talk focussed around her career, passions and close-knit family but she also helped to put smiles on the faces of patients, staff and volunteers when she visited the Hospice on Wednesday morning prior to the luncheon. Diane Morris Fundraising Manager said “Julia became a Patron for LOROS back in September 2012 and there had been a great deal of excitement anticipating her visit. The whole day was a resounding success, her visit to the Hospice really helped to boost morale and with Julia’s help we then went on to raise almost £10,000 at the luncheon, we feel extremely privileged to have Julia as our Patron.” You can book now for the 2015 LOROS Ladies Luncheon now by calling the LOROS Fundraising Department on 0116 231 8431.

LOROS ONE BIG BIKE RIDE
Local charity LOROS is gearing up support for the annual bike ride at Rutland Water. This years One Big Bike Ride will be taking place on Sunday 8th June 2014 in the beautiful surroundings of Rutland Water. Registrations are coming through thick and fast and the organisers are all hoping for yet another great event. Set in 4200 acres of open countryside, Rutland Water Park is the central rural attraction in England's smallest county of Rutland and offers activities for all the family. There are plenty of places to eat along the route, including Whitwell, Empingham, Normanton and Barnsdale, or why not bring along a picnic. Cyclists can choose from a 7, 18 or 25 mile route. The 18 and 25 mile routes will start at 9.30am, with the 7 mile route starting at 10.30am. Entry prices are as follows: £5.00: Adults (£10.00 on the day) £2.50: Children (£5.00 on the day) £10.00: Family - 2 adults and 2 children (No family tickets available on the day) N.B Children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

LITTLE HATS GIVE BIG HELP ARE YOU A KNITTER OR DO YOU KNOW ONE? Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling for all knitters to join in The Big Knit this year to raise much-needed funds to help keep local older people warm and healthy this coming winter. Peter Ralphs, on behalf of this well-known local charity, said “We are so grateful to those who are already clicking away, though our 2014 drive has started rather slowly. Last year we received an incredible 42,000 little hats by September. Obviously we need lots of help to match this challenging total which will assist our Winter Warmth Campaign 2014. TWO TREATS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE!
The Loughborough Orchestra is sharing the stage with Newtown Linford Choral Society for its Summer Concert on June 21st this year. The programme is full of wonderful melodies to please the ear, kindle the imagination and lift the spirit! The main orchestra piece is Scheherazade, which was composed by Rimsky – Korsakov as a suite of four connected movements based on the “Arabian Nights” folk tales.

It was his intention to create music which brought to mind “numerous and varied fairy-tale wonders” which gave a distinctly Oriental impression. However, various friends persuaded him to give more specific titles to each of the four movements. So, the imagination can build pictures around The Sea and Sinbad's Ship, The Kalendar Prince, The Young Prince and The Young Princess and Festival at Baghdad.
To herald the concert, Tchaikovsky’s “Capriccio Italien” gives a rousing sound. It starts with a bugle call that Tchaikovsky heard whilst staying in Italy, which was played by Italian cavalry regiment. Later on, there are some rather more Spanish sounding passages – but then, he did regard it as a fantasy piece! A very different tone is set in the second half of the concert by the Newtown Linford Choral Society. The beautiful Requiem by Fauré provides an opportunity for the two groups to combine their talents. It is probably fair to say that this is one of the best loved settings of the Requiem with its ethereal and tuneful melodies.

SECRET CRAFT FAIR, 7TH & 8TH JUNE

ast year Janet Currie opened her garden to the public for the first time as part of the National Gardens Scheme, or ‘Yellow Book’ as it is often called. This was the first and only garden in the town to do so. As well as opening the garden, Janet – who works in the arts - also invited artists to take part in a Secret Craft Fair. This attracted over 350 visitors.
There are 57 gardens that open for the NGS in Leicestershire, many throughout June including Highfield House in Coalville on the 29 June; and Whatton Gardens, Kegworth on the 7 June. NGS Loughborough Open Gardens & Secret Craft Fair
This year another garden on Herrick Road will be joining her in opening for the NGS as well. ‘The whole idea was to get more people interested in participating and opening their gardens for charity, so I am delighted that Sarah at number 80 is now also part of the scheme.’

INGREDIENTS
• 4 chicken breasts, cubed • 2cm fresh ginger root, peeled and grated • 3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 1 small red chili, chopped and deseeded • 1 teaspoon ground coriander • 2 teaspoons garam masala • 1 red bell pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks • 1 medium sized onion, peeled and chopped • 2 tablespoons sunflower oil • 1 can plum peeled tomatoes • 2 tablespoons tomato puree • 100ml creme fraiche, or sour cream • Good handful of fresh coriander, finely chopped (garnish)
METHOD
• Method: In a processor place the ginger, garlic, chili, ground coriander, garam masala, red bell pepper, onion and sunflower oil. • Process until you achieve a paste. • Put the chicken in a bowl and add the paste. Stir and coat each chunk of chicken in the mixture. • Mix the tomato puree with the canned tomatoes. • Place the chicken into the crock pot and pour the tomato mixture over the top. • Cook on a medium heat for 4 -5 hours until the chicken is beautifully tender and succulent • When ready to serve gently stir in the creme fraiche whilst still in the slow cooker and serve on a bed of wild rice, garnished with the chopped coriander. The traditional method for making lemon curd takes about 45 minutes of constant stirring in a double boiler. This Thermomix method takes 5 to 7 minutes and makes about 300 to 350 g. The quantity is easily doubled ( cook 7 mins ) or trebled ( cook 10 mins ). • 75g granulated sugar • Thinly peeled skin of 1 large juicy lemon • Juice of the same lemon (about 35 to 45 g of juice) • 2 large eggs • 50 g unsalted butter
1. Grind lemon peelings and sugar 20 seconds/Speed 10 2. Add eggs, butter and lemon juice. Mix 10 seconds/Speed 6. 3. Scrape down the sides of the Thermomix bowl with the spatula. Cook 4 minutes/80 deg C Speed 4. If it hasn't thickened enough, continue to cook for 1 to 2 minutes more. 4. Spoon out into a bowl and leave to cool, or if conserving it, pour into sterilised jars and cover with sterilised lids.

NEW A4 BOOKLET PRINTED FOR THE MUSEUM The booklet about the carillon was last published many years ago and made no mention of the our museum but thanks to two of our volunteers, the support of Charnwood Borough Council and a Shire Grant from Leicestershire County Council it has been brought up to date, A4 size and full colour. Our thanks to Peter Minshall and Marigold Cleeve for their efforts, Marigold did the rewrite and Peter took and selected the many photographs that appear in the new edition.

WAR MEMORIALS PROJECT

The “At Risk” project is working to ensure the protection of “orphaned” war memorials, which are declining in their role as a focal point for their community and in some cases have been ejected from their original locations/ This project demonstrates the support for the local service people and particularly poignantly at this time fulfils the community’s promise to our dead. Liz Blood, Leicestershire County Council’s War Memorials Project Officer, will be giving a talk on Wednesday 7th May upstairs in the Great Chamber at Donington le Heath Manor House (pictured), beginning at 7.30pm to tie-in with the ‘Commemorating the Fallen’ exhibition on site. The illustrated talk will focus on the war memorials of Northwest Leicestershire, in particular WW1 memorials. It will be a pictorial tour of war memorials in the area from a historical, stylistic and commemorative perspective.

A GAS RATTLE
A WW2 Gas Rattle, we have been looking for one of these for some time, Mr Paul Sawbridge saw our appeal in the Loughborough Community Eye magazine and donated this one. It had belonged to Mr Jack Laxton and used at Leicester City matches. We were particularly interested in obtaining one that had been painted in football colours so as to be able to tell the two stories connected to these rattles. First their use as a warning device during WW2 and then when peace came, put to a far more pleasant use as a football rattle.

THE AIRBORNE ROOM
A MODEL ZEPPELIN This model has been a long time coming; from a request in this publication for someone to make a model for us, me losing the contact details of the person who offered, an email from Skytrex of Loughborough to say they had one, the sale falling through when they sold the military models to Red Eagle Miniatures in Coalville then failing to find anyone in the modelling world willing to put the kit together. Finally, there amongst our volunteers, was an accomplished model maker, Mr Steve Coltman, who has finally produced this
Lots of changes to the Airborne Room and an enormous improvement with many of the cabinets being re-furbished, the 82nd Airborne cabinet has been raised up to the same level as the other cabinets and the display much improved. The photo shows the cupboard doors unpainted but they are to be covered with some poster size photos. Mr Mike Johnson, who lives in America and whose father served in the 82nd at Quorn, was given the task of choosing which pictures we would use. The first one has been printed and the second one in the process of being produced.

We also have a display board dedicated to the Zeppelin Raid that we will bring into use in the future. One of the things we would like to achieve to commemorate the Great War is to campaign for a proper memorial to the victims of the Zeppelin Raid.
Credit must go to those volunteers who worked on the displays over the close season, in particular Pete Hancock who led the project, Tony Scutt who did the carpentry work and Paul Gould who did the LED lighting. SHORT STORIES WRITERS STILL WANTED! We need a number of pieces writing about Loughborough men who died during WW1 to feed to the Loughborough Echo on the 100th anniversary of their deaths over the next four years. LOCAL COMPANY SUPPORTS JACKSONVILLE MIRACLE LEAGUE USA Local company County Contractors have made strong links with an American charity and have set up a scholarship for disabled children. Jacksonville Miracle League provides opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to play baseball, regardless of their abilities. ‘We cannot change or cure the medical issues life has dealt them. What we can do is provide them with an opportunity to experience the joy and benefits that come from playing baseball. We believe every child deserves a chance to play baseball.’

Make The Most Of Your Conservatory More of us are adding a conservatory as a clever way of creating more living space. But with so many windows you can feel exposed and it can seem daunting to know where to begin to choose the right type of blind to reduce the suns glare and add protection for your furniture, while still giving you that wow factor... Before making a decision here are a few things to consider: What the room is being used for? Think about using a darker colour and/or a more opaque fabric to reduce glare in a TV room, lounge or home office. Go for one blind per glass panel if possible as smaller blinds are easier to operate; they may cost more initially but will last longer and be more reliable. Pleated roof blinds with a high performing reflective coating will give more protection to your furniture and be an investment in the longer term. It’s less critical to have reflective coated fabrics on the side windows, but pleated blinds are still a great choice as they fold away neatly. For a sleek and contemporary look opt for a pleated or Venetian blind in a Perfect Fit frame. This system requires no drilling or screws and gives enhanced privacy as the blinds ‘hug’ the window and cover any light gaps. SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB Shepshed Lions Club International are part of a worldwide organisation. Lions meet the needs of local communities and the world every day because they share a core belief - to serve their community.
Shepshed Lions Club are active fund raisers within the local community. The highlights of the year being the Annual Charity Carnival and the Santa Sleigh. Proceeds raised from its activities are donated to local worthy causes, the most recent being the Shepshed Food Bank and Shepshed Dynamo Youth Team. Shepshed Lions Club have set up a Community First Responder scheme to work along side East Midland Ambulance Service. They respond to 999 calls in their surrounding area, with the aim of responding within minutes and treating patients whilst paramedics travel to the scene. The scheme has volunteers from both Shepshed Lions Club and members of the public. In April the scheme was presented with an Ambulance branded car which can be seen regularly around the town.

SHEPSHED VOLUNTEER CENTRE Shepshed Volunteer Centre is a valuable community resource helping some of the most vulnerable and isolated people in Shepshed since 1983. I am the Activities Support Worker at the centre, and look after approx 100 volunteers who help the local community. There are three main services running from the centre:
• A Social Transport Scheme taking elderly and disabled people to appointments at the doctors, the hospital or the hairdressers to name a few. • A Gardening Scheme - a team of gardeners go to local resident’s houses and take care of the garden they are no longer able to manage themselves. • A Befriending Scheme - where we visit local residents in their own home for a chat or a social visit and also our new scheme of community connectors, where our aim is to bring those who have lost their social circles back into an interactive social environment. • We also run some other schemes from here, such as our Jigsaw Library, Community Lunches and a services booklet containing details of clubs, groups and organisations for people needing help in and around Shepshed. We also hold a youth volunteering event each year, funding permitting, enabling up to 300 young people aged 10 - 14 to volunteer in the local community doing activities such
as gardening, making and selling cakes and holding a community lunch for the elderly and carers in Shepshed. This year's event will be held week commencing the 9th June 2014, and we will be in and around Shepshed during that week, please do say hello to the young volunteers if you see them out volunteering! They will also be selling cakes they have made to raise money for charity, so please pop along if you are available. Shepshed Open Gardens will also be running this year on 5th and 6th July 2014. There will be 14 gardens open in Shepshed from 1-6pm on that weekend, programmes are available from Shepshed Volunteer Centre, The Shepshed Show and participating gardens. We will also be present at the Shepshed Show on June 21st, so if you are thinking of volunteering for our schemes or anything else locally, please come and see me.

W
ith summer fast approaching it’s time to plant up hanging baskets and containers to give a cheery splash of colour around the house during the sunny months. I usually go for a couple of hanging baskets and a selection of large pots which are close to the garden hose to make watering easy. For those who don’t have the facilities to raise their own hanging basket and bedding plants themselves, late May & Early June is the best time to visit the local Nursery or Garden Centre to select ready grown plants. Basket and bedding plants don’t respond well to frost and cold winds so waiting until all risk of frost has past before planting out will save money and a return trip to buy replacements for those lost to the cold! I must have planted up tens of thousands of hanging baskets and planters over the years whilst working at plant nurseries. Whether it’s a traditional style or a contemporary colour theme that’s required there are plenty of suitable plants to choose from. See my favourites below.
PLANTING UP A BASKET OR POT Wire baskets allow you to plant through the sides for a spectacular display. To do this, use a pair of scissors to poke through the moss/fibre and then puncture through the plastic liner. Using about 6 small plants, gentle push the roots through the holes to the inside of the basket. To plant the top of the wire baskets and plant wicker baskets & pots, loosely fill with compost to just below the rim. Start with the larger plants first, gently firming the compost around the roots. Continue, making sure that the compost surface remains just below the edge of the basket/ pot, to help with watering. Water the basket/pot well and allow to settle for a few days in a sheltered spot. A little deadheading will be necessary and feeding with Tomato fertiliser throughout the summer will ensure a continuation of blooms. Watering everyday may be required during hot spells.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT BASKET OR CONTAINER From experience I recommend choosing hanging baskets & pots 14” or larger as anything smaller is difficult to look after and keep watered once the summer has arrived. Wire baskets need some sort of attractive liner. I use fresh moss layering 1” over the entire frame, but an alternative fibre liner is also suitable. Both wire and wicker baskets must then have a plastic liner, I simply use an old compost bag with the black side facing out & trimmed level with the rim. A few holes punctured in the base will aid drainage. A quality compost mix is vital if the basket or pot is going to look good all summer long. I use good multi-purpose compost and add water retaining granules and a slow release fertiliser- these are available from the nursery or garden centre.

MY RECIPE FOR 14” HANGING BASKET OR POT x1 Pelargonium (centre), x1 Trailing Fuchsia, x1 Trailing Petunia, x1 Ivy Leaf Geranium, x3 Nemesia/Diascia, x3 Verbena/Nepeta. For Wire baskets use the following additions for side planting:- x2 Nepeta, x2 Bacopa, x2 Verbena. MY FAVOURITE HANGING BASKET AND CONTAINER PLANTS Pelargonium – AKA Upright geraniums, these are great in pots or to add height to baskets. Good for sunny spots. Fuchsias – available as bush or trailing these will flower nonstop with a little deadheading. Available in a huge range of colour and flower shapes. These are particularly good in shady areas. Verbena – there are lots of colours available, some are true trailers whilst others will keep compact. Bacopa – lovely small white, blue or blooms on neat trailing plants. COLOUR COMBINATIONS Try selecting plants based on a colour theme for truly gorgeous baskets and containers. Some of the bespoke baskets I have created over the years include: Blue/ Lilac/Pink, Pure White, Blue/ Gold & Purple/Magenta, to name but a few. With a few baskets and pots planted you’re set for a colourful summer! Not all of us have time to care for these abundant beauties so next month I’ll be looking at which plants to choose if you need a low maintenance garden to suit a busy lifestyle.

Steps Conductive Education Centre work hard every day to help the lives of young people who are affected with Motor Dysfunction or delay across the East Midlands. Situated in Shepshed they rely on donations and fundraising to carry out their important work. Conductive Education was pioneered in Hungary in the 1940’s by Dr Andras Peto. The method of teaching allows more children to be kept in mainstream schools. Conductive Education is a holistic approach centred on the child not the disability, the process - in which play is an integral element - stimulates continuous development in bodily control, mobility and communication, transforming the child’s confidence, motivation and well-being. Founded 18 years ago Steps only moved into to their purpose built home in 2007, prior to that they were renting rooms to carry out their vital work. Their luck changed when Patron Rosemary Conley funded a move which involved local tradesmen helping out and converting the old school building on Loughborough Road into the fantastic facility they have today, part of which is rented to Glebe House. 26 families are currently on the books and Steps is their life line, not only providing conductive education for the children but also supporting parents too, as living with a disabled child is physically and emotionally exhausting and being able to talk with parents who are walking a similar path is vital. Steps also organise days out for the families which means parents can feel confident going out to public places with their child knowing they have the support of Steps if they encounter difficulties or prejudice. BUSES IN LOUGHBOROUGH
T
here has a constant debate in the town about bus routes, a bus station, and more recently, whether buses should pass through pedestrians in the new pedestrianised town centre. The last of these has at least achieved a solution, at least a trial solution, which will see buses not passing through pedestrians, however, as has been made clear to us by the bus companies - they set their routes, not the County Council, and it will be for the operators to make the 18month trial work, even though it wasn’t the solution they wanted. However, the point about the bus companies being independent from County Council control is relevant to the second most talked about issue, that of building a mew bus station in Loughborough, to replace the one closed in the late 1990’s. The Borough Council often gets asked the question ‘why don’t you do something about it?’, possibly because people know that it owned the land that the last one sat on, but possibly because people don’t realise that the Borough doesn’t deal with transport matters or the bus operators. The Borough did recently look at the one site it owns in central Loughborough, that might have been large enough for a bus station, to see if that was a possible site for any bus station builder – however, it understandably got a cool reception from the residents adjacent to it, and was deemed too far from the town centre and ‘less than satisfactory’ by those that looked into it. All remaining potential sites in central Loughborough are in private ownership, and would have to be purchased by whoever decided to build the bus station, at the commercial market value for the land. Which also raises the question as to who would fund and operate any future bus station – would it be the County Council (who are responsible for transport matters in Leicestershire) or the bus operators themselves?
Whilst the provision of a bus station is an ongoing discussion, we do need to ask an honest and straightforward question to the two organisations that are most likely to be linked to it – are either of you willing to fund the £5-6million needed to buy a site and build the facility, and likewise, perhaps we need to ask ourselves, are we, the residents, willing to pay for it through increased taxes or fares?

n 1st April 1974, Charnwood District Council (a couple of months later it was granted Borough status instead, to enable the creation of the Mayoralty) came into existence, along with many other local government districts and authorities up and down the country. Whilst this is probably not an event to necessitate bringing out the bunting, or popping champagne corks, it has been interesting to look at what has changed over that time, and also what hasn’t. Whilst there isn’t one single councillor who has spanned the whole period, one, Cllr Richard Shepherd, has represented Quorn since 1979, and certainly provides an excellent summary of his 36 years as ‘Cllr Charnwood’ whether it be as a backbencher, or Council Leader. Talking to Richard at the recent Annual Council Meeting at Loughborough Town Hall, I certainly got the impression that whilst the finances may be tighter than ever, the Council is actually doing far more than it ever has done, and working more closely with other bodies to achieve results. Certainly, Charnwood has a reputation nationally for its ability to work with the private, public and third sectors to get things done. I suspect everyone notices whether the bins have been collected, or the flowerbeds weeded, but few are probably aware of the amazing work carried out with our Borough’s troubled families, the charities supported to support those with mental health issues, or indeed the support given to get young people into paid apprenticeships.

MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT VISITS SHEPSHED CHURCH The Rt Honourable Nicky Morgan MP paid a visit to Charnwood Road Baptist Church Lunch Club recently. The Rev. Howard Ketton welcomed her and congratulated her on her recent appointment to the post of Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Minister for Women. She shared lunch with church members, which was served in the church because there was more space, followed by a talk on her work as our constituency MP. She began her talk by saying that since she had been an MP there had been many ‘firsts’ and eating Steak Pie in a church was yet another. She spoke of her work and life balance and said that she leaves home on Monday morning returning on Thursday, working from several offices, but is well supported by her staff.
She said she was very pleased to be called Minister for Women and spoke a little about what this entailed. Nicky then went on to say that although MPs had earned a bad name through the expenses scandals etc. she found that most of them were working very hard for their constituents, whether the problems were large or small. Her Christian Faith was important and she said that she attended a church in Loughborough and helped at Sunday School once a month. She talked a bit about the Christian witness in the House of Commons and the fact that she attends a weekly Bible Study group where Christian colleagues share their problems and strengthen each other through prayer. Church members were then able to ask her questions which she was more than willing to answer covering issues that are affecting our community - housing, problems of older people and employment. Finally the Rev. Ketton thanked Nicky for finding time in her very busy schedule to spend time with us.
THE GLENMORE CENTRES AGM The Glenmore Centres AGM will be held on the 9th June at 7.30pm. After the election of the trustees a talk will be given by a representative of the Shepshed Food Bank. Refreshment will be served afterwards. Everyone is invited and we would love to see some new faces.

Several members of Chera Voce - the vocal harmony singers from Shepshed - sang a programme of pieces from Broadway and West End musicals, Gospel music and Opera chorus at HSBC bank in Loughborough on 17th April (Maundy Thursday). Singers, under the musical directorship of Marilyn Ashwell and accompanied by Shirley Lakin, were performing in aid of Loughborough HSBC’s chosen charity for this year, The Matt Hampson Foundation. ne of my recent visits was to learndirect in Loughborough, the local provider of the Work Programme in partnership with A4e. It was encouraging to hear about the number of long-term job seekers who are finding sustainable jobs and also the support given to ESA claimants looking for work too. I sat in on an excellent training session about building confidence to help those looking for work identify the skills they had which they could offer to a potential employer. Learndirect also have an enterprise coach to offer support if the best route for someone is to set up or resume their own business.
Rail and will encourage more UK content including manufacturing in the East Midlands. As Loughborough’s MP I worked with MPs on all sides and lobbied everyone from the Prime Minister, Chancellor and then Transport Secretary, to secure the electrification of the Midland Main Line which was announced in July 2012. My meeting with EPS showed just how many local businesses and suppliers will be able to benefit from this major Government investment in our local infrastructure.
The latest employment figures show a record number of people now in work in Britain. In our area the number of unemployed claimants in April 2014 was 805. This represents a rate of 1.7% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64 and is 87 lower than in March 2013 and 82 lower than in February 2014. Every job gained is a huge success for the person looking for work and their family and provides greater security for them.
Later this year we will, of course, be marking the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. I was recently invited by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to visit Loughborough cemetery with them and see the 81 commonwealth graves and distinctive headstones there which they carefully look after. I have to say that although I had been to the cemetery before I had not properly taken on board the war graves there nor stopped to appreciate the sacrifice made by all those who died in the First World War and subsequent conflicts.
At the end of April I visited the offices of EPS UK Ltd in Loughborough. EPS UK demonstrated a new type of substation for use adjacent to railway tracks providing power to locomotives. The substations could be used on Midland Main Line and other major rail electrification projects over the next five years. The substation is based on a new design developed by Network
One of the events to be held in Loughborough to remember the War will be the re-positioning of the memorials at All Saints Church in the centre of town next March. I would like to congratulate the project team, led so ably by Bill Brookman and Charnwood Arts, who have successfully bid for a Heritage Lottery Fund to support the Charnwood Great War Centenary Project plans.

JHON’S WEIGHT LOSS HAS GONE SWIMMINGLY! A 17-year-old from Coalville has lots to celebrate after losing 3st 7lb to reach the finals of a national slimming competition where he met Olympic swimming sensation Rebecca Adlington. Jhon Bateman was delighted to make the final 44 in Slimming World’s Young Slimmer of the Year 2014 competition out of all 11,000 Slimming World groups across the UK and Ireland. The competition recognises the enormous achievements of young people aged 16 to 21 in making long-term lifestyle changes to become fitter, healthier and happier. Obesity is not just a problem for adults in the UK and Ireland. Many young people are so severely overweight that they’re beginning to suffer serious health conditions like Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure – conditions which would normally be associated with people of their parents’ or grandparents’ generation, so there is a huge need for healthy lifestyle support for young people and their families. Slimming World’s programme for young people aged 11 to 15 allows them to attend a group for free when they join with a parent or guardian,* and the club has a reduced weekly fee of £3.95 (€7.50 in RoI) for 16 and 17 year olds. Jhon, who was an Olympic torch bearer last year, joined the Whitwick Slimming World group in September 2013. He says: “I used to feel like I was different from all my friends, I felt like I stood out because I was bigger and I couldn’t always do the same things, shop at the same high street stores or wear the same clothes as them. It affected my confidence and I didn’t want to be like that for the rest of my life. I wanted to make changes and I knew I needed help to do that.” “I heard about Slimming World from my occupational therapist. When I decided to join the Whitwick group, I was really nervous but everyone was friendly and helpful. It was much easier than I expected to start making healthy choices and I soon realised that I didn’t need to make drastic changes, just small things like swapping white bread for wholemeal and starting to cook healthy meals instead of buying junk food or just putting convenience foods in the microwave made a big difference. I picked up lots of recipes and tips in the group – I’m actually not a bad cook now – and the encouragement I got from the other members and my Consultant Sharon really kept me going, even if I had a difficult week.” Since that first visit Jhon has lost 3st 7lb, going from 15st 12lbs to 12st 5lbs, and feels great. His fellow members in the Whitwick group voted for him to represent them in the Young Slimmer of the Year competition and he was invited to the semi-finals, which were held at Slimming World’s head office in Alfreton. It was there he met Rebecca Adlington who swapped swimming for slimming to come along to Slimming World, which is close to her hometown of Mansfield, and make the day extra special for the youngsters taking part.
Rebecca won two gold medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympics and two bronze medals at London 2012 and is the current world record holder in the 800m Freestyle. She says: “I loved meeting all of the young people at the competition, including Jhon. I’m so proud of all that I’ve achieved in my swimming career, but now my passion is to help more young people learn to swim. Being active is so important for your health. Teenagers and young people get a bad reputation because we think of them all sitting in front of the TV or a computer but the young slimmers I met, like Jhon, have shown that their health is important to them and that given the right tools it is possible to make positive changes whatever your age.” Sharon Dawson, who runs the Whitwick Slimming World group which Jhon attends, agrees: “Everyone is so proud of Jhon. What he’s achieved is so much more than just losing weight. The changes Jhon has made now have given him the knowledge and skills to make healthy choices and new active habits that will stand him in good stead for the rest of his life. Most of all it’s given him the self-belief and confidence to achieve his dreams, and hopefully meeting Rebecca has inspired him even more.” Unfortunately Jhon wasn’t the overall winner of the competition but anyone who’s been inspired about his story is welcome at the Whitwick Slimming World group at Hall Lane Methodist Church every Monday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm or for more information they can call Sharon on 07855 250017

ROLLS-ROYCE RETIRED EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION The members of the Rolls-Royce Retired Employees Association spent an enjoyable day at the Malvern Spring Show and despite the heavy showers on the way there,they had a rain free afternoon with warm sunshine. Most of the members arrived home with plants and garden accessories The Walk & Talk's May walk was held on May 6th and everyone met at Ticknall Village Hall Car Park, 32 walkers took part in the walk that ventured into the Calke Abbey Estate and then into the old Tramway Tunnel and then down to Staunton Harold Reservoir then back into Calke passing through the woods with the Bluebells in glorious colour. After the walk the majority of the walkers went to "The Crewe & Harpur at Swarkestone for lunch. The “This That and the Other” Group have spent two sessions making bracelets and necklaces from paper and all have been amazed at the results of their work. These will go towards the Shoebox Appeal which the group are supporting.
The Association embark on their most ambitious excursion in June with an 8 day holiday in Lake Garda following which they have planned trips to The National Memorial Arboretum , David Austin Roses and Cosford, Southport and Greenwich. The Association is hosting a show by Belcanto, called “Only Remembered”. This commemorates the start of the Great War. The show takes place on the evening on Friday, 25th July at 7-30 pm in the Nightingale Hall on Moor Lane. It will be an evening of humour, remembrance and audience participation. Tickets are £5 each and Belcanto are donating all proceeds to Help for Heroes. ‘INTO THE VALLEY’ ROTARY DONATION
"Into the Valley...." was a line from The Charge of the Light Brigade' that two Shepshed Charnwood Rotarians, Paul Miles and Peter Hickling, did not expect to hear on their recent visit to Sutton Bonington Primary School. After all, they were there to donate money to further expand the facilities for the pupils to grow their own produce.
Listening to several poetry recitals from a range of authors was a real treat as each one was read with clarity and emotion and, even more surprisingly, no prompts. This was part of an inter schools event which the Rotarians were lucky enough to be invited to share.

Open Box Promotions Ltd, the home of Your Local and Community Eye magazines, took part in the Big Business Challenge competing against other business’ to try and raise as much money as possible for DLR Air Ambulance in just a few weeks! In addition to our ‘Wear it Yellow’ day, On Friday 14th February Andy from Open Box Promotions did a sponsored walk from Leicester Forest East to Coalville to raise much needed funds for Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance service.
They were instructed in the finer points of Lego block building by the members of the school council. These pupils are elected by their peers to discuss issues and ideas from their own classes, and then feed back any decisions made. One such idea was to purchase a quantity of building blocks that could be used by the school to help develop social and communication skills whilst also having some fun.
The Rotary club were pleased to be able to donate a sum of money to this worthwhile project. The money came from part of the collection taken locally by Santa and the Rotary float and Head Teacher Stephen Dunn and council coordinator Rachel Abbott thanked all who had contributed.

Love Your Feet! FUNGAL NAIL INFECTION
As I sit here to start writing, I am aware of my stiff neck from the spring digging in the allotment. The usual aching knees that I get at the end of each day are brought on from years of football, long distance running and old age. Together with my slipped disc, you must see that I am well qualified to talk about aches and pains. However, I still manage to have a very active life. In fact I tell my wife that I am a walking miracle! Homeopathy can be of great benefit for aches and pains regardless of their cause. The key when deciding which remedy to use is their modalities: these three remedies have their own ‘keynotes’ which you have to match up with the type of pain that you are experiencing. Bryonia 30 is helpful when pain increases with even the slightest movement, with stitching pain and worsens with change in weather. Rhus Tox 30 is indicated when the pain is better for movement, pressure or heat application, but is worse for sitting still. Ruta Grav 30 seems to act on a deeper pain, that is typically worse at night or lying down and if the pain is less during the daytime.

It can be that more than one remedy is indicated so it is fine to alternate them. Take up to 4 doses a day (dissolved under the tongue) until the pain subsides. Finally if the problem seems to have started after a bump or fall take a few doses of Arnica 30 and then assess the situation. All of these natural supplements are highly effective both for the initial pain relief and repairing damaged tissue and joints. Finally, I would like to recommend a couple of manipulative techniques that I have found very helpful. The Alexander Technique is a gentle system that reprograms your movement through classes that teach you to move in a much more natural way. HERE COMES THE SUN We all know by now what damage over exposure to UV rays can do to our skin, but have you considered the damage it can do to your eyes? Sunburn isn’t just limited to your skin, your eyes can get burnt too. Over-exposure to ultraviolet light, such as a day at the beach without proper eye protection, can cause a temporary but painful burn to the surface of the eye, similar to sunburn on the skin.

Whilst this sounds particularly unpleasant, it is the risk of developing cataracts that makes over exposure so dangerous for your eyes. The damage occurs by too much UVA and UVB light entering the eye. Your eye needs light to work, but in particularly sunny conditions, this means an increase of harmful rays hitting the retina. The main way to protect your eyes against damage is to wear
Fungal nail infection often starts as a skin infection (athletes foot) and creeps on slowly and unnoticed. Like athletes foot it thrives in warm, damp, dark conditions. It is characterised by discolouration of the nail which usually appears yellow, brown or white in colour and nails can become thickened, brittle and porous. It can be a huge source of embarrassment especially in the summer months when choice of footwear would be sandals or open toe shoes. The condition often starts as a small patch in the large toe nail and can eventually affect all nails if untreated. Treatment usually requires a two pronged approach of removing as much of the diseased nail as possible and treating topically with a lacquer or liquid painted onto the nail regularly to inhibit growth of the fungus. Various
sunglasses which can filter out the UVA and UVB rays, whilst still allowing sufficient light in for you to see. Not all sunglasses have lenses that are of a high enough quality to do this, so it is important that you check the lenses are 100% UV filters. And it’s not just light from the sun reflected light from surfaces such as snow or water can intensify the amount of UV being absorbed by your eyes, therefore. sunglasses are vital if you are in these conditions on a frequent basis. As with all eye care, you need to consider the purpose of your sunglasses. Wrap around styles might be better for winter sports, where as tinted lenses could prove to be better for general wear outdoors. Either way, looking after your eyes and protecting them against the sun is a vital part of your optical care. So whilst you’re

Consistent application of products and filing is key and it can take up to eighteen months to eradicate depending on severity of the infection and rate of nail re-growth. Professional help may be needed to remove the diseased nail. Oral medication may sometimes be prescribed by the GP but is known to have side effects. Like athletes foot, fungal nail infection can spread from person to person, so good foot hygiene such as separate towels is important and early identification will mean a shorter length of time for treatment . The Bridge is a registered charity which has a strong reputation throughout the region. It delivers a number of housing related support services to homeless and vulnerably housed people in the Borough of Charnwood, Leicestershire and Rutland and has gained national recognition for developing best practice in a number of areas. BETHANY AND FRIENDS DONATE TO CHARITY
The two friends had a laugh about the amount of clothes and trinkets they had and how they hated to throw things away.
Summer had almost arrived and Bethany was emptying her house ready to give it a good clean, one by one she moved everything out into the garden so she could wipe down the walls, mop the floors and polish the windows till they sparkled.
Daniel Dog was walking past on his afternoon stroll when he heard the laughing, “What’s going on here then?” He said “Someone moving house?!”
She hopped out with a basket of hats and scarves then back in again, then she hopped out with a box of baking trays, then back in again. This went on for quite some time! Christie cat had heard the rattling of boxes and popped her head over the wall to find out what was going on. She could barely see Bethany over the huge pile of boxes!
Christie and Bethany explained what was going on and why they were laughing. “You don’t need to throw things you don’t use anymore away, have you considered donating it to charity?”
Bethany was just coming out of the house with another basket of hats when Christie asked her what she was doing. “I’m emptying my house so I can clean it,” Said Bethany “But I didn’t realise I had so much stuff! I don’t remember buying most of it and I’m sure I haven’t worn half of these hats!” Christie replied “It’s good to empty rooms out sometimes, I really need to do my house. I always find things I forgot I had or that I don’t use and are just taking up space”. “I don’t think it will all fit back in!” Joked Bethany. “I’m sure this can’t all me mine!”

Daniel went on to explain that there were many charity shops in the town who needed second hand clothes and trinkets. He explained that they sell them to help raise money for good causes. Bethany though that this was a brilliant idea and so once she had finished cleaning, Christie and Daniel helped her to sort out what she wanted to keep and what she wanted to donate. The following day the friends all took Bethany’s donations to the local charity shop who were very happy to receive them. Bethany felt very happy to have made a difference to others by giving away things she didn’t want any more. Well done Bethany, giving to charity is a very kind thing to do. Can you think of anything you don’t use any more, or any clothes you have grown out of that you could donate? Why not ask your parents to help you sort your bedroom out and take some items down to a charity shop?

HOW YOU DO IT: • We used strips of coloured paper: two 1/2- by 11-inch ones for each leg, and two 1/4- by 11-inch ones for each arm. Help your child glue the ends of 2 strips together, forming a right angle (A). • Then show them how to alternately fold the strips over each other (B and C), creating springy, accordionlike folds. When they reach the ends of the strips, glue them together. Repeat for each arm and leg. • With tape or a low-temperature glue gun (an adult’s job), attach the completed limbs to a plastic spoon, then add a paper mouth, eyes, and hair. For curly hair, just roll paper strips around a pencil. Allow the glue to dry, and the spoonfolk are ready to play.

BREAD ROLLS • 500g strong white flour • 25g butter • 1 tbsp sugar • Pinch of salt • 1 tsp yeast • 320ml warm water • Herbs (optional) METHOD • Into a bowl combine the flour, sugar, salt, yeast and any chopped herbs. • Rub in the butter. • Make a well and pour in half the water. Start to combine the mixture with your hands. Slowly
add more water until you can bring the dough together. You may not need all of the water. • Knead for 5 mins then place the dough back in the bowl, cover with cling film and leave in a warm place to prove for 1 hour. • Form the dough into the bread you’d like. • Place the dough on a floured baking tray and leave to prove once more for about 20 mins. Heat oven to 200C. Egg wash the bread and bake for approx 20 mins. The bread should have a hard crust and sound hollow when tapped, when done.
