Pre Christmas Break In Prompts Extraordinary Generosity Great Central Railway Doubles Donations Of Gifts To Local Good Causes Christmas was saved for hundreds of Leicestershire children by generous well wishers following a callous break in. Thieves stole hundreds of gifts from the Great Central Railway in early November last year. They were destined for children in Leicester Royal Infirmary and Rainbows Hospice. When news of the theft made headlines, the railway began to receive replacement presents from all over the country. Michael Stokes, marketing manager for the Great Central Railway said, “This year as we prepared for our Santa Special trains, we put presents aside for local charities. The theft was devastating but what happened next was extraordinary. Generous well wishers from Leicestershire and across the country sent us replacement gifts. In the end we received more than seven hundred, twice the number stolen.” Gifts came from companies, clubs and private individuals including one fourteen year old girl. More than one thousand pounds was also received.

“People’s generosity has meant our donation has now gone further than we had ever hoped,” continued Michael. “Toys and games were sent to The Leicester Royal Infirmary and Rainbows Hospice as planned but also to Glenfield Hospital, Steps (a mobility charity in Leicestershire), Cash 4 Kids, Homestart and Charnwood Toy Appeal. While clearly no one would want to experience a break in, what happened afterwards really restores your faith in humanity. We’d like to thank everyone for helping us spread Christmas joy.”

LOUGHBOROUGH GRAMMAR SCHOOL SCOOPS MARKETING CAMPAIGN OF THE YEAR An innovative marketing campaign, which involved following a pupil on their seven-year journey at Loughborough Grammar School, has been recognised at the prestigious TES Independent School Awards 2018. Designed to give parents an insight into life at Loughborough Grammar School, part of Loughborough Endowed Schools Foundation, Affixxius Films and the marketing team created a four-minute film called Tom’s Journey. In the film, Tom discusses his hopes, aspirations and experiences in a series of interviews. Work on the project began when Tom was just 11-years-old and finished when he left the school at the age of 18, having joined the RAF with the goal of becoming an officer. At the glittering awards ceremony, held at Grosvenor House Hotel in London, judges praised the ‘bravery’ of the film, adding that it is ‘an inspirational, forward-looking and brave campaign which resonates with parents of children at every stage in their school career’. Speaking afterwards, Duncan Byrne, Headmaster at Loughborough Grammar School, said: “Marketing is, by its nature, a fast-paced activity, and there is often a pressing need to deliver near-immediate returns. However, we saw real value in a long-term project that would allow people to truly engage with one pupil at the school. It works on such a personal level, and I’d like to thank Affixxius and the marketing team for their creative concept and of course Tom, for all his many wonderful contributions to the project over the years.” He added that everyone involved in the filming had enjoyed the experience – and credited it with boosting applications. In 2016, work began on another film following three pupils throughout their time at Loughborough Grammar School, and staff hope that it will bring similar success.

Derek Robson And His Astrophotography Hobby Since retiring from work in 2015, former British Gas chemist and amateur astronomer Derek Robson (57) of Loughborough has been spending more time on his lifelong astrophotography hobby. He photographs astronomical objects, aurora (the northern lights), meteors, fireballs and close approaches of PHOTO 1 potentially hazardous asteroids Near Earth Object (NEO’s). In 2017, Derek celebrated winning a category of the International Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2017 – an international competition in which there were 3800 entries from photographers in 91 countries www.rmg. co.uk/discover/astronomy-photographer-gallery British Astronomical Association member Derek received a highly commended award at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, London for his image of 1.7 km-wide Near Earth Object 164121 (2003 YT1) on 2016 November 2. The image and award were very poignant for Derek who lost his father Alan in 2016, the year the image was taken. The image is on display at the Astronomy Centre in the Observatory until 23 July this year. It has been published online, PHOTO 2 in astronomy magazines such as The Sky at Night, and in books “Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year Collection 6 by the Royal Observatory Greenwich and The Sky at Night 2018 Yearbook. His video which showed the asteroid moving past the North Star won Photo of the Year by East Midlands Stargazers. Derek imaged the asteroid with a basic DSLR camera and a 300mm lens on a fixed tripod. Following guidance from Dr Chris Jackson and Victoria Penrice (both of Loughborough) and Paul Hyde (Basingstoke), Derek built a continuous monitoring meteor detection system that uses a Fun Cube Dongle and aerial. In 2017, Derek went to Serbia for the PHOTO 3 International Meteor Organisation’s 36th Conference. He also received an award from NEOShield-2 Project Team for his image of the 4-5 km Near Earth Object, asteroid Florence that made a close pass with the Earth on 2-3 September 2017. As a result of the European Commission’s call to “Access technologies and characterisation for Near Earth Objects (NEOs)” the NEOShield-2 project was formed under the lead of Airbus Defence and Space in Friedrichshafen, Germany as project coordinator. In total the NEOShield-2 Team is formed by 11 European partners including the UK. http://www.neoshield.eu/science-technology-asteroidimpact/ Derek became friends with asteroid astronomers Guy Wells of the Northolt Branch Observatories, London, and Daniel Bamberger in Germany, who became Derek’s mentors on asteroid science. Derek is grateful for their support. Due to recent pneumonia, Derek has needed to take a break from the freezing cold nights. But he hopes to be back at the eyepiece soon, ready to image the beauty of the night sky. Derek Robson BSc (Hons), C.Chem, MRSC, FRMS Photo 1. Iffy - By Johnny Opposite If you detect the truth when those about you Are locked in endless prisons of the mind If you can sense there's something more for you to do With eyes wide open on soil encumbered by the blind; If you know deep within your soul what's wrong Without need of confirmation from those not born so brave And forced to watch while all around rush headlong Through lives mapped out from the cradle to the grave If you forsee entire worlds turned upside down Where what needs to be known is never schooled Where fools compete for riches never found And common-sense is always over-ruled; If you can carry on when there seems no hope And yet never give in to such confusion When man's beliefs threaten your spirit not to cope Where "normal" life screams pure illusion If you can persevere And tell your truth no matter what the cost With all around devoid of ears to hear Or eyes to see what risks being lost; If your perception is way out there While Phantom Selves are trapped down here Like rabbits caught within the glare Yet stay the course and never stoop to fear If you can hold your nerve and stand your ground And not your spirit nor your power waver When your entire soul vibrates to a different sound And love not hate is yours to savour; If wisdom tells of no such thing as time and space And your heart detects that all is one Yet know within it's not a race And that your work is far from done; Then you're waking up from the sleep of ages To find you're far from being alone That you're in the company of great sages And which is more.....you'll be a giant among men my son!

County Councillor

Max Hunt

E: max.hunt@leics.gov.uk Desperate Times Call For Desperate Measures Taxing Times Council Tax will rise by nearly £100 this year, depending on your property, with a further rise on top of that next year. This has been caused by two factors. First the Government has a deliberate policy of reducing their grant to local services from about a third of the cost to zero – and have almost reached it. Second, there are increasing numbers of people who require complex care in the community. These are mostly elderly people as we live longer, so there seems no end in sight. Serious efforts have been made over the last ten years to find efficiencies, but many services, such as those of private care homes, are outside the council’s control. Many services are statutory, which means the council must provide them at all costs. It is said that desperate times call for desperate measures. It is time to think again about local government and make a determined attempt to make it more efficient and simple to navigate. We have two bureaucracies and two sets of paid councillors in each area of the county. Most County Councillors are also Borough Councillors. Residents and even councillors frequently find themselves passed from one council to another to solve minor problems like car parking, or hedge cutting, Four years ago, a top management company was commissioned by the County Council to estimate the cash we would save by merging councils. Merging services and departments is something management companies are asked to look every day. The savings, even then, amounted to £30million each year. I understand the need for democracy and accountability more than most. It can present a problem for larger councils. That’s why Loughborough also needs a low-cost Town Council, as Shepshed and parishes already have, which can represent their areas without the overheads of a second bureaucracy Our Town The proposal for another large student block, this time at the

southern end of the town centre, poses a lot of questions. Planning laws are now more relaxed than they have ever been and I fear our Borough planners will find it impossible to refuse. I do wonder, however, on what assumptions these property investments are based. Are they based on a growth in student numbers or are we seeing a move by students out of older properties into these lifestyle modern blocks? If the latter the older properties need to be brought back into family use. Reducing Road Casualties We’ve all said it at some time or other. “This is an accident waiting to happen!”. As councillors we can and do ask the police for speed checks and we work with residents to request the county council for road improvements or traffic calming. With money running out last year and a very large number of requests for such improvements, the county council are now having to strictly prioritise sites for attention. The yardstick for investigation is a junction or area where a cluster of seven or more collisions have occurred. One example is the A6/ Belton Road cross roads where, in the last few years, there have been 20 accidents (collisions is the term increasingly used), with one seriously injured and involving three pedestrians, four cyclists and two children. After an investigation, schemes are usually worked up to make the area safer. Since there is already a long list of these priority locations most of the available resources are already allocated. We talk a lot about the crisis in social care for our elderly, but the lack of resources in local government is also severely affecting our ability to fund road improvements. In other words, the county council are saying ‘accidents waiting to happen’ will have to wait while those that have already happened receive priority. Consultation On School Terms The County Council are putting forward three options (a) no change (b) match term dates in Leicester city or (c) same as now but with a later spring and autumn half term, by one week. It’s not urgent but If you would be seriously affected by either of these changes, please let me or your school know.

Member Of Parliament

Nicky Morgan

T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk As reported recently I and many other Loughborough residents were stunned to find that the County Council had been planning to allow cyclists to use the pedestrianised area in our town centre at all times of the day and night. Whilst there are, of course, many extremely considerate cyclists that isn’t always the case. I’d already been contacted by mainly elderly residents who are very alarmed by cyclists speeding along regardless of the mobility of the pedestrians around them. Some people have even been knocked over which makes them very nervous about visiting our town centre. I understand that part of the County Council’s thinking is to make the signage about who can and cannot access the pedestrianised area clearer. It seems, to me, that there are ways of doing this which respect the fact that the area is to be mainly used by pedestrians apart from limited access requirements. Thank you to all those who booked stalls and attended the Ageing Well event I recently held in town with Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland. We had a wide variety of stalls there offering advice on how to prevent falls, how to find the right care facility, how to support carers, relevant financial advice and planning and how to keep healthy as we get older. I was particularly delighted that we were able to raise funds for the campaign to get an Admiral Nurse in Leicestershire. Find out more here: www.nickymorgan.org/ news/virtual-ageing-well-event Life in Westminster continues to be very busy, particularly as Chair of the House of Commons

Treasury Select Committee. We hold two public evidence sessions a week including regular sessions with the Bank of England, Treasury Ministers and the Financial Conduct Authority. We are also holding inquiries into matters such as household finances, women in finance, student loans, cryptocurrencies, the UK’s economic relationship with the EU and small business funding. I also recently attended a debate in our second chamber, Westminster Hall, about myalgic encephalomyelitis (sometimes called chronic fatigue syndrome). This was a short debate specifically to look at something called the PACE trial which conducted research into treatment for ME. There is now significant criticism of this trial and the treatments it recommended. About 200,000 people in the UK suffer from ME which is an incredibly debilitating condition. The chances are that at least one, and probably more, Shepshed Eye readers will be sufferers or know someone who is. Because we only had time allocated for a short debate there were many MPs who couldn’t speak on behalf of their constituents and so we intend to ask for a long and more detailed debate. If you have any experiences you’d like me to know about before the debate please do get in touch.

Borough Councillor

Jonathan Morgan

E: cllr.jonathan.morgan@charnwood.gov.uk A Fitting Tribute To Our Fallen Work is set to start on a £280,000 refurbishment of Loughborough’s Carillon Tower, the town’s war memorial, built after the First World War to commemorate the men of Loughborough who gave their lives for their country - it carries the names of 686 men who died in both world wars and other conflicts. The tower will undergo a range of improvements including restoration work to improve the chiming of the bells at the top of the tower, and in the next few weeks scaffolding will be put around the tower to allow the work to take place. The Carillon is the town’s war memorial and it is only fitting that as the nation commemorates 100 years since the end of the First World War we are able to carry out this significant refurbishment. The Carillon is a grade two listed building. Construction was completed in 1923 and it is 150ft high. At the top are 47 bells, cast at John Taylor’s Bell Foundry in Loughborough. I am particularly pleased we are also refurbishing the clavier, the instrument that plays the John Taylor Foundry bells, so they will sound better than ever. The Carillon is incredibly important to the people of Loughborough and an important part of the local skyline. The refurbishment work will see the clavier fully restored with the striking elements of each bell refurbished by the foundry and there will also be some maintenance to the workings of the bells themselves. Repairs will be carried out on the stonework, copper roof, bronze memorial plaques, windows and doors. The Borough Council will complete the works in time for November 11 when the nation will mark 100 years since the end of the First World War. The Carillon will be played on November 11, Remembrance Day, and other events are being planned in town by the Council and across the borough.

More Bell News Loughborough Town Hall’s historic clock bell is chiming once again

after several years of silence. After becoming the Borough leader, I asked that the clock bell be

restored to bring the rings back to Loughborough’s high street. The

bell has rung in Loughborough for more than 130 years and I’m sure it’s return will be welcomed. The town hall itself has an

interesting past, having opened in

1855 as the town’s corn exchange, with a ballroom upstairs, and

only became the ‘Town Hall’ in 1888 after Loughborough was

granted a Charter of Incorporation which established an elected

council. The clock was designed and manufactured in 1879 and

installed in 1880 before the corn

exchange became the town hall. It measures 5ft 6inches and weighs almost a ton.

The clock and bell escaped

damage when there was a huge blaze at the town hall in 1972 although the hands are said to have stopped at the time

Charnwood Landscaping Hard Landscaping Specialist

of 11.35pm. It was removed

temporarily in November 1979 for some restoration work and it was put back up in 1980. The current bell was provided by Taylor’s

Bell Foundry in Loughborough and cast in 1929 and installed

on April 30, 1930. It is a recast

of an original bell, also provided by Taylor’s, which was cast in

1879 and weighs about 381kg (seven and a half of hundred

weight) and measures nearly 32 inches in diameter. It is tuned to

B sharp which is the same key as Loughborough Parish Church.

The bell hasn’t rung out for many years, and may require a little

TLC to start with, so, until it settles down, if you notice that it hasn’t

chimed the hour, please do pop

into the town hall, and let one of the staff know.
