Charnwood Entrepreneur Is Back In Business Stronger Than Ever Following A Life Changing Injury Shepshed businesswoman, Jo Finch, is back in business with her new company Charnwood Bookkeeping. At the end of 2016, Jo broke her elbow in a fall and needed two hospital operations, preventing her from running her catering business. Unfortunately there were complications and Jo has lost significant movement in her arm, which may never be regained. 10 months after the accident, Jo was able to return to work but was unable to continue in the catering business. However, Jo has a strong work ethic and was determined to start a new business which would help other local businesses. Jo has 30 years’ experience in business finance and is passionate about helping local small businesses to get their finances right. “I wanted to set up a business which could provide more than just bookkeeping. With my knowledge and experience I can analyse the financial health of a business and provide a tailor-made service to add significant value. This includes helping new businesses to set up their finances so they can concentrate on developing their venture. I want to provide a complete financial service, including Self Assessment tax returns and payroll management. I am delighted to be back to work and feel stronger than ever. My new business is going well and I am enjoying working with small businesses, including sole traders, partnerships and not-for-profit organisations. I want to help business owners do what they do best and let me take care of the rest.” Jo is a qualified bookkeeper and is licenced and regulated by the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB). Recently Jo spent 4 months studying with Ideal Schools (www.idealschools.co.uk) to gain the qualifications to operate her own professional bookkeeping practice. Charnwood Bookkeeping offers friendly and professional services including bookkeeping for small to medium size businesses, Self Assessments tax returns, VAT returns, payroll and New Business Start-up help. For a free, no obligation, consultation, contact Jo Finch on 07903 329763, or email jo@charnwoodbookkeeping.co.uk or visit the website www.charnwoodbookkeeping.co.uk

Member Of Parliament

Nicky Morgan

T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk You may have noticed in early July that lots of flower boxes and hanging baskets could be seen around Loughborough. Placed around our town as part of the entry to the In Bloom annual awards they really do brighten up Loughborough and join the beautiful flowers in Queen’s Park. The Loughborough In Bloom entries started thanks to a determination across the town that we should brighten up Loughborough. The talented Bloom team ended up winning a succession of awards including Gold. One of the In Bloom stalwarts has been Harry Cook. Harry’s house is the one with all the flowers facing the Epinal Way/Forest Road roundabout. So it was very sad to hear earlier this month that Harry had died so unexpectedly. The last time I saw him was to admire the 100 soldiers’ boots which had been planted as part of Armed Forces Day. I know the thoughts of many, many people are with Harry’s family and he will be enormously missed. He made a real and lasting contribution to Loughborough. Thank you Harry. Armed Forces Day in June brought lots of people into Loughborough and it was a pleasure to join the Mayor and other dignitaries at the Army Reserve Centre on Leicester Road to see the unveiling of Charnwood Council’s first heritage plaque. Although many people will be away over the next few weeks there is still plenty going on locally – including the everpopular Loughborough by the Sea held from 12th-15th August and the Mela which is held on Sunday 19th August. If you are at

a loose end then do pop down to town and join in the celebrations. Another popular returning event will be the Loogabarooga festival which returns during the October half-term. We have a proud history of children’s literature locally thanks to our connection with Ladybird books. More details can be found at: www.goleicestershire.com/ Loughborough/loogabarooga. aspx Local resident Steve Cuff has set up the Loughborough Air Quality Protection Group (more information at www. laqpg.org.uk). The group is a coalition of interested parties and is particularly focusing on the environmental concerns felt by many about the siting of an incinerator by Biffa at Newhurst Quarry in Shepshed. I’ve consistently voiced my worries about this, spoken out at planning hearings and consultation events and worked with local residents. Many of us have expressed our reservations to the Environment Agency in their recent permit consultation. Finally, it is sad to hear that this will be the very last edition of the Loughborough Community Eye. Over the years I have loved writing this column, I hope that you have enjoyed reading it. If you would like to keep up to date with the ways that I work in and for Loughborough then please do visit my website, nickymorgan. com, and sign up for my monthly newsletter. My very best wishes go to the production team of this magazine who have put so much hard work into producing it.

Charnwood based - 20 years experience One step and you’re there!

Happiness Program Most people have very busy lives managing families, homes and careers. The demands we have on us often seem overwhelming and we can feel stressed, worried, angry or fatigued. We can also incur stress, tension, anxiety and depression from challenging or crisis moments in life. Physical and emotional stress, whether low grade or severe, unduly influences the quality of our lives. Many diseases are linked to stress and the immune system is weakened by it. Our relationships suffer from stress. It affects the mind, causing us to hang on to unnecessary worry, anxiety and regret, and negative emotions such as fear, anger or jealousy. However, this is actually unnecessary - the power to reduce stress is already within us, it is only a matter of learning a few ways to unlock this. The Art of Living’s Happiness Program provides practical, natural techniques that are effective in reducing stress, anxiety and depression, and will cultivate lasting peace of mind, happiness and better health. With this knowledge, we can enjoy our lives in fullness and with greater positivity. Workshop Contents Secrets of the Breath: Sudarshan

Kriya, a take-home yogic breathing technique that quickly cleans out your stress and raises your energy, bringing you back to a clear and positive state of mind. Scientifically Backed Results: Higher levels of optimism, greater levels of antioxidant enzymes, stronger immunity, improved emotional regulation and more. Mastering the Mind: Interactive processes, and unique conversations about simple points that will help every aspect of your life. Yoga & Guided Meditation: Easy yoga for everyday life for greater health, focus and relaxation with unique guided meditations. Free 'Everyone In Harmony' And “Time To Sing“ Course Due to the overwhelming success of last year’s Learn to sing course in February and October we are holding another course from Monday 3rd September through to November. There are many men who would love to sing but most never get around to trying, don’t have the opportunity or maybe are too self-conscious to give it a go but the simple fact is that just about everyone can sing. Attendees learn within a group which makes it less daunting, there are no embarrassing public auditions and it’s With the professional help of our Musical Director Ian Phillips and Assistant MD Jim Pollock participants will be helped to discover their voice, learn the techniques of making the most of it and how to use it in four-part acappella harmony with others. The Edible Forest Festival’s Back With Added Ingredients! The annual Edible Forest Festival is back this autumn in locations across Charnwood Forest between 9-16th September. The Festival is a great opportunity to experience a smorgasbord of tantalising food and drink experiences celebrating local produce and providers, in unique locations across the ancient woodlands of Charnwood Forest. Appetising highlights include: • The Secret Gourmet – a forest- inspired dining experience in a secret location created by renowned local chefs John Duffin and Paul Leary. Where? Now, that would be telling, but previous sold out events have taken place at Nanpantan Hall and Maplewell School • Tea in the Tower at Old John is your chance to enjoy this picturesque local landmark with its beautiful views of Bradgate Park whilst indulging in a fabulous locally sourced afternoon tea, created by the team at the Grey Lady Deli. • Family Forest Food Adventure in the heart of the Outwoods - All the family can spend time foraging for berries, acorns and nettles and cooking with guided walks and workshops and fun events. Explore the forest then relax with a cup of forest-brewed nettle tea, or tea and cakes from the Big Red Bus. • How about Forest Funk a woodland boogie night with a DJ playing disco, soul, and R&B under the stars. Plenty of fuel for your dancing feet with Burleighs Gin, Charnwood Cider, Everards Beers and locally sourced venison burgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers. This year there’s lots of exciting new events taking place including: • Dine in a Pod under the night sky deep in the forest at Abbot's Oak Manor House. Imagine dining inside an enchanting dome enjoying Charnwood’s finest produce, either starting the day with a luxurious brunch with a glass of bubbly, an afternoon picnic or gazing up at the stars enjoying a fabulous sharing platter of tasty local produce. • Supper on the move? Ding ding! The Safari Supper Bus will transport you throughout the ancient forest starting at the Griffin Inn, Swithland then a delicious main course at the White Horse, Quorn before a mouth watering dessert at the Waterside Inn before heading back to The Griffin for a nightcap. There’s something to satisfy everyone at this years Festival, but book soon, lots of our events sell out quickly and we’d hate anyone to go hungry! www.edibleforest.co.uk The Edible Forest Festival is brought to you by Leicestershire Promotions supported by Charnwood Borough Council and Everards. Edible_Forest #EdibleForest18 EdibleForest edibleforestfestival

Borough Councillor

Jonathan Morgan

E: cllr.jonathan.morgan@charnwood.gov.uk Harry Cook Tributes have been paid to local stalwart Harry Cook who played an instrumental part in the success of Loughborough in Bloom. Harry’s work for Loughborough in Bloom and the community in general has been immense over the years. His and Pat’s home is one of the most recognisable sites in Loughborough thanks to their stunning gardens which have won countless awards and praise. It is perhaps fitting that the night before he was taken ill, their beautiful home, one of the highlights in the annual bloom judging, appeared on BBC Gardeners’ World – the pinnacle for many gardeners. Harry has literally helped Loughborough bloom and he will be sorely missed by all - I hope that we can find a suitable way of remembering him and his achievements for the town. Supporting Inward Investment Charnwood was visited by the Mayor of the Jianyang Municipal Government on July 30 as overseas interest in developing links for economic development and investment purposes has grown in recent months, following a visit by Loughborough College to China. A Memorandum of Understanding has been drafted between the Council and the Jianyang Municipal Government, which sets out the framework in which the two authorities can work together to promote and encourage trade, investment, cultural links and tourism between the two localities. In particular they will work to develop projects that promote business and educational links and the sharing and development of research, skills and technical expertise. I’ve always said Charnwood has a lot to offer business at home and abroad, so I was delighted to welcome the mayor of Jianyang Municipal Government and his team from China to the Borough, as we look to encourage trade links overseas. With our central UK location,

world-class university and a global reputation for science and innovation, Charnwood is a prime commercial location. However, we need to make sure we are appearing on corporate radars and one way of doing that is by building links with authorities in other countries, as we are doing in China.

New Cemetery For The Town Charnwood is seeking views on sites for new burial ground as the current cemetery in Leicester Road is expected to be full within four years. The Council has investigated a number of options but has identified three viable options which could provide future burial space. They are land at Allendale Road, land at Nanpantan and part of Shelthorpe Golf Course although the nine holes would be retained as part of an improved facility. The consultation runs until September 23 and comments are being invited - a number of options were investigated, but these three are the ones considered viable. Each has strengths and weaknesses and we know people will have strong views on some or all of them. All three sites are owned by the Council. Other options were considered and have been discounted for a number of reasons including cost, location or other factors. More information is on the Council website. On average there is just over one burial a week in Loughborough (60 a year), with many more using the crematorium, which will not be moving. The consultation runs until September 23 and people can have a say and find out more at www.charnwood.gov.uk/cemetery _consultation ….and finally A warm and heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Community Eye who have done so much to keep residents informed about what’s been going on locally – I understand that this will be the last Loughborough edition – I’m sure residents will miss the magazine.

County Councillor

Max Hunt

E: max.hunt@leics.gov.uk An Interview With Our Police Commissioner Two years ago we elected our second Police Commissioner in Leicestershire. Lord Willy Bach works side by side with the Chief Constable, replacing the old Police Committee on which I was for a short while. I put some key questions to him: Max Hunt: How can we build long term relationships with the police and share local intelligence in the community? Lord Willy Bach: Beat officers are known as Dedicated Neighbourhood Officers (DNOs) because they are essentially dedicated to one area. Many do stay in post for a good period so that they build relationships with key local people, partners, stakeholders and of course get to understand the problems experienced locally. Ironically, because of the skills they develop and the value of the work they deliver they are prime candidates for progression, so some do move on more readily than one would like. Remember, however, that Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) provide the day to day visible face of policing for neighbourhood teams. They very much engage with local people, understand local problems and the way to access police and other provision locally. These officers do tend to remain in an area for a longer period. Also look out for a new venture called People Zones. This is an exciting project as it will affect all forms of society, supporting people and creating a healthier community. Max Hunt: What crimes form your highest priority when it comes to police resources? Lord Willy Bach: There are some very serious crimes which at times draw officers away from their immediate community. Examples of this are those homicides where for a period a large number of officers are required to carry out the investigation and engagement necessary. Equally, offences such as modern slavery, rape and sexual exploitation require full resourcing. However, the harm resulting from any offence can be very high in certain circumstances, which is why I tend to focus on five themes in my Police and Crime Plan:

victims; vulnerability; visibility; viable partnerships and value. Max Hunt What is the force doing to combat drugs being sold to young people in particular? Lord Willy Bach: One of the most effective ways is by being intelligence led and taking direct action. We receive a considerable amount of intelligence from both Crimestoppers (tel. 0800 555111) and through local teams engaging well with their communities, enabling us to search people, vehicles and of course dwellings under search warrants. The force is also involved with schools and colleges around education. We do this alongside other agencies such as youth services and together the health, social and personal risks are made clear. Max Hunt: How can you help us protect our children from online abuse, bullying and grooming? Or is it primarily an issue for schools and parents? Lord Willy Bach: There are some opportunities here for all of us! There are some great resources online on the Force’s website, and of course young people do receive education and support at school. Parents without doubt have a huge role to play. Creating a stronger, open and vibrant local community indirectly helps young people to have confidence, self-esteem, and the type of relationships to report concerns to those adults they can and should trust.

Max Hunt: What advice do you have to protect our homes and vehicles from theft? Lord Willy Bach: There is a really useful ‘toolkit’ on our website to help us all play our part in preventing ourselves becoming a victim of crime. Some of them are wonderfully simple and easy to do, such as using timers on lights at home when we are out, always locking and not leaving valuables on show in our cars. One to think about is where to keep car-keys at home in case of a burglary to steal the keys and then the car. They need to be out of view and in a place you’ll become accustomed to, but not obvious to a would-be thief. For online advice see: https:// leics.police.uk/advice-andinformation/crime-prevention
