So What Is Pilates?

That’s the question on many people’s lips when they first hear the name. Some people even say — it’s a bit like Yoga isn’t it?

New Absolute Beginners Course starting 6 June!

But, no, it’s not really like Yoga… Yoga and Pilates aim to do different things. Pilates is functional — it helps with mobility and flexibility, lets you improve the practical things you already do, and keeps you doing the things you want to do for longer.

How Do I Start Pilates? Simple — join one of Pilates classes in venues around your local area.

We may be aware of it from celebrity culture — Pilates is used by footballers to extend their careers. It’s used by Olympic athletes to fine tune and improve their performances. Professional golfers use Pilates to give them a stronger, more controlled swing. Film stars take Pilates classes to tone their bodies and keep themselves looking good for the camera.

And now you can even try it for yourself, for FREE! You can have a FREE Taster Class with us — the classes are listed below — so you can see for yourself what we offer and how great our classes are! You have nothing to lose. Spaces are limited, so get in touch quickly to arrange your FREE Taster Class. If you can get down to and and up from the ground unaided, and have no health issues, then Pilates — done correctly with us — can and will change your life.

So Who Is Jane Thomas?

Jane Thomas has been teaching Pilates in Loughborough now for 18 years — being one of the first Pilates Coaches in the East Midlands, teaching matwork group Pilates classes in Loughborough and many of the surrounding villages since before the year 2000. Since then, Jane Thomas Pilates is now a whole team of eight Pilates Coaches qualified to the highest national and international standards, all teaching Pilates according to Jane’s philosophy, and all wanting to show you how Pilates can benefit you.

Absolute Beginners Courses for Absolute Beginners

Ideal if you have never done Pilates before and feel you need a more personal guidance — we also have occasionall Absolute Beginners Courses which start off at the absolute basics of Pilates and build up the point you can join a regular class. There’s a lot of advantages:

Absolute Beginners classes are small (maximum of 10), so your Coach can work with you more closely. An Absolute Beginners Course is 6 week long, and at its completion you will be able to move into any of our existing clsses going forward

With our Absolute Beginners Courses you get a 52 page full-colour book of all the exercises you will cover in your weekly class

Classes in and around Loughborough Take a FREE Taster Class with us! Spaces available:

Summer Swift Nests The Leicestershire & Rutland Swift project partnership is asking people to tell them where Swifts are nesting. The Swift has a particular link to people as it breeds in our buildings and hunts insects over our towns and cities and, during the summer we all see them every day. Yet it is a bird in decline, with numbers down 51% since 1995. One of the reasons for this is the loss of breeding sites as people have improved their properties by closing access to eaves where Swifts have traditionally nested. New buildings rarely allow space for the birds. However, doing so is relatively easy, as nest 'bricks' can be incorporated into new buildings and nest boxes can be fitted onto existing buildings. The purpose behind finding out exactly where Swifts are currently nesting is that Swifts are colonial nesters and will readily take to bricks or boxes in such areas. This gives the information needed to ask planners and builders to install Swift bricks when building close to existing colonies. Swifts are extremely faithful to nest sites re-occupying the same nest site for many years. Peter Williams from Leicestershire & Rutland Ornithological Society said "An English summer would be a silent one without the screaming parties of Swifts flying over our houses. They are remarkable birds that

only ever land to nest, the rest of their lives, including sleeping, is spent on the wing. Swifts have built up a wonderfully close relationship to man and we owe it to them to ensure that they have nesting places for the future. They only need nest sites and in return, for the 12 weeks they are with us, eat prodigious quantities of flies, gnats and midges and provide wonderful demonstrations of aerial mastery and speed every day of the summer. They are probably the cleanest birds ever and sites need no cleaning, they are also very quiet whilst at the nest. We would be very grateful to anyone who can find the time to let us know where Swifts are nesting this summer." All we need to know is if people see: • Swifts flying low over rooftops and then dipping down towards a building and 'disappearing', it is likely they have entered a nest; or • Swifts flying low in groups 'screaming' which indicates that there are nests nearby. Reports can be submitted at www.naturespot.org.uk/ swifts or at landrswifts@gmail.com Data submitted in this way will only be used to establish a general location for Swift colonies so that alert maps can be prepared.

Wildlife Weekend Celebrates All Things Wild At Bradgate Park Loughborough Naturalists’ Club and Leicestershire and Rutland Ornithological Society are joining forces with the Bradgate Park Trust to celebrate the rich wildlife of Bradgate Park and Leicestershire. This free family-friendly event takes place on the meadows by the Deer Barn Tearooms and Visitor Centre the weekend of Saturday June 16th and Sunday June 17th. Between 10:00am - 4:00pm there will be a wealth of activities, information and displays about wildlife, nature, the environment and the great outdoors. Natural history and conservation groups from across the County will be joining the day, with stalls raising awareness of the work they do. This year, thanks to support from the Heritage Lottery Fund will be bigger than ever with two marquees and a photo and artwork exhibition in the Meeting Room above the Park’s Visitor Centre. The weekend will also be celebrating creative inspiration that the nationally important landscape and wildlife of Bradgate Park provides with poetry readings and photography walks. Throughout the two days will be many other varied attractions and opportunities for everyone of all ages to join in with and explore the wonders of the natural heritage of the area. Local experts will be running activities for children and adults alike, with guided walks exploring wild flowers, birds, dragonflies, butterflies and moths. On the evening of Saturday 16th at 9.30pm there is also a bat walk, meeting at the Newtown Linford gates. This will cover 2.5km and lasts approximately 90 minutes. Participants need to bring a torch and stout footwear. Places on this walk are £5 a place. Orchestra Concert Ticks All The Popularity Boxes! The Loughborough Orchestra’s June concert promises to be a popular occasion with some all-time favourite classics making up the programme. Well-known local musician, Jeremy Kimber, is to be the soloist in one of the best loved piano pieces, as he plays Rachmaninov’s second Piano Concerto. This lovely piece is a favourite with so many audiences. But the treats don’t stop there! Jeremy Kimber swaps places to play the organ for the Saint-Saëns Symphony no. 3, (often referred to as the Organ Symphony). The Piano also features in the piece with talented wife and husband team, Nina and Ed de Salis Young, also members of the Orchestra. The last movement of the Symphony is the most widely heard part of the Symphony but the earlier themes and textures are also masterfully crafted. Jeremy’s career has taken him to many far flung countries to perform and conduct. He now has a busy and varied schedule of teaching piano at Nottingham University, accompanying, performing in chamber music and examining for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music awards, including international diplomas. The concert is on Saturday June 16th at Emmanuel Church, Forest Rd. Further details are on the Orchestra website www. loughboroughorchestra.org.uk

Exhibition "Loughborough's Three Railways The Steam Years" The Loughborough Library Local Studies Volunteers Group is planning an exhibition/display regarding the above. The two-month display is planned from 7th of June till the end of July 2018 in the Public Library in Granby Street, Loughborough. The exhibition/display will be about the Charnwood Forest, Great Central and Midland Railways from building up, to closure of the Charnwood Forest and Great Central and in the later years the Midland Railways when Steam Locomotives were withdrawn. There will be several images of the railways from L.L.L.S.V. collection that have not been shown before, dating back to c1900, there will also be a collection of vintage Railway Posters (reprints) in the railway art section of the exhibition, also a collection of 00 gauge locomotives showing the evolution of the steam locomotives from the early 1900's up to the late 1940's that ran through Loughborough. The exhibition is free to visit during Library opening hours. The attached image is of a Steam Railmotor at Loughborough Derby Road Station on the Charnwood Forest Railway, these were built by the London and North Western Railway in c1907 and ran on the Charnwood Forest Railway for some years until replaced by conventional push and pull steam locomotive sets.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Westminster Law will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Plans To Revamp Southfields Park Residents are being asked for their views on plans to revamp Southfields Park in Loughborough. The work will be commissioned by Charnwood Borough Council and could include new fitness and play equipment, footpaths and better access to the park. It will cost around £210,000 and work is due to be completed by the Autumn. Councillor Jenny Bokor, lead member for Loughborough said: “I’m very pleased that we’re making these improvements to Southfields Park. Not only do we want to provide new equipment, we also want to make access to the park better. We also want to improve security as at the moment there’s limited lighting to the park in the evening. We’d also like residents’ views on these plans, so we can ensure that the park is a place for everyone to enjoy.” Southfields Park, which is off Leicester Road, is currently home to a skatepark and parkour park. Under the plans the skatepark could be extended. The entrances will be improved to make them wider, more attractive and more obvious to passers-by. The work will be funded by £90,000 from the Council and £122,403 in section 106 agreements, following development in the area. Residents are being asked for their views on how the park can be improved before the work begins. The consultation is available online at www.charnwood.gov.uk/ currentconsultations

There is something for everyone. Why not make a day of it and enjoy lunch out where you can choose between wood fired pizza, organic beef burgers, venison and bison, spicy samosas, vegetarian/vegan dishes, caribbean BBQ, Indian cuisine and Thai to name but a few. Jonathan Morgan

Remembering Charnwood’s Former Leader, David Slater I can’t start my latest blog without a mention for my predecessor as leader of Charnwood Borough Council, and my friend, Cllr David Slater. David’s sudden passing has been a shock to everyone involved with the council and in the community as well. He led the council for seven years and I was his deputy for more than two years before he decided to step down in November. David was an incredibly decent man who served the Council and the residents of Charnwood with absolute dedication. He was well-liked and respected by his colleagues, irrespective of party, and he will be missed by us all. A memorial service to celebrate his life takes place on Monday, June 4 at 1pm at St Bartholomew’s Church in Quorn. All who knew David are welcome to attend. Thumbs Up From The Local Government Association The Council has recently received a positive report on its performance, and its potential, following a visit by several senior officers and councillors from other authorities. This Peer Challenge, co-ordinated by the Local Government Association, found the Council is serving residents well and has much to be proud of. Don’t take just my word for it, please read the full report on the Council’s website. It also says we have the right building blocks in place to achieve more in the future. It was an interesting exercise and one I think will help build a stronger organisation. One of the many interesting points was about the Council’s potential to play a more prominent role on a regional level. It’s worth remembering that Charnwood is one of the largest borough councils in the country. In fact, the population in Charnwood is larger than in some unitary

authorities which provide all services to their residents. As local government continues to change and adapt we will be taking the advice of the LGA, which ties in with our own ambitions, and seeing how Charnwood can help lead not just the borough, but the region forward. Loughborough Councillors Get Their Own Forum As a final nod to the LGA report it does also mention a need to keep a local focus and perhaps it is fitting that in June we will have the first meeting of the Loughborough Area Committee. This is a committee made up of all Loughborough borough councillors. It will meet to discuss issues specific to Loughborough, giving the town the focus it deserves so we can best help residents and businesses. This provides an effective forum for the town’s councillors, without the expense to taxpayers of setting up an additional tier of local government, which would be less effective than the current set up and create more bureaucracy. The Loughborough Area Committee has the chance to play a role in shaping the town’s future and I wish it well. Recognising Charnwood’s Places And People Finally, we’re very close to launching our Charnwood Heritage Plaques Scheme to celebrate people, places and events in the borough. We will be installing plaques in different locations around the borough to mark an interesting piece of our local heritage. We’ve formed a committee involving councillors, officers and community representatives and in the longer term will ask for nominations. We’re proud of our heritage in Charnwood and we hope the plaques will help bring it to life for future generations.

Nicky Morgan

Have you heard about the Breathe Easy group who meet at Gorse Covert centre on the third Thursday each month between 2.15 and 4.15pm? They offer help and support to anyone affected by a lung problem and are the official local support group for the British Lung Foundation. They also run suitable exercise classes for those looking to build up their fitness. I was very pleased to speak to the group recently and received a warm welcome. On Saturday June 9th Picnic in the Park (at Queen’s Park in the centre of Loughborough) takes place between 11am and 4pm This is always a great event, particularly if the sun is shining, and no doubt Queen’s Park will be looking spectacular. During the event the Loughborough Local Studies Volunteers are holding a re-creation of the 1929 General Election, which was the first UK general election when all men and women could vote on an equal basis. On Friday 1st June I will be holding a joint event with our local Job Centre Plus. Held at Charnwood Council’s offices this event will brief employers on two issues. The first is the assistance that is available to help employers support any employees with disabilities. Second, as the universal credit benefit is rolled out to the Charnwood area for new claimants from July, employers will be able to get advice on how this may impact on their employees. For more details on

how to attend please contact my office. Congratulations to the Loughborough Wellbeing Café Project for being a People’s Lottery winner. And a huge thank you to everyone across Loughborough and Charnwood who supported them. With over 2000 votes secured their success would not have been possible without lots of local support. It was a treat to visit the new 3M building on Charnwood Campus recently and great to see everyone in their new surroundings. I am looking forward to attending this year’s 3M Young Innovators Challenge awards evening. I understand that this year there have been more (and more innovative) entries than ever before. Finally I was pleased to chair the recent Love Loughborough landlords and agents meeting. This annual event enables town landlords and agents to sit down with me, members of the council and, most importantly, those in charge of our business improvement district and discuss issues of mutual interests. The retail environment is tough at the moment and we all want to see Loughborough as a vibrant, thriving town centre. In fact our shop vacancy rate is significantly below the national average and new businesses are making enquiries about opening to join those who have been around longer – but they all need our continuing support!

County Councillor

Max Hunt

E: max.hunt@leics.gov.uk Our Hidden County Council Last month I suggested that many people believe that buses are run by the Council. They have, of course, been commercial and independent organisations for many years. The County Council now has to withdraw subsidies from some uncommercial routes. So the County Council don’t do some of the things we think they do actually do things most people think they don’t! And this includes the most important things they do – Right now the Council is taking a lead in improving care for people diagnosed with dementia. This comes under their much discussed role of Social Care. To put this in perspective it’s estimated that nearly 10,000 people are living with dementia in Leicestershire alone. This can start early but most of these people are over the age of 65 as you may imagine. In fact, an astonishing figure of 7% - over one in 20 - of older people are living with dementia. Five Aims For Leicestershire We’ve all heard of Alzheimer’s disease. This is the main form of dementia and named after a German neurologist at the beginning of the last century. His diagnosis proves important to managing the illness and living well through the stages. This is how Leicestershire’s caring and treatment strategy sets out their approach: They call it the “Well Pathway for Dementia” and it has five key aims: • Preventing well: the risk of people developing dementia is minimised. Taking exercise and being mentally active are said to be important • Diagnosing well: timely, accurate diagnosis, care plan, and review within the first year. Only three quarters of Leicestershire people thought to have dementia are actually diagnosed, so that’s important. • Supporting well: access to safe, high quality health and social care for people with dementia and their carers. This is a crucial role for the Leicestershire County Social Care team and partners. • Living well: many people with dementia can live normally in safe and accepting communities. We can all play a role here by learning how to be a dementia friend. • Dying well: As we all wish, people living with dementia should die with dignity in the place of their choosing. We need to give this much greater emphasis.

So What Can We Do? These five steps require strong links between the social care, GPs, memory clinics, support services, and social care. My task as a County Councillor is to ensure this happens. I also support the advice from Dementia UK for specialist dementia nurses, called Admiral Nurses, who work alongside the family of the person with dementia to offer the clinical knowledge, emotional support and practical advice that can help them face dementia with more confidence. They can be seen for dementia what Macmillan Nurses are for cancer. Apparently the founder was fond of sailing! You can donate to Dementia UK directly or through the local Co-op which is championing the charity at the moment. The County Council is ready to listen to any further ideas and experiences. This would be particularly important if you are or have been a carer for a family member with dementia. If so, please go to: www.leicestershire. gov.uk/have-your-say/currentconsultations where you will find details. Helping And Sharing Lives A particular scheme to help those with dementia, in this case supported by the Leicestershire Police, is the Herbert Protocol. This encourages family, friends and carers to put together useful information which can then be used if a person with dementia goes missing. It contains vital information such as medication required, mobile numbers and places previously visited. This combines with a Lions charity scheme which is being rolled out in the county. Another service that Leicestershire County Council supports is Shared Lives and it’s Share Lives Week between 15 and 24 June. So you may hear more about it in the press. The scheme links people who are able to help those less able to live more independent lives. Examples are those with dementia or learning difficulties. If you are interested look for Shared Lives on the County Council website or visit www.sharedlivesplus.org.uk --------------------------------------------------Regarding last months article "Protecting Our Pedestrian Area" the paragraph was solely quoted from the minutes at the County Council Meeting on Wednesday 21st March 2018 at 2.00pm which can be viewed via this link: http://politics.leics.gov.uk/ ieListDocuments.aspx?MId=5106 Max Hunt is happy to answer any concerns anyone may have regarding this, directly to his email as shown above or in person.

Toilet Twinning For the International project the Inner Wheel Club of Shepshed supported toilet twinning which helps to flush away poverty. Around a third of the worlds population have to use fields, streams, rivers, railway lines, as they don’t have a loo. By twinning a toilet you can help a single household or a school block to enable people living in poor communities to have clean water, a basic toilet, and to learn about hygiene. The ladies of the Shepshed Club raised enough money to twin 3 toilets, 1 in Nepal, in Myanmar and 1 in Kasongo in the Democratic republic of Congo and these have been twinned with toilets at Loughborough Baptist Church.

Plastic’s Not Fantastic Campaign Group 38 Degrees Loughborough are asking local businesses to reduce their plastic waste. The campaign idea came after watching David Attenborough’s ‘Blue Planet’ series, which demonstrated the appalling impact that discarded plastics have on our oceans. Food and drink outlets are being asked to sign up to a ‘Plastics Pledge’, and commit to offering customers bringing their own reusable cups a discount, refilling reusable water bottles with tap water for free, and to stop using plastic straws. Launched at a screening of ‘Demain’ (a film about climate change activism, organised by Transitions Loughborough on Friday 27th April) this was followed up with discussions with local people in the Market on Saturday 28th April. Speaking on behalf of 38 Degrees Loughborough, Emma Ward said: “The steps we are asking businesses to take are small but impactful. They signify a willingness to take positive action to protect our planet. Locals who are trying to reduce their own plastics use will still be able to continue to enjoy the towns’ cafes, restaurants and bars. The campaign is endorsed by Transitions Loughborough, People & Planet, and also Love Loughborough. Lez Cope-Newman, Chair of the Love Loughborough BID said: “Love Loughborough are currently looking at campaigns and initiatives to help reduce the use of plastics within Loughborough town centre, both from businesses and consumers. Love Loughborough are delighted to support 38 Degrees on their campaign to encourage our local cafes, bars and restaurants to sign up to the Plastics Pledge and we thought a great way to do this could be to include a 'virtual' sticker on their business listing on the Love Loughborough Business Directory. We will also be looking to see if we can include this on the Loyalty App for each participating business.” Participating businesses will also receive a certificate to display on their premises. If your business would like to take the Plastics Pledge, or you would like more info, please contact: 38degreeslboro@gmail.com
