ENGLISH TOURISM FEATURE

B

efore the sixteenth century people didn’t go on holiday. There were religious festivals, with which many of our bank holidays still coincide, and on those days no work would be done. But people did not travel for the sake of it. Up until the sixteenth century people travelled to pursue their living, or because they were on official state business.

By the sixteenth and seventeenth century, opportunities for travel and tourism widened a little, when sons of rich families began to take tours of Europe, traditionally at the end of their education. This was known as the Grand Tour. The tour was initiated by Elizabeth I, aiming to broaden the minds of promising young men who might later serve in government.

Slowly provision was made for the amusement of patients visiting these spas.

It was only people on pilgrimage who could really be described as travelling for reasons other than work. As we know from the portrayal of fourteenth century pilgrims by Chaucer, there could be a certain holiday atmosphere on a pilgrimage, and in a very limited way provision for accommodation was made for pilgrims along the routes they travelled, and at their popular destinations.

This early form of tourism was a purely foreign affair. Tourism in England was still non existent. There were no places for visitors to go, so no one travelled; and because no one travelled there were no places for visitors to go. If tourism was to develop something had to change and this cultural shift, arose out of an idea in medical circles that mineral water had healing properties. It was as a result of a revival of ancient medical ideas that spas were recreated. The spa towns of Bath and Buxton were mentioned in the Poor Law Act of 1572 as places popular with the sick.

Bath was preeminent amongst spa resorts, but it was a long way from London. To fill the gap Tunbridge Wells and Epsom developed as popular spa towns in the vicinity of London. They quickly became popular, their prestige enhanced by royal patronage. Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I, visited Tunbridge Wells in 1630, which was an important event in the development of the town. In the eighteenth century spa towns reached their zenith under the influence of Richard "Beau" Nash.

A few inns even survive from those times, examples include the Eastbridge Hospital in Canterbury, and the George and Pilgrim in Glastonbury.

Top London acting companies started to visit Bath, games were organised, and by the late sixteenth century spas were beginning to develop into pleasure resorts. Due to these additions healthy as well as the sick started to visit.

Here was a man who probably contributed more than any other

individual to the development of holidays as we know them today. After a patchy career at Oxford, in the army, and in the law profession, Nash finally found his niche in 1705 when he was appointed Master of Ceremonies at Bath. Nash was in charge of entertaining guests at Bath, and his influence is felt in Butlins red coats, 18 - 30 holiday reps, Disney theme park managers, and in every cruise ship captain who comes to have dinner with his passengers. Nash turned Bath into a first class tourist resort. He improved facilities, installed street lights, improved roads and organised top quality entertainments. All spas looked to his example. In 1735 he was made Master of Ceremonies at Tunbridge Wells. The spas were at the height of their popularity. It is tempting to say that the original function of spas was abandoned in favour of pleasure and enjoyment. But certain elements of the healing spa carried over into later pleasure resorts.

IT’S CARNIVAL TIME AGAIN! Yes, Shepshed Lions Club Annual Charity Carnival is being held on Bank Holiday Monday 25th August 2014 in Glenmore Park Shepshed. Every penny raised at the Carnival goes to charitable good causes. Please help the Shepshed Lions help more people in our community. Before its disappearance in the 1990s, the annual carnival was the most important event of the summer in Shepshed. It brought us all together for a celebration of our amazing little corner of the world and created treasured memories for all of us who grew up in the village. So, in 2010, the Shepshed Lions Club decided to resurrect this most important of traditions and organised the first Shepshed Charity Carnival, so that current and future generations had the opportunity to get together and make their own memories… and importantly so that money could be raised to support local causes and those in most need within our local community. The annual event has grown rapidly over the last five years. It is now the signature event of Shepshed’s summer, attracting in excess of three thousand people each year. The carnival is the only true community

charity event in the village and is organised and delivered by the volunteers of the Shepshed Lions Club, with all proceeds going back into our community – to those who need it most. We encourage everyone in our community to get involved however they can, whether it be simply attending on the day, volunteering time to help with organisation or delivery of the event or by sponsoring the event. If you would like to get involved, please do get in touch. Check out our website www. shepshedcharitycarnival.org for more details. Or email info@ shepshedcharitycarnival.org or phone Bob & Sue Lilley on 01509 508265 It promises to be a great day out for all the family. As in previous years the price for entry is only £1 for adults and 50p for children or £3 for a family ticket. LOCAL NEWS

WI MEETING

SERENADE

The speaker for the July meeting of Shepshed WI was Trevor Parr who came in an authentic costume to talk about apothe-cary in 1640. He told members how everyday items such as salt, charcoal, soot, molasses and gun powder were used to cure many ills. Fennel was good for the eyesight, English mustard seeds made into a poultice for colds, rosemary for headaches and cloves for tooth ache (which surprisingly contains something like asprin) He also went into some of the rather gruesome remedies and instruments that were used but had to admit that medicine at that time was rather a hit and miss affair. A most entertaining and informative talk. See page 5 for what’s on this month.

The ladies of ‘Serenade’, Shepshed Women’s Community Choir rounded off a successful year by presenting cheques totalling £2,060.00 to their chosen charities. Leicestershire, Derbyshire, and Rutland Air Ambulance and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research were both presented with cheques for £1.030.00 at the choir’s AGM on Monday 7th July. Both charities thanked the ladies for their hard work and explained the importance of donations to their ongoing success.

SHEPSHED HISTORY SOCIETY The Shepshed History Society which meets every second Tuesday in the month at the Glenmore Centre had a last minute cancellation from the speaker booked to come on July 8th. So it was with great appreciation that Mrs Carole Smith stepped in at a moments notice to recount her very interesting adventure into how she discovered the origins of her birth and the talk was entitled 'They told me I was Adopted' Carole began the talk by showing slides and giving a brief explanation about Dr Barnardo's work and then went onto explaining the process required to start this interesting journey into her past. It took many years and a great deal of patience as she travelled up and down the country following important leads before she learned of what exactly happened. Eventually though she found she was one of seven children, most of whom had been adopted as well. However it was sometime before she could locate her elderly mother but sadly she was to die very shortly after the reconciliation. It was an enthralling and very enlightening evening as members listened to this awe inspiring tale of total dedication as well as expensive mission into Carole's past. So we appreciated her volunteering her services and the society was very grateful for her assistance at the very last minute. New members are always welcome to join the Society, the meeting is opened at 7.30. Coffee and biscuits are served in the break and there is ample car parking space.

The choir’s most recent outing was a performance at the Shepshed Show in June. They sang a wide variety of tunes ranging from a Disney medley, the Theme from Titanic to the Anvil Chorus, which was sung in Italian. When the choir re-group in September they will begin rehearsing, for their next round of appearances which is sure to include some new pieces. Please see the website for more details of these forthcoming events. They will also decide which worthy cause to raise funds for in the coming year. Serenade is now an established and well attended choir and around 70 Ladies meet during term time on Monday evenings at Shepshed High School from 7.30pm until 9:00pm. For any ladies with connections to Shepshed who are interested in joining the choir, please ring Keleigh Atkin on 07775 558219 or email Serenade at: serenadeshepshed@rocketmail.

The money was raised from a variety of fundraising events throughout the year including concerts, market stalls and raffles. Serenade would like to thank everyone who helped them to raise this fantastic figure by attending events, donating raffle prizes or simply buying homemade cakes on a market stall.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Shepshed & the surrounding area and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

GARDENING

Tending The Garden In Summer

I

t’s been a very busy and exciting year for me so far, I’ve been involved with several RHS medal winning gardens, offering my expertise and growing plants for the show gardens at Gardeners World Live at the NEC. In my clients gardens, the border rejuvenation projects I worked on in the spring are developing well, bringing much needed colour and interest and with such great growing weather the plants have truly flourished. So after a busy few months it’s now time for me to enjoy my own garden before the busy autumn design and planting season starts. I avoid adding new plants to my garden during August as they struggle to establish in the hot, dry weather, but I will be looking after the new borders and pots I planted in the spring to keep them looking at their best. So this month I’m looking at the essentials for maintaining the garden in summer. WATERING THE GARDEN Watering is top of my to-do list during summer. It’s absolutely vital if the plants are to thrive. Often rainfall just isn’t sufficient to irrigate new plants so they need a helping hand. When plants are grown on a nursery they’re usually watered on a daily basis to a set regime of so many litres per hour at a set time each day. Once the plants make their way to our gardens they are in a completely alien environment and without good watering they simply can’t adjust to their new home- that’s why so many people lose plants shortly after planting. I always water new plants really well before they are planted to ensure that the whole of the root system is wet through, usually by giving the pot a couple of minutes in a bucket of water. Once planted it then needs another good soak to wet the surrounding soil and settle it in.

Bel Grierson

Garden Designer & Plantswoman

It’s really difficult to say how much or how often a new plant needs watering– it depends on the variety, size, situation etc, but a good soak a couple of times a week during the summer months is a good starting point. I check plants regularly for signs of wilt and leaf drop. Watering in the evening or the early morning is best so that the water has chance to penetrate deep down to the roots before the midday sun has a chance to evaporate it from the surface. Giving the plants a good soak periodically is better than a light sprinkle every day as it encourages the plant to root deeply and search for its own water. There are automatic watering systems on the market designed to irrigate pots, baskets, greenhouses etc. I have used them very successfully in gardens to keep them looking at their best. FEEDING PLANTS DURING SUMMER To make the most of baskets, pots and borders a regular feed is useful to prolong flowering, fruiting and growth. I use the following: Tomato food is great for lots of plants during the summer as its main ingredient is Potassium - which stimulates flower and fruit growth, so it’s perfect not only for fruiting crops like tomatoes & peppers but hanging baskets, pots and bedding too. I also use it to give shrubs a boost if they are reluctant to flower. Pelleted Chicken Manure is great as a general purpose feed. I use it every time I plant vegetables, shrubs, perennials etc. to

give the plant an initial boost. Growmore or Fish Blood and Bone does a similar job. Controlled release granules give a long-term balanced feed throughout the summer. I use it in all of my containers. Finally I use a general purpose liquid feed like Miracle Grow for young plants in the greenhouse before they are planted out in to the garden to keep them growing strongly in their pots. With a good watering and feeding regime and a little deadheading the garden will be looking fabulous all summer long and I can take time to relax and enjoy it. ALL CHANGE! It's all change at the top at Shepshed Charnwood Rotary, a local club based in Kegworth who do a great deal of work in the community whilst at the same time having some great fun. Recently the club held their handover evening where the retiring President, David Fountain (left), handed over the chain of office to David Hayes. In his speech David thanked the club for their support in the numerous local and international events held during the year. One of the local highlights was the completion of an outside classroom for use by autistic children at the Shepshed High School. He considered it to be a privilege to have been President of the club for the second time, especially during its twenty fifth anniversary year. New President David Hayes, a local Councillor and School Governor, thanked the outgoing President for all his hard work and dedication.

He is looking forward to the coming Rotary year during which he hopes to put to further good use the diverse skills within the club to help local projects get off the ground. Not only local but national and international projects benefit from the club's efforts, in particular supporting Rotary's quest to eradicate polio worldwide. Money raised is matched by the Bill Gates Foundation and we are very close to achieving our goal. He looks forward to making new friends and enjoying good fellowship whilst observing the Rotary motto "service above self".

n my role as a Borough Councillor I am always on hand to try and resolve any concerns you may about services provided by Charnwood Borough Council.

has much more Heritage, let us hope that officers take this into consideration when examining the application for 3,500 properties on the Garendon Estate.

PLANNING At a recent meeting of the planning committee an application for 975 dwellings together with 5.5 hectares of employment land and supporting community facilities on land East of Loughborough at Cotes came up for deliberation. This was refused. Before you ask yourselves ‘what this has to do with Shepshed’ let me explain. One of the reasons the officers at the Borough planning department thought it should be refused was due to the impact the application would have on the Heritage of the area. If that is the case, then the area of land between Loughborough and Shepshed

As previously mentioned in the ‘Eye’, I have been working with officers at Charnwood on the retention of trees and hedgerows around Shepshed. I am pleased to report that a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) has been issued for the whole of the tree screening on the area of land between Gelders Hall and Ashby Road. Unfortunately we were too late to get TPO’s on the trees surrounding the site at the top of Leicester Road and Ashby Road Central. I am working with officers to make sure all of the trees and hedgerows on the current and

UPDATE FROM YOUR LOCAL COUNCILLOR possible sites for development have TPO’s put on them. BRITANNIA PUB This area is now getting to look like a waste site in the centre of Shepshed. I have asked the Environmental department at Charnwood to chase the owners up to make the area clean and tidy. LITTER/DOG BINS I arranged a meeting with officers from Charnwood, Shepshed Town Council and Shepshed Borough Councillors, Jane Lennie and Claire Poole to discuss dog and litter bins in Shepshed. Discussions took place on the siting of these bins and the numbers and the frequency of how often they are emptied. A second meeting has been arranged for early September and the public will be involved at a later date when the siting or re-siting of bins is being reviewed. If residents have areas of concern regarding the lack of bins, please contact any one of the Councillors mentioned who will bring this information to the next meeting.

13

Would dog owners please ensure they clean up after their dogs; You can be fined if you do not. Shepshed Town Council and Charnwood Borough Council hire a dog warden to police Shepshed. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT DOG WASTE CAN BE DEPOSITED IN LITTER BINS AS LONG AS IT IS WELL WRAPPED. CO-OP STEPS I am working with the head office in Lichfield to chase up why the steps at the Co-op in the Hall Croft are still waiting to be repaired. Many residents have mentioned this issue to me. I continue to hold a monthly surgery in the Town Council offices with other Shepshed Conservative Councillors from 1011am on the last Saturday of every month except December to enable Shepshed residents to discuss issues which may concern them.

UPDATE FROM YOUR LOCAL COUNCILLOR

COUNTY COUNCILLOR

CHRISTINE RADFORD T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com

A

s your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal, with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. PLANNING I together with three Town Councillors, Cllrs. Savage, Tassell and Timson stationed ourselves at the junction of Iveshead Road with Ashby Road to do a physical count of the number of vehicles using this junction and to count the amount of traffic using Iveshead Road. This we felt would highlight the concerns being expressed by residents living in the area and be hard for anyone to challenge. During the period from 0745 until 0915am we counted 388 vehicles coming down Iveshead Road, 299 going up Iveshead Road and 272 turning right into Charnwood Road from Ashby Road (coming from M1 junction direction). This will strengthen the case regarding Highways when the application for the 103 dwellings (P/14/0777/2) on land to the rear of 62 Iveshead Road is being considered and when the application for over 200 dwellings on the land previously used by the Brick Company to the south of Ashby Road.. Currently the planning permission is for infilling the holes left after clay extraction. I will keep residents informed as and when this application is lodged with Charnwood. INCINERATOR UPDATE Biffa have now lodged their proposed design changes to the planning consent they already have on land at the former Newhurst Quarry site, off Ashby Road. As County Councillor for Shepshed I proposed refusal on the initial application and Leicestershire County Council went on to issue a refusal, but unfortunately approval was granted by the Secretary of State upon appeal in June 2012. One of his comments was that due to the fact this site already had planning permission for a waste tip, which had been approved under the previous Labour Government; it was hard for him to refuse. Biffa reaffirmed their intentions to proceed with this application by

submitting a Scoping Report back in April 2014, which revealed plans to increase the plants ‘overall energy efficiencies and electricity generating capacity’, to see what issues it would need to address in a planning application. The revised application is seeking a number of design changes to the approved facility. They include replacing the approved twin process lines with a single process line as well as moving from a twin stack/chimney at the southern end of the building to a single stack/ chimney and moving the offices inside the main building. Biffa is not seeking to amend any of the conditions on the current permission, such as HGV numbers and access improvements, site opening hours or emissions. Biffa will also be submitting a new Environmental Permit to the Environment Agency later in the year. At a recent Town Council meeting Cllrs Ewing, Savage and Tassell were nominated to represent the Town on the Incinerator Liaison Committee together with Cllr Claire Poole, Borough representative and Cllr Christine Radford as County representative. A project update is available at www. biffa.co.uk/waste-processing/energyfrom-waste/newhurst-efw.html SHEPSHED FIRE STATION The recently refurbished fire station was officially opened by the Chairman of the Combined Fire Authority Cllr Steve Corrall. As Vice-Chairman of the Authority I was invited together with a number of dignitaries from across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and the Chairman and Vice Chairman of Shepshed Town Council. The families of the two firefighters – Mick Bird and Ray Savage together with the families of the two police officers – Bryan Moore and Andy Munn who lost their lives while serving in Shepshed watched as a memorial was unveiled in their memories at the front of the fire station. The Reverend John Bird of the Fire Service, conducted

the ceremony dedicating the new memorial stone. This reflects the sacrifice given by the four men for the community. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue undertook a refurbishment of the retained station after buying the remainder of the building from Leicestershire Police which they both shared. After taking over the rest of the building, the fire service moved its specialist training from Market Harborough to Shepshed, meaning commanders from all over Leicestershire and Rutland will now be using the station for specialist training. There is also the potential for the building to be used by other fire authorities, as well as police authorities, nationally. The building was purchased for £115,000 and the refurbishment cost £200,000. As County Councillor and Vice Chairman of the Authority, I worked with both officers and retained firefighters to make sure we got the best we could for Shepshed. This should safeguard the future of the station and with the new training accommodation should mean our incident commanders have one of the best training facilities in the country. I am also very pleased that there is now a proper memorial to the two firefighters and two police officers who lost their lives while based at Shepshed and no doubt the local police are glad they still have a base within the building. BRADGATE PARK I am a trustee of Bradgate Park and was pleased to learn that the Park has been named 8th Best Park in the UK Tripadvisor Travellers’ choice attractions awards. The Park is well used by families from Leicestershire and beyond and the Ducks must be the best fed in the country. HIGHWAYS After much campaigning on my part I am pleased to report that the majority of white the lines in Shepshed have now been repainted, but I am still in contact with County to make sure that the remaining areas, which I and residents have concerns about will also be repainted. Other areas of concerns I am working on with residents is the car parking situation at the junction of Paterson Place and Brook Street – County cannot see a problem here, but we can.

Another area is dropped Kerbs, previously residents were allowed dropped kerbs, but the criteria has altered and residents are finding it harder to get permission. I am working with our MP Nicky Morgan to get County to rethink this new policy to enable more off road parking. BUSES Following a meeting with a local resident I am taking up the issue again with Kinch buses to try and get the bus which runs from Loughborough via Hathern and Long Whatton to go via Shepshed to East Midlands Airport. Nicky Morgan MP has agreed to work with us on this. Perhaps if residents have any information which would help us with this they could contact me either by e mail, letter or phone. I am aware that there are jobs available at the airport and perhaps more will come available now that DHL are expanding and this facility would help non car owners to access these opportunities. GRANTS Letters will soon be delivered to shops in the centre of Shepshed explaining the grants which have become available from both County and Charnwood to enable owners/leaseholders to improve their shop fronts. BUSINESS FORUM The next meeting of the forum is to be held on Friday 29th August at 4.30pm in the upstairs room at Shepshed Town Council Offices in which information about LLEP and a representative from The Bridge to Work scheme based at Loughborough College. The scheme is designed to get young people thinking about the world of work and equipping them with the skills they need to find a job. You can find more about the scheme on www.loucoll.ac.uk/bridge2work. They will also offer advice about hiring apprentices. I hold a monthly surgery at the Council Offices in Shepshed between 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month (except December).

And one of those transport links is the Great Central Railway’s Bridging the Gap project. The plan to build a bridge to connect the north and south GCR rail lines was launched last year and through donations and Gift Aid the appeal has already raised £500,000. I was therefore delighted to confirm an additional £1m towards this important project which will deliver tourism, apprenticeship and economic benefits as well as enabling the GCR to offer more train testing facilities. Last month I was delighted to join Shepshed resident, Kathy, at Tesco in the Rushes to help briefly with her weekend collection for Diabetes UK. Kathy and customers at the Loughborough Rushes store raised a fantastic £1,113 over the weekend. It was a pleasure to catch up with, Matthew Parrott, the Head teacher at Hind Leys College and Shepshed High just before the end of term. And I look forward to visiting again next term and hopefully having a chance to meet students and staff too. And it was also good to see members of the Shepshed ALLeY Group for their celebratory meal out in Hathern too. I hope my work with local schools will stand me in very good stead for my new job as the Secretary of State for Education. I was honoured and delighted to be asked by the Prime Minister this week to take over this role from the exceptionally talented Michael Gove. Michael is going to be working even more closely with the Prime Minister as his Chief Whip and will be at the heart of our Government.

T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk t is always a great pleasure when in my Ministerial role I am able to champion an excellent local organisation or cause. Recently I announced the latest Local Growth Deal for Leicester and Leicestershire. Rather than just talking about devolving more money to our local areas, without actually doing it, this Government is putting its money where its mouth is. I announced £80m of funding for our City and County which will particularly be spent on boosting skills, delivering homes and building transport links.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

This is a very exciting job and a great time to be taking over. Michael has been a hugely influential and reforming Secretary of State – working to raise standards, focus on discipline and set teachers free from Whitehall interference. My task is to continue these reforms and to ensure they are delivered well and our teachers are supported. As I said on the day of my appointment, education can be life transforming and I think parents want to know that their children are going to get a great education regardless of which school they attend or their background and that they will be given the skills and confidence to play their part in securing a better future for Britain. Delivering the best schools and skills for young people is a key part of our long-term economic plan and I look forward to playing my part in delivering that plan. Finally, in Westminster I’ve been busy following up on the issues raised locally which includes speaking directly to Ministers as well as dealing with many, many policy queries raised by local residents. Thank you to everyone who has been filling in my residents surveys.

Nicky Morgan Shepshed Liberal Democrat Councillors advice surgeries are the 1st Saturday of the month at the Town Council Offices, Charnwood Rd, 10am to 11am. Appointments not necessary. For further details contact 07762095129.

Submitted by Sally Prytherch Hinds Feet Foot Care T: 07806786616 E: hindsfeetfootcare@gmail.com W: www.hindsfeetfootcare.co.uk Callus is a buildup of dead skin cells caused by continual pressure to a specific area of the foot. Usually seen on the heel and under the boney areas on the sole of the foot, it is yellow in colour and thickened or rough. Pressure can be increased by tight footwear, excessive weight, being on the feet for long hours or sometimes bone deformity. During an average day of walking, the total forces on the feet can total hundreds of tons, equivalent to the average weight of a loaded cement truck! We are all familiar with the saying “My feet are killing me!” Hard skin is usually a defense mechanism which protects the softer tissues underneath but excessive build up can become painful. Cracks which develop

in callus, particularly around the heel, can allow bacteria to enter the softer tissues resulting in skin infection and pain, which may require medical attention. Treatment of callus involves identifying and addressing the cause where possible. Professional help may be required to par down the area. Soaking the feet and use of a foot file or pumice stone to remove excess skin and using foot cream containing urea can also be effective. Padding to deflect the pressure can be helpful in some cases. DRIVERS KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD Submitted by Bonita Irish Hallcroft Opticians T: 01509 650666 E: info@hallcroftopticians.co.uk W: www.hallcroftopticians.co.uk

10 key facts for drivers 1. Your vision can change at any age and at any stage in your driving career. Have your eyes tested regularly, at least every two years, unless advised otherwise by your optometrist. 2. Commonly reported problems include not seeing road or street signs and difficulties driving in twilight or night conditions, which might indicate an underlying eye condition or disease. 3. Some eye conditions do not demonstrate symptoms in the early stages so regular sight testing is important to ensure early detection and access to treatment. 4. The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) estimates that, if detected early, half of sight loss can be avoided.

5. You must notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) of any medical condition which may affect safe driving. 6. Loss of vision in one eye, loss of peripheral vision (visual field) and double vision can severely affect your ability to drive, even though you may pass the number plate test. 7. Eye diseases and conditions that affect vision can occur at any age, although they are more common in people aged over 60 and other groups, such as those with a family history of glaucoma and those with diabetes. 8. Drivers aged 70 years and over must renew their license every 3 years and declare that they still meet the medical standards to drive, including the vision standard. 9. Visit your optometrist or optician for more information on vision and driving, including the best type of lenses, frames, sunglasses and lens coatings for driving. 10. A clean windscreen, on the inside and outside, makes it easier to see what is ahead.

KIDS ZONE

I’m Bored ! “I’m bored” said Bethany to Christie cat as they sat in the garden together eating breakfast. “I’m bored and I can’t think of anything to do!” “Bored! How can you be bored when you have such a lovely garden to play in, a house full of books to read and games to play?” asked Christie quite surprised. “I know” said Bethany glumly, “But I’ve played most of the games so many times and I’m not in the mood for reading today”. Oh dear, thought Christie. She really wasn’t sure what to suggest next! Just then Daniel popped round to see what the friends had planned for the day. “Hi Daniel” said Christie, “I was going to have a quiet day at home but Bethany is feeling bored, have you got any ideas of things she could do?” “I was thinking about going for a walk round the lake, it’s such a sunny day and there should be some ducklings and goslings to see” said Daniel enthusiastically. “That’s a good idea, I’d love to come too” said Christie, “What about you Bethany?” Bethany didn’t think it sounded like much fun, she was in a very grumpy mood and wanted to do something exciting but didn’t have any idea what that might be! “Oh come on Bethany, come with us, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it” encouraged the other two. Reluctantly Bethany agreed to come along but she flew just behind them all the way there and Christie could almost hear her grumpy wing flaps! They wondered round the lake for a while, Daniel was looking at all the trees and flowers and Christie listening to the bird song and kept an eye out for ducklings and goslings.

Bethany wasn’t really paying much attention, she was slowly hopping round, feeling grumpy and not knowing why she had agreed to come when she’d have rather stayed at home feeling bored. Just then she heard a quiet quacking noise and looked down. By her feet was a tiny fluffy yellow ducking! Every time Bethany hopped forward, the duckling followed quacking at her! “Go back to your mum, stop following me” grumped Bethany The duckling didn’t listen and carried on following her along the path. Bethany started to look round for the mummy duck so she could point the duckling in the right direction but there was no duck to be seen! Bethany started to get worried, “where is your mummy?” she asked the duckling. The duckling just quacked and looked at her. Bethany scooped the duckling up in her wings and hurried off to catch up with Daniel and Christie. “Hang on, wait up!” she shouted. The other two looked round and saw her rushing up behind them. Bethany explained that she’d found a lost ducking and that she didn’t know what to do! The friends had a chat and decided the best thing for them to do would be to go back to where Bethany had found it and sit and wait to see if mum turned up. They all went back and sat under a tree and waited. Bethany spent quite a while playing with the duckling and laughing and having fun. After a while Christie heard some loud quacking and a large duck appeared right in front of them! The little ducking ran straight over to the duck and they started quacking excitedly at each other. It was obvious to the friends that this was the duckling’s mummy and that she was very very pleased to find her baby! Bethany was sad to see the duckling go but had to admit she had enjoyed her exciting day and wasn’t feeling at all bored anymore! If you find a baby animal, don’t touch it, quite often the parents won’t be far away and will come back to it.

Summer Days

GNOME HOME

High summer, it is here at last. It’s barbie time once more. Cold, dark mornings now are past. It’s picnic time for sure.

YOU WILL NEED:

• Small rocks, cleaned and dry • Acrylic paint • Permanent marker • Spray on varnish

HOW YOU DO IT:

1. Start with a clean, dry stone. Place the rock on a flat surface to see how it sits and the best orientation. 2. Cover the entire rock with one coat of acrylic paint. I chose to only do one coat to allow some of the rock’s surface texture to peek through. Even little kids can help with this step. It’s okay to mix colours! Allow to dry. 3. Follow the natural shape of the rock and paint a roof on the top. If your child experimented with many colours for the first coat, try using a solid colour for the roof. 4. Add window and door details by using a fine detail brush. Make small squares or circles in white or yellow for the windows, and a simple shape for the door. Allow to dry completely. 5. Define the details using a black permanent marker. Trace around doors and windows. Add doorknobs and roof shingles. Use your imagination and use the natural shape of the rock to inspire special details.

Gardeners getting busy now. Yes, it’s that time of year. Borders full of colour. Wow! They give us cause to cheer. Get out into the countryside. Through leafy lanes so pleasant. Birdsong can be identified. Be it robin, thrush or pheasant. So make the most of these summer days. Pack up a lunchtime hamper. Head for the hills and byways. Get a tent and become a camper.

6. If you plan to keep the gnome home outside, finish it off with a coat or two of acrylic sealer. Allow to dry. Then find a special place for your new property and wait for a magical creature to move in!
