e need your support to continue this community magazine.

We really enjoy putting your Shepshed Eye together and throughout 2014 we have made some great partnerships with local businesses and received thanks for the support we give to local community groups and charities, even being awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Shepshed Lions which we are immensely proud of. As you are probably aware we don’t receive any external funding so we need the revenue from local advertisers to cover the print and delivery costs and although Norwood Press continue to give us an

exceptional deal on our printing we will have to look at further reducing the size of the magazine if we can’t secure more advertisers for 2015. We are looking at as many options as we can to enable us to keep the magazine running as I know it is enjoyed by a large number of you who rely on it for community news. If you know of anyone with a local business who might benefit from advertising with us and reaching 5800 potential new customers every month please pass on our details. I hope you enjoy your December magazine and that you all have a very happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.

SHEPSHED HISTORY SOCIETY November 11th a significant date in world history saw the Shepshed History Society being entertained by Mr Ray Bradshaw who along with his daughter Laura and Mr Baden Saville pianist, came along to entertain the society with popular songs from the first world war. Many songs were sung and Mr Bradshaw gave the meaning of quite a few of them first and the society were invited to join in and sing along with him. It was a very enjoyable and at times quite an emotional evening which ended by members holding a 2 minute silence in order to remember the fallen men. The December meeting is the society’s Christmas social evening which will feature a music hall performer and a free lavish buffet supper together with punch provided.

SERENADE NEWS On a warm Sunday afternoon in October, the ladies of Serenade toured a number of nursing homes in Shepshed to entertain the residents with a medley of songs from the World War I era. The residents were very welcoming and a great time was had by all. We started singing at Westroyd, then moved on to The Willows, Charnwood Oaks and then finally ending at Marwood Residential home. Around 30 choir members enjoyed singing through the likes of ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’ and ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’ and it was wonderful to have so many of the residents and staff join in with us! The next event for Serenade will be their annual Christmas Concert, which this year is being held at St Winefride’s Church, Charnwood Road, Shepshed. The concert begins at 8pm on Saturday 13th December, with tickets available by calling 01509 508101 or 07866 439278 or by emailing; serenadeshepshed@rocketmail.com They cost £3 for Adults and £1 for Children and under 3’s are free. As a commemoration of the first World War, there will be many songs from the era such as ‘Pack up your troubles’

SHEPSHED & DISTRICT CAMERA CLUB The members of Shepshed and District Camera Club held their final Competition League event of 2014 at the Council Offices in Charnwood Road on 18th November. The judge for the event was Peter Jones, ARPS. DPAGB., a local Leicestershire photographer, making a welcome return to the Club after several years. and ‘Over there’. The remaining songs will be traditional Christmas music. Loughborough Concert Band will once again be performing alongside Serenade so it will be a really good night. As usual, refreshments will be available at the interval and there will also be the chance for the audience to pick up a prize with a charity raffle. All proceeds will go to Serenade’s chosen charity, which this year is the Peter Le Marchant Trust. This local charity has provided day outings and holidays on waterways for people of all ages with any kind of disability or serious illness for over 30 years. Serenade meet during school term time, on Monday evenings at Shepshed High School at 7.30pm. For any woman with connections to Shepshed, who is interested in joining the choir, please ring Keleigh Atkin on 07775 558219 or email Serenade at serenadeshepshed@rocketmail. com. There is no need to audition and, although many members of the choir enjoy performing, there is no pressure to do so. CHARNWOOD COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES NEW FIELDS The LCC-run ‘Charnwood Community Opportunities - New Fields’ operates in Shepshed on weekdays based in Christchurch Methodist Church. New Fields service users have undertaken a project to make a range of shields highlighting various aspects of community life. The shields will be featured at the event.

The photo shows project supervisors Vanessa Wright (left) and Nicola Gillespie Pickering with two of the shields. I had hoped to include some of the service users in action, but getting the necessary permissions from residential homes is problematic.

LOCAL NEWS

REVIEW - YEOMEN OF THE GUARD CHRISTCHURCH G & S 18TH - 22ND NOVEMBER I know that I’m not alone in my particular love of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Yeomen of the Guard: with its mixture of humour, pathos and, arguably, one of Arthur Sullivan’s finest scores, it is difficult to imagine how anyone could not be stirred by such an emotionally engaging and musically expressive work. However, the task of capturing the essence of this show both musically and dramatically is no easy one, and I had the privilege of stepping back and appreciating how Christchurch Gilbert and Sullivan Society rose to this challenge with aplomb. An excellent orchestra, led superbly by Kate King, an effective set and eye-catching costumes all contributed to the success of the performance. A very strong principal line-up ensured that all of the elements of the show were delivered with flair and ease, with strong vocals and beautiful harmonies, superb dark humour and comic timing, sensitive acting and a tragicomic jester who brought tears to the eyes.

CHRISTMAS PARCELS Shepshed Lions Club members will shortly be delivering a little festive surprise to deserving people in our community. A total of 50 boxes of biscuits and vouchers will be delivered to elderly and needy people in Shepshed to help them enjoy the Christmas Festive Season. This is an annual event that Lions Club members hope will bring a little Christmas cheer to those who receive the biscuits and vouchers.

FOOD BANK DONATION Shepshed Lions Club has made a donation of food and cash to the Shepshed Food Bank to help them provide a little festive cheer for their needy clients. The foodbank relies on donations from business, clubs and societies and public donations to help those in need in our community. Shepshed Lions Club is able to help the foodbank and other charitable good causes because of the generosity of the Shepshed community.

CHRISTMAS HAMPERS Shepshed Lions Clubs have placed Christmas Hampers in some of the local Public Houses to help raise funds for the Club projects.. Hampers have been placed in The Pied Bull, the Black Swan, The Crown, the Bottom Railway, the Horse and the Jolly Farmers. Every single penny raised by Shepshed Lions Club in all of its activities goes to charitable good causes. Shepshed Lions Club President Bob Lilley would like to thank the Landlords, staff and customers for their generous support for this annual charity event.

Of course, what is any musical production without a good chorus? As musical director, Nicole Jordan brought out the best in the company musically, and the staging by director Cheryl Hammersley was inspired, with not a moment missed to keep the attention of the audience. The chorus did them proud, with melodious singing and superb involvement in the plot. This is a company that understands what G & S is about, and both vocally and dramatically did The Yeomen of the Guard justice. What really hit me whilst watching this production was the warmth that exuded from the stage: this is a company that enjoys working together, has a true passion for Gilbert and Sullivan and a determination to keep it alive. It is a company that is proud of the wide range of ages involved, including very young people who are the next generation of Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiasts. One of the most beautiful songs in The Yeoman of the Guard is I have a song to sing, O! Hopefully, for many years to come, local people will respond with the subsequent words of the song, Sing me your song, O! Asnd support this unique and talented local group that next year will be proudly celebrating 50 years of Gilbert and Sullivan in Shepshed.

SHEPSHED VOLUNTEER CENTRE AND SHEPSHED TOWN COUNCIL SUPPORT THE HIND LEYS COMMUNITY DAY

SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS REWARDED IN THE LLOYDS BANK COMMUNITY FUND

Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders has been awarded £2000 in the Lloyds Bank Community Fund 2014 in Shepshed and Loughborough. Following votes from members of the public Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders has been awarded a grant from Lloyds Bank to enable it to continue doing good work in the community. On November 11th, 200 year 11 students took part in a youth volunteering event. Students from Hind Leys College volunteered in various opportunities during the day, these included planting spring bulbs, sowing poppy seeds and planting trees at the BMX track in Shepshed with support from Shepshed Lions. The students also went to garden at several houses in Shepshed, planting spring bulbs and weeding, as well as visiting residential homes in Shepshed to chat to residents. Bulbs and plants were donated by Hathern Nurseries.

In addition, students went to several primary schools to help mentor with reading and help in class.

SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS

26 trained volunteers, some of whom live in Loughborough. East Midlands Ambulance Service has trained the expanded team and was keen to establish a team in Loughborough so Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders established the new team.

Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders are delighted to announce that they now have a team of volunteers who are working in Loughborough and the surrounding area. The original scheme that started on 2nd December 2013 with 8 trained volunteers and covered the Shepshed area has now expanded to a team of

As part of the event, the school hosted an afternoon tea, where 42 elderly and vulnerable people were treated to a fabulous spread, all made by the students at the college. The residents were brought into the school by Shepshed Special Community Bus. Some of the students also designed logos and posters for use by the volunteer centre.

Coordinator for the scheme Bob Lilley said, “ We are delighted to be able to expand into Loughborough with the new team of trained volunteers. It will provide additional support to our communities when it is needed and also support the East Midlands Ambulance Service.”

Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders (CFR) is a group of volunteers who have been trained by East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) in Life Support techniques including use of Defibrillators. The CFR work in conjunction with EMAS and are dispatched to incidents including cardiac arrest, heart attack, angina attacks, breathing difficulties, anaphylactic shock, asthma and diabetic emergencies at the same time as Paramedics and Ambulance staff. The scheme, that started in December 2013 with 8 trained volunteers and working in Shepshed has now expanded to 26 trained volunteers. This has enabled the CFR to set up a team of volunteers in Loughborough to attend incidents in the town. CFR Scheme Coordinator Bob Lilley said, “ The Lloyds Bank Community Fund grant will make a huge difference to Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders. It will enable us to purchase more defibrillators and equipment to provide the CFR to cover more hours to help our communities and support East Midlands Ambulance Service. I would like to sincerely thank all of the members of the public who voted for us during the process, and also Lloyds Bank Community Fund for their generous support”.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Shepshed & the surrounding area and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Many congratulations to our Wedding Competition winners Jon and Claire. Jon wrote a beautiful entry and once you read it I’m sure you can see why they were chosen. Joining in with the pre wedding excitement is Claire’s wonderful son Max who I’m sure will be helping with the planning! Congratulations once again and we will catch up with them in 2015.

I

first saw Claire across a crowded canteen at Burton College May 2010. Claire was working as a lecturer in Uniformed Services and I had gone in as a guest speaker with the Motor Vehicle department to tell students about my work within the motor racing industry. I saw Claire rush across the canteen to get a bottle of water she was dressed in tracksuit bottoms, a polo shirt, hair tied back and no make up but I thought she looked so vibrant and alive. I watched three of her students talking to her and I watched the way she interacted with them, it was that instant that I fell in love with her. I asked the lecturer I was with about Claire and he introduced us, I instantly felt a connection. I couldn't get her out of my head so a month later I emailed her at work and asked if she would meet me for a drink. On our

first date Claire told me about her little boy Max who she adored and the passion for her job teaching. I told her about my love for motorracing, we chatted non stop for three hours.

thrilled Max had helped and that I had asked him if I could marry his Mommy. I had planned on proposing at Christmas but at that precise moment on that day it felt like the best time in the world ask her.

Fast forward to July 2013:

So why do we want to spend the rest of our lives together?

Claire and her gorgeous Son Max moved from Derbyshire to Leicestershire to live with me. October 2013 proved to be a stressful month as Claire had suffered a few health complaints and after a particularly stressful day Claire grabbed hold of me, held me and cried on my shoulder telling me how thankful she was that I was there for her and Max and how much they both loved me. I told Claire I was going to get her a tissue but instead I returned with a tissue, Max and a ring box. I got down on one knee and asked Claire if she would marry me and allow me to always be there for her and Max. Needless to say she cried some more!!!! Max then told his Mom how him and I had chose the ring a few weeks ago. Claire was

Claire tells everyone I am everything she is not, we are opposites in many ways but alike in others but it is our differences that makes us work. Claire grabs life and runs with it, I am quieter more cautious and methodical but it works so well. We would love a huge family so have started the adoption process to build our family as Claire is unable to have more children. I would love for you to consider us for this wonderful prize so I can surprise my amazing hard working Fiancee. (word count 497!!! And boy was that tough to get in under 500!!)

MAKING YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS WREATH

C

hristmas is on the way so for me it’s time to gather foliage, cones & berries from my garden to decorate the house during the festive season. I have made thousands of Christmas decorations in my time, using foliage foraged from gardens or sourced from florists to create basic holly rings, traditional door wreaths, decorative mantle piece swags and bespoke church alter pieces.

Gathering Foliage

They are lovely things to create and they’re cheap too if you use foliage from the garden or those of friends and family along with a few pounds worth of materials from the florist or craft shop. Christmas has official arrived in my home when my homemade wreath is hung at the front door. I urge you to have a go at making your own.

MATERIALS AND TOOLS FOR A TRADITIONAL DOOR WREATH The wreath base – Wreath rings made of metal wire are available in various sizes from florists and craft shops. I also create my own wire shapes & sizes for bespoke commissions.

Base and Material

Foliage- Evergreens are used as the primary foliage to cover the base and to give a traditional look. My favourites are Pine, Leylandii and Holly. A deep green foliage base can be enhanced with accents of variegated foliage like Holly, Euonymous and Pittosporum. Stems of Rosemary, Viburnum and Sarcococca will add fragrance from their flowers or foliage. The foliage pieces need to be about 20cm long to give sufficient length attach and to give a lush look.

A finished Wreath

Embellishments – traditionally clusters of cones are used to give a natural look which I love. Holly berries are a must if the birds have left any. I also use Rosehips, Rowan berries and Crabapples too. For a more country styles I use bundles of Dogwood or Willow stems to add a splash of colour and a naturalistic touch. Tools and materials – Moss or hay can be used to add shape to the wreath base before the foliage. Florists wire on a reel will help to bind the foliage to the base and stub wire is used to attach the embellishments. These are available from craft stores. Pliers, scissors and a pair of good gardening gloves are needed to protect your hands. There’s been many a Christmas where I’ve spent the holidays with hands red raw from holly prickles!

HOW TO CONSTRUCT A DOOR WREATH Attach the loose end of the wire reel to the base ensuring it is secure and won’t unravel. Place a handful of hay or moss on the top of the base and wrap the wire around once or twice to secure. Work around the base trying to keep the edges smooth and limit stray tufts. Once complete tie off the wire end and give it a little trim with scissors if it is a bit shaggy.

other and wrapping securely. Tie off the end of the wire again and create a loop to hang the wreath. To add embellishments like cones or accent foliage, wrap a piece of stub wire securely around the base and twist to create a stalk. Push the stalk through the base and secure at the back. Clusters look better than singles. With the embellishments added, complete with a ribbon bow and Voila! you have a Christmas wreath to decorate your front door. I’d love to see your homemade wreaths, so share them with me by email or on my Facebook page. With Christmas festivities out of the way the New Year brings with it time to reflect on 2014. If your garden has looked tired and lacked colour and interest, then next month I’ll be looking at how I can help you to rejuvenate your space. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas If your borders need rejuvenating, your garden needs a fresh new look or you are looking for design ideas, a Consultation or Planting Plan may be just what you need. Take a look at my website for details of the services I offer www.belgrierson.co.uk or call me on 07506 750250.

Time for the foliage. Attach the wire reel securely. Using 2-3 pieces of primary foliage at a time place the first bundle on to the base and wrap the wire tightly around to tie the bundle to the base. Working around the base, add bundles laying each on top of the

DR MATTHEW O’CALLAGHAN SHEPSHED’S FULL!

T

his month Charnwood Council had 5 applications for 946 houses for approval in Shepshed. Thanks to Labour councillors Claire Poole and Jane Lennie two of these were rejected. Waiting for a decision is the recent application to build 3,200 homes on the Garendon Estate. The fear is that this could be passed before the Core Strategy is approved. This is exactly what happened to an application for 4,500 homes in Thurmaston. They were very recently granted planning permission even though the Core Strategy has not yet been approved. I wrote to the Chief Executive of Charnwood Borough Council to say that I was concerned about the Garendon application. He has now replied to my letter to say that the Garendon application is not likely to be considered until March which is well after the Examination in Public (EIP) of the Core Strategy. The EIP starts on 8 December and I am due to speak on 11 out of the 16 days of the Inquiry to give evidence against the Core Strategy and against any more housing in Shepshed. Labour has promised to build 200,000 more houses if it wins the next election. But they have to be the right homes (for small families, young professionals etc) and in the right places. I invited Hilary Benn, Labour’s Shadow Minister with overall responsibility for planning, to Shepshed last month to see the Garendon site for himself. He had talks at Shepshed WaterMill with representatives of the Garendon Protection Group to hear their concerns about Garendon and about the enormous growth in housing in Shepshed. I shall continue to oppose the Garendon Development and also any further major housing schemes in Shepshed. In my view, Shepshed is Full!

One of my main interests is the NHS, after all I used to work for the NHS and my mother was a doctor in the NHS. I have been working on a recent report from the Care Quality Commission which shows that the two GP practices in Shepshed, Forest House Surgery and Dr Parveen Singh Ghatora, are among the best in the Country with a score of 6, ( 6 is the highest, 1 the lowest). This is excellent news. With the pressure on A&E in Leicester and a waiting list of 3 million, it is important that people should have confidence in their local GP and use them as the first point of call for health problems. One of the issues I shall be tackling in the future that concerns Shepshed residents is the response times for ambulances. At the end of November I invited Tristram Hunt Shadow Minister for Education to the Constituency to talk to headteachers, staff and pupils what they thought about education and how it might be improved. There is concern locally about the future of schools including those in Shepshed and whilst ruling out any major changes in structures, Tristram wants to make schools more accountable for the money they receive, in effect, from you as the taxpayer. The first Saturday in December is Small Business Day and I intend to visit a few local businesses. People complain about the lack of shops and variety in Shepshed. It is true there seem less than there were but we should still support those that remain. In return it would be good if local businesses support, through advertising, local community magazines such as this one. Talking of shopping, Christmas is just around the corner. Who knows what the New Year brings but I hope it you brings health and joy. Meanwhile may I wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas.

N

ew housing applications for Shepshed have continued at an alarming rate over the last year. I have spoken against many housing applications at Charnwood Borough Council but it would appear that the Charnwood Borough Council still see Shepshed as the main site for all new housing in our borough. It has been my pleasure to support and work with resident groups against housing that is wholly unsuitable for Shepshed. Whilst new housing is required, Charnwood Borough Council should explore other ways to provide this requirement for housing – bringing empty houses back into use, exploring brown field sites before building on green field sites, and building affordable housing for local people and first time buyers. The Council’s flawed core strategy states that there should be only 500 dwellings for Shepshed – not upwards of 1,000 or more. I have worked hard to try and resolve the litter and dog fouling problems in my ward, areas around the whole of Trueway Drive, Trueway Drive South, Fairway Road and Fairway Road South have been found to be bad for dog fouling and I would like to thank residents that take the time to let me know about this problem. On Trueway Drive I have been able to have an unused litter/ dog fouling bin re-sited to outside the Newcroft Primary School. I am working to get a another bin sited on Fairway Road South. I will let you know the outcome when I have further information about this.

Litter is also a constant problem in our local area and I have worked with other Labour councillors on this problem. I requested a Charnwood Borough Council officer to visit Shepshed and put a question to the full council on this matter. I would urge all residents to use the bins provided – if you find that your area is very bad please take photos and get in touch with myself or other Labour councillors who will be happy to help. I was very concerned to hear that Charnwood Borough Council were considering cutting the Warden Service to sheltered housing in Shepshed due to the withdrawal of funding by Leicestershire County Council. This would affect some of our most vulnerable people. I worked with residents at Beresford Court in Shepshed to put a petition into the council and on their behalf asked a question at a full council meeting. The answer from the council was far from satisfactory meaning it is very uncertain about what is going to happen to this Warden Service in the future. I will keep residents updated on this matter. If you have any problems please don’t hesitate to get in touch as I am always happy to help. Kindest Regards, Cllr Claire Poole, Labour Shepshed East Borough Councillor Claire can be contacted on 01509 277012 or 07727 121426 The Shepshed Labour Party would like to wish all Shepshed residents a Very Merry Christmas.

GARENDON PARK LETTER

of special interest whereas Garendon has 14 such sites, but again the most worrying aspect of all is the traffic chaos this will bring.

Dear Sir, Subject: Garendon Park and Estate

Write now to Charnwood Borough Council to voice your complaints and get onto your Borough Councillors before we commit the worst folly of a life time. The Planning number for this development is P/14/1833/2.

I write concerning the development of Garendon Estate and the application by Davis and Persimmons. The cumulative impact of traffic from this development will not only be devastating for Shepshed, Hathern and Dishley but will have a far reaching effect to other local areas. I cannot understand why the residents of Nanpantan, and the Outwards have not protested but seem to be in favour of it. 3,200 homes equates to about 5,000 -6,000 extra cars when building is complete and this amount of extra traffic has to go somewheremore than likely down Snells Nook Lane (how long before this is a dual carriage way) and then past the Outwoods to Woodhouse Eaves on to Old Woodhouse and then onto Quorn and some even turning at Woodhouse Eaves on to Rothley to get onto the A6 or other similar arteries into Leicester. This will mean that the ring road going past the Outwoods will almost surely be looked at again and more than likely will get the go ahead. At all the consultations, there have been a lot of better sites suggested by local residents but all rejected by Councillors. The Coates site was recently rejected because it had 4 sites

Yours faithfully John D Popley Executive Member of the Garendon Park and Countryside Protection Group

t seems hard to believe that the end of 2014 is in sight. I hope to see many of you at the various preChristmas fairs, Christmas tree festivals and other events which take place at this time of year. I am sorry that I was unable to attend this year’s Shepshed Remembrance Day service because, for once, I attended the Mountsorrel event. I think we are very fortunate to have so many different Remembrance Day activities taking place across our area and I think it shows just how much we support both those currently serving in our armed forces but also those who have done so and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for us and our security today. 2015 sees significant Parliamentary anniversaries (quite apart from the May General Election!). It is 800 years since Magna Carta was signed and 750 years since the De Montfort Parliament met. The latter was the first Parliament to build on the principles of Magna Carta and included representatives chosen by both the towns and shires to discuss events of national concern – something which ultimately paved the way for the emergence of the House of Commons. There are lots of fantastic resources on this available on the www.parliament. uk website. I will also be talking about this when I visit St Winefride’s School as part of the 2014 Parliament Week. Last year when I visited Newcroft Primary

everyone was in their pyjamas for Children in Need Day so I am not quite sure what to expect this year! Finally in Westminster I am hosting meetings for Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Services and Leicestershire County Council to meet local MPs to discuss funding issues and proposals to change services. MPs will also have the opportunity to meet representatives from the Fire Brigades Union. I and other MPs have written to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government about the inherent unfairness in the way our services in the county receive less money than in other parts of the country – this applies to funding for our police services too. Whilst it is difficult to address this completely at a time when there is generally less money around it would be good to see some movement towards fairer funding, as we are trying to do in education funding. I am sure that the start of 2015 will continue to see me dealing with many cases and questions from Shepshed residents. I welcome your thoughts and correspondence. And don’t forget I send out a monthly e-newsletter which you can subscribe to via www. nickymorgan.com. However, in the meantime, I wish you and your family and loved ones a peaceful Christmas and successful 2015.

LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND FIRE SERVICE

As Vice-Chairman of the Fire Authority I recently attended a meeting in the House of Commons, hosted by Nicky Morgan MP, to brief Leicester and Leicestershire MP’s on proposed changes to our local fire services. The MP’s who attended were Andrew Bridgen, Stephen Dorell, David Tredinnick and Alan Duncan and Liz Kendall sent people from their offices. Other members of the Fire Authority were present as well as the Chief Fire Officer. Following our meeting with the MP’s members of the Fire Brigades Union had a chance to brief the MP’s. I am concerned that Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service is underfunded when compared to other similar fire authorities, We meet with the MP’s to brief them about this and for them to hear about the possible changes. More details can be found at www.leicestershire-fire.gov.uk/irmp and the consultation closes on 31st December 2014.

5 planning applications were discussed at an extra meeting held on 17th November. The Chairman of Shepshed Town Council, Cllr Joan Tassell spoke on behalf of the Town Council against all of these applications, your Ward Cllrs. Jane Lennie, Claire Poole and Christine Radford spoke against the applications in their wards. The application to erect 103 dwellings by the demolition of 62 Iveshead Road was refused as was the application for 250 houses on land off Hallamford Road. Approval was given for the 380 dwellings behind Conway Drive off Tickow Lane, 180 dwelling off Tickow Lane behind Westroyd and 33

dwellings on land at the junction of Oakley Road with Hallamford Road. Nicky Morgan MP as asked the Secretary of State to call in the applications which were approved for further consideration. Your Councillors were of the opinion that none of these applications should have been considered until after the Inspector had considered the Core Strategy. We were concerned that the road network around and down into the town centre would not be able to cope with the increased traffic that these developments would generate, together with the lack of facilities, school places, health facilities and the environment. Your Cllrs asked to be more involved with deciding how the S106 monies are spent.

The Christmas Wish

Flo was heading over to Christie cats house for a cup of tea and a chat just like she always did when Christie was busy baking. It was a cold and wet December day and Flo did not like the damp and wet at all. Christie’s house was all warm and snuggly and Flo soon dried out and felt much better. Christie was busy mixing her Christmas cake so the house smelt beautiful. “I hate it when it’s all damp and muddy outside Christie, when are we going to have snow? I like the snow, it’s all cold and crisp and it makes me feel happy.” “I don’t know” said Christie, “it’s nearly Christmas and there’s no sign of any snow, some years we don’t get any at all”. Flo didn’t look happy “I wish it would snow so we can go out and build a snowman” “Ah well if it’s a Christmas wish you’re after come here and give the cake mix a stir” said Christie, “Stir a cake!” replied Flo looking confused “and exactly how is that going to help?” “Everyone knows that wishes that get stirred into a Christmas cake come true! Come here and try, all you have to do is to give the mixture a big stir whilst you close your eyes and make your wish”. Flo decided that it was worth giving it a go, after all she had nothing to lose. So Flo made her wish and then helped Christie pour the mixture into a tin and pop it in the oven. After that the friends sat and had a cup of tea together.

Ho, ho, ho! Soon you will be visited by a gentleman in red. He’ll arrive on Christmas Eve while you’re asleep in bed. To the sound of distant sleigh bells he’ll be here. If you’ve been good he won’t forget you, never fear. Through the heaven’s whirling snowflakes he’ll arrive. Then down upon your very rooftop silently he’ll dive. As if by magic, down the chimney makes his entry. His sack so stuffed with toys and goodies, there are plenty. Come light of day on Christmas morn, his mission done. Delivered all the presents, every single one. That’s all finished now and he has done his very best. Back to his arctic hideaway and a well-earned rest. By Chris Rose

QUICK CRAFT Paper Snowmen

After they had finished their tea, the sun started to fade and Flo decided she had better go home before it got too dark. “Thank you for the tea Christie, I hope I can come and try the cake when it’s baked?” said Flo “Of course Flo, I’m going to invite Daniel round too and we can enjoy it together” Christie opened the door to let her friend out when all of a sudden a single, lonely white snowflake danced through the air and landed on Flo’s beak. “Did you see that Christie?” Then another flake danced round and landed on Christie’s ear. “Yes Flo! It’s snowing!” and sure enough one by one, more tiny little pure white flakes danced through the sky and landed on the friends and around their feet.

HOW TO DO IT: Cut the snowman template out but make sure everyone’s finished reading the magazine first! Cut a strip of paper or wrapping paper the height of the snowman. Fold the strip in a concertina /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ making sure it is the width of the snowman. Place the snowman on the paper (making sure the orange sides are where the folds in the paper are) and draw round it.

“See” said Christie, “Christmas wishes do come true!”

Cut round the snow man out making sure you DON’T cut the orange side sections that are straight.

And it seems like they do! The friends arranged to meet up the next morning with Daniel and build a snowman just like Flo had wished for.

Unfold your snowman carefully and find somewhere nice to display them.

Do you have a Christmas wish?

You can make the chain longer by using a longer strip of paper.

Nail reconstruction is a method of creating a false toenail, usually for cosmetic reasons, where the nail is diseased or has been damaged. For some people self esteem can be greatly reduced by what is perceived to be an abnormal appearance of the nails. This can lead to reluctance to wear sandals in the summer or to appear barefoot, restricting some sports or social activities. A new nail or set of nails can enhance the appearance and increase self confidence. After preparation of the remaining nail, acrylic gel or polymer resin is applied in stages and cured (hardened) using an ultra violet light. The nail can be re-built if there is some remaining nail to anchor the new nail to, and can last up to ten or even twelve weeks depending on client needs and rate of nail growth. If the natural nail has been totally removed it is still possible to create a prosthetic nail but this will only last for a short time, maybe over a weekend due to an absence of nail to anchor it to. However, a prosthetic

Fungal nail infection can still be treated if an acrylic nail has been created. A small area around the cuticle can be left free of gel, and treatment applied to the area as normal while the diseased nail grows out. Other acrylic gel products have a base layer containing silver and claim to treat fungal nail. The final result usually feels completely natural as well as being cosmetically pleasing to the eye, and nail varnish can be applied and removed as with natural nails.

“ALL THAT SQUINTING IS BAD FOR YOUR VISION,” You’re probably familiar with these words of wisdom: “Don’t sit too close to the TV; it’s bad for your eyes,” or “All that squinting is bad for your vision,” and even “If you cross your eyes, they’ll stay that way!” You might not be too surprised to learn these motherly statements aren’t completely true—read below for some more common eye health myths. • Squinting– bad for vision – Squinting won’t hurt your eyes; it actually enhances your focus as your pupil gets smaller with the decreased amount of light. However, if you find yourself squinting frequently, it might be a sign that you need glasses or contacts to correct a refractive error (such as near-sightedness or far-sightedness).

• Sitting too close to the TV – There’s no evidence that sitting too close to the TV will damage the eyes; however, it may be a sign of nearsightedness. • If you cross your eyes, they’ll stay that way – Contrary to the old saying, your eyes will not stay that way if you cross them. If you or your child can’t control an eye from crossing, schedule an examination with an optician. • UV rays are only harmful in the summer sun – This is an important myth to bust! Radiation from the sun beams down regardless of the weather, and your eyes are exposed to UV rays 365 days a year. Keep your eyes protected with glasses that block UV. • I only need to visit my eye optician if something seems wrong – You should have a comprehensive eye examination every 2 years, even if your eyes feel fine and you think you can see clearly. Eye examinations help protect your vision and provide insight into overall health. Diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and multiple sclerosis can be discovered during an eye exam. People with some medical conditions are recommend to have an eye examination annually.
