OCT Retinal Scanner One Year On... Ryatt Optometry in the Bullring Shepshed cannot believe it was a year ago when we took delivery of our new 3D OCT retinal scanner. Patients who have had the scan have been very impressed and amazed with the diagnostic and sight saving capability of this equipment. It has allowed us to examine patients eyes more thoroughly and has enabled us to detect subtle changes in the retina as we can now scan deeper into the retinal layers. The scan is painless and has no side effects and having one done every time you have an eye examination will give us that vital early warning if there are issues developing, or give you peace of mind and reassurance that your eyes are in good shape.
Merry Christmas from us all

What is an OCT health check? An Optical Coherence Tomography instrument allows us to see beneath the surface of the back of your eye which allows us to detect any sign of problems or disease. OCT instruments use very advanced technology to detect abnormalities at an incredibly early stage. You will find OCT’s in most hospital eye departments and the results obtained are incredibly detailed. What happens to my images? Your images will be stored on file, so that when you see us again for your next appointment, we can compare your images to see if anything has changed. Why should I have it? Having an OCT health check in combination with your normal eye examination will allow us to obtain the most detailed information about your overall eye health. Early detection will lead to timely treatment and better outcomes for the health of your eye and your overall health. What do you do if you find something? Depending on the problem you may be referred to an ophthalmologist for early treatment or it may be an issue that needs monitoring to see if it develops into something requiring treatment. How long does it take? The scan itself takes only a few minutes, but we like to explain the findings to you so the appointment for the scan will be 15 minutes. If you have it in conjunction with an eye examination it takes a total of 45 minutes. Who should have it done? Anyone can have the OCT scan including children. The first scan gives us accurate benchmark with which subsequent scans can be compared to. This is an incredibly powerful way of detecting even the smallest changes to your eye health. You can have this incredible diagnostic and sight saving scan in Shepshed for only £20. For more information or to book your 3D retinal scan please call Ryatt Optometry on 01509 503344.

Can You Help Find The Bailey Family? In the churchyard of St Matthew's, Darley Abbey, Derby, is a memorial to Walter, Jessie and Ivy Bailey, of Shepshed in Leicestershire, who died when the Lusitania was sunk in 1915, and to Gilbert Cotton who died in Darley Abbey in 1917. (Gilbert was the nephew of Walter and Jessie). The memorial has been in pieces for several years, and it should be rebuilt. I am currently putting a funding application together, and need to see if I can find any family members. Does anyone know of anybody who might be a descent of the Bailey family? Any information would be grateful received. Please phone me on 01332 551404 or email revpeterbarham@btinternet.com. Thanks Peter Barham, Vicar of St Matthew's
Michael Wortley 1936 - 2017 We are sad to report that Shepshed’s local historian and well know personality, Michael Wortley, sadly passed away in August this year. Michael was well known for his historic ‘Magic Lantern’ slide shows of photographs of Shepshed from the 1850s to more modern times. The slide shows brought these old images to new audiences and raised thousands of pounds for good causes. Michael was a pillar of Shepshed society and the ‘go-to’ man for information about the village. He led a packed life which saw him on active service in the Royal Leicestershire Regiment, running his own vehicle restoration business and as a much loved family man. Michael lived life to the full and will be greatly missed by his family, many friends and the people of Shepshed.
Shepshed History Society Tuesday 14th November members of the Shepshed History Society were entertained with a very informative and enjoyable talk given by Mr Clive Katz, his subject being the Back to Back Cottages in Birmingham, these unique buildings having been erected in what was previously known as China town due to the many Chine immigrants making their home there. He went on to explain all about the origins of these primitive labourers cottages that sprung up as industry began to take over the local rural countryside. And thanks to the National Trust intervention when there was mass destruction of these primitive homes that were stuck together back to back, a small section was saved from being demolished. These they turned into a fascinating museum with each property depicting a different time frame and which includes a tailors shop, a maker of glass eyes and a watch hand maker. Fortunately for us all, their equipment had also been saved for today's generation to learn all about their interesting past. And as the evening progressed, along with countless tales to interest us Mr. Katz also related how toilet effluence that was collected by the night soil men was taken up to what was known as Soil Hill where farmers would purchase it for fertilisers. This area subsequently became the affluent Solihull area and that is how the name came about. A very enjoyable evening was spent by the society who will also be looking forward to the December Social Evening where they will enjoy a free Christmas buffet and entertainment given by Mr Adrian Dobson and which will take place on December 12th. An amendment to the Nov report: The Titanic actually collided with the Iceberg on April 14th and sank on the 15th.

Shepshed Town Council made the decision to purchase large poppies from The Royal British Legion at a cost of £3:00 each and erected them on various lamp posts along the Parade Route and the footpath at the side of the War Memorial and Glenmore Park. This received an overwhelming positive response from local residents. Also, as a show of respect the Town Council building was illuminated red during the Poppy Appeal. Thank you to everyone who attended on Remembrance Day.

Shepshed Running Club The annual 7 mile race organised by Shepshed Running Club this year raised £1300 for local good causes. This years beneficiaries were the Volunteer Centre, Rotary Club, Special Community Bus, Swimming Pool, Wellbeing and Friendship Group, Oaks in Charnwood Senior Citizens Group and the Toy Library. Club Chairman Richard Bibb "Over 400 runners who finished received a souvenir long sleeve tee shirt. Our aim is to promote our sport and our Club not to make a profit, so we try to donate as much money to charity as possible. I would also like to say well done to our Thursday night beginners group, many of who were running their first race."

The Shepshed Probus Club The Shepshed Probus Club meeting was held at the Junction 23 restaurant on 6th November and after enjoying a very pleasant meal our respective secretary and President covered club business before the speaker was introduced. Our speaker this month was Bert Bower who spoke about the history of radio. Bert is an in-house speaker who spent many years teaching electronics at Loughborough University but he's had a long-term interest in radio and can remember using crystal sets with a cat's whisker! In the early days primitive development of radio was happening all over the world with some of the main players being Nicholas Tessler, A.G. Bell, Clark Maxwell and Marconi although the latter was accused of plagiarism. Valves were invented and Edison discovered how to make them more efficient by creating a vacuum inside and then Marconi surprised the world by claiming to have sent a message to America from Poldubh in Cornwall. With so many people working on the problem it wasn't too long before plastic versions of the valves which were invented and innovations are being designed and produced ever day, miniaturisation being a good example. Radio is still in it's infancy so who knows what's to come next after television.
Shepshed Food Bank Received A Cheque For £275 The cheque was presented to Food Bank Treasurer, Bernard Ball by the Chairman of Council (Cllr Claire Poole) and Vice-Chairman, (Cllr Jane Lennie) Bernard Ball “On behalf of all at the Shepshed Food Bank , I would like to say a sincere thank you to Shepshed Town Council for the grant received for £275. Since the Food Bank started some 4 years ago, we have always been grateful for the ongoing excellent support and backing we have received from the Council both with our premises and other practical and grant support. The grant received will greatly help in the general running of the Food Bank to ensure we continue to give a much needed service to the community in the town” Cllr Jane Lennie “Shepshed Town Council is grateful for the support given by the Food Bank to residents in difficult financial circumstances and we continue to value and help Shepshed’s community groups”
We are always looking for new members so please contact our secretary Wilf on 01509 769802 who would be delighted to talk to you.
Shepshed Lions Community First Responders Received A Cheque For £500
Shepshed Rocks!
Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders has been boosted by a generous grant from Shepshed Town Council of £500. This is the third grant that the CFR Team has received since they started work in our community 4 years ago.
It is a great craze that has little cost, lots of creative fun, gets kids out in the fresh air and teaches them that it's nice to make something for someone else.
Charnwood Voices’ 2018 Come and Sing (One-day workshop) Handel’s Coronation Anthems
Saturday 13th January 2018 at Trinity Methodist Church Centre Royland Road, Loughborough LE11 2EH
Our president reminded us all that our next meeting was our Christmas luncheon on 17th. November to which the ladies were invited.
We now have nearly 1000 members! And the children are loving it !! Several of the local groups ie brownies..st John's cadets and several nurseries/ playgroups are also taking part.
Whether you are a regular singer and belong to a choir or have not sung for a while, as long as you enjoy singing and can read music to a certain degree the following may be of interest to you!
The King Shall Rejoice Zadok the Priest Let Thy Hand Be Strengthened My Heart Is Inditing
Bert took questions from the floor at the completion of his talk.
Two weeks ago by daughter and I introduced a new craze to shepshed. Children (and adults) have been painting and decorating pebbles and hiding them in and around shepshed for other children to find ..they can then keep the rock or rehide it .. When they find one we ask them to take a photo and post it in the Facebook group 'shepshed rocks '
Do You Enjoy Singing?
Shepshed Lions Club CFR Coordinator Bob Lilley said, " This generous grant will be put to good use for the benefit of our community. We will be putting the money towards a fundraising project to raise £10,000 to purchase a number of Community Public Access Defibrillators in cabinets to be put in prominent places in the community. We really appreciate the support we receive from Shepshed Town Council" Currently in Shepshed the existing community Public Access Defibrillators are located at Co-op store on Anson Road, Shepshed Post Office in Market Place, Funeral Directors on Belton Street, Co-operative Memorials Charnwood Road/Kings Road and Shepshed Town Bowls Club on Charnwood Road (although, this is yet to be fitted on the wall)
All choral singers have heard of Zadok the Priest, and most have probably sung it at some time or other. But how many people are as familiar with the other three great anthems? Composed for the coronation of George II in 1727, the Handel Coronation Anthems are a masterpiece amongst masterpieces in the choral repertoire. Workshop Leader: Nicholas Scott-Burt Rehearsal Accompanist and Performance Organist: Adrian Moore Registration: 10am. Performance: 5.30- 6.15pm approx Cost is £15. Music provided.
Cllr Jane Lennie “Shepshed Town Council thanks the Shepshed Lions for their help to our residents for health emergencies. We are proud to support them”
This is open to all singers. Advanced booking is essential and places are limited.
Currently in Shepshed the existing community Public Access Defibrillators are located: Co-op store on Anson Road, Shepshed Post Office in Market Place, Funeral Directors on Belton Street, Co-operative Memorials Charnwood Road/Kings Road and Shepshed Town Bowls Club on Charnwood Road (although, this is yet to be fitted on the wall)

Shepshed Lions Club Shepshed Lions have had a very successful and enjoyable year. We have raised lots of money which has enabled us to help people in need and local groups. We would like to thank the people of Shepshed for their generosity and support, without whom we wouldn't be able to do what we do. We are now looking forward to helping Santa meet lots of children, young and old, over the Christmas period. "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year" from Shepshed Lions
Shepshed WI Members met in November for their AGM and to vote for the committee for 2018. Following this plans were finalised for a visit to the cinema, a coffee morning and the forthcoming Christmas Tree Festival at St Botolphs Church in December. At the December monthly meeting there will be a talk by Felicity Austin called ‘An Old fashioned Christmas’ followed by a faith supper. All meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at Christchurch Methodist Church, Field Street, Shepshed at 7.30 pm and visitors are always welcome.
Please Stick 'Em Up! Subscribers to the Charnwood Borough Council garden waste service
are being reminded to make sure they’ve put their stickers on their bins. Only bins with stickers – proof of a current subscription - will be emptied and last week (up to November 24) the Council had refused to empty just over 100 bins which had not displayed stickers.
If you have received your sticker, please make sure it is on your brown
garden waste bin. If you have not received your sticker, please contact the Council on 01509 634563.
Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, lead member for major contracts, said: “We
have sent around 34,000 stickers to customers and the vast majority have put them on their bins and they are now being emptied. We’d like to
remind people who may not have had a chance to put their stickers on
bins to do so as soon as possible, otherwise they may not be emptied. If

If a sticker is not displayed then the bin will not be emptied and
crews will only return on the next scheduled collection date. A hanger
explaining the reason for non-collection, which can also be for having the wrong items in the bin, will be left for customers.
If you haven’t signed up for the service, you can do so at any time. It costs £28 for a 12-month subscription (when paid by direct debit), which is

Shepshed Town Council is often approached by residents when issues and problems arise in and around Shepshed, for example pot holes in the roads, dog fouling in the streets, acts of vandalism etc. Generally, we are either able to deal with these directly, if the issues is under our jurisdiction, or to assist in resolving the issue by liaising with the appropriate local authority or utility, when we have no powers to deal with the issue ourselves. However, it can be helpful if residents themselves report particular problems directly to the agency responsible as it can save time. If a number of residents report the same issue, then this can help prioritise any work required. So below we have provided useful telephone numbers to allow residents to report problems directly. Welcome Budget Backing For Small Business Says Local Specialist Small businesses received some welcome backing in today's Budget, according to a local tax specialist. Carl Whitehead who owns TaxAssist Accountants in Shepshed said: "Local business owners have grown used to bearing the brunt of Budget changes and new legislation and receiving little in return, but the Autumn Budget has at last given them some good news to encourage investment and growth. The £44 billion housing investment announcement will be a welcome contribution to local economies, with many local businesses, particularly in the construction industry, reaping benefits. Many local business owners will also be looking at available opportunities under the £2.5 billion scaled-up British Business Bank, the £500 million investment announced for new technologies including 5G mobile networks and fibre broadband and £2.3 billion investment in research and development.” PHOTO: Kalv Garcher (left) Charity Manager, Coping with Cancer and, on the right Celestia Barby, owner of Boss VIP agency.
Agency Adopts Leicester Cancer Charity A unique Leicestershire and Rutland charity, Coping with Cancer, has new supporters: Boss Studio's VIP. The Role Model Agency recently presented “The Matrix” a red carpet event at the Canalside, Birmingham and gave the charity the opportunity speak to the audience and encourage their much-valued donations. Celestia Barby, the Leicester studio's owner says “To give our backing to Coping with Cancer who support people with distressing illnesses, such as brain tumours, is so rewarding. They have the means to help others in many ways, whether their needs be practical or emotional. We are going to include Coping with Cancer as our chosen charity for every event we present at Boss Studio's and look forward to sharing the journey with them. I truly believe that you don't need a reason why to help others, it's simply something we feel inspired to do". Coping with Cancer provides support for anyone affected by any type of cancer be they sufferers, family or friends. Services offered by Coping with Cancer include many types of complementary therapies, counselling, meditation, support groups and even legal advice, at Time Out sessions around the county. Anyone interested is very welcome to drop into Helen Webb House in Leicester or simply visit online: www.c-w-c.org.uk Chris North, Chair of the Management Board of Trustees says “It's wonderful to know we have friends such as Boss VIP and supporters, even as far away as the West Midlands. Cancer knows no boundaries and neither do we”. Boss VIP events will be exclusive, inspirational and jam-packed with models, inspirational speakers, professional acts, and a VIP fashion show. “We intend to present them in major locations throughout the UK and possibly beyond. Individually deigned, the stated aim of each show is “to create happiness with beautiful moments in people's lives!” says Celestia and adds “ We want everyone who comes along to feel like family, to enjoy and join in the fun, and feel the energy in the room - something I have heard Helen Webb House also encourages”. That sounds like very good news for Coping with Cancer: unique event worthy of a unique charity.
"The Government has clearly listened to the Federation of Small Businesses and halted plans to lower the VAT threshold. Keeping that at £85,000 for the next two years will be welcome news for many small firms and self-employed business people. The personal allowance will increase to £11,850 from April and the higher rate threshold moves to £46,350.” "Cancelling the planned rise in fuel duty will help those businesses which deliver products and services to our homes, where cars and vans are essential not a luxury. Many business owners will also be relieved that vans are excluded from the planned increase in vehicle excise duty for diesel vehicles. In the future, local business owners will want to look closely at the potential benefits of electric cars as company vehicles.” "Business rates will now increase in line with the consumer prices index, instead of the higher retail prices index and many local businesses will be delighted to see the back of the so-called 'staircase tax' which would have hiked their rates bills if their workspace was split over more than one floor of a building. More frequent valuations are also welcome and many local pubs will benefit from a £1,000 discount for another year.” "We will be looking in more detail at the many announcements made by the Chancellor which will impact on small businesses, but overall there has at last been some recognition for the over five million small businesses across the U.K. who contribute a massive £1.8 trillion to our economy.”
The Landscape Of Charnwood Forest And Its Environs; Geology And Topography Talk by Alan Briggs Monday 22nd January 2018 Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall at 7.30pm You may wonder as you walk, or drive, around Charnwood Forest what really makes up our wonderful landscape. Alan Briggs, our speaker this evening, was recently asked by the Charnwood Roots Project to provide a summary of the geology and landscape of each parish in the area. So his talk has grown out of that project. He will begin with the volcanic origins of Charnwood on the other side of the globe some 500 million years ago with its rare fossils and cover its subsequent journey through to the ice age and present day landscape. Alan Briggs has a joint degree in Geology and Archaeology from Leicester University as a mature student. He has a wealth of knowledge about each parish following his involvement with the Charnwood Roots Project. FUTURE TALKS Monday 19th February. Gone with the Wind; the lost Leicestershire Windmills, talk by Mark Temple, Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall, 7.30pm. At one time every family's diet included bread which relied on a constant supply of fresh flour. So virtually every village had a mill of some sort, a watermill if there was a suitable stream, or if not, a windmill placed on an elevated position where its sails could catch the wind. At their peak in 1835 there were 152 mills in Leicestershire, and many locally (Woodhouse Eaves, Mountsorrel, Markfield, etc). Mark has tried to gather together all the photographic images that have survived and has made a collection of milling stories. He knows of the existence of many mills but their images have been lost.

Side By Side Could You Help Someone With Dementia Do Things They Love? What is Side By Side? Side by Side is an Alzheimer's Society service which helps people with dementia keep doing the things they love and get out and about with the support of a volunteer. This service can make it easier for people with dementia, who might sometimes feel isolated or find it difficult to leave their homes, to continue to feel part of their local community. How can you help? We are looking for volunteers in Leicestershire who would like to support people with dementia to continue with their hobbies and interests enabling them to remain socially active within the local community. Suna Tilley, Side by Side Coordinator in Leicester, said: “Volunteers are crucial to the success of this service”. If anyone wishes to raise funds for a particular charity they can host a BBC, however there are volunteers who will host the event for you. So far two such events have raised £125 for MH (Methodist Homes) and £130 for Dyspraxia Awareness. There will be no BBC on December 3rd instead All Age Worship will be a Café Church. All Age Worship is the first Sunday of the month at 10:45. Led by a worship band, the music is a mixture of fun action songs and contemporary worship songs. There is always a main theme and we have crafts, prayer activities a talk and bible stories. Usually the service is around 45 minutes with refreshments afterwards. For a lot of people, a traditional Carol Service is the real beginning of Christmas. There will be well-known carols for the congregation to sing with prayers and readings by members of the congregation, also music by both Junior and Senior Choirs including solos. We will be providing hot drinks and mince pies after the service. This really is an event you would not wish to miss. Latest News From... Christmas... A Time For Giving As Christmas approaches and thoughts turn to giving gifts, it seems appropriate to repeat the well known phrase, ‘A dog is for life, not just for Christmas’. This message is a plea to NOT give animals as presents at Christmas, or at any other time for that matter. The Christmas season in particular can be a time when normal routines are disrupted. Parties, entertainment and visitors do not make ideal situations in which to introduce and settle a new pet into unfamiliar surroundings. Regarding a pet as a gift also reinforces the attitude that animals are commodities or lifestyle accessories. Another concern against giving pets as gifts is the number of animals returned to centres or callously abandoned in the weeks around and after Christmas. Choosing a companion animal is very personal and should be thought through and researched carefully. Despite advice from the RSPCA and other animal welfare organisations there are still people who adopt a pet with the same mentality as buying a product which can be discarded or replaced at the slightest whim. Having a pet is not compulsory and prospective pet owners should consider every aspect of the species they intend to adopt before proceeding. Animals have feelings and caring for another living being is a privilege and a responsibility. There are many factors to consider when choosing a pet. Any reputable animal organisation such as Woodside will do everything possible to guide and match people to the most appropriate pet for their circumstances and lifestyles. Unfortunately there are many unscrupulous pet traders and online sources who do not give accurate information about the animals they are selling or care about animal welfare. They are only interested in profit’. It is recommended that prospective pet owners go to a leading animal welfare charity or re homing centre. Pet shops, newspaper ads and websites are not recommended! Although there are many reputable private breeders, breeding pets contributes to the serious problem of pet overpopulation while thousands of healthy very adoptable animals languish in shelters. For some people, traditional companion animals are insufficiently challenging or they may be attracted to a particular animal species. Others may want to impress their contemporaries or keep a pet as a status symbol. For a variety of reasons there has been a massive increase in the demand for exotic animals, fuelled by online selling. One hundred million wild animals are traded annually. There are over a thousand species of exotic animals kept by private keepers, greatly outnumbering the range of traditional domesticated species such as cats and dogs. Many of them are dangerous wild animals requiring special licences which is of great concern to animal welfare organisations Fortunately at Woodside the animals needing a permanent home are traditional pet species, such as cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and aviary birds, all waiting to find their forever homes. Many of them will be spending Christmas at the centre. Although they will be cared for and pampered over the festive season by the dedicated staff and volunteers, giving a gift to these animals with no home yet or making a donation to Woodside would be a wonderful gesture in the spirit of Christmas. Pet toys, treats and pet food, (kitten food in particular is always needed) will help the animals celebrate the festive season. Blankets and pet beds will keep the animals snug and warm as well as dog coats when they go for their daily walks. Old towels and blankets are always in needed as they have a short life at Woodside. Old items no longer suitable for human use are ideal for the animals. All donations can be dropped into Woodside Animal Centre, 190 Scudamore Road, Leicester LE3 1UQ. No animal asks to come into this world but once they are here we all have a responsibility to ensure they are protected from harm and cared for in a safe and appropriate environment. They all have a right to play, feel joy and give and receive love. They can’t choose their owners but Woodside takes great care to make the right choice on their behalf. On behalf of all the Woodside animals, staff and volunteers may we wish you a Happy Christmas. Elizabeth Allison
Fundraising Drive Provides Boost For Rescued Dogs The Groom Room, based at the Fosse Park branch of Pets at Home, has raised £470 and provided free grooming for 14 dogs in a bid to raise funds for Woodside Animal Centre – the Leicestershire branch of the RSPCA. ‘Rescue Week’ saw shoppers at the store donating generously to help the charity to buy new grooming clippers and blades for the rescued dogs coming into the centre. “Many dogs come to us in a really sorry state” said Kim Talbot, the Animal Care Specialist at Woodside. “Keeping animals well-groomed is not just about how they look; it’s important for their health. When hair becomes long and matted, it is difficult to keep clean and can cause real distress for the animal.” “Pets at Home’s Groom Room have been incredibly generous to us in the past, providing free clipping services for a number of our animals. But it’s important that we can do some of the grooming ourselves, too – particularly for dogs who become too stressed during transportation. We had some clippers but they were old and useless, so this is a huge boost for us.” The store advertised the drive as rescue week and staff members gave up their time alongside staff from Woodside to collect donations from shoppers in the store. Claire Sweetland, The Groom Room’s manager, said: “We are always willing to support Woodside Animal Centre; it’s such an important charity doing incredibly important work. So when they approached us for help, we were only too happy to get involved. The credit really should go to our customers though who are just fantastic. As animal lovers, you can be sure they will always give generously to this kind of thing.”

Shepshed Labour Party Town Council Group Update The Shepshed Labour party would like to wish all residents of Shepshed a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We would also like to thank everybody that works and has input to Shepshed Town Council thank you all for your hard work over the last year. Town Council Chairperson Claire Poole: It was my honour to lead the Remembrance Sunday Service; in November, it was very good to see so many people remembering those who have given their lives for the benefit of us all. We often get asked various questions from local Shepshed residents were they need to go to access local council services, many local residents come to Shepshed Town Council as there first port of call, we are also often asked to publish who to contact in the first instance so for your information we are providing a small guide for who best to contact
Shepshed Labour Group Setting The Record Straight Over the Proposed CCTV for Shepshed. The Labour group on Shepshed Town Council would like to put straight the misinformation posted by the Conservative Group regarding CCTV. Firstly, local residents should know that the CCTV is not a Town Council project, the CCTV has been proposed by the Shepshed Town Team which represents local businesses of Shepshed. The money to be used for the purchase of the CCTV cameras is unused shop front improvement grant from Charnwood Borough Council. The money for the CCTV is also not guaranteed, this was not made apparent in the Shepshed Eye. The Shepshed Town Team requested that the Town Council paid for the ongoing upkeep of the CCTV, if they are installed. This is where the objections by the Labour group were raised and generally ignored by the Conservative group. The Conservatives were willing to make cheap political points against the Shepshed Labour Group, instead of working together for the benefit of all local Shepshed residents.

I have lived in Shepshed for most of my life; apart from going to Coventry for University for 3 years to study a BA Sociology and Social Policy and living in London for a year doing an
Council. In other areas of the UK CCTV has been either removed or monitoring stopped due to spiralling maintenance costs, so that other local services were protected; these questions were not answered by the Tories on Shepshed Town Council. Shepshed has seen its population continually rise with all the new housing developments, whilst at the same time the money received from the Tory Controlled Borough Council reduced each year and local basic services cut or totally defunded, meaning that the Town Council has had to pick up the pieces to continue these local services. There is not an endless local money pot from Shepshed Town Council to compensate for inadequate funding from the Tories in Charnwood, Leicestershire or National Government. For example, the Shepshed Volunteer Service is now grant-funded by Shepshed Town Council. Charnwood Borough Council may take months or years to approve the money to be used for the CCTV instead of other projects so there are no guarantees that the CCTV will even go ahead. Labour asked where has all the police money from the housing developments gone, it appears it has gone to general police funding. Why can’t that money be spent on the upkeep of the cameras in Shepshed or on a local police car. Question also; if the Conservatives in Shepshed and Charnwood, who have run Shepshed Town Council and still currently run Charnwood Borough Council, were so concerned about Shepshed Town centre why have they

Your Guide To Being Screen Smart
Member Of Parliament
Nicky Morgan
T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk
Each of us spends an average of 2,740 hours (3.5 months) a year staring at a screen! So, it’s probably no surprise that 90% of computer users say they regularly suffer from screen fatigue - headaches, sore or tired eyes and problems with close-up and long-distance vision. By being Screen Smart you can help minimise your risk of suffering from visual stress and keep your eyes feeling fresh and bright. Here are a few quick tips to help minimise screen fatigue: Take frequent breaks - give your eyes a rest by following the 20-2020 rule. Look away from your screen every 20 minutes, for 20 seconds and look at something 20 feet away! Create an eye friendly environment - position copy document at roughly the same distance as your eyes are from the screen to avoid having to continually refocus and minimise any glare or reflections. Customise your screen settings - position your screen at arms length and keep your eyes level with the top of the screen. Select
a font size of 12pts or above and make sure you have a clean screen. Keep blinking- Your blink rate can fall by up to 400% when working at a screen. For an instant refresh try closing your eyes and rolling your eyeball around behind the closed lid. And, finally make sure you have regular eye tests. If you work on a computer at work for prolonged periods of time your employer is obliged to pay for an eye examination. Ask your optician about specialised digital spectacle lenses for computer use. It was a privilege and honour to lay a wreath, at Shepshed’s Remembrance Service, in memory of the men and women in our armed services who paid the ultimate price to secure our freedom. It is always a privilege to walk through Shepshed, with so many members of the local community, and behind the pipers. It was a cold but clear afternoon and the service was extremely well-attended. Thank you to everyone, particularly at Shepshed Town Council, and the members of the Royal British Legion who arranged the service and to all the volunteers who collect donations in the weeks ahead of Remembrance Sunday. On 22 November the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, announced his Budget. The Government intends the Budget to lay the foundations for a Britain fit for the future. As we leave the EU the Chancellor wanted to make sure that Britain can take advantage of being at the front of a technology revolution, invest in new technologies and support businesses with a £2.3bn package on business rates. It was also important to support families by increasing the National Living Wage by more than inflation, cutting income tax by raising the personal allowance again, freeze fuel duty for the 8th year and invest more in our NHS. First time home buyers, buying a home worth up to £300,000, will also pay no stamp duty. We also need to recognise that the UK will need to spend money
on things such as customs and
border controls as we leave the EU so the Government has set
aside a further £3bn to prepare us for every eventuality.
Our economy is forecast to
continue to grow, albeit slowly
but we need to continue to cut the country’s deficit (the gap
between what we bring in through taxes and borrowing and what
we spend) and bring our national debt down.
On 1 September the Government rolled out the 30 hours free
childcare entitlement in England,
which is saving local families up to £5,000 per year per child. Parents wanting to take up a 30 hours
place for their child in the January term should apply now to ensure that they receive their eligibility
code in good time for next term.
Information about how to do this can be found in a letter from the Minister which is on my website under “Issues” at
www.nickymorgan.com In addition, parents who already
have a child taking up a 30 hours
place need to confirm their details are up to date every three months and should receive an email
notification four weeks and two
weeks before this date reminding them to do so. If you have any
problems or queries please do get in touch.

Your Borough Councillors would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough. We deal with housing problems, (such as you trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property and planning issues. Planning We all keep our eyes on the current and the proposed planning applications, such as dirt on the road, temporary traffic lights – either not in place or not removed in time – not providing the wheel washing facility as part of the planning condition. HGV’s not taking the designated approved traffic route, or sticking to the approved hours of working. The types of houses being proposed are not in keeping with the area or agreed in the outline planning application. The trees and hedges are in need of protection, or have been removed. We would like to thank the residents for their support in keeping us informed as to what is happening in their areas, we cannot be everywhere and you are our eyes and ears. Dog Muck We have received an increase in complaints about the amount of dog muck on the pavements, especially now it is hidden in fallen leaves. This is a danger to people’s health and it is the responsibility of dog owners to clean up after their dogs, a fine of up to £1,000 can be issued. PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG, dog dirt can be deposited in litter bins as long as it is in a bag. Performance Data During quarter 2 there have been 54 stray dogs collect, 281 requests for Pest Control, 10 CPN warning notices issued for waste on properties, 139 Fly tipping incidents investigated, 228 reports of incidents of noise or other pollutions 42 high risk Food Safety inspections, 181 enquiries relating to Food Hygiene. Legal Actions taken, 2 food Notices Issued, 8 Dog Control FPNs for breach of Public Spaces Protection Orders, 12 FPNs issued for litter, 3 FPNs for Fly Tipping, 1 FPN for abandoning a vehicle. Charnwood’s Stray Dog service achieved RSPCA Golden Footprint Award for the 2nd year running. Garden Waste Collection If you have a Garden Bin you will be aware of the new system regarding the sticker to show that you have an up to date permit. You have a month’s grace allowing you to receive your new sticker in the post. Do not forget to display it, or your bin will not be emptied. For more information visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/gardenwaste or call 01509 634 563 On Going Issues Planning and Anti-Social behaviour (majority of it confidential) is still taking up a large amount of our time. Do not hesitate to contact us should you have issues you wish to discuss with us. I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc. Advance Notice Of Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) A TTRO is to be made for the following location: Footpath K62 this is to facilitate the resurfacing of the footpath with Macadam. K62 runs from Banbury Drive down besides the new housing estate onto Tickow Lane. The works will be undertaken in three phases:- Phase one – 2nd January for 2 weeks, Phase two – 16th January for 1 week and Phase three – 23rd January for 2 weeks. Get Set To Get That Job Leicestershire County Council is offering 16-25 year olds unique voluntary work experience placements across a range of departments. Can’t get the experience to get a job? Can’t get that job to get the experience? If you can commit to one day per week for up to six months to get where you want to be then get in touch either by Email: getset@leics.gov.uk, or visit www.getsetleics.co.uk or phone 0116 305 0603. There are loads of places looking for volunteers. Everyone has something to give, and there will be someone looking for a skill you have! Check out www.valon.ine.org.uk/volunteers/ find-volunteering-opportunity to find opportunities in your area. WHY this will impress employers and shows that you are motivated and willing to learn. You will also get stuff to put on your CV and talk about at interviews. 12 Days Of Christmas The 12 days after Christmas will see one message posted on Facebook and Twitter a day based on recycling and waste. Message will include advice on using biodegradable tableware for a party, recycling empty glass bottles, what to do with your Christmas cards and how you can use Christmas Dinner leftovers. These messages will also go on the Less Waste website and last year’s campaign can also be found there. www.lesswaste.org.uk/ category/news/page/5/
Waste Less Save More I have been involved in the Community kitchen project which is supported by County, Hinckley & Bosworth Council and Sainsbury’s who are working together to change the way people think about food so that they change the way they use it, so that less goes to waste. Over 15 million tonnes of food are wasted in the UK each year; a large portion (7.4 million tonnes) comes from our homes and is increasing each year. It is shocking to think that at the same time the number of people facing food insecurity and struggling to feed themselves adequately in the UK is increasing. Training people how to prevent food waste in their own homes and giving them the tools to help the other people do the same means that the communities themselves are agents of bringing about the desired changes. Making these changes of course benefits everybody. Hedges, Trees And Footpaths May I remind residents that it is your responsibility to make sure that hedges and trees belonging to you do not encroach onto footpaths or jitties. If it is necessary for County to write to you and then to undertake the necessary work to cut back the overhanging hedges or trees then you will be charged. Crossing Patrol Person Following concerns raised by parents of children at St Botolphs school to Councillor Radford over a number of years. Cllr Radford is pleased to report that following an assessment of the area County have decided to fill the position for a crossing patrol person. County have also agreed to advertise for a replacement crossing patrol person following the retirement of the current person at Forest Street/Kirkhill. These are paid positions if anyone is interested please call 0116 305 7233 or email SCPService@leics.gov.uk For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or email christine_ radford@hotmail.com or christine. radford@leics.gov.uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road, 10-11am.
