So What Is Pilates?

That’s the question on many people’s lips when they first hear the name. Some people even say — it’s a bit like Yoga isn’t it? We may be aware of it from celebrity culture — Pilates is used by footballers to extend their careers. It’s used by Olympic athletes to fine tune and improve their performances. Professional golfers use Pilates to give them a stronger, more controlled swing. Film stars do Pilates to tone their bodies and keep themselves looking good for the camera. But, no, it’s not really like Yoga… Yoga and Pilates aim to do different things. Pilates is functional — it helps with mobility and flexibility, lets you improve the practical things you already do, and keeps you doing the things you want to do for longer. Try it for yourself. For FREE! You have nothing to lose. If you can get down to and and up from the ground unaided, and have no health issues, then Pilates — done correctly — with us can change your life.

Who Is Jane Thomas? Jane Thomas has been teaching Pilates in Loughborough now for 18 years — being one of the first Pilates Coaches in the East Midlands, teaching matwork group Pilates classes in Loughborough and many of the surrounding villages since before the year 2000.

Since then, Jane Thomas Pilates is now a whole team of eight Pilates Coaches qualified to the highest national and international standards, all teaching Pilates according to Jane’s philosophy, and all wanting to show you how Pilates in Loughborough can help you.

1916 German Chain A German Iron Watch Chain. A watch chain bearing the inscription ‘GOLD ZUR WEHR’ 1916 ‘EISEN ZUR EHR’ (Gold for Iron). During the First World War the people of Germany were encouraged to hand in gold, even wedding rings, to pay for the war effort. The wearing of iron jewellery made a statement, a very public display of your patriotism.

Republica Argentina Mug This is sitting in our store catalogued as an 'aluminium mug'. On the bottom is the crest of the Argentinian Navy and the inscription 'Republica Argentina' and 'Armada' Any Argentinians out there or experts on the equipment of their navy? What I really want to be told is that it is an issued mug to the Argentinian Navy circa Falklands War. This will transform it from a mug to a museum object.

Powder Horn A Powder Horn etched by a member of 'C' Coy 1st Bn 181 Infantry Regiment US Army with the badge of the Royal Anglian Regiment and presented to the Leicestershire & Derbyshire Yeomanry (LDY) to commemorate the two units training together in May 1977. This is a 'museum' object of tomorrow so we are pleased to add it to our collection. The horn recently appeared on eBay and was purchased by Mr Karl Charters an ex LDY member who donated it to us. Thank you Karl, letter in the post.

Latest News From Felis Catus American pet behaviourist Warren Eckstein said “In the beginning, God created man, but seeing him so feeble He gave him the cat.” Cats are currently the most popular pet in the world and evidence suggests they were living alongside humans by 6000BC, possibly earlier. Thought to be incarnations of gods, cats were worshipped in ancient Egypt and killing a cat was punishable by death. Egyptians shaved their eyebrows as a sign of mourning a cat’s death and mourned for months. In the ancient Egyptian city of Bubastis there are about three hundred thousand mummified cats in tombs. By 3700BC cats were a popular companion animal in Egypt and gained even more favour in their role as pest control agents on ships and in grain stores. It is said they saved the Egyptians from starvation by killing vermin in granaries. However cats were not always venerated. To the superstitious minds of the Middle Ages cats were thought to possess supernatural powers with involvement in witchcraft. The 1563 Witchcraft Act associated keeping cats with wickedness which resulted in the execution of innumerable cats and their owners. As cat owners know, cats are not subservient which was another trait resulting in their persecution at this time. It was considered their aloofness violated the biblical view that humans should have dominion over animals. Consequently cats suffered considerable torment and tyranny at the hands of the Christian Church. Fortunately the popularity of cats returned and by the Victorian era they were secure in the role of the beloved household pets that continues today. At the risk of upsetting dog-lovers, American writer and producer, Jeff Valdez, said “Cats are smarter than dogs, you can’t get eight cats to pull a sledge through snow” and all cat owners know “dogs have masters, cats have servants”. According to animal behaviourists dogs have become dependent on humans and should humans cease to exist they would find it difficult to survive. However as most cats still retain some of their wildness and hunting skills they would have no problem surviving without us. Cats have been the preferred pet of many famous people including

actors, authors, artists and scientists. Sir Isaac Newton invented the cat-flap for his moggies. Aldous Huxley said “If you want to write, keep cats” and genius Leonardo da Vinci said “The smallest feline is a masterpiece”. Cats have infiltrated many aspects of our daily lives and are often featured in commercial art and design imagery such as greetings cards, textiles and ornaments. How such a small, relatively insignificant animal can be so popular is quite a mystery, but mystery is probably the allure of cats. Sir Walter Scott agrees. He said “Cats are mysterious folk. There is more passing in their minds than we are aware of”. Currently the UK cat population is around 11.6 million which animal welfare organisations regard as a crisis. According to the charity ‘Cats Protection’ a single female cat can have 25,000 descendants within five years. The importance of neutering both male and female cats cannot be overestimated. Rescue centres are full of strays and abandoned cats and kittens. It is a myth that a female cat should have ‘just one litter’ and as they can go into heat at four months old it is essential they are spayed by that age. It is also crucial that male cats are neutered. Not only does neutering males prevent unwanted kittens but makes fighting less likely as well as spraying or contracting Feline Aids (FIV).

How Can You Help? Kittens are growing babies who need more nutrients than their adult counterparts but pregnant and lactating cats can also benefit from the extra nutrition in kitten food. I am one of thirty-five volunteer cat/ kitten fosterers for RSPCA Woodside Animal Centre and we are all kept busy throughout the year. Cats of all ages and circumstances are fostered for varying lengths of time. The number of abandoned pregnant cats or those with tiny kittens is heartbreaking and so unnecessary if only owners were more responsible. If fostering isn’t a possible commitment for you, kitten food is continually required at Woodside and donations are always welcome.

Staff And Customers Of Pets At Home Do It Again And Raise An Incredible £2,012.89 For Woodside Animal Centre Leicester is home to some of the biggest animal lovers in England, almost £5,000 has been raised for local rescue centres as a part of a summer fundraising drive for pets in need. For four weeks, members of the local community donated to help rescue pets in need by purchasing a ‘Scratch and Match’ card in Leicester Pets At Home stores for the Support Adoption For Pets Summer Fundraising Drive, putting themselves in with a chance of winning one of 200,000 prizes and in turn donating £1 to the charity. Over 430 Pets At Home stores took part in the national fundraiser across the UK, raising an impressive total of £545,486.51. The money has been granted to over 350 pet rescue stores across the country, helping to support the animals within their care. Amy Wilson, Fundraising Manager from Support Adoption For Pets, said: “Fundraising drives like this are vital to keeping local rescue centres open across the UK, and it’s great that we can continue to support rescue centres who work so hard to rehome pets in across the East Midlands.” Money raised within the Leicester Fosse Park and St Georges Retail Park Pets at Home stores will be supporting RSPCA Woodside Animal Centre, who have been overwhelmed by the support given to the Summer Fundraising Drive from the local community.

For further information call Julie Argyle on 0116 2336677 or visit; www.rspcaleicester.org.uk/supportus-2/animal-fostering/

Jane Cooper-Peers Corporate Partnership Manager at Woodside Animal Centre said: "The work we do, and the positive impact we have, both on our animals and the local community can only be achieved with local community support within Leicestershire and Rutland. We’re so very grateful to all the fantastic Pets at Home customers in both Fosse Park and St Georges Retail Park stores for their incredible generosity. The donation will make a huge difference to the animals in our care.”

It was deeply disappointing to be told in July that the Government does not intend to electrify the Midland Mainline – the intercity train line connecting Leicestershire to London. The electrification project was confirmed by the Department for Transport in 2012 after many years of lobbying. I had helped to lead a cross-party campaign of MPs who worked with councillors, LEPs and business leaders up and down the line to make the case, both economic and environmental for our line to be electrified. At a time when the Government is wanting us to move from diesel to electric cars it makes no sense to give the ok to trains and an intercity line which will still create diesel fumes. Millions of pounds has already been spent on preparing the line for electrification. Although we will still get some of the other planned improvements which will improve journeys I do feel it is very unfair that the Midlands should lose out on this major investment because the costs of other electrification projects in other parts of the country have been higher than expected. I shall continue to call for our line to be electrified and to work with local councils and businesses on this. On a more cheerful note it was a huge pleasure to attend the

colourful and joyous Mela in the town centre in August. There were many fabulous stalls, great food, brilliant entertainment and a real community spirit. I’d like to congratulate everyone involved in the organisation. I know these events don’t happen by magic, but take a lot of planning and hard work. The effort is appreciated by everyone who attended. In order to appreciate current events it is always helpful to understand our history. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Civil War Exhibition which is on at the Old Rectory Museum in Loughborough. This is a fascinating period of history and the Midlands was the scene of some of the most dramatic events and battles. If you have some time one Saturday the exhibition is open 11am-3pm until October and I would really recommend it. Another exhibition I am hoping to see is the Women at War Exhibition which has been organised by the Loughborough Library Local Studies Volunteers. This exhibition is on at the Library until 26th September and entry is free when the library is open. Finally don’t forget to book your tickets for the next wonderful Loogabarooga Festival which takes place across town from the 18th – 24th October. More details at www.loogabarooga.com

Wearing Two Hats Is Too Many In May, just over 100 days ago, I had the privilege of being elected to Leicestershire County Council for the South West Loughborough Division - an area that covers some 10,000 residents in the areas of Nanpantan, Outwoods and Grange Park. The middle of those three I already represent at Charnwood Borough Council, and my frustrations with having to constantly explain to residents why seemingly connected problems were actually dealt with by two completely different authorities, was the main driver for me to stand for the County Council, seeking to be elected to both organisations, as a one-manstop for residents. The establishment of two layers of local government in the early 1970’s was probably seen as an improvement on the previous system, but times have changed, and there are now better models for providing services to residents. Leicestershire County Council covers the whole of the the County outside the City (which is a single tier, standalone Council of about 330,000 people, with its own directly elected mayor) and represents about 670,000 people. It’s services and responsibilities include: education (although in Leicestershire, since almost all our schools are Academies, this is now mostly limited to school admissions and some primary schools); social care; highways and buses; libraries and waste management (tips, rather than household collections) and trading standards. Charnwood District Council is one of the largest district councils in England and includes about 180,000 people (a much larger share of the County Council than any of the other district councils in the county). It’s responsibilities and services include: council housing; parks and open spaces in Loughborough; planning applications; rubbish collection and recycling; running elections; leisure centres; community support and grants; collecting Council Tax for both councils, the police and fire authority; and running Loughborough’s town hall.

However, there are glitches - if a resident has a complaint about the state of the pavement outside their house, and also the path that runs from that pavement, through an open space next to their house, then the first pavement has to be dealt with by the County Council, but the second path by the District Council. Why should this be a problem to the resident? It shouldn’t. But the structures put in place in the 1970’s make no sense when there is a basic and simple problem. In the short term, I’m trying to do what I can to be a oneman-stop for solving residents problems - but the system doesn’t serve residents well, and there are needless duplications of management and councillors, that could save residents money. There are also significant differences in level of service and response times between authorities and departments too obvious to those of us that originated in private businesses that always had to respond to consumers and their needs. It’s time for us to look again at how services are provided to residents and to adapt the current structures to work more efficiently for residents. I personally believe that a single authority based on Charnwood’s current boundaries would be a good starting point - there are as many single tier councils in England smaller than Charnwood as there are larger - so we know that a single tier council based on Charnwood as it is would be workable, but I’m also conscious that we are surrounded by three cities, each of about 300,000 people, alongside a new greater Birmingham Combined Authority with Andy Street as its new mayor so a single authority of a size able to match and work with those would be a decent objective. Whatever changes are coming, we have to keep focus on why local government exists, who it serves and how it can be made better. In the meantime, I’m here to try and make sense of what we have.
