So What Is Pilates?
That’s the question on many people’s lips when they first hear the name. Some people even say — it’s a bit like Yoga isn’t it?
Have a FREE Taster Session on us!
But, no, it’s not really like Yoga… Yoga and Pilates aim to do different things. Pilates is functional — it helps with mobility and flexibility, lets you improve the practical things you already do, and keeps you doing the things you want to do for longer. Try it for yourself. For FREE! You have nothing to lose. If you can get down to and and up from the ground unaided, and have no health issues, then Pilates — done correctly — with us can change your life.
We may be aware of it from celebrity culture — Pilates is used by footballers to extend their careers. It’s used by Olympic athletes to fine tune and improve their performances. Professional golfers use Pilates to give them a stronger, more controlled swing. Film stars do Pilates to tone their bodies and keep themselves looking good for the camera.
Who Is Jane Thomas? Jane Thomas has been teaching Pilates in Loughborough now for 18 years — being one of the first Pilates Coaches in the East Midlands, teaching matwork group Pilates classes in Loughborough and many

Since then, Jane Thomas Pilates is now a whole team of eight Pilates Coaches qualified to the highest national and international standards, all teaching Pilates according to Jane’s philosophy, and all wanting to show you how Pilates can help you.
How Do I Start Pilates? Two ways — small-group matwork classes in a venue near you, or micro-group sessions (up to 3 people) in our Loughborough Studio. If you have never done Pilates before, email us and we’ll give you the options. This might be an Absolute Beginners Class in a venue local to you, or a three-session Absolute Beginners Workshop for up to 3 people in our Studio. Either way, you’ll be taught Pilates from first principles in a graded, step-by-step, enjoyable and understandable way. We offer Absolute Beginners lots of things you simply won’t get anywhere else:
1 a maximum of only
10 participants (3 in a Workshop) which means the Coach can work with everyone individually 2 weekly emails which support your Pilates, and give a link to view a video of each week’s exercises, to practise at home 3 a 52-page, highly illustrated, full colour course book, which looks at each week’s exercises in greater depth. You can see samples of the course book and videos on our website.
I’m Not A Beginner
We have many, many classes each week, at all levels, in several venues in and around Loughborough. The reunification project will connect two separate halves of the Great Central to create an eighteen mile heritage line running through the East Midlands. Five hundred metres of long demolished track, bridges and embankments need to be replaced to establish the link. A multimillion pound investment has already seen a new bridge built to carry Great Central steam hauled trains over Network Rail's Midland Main Line. Michael Gough, Managing Director of the Great Central Railway said, "We have had people from around the world asking us about the new railway bridge. They're also asking which part of reunification we are tackling next! The answer is, we're going to restore the existing historic canal bridge at Loughborough so it is ready to carry trains again. The appeal is in part to pay for the repairs and also to fund the ongoing design work for the rest of the reunification scheme." The elegant canal bridge is the only surviving part of the original Victorian link between the two halves of the Great Central, not demolished after the line was originally closed. However, the metal work is corroded and the brick work in a poor state and it requires substantial work before trains can use it again. Using techniques developed for the national rail network the bridge is expected to be repaired without being lifted. To minimise disruption to the boats passing underneath the repairs are set to take place in a quieter time of the year for the canal. If the funds can be raised in time, work will start on the bridge in Autumn 2018. Meanwhile, the new railway bridge is on track to be completed before Christmas this year. Contractors have continued to install the decking and face the concrete parts of the structure with bricks. "We have made a significant start on reunification," continued Michael. "Far from being beyond our reach, the rail bridge is the first part of the project to be completed. There is a long way to go before trains can run and a lot of work to do. However, the more people who can support our appeal, the sooner the canal bridge will be done and that's another part of the jigsaw in place. Reunification will bring economic benefit to the area, creating jobs and attracting more visitors. We're committed to making it happen and hope people will share the vision and make a donation." Donations can be made online at www.gcrailway.co.uk/unify or by cheque (made payable to the David Clarke Railway Trust) sent to 'Canal Bridge Appeal, David Clarke Railway Trust, Lovatt House, 3 Wharncliffe Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 1SL.

Council Agrees To Give Land To Taylor’s Bell Foundry To Support Its Future
Subscribers to the Charnwood Borough Council garden waste service are being reminded to make sure they’ve put their stickers on their bins.
An area of Council-owned land is set to be given to Taylor’s Bell Foundry to help support its future. Charnwood borough councillors agreed in principle to transfer ownership of the land at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday 16th November.
Only bins with stickers – proof of a current subscription - will be emptied and up to the 24th November the Council had refused to empty just over 100 bins which had not displayed stickers.
The small piece of land is just under 4,000 square foot and will be used as part of planned major development at the bell foundry.
If you have received your sticker, please make sure it is on your brown garden waste bin. If you have not received your sticker, please contact the Council on 01509 634563. Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, lead member for major contracts, said: “We have sent around 34,000 stickers to customers and the vast majority have put them on their bins and they are now being emptied. We’d like to remind people who may not have had a chance to put their stickers on bins to do so as soon as possible, otherwise they may not be emptied. If you haven’t received one, please get in touch with us.” The stickers need to be placed on the brown garden waste bins underneath the handle and have been introduced to make sure only paid-for subscriptions are emptied and that the service is operating as efficiently as possible. If a sticker is not displayed then the bin will not be emptied and crews will only return on the next scheduled collection date. A hanger explaining the reason for non-collection, which can also be for having the wrong items in the bin, will be left for customers. If you haven’t signed up for the service, you can do so at any time. It costs £28 for a 12-month subscription (when paid by direct debit), which is cheaper than the national average. Please visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/ gardenwaste or call 01509 634563. The scheme costs £28 a year (when paid by direct debit) for each bin. The garden waste scheme means: * your brown garden waste bin is collected 25 times a year * you save numerous trips to the tip * you will be sent a new sticker every year unless you cancel * paying by direct debit is easier and cheaper

PHOTO BELOW: Jake Dominy, apprentice bricklayer and Endeavour Award winner and 2017 Apprentice of the Year, apprentice carpenter/ joiner, Ben Smith.
William Davis Homes Announces Ben Smith As Apprentice Of The Year A 19 year old carpenter/joiner has been announced as the William Davis Homes Apprentice of the Year 2017. Ben Smith, from Loughborough, joined the HBF 5 star housebuilder as an apprentice in 2015 and is now in his third year of training. Currently learning his trade at one of the company’s newest developments, Cawston Rise in Rugby, Warwickshire, Ben is being mentored by joinery apprentice master, Graham Clarke and joiner, Hudson Hollingworth. Held annually to reward the top two apprentices of the year, William Davis Homes’ apprentice award evening is a hugely popular event, attended by apprentices, their parents, employees, college tutors and apprenticeship officers. At the 2017 ceremony, held last month (23rd November 2017), Ben was announced the winner. William Davis Homes’ M&E and apprentice manager, Gary Long commented: “Ben has not only achieved excellent academic results in his studies at Leicester College but also demonstrated a positive approach to his apprenticeship. Ben’s mentors regularly praise his progression and determination to make the most of every learning opportunity; describing him as conscientious, well-mannered and enthusiastic. A popular member of his site team, Ben is a deserving winner of the 2017 Apprentice of the Year award.” The runner-up and recipient of the Endeavour Award was fourth year apprentice bricklayer, Jake Dominy. Highly focused and hard-working, Jake has had an outstanding 2017, becoming the East Midlands SkillBuild champion and finishing fourth in the national finals; receiving the Leicester College Apprenticeship Award for bricklaying; and is a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category in the forthcoming Leicester Mercury Education Awards. Amanda Drabant, CITB apprenticeship officer added: “It’s been difficult this year to help choose the correct two winners as there were many potential candidates. Ben and Jake are polite, dedicated and keen to learn; and each of them shows very promising signs of becoming an exceptional tradesman. They both consistently demonstrate what we have come to expect of award-winning apprentices.” William Davis Homes has been running its Apprentice of the Year awards evening since 1971 and more than half the former winners still remain with the company, including in senior management roles.
The Loughborough Bellfoundry Trust has submitted a £10 million bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to support the project. If the application is successful, the Council will transfer the land to the foundry at zero cost. It will provide a new entrance, employee office space and a new national bell archive, which are critical to the development of the business. Taylor’s is now the only major bell foundry in the UK and the largest in the world. The project aims to secure its long-term future by protecting its heritage, providing education and research and attracting more visitors. Councillor Eric Vardy, Lead Member for Planning, Inward Investment and Tourism Strategy said: “I’m pleased that Cabinet has agreed in principle to transfer the land to the bell foundry. Taylor’s is a vital part of our local heritage and it’s important that it’s preserved for the future. The Council is committed to supporting the economic development of the borough, including helping local businesses to grow. This development would also increase tourism and benefit local residents through the regeneration of the area.” Andrew Wilby, Chairman of John Taylor & Co, speaking on behalf of the Trustees of the Loughborough Bellfoundry Trust said: “We are very grateful for this support from the Council. The proposed developments will help ensure the long-term future for bellfounding in Loughborough and help sustain the world renown, unique craft skills and employment in this area.” The decision will come into force subject to a call-in period of five working days from the date the decision is published. Can You Identify This Badge? Yet another badge that has left us puzzled, a small lapel badge, the fitting on the back is for a button hole so perhaps suggests a badge for a male. It may be illustrated upside down but we are sure someone out there will tell us.
Another Badge Just occasionally we come across a badge in our collection that leaves us stumped. This one is catalogued 'unidentified' and having searched the internet I understand why. It appears to be a Royal Signals cap badge but instead of a crown it has a crescent moon and star. Turkish springs to mind but their crescent moon is always shown the other way around. The motto at the bottom is very difficult to read but it is not the motto of the Royal Signals (Certa Cito) the first word is too worn to read and the second word appears to be 'Yadini'.
Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year From All At The Carillon Memory Of Pte David Nix Extremely good turnout for the Service of Dedication in memory of Pte David Nix. Killed in Korea 7 Nov 1952. The service started with a welcome speech from the Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Pauline Ranson and the service was conducted by the Rev Wendy Dalrymple. A resume of David's life was read out by Mr Richard Barnett, David's nephew and the young son of Warrant Officer Danial Bell of the Royal Australian Army, Isaac, led the reciting of the Lords Prayer. Charnwood Excels In Tourism Awards Charnwood businesses, venues and destinations have shined in the prestigious Leicestershire Promotions 2017 Tourism and Hospitality Awards.
Plans To Improve Loughborough Market For The Future A number of innovative ideas are being considered to help shape the future of Loughborough market. An independent review has put forward several ideas to help the market to continue to flourish after being crowned Best Large Outdoor Market in Britain in January 2017. Ideas include:
Crowds Get Into The Festive Spirit At Christmas Lights Switch-On
• Make the market easier to access by developing an improved layout • Expand the existing market into Cattle Market, Devonshire Square and Market Street to create more space for traders
• Create an entertainment area to attract new customers to the market
This year’s festivities kicked-off with the Christmas lights switchon in Loughborough Market Place on Sunday, November 26.
• Create a street food quarter to include outside seating for al fresco dining
Crowds gathered to see Capital FM host the event for the first time, with breakfast’s Dino, Pete and Tyles as well as afternoon presenter, Claire. The entertainment included a DJ set, live competitions and music videos on a giant screen.
• The review also considers how the ideas could benefit the town centre, by
The team from Capital were joined by the cast of this year’s town hall pantomime, Robin Hood, as well as entertainment from Loughborough Students’ Union Sing and St Botolph’s School Choir. During the day there was a charity market and a French market as well as arts and crafts, fairground rides and a Santa’s grotto in Carillon Court. The Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor Pauline Ranson, was at the event and said: “We've had another fantastic lights switchon this year. It was great to have Capital FM hosting the switch-on for the first time and the day has been a hit with the whole family. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the festivities today." The Christmas programme is organised by Charnwood Borough Council in partnership with Love Loughborough.
• Extend the closing time of the market on occasion past 4pm increasing footfall to surrounding businesses and improving the customer experience of not just the market, but the town centre as a whole.
Councillor Jenny Bokor, Lead Member for Loughborough at Charnwood Borough Council said: “We’re really proud of Loughborough market. This year it was crowned the Best Large Outdoor Market in Britain and it is popular with many residents. However, it’s important to ensure that we continue to invest in the market and the town centre so that it continues to flourish in the future. The continued growth of supermarkets and an increase in online shopping has put pressure on retail markets all over the country, including Loughborough. The review has looked at successful markets such as London’s Spitalfields to see how contemporary ideas can improve what is already an excellent market, to make sure it’s successful for years to come. We have been talking to traders and town centre businesses to help us develop the market and we will continue to work together to decide which ideas will be implemented.” John Ashford, representative for the market traders said: “We welcome the review and looking at new ideas for the market. A number of them look interesting, but there are some big issues in there, such as the market layout, which need to be looked at carefully. We look forward to working with the council to develop the ideas so we can best benefit the market and the town centre.” The independent market review was carried out by Kerching. It was commissioned by the Loughborough BID and supported by Charnwood Borough Council. The purpose of the review is to develop a vision for Loughborough retail market for the next five-10 years. The review also looks at the impact of the market on the town centre and its retailers. The next steps will be to work with traders to explore the proposals and set up a working group to develop an action plan. To read the full report and for more information visit: www.charnwood.gov.uk/loughborough_market_review
The borough picked up a total of 16 awards and while the borough council was pleased to see Queen’s Park commended and the town of Loughborough being highly commended, particular delight was taken by the number of awards received in Charnwood. Cllr Eric Vardy, the Council’s lead member for tourism strategy, said: “We are obviously pleased Queen’s Park and Loughborough did well but the real success for Charnwood is the number of awards won in the borough. It was great to see places like Bradgate Park, cafes, restaurants, food producers and more winning categories or being commended. This shows how strong an offer Charnwood has for tourists and it is becoming increasingly important to our local economy and something we should support. Many congratulations to all the businesses which enjoyed success at the tourism awards. We now have to continue to build upon that success. The Council is currently looking at how to better market Loughborough and develop the town centre and its award-winning markets. There’s a lot of work to be done and it will take time, but the borough has a positive future.” The Charnwood winners in the tourism awards were: Category Winners 1. Horseshoe Cottage Farm, Cropston (two categories) 2. The Café Next Door, Woodhouse Eaves 3. Imago – Holywell Park 4. Imago, Loughborough 5. Charnwood Cider 6. Bradgate Park 7. Stonehurst Farm, Mountsorrel 8. Deer Herd at Bradgate Park 9. John’s House, Mountsorrel Highly Commended 1. The town of Loughborough 2. Bom Bom Patisserie, Loughborough 3. PETER And That’s Enough Loughborough 4. The Café Next Door, Woodhouse Eaves Commended 1. Queen’s Park, Loughborough 2. Knead Good Bread, Woodhouse Eaves

Fundraisers Donate £5,000 To Defence And National Rehabilitation Centre A joint campaign between Loughborough Endowed Schools and the
Rempstone Fundraising Committee has raised a total of £5,000 for the Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC).
Due to open in 2018, the state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility at the
Stanford Hall Estate will provide purpose-built accommodation for military personnel, with a focus on both their physical and mental wellbeing.
The project, which aims to create a world-leading clinical rehabilitation
centre for the armed forces, has taken three years to build and will cover over 43,000m².
Jim Doherty, Chief Operating Officer at Loughborough Endowed Schools, explained that they were keen to support the centre:
“The DNRC will be a world-leading facility for the rehabilitation of our
military personnel. This is a cause which is close to the hearts of so many and we’re really proud to be able to help the Rempstone Fundraising Committee in raising a great total for the centre.
“It was great to get the local community involved in the fundraising efforts,
Fairfield Preparatory School Tree-Ted To Tallest In East Midlands Fairfield Preparatory School has kicked off its festive celebrations by switching on the lights on the tallest Christmas tree in the East Midlands. It took two men 14 hours to decorate the redwood tree, which, at 100ft, is taller than the tree in London’s Trafalgar Square and as high as three double decker buses. Headteacher, Mr Andrew Earnshaw, addressed staff and pupils before the youngest student in Reception, pushed the plunger that switched on the 900 lights attached to 250 metres of cable. Mr Earnshaw said: “We have had a great afternoon to start our Christmas festivities, the tree looks so impressive. Our pupils have been busy calculating its height and it looks fantastic! Our lit-up tree can be seen for miles and we hope our local community will enjoy it as much as we do.”
we volunteered at the Beer and Curry Evening held in Rempstone and hosted a charity concert at Fairfield Preparatory School. Both of these
events had a superb attendance and we were delighted with the response.” The charity concert featured performances by the Cottesmore
Military Wives Choir; musical comedy duo Smith and Sergeant; and
Luke Wigman, an ambassador for the DNRC injured while serving in Afghanistan, who spoke about the importance of rehabilitation for injured service personnel.
Richard Beeby, Chairman of the Rempstone Fundraising Committee,
said: “We are very grateful for the help from Loughborough Endowed Schools for providing a location and catering for the concert earlier in
the year and for presenting us with this cheque today. I would especially like to thank Loughborough Endowed Schools and the Rempstone Committee for all of their hard work and fundraising efforts.”

How Can Loughborough Market Be Improved? Loughborough’s town centre shops (who are represented by the Business Improvement District – known as the BID, and locally as ‘Love Loughborough’), working with the Borough, has commissioned a study on how we can improve the market. A number of innovative ideas are being considered to help shape the future of Loughborough market. An independent review has put forward several ideas to help the market to continue to flourish after being crowned Best Large Outdoor Market in Britain in January 2017. Ideas include:
• Make the market easier to access by developing an improved layout
• Expand the existing market
into Cattle Market, Devonshire Square and Market Street to create more space for traders
• Create an entertainment area
to attract new customers to the market
• Create a street food quarter to include outside seating for al fresco dining
• Extend the closing time of the market on occasion past 4pm
The review also considers how the ideas could benefit the town centre, by increasing footfall to surrounding businesses and improving the customer experience of not just the market, but the town centre as a whole. We’re really proud of Loughborough market. This year it was crowned the Best Large Outdoor Market in Britain and it is popular with many residents. However it’s important to ensure that we continue to invest in the market and the town centre so that it continues to flourish in the future. The continued growth of supermarkets and an increase in online shopping has put pressure on retail markets
all over the country, including Loughborough. The review has looked at successful markets such as London’s Spitalfields to see how contemporary ideas can improve what is already an excellent market, to make sure it’s successful for years to come. We have been talking to traders and town centre businesses to help us develop the market and we will continue to work together to decide which ideas will be implemented. The purpose of the review is to develop a vision for Loughborough retail market for the next five-10 years. The review also looks at the impact of the market on the town centre and its retailers. If you would like to see the proposals, or respond with your own ideas, take a look at the Borough’s website: www.charnwood.gov.uk Loughborough’s Panto Receives Rave Reviews Again The award of Loughborough’s panto contract every few years, brings out the worst puns from Cabinet members – but also allows us to make sure that we build on the panto’s reputation in the town. For the third year in a row, this year’s panto has received a 5 star review from ‘The Stage’ – considered to be the showbusiness bible. We may hold the record for getting a clean-sweep of the reviews yet again, but demonstrates just how good the cast, and the production company behind the panto – Little Wolf – are at creating a brilliant performance year after year. Last year I was a panto ‘victim’, dragged on to the stage by the panto dames, the butt of their appalling jokes for the whole evening – and I loved every minute. Brilliant entertainment, and I’m proud that it’s a Loughborough tradition. If you haven’t got tickets yet – buy them soon!
Nicky Morgan
It was wonderful to see so many thousands of people at the Loughborough Christmas lights switch-on. The atmosphere was brilliant and it was a treat to meet so many of the Town Hall pantomime cast. I hear this year’s performance is spectacular. There is a fantastic programme of Christmas activities in the town centre – helped by free parking in many of our car parks on the Sundays in December. Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to get Loughborough in the festive spirit. There were also many excellent trees at the Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints Church in Loughborough. I’d like to thank the Charnwood College pupils and staff who helped make the very special decorations for my tree. If you still haven’t had a chance to see Father Christmas this year, and let him know what is on your wish list, then I can say that he’ll be leaving his reindeer behind and climbing on board both the special Great Central Railway Trains and also the Peter Le Marchant boats this month. I’m sure both will be magical experiences. I had my chance to meet Father Christmas at the Thorpe Acre church coffee morning in early December. I know there will have been many other Christmas fairs and events going on across our
town. Thank you to everyone who works so hard to organise the raffles and tombolas, the stalls and the refreshments. Such events really do make our communities extra special. Congratulations to Baxtergate business, Knotty Knits & Kreative Krafts who won the Loughborough Chamber of Trade & Commerce Small Business Saturday Christmas shop window competition. The judges had a tough time deciding on the finalists. The eventual winners knitted or crocheted all of their shop window display! I was very pleased to welcome the Skills Minister, Anne Milton MP, to meet apprentices, employers and staff at Loughborough College. I want to offer my congratulations to the founder of the Exaireo Trust, Dettie Wallington, who was awarded a Points of Light Award from the Prime Minister recently in recognition of her exceptional community work in our town over many years. 2017 has been a difficult year for many reasons so seeing Dettie’s news is just brilliant. Many congratulations Dettie – we are very proud of you! Finally, I hope that you, your family and loved ones have a very Happy Christmas and my very best wishes to for a peaceful and successful 2018.
The Landscape Of Charnwood Forest And Its Environs; Geology And Topography Talk by Alan Briggs Monday 22nd January 2018 Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall at 7.30pm You may wonder as you walk, or drive, around Charnwood Forest what really makes up our wonderful landscape. Alan Briggs, our speaker this evening, was recently asked by the Charnwood Roots Project to provide a summary of the geology and landscape of each parish in the area. So his talk has grown out of that project. He will begin with the volcanic origins of Charnwood on the other side of the globe some 500 million years ago with its rare fossils and cover its subsequent journey through to the ice age and present day landscape. Alan Briggs has a joint degree in Geology and Archaeology from Leicester University as a mature student. He has a wealth of knowledge about each parish following his involvement with the Charnwood Roots Project. FUTURE TALKS Monday 19th February. Gone with the Wind; the lost Leicestershire Windmills, talk by Mark Temple, Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall, 7.30pm. At one time every family's diet included bread which relied on a constant supply of fresh flour. So virtually every village had a mill of some sort, a watermill if there was a suitable stream, or if not, a windmill placed on an elevated position where its sails could catch the wind. At their peak in 1835 there were 152 mills in Leicestershire, and many locally (Woodhouse Eaves, Mountsorrel, Markfield, etc). Mark has tried to gather together all the photographic images that have survived and has made a collection of milling stories. He knows of the existence of many mills but their images have been lost.
