As the sun starts flooding back into our lives it can mean only one thing - Picnic In The Park is just around the corner! Loughborough's favourite family event is back at Queen's Park on Saturday June 13th with a day of free fun - the 39th annual Picnic In The Park. As always, Picnic is being built round a theme and this year that theme is "Patchwork", bringing together the whole community with a collection of entertainment, art activities and stalls. The fun begins at 12 noon with the grand opening by the Mayor of Charnwood, followed by an exciting 'Patchwork' of entertainment that will have you in stitches. From arts and crafts stalls to a tapestry of performers – there’s plenty to see and do! Performers already confirmed include contrasting music from the legendary Ska Amanga and opera singer Maria Veretenina, making a welcome return visit after her success at Picnic In The Park 2014. Alongside them will be the distinctive sound of The Boys Brigade Marching Band. Contrast is also the order of the day with dance. We are delighted to welcome two very
different Morris Dancing sides - Bare Bones and The Way of the Wyrd plus the Street and contemporary dance skills of the AMC dance group. There will be circus skills and bubbleology with Sally Renshaw from Bill Brookman Productions, plus the amazing 'Todd Various' in the guise of 'Duke Loopin', lasso, whip cracking, gun slinging, western skills master. And later in the day he will also be popping up as a very individual street magician in a show packed full of comedy, magic - and escapology! But despite all the goodies already on offer, there's still room for more! Community groups are welcome to have a stall or bring along performers and, as always, we are looking for stallholders, volunteers, street performers, dancers, singers and musicians. Why not get in touch and become part of the Patchwork Picnic 2015! So pack your picnic, fill up a flask and enjoy Saturday 13th June at the Patchwork Picnic in the Park. We look forward to seeing you from 12 noon. All enquiries can be directed to Rebecca Abrahams at Charnwood Arts on 01509 821035 or email rebecca. abrahams@charnwoodarts.com
DERBYSHIRE, LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND AIR AMBULANCE You may have seen our distinctive helicopters in the skies above, flying critically wounded patients to hospital in record time in order to save their lives. As the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance, indeed, all of the Charity`s aircraft and Staff have no Government funding, we on the ground have to raise sufficient funds to keep our highly-trained medics and fast helicopters in the air. The Charnwood Supporters Group is in urgent need of new Volunteers to help out in raising money locally – we do bucket collections at events, attend shows in the area (and have fun!). If you could spare a few hours of you time to swell our numbers, we would welcome you at our monthly meetings on the last Tuesday of the month at 7pm at the Thorpe Acre Scout Hut Loughborough LE11 4LF, or find out more by calling Head Office on: 0845130999 or by emailing Enquiries@theairambulance service.org.uk

ladies business networking group
GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH It’s networking but not as you may know it! The Ladies Business Group (Now LoveLBG Limited) brings together local businesses owned, managed or represented by women LoveLBG supports, promotes and inspires the businesses involved. There are currently groups in Ashby, Alcester, Loughborough and Burton upon Trent with new venues Leicester and Sutton Coldfield launching this June, due to increased demand. Networking LoveLBG style offers a sociable, sharing and inclusive alternative to the hard sell format of traditional groups, encouraging business women to get away from the work place for just a short time (no crack of dawn starts with breakfast meetings for busy working mums!) and meet likeminded ladies from the local area to share experiences and promote their businesses. Founder Sue Crooks explains what led her to set up the group in Ashby de la Zouch in April 2012 "People buy from people. Women are particularly good at making strong connections that often turn into friendships. For the ladies in our networking groups, it's not just about the event on the day - we believe in ongoing support and promotion, with reduced price professional training, relevant and topical workshops to boost members’ knowledge and tips and skills to build confidence and cement relationships.” According to Sue, part of the group’s success is its less formal structure which many people find far more comfortable than the goal setting, referrals and pressure of other networking groups. "Refreshingly, there are no long, dull speeches - instead, we meet, chat, exchange news, eat and share in a relaxed atmosphere with an interesting guest speaker at every lunch event bringing tips, advice and fresh perspectives to our members. The Ladies Business Group has grown incredibly quickly since its launch 3 years ago, which is why we need to rebrand and invest in the group’s future. New groups in Leicester and Sutton Coldfield are coming on board to join Loughborough, Ashby de la Zouch, Alcester near Stratford and Burton upon Trent so the time is right to do this.”
Passionate about the group, Sue drives it forward with energy, warmth and humour. She’s especially good at connecting people and businesses together and as Managing Director of SJC Marketing Limited in Ashby, she brings professional expertise in social media, marketing and communications to promote and support the group, whose members enjoy an active Facebook page, Twitter hashtag #lovelbg and their own presence on a dedicated website. Sue explains how it works “You can visit twice as a guest to see whether the group is for you - all it costs is the price of the lunch, although most people join as members beforehand to get a discount, it’s superb value! I don’t think any other networking group offers membership at less than £100.00 a year with the support we offer and members able to go to any area event they choose. Lunches take place in local, independent venues every month with regular coffee morning meet ups for members.” No sector is locked out. Every member has equal status, whether they are a home-based sole trader or a partner at a leading firm of solicitors – unlike some organisations, more than one member can represent the same business or product. Nothing like a little healthy competition! Guest speakers have included Nicky Morgan MP, who launched the Loughborough group in Spring 2014, Karen Williams, Networker of the Year (and also host of our Burton and Sutton Coldfield groups) and Maria Hanson MBE whose foundation helps people make the most of the time they have left together. Every event also supports a charity by either holding a raffle or having donations such as Easter Eggs for children in domestic violence support systems or unwanted bras for women and orphaned teenagers in Africa. Members can look forward to a summer of exciting events, a racing day and more inspirational talks and discounted workshops in Marketing, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook and Email Marketing – all designed to help members grow their own businesses. Come and find out what it’s all about! Contact Sue Crooks on 03330 116 449 or visit www.lovelbg.co.uk
PHOTO: Loughborough Vets XV – Leicestershire RFU County Champions 2015 A season of highs and lows for the Loughborough Rugby Football Club ended on a high for two ages groups at either end of the age spectrum, and for four lucky Ladies of the LRFC Women’s Squad a place in the England Women’s set up becoming one step closer. Following on from a 43 points to nil victory over Old Laurentians in their own ‘Beer Tap’ Veterans Tournament at Derby Road the Loughborough Vets squad travelled to Market Harborough to face their Hinckley counterparts in the Leicestershire RFU Veterans County Cup Final, aiming to end their opponents six year reign as County Champions. Ten points up after 25 minutes The Borough were on they’re way to victory and although Hinckley staged a late revival a further try gave the Loughborough ‘Old Boys’ the Leicestershire RFU County Cup, ensuring a night of celebration amongst their 100 or so supporters. As with their older ‘brothers’ the Loughborough RFC Under 12’s followed up their success in the Premiership Land Rover Cup with a trip to Market Harborough RFC and the Leicestershire RFU County Bowl. A four try to nil victory over Market Bosworth in the Semi Final brought the Borough youngsters face to face with local
rivals Syston in the Final and a showing of skill not bettered all season saw the youngsters run out winners by four tries to nil for their second trophy of the season. A third trophy targeted the following week, the Hinckley Festival ended in a one try each final against Lutterworth resulting a sharing of the trophy. A successful season for the Under 12’s is rewarded with a trip to Twickenham on May 30th representing Leicester Tigers in the half time parade of Land Rover Premiership Champions.

GRAND CENTRAL CHORUS HOST 2013 INTERNATIONAL CHORUS CHAMPIONS, TORONTO NORTHERN LIGHTS! Grand Central Chorus enjoyed the incredible experience of hosting the UK leg of Toronto Northern Lights (TNL) 2015 European Tour from 18-20 April which included a joint show, held at the Derby Theatre on the Sunday afternoon, superbly compered by Len Matthews, and which provided the capacity audience a rare opportunity to see and listen to one of the world’s top barbershop harmony choruses, who had not performed in the UK since 2008. TNL, founded and led by their MD, Steve Armstrong, won Barbershop Harmony Society International bronze medals five times and gained consecutive silver medals between 2001 and 2005 before finally winning gold in 2013 when the competition was held in their hometown of Toronto. Grand Central Chorus filled the first half of the show, and sang both their 2015 UK Barbershop Convention contest songs, one of which has been arranged especially for them by their MD Zac Booles and Tenor, Mark Burnip, as well as two of Zac’s previous arrangements for the chorus, Robbie William’s “Angels” and Billy Joel’s “She’s Always A Woman To Me” together with several other songs from their repertoire. Grand Central’s four quartets, (The Grand Dads, Finest Hour, Frank n’ Sense and Mirth and GSOH) also performed to an extremely high standard to the appreciative and knowledgeable audience. The second half featured Toronto Northern Lights, with a superb
package of both chorus and quartet songs, including the legendary “Brother Can you Spare a Dime” from their acclaimed 2004 International performance, and the two-hour show closed with both choruses together on the risers, singing “Irish Blessing” at the end of which the entire audience were on their feet, shouting for more! It was an afternoon of Barbershop which Grand Central Chorus, and many others who were also there, will remember for a long time. The Chairman of Grand Central Chorus, Alan Goldsmith summed up the weekend ‘the fact that we hosted an International Champion Chorus, had a great social evening and shared the stage with them is a great credit to everyone in Grand Central Chorus’ Follow Grand Central Chorus on our website www. grandcentralchorus.com on Twitter @GrandCentralMen and our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ GrandCentralChorus Nelson Blackley PRO - Grand Central Chorus
THREE INTO ONE WILL GO Do you remember Hydaway? Did you go to 009? Did you get married at one of the Baptist Churches in Loughborough? Whether you did or not or are too young to remember you are welcome to share with us on Sunday 14th June when Loughborough Baptist Church celebrates its 40th Anniversary. The church was born when the Baxter Gate, Wood Gate and King Street churches joined together in 1975, and the three groups came to worship and work together. The work has grown and there are meetings for men and women, activities for children and young people, opportunities for lunching together and much much more. There will be a celebration service at 10.45 a.m, followed by a buffet lunch and a children’s party.
During the afternoon there will be the opportunity to share news and reminiscences with friends, look at displays from the last 40 years and enjoy looking round the building. The day will end at 3.30 p.m. Call in or e-mail office@lbcweb. org.uk to find out more.

For Dr Singh to take on and complete this challenge he has to lose 2 stone in weight and to train hard over the coming months. He already has lost a stone and has another stone to lose. He is going to need a lot of encouragement and in this he is relying on the good people of Loughborough and surrounding areas who he has served over the years. To this effect he has a blog and people can read all about his efforts on www.gsingh1015.wordpress.com and follow a weekly commentary of his progress. On this blog he also has a link to his giving page but those who wish to go direct to it they can log on to: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ team/Hopesitalianjob
Hope Against Cancer (www.hfcr. org) is raising funds for cancer research in University Hospitals of Leicester. It was set up 10 years ago and has already raised £4 million which has helped fund many research trials locally and to have a cancer research nurse permanently based at Leicester Royal Infirmary. This centre is also supported by Cancer Research UK. As a result of its efforts Leicestershire cancer rates are already falling and we are attracting some of the best minds in cancer treatment and prevention to our hospitals. Last year Leicester was chosen, amongst 13 others, as a “Centre of Excellence” in cancer care in the UK.
Dr Singh is being sponsored by Pedal Power of Loughborough who have supplied his Trek Domane bike. Sponsorship forms for donations are available in Pedal Power on 47 Ashby Road, Rosebery Medical Practice, Rosebery Pharmacy, Forest Edge Medical Centre and Outwoods Medical centre.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Loughborough & the surrounding area and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

Creating Wildlife Gardens
A
garden isn’t a garden without wildlife. We rely on them for pollination, pest control, providing a food source for other creatures and as a bonus they add colour, movement and sound to our outdoor spaces too. So if we can incorporate wildlife friendly features and plants into our gardens we will all benefit hugely.
Echinops Thistle
Log Piles
I’m busy working on a design plan for a wildlife garden at the moment, including features and planting to encourage wildlife to frequent the garden. So what are the essentials for this type of garden?
diversity. Be sure to top up the water in the summer months. Bug boxes are made up of materials like bamboo canes, sticks and cones to provide nooks and crannies as snug, safe places for insects to hibernate. They are especially good our natural pest exterminators - lacewings and ladybirds. Solitary bees also hibernate in the hollow tubes of the bamboo. Bug boxes are available to buy easily or they can be made simply from scraps of wood and garden twigs.
Ponds are great habitats for Frogs, toads and newts. Damselflies, dragonflies, pond skaters, snails and water beetles all breed in water and for those with space for a large pond, they may even see swallows and house martins gathering insects from the water surface and using muddy areas for nest building.
Hedgehog habitats like piles of logs & leaves, a compost heap or space beneath a shed will provide shelter and space for nesting or hibernating hogs. Encouraging them into your garden will help with pest control as they love to munch on slugs, beetles and caterpillars. I love to hear them snuffling around on a summers evening.
Ponds can be large or small; it’s possible to convert decorative pots, old sinks, troughs and even old baths into a pond once the drainage holes have been sealed. Pots with a minimum water depth of 20-30cm (8-12in) will allow a few plants to be added.
Log Piles made up of a mixture of logs and twigs from various plants they provide homes for creepy crawlies and a food source for plenty of wildlife. Simulating a natural woodland floor, they’re best placed in a shady spot, so that it remains cool and damp.
For larger spaces natural style ponds can be created with shallow sides to allow frogs easy access & to allow birds to drink safely. Aim for some foliage around the edges for wildlife to shelter and to encourage greater
Plants which are nectar and seed rich will attract a wealth of bees, butterflies, insects and birds throughout the year. Daisies like Echinacea, Rudbeckia and Leucanthemum, act as landing pads for bees and butterflies,
drawing them in to gather nectar and pollinate the blooms. Thistlelike perennials like Eryngium, Echinops and Teasels offer a valuable food source for birds in the autumn-winter months. Native wildflowers will bring a whole host of wildlife into the garden. Choose those which are not invasive like Wild Primrose and Violets which flower in early spring when there is little else about. Berrying & fruiting shrubs and trees like Rowan, Pyracantha and Crab Apple offer an easy food source for birds and insects from late summer onwards. Leave fallen fruit for insects, decomposing bacteria and fungi to scavenge from in the autumn-winter. Bird Feeders are essential if you want to attract more birds to the garden. There’s a huge range of bird food to choose from to attract finches, Tits, Sparrows & Robins. Ensure they are kept clean to keep the birds healthy and regularly top them up to keep a steady stream of feathered friends calling. The tropical look more your thing? Next month I’ll be looking at how to add plants to give an exotic flavour to your outdoor space. If you fancy a wildlife garden or border revamp and need some further help, get in touch.

Mobile Support Service heads to Charnwood Local sight loss charity Vista has launched a brand new Mobile Support Service for older people at risk of developing sight loss in Leicestershire. The service, in partnership with Leicestershire County Council, will tour the county in a specially designed mobile unit, providing information, support and advice.
area for individual consultation and support. During their time on board, visitors can: • Learn how a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of sight loss, the importance of regular sight tests and spotting conditions early
• Discover equipment and technologies that can support people with sight loss.
1.8 million people are living with significant sight loss in the UK, and evidence suggests that over 50 per cent of sight loss is due to preventable or treatable causes. Vista will raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of sight loss, the importance of early diagnosis and the links between lifestyle and sight loss.
The programme will also support older people already experiencing sight loss, enabling them to access dedicated information, advice and support in their local communities.

SUNSET BOULEVARD AT LOUGHBOROUGH TOWN HALL IN SEPTEMBER No sooner has the applause died down from their sell-out success of Hairspray, than Loughborough theatre company the ESNA Players are announcing news of another local premiere for the town - Sunset Boulevard. Sunset Boulevard is a huge hit with fans of classic cinema thanks to Billy Wilder's memorable 1950s film starring Gloria Swanson and William Holden.
She hires a young screenwriter Joe Gillis to draw into her fantasy world and help set up her movie comeback. Gillis believes he can manipulate her, but he soon finds out he is wrong. The screenwriter's ambivalence about their relationship and her unwillingness to let go leads to a situation of violence, madness, and death.
And now, ESNA are bringing the stage version to Loughborough Town Hall for the first time.
With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the show first opened in London in 1993 and has had several long runs internationally and also enjoyed extensive tours.
Sunset Boulevard focuses on aging silent film queen Norma Desmond, who refuses to accept that her stardom has ended.
It also swept the board at the 1995 Tony Awards, winning seven awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score.

CARILLON TOWER & WAR MEMORIAL MUSEUM 1pm - 4.30pm Every day, except Monday - 01509 263370 - carillonmuseum@gmail.com - www.loughborough-rollofhonour.com LOST OSCILLATOR IS REPLACED
What’s an oscillator? I hear you say! Well it is an electronic circuit that produces sound and in our case it was used with the Morse key in the Yeomanry Room to transmit the Morse code and it was very popular with our younger visitors (and me). During the work in the close season the oscillator was disconnected and disappeared, silencing us forever, however Mr Chris Walker of the Loughborough & District Amateur Radio Club came to our rescue and gave us another one and we are now back on, QRK 5 Although Morse still has some applications, aircraft radio beams and the like, it is no longer used by the military and the French Navy’s last transmission was: ‘Calling all. This is our last cry before our eternal silence’ How poetic. Our Morse key is part of a WW1 Trench Signalling Lamp as seen in the picture above. The lamp is so shaped that it sends a narrow beam of light towards the position of the receiver who used a periscope or telescope to pick up and read the message.
MODEL MAKER STILL WANTED In the April Edition of the Carillon Chimes newsletter I asked if anyone could make 1:144 scale models of houses, Rows of terraced houses preferred. They are for a display to commemorate the Zeppelin raid to be held at the Charnwood Museum during January 2015. We already have a 1:144 model Zeppelin and some figures, just need the buildings to give a sense of size. Absolutely no response! So I am asking again. 1:144 is (I believe) the equivalent to ‘N’ gauge in the model railway world, no model railwayers out there?
DEATH PLAQUE GOES HOME Two or three years ago we were doing an exercise, ‘Significance Assessment’ on some of the objects in the museum, it is used to work out the value (not the monetary value) of the object to the collection, amongst the things we looked at were our collection of Death Plaques and I remembered that we had one commemorating a man from Kilwinning, in Ayrshire. It was just a training exercise and we did nothing with the assessments. Then a couple of weeks ago I was looking at something on the internet and Kilwinning came up. I did a search and found a photo of their war memorial, on it was a John Christie but the Death Plaque we have is named to John Chrystie, Marigold, a volunteer researcher with us came up with the following explanation: “All the evidence points to ‘Chrystie’ being the form of surname commonly used by the family, which is what ultimately matters. The evidence from documents relating to John and his family is as follows: “1911 census: Chrystie (The 1911 census was the first census where the form was normally filled in by the Head of the Household rather than an Enumerator. 1901 census: Chrystie (Census enumerator got it right) 1891 census Christie (Census enumerator wrote down the sound of the name) 1881 census Christie (Census enumerator wrote down the sound of the name) “John Chrystie’s will is apparently signed John Chrystie His entry in Soldiers’ personal

effects uses the surname form of Chrystie Commonwealth War Graves Commission: Their records all use the form John Chrystie The medal index card for John Chrystie includes a note which says: ‘Chrystie’ correct spelling of surname. Auth 0/55B “John Chrystie’s older brother Henry who enlisted on 5th September 1914 signed his name on his attestation form as Henry Chrystie. (Unlike his brother; John Henry’s service papers have survived.) When Henry was baptised, however, on 10th November 1891, the Minister of the Kirk entered his parents’ names as William and Grace Stewart Christie. The Minister had presumably never seen the preferred form of the surname written down.” Marigold Cleeve. Kilwinning has no museum as such but the Kilwinning Heritage Group man the Abbey Church clock tower and have a small collection of historical objects, having made contact with them and satisfied we had the right man, it was decided to transfer John Chrystie’s Death Plaque to them and they were delighted to receive it. Visit site: Kilwinning Heritage The local history group in Kilwinning .. What our records do not show is how the plaque ended up so far from the man’s home town?
VOLUNTEERING Do you enjoy meeting and engaging with people? Do you have time on your hands? We are always looking for help with the museum, the public cannot access the upper rooms unless a volunteer is present so the volunteer Museum Guide’s role is vital. Do not worry that you know little about military memorabilia you will be amazed how quickly you begin to sound like expert on the subject and to start you will be paired up with an experience guide. Even if you cannot commit to a regular slot you might be able to help us out covering absences, holidays, sickness etc. Email us!
On loan to us at the moment is this pocket watch which belonged to Henry Tyler, a survivor of the Battle of Frezenberg; it is now in the possession of his grandson, Stuart Tyler. Henry was a Corporal in ‘C’ Sqn Leicestershire Yeomanry and was on holiday with his wife and two children in Skegness when WW1 broke out. Determined to get back as quickly as possible he loaded his family onto his pony and trap and completed the 80 mile journey back in a single day; although his horse, ‘Nancy’, took several days to recover. Henry paraded in Loughborough with the rest of the regiment and sailed for France on 2 November 1914. He came through Frezenberg and was later posted to the Machine Gun Corps finally being demobbed in February 1919 having attained the rank of Squadron Quarter Master Sergeant (SQMS) and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) Henry and his wife Eliza had established the Western Laundry on Derby Road in 1910 which moved in 1938 further along the Derby Road to the premises many of you will remember.

MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT
NICKY MORGAN
T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk
I
would like to say a massive thank you for re-electing me as your Member of Parliament. It is a huge honour to represent this wonderful constituency, and I will continue to work hard for all constituents and be your voice in Westminster. I have been overwhelmed by the hundreds of messages of support from local residents. Please do contact me or my team if you are in need of assistance – my contact details are on this page. One of the favourite things I did quite a lot during the campaign was to stand in Loughborough market on Thursdays and Saturdays and chat to passing shoppers and visitors. The good news is that if you didn’t want to talk to me you didn’t have to! But I really valued the conversations I had, the queries raised and the points put to me. Thank you for all the engagement and honest feedback. We have now returned to Westminster and as a Government we are clear that our task is to spend the next five years fulfilling the commitments set out in our manifesto. We have three main principles to follow over the course of this Parliament. Firstly, we are putting working people front and centre of the new Government’s mission. This will mean introducing legislation within weeks to reform welfare, offer more apprenticeships, create two million jobs and help working parents with childcare costs. And for those who can’t work we will ensure they have the support they need at every stage of their lives. Secondly we will be very clear that in areas such as education we will govern with compassion and with a focus on social justice. I am delighted to have been reappointed as Secretary of State for Education as well as Minister for Women and Equalities by the Prime Minister.
I have been clear that I see education as a matter of social justice. Every child is entitled to a place at a good local school which will give them the best start in life. I want to see this become even more of a reality by the end of this Parliament. Since 2010 we have a million more pupils in schools rated good or outstanding but we need to go further and ensure that we have excellent schools and excellent teachers in all parts of our country. Finally we will be a “One Nation” Government that will act in the interests of the whole country. This means ensuring the economic recovery reaches all part of our country, from north to south, from east to west and it means continuing to rebalance our economy. Governing for the whole country also means bringing together the different nations of our United Kingdom. The Prime Minister has said that he wants to govern with respect and we will implement as fast as we can the devolution that all parties agreed for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. I believe the next five years will be very exciting for Loughborough, Leicestershire and the East Midlands. In the last Parliament we had to focus on recovery and repair and now we can build on that and focus on renewal. Finally, it was a real pleasure that my first post-election event as your newly re-elected MP was to attend the Girls Brigade Centenary and Reunion Dedication Service led by Deacon Jan Sutton at the Trinity Methodist Church. It was so lovely to see current and former members of the Girls Brigade and to hear all their stories and see their memorabilia. I look forward to seeing the current members on parade later this year.

HELP LIZ TO FUND RAISE FOR EPILEPSY ACTION I've known my friend Caroline since I was five years old and as long standing friends do, we've shared some highs and lows throughout our time together. So, in November 2003, when I found myself holding Caroline's second daughter, a beautiful little girl, Eloise, when she was just a day or so old, who knew that in just over a few weeks her life, Caroline's and the rest of her family's life would never be the same again; as at just 2 and a half weeks old Eloise began to have seizures and soon Caroline began to hear words such as Tonic Clonic and Myoclonic seizures as a result of Cortisol Dysplasia leading to Epilepsy. It was clear that her condition was serious, life threatening and that tiny Ellie would
require surgery which in itself would have a major impact on her life. Eloise was having over 100 seizures a day and at 3 months old went through a 13 hour operation called a partial haemispherectomy of the right front lobe of her brain. Again her seizures began to increase to around 100 a day and she faced more surgery at 6 months old. The effects were as if she had a stroke, with weakness along the left side of her body. Caroline gave her physiotherapy every day but the effects of her Epilepsy are far reaching, she cannot speak, cannot step far and is doubly incontinent and developmentally delayed, She needs a lot of help, but she always tries to help....Eloise loves to be socially included, loving school, music and has a wicked sense of humour.
Despite this Eloise is a brave little girl, facing surgery and hospital visits again and again and with the help of her family Eloise has been able to walk. She still has seizures, just one or two a night, lasting seconds instead of hours. Caroline now a single mum working in a Special Needs School works hard to ensure Eloise (and her other daughter Yasmin) has a happy life just like any 12 year old. When I held tiny Ellie all those years ago I had little understanding of how devastating Epilepsy could be, that's why when another long time friend suggested a group
of us give something back by taking part in Trek Fest I knew which charity I wanted to raise money and awareness for, Epilepsy Action.

OLCS THROUGH TO REGIONAL HEAT OF YOUNG ENTERPRISE COMPETITION A team of fifteen Year 12 Young Enterprise students from Our Lady’s Convent School, Loughborough have scooped a range of prizes in this year’s Young Enterprise competition. In the Area final they won Best Company Report, Best Environmental, Best Innovation and a place at the County final. At the County level they won awards for both Marketing and Innovation and were voted winners overall. They will now progress to the Regional competition later in May. The girls identified the need for a product to promote healthy eating to parents and young children during meal times. Their innovative idea was to produce a double sided placemat with nutritional guidelines to enable parents to plan well balanced meals for 4 to 10 year olds on one side and on the reverse there are fun educational activities to keep even the liveliest minds engaged. The product, called ‘Foodle’, has the strap line – Nibble then Scribble and has proved to be very popular. The team are delighted that their plan to fuel children’s imagination whilst encouraging healthy eating has been so well received. Both sides of the mat are wipe-able to cope with those inevitable messy mealtime moments and to allow for repeated interaction with the educational games. Mrs Nicola McDermott, Business and Economics Teacher who leads the Young Enterprise programme at the school said, “It was a fantastic night which many of the parents were there to watch, and some even shed a few tears! The girls were fantastic and as always did themselves and the school proud. The skills they learn throughout the Young Enterprise competition process will prove immensely useful in life and their achievements will add value to their UCAS applications. We are all so proud of them – well done girls.” PHOTO: Team of fifteen, year 12 Young Enterprise students from Our Lady’s Convent School.
EUROVISION FEVER AT OUR LADY’S CONVENT SCHOOL Whilst May 7th was the day when the UK went to the polls here in Loughborough there was another hotly contested competition pitting one European country against another. At 7pm the curtain rose on the first Eurovision Dance Contest at Our Lady’s Convent School. Students from Nursery up to Year 11 represented European countries as they battled it out in front of 11 judges and an audience of nearly 300 to win the coveted first place in the inaugural OLCS Eurovision Dance Contest.
Mr Marks-Jones, with 10 other judges, had the unenviable task of ranking the acts and eventually deciding on an overall winner. The students had trained for this event since September and had embraced the concept wholeheartedly.
On Saturday June 20th 7.30pm at the Cope Auditorium, the Loughborough Orchestra presents an evening packed full of dramatic moments from stage and screen. There is music for every taste and emotion! With a little imagination, the orchestra will take you on a journey through the heroics of Gladiator, across the wide plains of The Big Country and on to the bustling life of Paris in the mid 20th Century.
Audience members waved flags to support their chosen country and by the end of the evening the atmosphere was tense, as in true Eurovision style, the points were accumulated and the leaders fluctuated between several different countries. In the end the winning entry was France with the Year 10 and 11 students representing the film Burlesque. Our Lady’s Convent School has a recent history of links with the Eurovision Song Contest, in 2012 the whole School was behind a member of staff’s famous uncle – Engelbert Humperdinck and last year’s UK entry, Molly SmittenDownes was a past pupil. This year, Head of PE, Mrs Clair Knowland instated the Eurovision Dance Contest and through her own links with the OGAE (Organisation Générale des Amateurs de l'Eurovision) secured the support of OGAE President of the Eurovision UK, Mr Paul Marks-Jones.
A FEAST OF FILM AND STAGE MUSIC WITH THE LOUGHBOROUGH ORCHESTRA
Speaking before one of the many rehearsals Mrs Knowland said, “I personally love the Eurovision contest and have attended the event several times, the atmosphere is electric and the supporters passionate. When I proposed to the students at the start of the year, my plans to host this event they were very enthusiastic and I have been delighted with how hard they have worked and how professional their performances are. The judges had a very tough job deciding on a winner.”
You can travel to a fantasy time with dinosaurs reappearing to terrorise the earth or to the Land of Oz and the tales of its two most famous witches. Then there is a little fantasy woven around the life of Mozart (but no fantasy about the elegance of his Flute and Harp Concerto) And how could there be a selection of such drama without some deep emotions such as those found in West Side Story? With music from composers as diverse and expert as Gershwin, Tchaikovsky, Bernstein, Lloyd Webber and the “big daddy” of film music, John Williams, this promises to be a great evening. Tickets are available at £7.00, Concession £6.00 and Children £1.00, from secretary@ loughboroughorchestra.org.uk or from any member of the orchestra. Following exceptional demand for tickets at the last concert, it is recommended to obtain a ticket in advance to avoid disappointment. For more information see www. loughboroughorchestra.org.uk

BETHANY AND FRIENDS DONATE TO CHARITY
The two friends had a laugh about the amount of clothes and trinkets they had and how they hated to throw things away.
Summer had almost arrived and Bethany was emptying her house ready to give it a good clean, one by one she moved everything out into the garden so she could wipe down the walls, mop the floors and polish the windows till they sparkled.
Daniel Dog was walking past on his afternoon stroll when he heard the laughing, “What’s going on here then?” He said “Someone moving house?!”
She hopped out with a basket of hats and scarves then back in again, then she hopped out with a box of baking trays, then back in again. This went on for quite some time! Christie cat had heard the rattling of boxes and popped her head over the wall to find out what was going on. She could barely see Bethany over the huge pile of boxes!
Christie and Bethany explained what was going on and why they were laughing. “You don’t need to throw things you don’t use anymore away, have you considered donating it to charity?”
Bethany was just coming out of the house with another basket of hats when Christie asked her what she was doing. “I’m emptying my house so I can clean it,” Said Bethany “But I didn’t realise I had so much stuff! I don’t remember buying most of it and I’m sure I haven’t worn half of these hats!” Christie replied “It’s good to empty rooms out sometimes, I really need to do my house. I always find things I forgot I had or that I don’t use and are just taking up space”. “I don’t think it will all fit back in!” Joked Bethany. “I’m sure this can’t all me mine!”

Bethany though that this was a brilliant idea and so once she had finished cleaning, Christie and Daniel helped her to sort out what she wanted to keep and what she wanted to donate. The following day the friends all took Bethany’s donations to the local charity shop who were very happy to receive them. Bethany felt very happy to have made a difference to others by giving away things she didn’t want any more. Well done Bethany, giving to charity is a very kind thing to do. Can you think of anything you don’t use any more, or any clothes you have grown out of that you could donate? Why not ask your parents to help you sort your bedroom out and take some items down to a charity shop?

I WISH I’D LOOKED AFTER MY FEET! Oh, I wish I‘d looked after my feet! My nails are all tough and they’ve just had enough They’re all thick and yellow, poke though socks to say ‘hello’ I’m afraid they have just got me beat! How I wish I’d looked after my feet. Oh, I wish I’d looked after my feet! All the years of tight fashion have given a bashing My corns are a throbbing, I can’t do the shopping And I now have to carry a seat! If I’d only looked after my feet Oh, I wish I’d looked after my feet! My toe nails are in-growing, pointed shoes I’m a throwing! They were always too tight but I looked such a sight In sensible shoes, like a geek!! But, I wish I’d looked after my feet! Oh, I wish I’d looked after my feet! This fungus is spreading, my skin is all shedding The faint odour of cheese, it does nothing to please And I’m sweating so much with the heat Oh I wish I’d looked after my feet! Oh, I wish I’d looked after my feet! My nails they’re a crumbling, I can’t help a grumbling They’re unsightly in sandals, just like my love handles Oh! to be sexy and neat! I just wish I’d looked after my feet!
