Shepshed Probus Club’s Incoming President For 2018/2019 Mr Horace Lister is shown being congratulated by the outgoing President Mr Pat Harris after being given his chain of office.
Shepshed Volunteer Centre Barn Dance
Shepshed Probus Club
Shepshed Volunteer Centre Barn Dance was another great success with a sold out event! We raised £688 for the volunteer centre which will go towards running our services including gardening, befriending and volunteer transport. I would like to thank everyone who attended and who helped to make the event a great success including our lovely band Tenpenny Bit.
The March meeting of Shepshed Probus Club was held at J23 Truck Stop Restaurant on Monday 5th March at 1230hrs which included the club’s AGM. After the initial club business the club inaugurated their new President, Mr Horace Lister who was introduced by the outgoing President, Pat Harris. No other changes were made to the rest of the committee. After lunch members were regaled by tales of Horace’s derring do. He is lucky to be alive having survived 2 major catastrophes in the mines he was working in, one of which made him profoundly deaf. Horace’s work in the mines was to drive tunnels or shafts to allow the miners access to coal seams including shafts which extended thousands of metres out under the sea. During this time Horace and his team broke a record for drilling a shaft further and faster than ever before or since. This record still stands. Due to the AGM taking less time than expected the meeting finished earlier than normal and members were advised by the President that the next meeting would be held on Monday 9th April at the same venue. If you are interested in becoming a member of Probus, please contact our secretary Will Shelton on 01509769802 who will give you details of the club’s terms and conditions.
Shepshed History Society
Shepshed Special Community Bus Easter Competition Shepshed Special Community Bus are doing lots of fundraising events to help towards funding of a replacement bus for our 15yr old 7 seater mpv, it is becoming very tired and costly. We use the vehicle to help the community to do their shopping, join in local events, attend weekly activities and a lot of people we provide transport for would be isolated and lonely without the Community Bus. We are always very grateful for any donations and help with fundraising. We have just done an Easter Competition with the children in the community and we have had some fantastic entries and would like to thank everyone for joining in and supporting us. We also have done an Easter hamper and guess the Rabbits name. If anybody wants any information about our weekly journeys please contact Alison on 01509 650531.
The Hallaton Treasure was the subject Shepshed History Society listened to when Mr Peter Liddle came to speak to them on March 13th. This unique find in the village of Hallaton, east of Leicestershire became known the world over and is practically priceless in terms of knowing about our past history. It was discovered by a metal detector enthusiast in 2000 and it led to an extraordinary discovery of thousands of iron age coins and many other artefacts. Primarily they were thought to be buried as gifts to the gods and even the bodies of two poor watch dogs were unearthed and were thought to have been sacrificed to the gods. Bizarrely as well, scores of pigs were found to be buried at the entrance of the temple, each one have a foreleg missing and why, no one seems to know. Also a famous Roman helmet was unearthed adding to this all important find and which took nine years to restore. Many slides were shown to illustrate this monumental find and the group had a thoroughly thought provoking and enjoyable evening out as they learned numerous other facts of the discovery. The April meeting on the 10th will be given by Mrs Joy Henderson and is entitled 'An Easter Treat.' Newcomers always welcome.

Shepshed & District Camera Club The members were able to enjoy a lighter series of meetings at Shepshed and District Camera Club during the past few weeks, some held away from their usual base of Shepshed Council Offices. The one competition was judged ‘in-club’, the judge being unable to travel because of the recent snow, and saw class wins for Garry Rennocks with his print ‘Not A Happy Bunny’ and John Loan-Clarke with his digital image ‘Caressing The Wave’. Club Chairman Alan Harris entertained the members with a presentation of photographs taken during a recent visit to New Zealand which was, to quote his own words, ‘A talk covering the North and South Islands with some discussion about bird life and the impact of bad ecological management in the early days of European settlement’. The first of two practical evenings, loosely referred to as ‘Fun At The Farm’, saw a hardy group of members warmly wrapped up against the cold attempting to photograph outdoors using a number of different sources of light during which some very interesting pictures were taken. A few meetings later the members gathered in the clubroom for another practical evening including both portraiture and table top photography. The biggest, and most light and entertaining event recently, was the annual 3-club image matching battle with the clubs from Coalville and Ashby, this year hosted by the Shepshed club at the Bowls Club. For the judge, Ralph Duckett from Burton-on-Trent, this was his first time to judge an event of this type and he entered very well into the informal nature of things, including the expected banter from the audience, as he made his decisions, and by the end of the contest his awarded marks were Ashby 66, Shepshed - 54 and Coalville - 44.
Shepshed Twinners Have A Crepe Time! Shepshed Twinners and their friends recently enjoyed their annual Crepe evening – with recipes given by their friends in Domont. In much of Western Europe, just before Lent is the time for pancakes, but not in France – they eat crepes, but depending on where they come from they may be called gallettes. Unlike pancakes, which are normally rolled with simple fillings, crepes are usually stuffed full of goodies, and then folded into 4 (if you can) and are eaten as a whole meal. The French take their food very seriously – white flour for the desert crepes, and buckwheat flour for the savoury. Our star chefs, Phil and Alan, make the batter, with careful attention to the fine detail, and a supervise the relay of helpers who man the special crepe machine and the frying pans.
The excitement is in assembling the filling…. As you can see the crepes can be quite something. We start off with gallettes, normally including an egg, cheese, ham, and even salads – whatever takes your fancy. Then the crepes for dessert. As you can see there can be so much filling it can’t even be folded! All washed down with a little something (in France it is often cider) and good conversation which often involves discussing our chosen fillings!
The Club’s meetings continue after Easter until the summer break commencing in early June and further details are available at the Club’s website www.shepshedcameraclub.co.uk
There’s no such thing as tossing a crepe, they are carefully turned using a spatula - not as exciting as pancake day, but the fillings are something special.

Taxi Driver Loses Licence After Illegal Passenger Pick-Up
Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July. From 1.00pm ‘til 6.00pm
A taxi driver has been disqualified from driving for three months after being caught plying for hire by licensing officers.
This is the time of year when the people of Shepshed begin the planning to open their gardens to the public to help raise funds for two local charities. The funds raised will help to keep Shepshed Volunteer Centre providing the services we do.
Jatinder Singh, 35, of Ring Fence, Shepshed, appeared at Loughborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday 19th March, to plead not guilty to plying for hire in his private hire vehicle at the Download Festival, Castle Donington, in June 2017.
Do you love your garden? Would you like to show it off to others who enjoy visiting gardens to discover new plants and planting ideas to enhance their own plots? Then please think about joining in the Open Gardens this year.
If you can, it would also be great if you could sell raffle tickets, but this is not essential. The Volunteer Centre is open on both days to support all the gardens, with our well-being garden open to the public also.
The event is advertised on the national Open Gardens website and we advertise locally in the press and with posters and banners to tell visitors what to expect, where they can get tickets and programmes and what is special about each garden.
We would love to offer some new gardens this year to add to the experience of the visitors. So why not ring Shepshed Volunteer Centre and speak to Angie for more details? 01509 508040 between 9.00am and 11.00am Monday to Friday.
Gardens can be tiny, average sized or larger. You may choose to open for both days, or for only one. Visitors walk between gardens, some visit by car, others use the Community bus.
Please get in touch soon as we need to put the programme of gardens together with some advertising from local businesses and a map to help visitors to find your garden.
A very good time was had. Why not join in the fun? www.shepshedtwinning.co.uk
Licensing officers from North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) proved that Singh had wound down the windows of his vehicle before shouting ‘taxi’ in their direction. It wasn’t until inside the vehicle and the journey had begun that they were told to call the office and make a booking. Private hire vehicles can legally only pick up pre-booked passengers, a regulation that exists to provide passengers with important safety protections against unregulated drivers. In his defence, Singh claimed he had not shouted ‘taxi’ and that the enforcement officers had entered the vehicle uninvited whereupon they were told they needed to make a booking. Magistrates’ found Singh guilty of the offence, giving weight to the clear and corroborated evidence given by the enforcement officers. Singh was disqualified from driving for three months, fined £300, and ordered to pay costs of £983, and a £30 victim surcharge. Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said: “These laws and regulations exist for good reason and protect people from unregulated drivers that could be driving unsafe or dangerous vehicles. All taxi drivers are fully aware of the law so there really is no excuse for this offence. Public safety is our priority, not least at such a well-loved event like Download festival, which brings thousands of people to North West Leicestershire every year.”

Latest News From... Spring Into Action Spring is in the air and we are surrounded by the images of cute and cuddly pictures of baby animals at this time. Aaaarh! Well, traditionally baby animals are born in spring after the parent animals have paired up. Although some parents share the responsibility of rearing their young, often in nature, this is not the case. It’s also not the case that baby animals are only born in springtime. Cats seem to have extended their season to breed throughout the year as the rescue centres across the country know. Pregnant females are often brought into rescue centres like Woodside and we are often full to bursting in the cattery! If mums have their kittens away from human company, these kittens grow up semi-wild and then become a local problem. Very quickly afterwards, the mums become pregnant again and the cycle continues. Sadly, stray, lost and unneutered cats live on the edge and are often injured in fights and are weakened by poor diet. The answer? Do please get your male and female cats neutered and microchipped. It is amazing how many cats we deal with at Woodside as strays without a microchip. With a microchip we would be able to reunite them with their owners. We put our pregnant mums into foster-care so that they, and their kittens, don’t become institutionalised in the cattery. It gives the mums security and this reduces their stress and the kittens grow up in a home environment. All of our mums are neutered and microchipped once their kittens are independent and all of the kittens are neutered and microchipped as part of our adoption process. This prevents the inevitable decline of the health of cats, as neutered cats generally settle into domestic life very gratefully! Spring Tips For Cats:
• Make sure your cats are neutered • Microchip your cat • Ensure your details are up-to-date on the microchip • Keep an eye out for fleas • Use flea treatment regularly • Treat your home if your pets have fleas (Oh yes! Statistics suggest that for every flea you see on your cat, there are 9 more in your home!!!!!)
• Use worm treatment regularly • Groom your cat and put their fur out for the birds • If you would like to become a cat fosterer for Woodside, please our Reception team on 0116 2336677
• If you need help to microchip your pet, this can be arranged if you 0116 2336677. You would need proof of ownership (eg vaccination card) plus a utility bill. It’s a quick and efficient procedure and is a fantastic way to reunite lost cats with their owners. Baby Birds: Birds will use the fur that you have groomed from your pets to line their nests. It is not too late to put up nest boxes in your garden but do please make sure they don’t face the prevailing wind and are also not exposed to the midday sun. When baby birds are in their nest or nest box, they are relatively contained and safe. Once they fledge (leave their nests) they are very vulnerable. Parents still feed them for a few weeks but the babies are out in the open and are easy targets for a variety of dangers. If you find a baby bird, don’t touch it unless you believe it to be in danger. If you feel it needs to be moved, place the fledgling into a bush with plenty of cover, even thorns, to deter predators. Stand back, keep an eye on the baby and soon the parents should return to feed it. You might hear “peeps” which is the communication calls between babies and their parents. Dawn and dusk are particularly vulnerable times for fledglings and it is best if domestic cats are kept indoors during this time. Bird lovers are always quick to blame cats and their owners for the deaths of birds so I urge cat owners to think about their cats’ routines. We now live closer to others in our neighbourhoods with greater chances of cats being killed or injured on the roads so this is another good reason to consider for keeping cats in overnight. Make sure that you continue to feed your birds and put out fresh water too. Parent birds will often feed their offspring seeds, caterpillars and insects and then use our feeding stations to top up their own diets. Avoid salty food scraps and “kibble” or break up peanuts in case these are fed to baby birds where they could easily get stuck. Spring Tips For Birds:
• Put that nest box up before it’s too late! Birds like to explore these and often choose ones that have had chance to “weather”.
• Put out the fur you have groomed from pets for the birds to use for their nest-building. There is nothing better than to see a blue tit flying off with a hairy moustache that it will weave into its nest.
• Ensure good hygiene on bird feeding stations • Put out regular supplies of food and fresh water to help the parent birds to stay in good health.
• Please remember, if you can, keep your cats in from dusk to dawn to enable the fledglings to be safe.
How To Get Help:
• Speak to your vet/vet nurse about flea and worm treatment • Alternatively, pop into Woodside where our shop staff will advise you

A Surprise Visitor To The Shepshed Lions Club Meeting!! The members of Shepshed Lions Club had a very pleasant surprise at their monthly Lions Club business meeting at Livio’s Restaurant on Monday 5th March 2018. They had a visit from Bella Oakley of Shepshed together with her parents and big brother. Shepshed Lions Club supported Bella’s parents fund-raising efforts with a donation to help buy Bella a state of the art hearing device to help her with her daily life. She said a big thank you to all of the members present, and went on to demonstrate how effective the new device worked. Her father went into another room and whispered into the device, which looks like a smart phone, and Bella heard every word. Bella then charmed all of us with a little speech of thanks. The parents were also very grateful for the support and told us what a difference it had made to Bella, but also to them. They then gave the members two boxes of chocolates that unfortunately did not survive the end of the meeting. It was fantastic to see how effective the device was for Bella and showed us that it was money very well spent.
Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders are embarking on an ambitious project to place a number of Community Public Access Defibrillators (CPAD’s) into the community in Charnwood. The Defibrillators are state of the art live-saving devices that will be placed in heated, locking Cabinets in the community. At present they have purchased five defibrillators and Cabinets at a cost of £1314 each + VAT and costs of installation. Locations of the CPAD’s will be announced when arrangements are finalized in the near future. Fund-raising is an ongoing process but we hope to raise enough to put 15 CPAD’s across Charnwood. If you would like to sponsor a CPAD and cabinet please contact Lion President Bob Lilley, Coordinator of the First Responders on 07585 772902 or by e-mil at thelilleys15@gmail.com. In addition to placing the CPADs in the community they will provide training to members of the public on how to provide basic life support, CPR and how to use the defibrillator. The training is free of charge but we do invite participants to make a donation to the funds. If you are a member of a club, community group, or a group of friends and you wish to learn how to deliver CPR effectively and use a defibrillator please get in touch.
Shepshed Lions Club Needs Your Help Shepshed Lions Club is looking to find a number of people in the community who may wish to help at their fundraising events in the future. You must be over 18years of age, of good character and be willing to fit in with a great team to achieve amazing things in our community. We are looking to find people who may not wish to become a member of the club, but willing to help with these events. We are looking for able -bodied people who want to help in the community. If you think you could help us please contact Lion President Bob Lilley on 01509 508265 or by e-mail at thelilleys15@gmail.com
Shepshed Lions Club Searching For New Members Shepshed Lions Club is looking for new members to boost its team of 25 in order to serve our community, of which we are very proud. The motto of the Lions Clubs international is “We Serve”, and that is what we do. It is rewarding work and really does great things in our community. Rotary Helps Kids Get More Active When the Rotary Club of Shepshed Charnwood offered a donation to Belton C of E Primary School, they asked the school how they thought they could best spend the money. The School Council put their thinking caps on and came up with the idea of buying new playground items to replace some of their old worn out equipment. A variety of items have now been purchased and presented to the school. The photograph shows members of the School Council with their head teacher, Mrs Liz de Looze, and Alan Darby President of the Rotary Club of Shepshed Charnwood. Mrs de Looze and the pupils thanked Rotary for their generous donation. This will enable the school to continue with their objective of making sure that the children have the opportunity of being active during their break periods.
Young Artist Competition 2018 PHOTO: Rotarian Richard Hornsby at a Young Artist Display The Shepshed Charnwood Rotary Club’s annual Young Artist competition goes from strength to strength. This, our third year received entries from five local primary schools including, for the first time, East Leake's Brookside and Lantern Lane. These, together with St Winefride's (Shepshed), Belton and Kegworth submitted a record 249 entries based on the theme "Where I Live". The competition is not judged on schools but on the individual pupil's entry. The age range of the award winners was from 4 to 11 and each one was presented with a certificate and a book token at their school. Judging this year was undertaken by local art experts experienced in evaluating the work of young artists. All of the judges were very impressed with the fine work that the pupils had done. The winners in each group were chosen on the composition, imagination and detail in each painting or collage. Encouraging primary school pupils to use their imagination and produce a variety of works of art is one of the aims of the competition. Getting them involved in looking at their local community is an additional benefit. It allows young people to express in art form what may be difficult for them to say in words. A big thank you to all who have supported this event, especially the schools and local libraries for their enthusiasm and support, without which it would not happen.

County Councillor
Crazy Plant GiveAway
Christine Radford
T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc. Planning – Extension To Newcroft School I attended the planning committee at County when the extension to the school was approved. I brought to the attention of the committee concerns raised to me by residents which I had discussed previously with officers. These were drainage of the proposed hard standing to the playground, which has been addressed by officer and the parking outside of the school. I did ask for yellow lines to be put at junctions to Porlock Close and Malvern Avenue, but this request was rejected. Have Your Say – Proposed Changes To How County Support Passenger Transport Services Leicestershire County Council has to consider if and how it can meet a need for public transport where this need cannot be met in other ways. The vast majority of roadbased passenger transport in Leicestershire is provided by commercial bus operators at no cost to the tax payer. The current policy sets out that, where appropriate County would meet daytime public transport requirements not met by the commercial bus network by: Subsidising conventional bus services or through less frequent minibuses and demand responsive transport (DRT) type services in areas of low usage. Give your views by going on line: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/ passenger-transport-consultation or 0116 305 0002 or email ptps@ leics.gov.uk Consultation finishes on 13th June 2018. Advance Notice Of A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) A TTRO is to be made for the following location. New Walks. The purpose of the TTRO is to facilitate Fort Estates Limited with a new sewer connection and the installation of 2 new gullies. The duration of the TTRO is for a period not exceeding 3 months commencing on the 3rd April. The actual duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of 2 weeks within the aforementioned duration. New Look Website For The County’s Fostering Service The changes to the FosteringLeicestershire.com website came as part of a push to recruit more in-house foster carers. The new pages, streamlined to help people who may be thinking about fostering to gather all the information they require, to help

them along their journey including information about who can foster, the support on offer, payments and allowances and details about the council’s popular ‘Find out about Fostering ‘ events. These informal events provide those interested in fostering with a relaxed atmosphere to find out more from experiences staff and foster carers. They are hosted between 6.30pm and 8pm at County Hall, although visitors are advised to arrive at reception for 6.15pm. The fostering and adoption team can be contacted on 0116 305 0505 or via email at fosteringandadoption@leics.gov.uk Like other local authorities Leicestershire has seen the number of children in care increase significantly over the last few years. Leicestershire currently has 552 young people in care. The Department has been working hard to increase the number of foster carers, recruiting carers for specific groups, for example parent and baby placements and importantly to retain carers once they foster. Road Network – Loughborough Road/Forest Street A group of us who sit on the Town Team have had a meeting to discuss the problems on Loughborough Road and Forest Street. As County Councillor I have had a meeting with County highways officers following the group’s initial meeting to discuss how we go about improving these roads. Could they be made one-way? It is not as straight forward as was thought, surveys etc. will have to be carried out. Certainly further meetings will need to be convened. If anybody has any comments to make do not hesitate to contact me, either for or against. Nothing will be done without having a full public consultation when proposals can be considered. Furniture Upcycling Classes The next 2 classes to be held locally are 12th May in Fearon Hall Loughborough and 16th June at Agar Nook Community Centre. County also offers talks to Community Groups such as Composting, recycling. For more information please contact Anna Low on 0116 305 8127. Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or email christine_ radford@hotmail.com or christine. radford@leics.gov.uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road, 10-11am.

Borough Councillor
Christine Radford
T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com We can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough Council. We deal with housing problems, (such as trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, AntiSocial Behaviour, whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property. We also deal with planning issues. Planning – 300 More Houses A plan for 300 more homes on Tickow Lane is in the pipeline. The proposal site is across the road from Tickow Lane’s entrances to Anson Road and McCarthy Road. This is next to another new development by Jelson for 180 homes which has already commenced. The agents for site owners have asked for a screening opinion from Charnwood as to whether an environmental impact assessment is needed. Your Borough Councillors can assure you, when the outline plans are submitted we will make our views known and keep you informed. As well as this new planning screening request there are other schemes along the Tickow Lane and Oakley Road under construction. Shepshed’s roads and other infrastructure are already stretched to capacity. Planning – P/18/0435/2 34 Dwellings WM Davis Site Wm Davis has submitted a further planning application for 34 dwellings on the site between Tickow Lane and Anson Road. Outline planning permission has already been given; this latest application is for detailed approval. This area is next to the old railway line and fronts Tickow Lane where the new access road entrance enters this estate Planning – P/17/2467/2 Unit 1 Gelders Hall A planning application to install 4 internal spray booths with 4 x external exhaust stacks and 4 x external air intake stacks, plus associated equipment. Plus further outlets for internal paint mixing and abrasion room. The ward Cllrs are concerned at the close proximity to the houses on Belvoir Way due to the fact that they already have issues with noise, and smells from paint processes already taking place at this site. Street Naming Charnwood Borough Council asked for suggestions to the naming of a new road of 38 dwellings on the site of the old stables at the junction of Oakley Road with Belton Street. Shepshed Town Council proposed that of the late Bernard Burr, who lived just down the road and served Shepshed for well over 30 years either as a Town or Borough Councillor, this follows a similar
suggestion of the late Graham Perkins who has had a road named after him. Help Find WW2 Veterans For Free Remembrance Tours The Legion is on a mission to take all surviving WW2 veterans back to where they served. Tours will take place throughout 2018 and will give WW2 veterans the chance to meet up with fellow veterans and pay their respects at battlefield sites, cemeteries and memorials. The Treasury is enabling these free tours to be funded by Libor Fines, and will enable the veterans to return with a family member and carer. No national database exists of WW2 veterans who are still alive today, so the Legion is asking the public to help them make sure every surviving veteran can take part. If you’re family, neighbour or carer and know someone who fought in WW2, please tell them about this opportunity and encourage them to sign up. Contact Victoria.Coomber@ charnwood.gov.uk or telephone 01509 634931 Swimming Pool None of us want to lose this as a facility, with this in mind following concerns raised by Iveshead School that they were finding it difficult to maintain and pay for its upkeep. Cllr Tassell and Radford contacted a subsidiary of a National company who already take on smaller school/community swimming pools. The Cllrs have already had a meeting with this Company who, following this first contact have shown an interest and are in fact having a meeting with the Head Master in early April. The swimming pool was built by the people of Shepshed back in the 1960’s this was instigated by Dr Whowell and Mr Mallory, the then head of Hind Leys and was covered over at a later date and then handed over to the local authority. On Going Issues Planning and Anti-Social behaviour (majority of it confidential) is still taking up a large amount of our time. Do not hesitate to contact us should you have issues you wish to discuss with us. We shall continue to hold our regular monthly surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council offices, Charnwood Road, from 10-11am. No appointments are necessary. Member Of Parliament
Nicky Morgan
T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk I was delighted to welcome the Year 6 pupils from St Winefride’s in Shepshed to Westminster recently. After an early start they had a good tour of Parliament and then went off to see some other sights nearby. It is always a pleasure to welcome constituents of all ages to Parliament. It doesn’t matter hold old or young visitors are, everyone learns something from the excellent tour guides. If you’d like to visit (you don’t have to still be at school!) then do let me know. Congratulations too to everyone at Oxley Primary School on their recent ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted. I know that Ofsted inspections are not easy experiences and a lot of hard work from everyone goes into each inspection. Following my recent visit to Urgo Medical I am working with the company, local residents and Leicestershire County Council Highways Department on traffic issues in the area. There is no obvious and immediate answer but I am very pleased that both Urgo and the County Council have been so willing to discuss the issue and possible measures which could be taken. I know that planning continues to be a matter of great interest to Shepshed residents. The Government has recently announced national plans to get more homes built. This is welcome news for everyone who wants

to own their own home but we know that new housing brings additional pressure on local infrastructure such as our roads, schools and GP surgeries. And it is disheartening to see more planning applications being made and approved when existing sites haven’t been started. I recently asked the Housing Minister about the plans and what Government can do to support councils such as Charnwood which has planning permissions for 10 years of housing. If the building doesn’t start then that affects the five-year land supply, which leaves other sites vulnerable to development. The Minister pointed to changes being made to the National Planning Policy Framework and also to a report the Government has commissioned about the ‘buildout’ rates of new sites. I will report back further in future Shepshed Community Eye editions. Finally I was pleased to see the Health Secretary set out plans for wage rises of at least 6.5% for over 1.1million NHS workers in England. The lowest earning NHS staff will see their wages rise by 15% over the next three years. Meanwhile for many other tax payers don’t forget that April will see another rise in the income tax threshold so taxpayers get to keep more of their own money to spend on themselves and their families.

STOP PRESS – Appeal Ref: APP/ X2410/W/17/3184008 The Appeal against the development to the rear of 62 Iveshead Road was heard on 13th and 14th March and to everybody’s amazement the decision was issued on 22nd March. The Inspectors decision was to dismiss the approval of the reserved matters and therefore refused, namely: landscaping, layout, scale and appearance.
