LOCAL NEWS

UPDATE FROM GURU SINGH Thanks to Shepshed Eye, news of my challenge is getting to be known. I have had wonderful support from Shepshedians both in the form of encouragement and donations. I am also pleased that I have many people following my blog “Singh of the Mountains” on www. gsingh1015.wordpress.com and hopefully getting the message of health, cancer prevention, exercise and weight loss, and getting inspired! This is a weekly blog. Since the last update I had a wonderful 70 mile ride in Surrey Hills, despite two punctures. The group ride with fellow riders also doing Hope’s Italian Challenge was a bit of a disaster due to mechanical problems but since then on Sunday 22 March I had a fantastic 63 mile ride in The Cotswolds. It was a tough hilly ride involving over 3,300 ft of climbing. Next one along is another group ride and this time it is 70 miles, starting in our own backyard Charnwood Forest and heading towards Bosworth Battlefield. This one should be a pacy one and then towards the end of April is another hilly ride - about 75 miles in Rutland.

SHEPSHED WI The ladies of Shepshed WI met for their March meeting when it was announced that as it is 100 years this year since the WI was formed there will be a special Royal Garden Party in June at Buckingham Palace when one member from each institute in the country will be invited to attend but no decision was made as to which Shepshed member would be going. It was also announced that Shepshed WI would be having a stall at the Lions Fun Day in August and also a cake stall in the market on 12th June. The guest speaker for the evening was Liz Credgington from the charity ‘Wish Upon A Star’ which has been going now for 25 years. She told members how she became involved and said they make wishes come true for children aged 2 to 16 who have

So far I have lost 13 pounds but still have another 15 to go. My training is on track and I am beginning to get that “bring it on” feeling. The charity Hope Against Cancer is a aiming to raise £150,000 in total from this challenge and Shepshed’s contribution will help it to continue to provide funds for vital cancer research projects in University Hospitals of Leicester. More information on www.hfcr.org In addition to my giving page uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ team/Hopesitalianjob I now have sponsorship forms at Dilip’s in Market Place, Hall Croft Opticians, Bloomin’ Marvellous Florists on Charnwood Road, News Shop in Field Street, Ryatt’s Optometrist in Bull Ring and Charnwood Pharmacy on Charnwood Road, and The Black Swan.

life threatening illness. Some of the things are big like visiting Disney World in America and others are small like providing play equipment – one child wanted a Micky Mouse Bed which was easy to provide. Their big event of the year is when they take lots of children on a day trip to see Father Christmas in Lapland. She said it is a very long day and the journey out is full of noise and excitement but the return one is the complete opposite because everyone is asleep. Members were very impressed with the stories and agreed the charity was so worthwhile. The next meeting will be on 2nd April when there will be a talk on the Street Pastors. This will be held at Christchurch Methodist Church in Field Street, Shepshed, at 7.30 pm and visitors will be most welcome.

SHEPSHED RAMBLERS

Shepshed Ramblers fourth walk of 2015 is ‘A Stretch Through Stanton’. The group will meet in Shepshed Market Place at 09.25 on 19 April for a prompt 09.30 departure, returning between 2.00 and 3.00pm. Walkers carry a coffee break and packed lunch. If anyone requires further information, please contact Margaret on 01509 600510 or Bernie on 01509 828328. A warm welcome to all is guaranteed.

• 500g / 1lb 2oz Strong white bread flour • 1¼ teaspoon salt • 1½ teaspoon bread yeast • 2 teaspoon sugar • 300ml / 10fl oz water NOTE: A bread tin is good but the dough can simply be placed on a baking tray.

COOKING METHOD

Preheat the oven to 230°C / 450°F. Put the flour, yeast, sugar and salt in a largish bowl and mix all the ingredients together well. Slowly add the water to the mixture and blend it in. When all the water is added, continue mixing with your hands for 5 minutes more. Place the dough on a floured surface. Knead the dough for 10 more minutes until it becomes stretchy and elastic (To knead dough, place it on a floured surface, flatten it out. Fold it in

half towards you then flatten it again with the palms of your hand. Repeat) Separate some of the dough and make three 10cm (4in) rolls from the dough. Fit the rest of the dough into the oiled bread tin or on an oiled baking tray. Plait the three rolls of dough and pinch the end of the plait together to hold them. Cover the dough with a wet tea towel (to stop the surface drying) and place it somewhere at room temperature away from draughts. Two hours later the dough will have doubled in size and be ready for baking. Put the dough in middle of the oven for 35 minutes. Remove from the oven when the top is a light golden brown.

EXCITING TIMES AT SHEPSHED TBC For the first time in it's history, Shepshed Town Bowls Club have elected a lady member as their Club President. Traditionally this role has been filled by the Men's President but this year Carol Burton will combine the two roles of Ladies' President and Club President. The club recently received a grant from Sport England for £50,000 towards the Club Improvement Scheme which will see the addition of a new kitchen, disabled toilet facilities and a second changing room to the existing building. The work is currently in progress and should be finished in time for the start of the new season in April.

SHEPSHED HISTORY SOCIETY Shepshed History Society had a very thought provoking and interesting talk given by Mrs Heidi Tivey on March 10th, entitled ‘Growing Up Under Hitler’ Heidi was born in the 1920’s when inflation was rife in Germany after the turmoil of the first world war and they were in very dire straits. So when Hitler in 1933 began to take control of the country and put it back on its feet, this iconic figure was an unsung hero. However it wasn’t until later that as we all know to our costs now that it all began to go sour when Hitler first began the Nazi party and things spiralled down into the appalling carnage that turned every ones lives into a living hell. And so Heidi

gave the society a very graphic account of her life as a young girl as she struggled to survive these atrocities and finally was able to break free when she married an English officer at the end of the war and came to England to a much happier life. The talk had the members mesmerised as they came to learn of what really happened all those years ago in war torn Germany and they were left seeing another side as to how innocent victims of war whether they were allies or enemy were made to suffer. The next talk for the society will be given by Chris Knight on April 14th and the subject will be ‘Auntie The War Is Over’ New Members are always welcome and we meet at the Glenmore Centre at 7.30p.m.

MOORS FARM DAY NURSERY On March 9th Moors Farm, a brand new children’s day nursery in Hathern was opened by the proprietor’s children - who enthusiastically cut the red ribbon! A former bed and breakfast, the building was subject to a lot of renovation work over the last few months and is now a fantastic 69-place early years provision for the community. Hathern is experiencing a lot of expansion at present and it is hoped that Moors Farm Day Nursery will compliment the excellent provisions already in the area whilst offering parents choice and availability. The nursery is owned by Robin Batten and Katey Lester and they own two other successful nurseries in Leicestershire. Robin Batten said, “ We were aware of the development happening in this area and knew that this would create an increasing demand for childcare. Quite by accident we found Moors Farm and we knew immediately that it could provide a wonderful setting for a nursery.” Co-owner, Katey Lester, added, “We have been lucky to find such an amazing building that

The nursery offers parents and their children an 18 bay car park, 2 outdoor play areas and a public footpath linking the nursery to the village. Safeguarding is the manager’s primary concern as Heidi Morris, Nursery Manager, explains, “Our priority is to protect the children and offer parents & carers peace of mind. At Moors Farm we have installed 36 CCTV cameras to monitor the setting. External gates and doors have key coded locks and we use a video entry system to control access to the building.” has so many lovely architectural features for the children to enjoy. Our settings offer a very neutral environment that is not distracting for the children and allows their amazing work to stand out. Moors Farm is a really soothing and homely space that uses natural resources to create wonderful play opportunities. We are really excited to be here and to be part of this dynamic community.” From the main road Moors Farm Day Nursery looks like a small dollhouse but this is deceiving. It is actually a large, bright and airy building with good sized rooms.

There has been a lot of interest from prospective parents/carers and the nursery team hope that the rooms will soon be bustling with busy children. Prospective parents/carers are welcome to view at any time without prior appointment or telephone Heidi on 01509 842968.

Technology extends to the children’s teaching too as the nursery uses software to record each child’s learning journey and this can then be accessed by the parent/carer who can add their own observations based on the child’s activities away from the nursery. Heidi said, “This is a great resource because it ensures that no area of the child’s learning and development goes un-noticed. More importantly, it involves parent/carers in their child’s learning which is so important. We really place great emphasis on developing a positive partnership with parents and this goes some way to achieving this.”

LOCAL NEWS

Article & Photographs By - Paul Taylor & Sarah Taylor Situated just 2 miles from East Midlands Airport, Donington Park is unique. Probably best known in recent years for music festivals and motor cycle racing, its’ car racing heritage lives on. Spring sees the start of Donington’s motor racing season, and we went along to the official launch of the 2015 MSA Dunlop British Touring Car Championship. Over the past couple of years many of you may have seen the cut-and-thrust close competition of the Touring Cars on ITV 4, but there is nothing to match seeing the cars in action and up-close, driven to the limit around the hilly and winding Donington Park circuit. Part of the appeal is seeing the cars we drive every day (such as VW, Audi, BMW, Toyota, Honda and Ford), battle it out on-track. OK, these particular cars are race prepared, but they look pretty much the same, but emblazoned with the names of well-known sponsors. One new manufacturer to grace the tracks this year is luxury brand Infiniti- it will be interesting to see how they fare against the likes of top-end marques Mercedes and BMW, and “budget” manufacturers Proton and MG.

» HEROES AND VILLAINS

» GETTING TRACKSIDE

Like any other sport it has heroes and villains- amongst them are defending champion Colin Turkington, Midlander and 2013 Champion Andrew Jordan, stalwart Jason Plato, and “Flash” Gordon Sedden. Whilst Colin, Andrew and Gordon are known for their smooth, clean style of driving, Jason is notorious for his relentless and sometimes hard-hitting antics. Amongst the 32 drivers signed up for the 2015 series are 5 previous champions, and no less than 7 “rookies” competing in Touring Cars for the first time. These include Nic Hamilton, brother of reigning F1 World Champion Lewis. He is the first disabled driver to drive in the series, but has got here through ability, after successful seasons in club formulas such as the Renault Clio Cup. At the press conference he told us that just 5 years ago he was restricted to a wheelchair, but now able to walk again he wants to inspire people to overcome all kinds of disabilityhe sees himself as the first motor sport para-olympian! Although he will line up in just 5 rounds this year, a full season of competition is planned for 2016.

After the press conference we ventured outside to see the cars unveiled one by one, as the press entourage moved down the pit lane to photograph the dazzling machinery. All 32 cars then moved to the track for a promotional photograph. An awesome roar filled the air as their engines burst into life for the obligatory few laps of the circuit, the cars following closely behind a 4x4 that had a film crew dangling precariously from the open tailgate! The sound was fantastic, guaranteed to set the spine tingling of anyone with just a passing interest in motoring or motorsport.

» THE TEAMS

This season, there are 3 motor racing constructor teams battling against 6 manufacturer backed outfits, and several smaller independent teams. With racing budgets running into hundreds of thousands of pounds it is important to get your car (and sponsor) noticed, so eye-catching paintwork is vital, adding to the racing spectacle.

OTHER DONINGTON ATTRACTIONS

The race-track events (which even include truck racing) are interspersed with other attractions, such as the previously mentioned music festivals, and regular Sunday markets. There is also Tom’s ever growing Grand Prix Exhibition of historic racing cars. Further details can be found on the website www.donington-park.co.uk and for Touring Cars www.btcc.net

A BRIEF HISTORY OF DONINGTON PARK

Donington Park started life as a motorsport venue in 1931. In 1971 it was purchased by local businessman Tom Wheatcroft, and it has played host to the British Motorcycle Grand Prix (1987), and the Formula 1 European Grand Prix (1993), with racing legends Barry Sheene and Ayrton Senna gracing the track. His investment programme continues, ensuring world-class standards are maintained.

» ENTHUSIASM

Later, the afternoon testing session was an opportunity to see the cars in action, hitting full speed along the straight, before bouncing over the curb as they found the tightest of lines around Redgate Curve. The growing enthusiasm for Touring Cars was confirmed by the hundreds of fans who had come along on a cold March afternoon to witness the birth of another season of racing. The Team BMR VW Passats driven by Plato and Turkington set the fastest lap times of the day, followed closely by second season racer Aiden Moffat in a Mercedes A Class. To prove the championship is unlikely to be dominated by one team or make of car, the 10th fastest lap was under a second slower than Jason’s quickest time. No processional races in Touring Car land! The 30-40,000 die-hard BTCC fans go racing in all weathers, but I hope the weather gods smile on Donington this year. Only 20 minutes’ drive from Coalville, it is a convenient and enjoyable way to spend a Sunday or complete weekend. Racing starts late March, with the Superbikes here Easter weekend, and the Touring Cars returning 18 and 19 April.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Shepshed & the surrounding area and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

THE ROTARY CLUB OF SHEPSHED

ROTARY HELPS SHEPSHED SCOUTS FIND THEIR WAY

PHOTO: left to right: A. Darby, H. Bird, J. Garratt, T. Hughes, E. Hughes, C. Flood, Scout Leader A. Skeoch, P. Thompson, D. Bowley

Shepshed Charnwood Rotary Club member Alan Darby managed to find his way to the 4th Shepshed Scout group without the need for navigational aids.

Normally they are dependent on borrowing these items but not anymore. Thanks to generous donations from Shepshed residents to the Rotary Club’s annual Santa float, each patrol is now the proud owner of its own compass.

The Scouts' mission is not so easy; they will soon be venturing out on a 3-hour overnight hike organised by the Loughborough Students Union Scout and Guide Club. To complete this adventure they were in desperate need of compasses, as they will be tested for various skills including navigation (without sat nav!).

The first test of the units will be on a training weekend staying in a 6m x 4m shed somewhere on a hill in the Peak district, and Scout leader Aidan Skeoch says that the items will certainly be put to good use. He thanked the Rotary Club for their donation and promised to report on the group's progress in the events.

ROTARY HELPS TO PROMOTE SCHOOL AUTHOR PROJECT I can use my imagination, I can read, I can write stories, I can communicate. These are powerful principles for anyone, but especially for young people. The ability to communicate effectively is one of the most sought after and useful tools in anyone's skill box. The Kegworth Primary School Author Project is one way that this can be encouraged in the young. Sue Hebden, Literacy Coordinator for the school, told President David Hayes (Shepshed Charnwood Rotary), that one of the main objectives was to provide learning and educational experience for the children at the school, it should also be fun. To this end Julie Ann Heath, a local author, has been asked to be involved. She will initially encourage the class to interact with her to create a story, thereby giving all the children a sense of ownership.

ACADEMY STUDENTS FIND THE "WRITE TRACK"

A talented group of students from the East Leake Academy found themselves on the "write track" when they became finalists in the Shepshed Charnwood Rotary Club's 16th Young Writers' Competition. Over 180 stories were entered giving the judges, Bill Watson and June Hutchinson, an even more difficult task than ever before. All the entries were outstanding, each offering an entertaining and sometimes moving insight into how young people interpret their world. The creativity and humour in the stories impressed the judges with their maturity and realism. A most "improved writer" award was introduced this year, with the Academy choosing Zoe Glasgow as the first to receive this accolade. Earlier in the year the club sponsored an author's workshop for Year 8 which proved to be very inspiring and which encouraged students to submit entries for the competition. President David Hayes thanked Sam Rolling (English teacher), the staff, judges and the acting Principle, Mr. P. Renshaw, for their involvement in this project. The workshop and competition are funded by the people in East Leake who donated to the Rotary Club's annual Santa float.

PHOTO: left to right: D. Hayes, S. Rolling, K. Needham, J. Bates, S. Finch, Z. Glasgow , J. Barney, P. Howes, P. Renshaw, B. Watson Mr Renshaw also commented on the high standards and was pleased that, in this digital age, the imagination, power and drive of the written word are still very much alive in our young people. He thanked the members of the Rotary Club, his staff and students for all their hard, but rewarding, work. The winners were:

Junior Section: First prize

Pippa Howes with "Truth or Dare"

Second prize

Joseph Barney with "Escape"

Third prize

Jacob Bates with "A Christmas in the Trenches"

Senior Section: First prize

Katie Needham with "Help"

Second prize

Stuart Finch with "The Tormentor"

Third prize Matthew Hogg with "The Football Star"

ROBERT’S FIFTY YEARS IN ROTARY PHOTO: Sue Hebden and Rotary President David Hayes From this they will be encouraged to write their own stories which will be collated into a story book. It is hoped that this will lead to other skills being developed, such as listening, learning, working in a team, interaction..... the list of benefits goes on. The Rotary Club is delighted to be involved in this initiative, and considers that it is a worthy home for part of the Santa float money so generously donated by the people of Kegworth.

On Monday 9 March Rotarian Robert Hall was joined by fellow members and friends to celebrate his 50 years in Rotary. Robert gave an interesting talk about the changes in Rotary over his time as a member and the different events that he has been to both here at home and overseas. He also talked about the great work that Rotary does and the fellowships that he has made and how they continue to this day. Robert was a very young Rotarian when he joined the Rotary club of Shepshed on 9 March 1965 and has served in many roles including secretary, Foundation chairman and President in 1972/3

and 1997/8. In honour of his achievement he was read a poem penned by our President Phil Marriott and presented with a certificate signed by Gary Huang President of Rotary International and a bottle of champagne to celebrate with.

INNER WHEEL CLUB OF SHEPSHED Macmillan Mammoth Quiz 2015 On Friday 27th February the Inner Wheel Club of Shepshed held their 7th Annual Macmillan Mammoth Quiz at Kegworth Village Hall. The Mammoth Quiz, organised by Oundle Macmillan Support Group, is simply the same quiz being held on the same day, at the same time, throughout the country. The generosity of those running the quizzes in aid of this worthy charity has seen just over £150,000 being raised between 2009 and 2014.

This has become a very successful annual event with 77 people attending our quiz this year raising £533.50 for Macmillan. A ploughman’s supper was enjoyed by all along with a raffle with a variety of prizes donated by several Inner Wheel members and quiz team members. Macmillan had 168 venues holding the quiz this year not only in this country but several overseas. They have heard back from 66 so far and the total stands to date at £30,550.31! We already have next year’s Quiz fully booked, which will be on Friday 26th February 2016. Very many thanks for all of your support.

THE SHEPSHED SHOW PLANS TO REACH NEW HEIGHTS The Shepshed Show committee had a difficult task ahead when they began planning for this year’s event on the 20th June at Shepshed High School. The bar has been set incredibly high when it comes to the Shows main attraction, following the exhilarating performance of Jason Smyth’s Quad Bike Stunt Show last year. Now in its third year, organisers have had to pull out all the stops to find something equally appealing, and are proud to announce that this year’s main attraction will see performances from one of the UK’s top motorcycle display teams, Broke FMX. The act is sponsored by Loughborough Car Dealer Farmer and Carlisle Toyota, of Belton Road, and the motorcycle duo will perform twice on the day. Elaine Stevenson, Vice Chair of the Show Committee said ‘we are thrilled to have secured another

new and exciting attraction. The support from our sponsors is phenomenal once again and this is demonstrated by the wonderful support from Farmer and Carlisle. Plans are coming along nicely, we have arranged the show for the same weekend in June as last year, hoping for a repeat of the wonderful weather’. Visitors can look forward to an array of entertainment and attractions including live acts and local performers, a wide range of food and drinks including a beer tent, donkey rides, bouncy castles and lots of activities for children, not to mention a wonderful selection of stall holders and the return of the popular craft/artists marquee. Anyone wishing to book a stall or enquire about sponsoring the event should contact the organisers via email shepshedshow@gmail.com or call 07955381124. Alternatively visit the website www.shepshedshow. org for more details.

his image entitled The Only Way To Travel’. Second place went to Sue Hutton, LRPS., third to Garry Rennocks, with Pete and Garry also receiving Highly Commended awards for other entries. The Club were hosts to this years annual imaging matching competition against the clubs from Coalville and Ashby, the venue being the church hall at Oaks-in-Charnwood. Judging was done by Colin Machin and Mandy Sherrington from the Sileby club and after the usual somewhat boisterous judging session it resulted in Ashby being the winners with 58 points against 56 from Shepshed and 39 from Coalville. The Club will be taking a break over the Easter period and meetings commence for the summer term on 13th.April, details available from the website at: www.shepshedcameraclub.co.uk

4th Shepshed Cubs have recently been collecting food for the Shepshed Foodbank as part of their Global Challenge Badge. Last night we were lucky enough to have Glennis Wilcox from the Foodbank come along to pick up all the food we have been collecting since the beginning of February and we would like to publicly thank her for coming along & all the work she does with the foodbank and to all the Cubs families for their help in supporting us in our endeavours.

QUESTION TIME FOR DISHLEY GRANGE PATIENTS An evening of Questions and Answers about issues of interest to patients of the Dishley Grange Medical Practice is planned for Thursday 23rd April at the Gorse Covert Community Centre, Loughborough starting at 7.00pm. The Patients’ Group at the Practice is drawing together a panel of experts, including representatives of West Leicestershire Clinical Commissioning Group and the Practice to address issues that are of interest and concern to patients, particularly in the light of further planned changes to primary healthcare. A presentation on “Managing Care closer to Home” will also be a feature of the evening”.

Peter Boultby, the Group’s Chair, has commented “this is a terrific opportunity for the Practice’s patients to hear at first hand from the practitioners about what is happening locally in the field of Primary Healthcare and to ask questions”. The event will form part of the Patients’ Group’s AGM and all patients of the Dishley Grange Medical Practice are welcome to attend the event. Further information about the meeting and the Group is available from the two surgeries (Maxwell Drive and Cross Street, Hathern) and on the Practice’s website. FOOTBALL CLUB SCORES NEW KIT THANKS TO THE NOTTINGHAM BUILDING SOCIETY

NETBALL TEAM SCORE FUNDRAISING GOAL

Shepshed Netball Amateur Players presented a cheque for £100 to Cancer Research representatives recently following a 10p per goal fundraiser.

The Shepshed branch of the Nottingham Building Society (The Nottingham) has achieved a great goal by sponsoring local football team Ingles FC and providing them with £250 to cover the cost of their training kit. Some of the players dropped into the branch this week to pick up the kit and meet Branch Manager Carl Ward.

Carl said “We have a long and rich history of helping out our local communities and it’s great that we are able to help out our local football club, Ingles FC. We wish them every success this season.” Ingles Football Club was established in 1972 and the team is currently third in the senior league - Everards Championship Division 1 - and are in a strong position to be promoted again this season.

SHEPSHED DYNAMO YOUTH & JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB

An increased number of lads at training sessions looks positive for next season.

The end of the season is among some of our teams but for others, there are still 7 games to go, so that means mid-week games. The weather has been kind recently with few postponements. The transfer deadline has well and truly passed so teams will have to finish the season with the current players. Season 2015 / 2016 is not far away and we are busy entering teams in the various Youth and junior leagues in Leicestershire.

Andrew Hammersley

in some way and the work they do is invaluable. I'd like to thank the ladies for their hard work and commitment - they are a great bunch!

Under 17’s have won 2 and lost 1 since the last publication. With only 12 registered players, it’s a real struggle to put a team out each week, but by sticking together and working hard, they can beat teams even starting with only 10 players. Under 15’s beat the top of their League last Sunday 1-0 and with their two remaining games against weaker opposition, with luck they should finish 4th in their League. Under 14’s have one game to play at the Dovecote on the 19th April 2015. Their League has been hampered by other teams playing non registered / over aged players. Dynamo always play it fair even if it means starting with 10.

The ladies from Shepshed Netball Amateur Players are pictured presenting their cheque to Ian Mackie and Cristina Walsh from the Cancer Research UK branch in Loughborough.

Under 12’s have finished their league campaign and stand proudly top of their league. Unfortunately 1 team can catch them and they need 6 points from their last possible 9 points. Under 11’s have 1 game to go and are looking forward to the summer football tournaments across the counties. Under 9’s and Under 8’s are training hard and also looking forward to the summer competitions. Under 7’s are moving outdoors after the Easter break and will look to play friendly games in and around Charnwood. The next major event is our annual 7 aside tournament on the 9th and 10th May. The Dovecote will delight in the sight of 70 young teams performing to their best abilities. Final details will be published next month. Most players will be out of registration during the next month, so all current players are welcome to resign and those Shepshed lads playing outside the Town, why not return to your home base. Current players, keep in touch with your Manager and anyone wanting to return or start with us, please contact Mick on 07801 691712.

WINDOW DRESSING

The Look Of Wood For Less

Our range of Expressions faux wood venetian blinds look like wood but are much more and here’s why! Stylish and contemporary, yet practical, with their unique wood grain finish they are the perfect option for any room in the house, especially kitchens and bathrooms as they are moisture resistant and also flame retardant, and so easy to keep clean.

Available in 3 slat widths, they come in a range of colours including sleek white and cream, rich wood tones, high gloss black and white, and even bang on trend smoky grey. For a designer finish we can add a co-ordinating tape. More affordable than wood blinds they are also a cost effective alternative for conservatories and bay windows, and much lighter too. Expressions come with matching valances, cords and pulls.

GARDENING

GROWING COLOURFUL ALPINES

T

he daylight hours are lengthening and the weather is improving, so when the sun shines I’m nipping out to the garden with every chance I get! I’m busy creating new flower beds and getting the veg plot ready for spring. If you’d like to try your hand at growing your own produce this year see below for details of my ‘Grow along with Bel’ project.

Viola ‘Columbine’

‘Newcroft Gardening Club’

One of the first splashes of colour to brighten up the garden centres and nurseries in spring is from Alpine plants. They are irresistible after the winter months and I always buy a dozen or so each year. Alpine plants don’t need to be confined to a rockery though; they are lovely in pots, troughs, baskets and borders too. Alpine plants originate from regions with good drainage and usually cold, dry winters, with high light levels. In order to grow them successfully in our gardens we need to emulate the conditions they thrive in naturally. Alpines will need a sunny spot and a free draining compost is essential to stop root and base rot during our wet winters. I make up a mix for pots of around one part John Innes no.2, one part horticultural grit & one part multi-purpose compost but some garden centres sell ready mixed alpine compost. Anywhere that’s sunny, freedraining and not smothered by other plants will suit Alpines, but

‘Grow along with Bel’

13

I like to grow them in pots so I can appreciate their diminutive stature. I can move the pot near to the house or onto the patio whilst they are in flower and then pop them out of the way in the Autumn-Winter. Shallow dish-like pots are best as they drain well and alpines only need a short rooting space.

My favourite Alpines Try a selection of these mixed together in a pot or plant them in a gravel garden or rockery: Aubretia – blue/pink/purple flowers in spring; Viola ‘Columbine’ – dappled blue/white petals; Lithodora – Striking azureblue flowers; Saxifraga – tight cushions topped with white/red/ pink blooms in spring; Armeria – aka Thrift with grassy cushions topped with pompoms throughout spring/summer; Sempervivum – aka House Leek green-bronze spiky rosettes; Campanula carpatica or similar with blue/purple/white bell flowers; Aquilegia alpina – small form with nodding blooms; Dianthus aka dwarf Pinks – highly scented repeat flowerers; Erodium – carpeting plant with white/pink blooms; Phlox subulata – carpets of blooms in early summer in pink/ white/blue/purple; Pulsitilla – furry foliage and feathered blooms in late spring.

surface, a water and then they will provide you with a lovely colourful display during Spring-Summer.

Newcroft Gardening Club I’ve had the pleasure of helping out with the Newcroft school Gardening Club recently, led by teacher Emily Gould, the group of budding student gardeners have been having fun learning how to cultivate soil, sow seeds and grow produce for use in the schools kitchen. It’s been lovely to help such a well behaved polite group of children and I hope they go on to grow their own produce at home too.

‘Grow along with Bel’ Ever wanted to have a go at growing your own veggies, fruit and flowers, but not sure where to start? Well over the next 6 months I’ll be posting advice on what & when to sow, grow and harvest & how to keep the weeds and pests at bay on my Facebook page. Like my page to keep up to date & get involved with ‘Grow along with Bel’ www.facebook.com/ belgriersondesign It’s been a busy start to the year and summer will soon be here so next month I’ll be looking at some of my favourite plant combinations for colourful patio pots.

Once planted give them a top dressing of horticultural grit on the

CHRISTIE CAT AND HER YUMMY CARROT MUFFINS Christie Cat decided to bake some yummy carrot muffins. The sun was shining and she could hear the birds singing through her open kitchen window.

Christie started to weigh out all the ingredients she needed and put them in to a large mixing bowl. Christie then went to the pantry to get the carrots but Oh NO! She hadn’t any left. She was very sad, Carrot muffins are her favourite and she was really looking forward to them.

Tel: 01509 504488 Shepshed based company

Just then Christie Cat heard Daniel Dog shouting “Hello” over the garden fence. “Lovely day Christie” He shouted. “I suppose so” replied Christie. “What’s wrong?” said Daniel. Christie told Daniel all about her plan to make carrot muffins and that she hadn’t any carrots left so would have to have plain muffins instead. “Don’t worry” said Daniel Dog, “I have lots of carrots growing in my garden, I shall go and dig some up for you.” Christie was so happy, with Daniels help she finished baking her carrot muffins and as a thank you she invited Daniel to stay and share the muffins. So Christie and Daniel sat in the garden eating homemade (and home grown) carrot muffins and drinking fresh lemonade. “Do you know what Daniel?” said Christie, “I think cakes taste better when shared with friends. I think you’re right!” said Daniel.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

START THINKING SMART With an estimated 35 million smartphones in the UK , and tablets increasingly replacing PCs and laptops, mobile communication devices are here to stay. However, the human eye wasn’t designed for these 21st century gadgets, so it’s important to use them in moderation. The tiny lettering on smartphone screens may cause eye strain without appropriate reading glasses, we can advise you about vision correction products and prescription strengths. Reading glasses are often recommended for people over the age of 40, and today’s varifocal lenses can also help you to navigate those closely-packed lines of text. Devices like the Kindle e-reader replicate the appearance of a traditional book to reduce eye fatigue, and they’re designed to be held at arm’s length – a useful tip for any mobile device. Never spend more than 20 minutes looking at a portable device without giving your eyes a minute to re-focus elsewhere, and zoom in (by pinching two fingers on the screen and pulling them apart) whenever it’s possible to do so. Handheld gadgets can shrink their text to fit the available space,

which can be impossible to read without pinching and zooming. Modern devices can increasingly be operated by voice control interfaces such as Apple’s Siri, which can reduce the amount of time spent looking at them. We’d also recommend adjusting the brightness to a comfortable level, while sunscreens and anti-glare covers can prevent headaches being caused by reflections or bright sunlight. This latter issue may also be overcome by wearing sunglasses. Mild eye strain caused by overuse of mobile devices can be reduced by using eye drops or trying to blink more frequently. Because people tend to stare intently at computer screens, they blink less than during other activities - this can accelerate the onset of dryness and fatigue.

“We’d also recommend turning down the brightness levels as much as possible, while sunscreens and antiglare covers can prevent headaches being caused by reflections or bright sunlight.” To combat this, eye drop lubricants are available to aid comfort. For more advice on this issue, please call into the practice. Any recurring headaches or blurred vision should immediately be reported to us so that we can examine your eyes and identify possible causes. Did you know? Love Your Feet!

Plantar Fasciitis “Foot Pain” Submitted by Sally Prytherch Hinds Feet Foot Care T: 07806786616 E: hindsfeetfootcare@gmail.com W: www.hindsfeetfootcare.co.uk Plantar fasciitis is characterised by heel pain, but can also affect the rest of the foot. The ligament like tissue running from the heel to the middle of the foot can become damaged resulting in thickening and inflammation, though often, there is no direct cause. Pain is most noticeable on getting out of bed in the morning with the sufferer having to ‘hobble’ across the room. It is made worse by wearing flat shoes with poor cushioning and little arch support or by any situation which puts extra strain on the feet. Carrying excess weight and walking barefoot on hard surfaces can exacerbate the condition. Plantar fasciitis is common in people with flat feet and those with high arches and affects more women than men, with one in ten people experiencing it during their lifetime. A combination of various strategies can help relieve symptoms including resting the foot wherever possible. Foot wear providing

USEFUL WEBSITES:

heel cushioning and arch support will aid comfort, as will heel pads or shoes with a 1cm heel which shortens the ligament by raising the heel. Anti-inflammatory medication or ice packs wrapped in a cloth and held against the foot for 10 to 15 minutes may help reduce inflammation. Calf stretching exercises which can also loosen a tightened Achilles tendon may reduce symptoms but must be done daily to be effective. Pilates is a good form of stretching exercise and a ‘Pilates band’ can assist with calf and foot exercises. Readymade or custom orthotic insoles can help support and realign the foot which can greatly relieve symptoms, and orthotic footwear with built in support is available. If simple measures are not effective a discussion with a GP or Podiatrist is advisable as in severe cases steroid injections or other treatments may be necessary. Exercises and further information can be found at www.nhs.uk.

LOFT STORAGE

SOLUTIONS Balancing on a stepladder, clambering over loft joists with a torch in one hand and a box in another is not only awkward but potentially dangerous.

Boarding, lighting and a ladder not only gives you the opportunity to unclutter your living space, but also creates a cleaner and more useful environment. Solve your storage needs and start utilising the largest space in your home from only £435

LUXURY STORAGE ROOMS

Our luxury storage rooms are surprisingly affordable at just a fraction of the cost of a standard loft conversion. Our luxury storage rooms can include the strengthening of loft joists, flooring, lighting, roof insulation, stud walls, roof windows and either plasterboard or skim finish. PRICES FROM £2995
