CHARITY FEATURE

“I don’t see the point in measuring life in time any more. I’d rather measure life in terms of making a difference” - Stephen Sutton

WILL YOU BE ‘A BIT MORE STEPHEN’?

M

any of us have heard of Stephen Sutton, the teenager with terminal cancer who shot to fame with his bucket list. The country seemed to pull together to help him achieve his dreams; from breaking a world record, to hugging an elephant and having a tattoo! But his most famous item on the list was to raise funds for The Teenage Cancer Trust, he has now raised over £4 million pounds, the largest single amount raised on any Just Giving Page! He managed this by having fun, organising events for others to enjoy and not giving up or withdrawing from society. I’ve decided to take a closer look at the Teenage Cancer Trust in Leicestershire and wonder if we could each be ‘a bit more Stephen’ and push ourselves to raise funds for charity? • Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the seven young people aged between 13 and 24 diagnosed with cancer every day. • They build specialist units within NHS hospitals bringing young people together to be treated by teenage cancer experts in a place designed just for them. They want every young person with cancer to have access to this specialist support, no matter where they live. • Traditionally treated alongside children or elderly patients at the end of their lives, young people can feel extremely isolated during treatment, some never meeting another young person with cancer.

Being treated alongside others their own age can make a huge difference. • Teenage Cancer Trust empowers young people to take control of their health and speak up when something changes. Their pioneering Education team deliver positive and interactive free cancer awareness sessions in schools, colleges and universities on the signs of cancer, cancer treatments and prevention as well as healthy living. • Our Teenage Cancer Trust unit is at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, with the next nearest being Nottingham City Hospital. • Between them these units support 125 young adults with cancer. The running cost of the Leicester unit alone is over £120,000 per year. • They rely on donations to do their vital work and are always looking for support from the local community to organise fundraising events. Stephen sadly passed away on the 14th May but was fundraising up to the week of his death. I hope he has inspired many people to think about what they could achieve for the many charities that need our support. If The Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity that you would like to support please contact heather. bowen@teenagecancertrust.org alternatively there are many other charities featured in this month’s magazine so please see if you can find time to get involved and help. I know I’m going to try and be ‘a bit more Stephen’ are you?

LOROS LADIES LUNCH

Photograph by: The Lens Butterfly. Left - Right: Toastmaster Mike Jacobs, LOROS President Jennifer, Lady Gretton, Julia Bradbury, Event Organiser Laura Betts and Fundraising Manager, Diane Morris On Wednesday 14th May a sellout crowd flocked to King Power Stadium to dine in the company of LOROS Patron and small screen presenter Julia Bradbury all in aid of our local Hospice. The LOROS Ladies Lunch is one of the charity’s longest running, much loved events with women from all over the County and beyond turning out to support LOROS. This year’s event raised almost £10,000 in just five hours! The ladies played stand-up bingo, purchased tickets for a raffle and stood in line to have their books signed by Julia Bradbury all to raise this incredible sum which will go directly towards patient care at the Hospice. Laura Betts, Fundraiser and Event Organiser said “It is such a privilege to be involved in this event. We receive incredible support year after year and we are already taking bookings for next year’s luncheon without having confirmed our Guest Speaker!

We are so lucky to have such dedicated supporters.” Not only did Julia entertain 600 ladies with her fabulous after dinner talk focussed around her career, passions and close-knit family but she also helped to put smiles on the faces of patients, staff and volunteers when she visited the Hospice on Wednesday morning prior to the luncheon. Diane Morris Fundraising Manager said “Julia became a Patron for LOROS back in September 2012 and there had been a great deal of excitement anticipating her visit. The whole day was a resounding success, her visit to the Hospice really helped to boost morale and with Julia’s help we then went on to raise almost £10,000 at the luncheon, we feel extremely privileged to have Julia as our Patron.” You can book now for the 2015 LOROS Ladies Luncheon now by calling the LOROS Fundraising Department on 0116 231 8431.

Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling for all knitters to join in The Big Knit this year to raise much-needed funds to help keep local older people warm and healthy this coming winter. Peter Ralphs, on behalf of this well-known local charity, said “We are so grateful to those who are already clicking away, though our 2014 drive has started rather slowly. TWO TREATS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE!

The Loughborough Orchestra is sharing the stage with Newtown Linford Choral Society for its Summer Concert on June 21st this year. The programme is full of wonderful melodies to please the ear, kindle the imagination and lift the spirit! The main orchestra piece is Scheherazade, which was composed by Rimsky – Korsakov as a suite of four connected movements based on the “Arabian Nights” folk tales.

Orchestra Conductor Trevor Lax

It was his intention to create music which brought to mind “numerous and varied fairy-tale wonders” which gave a distinctly Oriental impression. However, various friends persuaded him to give more specific titles to each of the four movements. So, the imagination can build pictures around The Sea and Sinbad's Ship, The Kalendar Prince, The Young Prince and The Young Princess and Festival at Baghdad.

To herald the concert, Tchaikovsky’s “Capriccio Italien” gives a rousing sound. It starts with a bugle call that Tchaikovsky heard whilst staying in Italy, which was played by Italian cavalry regiment. Later on, there are some rather more Spanish sounding passages – but then, he did regard it as a fantasy piece! A very different tone is set in the second half of the concert by the Newtown Linford Choral Society. The beautiful Requiem by Fauré provides an opportunity for the two groups to combine their talents. It is probably fair to say that this is one of the best loved settings of the Requiem with its ethereal and tuneful melodies.

Choral Society and a member of the first violin section of the orchestra. The concert is on Saturday June 21st at Emmanuel Church, Loughborough starting at 7.30 pm. Tickets prices for adults are £7.00 in advance or £8.00 on the door and for concessions, £6.00 in advance or £7.00 on the door; under 16s are free. Tickets are available from members of the orchestra or from Mr. & Mrs. P. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Shepshed & the surrounding area and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT VISITS SHEPSHED CHURCH The Rt Honourable Nicky Morgan MP paid a visit to Charnwood Road Baptist Church Lunch Club recently. The Rev. Howard Ketton welcomed her and congratulated her on her recent appointment to the post of Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Minister for Women. She shared lunch with church members, which was served in the church because there was more space, followed by a talk on her work as our constituency MP. She began her talk by saying that since she had been an MP there had been many ‘firsts’ and eating Steak Pie in a church was yet another. She spoke of her work and life balance and said that she leaves home on Monday morning returning on Thursday, working from several offices, but is well supported by her staff.

She said she was very pleased to be called Minister for Women and spoke a little about what this entailed. Nicky then went on to say that although MPs had earned a bad name through the expenses scandals etc. she found that most of them were working very hard for their constituents, whether the problems were large or small. Her Christian Faith was important and she said that she attended a church in Loughborough and helped at Sunday School once a month. She talked a bit about the Christian witness in the House of Commons and the fact that she attends a weekly Bible Study group where Christian colleagues share their problems and strengthen each other through prayer. Church members were then able to ask her questions which she was more than willing to answer covering issues that are affecting our community - housing, problems of older people and employment. Finally the Rev. Ketton thanked Nicky for finding time in her very busy schedule to spend time with us.

THE GLENMORE CENTRES AGM The Glenmore Centres AGM will be held on the 9th June at 7.30pm. After the election of the trustees a talk will be given by a representative of the Shepshed Food Bank. Refreshment will be served afterwards. Everyone is invited and we would love to see some new faces.

JHON’S WEIGHT LOSS HAS GONE SWIMMINGLY! A 17-year-old from Coalville has lots to celebrate after losing 3st 7lb to reach the finals of a national slimming competition where he met Olympic swimming sensation Rebecca Adlington. Jhon Bateman was delighted to make the final 44 in Slimming World’s Young Slimmer of the Year 2014 competition out of all 11,000 Slimming World groups across the UK and Ireland. The competition recognises the enormous achievements of young people aged 16 to 21 in making long-term lifestyle changes to become fitter, healthier and happier. Obesity is not just a problem for adults in the UK and Ireland. Many young people are so severely overweight that they’re beginning to suffer serious health conditions like Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure – conditions which would normally be associated with people of their parents’ or grandparents’ generation, so there is a huge need for healthy lifestyle support for young people and their families. Slimming World’s programme for young people aged 11 to 15 allows them to attend a group for free when they join with a parent or guardian,* and the club has a reduced weekly fee of £3.95 (€7.50 in RoI) for 16 and 17 year olds.

Jhon, who was an Olympic torch bearer last year, joined the Whitwick Slimming World group in September 2013. He says “I used to feel like I was different from all my friends, I felt like I stood out because I was bigger and I couldn’t always do the same things, shop at the same high street stores or wear the same clothes as them. It affected my confidence and I didn’t want to be like that for the rest of my life. I wanted to make changes and I knew I needed help to do that.”

His fellow members in the Whitwick group voted for him to represent them in the Young Slimmer of the Year competition and he was invited to the semi-finals, which were held at Slimming World’s head office in Alfreton. It was there he met Rebecca Adlington who swapped swimming for slimming to come along to Slimming World, which is close to her hometown of Mansfield, and make the day extra special for the youngsters taking part.

“I heard about Slimming World from my occupational therapist. When I decided to join the Whitwick group, I was really nervous but everyone was friendly and helpful. It was much easier than I expected to start making healthy choices and I soon realised that I didn’t need to make drastic changes, just small things like swapping white bread for wholemeal and starting to cook healthy meals instead of buying junk food or just putting convenience foods in the microwave made a big difference. I picked up lots of recipes and tips in the group – I’m actually not a bad cook now – and the encouragement I got from the other members and my Consultant Sharon really kept me going, even if I had a difficult week.”

Rebecca won two gold medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympics and two bronze medals at London 2012 and is the current world record holder in the 800m Freestyle. She says “I loved meeting all of the young people at the competition, including Jhon. I’m so proud of all that I’ve achieved in my swimming career, but now my passion is to help more young people learn to swim. Being active is so important for your health. Teenagers and young people get a bad reputation because we think of them all sitting in front of the TV or a computer but the young slimmers I met, like Jhon, have shown that their health is important to them and that given the right tools it is possible to make positive changes whatever your age.”

Since that first visit Jhon has lost 3st 7lb, going from 15st 12lbs to 12st 5lbs, and feels great.

Sharon Dawson, who runs the Whitwick Slimming World group which Jhon attends, agrees

“Everyone is so proud of Jhon. What he’s achieved is so much more than just losing weight. The changes Jhon has made now have given him the knowledge and skills to make healthy choices and new active habits that will stand him in good stead for the rest of his life. Most of all it’s given him the self-belief and confidence to achieve his dreams, and hopefully meeting Rebecca has inspired him even more.” Unfortunately Jhon wasn’t the overall winner of the competition but anyone who’s been inspired about his story is welcome at the Whitwick Slimming World group at Hall Lane Methodist Church every Monday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm or for more information they can call Sharon on 07855 250017

The rules are simple. - Every player bats once each inning - All base runners are safe - Every player scores a run before the inning is over - Last batter up hits a home run each inning - Community volunteers serve as "buddies" to assist the players - Each team and each player wins every game Paul Lovell from County Contractors regularly donates to the charity, recently providing them with funding for kit, and paying for families who can’t afford the joining fee. The 18th May saw the local business raise £271 at a car boot sale for the Miracle League with the help of donations from ECA Toolfast, EH Smiths, Leics Plastics and Harlow Timber. LOCAL NEWS

EFFIE - FIGHTING FOR BATTERNS Effie was born in June 2010 and seemed a perfectly healthy child. She met all of her milestones, even exceeded some of them. She loved to go to the local farm, run around at the park and play with her friends. When Effie was 2½, in December 2012, she seemed run down and anxious. We thought she may be coming down with a cold, but in reality it was much worse. In Jan 2013, Effie had her first seizure, a drop attack in the bath. The following day saw 3 seizures, by the end of the week she was having 10 a day and was admitted to hospital. Effie was diagnosed with epilepsy and started on anticonvulsant medication. Over the next 6 months, the seizures become increasingly difficult to control and her medication was regularly increased. Effie's development slowed considerably over the following months. Effie was admitted to hospital again in June 2013, the day before her 3rd birthday, unable to walk, her speech was slurred and she was hallucinating. Another medication was added which seemed to help and she was able to walk again, albeit very wobbly with lots of falls. As the year progressed, Effie's ability to walk and talk continued to decline and she started to have problems with her sight. In January 2014, we were given the devastating news that Effie has Late

Infantile Batten Disease. Batten disease is a fatal, inherited disorder of the nervous system, in which previously normal children develop vision problems or seizures. Over time, the children suffer mental impairment, worsening seizures and progressive loss of sight and motor skills. They may have difficulties sleeping and become distressed for no apparent reason. They lose their ability to sit and hold their head up, and will eventually need to be tube fed. Chest infections become frequent and suctioning will be required to maintain airways. Eventually, the children become blind, bedridden and demented. Batten disease is always fatal, with death usually occurring between the ages of 5-12. Despite her worsening symptoms, Effie is still a very happy, brave and inspirational little girl who loves music, stories and watching Peppa Pig! At the moment, there is no treatment and no cure for Batten disease. Our fundraising will pay for special needs/sensory toys to try to help Effie develop new skills, physiotherapy to help keep her mobile for as long as possible, and any medical equipment she needs on her Batten's journey. We are also supporting the BDFA, who fund research into Batten disease and help other families affected this terrible disease.

As part of its 20th birthday celebrations, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People has launched the Rainbows Great Birthday Bake.

“Over the last 20 years, we’ve helped thousands of terminally ill and life-limited children, young people and their families, through the toughest days of their lives. Right now, we’re caring for 288 children and young people – that’s more than ever before. So whether you’re a cake baker, or just an eager cake eater, do your bit and help us to bake a difference.”

The hospice, which cares for children and young people with terminal and life-limiting illnesses, needs budding chefs or enthusiastic sweet tooths to hold baking fundraising events.

WINDOW DRESSING

Make The Most Of Your Conservatory More of us are adding a conservatory as a clever way of creating more living space. But with so many windows you can feel exposed and it can seem daunting to know where to begin to choose the right type of blind to reduce the suns glare and add protection for your furniture, while still giving you that wow factor... Before making a decision here are a few things to consider: What the room is being used for? Think about using a darker colour and/or a more opaque fabric to reduce glare in a TV room, lounge or home office. Go for one blind per glass panel if possible as smaller blinds are easier to operate; they may cost more initially but will last longer and be more reliable. Pleated roof blinds with a high performing reflective coating will give more protection to your furniture and be an investment in the longer term. It’s less critical to have reflective coated fabrics on the side windows, but pleated blinds are still a great choice as they fold away neatly. For a sleek and contemporary look opt for a pleated or Venetian blind in a Perfect Fit frame. This system requires no drilling or screws and gives enhanced privacy as the blinds ‘hug’ the window and cover any light gaps. Conservatory blinds, roof blinds and Perfect Fit blinds are available in many colours and fabrics from Acacia Curtains and Blinds. SHEPSHED VOLUNTEER CENTRE Shepshed Volunteer Centre is a valuable community resource helping some of the most vulnerable and isolated people in Shepshed since 1983. I am the Activities Support Worker at the centre, and look after approx 100 volunteers who help the local community. There are three main services running from the centre:

• A Social Transport Scheme taking elderly and disabled people to appointments at the doctors, the hospital or the hairdressers to name a few. • A Gardening Scheme - a team of gardeners go to local resident’s houses and take care of the garden they are no longer able to manage themselves. • A Befriending Scheme - where we visit local residents in their own home for a chat or a social visit and also our new scheme of community connectors, where our aim is to bring those who have lost their social circles back into an interactive social environment. • We also run some other schemes from here, such as our Jigsaw Library, Community Lunches and a services booklet containing details of clubs, groups and organisations for people needing help in and around Shepshed. We also hold a youth volunteering event each year, funding permitting, enabling up to 300 young people aged 10 - 14 to volunteer in the local community doing activities such

as gardening, making and selling cakes and holding a community lunch for the elderly and carers in Shepshed. This year's event will be held week commencing the 9th June 2014, and we will be in and around Shepshed during that week, please do say hello to the young volunteers if you see them out volunteering! They will also be selling cakes they have made to raise money for charity, so please pop along if you are available. Shepshed Open Gardens will also be running this year on 5th and 6th July 2014. There will be 14 gardens open in Shepshed from 1-6pm on that weekend, programmes are available from Shepshed Volunteer Centre, The Shepshed Show and participating gardens. We will also be present at the Shepshed Show on June 21st, so if you are thinking of volunteering for our schemes or anything else locally, please come and see me.

GARDENING

W

ith summer fast approaching it’s time to plant up hanging baskets and containers to give a cheery splash of colour around the house during the sunny months. I usually go for a couple of hanging baskets and a selection of large pots which are close to the garden hose to make watering easy. For those who don’t have the facilities to raise their own hanging basket and bedding plants themselves, late May & Early June is the best time to visit the local Nursery or Garden Centre to select ready grown plants. Basket and bedding plants don’t respond well to frost and cold winds so waiting until all risk of frost has past before planting out will save money and a return trip to buy replacements for those lost to the cold! I must have planted up tens of thousands of hanging baskets and planters over the years whilst working at plant nurseries. Whether it’s a traditional style or a contemporary colour theme that’s required there are plenty of suitable plants to choose from. See my favourites below.

PLANTING UP A BASKET OR POT Wire baskets allow you to plant through the sides for a spectacular display. To do this, use a pair of scissors to poke through the moss/fibre and then puncture through the plastic liner. Using about 6 small plants, gentle push the roots through the holes to the inside of the basket. To plant the top of the wire baskets and plant wicker baskets & pots, loosely fill with compost to just below the rim. Start with the larger plants first, gently firming the compost around the roots. Continue, making sure that the compost surface remains just below the edge of the basket/ pot, to help with watering. Water the basket/pot well and allow to settle for a few days in a sheltered spot. A little deadheading will be necessary and feeding with Tomato fertiliser throughout the summer will ensure a continuation of blooms. Watering everyday may be required during hot spells.

B lue & Pink Theme Basket

CHOOSING THE RIGHT BASKET OR CONTAINER From experience I recommend choosing hanging baskets & pots 14” or larger as anything smaller is difficult to look after and keep watered once the summer has arrived. Wire baskets need some sort of attractive liner. I use fresh moss layering 1” over the entire frame, but an alternative fibre liner is also suitable. Both wire and wicker baskets must then have a plastic liner, I simply use an old compost bag with the black side facing out & trimmed level with the rim. A few holes punctured in the base will aid drainage. A quality compost mix is vital if the basket or pot is going to look good all summer long. I use good multi-purpose compost and add water retaining granules and a slow release fertiliser- these are available from the nursery or garden centre.

MY RECIPE FOR 14” HANGING BASKET OR POT x1 Pelargonium (centre), x1 Trailing Fuchsia, x1 Trailing Petunia, x1 Ivy Leaf Geranium, x3 Nemesia/Diascia, x3 Verbena/Nepeta. For Wire baskets use the following additions for side planting:- x2 Nepeta, x2 Bacopa, x2 Verbena. MY FAVOURITE HANGING BASKET AND CONTAINER PLANTS Pelargonium – AKA Upright geraniums, these are great in pots or to add height to baskets. Good for sunny spots. Fuchsias – available as bush or trailing these will flower nonstop with a little deadheading. Available in a huge range of colour and flower shapes. These are particularly good in shady areas. Verbena – there are lots of colours available, some are true trailers whilst others will keep compact. Bacopa – lovely small white, blue or blooms on neat trailing plants. COLOUR COMBINATIONS Try selecting plants based on a colour theme for truly gorgeous baskets and containers. Some of the bespoke baskets I have created over the years include: Blue/ Lilac/Pink, Pure White, Blue/ Gold & Purple/Magenta, to name but a few. With a few baskets and pots planted you’re set for a colourful summer! Not all of us have time to care for these abundant beauties so next month I’ll be looking at which plants to choose if you need a low maintenance garden to suit a busy lifestyle.

LOCAL NEWS

THE BRIDGE EMMA'S STORY Emma arranged an appointment with a Housing Advisor. She had received a letter from her Housing Association stating that they were going to apply for a warrant from the Courts to evict her from her home. At the appointment, Emma was extremely emotional. She described to the Housing Advisor that she had lost her daughter 18 months ago. Since then she had suffered with severe depression and had at times felt suicidal. Emma told the Advisor that she was being assisted by a Psychiatrist and a Therapist. She felt incapable of managing her affairs due to her mental health problems, however, she was managing to continue to work part time which she said was the only reason that she got out of bed everyday. The Housing Advisor assessed Emma’s income and expenditure. It was clear that she could not afford the monthly rent in addition to the monthly rent arrears payments that had been set previously by the Court. The Advisor’s first priority was to prevent the eviction from happening. With Emma’s permission, the Housing Advisor contacted the Housing Association for copies of the Court Order and copies of recent rent statements. These documents along with the supporting information that the Advisor had gathered enabled the Advisor to put a case together to prevent Emma from becoming homeless. After discussions with the Housing Officer and Emma, it was agreed that the Housing Advisor would apply to the Courts to vary the current court order which compelled Emma to pay an unaffordable amount. The cost of putting in such a request to the court was £35 which Emma could not afford. The Housing Advisor contacted Charnwood Borough Council and requested a payment of £35 from their Homelessness Prevention Fund. The Council

GEMS Charity was founded in June 2012, by Andy and Sally Anderson of Kibworth to improve the experience of chemotherapy patients and their families at the Leicester Royal Infirmary Oncology Suite.

made us feel we wanted to give something back and although we couldn’t undo the experience they were going though, we could try to make the environment more comfortable for the patients now and in the future.”

‘GEMS’ is made up of the initials of four very special friends of theirs. Two have survived cancer but unfortunately the other two passed away. During that time they both supported their friends at weekly treatments at the Osbourne Suite it became apparent to them that the whole experience for patients could be made more comfortable. This inspired them to raise funds for non- medical equipment to make the patient's time at the suite more comfortable during what can be a very difficult time.

They raised £1,250.00 after four weeks and purchased window blinds which were donated to the chemotherapy suite on 20.7.12. Sufficient funds were raised after seven months to become a registered charity and in June 2013 GEMS presented the suite with £20,000. at the end of 2013 to purchase six specialist chairs (pictured below). The team at GEMS are currently raising funds for pumps for exclusive use on the suite, which will cut the waiting time for the patients to receive their treatment. They hope to achieve this target by the end of 2014.

Andy and Sally said, “We believe that more comfortable specialist chairs, curtains and other nonmedical equipment would greatly benefit those enduring long term cancer treatment. The courage of our friends and other patients

agreed and provided Emma with the money. The outcome of the Court application was successful as the Court agreed to lower the payments and the Housing Association agreed not to proceed with the eviction. The Housing Advisor now needed to ensure that Emma would not find herself in this situation again. With Emma’s permission, a referral was made to the Tenancy Support Service at The Bridge so that she could receive ongoing support. Emma was given assistance to claim Housing Benefit to contribute towards her rent costs and helped to make a claim of backdated housing benefit which would clear some of the rent arrears. Emma was really grateful for all of the help that The Bridge had given her and for enabling her to keep her

CONDUCTIVE EDUCATION CENTRE

Steps Conductive Education Centre work hard every day to help the lives of young people who are affected with Motor Dysfunction or delay across the East Midlands. Situated in Shepshed they rely on donations and fundraising to carry out their important work. Conductive Education was pioneered in Hungary in the 1940’s by Dr Andras Peto. The method of teaching allows more children to be kept in mainstream schools. Conductive Education is a holistic approach centred on the child not the disability, the process - in which play is an integral element - stimulates continuous development in bodily control, mobility and communication, transforming the child’s confidence, motivation and well-being. Founded 18 years ago Steps only moved into to their purpose built home in 2007, prior to that they were renting rooms to carry out their vital work. Their luck changed when Patron Rosemary Conley funded a move which involved local tradesmen helping out and converting the old school building on Loughborough Road into the fantastic facility they have today, part of which is rented to Glebe House. 26 families are currently on the books and Steps is their life line, not only providing conductive education for the children but also supporting parents too, as living with a disabled child is physically and emotionally exhausting and being able to talk with parents who are walking a similar path is vital. Steps also organise days out for the families which means parents can feel confident going out to public places with their child knowing they have the support of Steps if they encounter difficulties or prejudice. Steps have an open door policy and parents are able to self-refer, if you think Steps could help you contact Trish on 01509 506878 or visit www.stepscentre.org.uk

irstly I would like to start this update by thanking all Shepshed residents for giving me the opportunity to represent them on Charnwood Borough Council it is a great pleasure to support local people and something that I really enjoy doing for Shepshed residents, so thank you for your continued support.

PHOTO Collecting their awards from Aegon representative Julie Preston (left) and Fed Cup Captain (and Andy's mum!) Judy Murray (right) As some of you may/may not know the past 12 months have seen both Inside Out Tennis and some of our partner clubs such as Loughborough LTC getting recognition that they really aren't used to. Both Martyn Whait and Tim Jamieson have won awards at the LTA's prestigious Aegon National Tennis Coaching Awards for Disability Coach of the Year and Apprentice Coach of the Year respectively. As winners of their category they now go forward to potentially win the overall Coach of the Year Award which is presented at the ATP World Tour Finals at the O2 Arena in London later in the year. What made it even more unusual than simply having 2 winning coaches from the same coaching group is that Tim was actually coached by Martyn throughout his junior career! If anyone would like to contact them for more info, feel free to call: Martyn: 07970 277338 Tim: 07976 386606. You can find more details on the awards here: www.lta.org.uk/ Coaches-coaching-assistants/ Aegon-Coach-of-the-Year-Awards/

I have had many problems to deal with since my last report a few months ago. I have been able to resolve many housing issues for local residents but some are ongoing. I have major concerns about the state of the car park at one of the residential homes in Shepshed that is in total disrepair and puts residents at this home at risk when leaving and arriving. It is something that I am keen to get resolved and will be working with other councillors from all parties to see if a solution can be arrived at quickly. Myself and other Shepshed Labour councillors have been working with the Community Planning Group in Shepshed to help set up a local food bank for local Shepshed residents that require short term help. Whilst I applaud the efforts from local Shepshed people in working to set up a food bank in our town it angers me that we even need one, and the finger points strongly at the current Conservative and Liberal Democrat Government for removing the vital safety net that we all may require some day. I was also very surprised to see that the Conservative-run Charnwood Borough Council increased the council tax for Shepshed which in turn has forced the Town Council to increase the council tax to local Shepshed residents in this year’s council tax bills. Although it is only a small increase it goes against the promises made by the

Conservatives to have no council tax rises; also at the same time Charnwood Borough Council have seen fit to hit hard working low income families and the poorest disabled and most vulnerable with a whopping council tax increase and, when added onto the bedroom tax, it can easily push the most vulnerable and those that can least can afford it over the edge. I feel it is my duty to inform Shepshed residents about the disarray at the Shepshed Town Council. Since the middle of 2013 four Conservative councillors have resigned from their position. These councillors have failed to honour their term of office, for various reasons, and this can only be bad for Shepshed and local democracy. I wanted to conclude my spring update by carrying on from where my fellow Labour councillor left off about dog fouling in a recent issue of the Shepshed Eye. I myself have had many complaints about dog fouling over the last few months, something that I have contacted the dog warden at Charnwood Borough council about several times. I would like to also say that people should always clear up their dog mess and not leave it for others as it is dangerous to health. I am always happy to help with any problem that you have please don’t hesitate to contact me via the Shepshed Branch Labour Party or email or telephone direct. The Shepshed Labour Party hold regular monthly surgeries at the Town Council office in Shepshed on the second Saturday of each month. We also carry out walking surgeries now the weather is better dates will be announced in the local press.

I

n my role as a Borough Councillor I am always on hand to try and resolve any concerns you may have about services provided by Charnwood Borough Council.

ANNUAL COUNCIL MEETING

Held on Monday 12th May Cllr Paul Day was elected as Mayor for the forthcoming year, Cllr Day represents Anstey and Cllr Ron Jukes was elected Deputy Mayor, Cllr Jukes represents Outwoods. I have been appointed to the following Committees, Licensing (Vice-Chairman), Performance Scrutiny Panel and Policy Scrutiny Group.

PLANNING

Charnwood Planning committee considered 2 planning applications on land off Hathern Road, between Boundary Way/ Countrymans Way and the M1 at their meeting on 29th May. The Committee approved officer’s recommendation to refuse the first application (P/13/1641/2) for 270 dwellings. The developer refused to have a dialogue with the Planning department over various queries and has taken the planning application straight to the Planning Inspectorate. In view of this stalemate situation and with the rapidly approaching 13 weeks deadline for approval or rejection the Planning Committee had no alternative but to go with officer’s recommendation to refuse. Charnwood will defend this decision. The reason for refusal is on highway grounds; my concern is that should the highway concerns be addressed then approval will be issued.. The Clerk to Shepshed Town Council had invited the developer to present their plans to the Town Council but got nowhere. I and your other Borough Councillors sought to set up a public meeting with the developer in Shepshed in order that residents could view the plans but met with a blank refusal. The second was for an area of land very near to the above application to provide a Creation of public open space (P/13/1641/2). The

Committee went with officer’s recommendation to approve. As an observer, I am not the Ward Councillor, I felt that this should have been attached to the above application for 270 dwellings and refused. The Chairman of the Town Council, Cllr. Joan Tassell and the Ward Councillor for Shepshed East, Cllr. Claire Poole spoke against these applications. An application to demolish a bungalow at 62 Iveshead Road to develop the land at the rear for 103 dwellings (P/14/0777/2) has just been lodged with Charnwood. I have booked the Glenmore Centre on 20th June, 7.00pm, to enable residents to discuss and look at the plans.

LICENSING COMMITTEE

At a recent meeting a discussion took place regarding Park Homes Fees Policy, recent legislation which came out in 2013 gives more protection for Mobile Homes owners, (this does not cover touring caravan sites) The legal framework within which site and home owners operate has developed in a piecemeal fashion. There were attempts to strengthen the rights of mobile home owners in 2004 and 2006, but concerns around malpractice in the park homes sector persists. These concerns focus on complaints around unfair fees and charges, poor standards of maintenance, and site owners obstructing the ability of home owners to sell. The age profile of mobile home owners tends to make it difficult for them to assert their rights when dealing with unscrupulous site operators. It was agreed that the Initial Licence Fee be set at £26.86 and the Annual Fee of £13.01 per pitch which should cover the cost for officer’s time to enable better regulation of Park Home sites in compliance with the Mobile Homes (Amendment) Act 2013. The second item for discussion at this meeting was Hackney Carriage Vehicle Intended Use Policy, concerns had been

FRIDAY 20TH JUNE AT 7PM GLENMORE CENTRE THORPE ROAD SHEPSHED This is a public meeting in order that residents can view the plans concerning the proposed development of 103 dwellings behind the existing properties on Iveshead Road. This involves the demolition of 62 Iveshead Road to provide access to this land. Town Councillors and Borough Councillors will be on hand to discuss the implications of this development and listen to residents views. The meeting will be chaired by Cllr Christine Radford.

SHEPSHED TOWN COUNCIL INVITES LOCAL GROUPS & ORGANISATIONS TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE For an application form please contact: Brenda Snape, 47A Charnwood Road, Shepshed, LE12 9QE, Tel. 01509 508872 Closing date for return of application forms Tuesday 1st July 2014 (Together with an up to date balance sheet) raised by officers that some Taxi Drivers, who have obtained licences in other Authorities were working in Charnwood. A known driver, who had his licence revoked by Charnwood and subsequently obtained a Licence in another Authority, was working in Charnwood. At the moment nothing can be done about it. Charnwood can only check Taxis and their drivers for safety compliance if their licence has been issued by Charnwood. It was agreed by the Committee that upon the issuing of the licence the drivers would sign a declaration to predominantly work in the Borough and it was hoped that other Authorities would adopt this policy.

MAINTENANCE OF OPEN SPACES

Charnwood has recently moved its maintenance contract to a new award-winning company called Quadron. The contract is worth £14 million over the next 10 years and is expected to save the Council around £90,000 per year. The Clerk to Shepshed Town Council and I had a meeting with an officer from Charnwood to look at an area in Shepshed (Stableford Close) which had been an area of concern for some time and had been worked on by the new organisation. It was explained to us, that under this new contract, the same team would be cutting the grass, trimming the bushes and litter picking at the same

time, rather than having 2 teams as previously. I must admit this seems a better policy and we were impressed at how much better Stableford Close looked. If residents have concerns about areas please get in touch.

TREE PRESERVATION ORDERS

I would like to thank residents who contacted me regarding trees they wished to see preserved or trees which were of concern to them. I am working with officers at Charnwood to resolve these matters.

ANNUAL REPORTS

At the Parish Meeting (Shepshed Town Council) which was held on the 14th May I submitted my annual report as Borough Councillor for Shepshed West Ward outlining my work, Committees and Outside Bodies upon which I represent the Borough. A copy of this report, together with other Borough Councillors reports can be obtained at the Town Council offices. I continue to hold a monthly surgery in the Town Council offices with other Conservative Councillors from 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month (except December.)

COUNTY COUNCILLOR

CHRISTINE RADFORD T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com

s your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal, with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council.

funding in 2015/16. Whilst the final allocations are not expected to be announced until June, the consultation indicates an additional £17.2m in school funding for Leicestershire.

The Annual meeting of the County Council was held on the 21st May at which the new Chairman and Vice-Chairman were elected. The Chairman is Mr. Bill Boulter who represents Hinckley and Mr. David Snartt who represents Bradgate. I have been appointed on to the Children and Families Overview Scrutiny Committee, Development and Regulatory Board and am the County Spokesperson (for the Conservatives) on the Combined Fire Authority.

Significant progress has been made with County partners in Leicestershire Police in responding to children and young people who go missing from home and particularly those who go missing from care. New guidance and specific training has resulted in a reduction of over 50% of children and young children who go missing.

CATHEDRAL GARDENS

Mr. Nick Rushton (County Council Leader) gave an update of the project which is nearing completion in Leicester City. The project has been led by the Cathedral Quarter Partnership Board, chaired by the Bishop of Leicester on which Sir Peter Soulsby and Nick Rushton both sit. The successful partnership is working effectively to develop the Gardens, the King Richards III Visitor Centre and the reinterment of King Richard’s remains. The County Council are a full partner in this collaboration along with the City Council, the University of Leicester, The Diocese and the Cathedral.

CHILDREN AND FAMILY SERVICES

The Lead Member for Children and Family Services reported on various issues, one of which was the recent opening of the Ashmount Special School which is situated on Thorpe Hill in Loughborough, I am sure some of Shepshed’s residents will benefit from this much improved facility. Following pressure over a number of years to deliver fair funding for Leicestershire schools, which for far too long have had one of the lowest funding levels per pupil in the country. The Department for Education announced that Leicestershire will benefit from £350m of additional school

Partnership working has also resulted in Counties work to support the most ‘troubled’ families through Supporting Leicestershire Families service, which has now been in place for just over a year. During that time 338 families have been supported by 51 Family Support Workers who are based in localities across Leicestershire. As a result of the intensive support provided, domestic violence and incidents of anti-social behaviour have reduced, children are attending and achieving in school and parents are now in employment. Part of my role on the Children and Families Scrutiny Committee involves visiting family support workers around the County. This is a recent addition to my work in ensuring our ‘Children in Care’ are well provided for.

PLANNING

I have had meetings with County Highways in respect of planning applications in Shepshed, the most recent being the demolition of 62 Iveshead Road to allow access to the rear to enable 103 properties to be developed. The Clerk to Shepshed Town Council together with the Chairman are always invited to these meetings and I am pleased to report that the Borough Ward Councillor, Councillor Claire Poole was able to attend.

COUNTY HIGHWAYS FORUM FOR CHARNWOOD Was held on 27th May, I reported two items of concerns for officers of the County to address, the first

Chairman of Council (Cllr Joan Tassell) and the Vice Chairman of Council (Cllr Barry Perkins) taken just before the Shepshed’s Annual Parish Meeting held on 21st May 2014.

SHEPSHED BMX REVISED DATE OF SUNDAY 17TH AUGUST IS PLANNED FOR THE BMX LAUNCH DAY

being the lack of replacement to the white lines in various areas around Shepshed. I was promised that these would be dealt with well over 6 months ago, and to date nothing has happened. One of the main areas of concern is the mini roundabout at the junction of Leicester Road with Fairway Road South. The second issue I took was the inconsistency regarding dropped kerbs, where house owners have requested permission to have a dropped kerb in front of the their property to allow them to pull a motor vehicle off of the highway and been refused, when next door had been given permission – perhaps in some cases a few years ago – and informed that the criteria has changed. I have asked that a report be brought back to this Forum explaining the criteria.

BETTER PLACES FUNDING

I am pleased to report that County have supported an application submitted by the Town Team for £10,000. This funding scheme will identify suitable businesses who wish to improve their shop fronts. The businesses will need to work with members of the Town Team (a walk around the centre of members was due to take place on 2nd June) who will identify and discuss with businesses who will

need to obtain quotations for the work. County/Town Team will offer up to a maximum of 50% for the work. The businesses have the work carried out and submit the invoice as proof of the work.

CHANGE OF AGE RANGE CONSULTATION

I attended a meeting on Tuesday 20th May called by the Chairs and Heads of the schools in Shepshed and Belton to discuss and consult about the Change of Age Range with effect from September 2016. This proposal is coming from the schools themselves not County and as such I went along as an observer.

ANNUAL REPORTS

At the Parish Meeting which was held on 14th May I submitted my annual report as County Councillor for Shepshed outlining my work, Committees, and the Outside Bodies upon which I represent the County. A copy of this report can be obtained at the Town Council offices or I can let you have a copy. I hold a monthly surgery at the Council Offices in Shepshed between 10-11am on the last Saturday of every month (except December).

fter a period of warm and sunny weather I am writing this on a rainy and thundery day. Let’s hope all the bad weather is behind us for the second Shepshed Show on Saturday 21st June. I know the organisers are working hard to make this year’s event even bigger than the 2013 show, which was excellent. I wish everyone the very best with the final preparations and look forward to seeing many of you there. Earlier this month I met with the Chairman and other representatives of Action Cerebral Palsy to discuss the Steps charity in Loughborough. It was good to see Trish from Steps there too. Steps is a fantastic charity in Shepshed which, as you probably know, was started in 1994 by four families who recognised the benefits gained by their children from conductive education. This type of education means children with motor disabilities can develop in the same way as their able-bodied peers. This is particularly important for children with Cerebral Palsy and can have an amazing impact on their lives. I will be following up on the issues we discussed at our meeting with the Department for Health and the Minister for Disabilities. I recently attended a lunch at the Charnwood Road Baptist Church. I think the event and my remarks are reported elsewhere in this edition of the Shepshed Eye but let me just add how much I enjoyed meeting everyone. And I would like to thank the chefs and everyone else who worked so hard to provide such a delicious lunch especially the pie!

I am aware that a number of local primary schools are consulting on changing their age ranges. Clearly this has implications for other schools in and around Shepshed and parents and families will have questions which I am sure will be dealt with at the various meetings. As I worked with the schools in Loughborough, Quorn and Barrow on their age range changes, including liaising with the Department for Education, I have offered any assistance and contacts to the Shepshed schools if these changes do go ahead. Finally I recently spoke at a Dying Matters event held at John Storer House in Loughborough recently. As I said at the event although no one wants to think ahead to their death it is important to discuss plans and make preparations to make things easier for those left behind. Organised by Suzanne Buckeridge (who I last saw singing on stage at St Botolph’s in March!) and who is now an independent funeral celebrant in our area this was an informal event which allowed people to gather all sorts of information. Despite the subject matter, it was a relaxed occasion and I hope will be repeated to mark next year’s Dying Matters week.

LOUGHBOROUGH MP PRAISES DEDICATION OF LOCAL PRIORY GROUP STAFF Loughborough MP, Nicky Morgan, has commended the commitment and expertise of staff at Priory’s local Charnwood Lodge site, part of the Group’s specialist Craegmoor division. During a recent visit to the site, Mrs Morgan had the opportunity to meet with staff and patients to get a firsthand perspective of the tailored services provided locally for people with a range of mental health problems and learning disabilities. Commenting on her visit, Mrs Morgan said, “I welcomed the opportunity to see for myself the excellent standards of care and services provided for often the most vulnerable in society. Speaking with residents, it is evident that they recognise and value the quality of care they receive from a dedicated group of expert staff and I was very much struck by the warm and supportive environment on site.”

Charnwood Lodge’s Service Manager, Dawn Newby, added, “We are delighted that Mrs Morgan took the time out of her understandably busy schedule to visit us today, and her recognition of the quality of care delivered by our staff is testament to their commitment and professionalism in the delivery of bespoke care for all our residents.”

On Thursday 24th April Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan held wide ranging discussions with senior Network Rail Engineers at the offices of EPS UK Ltd in Loughborough. EPS UK demonstrated a new type of substation for use adjacent to railway tracks providing power to locomotives. The substations could be used on Midland Main Line and other major rail electrification projects over the next five years. The substation is based on a new design developed by Network Rail and will encourage more UK content including manufacturing in the East Midlands. EPS UK described ambitious plans that, if successful, would enable the Company to expand into the

Rail Electrification Sector. “We have already provided extensive technical consultancy services to Network Rail we see the manufacture of these substations to be the next logical step” said EPS Managing Director Brian McKean. Nicky said, “As Loughborough’s MP I worked with MPs on all sides and lobbied everyone from the Prime Minister, Chancellor and then Transport Secretary, to secure the electrification of the Midland Main Line which was announced in July 2012. My meeting with EPS shows just how many local businesses and suppliers will be able to benefit from this major Government investment in our local infrastructure.”

‘INTO THE VALLEY’ ROTARY DONATION

"Into the Valley...." was a line from The Charge of the Light Brigade' that two Shepshed Charnwood Rotarians, Paul Miles and Peter Hickling, did not expect to hear on their recent visit to Sutton Bonington Primary School. After all, they were there to donate money to further expand the facilities for the pupils to grow their own produce.

Listening to several poetry recitals from a range of authors was a real treat as each one was read with clarity and emotion and, even more surprisingly, no prompts. This was part of an inter schools event which the Rotarians were lucky enough to be invited to share.

The money came from part of the collection taken locally by Santa and the Rotary float and both Mark and Peter thanked all who had contributed. For further information about your local Rotary Club please e-mail rotarysc@hotmail.co.uk Rotarian Peter Hickling (left) and Head Teacher Mark Brumwell

After presentation of various awards and a rendering of 'Albert and the Lion', the assembly drew to a close far too quickly. The Rotarians left knowing that they had helped, in some small way, a very happy and industrious school.

OPEN BOX PROMOTIONS RAISES £964.05 FOR DLR AIR AMBULANCE

President David Fountain (left) and Rodger Hutchinson from the Rotary Club of Shepshed Charnwood received some valuable training in construction techniques when they visited the Hathern C.of E. primary school.

Open Box Promotions Ltd, the home of Your Local and Community Eye magazines, took part in the Big Business Challenge competing against other business’ to try and raise as much money as possible for DLR Air Ambulance in just a few weeks! In addition to our ‘Wear it Yellow’ day, On Friday 14th February Andy from Open Box Promotions did a sponsored walk from Leicester Forest East to Coalville to raise much needed funds for Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance service.

They were instructed in the finer points of Lego block building by the members of the school council. These pupils are elected by their peers to discuss issues and ideas from their own classes, and then feed back any decisions made. One such idea was to purchase a quantity of building blocks that could be used by the school to help develop social and communication skills whilst also having some fun.

The Rotary club were pleased to be able to donate a sum of money to this worthwhile project. The money came from part of the collection taken locally by Santa and the Rotary float and Head Teacher Stephen Dunn and council coordinator Rachel Abbott thanked all who had contributed.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

NATURAL HEALTH ACHES & PAINS

Love Your Feet! FUNGAL NAIL INFECTION

As I sit here to start writing, I am aware of my stiff neck from the spring digging in the allotment. The usual aching knees that I get at the end of each day are brought on from years of football, long distance running and old age. Together with my slipped disc, you must see that I am well qualified to talk about aches and pains. However, I still manage to have a very active life. In fact I tell my wife that I am a walking miracle! Homeopathy can be of great benefit for aches and pains regardless of their cause. The key when deciding which remedy to use is their modalities: these three remedies have their own ‘keynotes’ which you have to match up with the type of pain that you are experiencing. Bryonia 30 is helpful when pain increases with even the slightest movement, with stitching pain and worsens with change in weather. Rhus Tox 30 is indicated when the pain is better for movement, pressure or heat application, but is worse for sitting still. Ruta Grav 30 seems to act on a deeper pain, that is typically worse at night or lying down and if the pain is less during the daytime.

Submitted by Sally Prytherch Hinds Feet Foot Care T: 07806786616 E: hindsfeetfootcare@gmail.com W: www.hindsfeetfootcare.co.uk

It can be that more than one remedy is indicated so it is fine to alternate them. Take up to 4 doses a day (dissolved under the tongue) until the pain subsides. Finally if the problem seems to have started after a bump or fall take a few doses of Arnica 30 and then assess the situation. All of these natural supplements are highly effective both for the initial pain relief and repairing damaged tissue and joints. Finally, I would like to recommend a couple of manipulative techniques that I have found very helpful. The Alexander Technique is a gentle system that reprograms your movement through classes that teach you to move in a much more natural way. The treatment that I use on a regular basis now is Bowen Technique. This is a gentle muscle manipulation that releases pain and re-aligns the body. By Ken Teppin (M.C.P.H)

HERE COMES THE SUN We all know by now what damage over exposure to UV rays can do to our skin, but have you considered the damage it can do to your eyes? Sunburn isn’t just limited to your skin, your eyes can get burnt too. Over-exposure to ultraviolet light, such as a day at the beach without proper eye protection, can cause a temporary but painful burn to the surface of the eye, similar to sunburn on the skin. Whilst this sounds particularly unpleasant, it is the risk of developing cataracts that makes

25

over exposure so dangerous for your eyes. The damage occurs by too much UVA and UVB light entering the eye. Your eye needs light to work, but in particularly sunny conditions, this means an increase of harmful rays hitting the retina. The main way to protect your eyes against damage is to wear sunglasses which can filter out the UVA and UVB rays, whilst still allowing sufficient light in for you to see. Not all sunglasses have lenses that are of a high enough quality to do this, so it is important that you check the lenses are 100% UV filters.

Fungal nail infection often starts as a skin infection (athletes foot) and creeps on slowly and unnoticed. Like athletes foot it thrives in warm, damp, dark conditions. It is characterised by discolouration of the nail which usually appears yellow, brown or white in colour and nails can become thickened, brittle and porous. It can be a huge source of embarrassment especially in the summer months when choice of footwear would be sandals or open toe shoes. The condition often starts as a small patch in the large toe nail and can eventually affect all nails if untreated. Treatment usually requires a two pronged approach of removing as much of the diseased nail as possible and treating topically with a lacquer or liquid painted onto the nail regularly to inhibit growth of the fungus. Various

And it’s not just light from the sun reflected light from surfaces such as snow or water can intensify the amount of UV being absorbed by your eyes, therefore. sunglasses are vital if you are in these conditions on a frequent basis. As with all eye care, you need to consider the purpose of your sunglasses. Wrap around styles might be better for winter sports, where as tinted lenses could prove to be better for general wear outdoors. Either way, looking after your eyes and protecting them against the sun is a vital part of your optical care. So whilst you’re stocking up on suntan lotion to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, consider your eyes too. After all, donning a pair of trendy sunglasses doesn’t just protect your eyes, its bang on trend too! Spectacle wearers can also enjoy the benefits of sunglasses. If you are wanting sunglasses for driving, or perhaps reading on holiday, or simply to replace your ordinary glasses in the sunshine, prescription sunglasses are also

products are available from the local pharmacy. Consistent application of products and filing is key and it can take up to eighteen months to eradicate depending on severity of the infection and rate of nail re-growth. Professional help may be needed to remove the diseased nail. Oral medication may sometimes be prescribed by the GP but is known to have side effects. Like athletes foot, fungal nail infection can spread from person to person, so good foot hygiene such as separate towels is important and early identification will mean a shorter length of time for treatment . KIDS ZONE

BETHANY AND FRIENDS DONATE TO CHARITY

The two friends had a laugh about the amount of clothes and trinkets they had and how they hated to throw things away.

Summer had almost arrived and Bethany was emptying her house ready to give it a good clean, one by one she moved everything out into the garden so she could wipe down the walls, mop the floors and polish the windows till they sparkled.

Daniel Dog was walking past on his afternoon stroll when he heard the laughing, “What’s going on here then?” He said “Someone moving house?!”

She hopped out with a basket of hats and scarves then back in again, then she hopped out with a box of baking trays, then back in again. This went on for quite some time! Christie cat had heard the rattling of boxes and popped her head over the wall to find out what was going on. She could barely see Bethany over the huge pile of boxes!

Christie and Bethany explained what was going on and why they were laughing. “You don’t need to throw things you don’t use anymore away, have you considered donating it to charity?”

Bethany was just coming out of the house with another basket of hats when Christie asked her what she was doing. “I’m emptying my house so I can clean it,” Said Bethany “But I didn’t realise I had so much stuff! I don’t remember buying most of it and I’m sure I haven’t worn half of these hats!” Christie replied “It’s good to empty rooms out sometimes, I really need to do my house. I always find things I forgot I had or that I don’t use and are just taking up space”. “I don’t think it will all fit back in!” Joked Bethany. “I’m sure this can’t all me mine!”

Last Months Competition Winners Well done to Helen North winning the kids competition and Janet Spendlove winning the adults competition. Your prizes are on their way!

Daniel went on to explain that there were many charity shops in the town who needed second hand clothes and trinkets. He explained that they sell them to help raise money for good causes. Bethany though that this was a brilliant idea and so once she had finished cleaning, Christie and Daniel helped her to sort out what she wanted to keep and what she wanted to donate. The following day the friends all took Bethany’s donations to the local charity shop who were very happy to receive them. Bethany felt very happy to have made a difference to others by giving away things she didn’t want any more. Well done Bethany, giving to charity is a very kind thing to do. Can you think of anything you don’t use any more, or any clothes you have grown out of that you could donate? Why not ask your parents to help you sort your bedroom out and take some items down to a charity shop?

Why don’t clams donate to charity? They’re too shellfish! Last night, one of the presenters on Children in Need said, “Pick up your phone and pledge.” I’m still sitting here, with the phone in one hand and a can of furniture polish in the other, wondering how that’s supposed to help. Today, a man knocked my front door. He said he was collecting for the local swimming pool... So I gave him two buckets of water.

QUICK CRAFT PLASTIC SPOON PUPPETS

Support Your local charities

YOU WILL NEED:

Support your local charities, provide them with some cash.

• Coloured paper • Glue • Tape or glue gun • Plastic spoons

29

Show your generosity. Come on and make a splash. Your caring side you’ll surely have to show. So let us see the colour of your dough.

HOW YOU DO IT: • We used strips of coloured paper: two 1/2- by 11-inch ones for each leg, and two 1/4- by 11-inch ones for each arm. Help your child glue the ends of 2 strips together, forming a right angle (A). • Then show them how to alternately fold the strips over each other (B and C), creating springy, accordionlike folds. When they reach the ends of the strips, glue them together. Repeat for each arm and leg. • With tape or a low-temperature glue gun (an adult’s job), attach the completed limbs to a plastic spoon, then add a paper mouth, eyes, and hair. For curly hair, just roll paper strips around a pencil. Allow the glue to dry, and the spoonfolk are ready to play.

Charity begins at home, or so they say. Where there’s a will you know there’s certainly a way. Don’t go and waste your money, let it do some good. Surely now your heart’s not made of wood. It gives us all a glow of satisfaction.. Just to see philanthropy in action. Come loosen up your purse strings. Do your bit. And show yourself to be a generous Brit. By Chris Rose
