ALBUM TO RAISE CASH FOR CHARITY WHICH HELPED FAMILY The mother of a three year old boy with a serious heart defect has recorded an album of songs she wrote for him.

Measham and surrounding villages and this takes our total distribution up to over 55,000 magazines all hand delivered by our own distribution team. That’s an average of one magazine pushed through someone’s door every 50 seconds!
The charity has helped her son Billy, who suffered a cardiac arrest when he was 13 months old. The incident happened at the family home in Loughborough, in 2012. Charlotte said “I watched him go blue in my arms while the paramedics worked on him and I didn’t know whether or not he had died. The paramedic didn’t know whether to shock him as he was so small, but he did and called for an ambulance to take him to hospital. I wasn’t sure whether I would see him alive again” Billy was diagnosed with cardiacfibroma - a benign tumour which measured about 6cm by 4cm - growing on his heart and needs regular check-ups and assessment to make sure his heart is beating strongly. Now, Charlotte , with the help of her dad Rob Francis, 51, have created a charity album and recorded it with the help of producer David Moore at Studio 3Zero, in Birstall.
LOUGHBOROUGH LIONS CLUB
Charlotte said “It’s made up of lullabies I sing to him at night and songs I sing with my guitar when he’s in the bath. There’s another song about going to the zoo, which I sang to him on the way to Twycross. They’re all very personal and mean something to us. “I hope we can raise some money for a very good cause” Gill Smart, Heart Link treasurer said “You would think newborn babies come with everything perfect but some times they don’t and parents don’t know what to do. So we look after the whole family, not just the children because everyone needs support. We rely on the public helping us out as it’s the only way we exist. We don’t get any funding at all.” Charlotte said “Heart Link gave us somewhere to sleep right next to the ward where Billy was and offered a lot of facilities to help Billy with his recovery and to make us feel at home. Teamed with the charity Keep the Beat and all the hard-working staff, they make the children’s heart ward, Ward 30, as comfortable and homely as they can.” Charlie and Robbie’s Heart Link CD, which has 5 songs on and costs £5 is available from Charlie by emailing charliefrancis@hotmail.co.uk

OBJECT OF DESIRE
As explained above we are working on the Yeomanry Room at the moment and this leather object has sat on top of a cabinet for years with no explanation as to what it was. It is in fact a sabretache (German; ‘tache’ meaning ‘pocket’) In the long period of peace after Waterloo uniforms became more and more suited for the parade ground and less suited for the field, high collars, braid and bright colours, so tight, they had no pockets. Part of the wartime function of the light cavalry was to deliver orders and dispatches; the sabertache was well suited to hold these. The large front flap was usually heavily embroidered with a royal cypher or regimental crest, and could be used as a firm surface for writing. Ours is the ‘undress’ version less decorative than the ceremonial one, difficult to date but post 1844, ( the year they adopted the title Prince Albert’s Own) it has a crown above the letters LYC (Leicestershire Yeomanry Cavalry) and ‘Prince Albert’s Own’ in the scroll along the bottom.
YEOMANRY ROOM
The big project for the close season is the Yeomanry Room and work is progressing well, a small but dedicated group meet each Wednesday at 1 pm till 3 pm if you want to help.
This is a photo sharing website that I have been told would be a useful tool for the museum, posting photographs of objects that provide a link to the website. Any experts out there who could advise us of how useful a tool it might be? Please email me.
The Yeomanry Room, started by ex-members of the Leicestershire Yeomanry, developed independently of the rest of the museum but in late 2011 after some deliberation and with the agreement of all the interested parties it was incorporated within the rest of the collection. Whilst moving the displays some very interesting items have come to light and I will feature some of them in the next couple of months. The first is the ‘Sabrtache’ in the piece below. The picture at the top of the page however is something that we are looking for. A copy of a cartoon by ‘Snaffles’ of Lt P C Evans-Freake
CHRISTMAS CARDS 7th (Leicestershire) Coy. Imperial Yeomanry during the Boer War (1899-1902). Rutland Museum used it many years ago to produce a poster but unfortunately the only copy they have left hangs in their office and they will not part with it. Do you have a copy we could copy or know of one? Email me: carillonmuseum@gmail.com
There is still time and probably plenty of opportunity to provide a photograph or picture for our Christmas Card 2015. Pictures of the carillon in the snow have proved very popular in the past but we would consider any local or interesting picture, I would particularly like a picture of the ‘Sock Man’ in the snow and wearing a ‘Santa hat’. Get out there with your camera or paintbrush next time we have snow or white over with frost, something local and wintery. You will be credited on the back of the card.

LEICESTER UNIVERSITY EXHIBITION
THE ZEPPELIN RAID We are discussing with the council a proper memorial to the victims of the Zeppelin Raid on Loughborough 31 Jan 1916, (not 1915 as stated in the link below) some progress has been made but it is painfully slow. In the meantime The Charnwood Great War Centenary Project are planning a performance to commemorate the event and they are holding two public meetings to discuss the plans. After you have visited the link why not have a look at the rest of the site?
Visit http://goo.gl/rNL1CH The picture shows the L20, the Zeppelin that bombed Loughborough, getting it’s just reward, destroyed off the coast of Norway, just four months after the raid on the town.
There is a new exhibition that draws on material from the University’s Special Collections to commemorate the enduring legacy of the war to Leicester and to showcase contemporary artistic and photographic imagery of the world at war. It is a site well worth the visit. Further details are at: www2.le.ac.uk/library/find/ specialcollections/exhibitions

Famous author Graham Green once wrote, ‘There is always one moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in.” Inspired by that “open door” writers and actors based in Charnwood are joining forces to present an evening’s entertainment called “Childhood Memories”, raising money for the charity Barnardo’s. The lively and diverse writing class meets at Rawlins Academy on Tuesday evenings during term time. Earlier this year the writers and actors helped the Soroptimists to raise money for the Admiral Nurses through a similar successful event. The writers also published an anthology of their work in 2013, called Clothes Lines.
Currently Barnardo’s is campaigning to help address a nationwide shortfall of foster carers. Teenagers and older children are amongst those who wait the longest to find a new home. The charity aims to give these children the best start in life and the chance to fulfil their potential with the right foster care.
As part of the project Café 88 at the hotel will present a display of photographs, drawings and paintings of Childhood Memories, from 10 to 20 March. Anyone visiting the exhibition can enter a caption competition for £1, with all funds donated to Barnardo’s. The winner will receive a voucher for a free meal at Quorn Grange Hotel.
Quorn Grange Hotel is hosting the event to show their support. The hotel’s marketing manager Ian Richards says, “We are proud to have been part of the local community for a long time and

As Mayor of Charnwood I was asked to nominated three worthy volunteers and each were invited, together with a guest, to the dinner.
Ulverscroft Camera Club (UCC) meets fortnightly on Tuesday evenings in Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall between September and the following May. We are enthusiastic amateur and semiprofessional photographers.
We learn from each other and visiting speakers who are experts in their fields. We also learn through themed evenings, practical workshops, away days and local visits.
HOT CROSS BUNS Fold the milk mixture into the flour mixture to form a dough. Tip the dough onto a floured work surface and knead for 10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. Divide the dough into 12 pieces, shape into balls and cover with a damp cloth. Set aside for 12 hours, or until the dough has doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Meanwhile, for the cross, mix the flour, sugar and water together in a bowl and spoon into a piping bag with a plain nozzle. Place the buns onto a baking tray and pipe a cross onto each bun. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through. Meanwhile, for the glaze, heat the glaze ingredients in a pan until the sugar has melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove the buns from the oven and immediately brush each bun with the glaze. Set aside to cool. Serve the hot cross buns warm with butter.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Loughborough & the surrounding area and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

pring is just around the corner & already I’ve spotted new shoots appearing in the garden and the bulbs are poking their noses through the earth. It’s so satisfying to see plants I’ve raised emerging from their winter slumber and it’s even better when I know that I’ll get to eat them soon too!

I’ve a little herb bed near the kitchen door which slopes slightly and faces south so that it basks in the summer sun. I love cooking and so my herb patch is important to me, I can pop out and pick something to flavour a casserole, curry or sauce throughout the whole year. The softer & more tender herbs like Basil and coriander will give me fresh tasty leaves in the summer months. Many of the culinary herbs we use come from warmer climes so they need some loving care if they are going to survive and thrive in our cooler and wetter environment. Most like a sunny spot with free draining soil. I added some horticultural grit to my clay-loam soil when I first prepared the patch to help rain water drain through and avoid root rot. Growing in terracotta pots can also be very successful as they naturally drain well and can be filled with suitable free draining compost too.
SHRUBBY HERBS e.g. Bay, Rosemary, Sage & Thyme. These I grow in containers so I can control their growth and give them really free draining soil. I tend to grow a Rosemary & Sage plant for about 3-4 years until it gets really woody then I start again with a fresh plant. These bushy herbs are perfect for slow cooked dishes like stews and roasted vegetables. HARDY PERENNIAL HERBS Chives, Mint, Tarragon & Oregano for example will happily reappear each spring and provide handfuls of tasty soft leaves through until autumn. These are the herbs I use to flavour a dish towards the end of cooking to give a fresh zingy lift to the dish. They grow happily in my heavy soil, with a trim back & a handful of fertiliser in spring. Every few years a lift and split them during spring, dividing them with a spade & replanting the fresh vigorous pieces. HARDY ANNUAL HERBS Coriander, Rocket & Parsley are sown from seed in pots during the spring (or bought ready grown) & can then be planted in the herb bed alongside the perennials as long as they have a drink occasionally in the hottest summer months. Although Parsley is actually a perennial I tend to start with new plants each year as they
are prone to going to seed in their second year. With their tender leaves these annual herbs are best raw or added just before serving to preserve their flavour. TENDER HERBS Basil is wonderful with its hit of aniseed and is delicious with pasta or salad. I grow this from seed alongside my tomatoes in the green house so that it benefits from the heat of the greenhouse. Lemon verbena is a slightly tender shrubby herb which smells amazing. The intense lemony fragrance is wonderful in a summer punch with strawberries. I grow it in a terracotta pot on the patio and then move the pot in to the greenhouse for the winter. With all that said, I’m off to split my chives, trim back the mint and sow some parsley and basil. Next month I’ll be looking at Alpine plants which are great for containers & gravel gardens. They’ll soon be gracing the garden centres and nurseries with a much needed splash of colour after the winter. Whether you need help creating a herb garden, your garden needs a revamp, or you’re faced with a blank canvas, I offer a tailor made service from consultations to full garden rejuvenation projects.

CHARNWOOD’S CORE STRATEGY he much anticipated final announcement on the Core Strategy for Charnwood is only days away, with the Planning Inspector’s recommendations to be published to enable the modification of the Borough’s planning documents to reflect his criteria for ‘soundness’. In essence this means that he will propose some changes (from the evidence of the Public Examination over the past couple of months, these are likely to be relatively minor) to the documents assembled by Charnwood Borough Council’s planning department over the past few years, to enable the updated document to be consulted on for the final time, ahead of a vote by the full Council. The 15 year plan for the Borough will then be in place. The draft Core Strategy was sent to the Planning Inspector over a year ago, and following a pause requested by him to enable the County’s local councils to agree each others’ housing numbers, the Public Examination continued over Christmas, with the final meeting being held last month. His initial verdict was the document was workable, with modifications (every successful Core Strategy in the UK has gone through exactly the same modification process – so his response was met with relief by the Council’s planning officers), and these are currently being agreed between the Planning Inspector and the Council’s planning officers prior to publication of the final document. The Planning Inspector’s job is to make sure that the Strategy is based on sound evidence, hard facts and justifiable predictions – which will support the Council’s aim to produce a document, led by the evidence, rather than by political interference. If the modifications are as expected, then it may be the case that Charnwood’s Core
Strategy will be the most complete document yet agreed by the Planning Inspectorate in the UK – a reflection on the hard work carried out, the consultations held, and in stark contrast to some people’s very public comments that it was ‘doomed to failure’. VOTER REGISTRATION Charnwood Council is hard at work making sure that the electoral registration is correct and up to date. Hopefully most households will have received letters acknowledging who is on the register at their address – if you haven’t, and believe you are eligible to vote, make sure you contact the Council, either via it’s website (www.charnwood.gov.uk) or phone (01509 634613). The Coalition Government has introduced a new voter registration system to limit election fraud, and as such every individual is now responsible for their own registration, rather than the head of the household, or as with those at the University, the University itself. The message is clear: if you value democracy, register to vote, rather than assuming that someone else will do it for you. Some people with dual households (such as University students) are still allowed to register in two separate locations – many, if not most, will already be registered at their parents’ homes – but will have to take their own decision whether they also wish to register in Charnwood – however, anyone who registers in more than one location will be breaking the law if they attempt to vote at more than one location for the parliamentary elections, although they may vote for more than one council election. If you are in any doubt about how the registration process or how the election laws affect you - please contact Charnwood’s election team rather than any political parties or their candidates.

I
recently asked one of Loughborough’s high street banks about the rate in which new businesses are being set up. They said they are getting 20 enquiries a week. And I’ve now been asked to support two more Loughborough-based businesses which I am delighted to do. Cheryl Lee is setting up www.mind-body-movement.co.uk and Kimmy Rolfe is setting up a new image consultancy – you can find out more about Kimmy via Twitter @kimmyrolfe. Both are also supporting a new Facebook group for Self Employed Mums which can be found at www.facebook.com/ groups/1393316674305585/ It seems that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Loughborough which is good news for families, those looking for jobs and our local economy. We are also very lucky in Loughborough to have, in our midst, our local Business in the Community business connector, Malcolm Heaven. Malcolm does a huge amount locally by working with local businesses and groups such as the Loughborough College Bridge to Work steering group, the council and local charities to get them support as well as focusing on youth employment opportunities. I was delighted to be able to invite Malcolm and the former Loughborough BID Chairman, Roger Perrett, to 10 Downing Street recently. The Prime Minister had asked MPs to nominate local community champions to attend a reception and I was very pleased to be able to introduce Malcolm and Roger to David Cameron. They had a chance to tell him about their work in Loughborough. Last week I joined staff and pupils at Outwoods Edge Primary School for the launch of the Woodland Trust’s “Schools into Woods” project. The idea
is to support schools who have a woodland near them which they are not currently using for learning. The Woodland Trust can help with access but also with thinking about the skills and experiences the pupils can gain from the woods. In the case of Outwoods Edge we had two very enthusiastic groups of pupils who built fantastic towers made of sticks and leaves. I think they were all ready for their breakfasts by the time they had finished! I was pleased to host recently our Leicester & Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership at an event held in the House of Commons to celebrate the grants they have allocated under the Regional Growth Fund. The LLEP have spent £20m across 196 businesses, creating or safeguarding nearly 2,900 jobs and levering in £106million of private funding. Having met the Fire Minister with other Leicestershire MPs in December to discuss proposals to remove a fire engine from Loughborough station and then having met the FBU and signed a letter with other Leicester and Leicestershire MPs to ask for more information about the Fire Service’s proposals I was pleased to hear that the Combined Fire Authority have not approved the planned changes. More time is needed to look at the figures and ensure we have confidence in what is being proposed. I recently joined in with everyone at the Dementia Singing Café held at Loughborough library on Fridays between 10am and 11am. I was there to attend the launch of the Reading Well Books on Prescription Scheme and the books on display at the time were all about dementia. Those present told me some of the books had really helped them and their families – and I think the Signing Café does too!

he new electoral register for the Loughborough shows that there are over 10,000 fewer people registered to vote than on the old register. It’s not likely that 10,000 people have suddenly decided to leave Loughborough is it? We would soon notice the number of empty houses, much less congested roads, people in the shops etc. The reason is that the Government changed the system of voter registration and now each of us is responsible for registering ourselves to vote, rather than one person registering the whole household. In a number of households young people coming up to the age of majority (18) are not registered to vote, under the old system they would have automatically registered. If you have someone of this age, check with the council that they are registered. The largest number ‘missing’ off the register is students. The University can no longer automatically register them to vote, they have to do it themselves. As part of a national week of voter registration I visited the College and the University to talk to young people about the need to register and vote. Liam Byrne, Shadow Universities Minister, came with me to talk to the young people and not only persuade them to register but also to find out what issues affect them most. Students make up a large section of the population of Loughborough, albeit mainly in term time. The University is an important asset to the town and the local economy, not just in the number of people it employs and the spending power of its students but also in the businesses it attracts in its Science and Enterprise Park, a number of them world class in their field. Sadly there are a small number of students whose occasional unruly behaviour make life difficult for the permanent residents of the Town.
I was very pleased to receive a series of proposals from the various residents groups around the campus to limit the adverse impact of students on the permanent residents. These include the Forest Road North and Holywell Area, (FRHARG), Kingfisher Area (KARG), Nanpantan Ward and Storer and Ashby Area (SARG). I am working with councillors I know to see how best together we can support the residents in these areas. I would welcome your comments as well. Two of the most solemn occasions I attend are Remembrance Day and Holocaust Memorial Day. This latter occurred on the 27th of January. I placed my small stone, along with the others, on the memorial to those who lost their lives in the Holocaust and to those who have perished in other acts of genocide. Traffic and public transport are always very important issues in Loughborough. The recent Pedestrianisation in the town centre has meant that several bus stops have been relocated, often meaning extra walking for those who have difficulty getting about. The completion of the inner ring road has upset many as otherwise clear junctions have been restricted causing congestion at these pinch points. If there is a particular junction that you think needs looking at, please let me know. Many residents still want a bus station so they can connect easily with other services in the area. Given that the options for one in the town centre are almost non-existent, then the possibility of one at the station connecting bus and rail should be investigated. Finally some good news – well it’s the reversal of bad news perhaps. The Fire Authority has decided not to reduce the Fire Service in Loughborough down to one engine but to keep the two engines. Thanks to all who helped lobby on this.

Raynauds
Raynaud’s disease is a condition found in the hands and feet thought to be triggered by exposure to cold or emotional stress. The small blood vessels in the fingers and toes constrict and go into spasm restricting the flow of blood. It is most common in hands but is also seen in the feet and is characterised by fingers and toes becoming white and cold as the small blood vessels narrow. They can then become blue or purple followed by bright redness as the vessels open again. The return of the blood flow causes throbbing, tingling and pain with symptoms lasting from a few minutes to several hours. There is no known cause in most cases (Primary Raynauds) just an increased sensitivity to cool temperatures. Women tend to be affected more often than men and it usually develops before the age of 30.
Less commonly it can be a symptom of other underlying conditions such as scleroderma, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis (Secondary Raynauds). Chemicals in tobacco can cause the small blood vessels to narrow and giving up smoking can be helpful. Some medications can cause symptoms or make them worse and a medication review with the GP is advisable if this is suspected. Caffeine has been known to increase symptoms in some people. The aim of treatment is to keep the core of the body and the hands and feet warm. Medication, such as nifedipine can be used to open up the blood vessels in some cases and exercise can help improve circulation. “The Raynaud’s and Scleroderma Association” has a list of suppliers of heat devices to help with keeping hands and feet warm as well as other useful information and support.

At Hallcroft Opticians we only have the best, qualified dispensing opticians to help you choose the ideal pair of specs. They are experts in giving advice in eyewear. From style and comfort advice with your frame choice to lens treatments and your budget, our dispensing opticians will not disappoint in offering you the very best in service and care at Hallcroft Opticians.
EXPECTATIONS
Everyone has different needs and expectations from their spectacles. Some people look
for comfort and choose glasses with inbuilt nose pads rather than frames where the nose pads are externally attached to the eye-wear frame. In the past metal frames would be heavier than plastic frames, so people often chose plastic frames made from cellulose acetate for the comfort factor. Times have moved on now and many metal frames are manufactured using titanium. This incredible piece of metal is extremely lightweight, very robust and is water resistant.
GLASSES FOR EVERYONE
Hallcroft Opticians caters for as many people as possible with the availability of men’s glasses, women’s glasses and children’s glasses. Both metal and plastic spectacle frames are available in a variety of different colours and frame sizes. We cater for the larger head and small head sizes. Why not book an eye test with Hallcroft Opticians and let our expert team of dispensing opticians help you find the ideal pair of glasses? See more at: www.hallcroftopticians.co.uk

QUICK CRAFT Make A Lamb
YOU WILL NEED: • Cardboard or Thick Paper • Glue • Popcorn • Ribbon HOW TO DO IT: 1. Draw and cut out a lamb head, body and legs out of the cardboard or thick paper. Draw a face on the head piece and then glue the head and legs to the body. 2. Spread a thin layer of glue onto the lamb body. 3. Sprinkle the popcorn onto the lamb body. (Different types of popcorn will give different coloured lambs!) Allow to dry overnight. 4. Use the ribbon to create a hanger and bow tie to decorate the lamb.
March March comes roaring in just like a lion. Winter’s final fling, there’s no denying. Ice and snow an ever present threat. Be sure he hasn’t finished with us yet. The arctic blast will chill us to the bone. Chapped hands and chilblains give us cause to moan. “How can I dig this frozen ground?” the gardener cries. A flurry of snowflakes falls from leaden skies. But wait! Is that a crocus I see before me? Yes. In stunning drifts of yellow, mauve and white. Green shoots of daffodil, they soon in flower will be. And winter migrants will be taking flight. So take heart, winter slumber’s nearly over. Spring, she is now waiting at the gate. With paintbrush dipped in green she’ll work her magic And ducks on frozen ponds will no more have to skate. Take heart as woodland turns a tender shade of green. Late snowfall melts away as though it’s never been. The month of March may come in like a lion. But goes out like a meek and gentle lamb.
