Shepshed Probus Club The latest meeting of Shepshed Probus Club was held on Monday 9th April at Junction 23 Restaurant. Our new President Horace Lister opened the meeting, welcoming everyone including the guest speaker Keith Hodgkinson. He then handed over to our secretary Wilf Shelton who carried out the normal club business before introducing Stan who once again made us chuckle with his funny stories After a pleasant lunch our speaker was re-introduced to give a talk on a local hero, Captain Alexander Roulstone, MC. Alexander (known as Alex to his family and friends) was born on 10th October 1890 in Salford, Lancashire. Two years after his birth the family moved to Basford where his father took up basket making again. Basford was where Alex was educated to quite a high standard, as when Alex left school he was able to get a job as a clerk. On 24th September 1914 Alex volunteered for the Army where he obviously made an impression going from Private to gaining a commission, rising to the rank of Lieutenant in 15 months. He was helped by the rates of injury and death among the British Expeditionary Force which unfortunately, during this period were extremely high. By July 1917 Captain Roulstone had learnt to fly several types of aircraft and had flown bombing raids, aerial photography and strafing raids over the trenches. Eventually Alex was sent back to UK for rest and recuperation. On November 14th 1917 Roulstone found himself at Buckingham Palace where he was awarded the Military Cross. It was granted for the number of aircraft he had shot down. Three more aircraft down earlier and he would have been awarded the Victoria Cross.

Shepshed History Society On April 10th the meeting of the Shepshed History Society diversified from the normal format and decided to have a more lighthearted evening to coincide with the Easter celebrations. PHOTO: The three winners of the Easter colouring competition – Isabella Holt, Taylor-Jane Smith and Darcie McDermott.

Shepshed Youngsters Land Cracking Prizes In Easter Competition This smiling trio from Shepshed have some egg-stra Easter chocolate to look forward to after winning a competition held by The Nottingham’s branch in the town. Seven-year-old Isabella Holt was delighted to receive a hamper full of tasty treats after her rabbit holding a carrot was voted best entry in a ‘creative egg’ competition held over the holiday period. Ten-year-old Taylor-Jane Smith and Darcie McDermott (3) were runnersup and each received a selection of Easter eggs too. Customer Services Consultant Jade Hardy said: “We are dedicated to being involved in the local community so rather than just put the eggs out in-branch we decided to engage directly with local schools and playgroups. That was received extremely positively and we received lots of entries. It was tough choosing the winners as there were some really creative contributions, however we are happy Isabella, Taylor-Jane and Darcie are all extremely deserving recipients of the prizes.”

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless

careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees.

The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed

whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and

names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms

After another short tour on the front line, Alex was shot down and wounded. He was invalided back to England and his war service was terminated in 1918. He went back to Germany with the RAF, returning to England where he married.

of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for

His father-in-law worked for the Marbleaegis Gypsum company so Mr Porritt, who owned the company unsurprisingly appointed Captain Roulstone MC as Sales Manager. As in everything else he did, Alex proved to be very successful and was appointed director and became very rich. He bought up land and a lot of bungalows. He was a very generous man and left money to legacies in Rushcliffe where he was voted in as Chairman of the Parish Council. Alex finally retired a wealthy man and went to live on the Isle of Wight. He died in 1965, a very successful man.

partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's

the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries.

As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the

property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest

to couples who have come together and have children from different

partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life.

If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still

sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property.

Westminster Law will assess your current circumstances and arrange

the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

And so Mrs Joy Henderson was booked to entertain the group with her magical expertise and comedy patter all of which the society thoroughly enjoyed. The evening was well attended and many members took part in the tricks and also enjoyed the free baby Easter eggs that were offered by the society committee. The May meeting to be held on Tuesday the 8th will be business as usual when Dr Sutton is booked to give a talk entitled 'The 1914 Christmas Truce.' New members are always welcome to attend at 7.30 on the second Tuesday of the month at Glenmore Centre, Thorpe Road, Shepshed. There is ample parking space available as well as free tea or coffee for all the visitors to enjoy.

Open Church At St Leonard's Swithland You are welcome to come and visit this beautiful church during the summer months. We are open from 2.00pm to 4.00pm serving tea and cakes on: Saturday 9th June Saturday 14th July Saturday 11th August Saturday 8th September

Serenade News

Shepshed WI

Serenade, Shepshed’s ladies Community Choir, have been busily rehearsing for upcoming summer concert. This year the concert is entitled ‘Serenade at the Movies’ andwe will be performing at Iveshead School on June 9th. We will be performing songs old and new that have all featured in films/movies both past and right up to date. Songs such as Skyfall, 9 to 5 and Walking on Sunshine will all be sung.

Shepshed WI members met in April and enjoyed an informative and humorous insight into poetry with Norman Harrington. Plans were made for a lunch at the Harvester, a visit to the Odeon for the Silver Screen showing of ‘The Darkest Hour’ and also meeting up for coffee at the recently moved Meet and Eat. It was reported that three members attended the annual Federation Council meeting held at Bruntingthorpe on 10th March and enjoyed the day. The guest speakers were Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Leicestershire , Jennifer Lady Gretton JP, who told everyone what her job entails being the Queen’s representative in Leicestershire, and Mandy Hickson who spoke passionately and humorously about the difficulties she overcame to become an RAF pilot ending up serving in America and Iraq, a brilliant speaker. Last speaker of the day was Edwina Curry who gave an interesting account of her time as an MP and answering questions from the floor.

The concert starts at 7.30 pm and all are welcome. Money we raise from the concert and our raffle will go toward our charity of the year, which is Shepshed Community Swimming Pool. Please come and support us if you can. If you’ve ever thought you’d love to have a go at singing but have never dared, why not give it a try? We are always happy to welcome new members, 16 years and above, so why not come along to Shepshed High School where we meet every Monday evening during term time at 7.30 pm. No auditions or tests, just come along and sing! It’s just £3 per session and this includes refreshments of tea, coffee or squash and biscuits as well as music. Alternatively, if you’d like more information, please contact Keleigh Atkin 07775 558219 or visit the Serenade website at www.serenadeshepshed.co.uk

Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at Christchurch Methodist Church, Field Street, Shepshed at 7.30pm and visitors are always welcome.

Shepshed and District Twinning Association has been twinned with Domont, near Paris for over 25 years. Time however moves on and many of our friends are now into the second generation, and travel has become easier and cheaper. Twinning is a little different these days. Enter Sheppy the Francophile Sheep, our new logo, who has been developed by one of our newer members after seeing our prizewinning entry into the Shepshed Scaresheep Festival. Sheppy is helping us to widen interest and attract new members. If you are interested in France or French and live in or near Shepshed then we have something for you. We still, of course, have contact with our friends in Domont, and encourage school’s liaison, but we also have a wide range of social activities often with a French theme. These include French films, French conversation (for all levels), food themed events and games and quizzes throughout the year. In earlier years exchanges were between families. For anyone who has never experienced this, it is a revelation. Often communication is by hand signals and gestures, or we try our best French or sometimes simple words. We discovered that the French are very much like us, with similar values and generous hospitality, and it is great fun to experience their food, drink, and culture – just like they do when they come to visit us. In recent years we have also had short holidays together, these have included visits to Lille, Liverpool and Dinan – where we continue to build our relationships with real French people and our diverse culture. We welcome all age groups and backgrounds and have great fun! For more information and contact details visit our website, www. shepshedtwinning.co.uk or see us on Facebook - Shepshed and District Twinning Association.

Latest News From... Be Litter Free And Live A More Animal Friendly Lifestyle There has been a lot in the media in recent months regarding litter and, more particularly, the large quantities of plastics in our seas. Litter of any sort is unsightly but it has now been acknowledged that it is dangerous, not only to us humans but to the wildlife and animals who share our world. Although this is an issue that should be solved with world governments working together, locally individuals can bring about greater and more immediate changes to their environment. If we all refrained from discarding unwanted items wherever we happen to be, then there would be a marked difference in our local environment. Now I’m not for one minute saying that anyone reading this article is a litterer - but this litter comes from somewhere. I have never really wanted to get into the mind of people who treat our world with such indifference – that’s a dangerous place to go – but how can people simply thrown their litter where they are instead of taking it home to discard properly? This unsightly mess left in our beauty spots is a potential hazard for wildlife. I was speaking to someone the other day who told me about a sparrow pulling at a piece of plastic, as it gathered nesting materials. Watching BBC Blue Planet 2 series

we can see this on the cliffsides where young seabirds in their nests are surrounded by our waste materials, some clearly entangled. If we all took a greater pride in our environment, animals wouldn’t suffer: The shy, unassuming hedgehogs that become entangled in the plastic can holders often aren’t found early so have suffered before they can be helped. The ducks and swans along our waterways with discarded fishing line and hooks embedded in wounds, struggling to survive, are equally hard to catch in time. The broken glass left indiscriminately causes untold damage to paws and, when there is a hot spell, starts fires which harm and kill greater numbers of wildlife. All of this is avoidable if we all disposed of our waste with more care. The propensity to litter takes on an altogether more concerning situation when fly-tippers choose to dump their accumulated rubbish indiscriminately in beauty spots, grass verges and in farm gateways. Is it laziness? If not, what is it? Recycle whatever you can. Many years ago, spurred on by a fabulous article in Gardeners’ World magazine, I built 4 “Buggingham Palaces” with various groups of youngsters using materials we gathered from family and friends. These items included odd bricks (whole or otherwise), tiles, stones and broken terracotta pots, 3 pallets and then twigs and branches after a bout of pruning. These “Palaces” have

become much visited and used environments for frogs, toads, newts and all manner of minibeasts to shelter and nest in. It is not just a means of tidying and recycling but a way of ensuring there are habitats for a myriad of animals and creatures to thrive in. Visitors to our garden are amazed at the way we have made this feature and the signs of life in evidence around it. There are 2 opportunities for members of the public to visit (see the flyer) as we open our garden twice each year in aid of the Woodside. The bird box in our garden with a camera in it, is currently the focus of frenetic nest building with the blue tit parents gathering the cat fur that we have placed into old bird feeders for the birds to use. Have you put your cat fur collection out yet to help the birds? On another recycling note, with spring, comes spring cleaning and what better way than to have a tidy at home and then take any items to a charity shop to sell to raise much-needed funds? Recycling on another level! We have RSPCA Charity shops in Coalville, Wigston, Birstall and Melton and we are always looking out for quality castoffs. All the money raised through the charity shops, including the Giftaid kindly signed up for by our supporters, comes to Woodside to help us to provide for the needs of the animals in our care. Below, I’ve listed a few other ways that you can help the environment and animals.

• Unwanted gifts are always appreciated by us at Woodside as prizes for the tombolas we hold to raise funds. • Any coins, even foreign money, can be cashed in by Woodside adding extra funds to help the animals. • Make sure that no one in your family ever drops litter. Help us to spread the word. • Talk to your family about recycling. Can your family recycle more of your rubbish/unwanted items? Can you start a compost bin for your vegetable waste? • Recycle your old towels and blankets - bring them to Woodside so that we can use it as bedding for the animals in our care. • Check that your cosmetics, shower and bath care items and household cleaning items are animal friendly – and that the bottles are recyclable! • Visit one of our charity shops to increase our sales, and ultimately our funds. • Look after the wildlife in your garden – make sure that your garden is litter-free and as animal friendly as possible. County Councillor

Christine Radford

T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc. Advance Notice Of A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order. (TTRO) A TTRO is made for Hallamford Road, to facilitate Western Power Distribution to lay cables across the carriageway to a new Substation. The TTRO is for a period not exceeding 3 months on the 18th May. The actual duration is not anticipated to exceed a period of 1 day within the aforementioned duration. I understand that this might be altered due to the closure of the M1 over this weekend. (See below report) TTRO – Tickow Lane I was away for 2 weeks over Easter and I believe there were problems with the closure of Tickow Lane. The trouble was due to a number of gas leaks being found and the programmed works could not be carried out until these leaks had been mended. I understand that that Tickow Lane should be re-opened at the end of April, let us keep our fingers crossed. Closure Of M1 Motorway The M1 Motorway will be closed over the weekend of 11th May to enable a new bridge to take the Kegworth bypass to be put into place together with other works. Between junction 23a and 24. It is proposed to be closed from 10pm on Friday 11th May and reopen at 3pm Sunday 13th May. Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre Open 7 days a week 10am to 4pm – FREE Entry. A Temporary Exhibition for 2018 will be ‘The Bosworth Tommies: A market Town at War 1914-1918’. This exhibition celebrates the work of the ‘Bosworth Tommies’ a group of adults with learning difficulties, have been researching and creating themed works of art, including a model street scene populated with characters they have created to show the range of people affected by the work. The exhibition also gives a glimpse of what life was like for the real inhabitants of Market Bosworth during four years of uncertainty and loss. East Midlands Trains The County Council is aware of the publication of the new East Midlands Trains timetable that will come into effect in May 2018 and run until December 2018. This is part of a normal process of timetable review conducted by the train operator and the Department for Transport, it is important to note that the review process includes no element of consultation with service users or stakeholders. The review has adopted the position to remove Bedford’s stops. This will result in some Midland Main Line trains to and from London being slower than the current timetable, some services will be quicker as a result of not stopping at Bedford and overall the impacts are broadly neutral. There will be capacity improvements as a result of the new timetable. Officers at County are aware that rail journeys may become slightly slower; they will continue to engage with the current operator, East Midlands Trains, and through the refranchising process for Midland Main Line services lobby for improved rail service provision for Leicestershire residents.

Newhurst Project – Incinerator You may or may not be aware the original planning consent was granted by the Secretary of State in June 2012 to Biffa following an appeal. As County Councillor I had proposed refusal and this was upheld by the planning committee at County. Unfortunately the old Quarry already had a planning permission on it for Landfill. The Inspector used this as a reason to grant permission for an Incinerator, this was well before me being elected as County Councillor. A further planning permission was granted in March 2015 to increase the plant capacity from 300,000tpa to 350,000tpa. Biffa announced a new partnership with Coventa in June 2017 to explore the development of Energy from Waste plants. Biffa are currently progressing the commercial and financial viability studies and detailed design aspects for this project. An update on progress will be provided in the Group’s preliminary trading results announcement in June 2018. Biffa will be submitting an application to the Environment Agency shortly. This is to amend the Environmental Permit for the site to increase the annual capacity to bring it in line with the planning permission. I will keep you informed as and when I have details and it is hoped that the liaison committee will be re-convened prior to the commencement of any construction works. Cut Price Compost Bins Available County are offering cut-rice compost bins to households to help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. Composting is a great way to feed your garden, it is better for the environment and it will save you money. Residents can pick up a compost bin at a subsidised price from only £10.98. The bins are made from recycled plastic. For more details or to order a home composter visit www.getcomposting.com or call 0844 371 4444. Master Composters Celebration Evening I had pleasure in welcoming and handing out awards to the County’s Master Composters, Waste Action Volunteers, Real Nappy Advisors and Love Food Hate Waste Advisors. During the evening talks were given by volunteers from the Master Gardener scheme who works with Leicestershire families to help them grow their own food and eat more healthily. Colleagues from Garden Organic who provide a great deal of support, knowledge and training were also in attendance. Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail. com or christine.radford@leics.gov.uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road 10-11am.

Join The Annual Ashby Food Gusto Festival And Experience The Region's Best Food & Drink On Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th May Situated in the Bath Grounds in the centre of Ashby de la Zouch there is yet another fantastic line up with more than 60 producers and products from venison, pies, pickles, pates, farmhouse cheese, preserves, olives, artisan bread, crepes, hand crafted chocolates, patisseries to local wines, beers, ciders, spirits and more. There is something for everyone. Why not make a day of it and enjoy lunch out where you can choose between wood fired pizza, organic beef burgers, venison and bison, spicy samosas, vegetarian/vegan dishes, caribbean BBQ, Indian cuisine and Thai to name but a few. These could all be washed down with local craft ale and cider, new British cocktails, English wines grown and produced in the Midlands or a barista coffee. Where possible Food Gusto tries to support local charities and this year Just 4 Children has been selected - with a special focus on Harry Culwick from Packington who suffers from Cerebral Palsy. Borough Councillor

Christine Radford

T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com We can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough Council. We deal with housing problems, (such as trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour, whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property. We also deal with planning issues. Planning – Appeal Decision Land Rear Of 62 Iveshead Road The full details of the Appeal decision (APP/X2410/W/17/3184008) are now on the web site. Go to planning ref P/16/1980/2 if you wish to read the full reasons as to why this application was refused. Planning Decision – 64 Brick Kiln Lane – P/17/2048/2 And P/17/2086/2 Erection of 7 dwelling (2048) and 3 dwellings (2086) were both refused planning permission. A copy of the decision notice can be found on planning explorer. Planning – Land Rear Of The Post Office, Market Place – P/18/0658/2 An application has been submitted to build 3 single storey dwellings to the rear of the Post Office. The access to the site is for pedestrians only through the red doors fronting Market Place. We are concerned about the lack of parking for this site as there is already limited parking in this area of Shepshed. This site is within Shepshed’s conservation area and as such needs extra scrutiny. The application does not mention Archaeological interests which would need further investigation. The site is elevated and would be very prominent and could spoil the character of this part of Shepshed. Planning – Land To The Rear Of 63 Iveshead Road – P/18/0589/2 An application to erect 2 dwellings to the rear of 63 Iveshead Road has been submitted. Your ward Cllrs are concerned that Iveshead Road is already very busy, the proposed access is opposite 62 Iveshead Road which already has outline permission for 70+ dwellings. The proposed parking in front of the existing property does not allow for vehicles to leave or enter the site in a forward direction. There are already problems with flooding in this area. We are also concerned that the entrance to the rear of the property is not wide enough to allow access without causing problems to the adjacent dwelling. The Ward Cllrs have asked that this goes before a plans committee for a decision rather than give Officers delegated powers. Enterprise In Charnwood Free Business Workshops and one-to-one sessions are to be held throughout April and May at various locations across Charnwood. For more information go to www.case. coop or email enquiries@case.coop Homelessness Your Borough Cllrs were given an insight into a new Act which will come into force in October of this year. At a training night we were talked through the new Homelessness Act. Below is a brief outline of the implications to the local Council. The Act has been given Royal Ascent and it is the biggest change in the homelessness act since 1977.

Councils, such as Charnwood, who are Local Housing Authorities now have a duty to help all those eligible or threatened with homelessness by assisting them to remain in their present accommodation or seek further secure alternative accommodation. An assessment by the Local Housing Authority needs to be carried out into the circumstances as to why the applicant is likely to become homeless. Councils are now duty bound to try to prevent homelessness when a person applies for help and is assessed as being eligible of homelessness or being at risk of homelessness with 56 days. New resources will be needed to cope with this new law. It will mean councils arranging for more temporary accommodation and investing in more accommodation for single people. It will also require extra Human Resources to deal with this new act. If you need further information please contact CBC on 01509 263151 and ask for the Housing needs department. Charnwood Appoints A New Contractor A new contractor has been appointed to deliver multi-million pound improvements to borough council homes in Charnwood. Property maintenance firm Fortem has been awarded a five-year contract by Charnwood. The new contract commenced at the beginning of April following a rigorous tendering process which involved tenants as well as staff. The estimated contract value is around £18m over five years and Fortem will install a number of kitchens, bathrooms, heating systems and doors. Swimming Pool It was reported in an earlier edition about the swimming pool and we understand that a productive meeting was held between the Head master and the Company. On Going Issues Planning and Anti-Social behaviour (majority of it confidential) is still taking up a large amount of our time. Do not hesitate to contact us should you have issues you wish to discuss with us. We shall continue to hold our regular monthly surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council offices, Charnwood Road, from 1011am. No appointments are necessary. Member Of Parliament

Nicky Morgan

T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk I was very pleased to mark the recent English Tourism Week by taking part in the launch of a new Loughborough/Charnwood tourist guide. The guide highlights many of the amazing tourist and leisure opportunities in our area; as well as highlighting an important part of our economy which many local jobs depend on. It can be found at www.goleicestershire.com/ loughborough Regular readers will know that I’ve been campaigning for full electrification of the Midland Mainline (the train line which serves us here in Loughborough) for many years now. We thought this had been secured in 2012 and preparations started to be made and local companies and expertise procured. Unfortunately due to increases in costs in other parts of the country the current Secretary of State for Transport decided to axe our full electrification in 2017. The line will only be electrified up to Kettering and Corby. This is short sighted for all sorts of reasons – both environmental and financial. It also relies on the next trains to be used on the line being both diesel and electric and being able to accelerate quickly between stations. Electrification isn’t just about slightly faster journeys and newer

trains. It is about future-proofing our line for the next generation. We will remain the last intercity line to London not to be electrified and this has knock-on effects for HS2 as well. I don’t see why the Midlands should be short changed so I will continue to challenge this decision. March 29th was ‘Wear a Hat’ day in aid of brain tumour research. Before being contacted by constituents who had lost loved ones because of a brain tumour I did not know that brain tumours are the biggest cause of death amongst chidren and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. In the UK 16,000 people each year are diagnosed with a brain tumour. Brain Tumour Research is the only national charity in the UK focused on funding sustainable research to find a cure for brain tumours. Finally I was pleased (although tired at the end!) to climb up to the belltower in St Paul’s Cathedral in London recently to see the bells made at Taylor’s Bell Foundry in Loughborough before they are brought back to Leicestershire to be restored. Taylor’s is the last major bell foundry in the country and a wonderful business and heritage site.
