Shepshed History Society
Article written by Marjorie Schulz At the March meeting of the Shepshed History Society Mr Stephen Hartley was invited to speak on the Rise and Fall of the English Castles. He began by explaining that a lot of castles would of course been built out of wood as was the Tower of London, (incidentally the last prisoners here were the Kray Brothers in 1951) But these buildings were soon replaced by sturdy stone and granite edficies that gave greater protection from the invading enemies Stephen then continued to explain why certain designs and features were embraced in order to protect themselves and the reason for other buildings built in their confines. The castle privy called the garde room would normally empty into the moat and they were also used for hanging expensive clothing in these rooms, the atrocious smell killing the lice and other pests that would be snuggled up in lavish material. Many interesting slides were shown and it was a very informative and enjoyable evening. The April meeting will be given by Mr. Barry Newton who will be giving a whimsical talk on growing up in the 1950's. Contact details if required, marjorieschulz@talktalk.net

Shepshed Carnival Countdown Begins
Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance
Article written by Ann Bodycote
Shepshed Lions have announced that this year’s Carnival will go ahead as usual on August Bank Holiday Monday 26th August. Lion President Bill Holland said work is now going on to make sure that this year’s Carnival, the 10th to be held since the event was restarted, is as successful as ever. It has become the biggest family event in the town and one of the reasons for this is that while every penny we make in profit goes to charity, we know how expensive it is to take children out for a treat and we try to keep prices as low as possible. We think it is the best family value day out in the County with fairground rides, lots of stalls, great value food, arena acts and more. We invite everyone to come along to see if they agree.

Hathern Entrepreneur Receives #Wow Award From Jacqueline Gold CBE Article written by Laura Goodsell
On 27th February 2019, Laura Goodsell from Hathern, was recognised by British businesswoman, Jacqueline Gold CBE, for her success as a female entrepreneur, and awarded with a prestigious #WOW badge. Laura was one of three winners selected by Jacqueline after she entered ‘Women on Wednesday’ – a competition launched by Jacqueline in 2011 to celebrate the growing number of UK female entrepreneurs and businesswomen. Women on Wednesday (#WOW) takes place every week and is run through Jacqueline’s Twitter page. When selecting the winners, Jacqueline looks for businesses that are interesting, that have strong brand values and that she thinks have potential to grow and succeed in their industry. She looks for quality products and services, well designed websites and entrepreneurs who demonstrate good business acumen and who have spotted a gap in the market that meets the consumer’s needs. Laura says: ‘ I started Anchor Online with an aim to help small businesses enhance their online presence, to help them focus on their business and to remove any stress or worry in keeping a website updated, backed up and secure. I have worked with several local businesses including Hathern’s Pastures New Playgroup and the Pied Bull in Shepshed.’ Jacqueline Gold says: ‘Anchor Online is a freelance WordPress Agency helping small business owners improve their digital presence with a sophisticated and easy-to-use website. Laura’s creative design skills, complex understanding of SEO and desire to help others in a sometimes complicated online world sets this company apart. I wish her every success in the future. For me, #WOW is all about inspiring and celebrating female entrepreneurs. My vision is for women in the UK to come together, celebrate their strengths, skills and fantastic businesses, and do all that they can to inspire other women to realise their potential. The WOW community is a fantastic network which offers female entrepreneurs the opportunity to share advice, support each other, trade and most importantly celebrate their successes!” For more information about Anchor Online Web Design, please visit www.anchoronline.co.uk For more information about Women on Wednesday, please visit www.jacquelinegold.com/wow/wow-about
Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Kornerstone Legal services will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Passion Youth Project Article written by Victoria Gould
Passion is a project that was set up as a safe place for the young people to go. It is now celebrating its 10th Birthday in June this year. It is self funded, relying on regular donations and grants to keep the doors open. We are totally inclusive we therefore don't charge anything for the young people to use the facilities. “Passion is a place of warmth by that I mean a place where we can feel ourselves and where we can feel safe. Passion is a big part of many youths lives, for example volunteering their time to help at the church. We also do frequent soup kitchens. I would like to start doing revision sessions at Passion to support the youths with homework and the up come to their exams. I believe that this will benefit them and help them achieve their goals.” As written by one of the frequent users of Passion. Passion continues to be there for the young people of Shepshed. Not only is it open the three nights of Thursday, Friday and Sunday 7-9pm, but we have now started offering an extra session on a Thursday 4-6pm for revision or homework. This extra session will be run by differing staff from the drop in including retired teachers. The equipment is provided as we understand that young people never have a pen or pencil, let alone a calculator! We also offer snacks and drinks in order to help the brain cells work! We continue to have a monthly food fundraiser, which this month was bangers and mash with rice pudding for afters. It was all so good that I didn’t even get to try any of it as we sold out. We had over 35 people coming to the event raising £186 towards the running costs at Passion. The young people always sit with the volunteers after to have some food, which as we had sold out of food had to be pizza instead (I think they were gutted at this!). The food for next month is yet to be decided but save the date of Tuesday 9th April 5.30-7.30. Notice it is Tuesday in April not Monday as it usually is. Hope to see you there! The final touches are being done to the kitchen. This is a project that was just a dream some three years ago. Thanks to grants from Charnwood Borough Council, The Community Foundation and East Midlands Airport Community Fund it was made a reality. Their generosity has allowed us to put in a kitchen that can be used for not only the food fundraiser but also a new project called “Chat and chomp”. This will be another extra session at Passion that will allow the young people to be shown how to cook traditional home cooked meals by the older generation of Shepshed. This project will benefit not only the young people but also the community building bridges between the young and old. It costs around £19,000 to keep the doors of Passion open. We are always looking for ways to get funding towards the cost. If you have any ideas please get in touch. We are always looking for volunteers to help at the fundraising events. Our next one outside of Passion is the Oaks Fair on May Bank Holiday, where we will have a stall for Wine and water, tombola and craft items. Please come and say hello if you are there. Hopefully the weather will be like last year. We have a standing order form that people can fill out to regularly give to the running costs of Passion. This can be obtained from either the back of any church in Shepshed or from Passion Youth Hub in the Bull Ring. If you would like to donate or volunteer please contact Vicky on either Facebook or call 07960861611.
Steps Families Have A Fun Day Article written by Janet Russell
Families from across the East Midlands came out in force today at the invitation of the Steps Conductive Education Centre in Shepshed to join the staff for a Family Fun Day. Steps provides a free service for children with movement-limiting conditions such as Down’s syndrome and cerebral palsy. Not only does the centre support the children but has been described as providing a lifeline for the parents of those who attend. As it was the half term holiday, brothers and sisters were invited to join in with the fun. “We firmly believe in inclusivity and really enjoy these occasions when the whole family can come together to enjoy the games and activities which we set up. The atmosphere was very warm and friendly and everyone enjoyed getting together,” said the team leader, Indila Simandi. We were joined by four football coaches from Leicester City Football Club who routinely work with our children. They had great fun running some of the outdoor activities and making fruit smoothies! We are always so grateful for their contribution which they give free of charge.” Centre Manager, Janet Russell, added, “I was delighted to see so many families attending today. Many of the Steps children and their siblings were very happy when they arrived and eager to get involved. There was an air of fun and excitement throughout the event as mums, dads, grandparents and staff joined in with the activities. It was a lovely occasion and one which we hope to repeat.” One mum said that she benefitted enormously from having the opportunity to meet other parents of children with additional challenges. She described how isolated she felt when her daughter was first born but that having found Steps, she not only felt supported by the staff but also by the other parents and family members, adding, “Without Steps I wouldn’t feel able to get involved and find out what help there is available for people in my position. Coming here has helped me to feel comfortable with my circumstances.” The centre is celebrating its 25th year of existence. Families may refer themselves and attend sessions free of charge. The running costs are £250,00 per year and most of this is found as a result of grants and fund-raising projects. If you would like to help Steps to raise funds, or if you need further information about the charity please visit the website at www.stepscentre.org.uk

Couple Thanked For Their Contribution To Shepshed Lions Article written by Bonita Irish
Shepshed Lions Annual Charter Dinner at Longcliffe Golf Club was tinged with sadness, as it marked the farewell of two of the most hard working and committed members of the Club, Bob and Susan Lilley, with a combined service of more than 30 years between them. Susan has been President 3 times, and has been Treasurer for several years, while Bob has been President on 7 occasions. The growth of the Club during their time has been in no small part due to their hard work, both in terms of the numbers of members and the activities that have been undertaken. They were heavily involved in organising the new Shepshed Carnival, now the biggest community event of the year in the town, and without their efforts behind the scenes, Santa would be unable to make his rounds of the area in the two weeks before Christmas. Bill Holland, who is taking over from Bob as President, said, 'Shepshed Lions, and indeed the whole public of Shepshed, owe a big thank you to Bob and Susan for everything they have done while members of Shepshed Lions. Whether it was Carnival, working with Santa, the annual old folks' lunch, setting up and leading the Community First Responders, or so many of the other things Lions do, Bob and Susan were always at the heart of things, and they will be sorely missed. The whole Club sends them good wishes for the future.' Bob said,'Susan and I have really enjoyed our time with Shepshed Lions, and it is only with great sadness that we have decided to leave. We will still be involved with the Community First Responders and trying to live up to the motto of Lions, which is "We serve". Who knows, we may even get invited to next year's Charter Dinner!'
A Chesterfield Doctor Has Helped Hundreds Of People In India Have Access To Vital Eye Services Article written by Mishank Jain
Kantilal Jain, who is a consultant ophthalmologist at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, travelled to Rajasthan, India, where he and a team helped around 400 people over two days as part of charity work. The people they helped do not have easy access to eye services and were in need of cataract operations or glasses. Mr Jain, who is also a medical director at Lumivision Eye Clinic, said: “I was really, really proud and I am going to go again next year.” People were able to have their eyes examined for free and Mr Jain said he saw around 120 people by himself. Of the 400 people who attended, around 50 were listed as needing a cataract operation and 200 needed glasses. Many of the people they helped were aged 50 and above. A Chesterfield Royal Hospital spokesperson said: “We are lucky to have some terrific surgeons, consultants and healthcare professionals. We are immensely proud of Kantilal and his like-minded colleagues for everything they do at the Royal and, as ambassadors for the hospital, they are a credit to their profession.” And a Lumivision spokesperson said: “We are particularly proud to see our surgeon Mr Jain leading the way in delivering his ophthalmic expertise to help the less fortunate.”

Shepshed Probus Club
Through The Looking Glass
The Annual General Meeting of The Probus Club of Shepshed was held at Junction 23 Truckstop on 04/03/2019, this being the meeting at which the inauguration of the new President would take place, as well as the normal AGM business.
Last summer 2018 we decided to close Through the Looking Glass in Shepshed due to large overheads. We announced this on social media. From this announcement all our customers and local people were so upset to see us go they asked us to stay. We decided that if we could find somewhere suitable we would grant their wish.
Article written by Amanda Turner
Article written by Horace Lister
The President welcomed all the able members to the meeting, with the exception of John Bradford, who was away on holiday. He also informed the members that the Spring edition of the Probus magazine was available to pick up. Stan White then amused us all with his usual hilarious life stories. Honorary membership was discussed without any further additions. Pre lunch Grace was said by the President, before we all sat and enjoyed an excellent lunch. The monthly prize draw was made, with the first prize being returned to the Treasurer's coffers. The minutes of last year's AGM were read agreed, and duly accepted as a true record of that which transpired. There were no significant matters arising from those minutes, and so the election of next year's officers took place, and were confirmed as:-
Shepshed Rotary Club Collection At Shepshed Co-Op Article written by Robert Hall
Shepshed Rotary Club recently held a tin collection at Shepshed Co-Op in Hall Croft. President Robert and the Members thank the Management and Staff of the Store for their help and co-operation. Also a big thank you to the customers who so generously gave to the cause. All the monies collected will go to the Rotary International Fund for the Eradication of Polio. This terrible disease is now totally eradicated in most of the world but Afghanistan had 20 cases in 2018 and Pakistan 8 cases in 2018. Nigeria which was one of the last countries be declared free has had no new cases in 2017 or 2018. During the course of the collection some customers spoke of being affected by Polio, Caught in this country many years ago, and still suffering the side effects. The world will not be considered free of Polio until there have been no new cases for 3 years. The photo is of John and his daughter Emily who were two of our donors and collectors Phil Marriott, President Elect and Rotary Member Anne Collier.
LOROS Volunteers Needed People choose to volunteer for many different reasons but for Pete he simply says ‘if what I do helps somebody, I think its job done and I thoroughly enjoy it!’
The financial affairs of the club remain in the same region as last year, showing that the Treasurer had done a magnificent job.
The new President then gave us a brief history of his career before accepting the responsibilities of his new role. The subject of new members joining our ranks was mentioned, along with how to apply, and the question of replacement for the Secretary and other ageing officers, so that replacements can be coached properly, relieving our ageing members of some responsibility.
It has been a very challenging year for Through the Looking Glass. We have been in our new building since September 2018. Our new project is our garden so that our customers will be able to sit outside during the summer months.

The retiring President gave his closing remarks, which included thanks to all the members for their support during the year. He then inaugurated the incoming President Steve Bodycote, and wished him all the best with his endeavours in his new role.
The building that we are now in belongs to a family member. It was residential, so we put in for planning to see if we could change its use. It took a long time for the decision to be made, because of this our customers got confused about what we were doing and unsure of our location. We are located on the road from the market place up to Iveshead school.
The Heart of England Chorus Article written by Patrick Hunt
What a great response from our mixed “ Everyone in Harmony “ course that started last October, some 40 people came along on the first evening, and to date 18 have fully signed up with our newly formed mixed chorus. We even took our newest members to their first “ Singout “ at the Loros Christmas Concert in December which gave them a taste of performance in front of a large and appreciative audience This coming May we will be attending the annual Barbershop Convention in Bournemouth, competing as a mixed chorus for the first time. The inclusion of Ladies into what was a male chorus adds a new and exciting dynamic to our sound and should any other Ladies (and men) wish to join us then just come along, Monday evenings 7-30 Birstall Social Club.
Pete volunteers for LOROS as a member of the scratch card team selling £1 scratch cards at events in his community and raising vital funds for the local Hospice . LOROS scratch cards help raise the £6 million needed to support over 2500 terminally ill patients and their families in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Did you know that £5 raised for LOROS can go on to fund patient’s meals for the day so our volunteers like Pete, make a big difference. LOROS are currently looking for people to join their team of volunteer scratch card sellers who attend a wide range of venues from hospitals to fetes to pubs and anything in between. If you are a good communicator, enthusiastic and friendly why not join us, as well as supporting LOROS you’ll make new friends and learn new skills along the way. Interested in hearing more? Discover Your Local Heritage With The Festival Of Leicestershire And Rutland Archaeology Article written by Kathy Elkin
Saturday 29th June – Sunday 28th July, 2019 This summer, help celebrate the rich and fascinating heritage of our two counties. Explore the archaeology of your local area, watch experts at work and experience the excitement of archaeology with have-a-go events. On Saturday 29th June the Leicestershire and Rutland Festival of Archaeology – the UK’s biggest archaeology festival – begins; and with over 80 events planned over four weeks, this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than before. The Festival has something for everyone, with family friendly activities at museums, guided walks of our counties’ historic sites, talks by experts, displays and exhibitions, and chances to get your hands dirty with a bit of excavation. Whether it’s a visit to the excavations at Bradgate Park to find out more about the childhood home of Lady Jane Grey; or a tour of the Glenfield Tunnel, one of the earliest steam railway tunnels in the world; or a chance to build your own Roman Leicester in Minecraft, there are all sorts of fantastic and unique opportunities to explore thousands of years of secrets hidden beneath your feet. This year the festival in Leicestershire and Rutland runs for four weeks from Saturday 29th June to Sunday 28th July, and includes the Council for British Archaeology’s nationwide Festival of Archaeology (13th – 28th July). The Festival brings together local archaeological organisations to showcase all that is great about our local archaeological heritage. Peter Liddle, Festival convenor, commented: “We are extremely pleased with this year’s programme. There is something for all the family, from children’s craft events at museums around the county to serious lectures. We are particularly proud of the guided walks programme that grows every year, giving people the chance to explore sites with a local expert who can explain its unique history.” From May, Festival leaflets will be widely available from your local museum, library or tourist information centre (and many other places across Leicestershire and Rutland). The programme will also be accessible to downloaded online at https://leicsfieldworkers.co.uk/festival-of-archaeology To find out more about what is going on elsewhere during the nationwide Festival, visit https://festival.archaeologyuk.org
There will be two cameras in the Bullring, one on the Co-op in Hallcroft and two in the Market Place. The cameras will be monitored remotely 24 hours a day and the pictures will be high definition, full colour and the siting of the cameras will enable high quality images to be used in court. This complements the existing CCTV in individual businesses and means reviews can take place centrally soon after incidents are reported, making it more likely that suspects can be tracked around the town centre. The cameras in the Market place will assist the Town Team’s plans to encourage additional independent traders into the Market place and Hall Croft and encourage wider participation in community events. Investment requires confidence. Confidence on the part of existing businesses to improve their offer and the quality of the experience that they can give to customers, and confidence on the part of residents and shoppers that they can visit the centre and support local businesses in the knowledge that they are safe from crime and anti-social behaviour. The pressures on public funding means that levels of policing have inevitably declined. Businesses and communities are being encouraged to take steps to reduce the incidence of crime in the first instance and to work with the law enforcement agencies to improve the quality of life within their communities. Residents living near to the cameras have received letters explaining the safeguarding of personal privacy in their homes. The installation of CCTV systems, professionally monitored by the Borough Council and maintained by Shepshed Town Council is a practical demonstration of partnership, common purpose and mutual commitment to create a safe and stable environment where businesses and the community may invest their time and resources in confidence. Those living and providing businesses within Shepshed have the potential to benefit from this project, that amounts to a current population of over 14,000, soon to be supplemented from the additional new homes around the town, as well as the businesses currently operating within the town centre area. There is a Churches Together youth provision (Passion) in the Bullring that works with up to 250 young people and their families. Other town centre churches and a primary school mean that children and young people, parents and carers from Shepshed and the villages will all benefit. Shepshed has a range of regular activities in town for older people and those with learning difficulties and disabilities, mental health issues, physical illnesses or disabilities. All of these individuals and groups will benefit from the project. More importantly, the existence of the cameras is likely to deter levels of anti-social behaviour and allow residents and visitors to relax and enjoy their visits to the town centre. The cameras are due to be installed in the week beginning 25th March.

Friend Pulls Out All The Stops For STEPS! Article written by Janet Russell
Imogen Grosvenor is a regular attender at the Steps Centre in Shepshed where she delights everyone with her gorgeous smile and giggly personality. Imogen’s mum, Julia, has been taking her daughter to the specialist charity since she was six months old. Imogen is almost four now and participates in the sessions on a weekly basis. A family friend, Mark Winkless, heard about the wonderful work which is carried out at Steps and has seen at first hand the benefits this has brought to Imogen’s development. Mark decided that he would like to help Steps and is donating the results of his sponsored Brighton Marathon race to help the Leicestershire charity. Steps provides a free service for children with motor disorders such as cerebral palsy and Downs syndrome. The centre also supports the parents, siblings and carers of the child attending, helping them to develop the confidence to continue using the activities at home which are taught as part of the Conductive Education programme which is the cornerstone of Steps. Julia said, “The work which is done at Steps is second to none and it doesn’t stop at the centre. The staff are truly inspiring and always help in any way that they can, including with off-site activities such as swimming lessons, speech and language sessions, with Makaton signing, with the loan of equipment and with any challenging paperwork which comes our way!” Imogen’s mum went on to say that the staff act as counsellors for the parents and are always on hand to help and support. Julia told us that Imogen is really thriving! She described her daughter as being confident, funny, outgoing and caring, describing how she met her milestones far quicker than was expected, adding, “I really believe that this was achieved through the intervention of Steps.” The manager at Steps, Janet Russell described the centre as being a place where little miracles happen every day. Janet said, “The team that works here, from practitioners to admin staff are extraordinarily dedicated to giving the best possible service to the very special children and families who take part in the weekly sessions. We make no charge for our service and raise most of the £250,000 which are the annual running costs, ourselves. All donations, large or small, are most gratefully received.”
Feeling Blue At Steps! Article written by Janet Russell
Staff and children at the Steps Centre for Conductive Education wore blue clothing to raise awareness for Conductive Education week. The centre in Shepshed offers a free service for children who have movement-limiting conditions such as Down’s syndrome and cerebral palsy. The centre also supports the families of the children who attend sessions from across all areas of the East Midlands. Conductive Education is the name given to a remarkable programme which helps children who are differently abled to develop their physical, cognitive, emotional and social skills, enabling them to live as independently as possible. It was founded in the mid-fifties by Professor Peto in Hungary and is based on the premise that everyone can make progress, no matter what their starting point. Professor Peto was quite revolutionary in that he focused on ability and not disability. This is the message which is shouted loud and clear at Steps! During the week, staff, pupils and some parents wore blue, which is the logo colour for Conductive Education, to help raise awareness of this holistic approach to helping children with motor dysfunction or delay.
Julia concluded by saying, “Steps relies solely on donations to be able to run their centre and 100% of all money raised is spent on the children and the facilities for them. I am appealing to everyone to help Mark and our family to raise as much money as possible by donating to the Just Giving page. Without this centre and its wonderful staff I really don’t know what we would have done.”
The staff wore blue Superman tops which is very appropriate since they all do such a ‘super’ job!
Donating through Just Giving is simple, speedy and secure. Go to the website and search for Julia Grosvenor Brighton Marathon 2019.
Centre manager, Janet Russell said, “To find out more about Steps and the many ways in which you can help raise the £250,000 which is needed every year to finance this amazing and much-needed facility visit www.stepscentre.org.uk”
To discover more about Steps go to www.stepscentre.org.uk
One parent commented, “The Steps team help children in a fun and positive environment. They can see the untapped potential in every Steps child. They really believe in these very special children.”

Friends Of The Charnwood Forest Article written by Dr D McNeil
The talk at our meeting on the 18th of this month was given by Mr P Tyldesley, Director of the Bradgate Trust, on the subject of ‘Colourful Characters of the Bradgate Park’. Certainly some of their names were equally colourful. For example, in the reign of Edward the Confessor the land was owned by a Mr Ulf. Later it was owned in turn by the Beaumont family, the de Quincys, de Ferrers and lastly the Greys – rather a let-down namewise, it would seem, but they stayed for 500 years. In 1928 the Park went up for sale and bought by Charles Bennion, who gave it to the people of Leicestershire. The first mention of a deer park dates form 1241, when it was much smaller than it is now. Over the years bits of land were added and other bits taken away – usually to pay for debts incurred by the family. Cropston reservoir occupies one of the latter ‘bits’. About the time it passed to the people the council had added more land, and as well an agreement was reached with the trustees of Bradgate Wood to bring that under the Bradgate Trust as well. The house was the ambition of the son of Elizabeth Woodville who was one of those powerful women ultimately of the royal household. It was her grandson who finally finished the project in about 1520. It was occupied until 1732 when the new owner prefered one of his other houses. The Grey family were one of those moderately successful families of their age. They seemed to be politically adaptable, changing sides several times during the Civil War, though not always at the right time. They were good at having their lands confiscated, then restored to them. They slowly accumulated titles, often it seems by marriage, and they were good at not producing heirs. This latter strength meant that often distant relatives occupied Bradgate in the absence of an heir, and did result in 1732 when the relative preferred his current dwelling to Bradgate House. The outstanding name, of course, is Lady Jane, the ‘9-days queen’, though for four days before she was proclaimed the country was in limbo. This was thanks to Henry VIII declaring children of his previous marriages illegitimate. Nobody knew where they stood when he shoffled off. Mary stepped in and order was restored. At this moment the Greys demonstrated their political versitility which resulted in yet another family talent – having their heads chopped off. The last Grey of note seems to have been George Harry (1828-1883), who had a bit of a gambling problem; he took up owning race horses, and even had a race track around Old John tower. He actually lived in Field Head House, and when he died he left it to his widow to restore the family fortunes. The ‘Friends’ meet in the Woodhouse Eaves village hall at 7.30 p.m. once a month as well as organising visits in the summer.

Calling All Knitters - Keep Those Knitting Needles Clicking For The Big Knit! Article written by Peter Ralphs
The Big Knit campaign continues through 2019 and Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is calling on Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to keep knitting or join in for the first time! Whether a knitting ninja, purling pro, crochet connoisseur or just keen to have a go it’s time to get wild about wool and join the Big Knit. Now in its 15th year, the campaign needs to recruit more knitters to help create an impressive 1.6 million hats to adorn innocent smoothie bottles. For each be-hatted smoothie sold, Age UK receives 25p, and that money helps the Charity support older people who are facing later life alone. Tony Donovan, Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland said: “We need local people to join us and help knit as many miniature hats as possible to help us hit our huge 80,000 local target by July 2019. It’s such a fun campaign to get behind and it does so much to help older people in our area. The money raised will make a big difference to the lives of older people by funding our hugely important services and classes. These services, which include Day Care, dementia support, Men in Sheds and befriending amongst so many others, give local older people the chance to come along and make friends, learn new skills and most importantly have fun.” Last year alone, more than one million hats were lovingly created nationally, with designs including the hugely popular unicorn, grizzly bear, fluffy sheep and desert island. For more information on The Big Knit contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland on 0116 2992233 or visit www.ageuk.org.uk/leics/getinvolved/fundraising/the-big-knit/. Please send completed hats to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland at Lansdowne House, 113 Princess Road East, Leicester LE1 7LA or hand them in at any of our 24 shops or Resource Centres. This year’s hat knitting patterns are available to download - to find out more visit: www.ageuk.org.uk/bigknit or pop into any of our addresses to request a leaflet.

And Finally - Here Is A Summery Of The Nudes Article written by Angela Reddaway
It can be exasperating watching television and relying on subtitles for explanation. When you are hard of hearing, it is occasionally quite funny when words incorrectly captioned construe a totally different interpretation to the one the newswriter intentioned. But, add it to all the other frustrations that the deaf and those suffering from loss of hearing shoulder and you realise how difficult it is for us to make sense of communication.

Wenlo Riding For The Disabled Association (RDA) Group Is On The Lookout For A Very Special Horse Article written by Claire Maden
The group, which is based at Meadow School of Riding in Normantonon-Soar, offers children and adults with physical and/or learning disabilities and mental health issues an opportunity to ride and look after horses. At the moment a lack of suitable horses means that the group is limited in the riding opportunities we can offer to some of our older riders. Wenlo already owns one horse of its own - Charlie, a 15.1hh skewbald cob, who is an experienced RDA horse and is able to carry our heavier disabled riders. We closely monitor the weight of rider that Charlie is allowed to carry, and the amount of work that he does during a day. The RDA also enforces strict limits on the weights that horses doing RDA work are allowed to carry, in the interest of horse welfare. Having only one horse available for some of our teenagers and adults to ride has meant that we have been unable to offer some of our riders the opportunity take part in our activities as regularly as they would like - and hardworking Charlie desperately needs to share his workload! It has also meant that we have been unable to offer all of our riders the chance to take part in RDA competitions. We have been fortunate enough to secure a grant from Wooden Spoon - the children's charity of rugby - to help us cover the cost of buying an additional horse that our teenagers can ride, but unfortunately finding the perfect horse for our purposes has not been easy. We have viewed many horses and even found two that seemed perfect for us - but one turned out to have been misrepresented by the seller, and another failed a veterinary inspection, which made them both too risky to take on as RDA horses. Do you know of a horse that may suit our purposes? We are ideally looking for a 16-16.2hh weight-carrying cob. A laidback and calm temperament is a must! As we need a horse that has had a good basic education and plenty of experience of the world, we would only be able to consider horses over 8 years of age. Although we don't have an upper age limit in mind, we do need a horse that is fit and healthy enough to work reliably every day, and is able to turn its hoof to the entire range of RDA activities from simple walk sessions to dressage, endurance and even jumping. Meadow School of Riding, where the horse is to be kept, is also home to Ashmount and Ruddington RDA so the new horse would benefit riders from all three groups. For further information please contact Wenlo RDA Group on 07860 245675.
Sometimes, the subtitles trail so far behind that the task is abandoned and the viewer left with a tantalizing message such as ……… “as a result, Alice Meadows, a nurse from Bromwich will not now be able to get……….” Get what? A job, half a dozen eggs, her pension? Subtitles are useful; other things help too. We know it is irritating for our hearing friends and family to have to repeat sentences constantly – even if you don’t actually tell us, we can see it written on your face. And technological advancements have improved our lives no end. Audio devices and hearing aids, loop systems, agencies for the hard of hearing that devise aids and awareness to help us hear more clearly, are invaluable. What a long way we have come from the unwieldy, crackling contraptions that our grandparents wore to help increase the volume. For many of us, using a hearing aid will help. Up-to-date technology now offers us better clarification and sound quality. For some, surgery will offer an improvement in hearing. But there are limitations as well as benefits with most forms of help and learning lipreading skills can be such a help to us. Lipreading is a technique to aid speech understanding by watching the movement of lips, face and tongue when their accompanying sound is not sufficiently loud or clear to hear. Contextual comprehension can further clarify what the speaker might be saying. It takes time and patience to learn and the expertise of a good tutor to teach the skill. But we desperately need more tutors to teach lipreading. Not just to us but to our friends and family as well – so we can all communicate with each other more effectively. Facing the listener when we speak, enunciating clearly, checking out whether the deaf person has understood. It all sounds so serious but believe me, there is plenty of humour in the process too, particularly when mistakes are made. One of the lighter features of lipreading classes is sharing some of the embarrassments and funny moments with others in the same position. It makes us feel less silly somehow about what we’ve misunderstood. Yes, there are many disabilities more severe than deafness – we know that well. Because many of us suffer from other illnesses and disabilities as well as coping with not being able to hear clearly. We know what it is like to receive an unwelcome diagnosis without fully understanding it, from a consultant who unwittingly delivers it in a muffled voice with his or her head averted. So come on – a plea to you good folk out there. There must be plenty of people with the potential to make good lipreading tutors. People who care enough to help us communicate more productively with them and with each other. We need you - particularly we need you in the Leicestershire/Nottinghamshire area. The Leslie Edwards Trust is offering the opportunity to train as a lipreading tutor by offering a professional qualification which involves a one-year distance learning course. The cost of course fees, travel and books will be covered by the Trust. Tutors are freelance but paid the ATLA (Association of Teachers of Lipreading to Adults) recommended hourly rate, plus travel and expenses. Being a tutor is a part-time occupation and generally involves teaching on average three two-hourly sessions weekly, based on a 30 week year. If you would like to find out about this challenge, please contact leslieedwardstrust@gmail.com Thank you for reading this.

Town Mouse – Country Mouse Article written by Reverend Lydia Humphreys
Oaks in Charnwood Spring Fair, 27th May, Oaks Road, LE12 9YD Whenever I meet someone they ask me “where are you from?” I answer “I am from Shepshed” but that’s not what they mean. Having grown up in East London I have retained an unmistakable accent that sometimes sets me apart and yet here I am, the Vicar of a town and country parish. With my wellies in my car boot, I have received a warm welcome from local farmers, one of whom allowed me to join him during the Harvest: a new experience for me: town mouse becomes a country mouse! St James Church, Oaks in Charnwood, which is part of my parish, is set in idyllic countryside which has breath taking views which I deeply appreciate coming from a city background. In an ever changing world, it is good to stop and appreciate the beauty we have around us. The Oaks Spring Fair represents for me all that is wonderful in my new parish: lovely country side, good people and excellent food with something for all ages, young and old alike. Come along and join us on Monday 27th May 2019, 10am – 4pm. There will be entertainment for the whole family with a wide selection of stalls, live entertainment and attractions including: heavy horse log pulling demonstrations, dog show (Apollo’s Angels), inflatable colour maze for children, excellent food, local artisan crafts, beer and gin stalls, face painting, games, hog roast, quad bikes, flower festival and much more. This is a great way to support local businesses while having a good time in the beautiful setting of Oaks in Charnwood. Entry cost: £3 per adult, under 16’s free and dogs welcome. Stalls are still available for booking Mary Hayward Email: oakscountryfair@shepshedandoaks.co.uk Tel: 07545 817664
A massive thank you must go
to all the folks who supported us and to our willing team of
volunteers. We see new faces every time we organise these events which is brilliant. Plus
more Church members turn up to help whether preparing the meals, washing/cleaning up
and the youngsters who wait on
tables. Without all of these kind generous people there would not be such a great time and
wonderful financial outcome. The floor in our upstairs room has now been installed and
paid for. We are in discussions regarding our next project.
Given the success of previous Spuds I suspect we will be
organising another such event
in the Autumn. Hopefully other fundraising events will happen during Spring and Summer.

Two professional photographers visited the club, firstly Keith Cooper, who is based in Leicester, gave a talk entitled ‘Black & White Printing/ Architecture’ and a few weeks later Nat Coalson ARPS., an American photographer now living in the Midland,s gave a talk entitled ‘Abstract Photography’. The second Competition League event of the year took place in late February and Angela Edwards took first place in the Themed class for ‘Portraits/People’ and Alan Harris CPAGB took first place in the Open subject class. The annual 3-club image matching competition took place in March judged by Peter Cheetham HONPAGB from Long Eaton the final scores being Ashby Camera Club 60 points, Shepshed Camera Club 44 points and Coalville Camera Club 32 points. Cllr Keith Harris
T: 01509 557701 E: cllr.keith.harris@charnwood.gov.uk Hathern is buzzing with activity. We are halfway through the first brochure for Hathern Together covering the first half of the year. Another one of Ben Hardy’s brilliant creations will be dropping through your letter boxes for the second half in due course equally packed with events in this amazingly active village. Hathern Band are playing a fundraising concert at the church on April 6th starting at 19.00. Earlier that day the church will hold its monthly coffee and cake morning with books and bric-a-brac for sale. This is held every first Saturday in the month. Many intrepid Hatherners will not be going to that coffee morning because they will be doing the first leg of a 33-mile sponsored walk to raise funds for the community library. The second leg will follow on Sunday 7th. Please sponsor someone you know who is daft enough to take on the whole of the Charnwood Round. They’ve even got me doing it!! Oakley Grange Farm are holding an Easter Egg Hunt and an Easter Bonnet competition on Friday 19th at 12.00. The Community Library has put together a wide range of extra regular activities to make the building a community hub. Toddlers are invited to ‘All Join In’ with fun activities run by Ann Clark and Gill Rockett. I joined them recently after the event for World Book Day and had great fun reading a book with the kids. This fun session is on alternate Thursdays 10.30 – 11. The new art group has been a great success and runs on Mondays from 2 – 4. Bring your own materials and come and learn, share skills and get creative. The Craft and Chat sessions are very popular and happen every Wednesday 2 – 4 at a cost of £2. The library has wifi, a desktop computer, a laminator, printing facilities and 2 Kindle Fires. We intend to use the Kindles to help people who struggle with IT but would like to learn. If you fear computers or just need a boost to your confidence with help from the library volunteers, please get in touch to arrange this. We will find someone to teach you. The library will have a stall in the church during and after the children’s service at Easter.

Borough Cllr Christine Radford T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com
We can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough Council. We deal with housing problems, (such as trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour, whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property. We also deal with planning issues. Planning P/19/0334/2 – 25 Banbury Drive – 2m overall crown reduction of secondary branches 1x English Oak (Tree Preservation Order) P/19/0275/2 – 18 Fairway Road – Proposed single storey extension to rear of dwelling P/19/0224/2 – 6 Deacon Close – Proposed single storey and two storey extension to rear, and dormer extension to rear of dwelling. P/19/0444/2 – 18 Woodpecker Way – proposed conservatory to rear of dwelling P/19/0373/2 - Land at Oakley Road and Hallamford Road – Discharge of condition 3 of P/17/0246/2 relating to details of Northern boundary treatment including pedestrian link. P/19/0375/2 – Land at Oakley Road and Hallamford Road – Discharge of conditions 11 and 13 of P/13/1838/2 relating to landscaping layout and green infrastructure biodiversity management plan. P/19/0439/2 – 42 Orchard Close – erection of two storey side extension, single storey rear extension and single storey extension to front of dwelling. P/19/0352/2 – Tickow Lane/Anson Road – proposed erection of 169 dwellings and associated works (reserved matters – P/18/0586/2(outline) refers) – this is the detailed application of house types together with planting schemes P/19/0092/2 – 9 Britannia Street – erection of boundary wall/fence at land north P/19/0468/2 – 22 Leicester Road – erection of detached two storey dwelling and formation of car parking area to frontage. Garendon Park- Persimmon Homes Persimmon homes are holding a Community liaison meeting and both Cllr Radford and Tassell have managed to get an invite to go along to this first meeting. As the majority of you are aware both Cllrs voted against this development, unfortunately planning approval was supported by both Labour and Conservatives from other areas of the Borough. But, has it is has been given planning approval we need to make sure we get the best out of a bad situation for the people of Shepshed and surrounding areas. CCTV Update The long awaited CCTV for the centre of Shepshed is now well underway. All the services have or are being installed as we write. The cameras themselves should have been fitted week commencing 25th March (2 x Market Place 2 x Bullring and 1 x Hall Croft) and hopefully commissioned soon after this date. It is hoped that the whole project will be up and running by the end of March. All residents and businesses affected by these cameras have been contacted by letter and any concerns they may have had, have been addressed. Without the help of Charnwood Borough Council for the grant of £24,000, the Task and Finish Group of the Town Team, this project would never have come to fruition. Initially the installation of CCTV in the centre of Shepshed was not supported by the Labour Councillors on the Town Council. The Conservative Councillors on the Town Council have always supported CCTV. Hall Croft Your Borough Cllrs and the Town Council have been working with Charnwood to get the owner of the premises in Hall Croft known as the Fabric Centre and Café which are both in a dangerous state as well has structurally unsound to do something about it. Charnwood have replied that this is on their books, and the owner is reluctant to deal with this site voluntarily so Charnwood will be looking at formal notices. We are afraid that this will be a long drawn out process which has been on-going for a number of years. It was brought to Charnwood’s attention some years ago, but at the time they were of the opinion that the premises had not fallen into a dangerous state at that time. New Dates Released For Food Safety Course Food handlers who have not received any formal training are being encouraged to sign up to a food safety course. Charnwood Borough Council runs the Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering and offers people the opportunity to learn the basics of food hygiene. The course is aimed at people who are starting out in the catering
industry and require some formal training. The course will be held on several dates throughout the next 12 months at the Council’s Southfields Offices in Loughborough, the proposed dates are:April 4th July 4th October 24th January 3rd, 2020. People who attend will learn about legislation, food safety hazards, temperature control, food handling and principles of safe food storage. The cost of the course is £50 (including VAT) per person. There are a limited number of places available on each course, so booking early to avoid disappointment is advised. For further information and to book, please contact a member of the food safety team on 01509 634656 or visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/ foodsafetycourse. Changes To Housing Register In Charnwood Charnwood is changing the way in which it handles applications for social housing to ensure services are helping those most in need. The Council has revised its housing allocation policy to focus on people who have the greatest and most urgent housing needs and who have strong connections to the borough. This means that some people who are currently on the housing register, including many who are in the lowest housing needs band, are unlikely to qualify for the register under the new policy. These changes mean that Charnwood can target services towards helping those who are most in need. Under the current system Charnwood have many people who qualify to be on the housing register but whose chances of being offered social housing are slim. There are also examples of people being on the housing register for many years but have never made a bid for a property. The Councils aim is to support those most in need and with strong links to the borough, as part of these changes; the Council are also improving the application system to give customers a better online experience. Under the new policy people will be put into one of three bands, other changes include amending the local connection criteria from six out of the last 12 months’ residence within Charnwood to two years’. The policy is designed to prioritise applicants who have the greatest and most urgent housing needs. A new online Housing Application form is being introduced and all current applicants will need to re-apply online by 30th April 2019. The link to the website where this form will be accessible is www.charnwoo.gov.uk/homes No properties will be advertised between 27th March and 10th April. The first property advert cycle on the new system is due to be 11th April to 16th April, 2019. New Rounds Of Charnwood Grants To Benefit Community Community groups and charities are being invited to apply for funding in 2019. The Charnwood Grants scheme is run by Charnwood Borough Council in a bid to help local organisations, charities and community groups’ access funding support. So far the Council has awarded around £100,000 during the 18/19 rounds of funding. There’s a range of grants on offer including: • Community Development and Engagement – This grant can provide up to £10,000 for organisations currently running projects with community benefit Charnwood. • Community Facilities Grants and Feasibility Studies – The community facilities grants scheme can award funding of up to £20,000 to a maximum of 50% of the cost of a project which assist with the renovation and improvement of community buildings, and smallscale environmental improvement schemes. • Sports and Leisure Grants – a variety of grant funding for individuals, clubs and organisations in need of additional finance to run their projects and activities. The latest application forms, deadlines and more information are available at www.charnwood.gov.uk/charnwoodgrants, email grants@ charnwood.gov.uk or call 01509 634730. On-Going Issues Planning and Anti-Social behaviour (majority of it confidential) is still taking up a large amount of our time. Do not hesitate to contact us should you have issues you wish to discuss with us.

County Cllr Christine Radford T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com
As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges onto the highways/footpaths, social services etc. Don’t Be Afraid To Say No To Cold Callers Trading Standards have seen an increase in reports of cold callers offering gardening and roofing work. The reports include overcharging for unnecessary work, asking for more money than originally quoted, following residents into their home to see where cash is kept and claiming to be from the local council. Remember: • It is ok to say NO if you don’t want the work done. • Check the ID of people calling at your door. A genuine trader won’t mind if you take a moment to check out their legitimacy. • If someone knocks on your door and you don’t know who they are, don’t let them in. • If there is any doubt, don’t agree to any work. • Rogue traders can be reported to Trading Standards on 03454 04 05 06 or dial 101 or 999 in an emergency. Skylink I have now had a reply from Trentbarton regarding my request to look into diverting the Skylink bus through Shepshed then into Hathern. The reason being I am being continually asked to get a bus operators to cover the area of Shepshed just off Hathern Road as well as a bus which will go from Shepshed to Hathern. I have already approached other bus operators and got nowhere. The reply from Skylink/Trentbarton went on to state:“The area surrounding East Midlands Airport is one which we have made a number of developments of recent years on our network including extending to Coalville, adding a fast route to Nottingham and most recently extended a route through to the airport from Ilkeston. The network has developed over time and reflects the continued growth in not only the tourism but also the employment opportunities and access to work. There are now nearly 10,000 employees who work in the gateway area surrounding the airport. There are future expansion plans to businesses in that area including the rail freight interchange, which will see funding support to kick start network developments as well as improving existing networks as the area readies itself to have a doubling of workforce in the coming years. As part of this there is a working partnership of local councils and businesses alongside bus operators working on creating a network that is fit for purpose. This is an ongoing process and I will ensure that your comments are taken into consideration when we are defining the network. Whilst I cannot promise anything in terms of dates, frequency or routes I can ssure you that it is being independently investigates alongside our own commercial investigations to ascertain the best options to meet the demands of the market. I will keep you informed as this review develops.” I will keep pursuing getting a bus to cover this area of Shepshed. Events Real Nappy events are taking place in Coalville Sure start on 5th April and 3rd May. Composting events at the Plant Fair Donnington Le Health on 4th May and at the Food Gusto Fair in Ashby on 25th May. More information regarding events can be go by contacting 0116 3056376. What To Do If You’ve Fallen Victim: • Let your bank know as soon as possible and monitor your bank statements regularly for any unusual activity. • If you suspect your identity may have been stolen you can check your credit file quickly and easily online. Use a reputable service provider and follow up on any unexpected or suspicious results. • If you have been a victim of fraud or cyber-crime, report it to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040. Advance Notice Of A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) A TTRO is to be made for the following location: Bardon Road Coalville/ Bardon, Grange Road/Hugglescote and Stephens Way Coalville. The proposed TTRO is to allow Aggregate Industries to facilitate carriageway improvements and improved access to Bardon Quarry. The closure will be between Birch Tree Roundabout and Waterworks Road as follows: 19.00 Thursday 18th April to 02.00 Tuesday 23rd April 2019. 19.00 Friday 26th April to 02.00 Monday 29th April 2019. 19.00 Friday 3rd May to 02.00 Tuesday 7th May 2019. I am aware that these roads are not in Shepshed, but it is an area that will be travelled by residents of Shepshed, I therefore thought it would be of interest. Policing In Shepshed As County Councillor I have held meetings with residents regarding Anti-social behaviour, the police, officers from the Anti-social behaviour team at Charnwood, a representative from the MP’s office and Nicky Morgan MP to discuss aspects of policing in Shepshed especially antisocial behaviour. Unfortunately I have found just like the Labour Councillors on the Town Council, that I got nowhere with the LABOUR Police and Crime Commissioner in getting more police in Shepshed. Lord Willy Bach, the Police and Crime Commissioner has just increased the precept for the police by 12%, let’s hope that some of that will find its way to Shepshed, not just in the centre of Leicester. If Labour Cllrs on the Town Council could not get the support of Police and Crime Commissioner then I am not sure how they expected me as a Conservative to get anywhere. Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such as overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com or christine.radford@leics.gov. uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road, 10-11am. No appointment is necessary. Due to the forthcoming Borough and Town Council elections on 2nd May and Purdah I am not allowed to hold surgeries. My next surgery will therefore be held on 4th May.
