CHARNWOOD SCOUTS DISTRICT ADVENTURE WEEKEND Nearly 300 Beavers and over 70 Cubs and Scouts went to Oaks in Charnwood Scout Campsite for a weekend of exciting adventures. The Beavers where there for an action packed fun day, taking part in a fantastic range of activities, from parachute games to the Black Hole. Aleck from Rothley Beavers said “I loved the black hole, it was pitch black and I just went round and round.” Whilst the Cubs and Scouts went out on a six mile challenge hike around Charnwood Forest. Going through various checkpoints and facing the various different challenges along the way, such as making a capital T out of blocks, passing through a hoop without touching the sides and map reading. Max from Barrow Scouts said “We had to try and go through the hoop without touching the sides, it was hard to do, but it was fun!” Once all the activities had finished the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts had a camp fire, and 54 Beavers where invested into the movement. The Scouts also had the opportunity to cook their own dinners on open fires. To read more about the weekend and see the photos and video visit the website: www.charnwoodscouts.org.uk

SHEPSHED HISTORY SOCIETY 14th October saw the Shepshed History Society enjoy an exceptional and highly entertaining talk on the Suffragette movement. Lynne and Mike Spicer came dressed in period costume brandishing the suffragette banners as well as a tape playing the suffragettes song. The colours of their sashes being explained as purple for loyalty to the crown, white for purity and green for hope. And then Lynne went on to explain the history of the movement in detail. To begin with it was a quiet orderly movement but when there was little response from the government, then they began a more serious attempt at making everyone sit up and take notice. And so Lynne went onto explain all about their riotous behaviour, even Calke Abbey had to employ night watchmen in order to protect the estate from any damage. Prison experiences were then explained especially the force feeding which in some cases damaged their lives for good. Then Lynne went onto name several famous suffragettes and a Leicestershire lady Alice Hawkins was a most notable one. Wyoming in America was the first place to allow women the vote in 1869, followed by New Zealand in 1893. But wasn't until 1918 that Britain allowed our women the vote but even then they had to be over 30. It was a very thought provoking talk done with great expertise but it was easily understood and thoroughly enjoyed by all the members. At the next meeting on 11th November the group will be entertained by Mr. Ray Bradshaw who will sing some first world war songs as well as give the explanation of how they came about. There are still some spaces left for new members should you wish to join us and you will be made most welcome.

SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB SENIOR CITIZENS DINNER

NEWCROFT PRIMARY SCHOOL RATED OUTSTANDING

On Saturday 18th October Shepshed Lions Club played host to 64 Senior Citizens for a three course lunch, held at St Botolphs Church Hall. This is an annual event and a good time was had by all. During and after lunch the guests were treated to music, bingo and a raffle.

Newcroft Primary School in Trueway Drive, Shepshed has been awarded the highest Ofsted category of “Outstanding” following a recent visit by Inspectors from the organisation which regulates and inspects schools.

Nicky Morgan said “I think the school is just great and there has been clearly been a lot of hard work by everyone including Mr. Smythe, the staff , the pupils and Governors and that effort is paying off!”

The Outstanding grade is only awarded to schools considered to be highly effective in their provision and pupils’ outcomes. The rise of Newcroft as an outstanding school is highlighted even more when considering the previous Ofsted inspection in December 2012 graded the school as requiring improvement. As well as all adults contributing to the ‘caring and supportive environment’, Newcroft is now described by Ofsted as having ‘an outstanding Curriculum’.

Prospective parents, guardians or carers are encouraged to visit the school’s website at www.newcroftprimary-school.co.uk to find out more about what makes Newcroft an outstanding primary school. Visits by appointment are also welcomed.

This event costs the guests the princely sum of 50p each! The event is sponsored by Shepshed Lions Club from funds raised during the year at the annual Charity Carnival, the ever popular Santa Sleigh and other fund raising events. Lion President Bob Lilley said “this is a really enjoyable event for both the guests and the Lions members. We hope to attract senior citizens who don’t get out much to this event.” If you know of any senior citizens who may wish to come to next years event, who don’t get out much please let the Lions know. Contact Bob Lilley 01509 508265

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN It's true! Shepshed Lions Club is pleased to announce that Santa Claus has agreed to come to Shepshed again this year. Despite his busy schedule he has agreed to bring his sleigh to the town. He will tour the streets during the evenings from the 8th of December and will be at Asda Shepshed on Saturday 13th December and the Midlands CoOperative store on Saturday 20th December. Further details of the routes will be published in the local media, Shepshed Community Eye and social media nearer the time.

SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS Shepshed Community First Responders are going from strength to strength. When you consider that it is only eleven months since the First Responders became active in the town with 8 members, they now boast 25 trained community first responders. The team has also purchased more defibrillators and other equipment and have now set up a team in Loughborough. The team are working as one team but covering both Loughborough and Shepshed. They work in conjunction with East Midlands Ambulance Service.

‘DECK THE (CHURCH) HALL WITH BOUGHS OF HOLLY’ St. Botolph’s Church Hall (Shepshed) is going to be ‘decked’ for the Victorian Christmas Market to be held on Saturday the 29th November. Those who came last year really appreciated the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Stallholders added to the Victorian theme with period costume. The doors will open at 10 o’clock and Santa will arrive soon afterwards, bringing gifts to hand out to the children whilst listening to their requests. It is a certainty that people will be able to tick a number of items off their Christmas presents’ lists as there are a wide variety of stalls selling an even wider assortment of quality gift ideas. Many of these will be beautifully handcrafted, including sweets and Christmas decorations. As always, the expert bakers and cooks from St. Botolph’s congregation will sell delicious cakes and preserves. In addition people always enjoy browsing through the second-hand books, and finding a bargain amongst the toys.

The Community responders are all volunteers and receive no public funding and purchase defibrillators, kit bags and other necessary equipment from donations, sponsorship and fund raising events.

Everyone likes a game of chance and festively decorated bottles on the bottle tombola are bound to be very popular; naturally, this will be accompanied by other games, all offering a chance to win prizes! The biggest prizes are reserved for the Church’s Christmas Prize Draw: a Superb Christmas hamper is the first prize, with an e-reader for second prize, and the third prize being a bottle of Champagne.

If you wish to become a member of the team or would like to sponsor their activity or make a donation please contact Bob Lilley 01509 508265 or by email at thelilleys15@gmail.com

The Christmas Market is a great social occasion with visitors sitting enjoying the lunches and drinks, bacon butties are always popular! The event ends at 2.00pm.

The head teacher, Mr. Alex Smythe, said that he was “…absolutely delighted with the judgement which is due to the hard work of the pupils, staff, governors and parents over the past school year”. Mr Smythe added, “I am immensely proud of the school and the journey we have begun. To be recognised as an outstanding school in every single area of the Ofsted framework is a fantastic tribute to the teaching staff and everyone at the school … but we will continue our relentless drive to improve still further because this school has such an exciting future.” Mr. Bill Gilmour, Chair of Governors, paid tribute to Mr. Smythe’s leadership as a major contributor to the much improved Ofsted rating. He said “As recognised by Ofsted, Mr. Smythe is an ‘exceptionally skilled Head teacher’ who has had a huge influence upon whole school community at Newcroft, bringing everyone together to live out a shared vision. As Governors, we are delighted with his impact. Over the last 12 months, he has focussed our efforts and encouraged excellence from everyone. This result is very good for the children of Shepshed.” Prior to the Ofsted announcement, Newcroft recently held an open day which was attended by Nicky Morgan, MP for Loughborough.

PHOTO: MP Nicky Morgan, together with Molly Battye and Edward Culpin. Alex Smythe said “we had a brilliant Open Day and we had a special visitor, Rt. Hon. Nicky Morgan in her capacity as MP for Loughborough. She was ably shown around by school Ambassadors Molly Battye and Edward Culpin.” Mr Smythe said “how proud the School and Ambassadors were at showing our local MP the school environment”.

SHEPSHED COMMUNITY NATIVITY The event is to be a community celebration of the traditional Christmas story, featuring a costumed enactment by well-known townsfolk. The pageant will be supported by a narration, choral music, poetry and dance. There will of course be carols for everyone to join in. St Botolph’s Church will be the venue, with the Nativity planned to begin at 7.30pm on Friday 5th December. The event will conclude with an affirmation of community, representing many aspects of the life of Shepshed. Please come along to pack the church for a memorable start to the festive season.

The club has been active preparing for the Young Writer Competition in which ball Shepshed Schools are involved and for the musical concerts too involving local schools. Most meetings are to do with planning the club activities and we have also welcomed speakers on a variety of topics – most recently the matter of Solar panels. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Shepshed & the surrounding area and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I

get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

PLANTING BARE-ROOT HEDGING & TREES

T

he weather has finally turned autumnal after a long sunny summer. The leaves on the trees have been taking on burnished copper, gold and ruby tints and are now being shed from the branches ready for the onset of winter. Once the dormant season is upon us it’s a good time to transplant bare-root plants – those which have been raised in a field and then lifted & the soil removed. The added bonus of bare-root plants is that they are much cheaper than container grown plants. Autumn is a good time to plant them as there’s time for them to settle and establish before the warmth of the spring comes. Trees & shrubs are available bare-root and from November onwards they’ll be offered in garden centres, nurseries and online. As the plants are dormant there’s not much to look at but when selecting plants look for undamaged branches & bark to ensure the plants are fit and healthy. My garden has tall boundary hedges of Privet and the garden itself is subdivided by Beech hedges and trained fruit trees, all of which were sourced as bare-root plants. Fruit trees are the typical bare-root trees on offer in garden centres. Apples, Plums and Pears are easy to find. Choose a variety based on the crop, size, shape and pollination requirements (info will be on the label). Ornamental trees like Rowans, Hawthorns and Acers are popular too, choose a variety that will grow to a suitable size and give interest in flowers, foliage or berries.

Bundles of hedging plants known as ‘Whips’, are available from November to March. Hedges are great for defining a boundary, screening a building or dividing a garden into sections. There are lots of varieties to choose from. For formal edging there are evergreens like Box and Yew and for taller boundary hedges, semievergreens like Privet or Beech are suitable. Trimmed twice a year these can be kept neat & tidy. Native hedging typically consists of a mix of deciduous varieties which when planted together provides an ideal habitat for wildlife. A traditional mix includes Haw & Black Thorn, Hazel, Dogwood and Wild Rose & Crab Apple. Deciduous mixes are less formal and can be trimmed once a year or less frequently for an informal look. Bare-root plants are pretty easy to plant. Choose a day which is frost free and when the soil is not waterlogged. Keep the roots of the new plants cool and moist (not wet) until you are ready to plant. HOW TO PLANT A BARE-ROOT TREE: 1. Turn the ground adding plenty of compost & fertiliser . 2. Dig a whole large enough to accommodate the spread of the roots. 3. Place the tree in the hole ensuring the roots will be covered and the base of the tree is at the right level. Fan out the roots. 4. Place a tree stake alongside the stem & between the roots. Tap in to give the tree support & add a tree tie. 5. Back fill the hole, firming the soil and water the area thoroughly.

HOW TO PLANT A BARE-ROOT HEDGE: 1. Turn the ground adding plenty of compost & fertiliser. 2. Rake & level the soil. 3. Mark out a straight line & lay the hedging ‘whips’ along it, at the appropriate spacing. 4. Create a slit trench (push the spade in & rock forward to create a slit shaped opening along the length). 5. Fan out the roots & place in the trench, firming in well. 6. For a double row repeat the process at the required spacing. 7. Water in thoroughly. The trees/hedging may need watering in the spring-summer after planting, then after a year or two the trees or hedging will be established and growing strongly. As November comes to an end, thoughts turn towards the festive season. Next month I’ll be looking at bringing elements of the garden indoors to create seasonal wreaths and decorations for Christmas using foliage, seed heads, cones and berries. If your borders need rejuvenating, your garden needs a fresh new look or you are looking for design ideas, a Consultation or Planting Plan may be just what you need. Take a look at my website for details of the services I offer www.belgrierson.co.uk or call me on 07506 750250.

DR MATTHEW O’CALLAGHAN

UPDATE ON SHEPSHED

T

hree years ago I was selected as Labour’s Candidate to fight the next General Election in Loughborough. People liked the idea I had strong local connections with the area and was not a London politician in pursuit of a ministerial career. I went to school in Ashby and worked for Fisons in Loughborough. I’ve been a professor, a business consultant, a county and borough councillor, a governor in primary, secondary and special schools and have worked in Universities, the NHS and in business. I’ve lived and worked in Belgium, Latin America, Japan and of course Loughborough. These last three years I’ve met getting towards 10,000 people either through knocking on doors or in the various meetings and events I attend. People have told me that: They feel worse off - Wages and pensions have risen far less than prices And that Public Services are worse - Longer NHS waiting times, cuts to public services etc And yet despite all these sacrifices: The national debt has got worse. It has increased by 46% since the 2010 election. Something has gone wrong. The Conservatives promised to eliminate the deficit by the end of this Parliament - they haven’t. They have borrowed more in the last 4 years than Labour did in its 13 years of office. Just one of a string of broken promises including that of cutting immigration, no VAT rise, no reorganisation of the NHS etc. We have had the most right wing Government since the war. Even Margaret Thatcher resisted selling off the Royal Mail. The Liberal Democrats have supported all these policies, including tax breaks for the rich while imposing the bedroom tax on the poor and a broken promise on tuition fees which has meant massive debts for hundreds of thousands of students.

NEW HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS IN AND AROUND SHEPSHED Charnwood Borough Council’s Core Strategy is still going through the process for approval with the ‘Examination in Public’ starting on the 9th December. I have filed objections to the Core Strategy and have asked to speak at these hearings. I am particularly opposed to the proposals for 3,500 houses on the Garendon Estate Area and also 500 more houses to the West of Shepshed. I am on the committee of the Garendon Park and Countryside Protection Group. We do need more houses but the right type of houses in the right place. In the last three years almost 400 houses have received planning permission in Shepshed with another 485 looking for approval. There are brownfield sites for around 500 more homes within Shepshed itself without the need to build on greenfield sites. Recently the Council received a planning application for 3,500 homes on the Garendon Estate Area which would require only a single meeting of the Plans Committee to approve the proposal. I have written to the Council opposing the application on the following grounds: The application pre-empts the Core Strategy, it would add to existing traffic congestion and it would worsen existing flooding problems. There is not enough infrastructure contained in the development plan for public services eg schools, health etc. There is not enough neighbouring employment for 3,200 houses. The development would spoil an outstanding landscape, reduce the amount of quality agricultural land and harm the biodiversity of the area. The development would detract from the historic setting of the Garendon Park and Buildings and would restrict current Leisure use of the Garendon Area. Finally the development would harm the separate identities of Hathern and Shepshed (it would only be a field away from both settlements) and would remove the Green Wedge around Loughborough.

CHRISTINE RADFORD s your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal, with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council.

September it was decided to cut parking fees from April 2015. Parking a car will cost £3 per day on weekdays and £4 per day at weekends and Bank Holidays, which is a saving of £1 on current prices.

PLANNING – BIFFA WASTE SERVICES – the application under

The cost of season tickets is also coming down with the cost of an annual season ticket being reduced by £25 to £90 per year. Concessionary season tickets for the over-65’s will cost £50 per year, a saving of £40. A season ticket for Swithland Wood will now cost £25 instead of the previous price of £35. The new season ticket prices will come into effect from Saturday 1st November 2014. These could make a good Christmas present.

section 73 to vary condition 2 of planning permission 2014/1440/02 (2014/VOCEIA/0153/LCC) at Ashby Road East was approved at the County Planning committee held on the 9th October. It was hard to find a reason to refuse due to the previous planning application already having an approval; this later application is more efficient. I asked that the traffic lights on the A512 were synchronised to enable the traffic to follow more easily. The first liaison committee for the above was held on the 22nd September, I was not able to attend as it was the day after my husband passed away and the report below has been submitted by Cllr Joan Tassell, Chairman of Shepshed Town Council. The meeting was to discuss a new planning application which had been lodged with Leicestershire County Council (LCC), for the new and improved Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) at Newhurst Quarry. Biffa have merged with MEL, Greenstar and SS Electric. It was explained that MEL/Greenstar would be the companies building and running the ERF, SSElectric would manage the energy output. Biffa themselves would only supply the waste to be burnt. The application replaces the ERF which was granted in 2012 which was a twin stacks incinerator. The modern one is only one line and has a single stack. The new facility will burn 350,000 tons of waste per year as opposed to 300,000 tons for the one already granted permission and would give a higher energy output. A new Environment Agency permit is required for the new facility. There were several concerns as to the new planning application. Traffic was one of them and the removal of the ash cover was another. The Liaison Committee were assured that there would be no extra traffic for the new installation and that the ash was not the kind that would be blown away in wind but heavier and compact as clinker. The planning application came before LCC on 9th October at County Hall and was granted with conditions. The planning application conditions and more information can be found on the LCC website.

BUSES – I am working with Nicky

Morgan MP to try to establish a bus link via Shepshed to the airport. Unfortunately we did not get anywhere with the Airport Link bus which runs from Leicester via Loughborough to the airport, but we a pursuing other avenues. An on line petition will soon be set up and a petition will be made available for residents to sign to support our endeavours to get this link established. I will then present the petition to Leicestershire County Council in February.

NICKY MORGAN spent a very enjoyable morning a little while ago at Newcroft Primary School in Shepshed. It was great to see the school in action and to hear the enthusiasm for the school from the pupils. The school has excellent facilities and a very positive atmosphere. My congratulations to all the staff, pupils, governors on their recent “Outstanding” rating from Ofsted. I have no doubt this was the result of a lot of hard work by everyone involved with the school. It was also a great privilege, as always, to attend the Rainbows Hospice Open Day. This year sees the 20th Anniversary of the founding of Rainbows Hospice. I am sure that we cannot now imagine our area without this amazing organisation. Seeing the facilities and listening to the dedicated staff is always humbling. Rainbows has changed even in the last 10 years since I came to Loughborough. In fact it is down to Rainbows that I decided I liked running – because my first race was a 5k to raise money for them. I also recently visited Shepshed businesses Meggitt and Movements UK. Both are highly successful in very different markets and it is good to see such them doing well. Just a reminder that on Friday 14th November Cllr Christine Radford and I will be hosting another Shepshed Business Forum breakfast. We hope to have a speaker from the Leicester & Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership there. If you would like to attend please let me know. The long-awaited planning application for a huge development to the west of Loughborough has now been submitted. I do realise just how strong feelings about planning applications, this one included, are. This area of Loughborough has been put forward as a development site by both Labour

and Conservative administrations at Charnwood Council. It is generally acknowledged by all the main political parties that we do need more houses both as a country and in our part of Leicestershire. Owning your own home is an important step for many of us and at present the lack of supply means house prices are rising putting home ownership out of the reach of the next generation. There are of course a variety of reasons why there are more prospective buyers – mainly because people are living independently in their own home for longer and more households are being formed. However, this is a really significant development which will change this part of Charnwood for ever. I will continue to ensure the views of all local residents are put forward to the councillors who will decide on this application. Questions about community amenities, local infrastructure and the future access to and maintenance of the Garendon Park must be properly addressed. There is just space to mention that Saturday 6th December is Small Business Saturday. This is our chance, especially in the run up to Christmas, to support our small businesses and independent shops. If you are planning a shopping trip then do have a think about buying at least one Christmas present in a shop which is not part of a national chain. We have plenty of great shops to choose from locally. And finally I would like to wish everyone involved in the forthcoming Christchurch Gilbert & Sullivan production of the Yeoman of the Guard all the very best for a highly successful production.

SHEPSHED BUSINESS FORUM BREAKFAST The Shepshed Business Forum will hosting a business breakfast event on Friday 14th November 2014, at Livio’s Restaurant in Shepshed. All local businesses and interested parties are welcome to attend!

Strategic Rail Freight Interchange - Roxhill I asked that part of the S106 agreement, a bus link is established going via Shepshed to this place of work. I also asked that improvements be carried out on the A6 for the additional traffic that this site will generate. This application will be decided by a Planning Inspector.

Following the success of the previous business breakfast in Shepshed, they are holding another. The guest speaker for the breakfast will be Narinder Singh Pooni, who is Economic Growth and Investment Officer at the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP). He will come to speak about what support the LLEP can provide local businesses. As ever, Shepshed Borough and County Councillor, Christine Radford and local MP, Nicky Morgan will be there as well.

KIDS ZONE

JACK FROST Bethany, Daniel and Christie were having a warming cup of cocoa at Bethany’s house and talking about the very cold weather they were getting. ‘I don’t really like this weather’ shivered Christie, cuddling her mug of cocoa. ‘It’s too cold to go outside and I miss being able to have my windows open.’ ‘I love this weather’ chirped in Bethany it’s so beautiful! Every morning when I wake up it’s like someone has iced the garden, white on all the tips of the grass and on every leaf’. ‘That’s Jack Frost, Bethany’ said Daniel, ‘He visits in the night and puts a white coating all over everything, he even draws the pretty patterns on the windows.’ ‘Jack Frost?’ exclaimed Bethany, ‘you mean someone actually turns it all cold and white? All on their own?’

So she sat and waited and watched a bit longer, her eyes growing heavy and tired, but still he didn’t come. Slowly and without realising it Bethany fell asleep in her chair. The next morning when she woke up, Jack Frost had indeed been and everything was crisp and white again. ‘Oh no’ said Bethany, ‘I fell asleep and missed him.’ Very sadly Bethany got up and went to pick up the tray with the sandwiches and the flask on, which she hadn’t touched the night before. But to her surprise they were gone! The flask was untouched but all that was left on the plate were crumbs! Who could have eaten them, thought Bethany, just then she noticed a frosty pattern on the window, but unlike any she had seen before. It was on the inside of the glass and looked like it said thankyou but it couldn’t………….. could it?

‘Yes, he’s magical’ said Daniel, ‘No-one’s ever seen him, he comes in the middle of the night when everyone’s asleep’. Later that day as Bethany was getting ready for bed, she decided she was going to be the first person to see Jack Frost. So she made up a flask of hot drink and put it on a tray, together with some sandwiches, just in case she got hungry and made herself comfortable in her big armchair, wrapped in a blanket, right by the window. Bethany sat and watched the sun disappear and the moon come up. It was a beautiful clear sky and she could see the stars twinkling. She sat and watched and waited but Jack Frost didn’t appear.

In summer we gathered spinning fruits of the lime Which cascaded to earth on a breeze The pink flowering chestnut brought grandeur and beauty And musical drone of the bees As autumn approached we would search out the ground And kick our way through frosted leaves We’d string-thread our conkers, the little brown beauties And keep them well oiled up our sleeves When winter arrived we would skate on the path With no thought as to what might ensue If the black-clad church verger should fall on his head Or land buttocks-down in the yew Whatever the season the trees seemed to offer A gift both to young and to old And as each year goes by we watch with a sigh As brown, green and silver turn gold.

SEE & BE SEEN… By qualified registered Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians. What’s the difference? An Optometrist (Ophthalmic Optician) is a primary health care specialist and is trained to examine the eyes to detect defects in vision, signs of injury, ocular diseases or abnormality and problems with general health. They give advice on visual problems and if necessary prescribe spectacles or contact lenses. An Optometrist studies at University for at least three years and then works in an optical practice/hospital under supervision for a year before taking their final professional exams. A Dispensing Optician is trained to dispense and fit spectacles and other optical aids, working from a prescription that the Optometrist has issued. They advise on various

types of lenses and spectacle frames, including advice on style, weight and colour. They also advise patients on how to wear and care for their spectacles and with further training, their contact lenses. A Dispensing Optician studies for three years, either two years full time at college and a year in practice under supervision or for three years day/block release whilst working full time in a practice. Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians work closely together and take into account each patient’s visual, lifestyle and vocational needs. Both Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians practising in the UK must be registered with the General Optical Council, the profession’s regulatory body. When choosing an Optometrist, look out for the letters FCOptom or MCOptom after their name. Look for the letters FBDO when choosing a Dispensing Optician. This means they are registered and adhere to high standards of clinical practice and undertake continuous educational training.
