Swannington Heritage Trust A Chance To Make A Difference Have you ever felt that you would like to make a noticeable difference to your community? Well that’s what our Land Management Volunteers do on Wednesday and Friday mornings.
Loughborough Male Voice Choir Gala Concert News Loughborough Male Voice Choir, The Burton Consort, Charnwood Concert Band, soloists Caroline Sharpe and Lyndon Gardner perform “The World in Union” as the finale of LMVC’s Golden Jubilee Gala Concert to a wonderful audience of around 400 people including the Mayor of Charnwood. What a night!!
Facilitating Walkers’ Access Walking is one of the most popular leisure activities in the UK. About 13,500 people walk through our woodlands each year. Our volunteers frequently receive feedback from walkers that using our sites is so enjoyable because the paths are well maintained. If you are walking past Hough Mill and would like to look inside, then provided our volunteers have the keys they will open up for you. Not all of our volunteers are history experts, but they will do their best to help. Nurturing Woodlands Left to their own devices woodlands rapidly become inaccessible. Our volunteers prune trees and shrubs, fell dead trees, cutback brambles and control bracken. We also rejuvenate the gorse bushes in the Gorse Field, split and transplant snowdrops, create log piles for insects and maintain ponds as wildlife havens.
John Holt receives Honorary Life Membership of LMVC in recognition of his commitment and contribution to the choir for 48 of the choir’s 50 years of existence. Certificate presented by the Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor Pauline Ranson.
Heritage Conservation What makes us different to wildlife conservation groups is that we also have a heritage conservation role. Projects include painting coal mine wheels, conserving a 19th century winding engine, repairing a horse gin and looking after the remnants of former coal mine and railway buildings.
With A Voice Of Singing
Comradeship Perhaps the most important element of our team is that our volunteers enjoy working together, swapping tales during the coffee break and sharing a joke. We are fortunate to have great volunteers, but work opportunities always exceeds our capacity. A few more helpers would make a big difference, so come along and see what we do; to find out more email chairman@ swannington-heritage.co.uk or phone 01530 222 833. Christmas at the Mill - 2pm Sunday 3rd December Enjoy the start of the Christmas season by visiting our 200 year old Hough Mill. Admire the decorations put up by Teddy Miller and his family. Meet Santa. Have a go at traditional games and craft activities. Munch on a cake or hot dog, washed down with a cup of hot chocolate or mulled wine. Hough Mill is accessed by a 300 metre track from St George’s Hill, Swannington, LE67 8QW. See our website www.swannington-heritage.co.uk or Hough Mill Facebook page for more details.
In addition to a wonderful night being had by all, the event raised over a £1000 for the Rainbows Children’s and Young Persons Hospice.
Loughborough Male Voice Choir will be running their very popular “Men – Learn to sing Harmony” course again in January 2018. The first course attracted 26 students, many of whom had never done any formal singing before but just had a love of singing. At the end of the six week course the students impressed an invited audience in a small concert performing pieces they had learned on the course and they also joined in performances with the established choir members. The choir were delighted when more than a dozen of the course members decided to join on a permanent basis. If you would like to find what voice type you are (Bass, Baritone, Tenor), how to control your breathing when singing, how to blend your voice with others in harmony singing or how to find your way round a musical score, then this is the course for you. No previous experience is required. All you need is the ability to hold a tune, enthusiasm for singing and a willingness to work to improve. Best of all, the course is entirely free with no obligations other than to enjoy the six-week singing course experience. The course will take place from 7.15pm until 9.15pm on Thursday evenings from January 11th, 2018 to February 15th, 2018. The venue is Trinity Methodist Church Centre, Royland Road, Loughborough, LE11 2EH. For more information or to book a place, please contact Chris Higgins, Choir Chairman, on 01509 569711 or email info@loughboroughmvc.co.uk

Great Central Railway Closes Greenacres Cafe The Great Central Railway has closed the Greenacres cafe which is close to its southern terminus at Leicester North station. The decision has been taken after a review of its sustainability following a number of years of trading. Despite the determined efforts of staff, while the business units have been filled, the cafe has struggled to turn a profit. This is of course a concern for any business and for the Railway particularly, which is sustained substantially by charitable donations and the efforts of unpaid volunteers. Director and General Manager of the Great Central Railway Michael Gough said, “This is a difficult decision and not one we have taken lightly. While the Greenacres cafe has proved to be popular with some visitors it has not attracted anywhere near enough custom to prove commercially viable. Following consultation with staff and Leicester City Council the cafe closed on the 1st November.” The Greenacres site is adjacent to the Leicester North terminus of the Great Central Railway. This is where Leicester City Council, the Great Central Railway and the National Railway Museum are collaborating to build a new railway museum. The project has been earmarked for £10m of National Lottery funding. Michael continued, “The exciting museum project continues apace and we are currently planning for the doors to open in 2021. In the long term, as befits a major new visitor attraction for Leicester, we expect to be able to provide a new catering facility at the museum. Subject to further planning that may well include reopening Greenacres cafe.” Visitors to the Great Central will still be able to purchase tickets and light refreshments at Leicester North station itself. The other units on the Greenacres site are not affected by the closure of the cafe and will continue to be home to local traders and businesses.

Carolling Christmas Is Coming! Loughborough Baptist Church is looking forward to presenting a morning of Christmas music and songs on the morning of December 9th 2017 This has been a popular event in the run up to Christmas for the last seven years and promises to be another joyful occasion this year! This is a “drop-in” morning which features a variety of musical performers and styles, from popular Christmas classic songs on the organ, handbells with children, and singing groups with different sounds. You may have never heard the lovely sound of a flute ensemble - but here you can - along with more traditional groups of instruments. Loughborough is fortunate to have a wealth of musical talent and the Daytime Orchestra and Choir will make their first visits here this year. There will be delicious refreshments with simple lunches on offer. A craft and bakes stall will tempt you to take something away with you. There is no charge but there will be an opportunity to donate to Barnado's. Why not spend a little time to savour some Christmas cheer and give a little to make the lives of vulnerable children better?
Christmas Presents Stolen From The Great Central Railway The Great Central Railway has had 370 Christmas presents stolen from one of its carriages at Quorn station. Spokesman Michael Stokes said “Sometime in the last two weeks, one of our carriages has been broken into and 370 presents have been stolen. The presents were to be donated to the Leicester Royal Infirmary children’s ward and Rainbows. All of them were wrapped ready for delivery. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those people who have donated replacement presents already.” The police are investigating the incident and have asked anyone with any information to get in touch.

Can You Help Identify These Badges? Struggling to identify this badge, it may have a connection with the Indian Army and is probably Victorian but both those are assumptions. Someone out there will tell us?
What’s New? A very generous donation of medals by Mr Adam Lowe of Oakham, The First World War medals of Troopers: William Dawkins, Phillip Wacks (Later commissioned), Victor Colman, William Ockenden, John W Hope, Thomas Yeoman and F M Morris. All of the Leicestershire Yeomanry. Also the Death Plaque of Tpr Victor Colman killed 4 April 1918, a locket with an unidentified soldier wearing a pre-1916 Leicestershire Yeomanry cap badge and a Silver War Badge (SWB) to Tpr William Dawkins. The SWB was awarded to men discharged from the forces during WW1 (mostly when wounded). They could wear it on their civilian jacket to let people know they had ‘done their bit’ so would not be accused of shirking their duty or being handed a white feather.
Good Luck In The Future! We have had to say goodbye to two of our volunteers, Steven & Eva, as they move to Guilford. As a token, they were presented with wine glasses engraved with a message expressing our appreciation for their contribution to the museum. We wish them the very best in their new home. Pictured are Steven and Eva with Peter Minshall who made the presentation.
Here is the other one we are unsure about, don't jump in with Coldstream Guards as we are not convinced. We believe it is helmet or shako badge of the Victorian era. Any positive ID? This rather unremarkable lapel badge recently came into our possession, a Canadian General Service lapel badge instituted in 1940 for those who had seen active service overseas. It was the reverse that makes it interesting, stamped on it is the warning, 'PENALTY FOR MISUSE 500 DOLLARS OR SIX MONTHS IMPRISONMENT. (Walter Mitty beware) I assume the number on the top registers it to the recipient? Anyone know how we can find out who this particular badge was awarded to?

Technology Help Group Success! Due to popular demand, Age UK Leicestershire and Rutland have opened another of their FREE Technology Help Drop-In Groups in Syston for anyone over 50. These take place on 2nd & 4th Wednesday of each month at the Jubilee Room in Syston Town Council Community Centre in School Street between 10am and 12noon.
Hathern Band If you said the word Hathern to some in other parts of the country, they would reply “Hathern Band”. It is a source of pride that such a small village has a first-rate brass band – actually four bands. The main Band is a competition band which from 2018 will be competing in the top Championship section. Concert Brass is a non-contesting band comprising players who have graduated from the Youth Band, retired from the main Band, and those who simply want to make good music in a friendly atmosphere. Both the main Band and Concert Brass undertake many engagements throughout the year. Last but not least are the Youth Band and the Training Band. Under the guidance of Musical Director, David Newman, instruments, music and tuition are provided for only a £4 monthly subscription. Children are taught not only to play a brass or percussion instrument but also music theory in a relaxed and fun environment. The number of children learning a musical instrument has sadly declined in Britain which means that bands such as Hathern have an increasing role to play in teaching music. The Band visited primary schools in the last two years and several youngsters have joined the Training Band as a result. Playing in the main Band may seem a long way off to the youngsters, but there are currently 10 musicians under 22 years old who have made the journey through. Hathern Band has a long history having been formed in 1856 and is the oldest brass band in the Midlands. In 1890 there was a falling out and a second band was formed. Hathern, with a population of only around 1200 at the time, must have been quite unusual in supporting two brass bands. The present band derives from the amalgamation of these in 1917. Would you believe that the Band features in the Thesaurus of Traditional English Metaphors? “Don’t give me Hathern Band” was a saying from early last century. It meant don’t repeat yourself – which doesn’t say much for the Band repertoire at that time! Unlike some bands, Hathern isn’t supported by a sponsor. The Patrons Scheme provides a welcome income source and many individuals and businesses contribute a minimum of £25 per annum. Patrons have their own annual concert. In addition, there is the Friends of Hathern Band for supporters to keep in touch with the band organisation. There is no cost in being a Friend who receive a quarterly newsletter with news, information, profiles of players etc. For many people there is something special about Christmas carols being played by a brass band, and the bands are in great demand at this time of year. It’s a big part of Christmas in Hathern to see band members playing carols round the streets. Long may it continue! Hathern Band’s secretary is Lesley Bentley, Tel: 01509 672029 Mob: 07786604552 Email: Lesley.Bentley@dsl.pipex.com Website: www.hathernband.co.uk.
Jeanette Silver, the Development Worker for Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland said, so far, the groups have helped people with their Smart Phones, Tablets, iPads and Laptops with questions ranging from “How do I switch it on” to answering quite detailed questions about Windows 10 issues and everything in between! Whether you bring your own equipment or use ours, you will be working 1:1 with a Volunteer who has some experience in Technology. We offer a minimum of 30 minutes and if it is a quiet day and nobody is waiting, then you may even get longer. One lady who has been coming to our Loughborough group has gained so much confidence she now Skype’s regularly with her family who have moved abroad and found out online about assisted travel – as she has degenerating eyesight – and she has now visited the family twice! Other participants have learned how to shop online, make appointments at the Doctors surgery, manage their Prescriptions online, watch online TV programmes and one even joined a local social group after finding out about it online. Other benefits are increased confidence, social connections and reduced isolation. We even helped one lady to choose the right technology for her needs as she was a Carer for her husband and so overwhelmed by the choice, she didn’t have the confidence, or the opportunity(!) to go into a big store. So, if you would like help and guidance, don’t feel overawed by it all, walking over our threshold is the hardest step and a warm drink and a friendly welcome await you! If you need further details of our other groups in Charnwood, or you would like to arrange a session for your own group, just call Jeanette on 01509 260327 Mon/Wed/Thur. For details of Groups in greater Leicestershire & Rutland, call Sumayya Kara on 0116 223 7371.

CAFÉ 1804 - New Café Bar Opens At Market Bosworth Marina The team at Market Bosworth Marina are proud to announce the opening of Café 1804, a fully licensed café open from 9am to 6pm, Wednesday to Sunday. Manager Heidi welcomes the general public and the marina’s boaters in to the first floor Café, located in a stunning new building with panoramic views over the marina basin and of the Ashby Canal. In the heart of the Midlands countryside the Marina is just outside the picturesque and historic town of Market Bosworth, on the Warwickshire and Leicestershire borders.
Café 1804 aims to provide classic home cooked food finished with a twist. Head chef Will serves a carefully curated menu a simple sandwich to hearty breakfasts, home-made classics, and sharing platters. Sharon, the in-house pastry chef creates, among other sweets, the café’s speciality afternoon teas, including a three tiered triumph of cakes, scones and sandwiches, bookable in advance and perfect for a celebration. The space combines a modern /rustic fit out with handcrafted features. These include a hand painted mural of the canal highlighting local historic sites of interest by talented artist Claire Greenwood. The café takes its name from the Ashby Canal, opened in 1804. The 30 mile long canal was originally used to haul coal and limestone from Moira and
continued to be used in this way until 1981. The 17 acres of landscaping around the soft edged marina basin include a lake of 4700 m² and a SITE OF SPECIAL SCIENTIFIC INTEREST habitat of 3500 m² adjacent to the canal which replicates the waterway’s habitat and attracts much wildlife. Bosworth Marina is committed to protecting this SSSI which is located on the waterway going towards Carlton. Bosworth Marina was awarded a grant from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development to assist in this project. www.cafe1804.co.uk Café 1804, Carlton Road, Market Bosworth, Nuneaton, CV13 6PG Bookings and Enquiries; 01455 292900 or Heidi@cafe1804.co.uk Open Wednesday – Sunday, 9 am – 6 pm

Counting Down To The Fair’s 800th Anniversary A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege to speak from the steps of a Wurlitzer, and along with the Mayor of Charnwood, and the President of the Showman’s Guild, declare the official opening of Loughborough’s 796th annual fair. Once the formal speeches had been made, the King’s proclamation from 1221 read out, and Trumpeters from Loughborough Grammar had played Good Save the Queen, we all jumped on the ride for a quick spin. It was a suitably tongue-incheek ceremony for what is an extraordinary event – and we’re now discussing in earnest how we will celebrate the fair’s 800th Anniversary. The Showman’s Guild want to help make the anniversary something special, and we’ll work with them to make sure that the lead up to the 2021 fair sets the scene for what will hopefully be the best yet. We Will Remember Them Each year I make sure that our house is full of friends with families that we then take to the fair, and each year, as we walk around the town centre on a Saturday night, I explain that everything they see around them will vanish overnight, leaving not a trace of the rides nor a spec of litter. It’s hard to convince them that it happens, because, in truth, it is an extraordinary feat of planning that results in the fair leaving town so quickly, and for the Council’s staff to clear and clean the town in the early hours of Sunday morning so efficiently. This year, we were lucky to have a dry, if chilly, weekend, which meant that come Remembrance Sunday morning, everything, including the weather, was just right for the service in Queens Park, and the parade into the town centre. Each year, the day
attracts ever bigger crowds, and I’m sure that this years were the largest yet. They came to pay their respects for those that have served, and continue to serve our country, and acknowledge the debt that we all owe to those that lost their lives in conflict. Next year’s 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War will be important for the country, and we will aim to make sure that Loughborough’s service is supported appropriately. Over the next few months the Carillon will undergo a £300k renovation, and will be ready for November 2018, to take centre stage as it has done, every year since 1923. Serving Loughborough And Charnwood On 6th November I was elected leader of Charnwood by its Borough Councillors at a full Council meeting. I am honoured to be asked to do so, and will do everything I can to lead the Council in the interests of all residents and businesses within the Authority. Cllr Slater, who I have succeeded as leader, served for 7 years in the role – the longest of any leader since the Council was first established in the early ‘70s. He led the Council during a period of significant challenge, with reduced income from central government, and a faltering economy as a legacy of the 2008 financial collapse, the Council continued to protect frontline services, keep the Council Tax far lower than neighbouring areas, and oversee improvements to the way the Authority is managed, putting it in a far healthier financial position that at any time in its history. I thank him for his service to Charnwood, and look forward to the challenges ahead.

Two Sides To The Story In his recent article Cllr Jonathan Morgan suggested that the benefits of a Loughborough Town Council were ‘too good to be true’. I would say it is an opportunity too good to miss. Loughborough is the only place in Charnwood not to have a town or parish council, yet we, Loughborough residents, already pay for one through the Loughborough Special Rate (LSR) on our Council Tax that goes straight into Borough coffers. As the Americans said, there should be ‘no taxation without representation’! We both agree that Town or Parish Councils are common throughout Leicestershire. They are very local level of democracy below the County and then Borough tiers of local government. Their councillors are voluntary unpaid, elected representatives who live in, or very near, the parish or town concerned. Jonathan’s first concern is that costs would rise out of control. But these are costs which we are already charged to Loughborough residents by Charnwood and it is an accusation made regularly about the Borough Council. It is hardly ever directed at Town Councils which are much cheaper to run. Indeed, Charnwood Borough’s precept rose by nearly 5% this year, well above inflation. The general rule is that the smaller the organisation, the closer is the scrutiny of every penny spent and every need to be met. Whether or not you believe in Brexit, “taking back control” embraces that very idea and it applies most vividly to Town Councils. Not only are they run by elected unpaid volunteers with limited office staff, but their responsibilities are very specific. In the town’s case there is a clear division of responsibilities within the Loughborough Special Rate which residents already pay. They are the neighbourhood parks, playgrounds, sports and community centres. These are civic amenities local people can actually see and value immensely. They exclude the revenue from car parks and the Town Hall which are regarded as Borough-wide assets. The Borough Council collect waste and recycling, sweep the streets, manage social housing and are the local planning authority. The Loughborough Special Rate is not set by Loughborough representatives but by the whole of the Council which has an inbuilt majority of councillors from outside the town who don’t pay it. The LSR currently amounts to about £75pa for Band D properties. It includes various overheads which a Town Council would not have to pay such as the
costs of buildings a Town Council would not use and a contribution to senior staff who the Borough employs. My point is that a Town Council would therefore cut costs and increase oversight by residents of the things they care most about. The second point that Jonathan makes is that the Borough serves residents better than its own Town Council might. I would have had sympathy with this a few years ago but times have changed. With the exception of Queens Park, which is wonderful, many public areas have declined under Charnwood’s management. What were flowerbeds in the past are now, often overgrown, perennials. Some playgrounds and bus shelters have been removed and the Borough has a policy of encouraging any new parks and open spaces to be managed privately, rather than being adopted by themselves as council assets – unless by is a Town or Parish Council. And there’s the rub! A Town Council would be able to keep these facilities under their wing. Worse still, without a Town Council, those moving into new homes in Loughborough may well find they are paying for their local parks to a private company. This will surprise many people, but it has already been decided that Garendon Park and the public amenities surrounding the new development will be managed privately and their maintenance paid for by incoming households. We do not yet know the cost but the charge could well start ar around £200pa, rather than the £75pa the rest of us pay in LSR. This would certainly rise and is far more than they would pay to a Town Council. Whilst Jonathan and I may disagree about some things, I am pleased we agree on combining the functions of Borough and County into one Council. After all Rutland went alone. The question is whether public affection for Charnwood is so great that people would reject the extra cost savings of a single Leicestershire Council rather than a single Charnwood Council – a discussion for another day! A Town Council can bring the whole community together combining the influential voices in our great town including voluntary organisations, students and residents’ groups. A Town Council may not have all the powers of the Borough or County Councils but its influence on all town planning and other civic matters could be more significant than either.

Are you regularly saying “Oh, my shoulders ate so stiff” or “they feel like they always have knots in them”? Like many of us do you drive, type, use your phone hunched over? Yes? Then at Comprehensive Sports Massage (Loughborough) we see many people like you! The aim of this series of articles is to explain, test and ease some of the common muscular complaints we frequently encounter. In this, our first, article we look at tight/overactive pectoral muscles – perhaps the most prolific condition we see. Symptoms: Forward posture of the shoulders and/or head; tenderness in the upper back, chest or neck; commonly associated with shoulder issues. Note the shoulders, ear position relative to them and head angle in the photos right: Cause: Tight or overactive chest muscles (pectoralis major and minor) usually resulting in a tight trapezius (top of the shoulder) combining to bring the shoulders forward, and often up. Effect: The rhomboid muscles (connecting the shoulder blade to the spine) become overstretched, lose function, often leading to discomfort between the shoulder blades. The chest muscles are often tender to moderate pressure as they are shortened and overused. Test: • Stand with the back of your head and buttocks touching the wall. • Look straight ahead with your arms hanging freely at your sides. Do your shoulders, your spine between them, or both touch the wall? With ideal posture just the shoulders will touch the wall. If both or just your spine touch the wall you may have tight or overactive pectoral muscles. Treatment: We are big advocates of stretching to aid healthy movement. This one can be done at home, ideally a few times a day to ease chest tightness. It takes about 3 minutes when you are familiar with the process.
• Find a doorway with some space either side of the door jam. • Stand in the middle of the doorway with one foot in front, the other behind you and knees bent for stability.
• Place your elbows at shoulder height on the door jam (F1). • Ease (don't force) your chest through the doorway until you feel a good stretch and hold it for about 30 seconds.
• With your arms by your sides, ease your shoulders back and down and hold for about 30 seconds.
• Raise your elbows 15-20 cm (6-8”) above level (F2) and repeat. • Drop your elbows 15-20 cm (6-8”) below level (F3) and repeat.
