Shepshed History Society Mrs Sally Henshaw was the guest speaker booked to entertain members of the Shepshed History Society on July 10th. The subject chosen was an entertaining but thought provoking talk about the disastrous plague that ravaged London and the home counties in 1665, when literally thousands of people died in unspeakable agony once the plague had taken hold on them. Unknown to everyone at the time, the source was due to the fleas that made their home on the countless black rats that abounded in the city due to the appalling unhygienic habits of the inhabitants. Meanwhile the court and rich people were able to flee to other parts of the country and managed to escape it. And so Mrs Henshaw went into great detail relating how the symptoms manifested themselves and how various so called tradespeople were employed to deal with this catastrophic event. Then she went on to explain how the epidemic spread to Eyam, a small village in Derbys thought to be due to a bolt of cloth from London harbouring the dreaded fleas. However due to their bravery of keeping themselves isolated from the rest of the country, the plague was contained therein and did not spread. Fortunately for future generations this occurrence was to be relevant in today's modern world when experts were able to use the gene pattern of the villagers not affected in finding a cure for Aids. The local vicar's wife, who cared for the plague victims mentioned one day to her husband what a lovely day it was and 'how sweet the air smelled'. Tragically that was well known symptom showing that she too was now infected with the plague. Sadly she passed away a few days later and now there is a large tombstone in the graveyard honouring all her selfless work in caring for the afflicted. On August 14th there will not be a talk at Glenmore Centre due to an outdoor meeting to Hough Mill, Swannington. Will members down to come please arrive at the Mill after 6.15 when the gate will be first opened in readiness for the tour at 6.30pm.
MILLS-STONE FENCING & PAVING
'Tis pure fiction of heart, soul and mind
Illusion, confusion, all mixed in the broth All for your representation
Who represents you with his nose in the trough This system a scourge of all nations
At least we're still free to make our own choice 'Mongst dictatorships and sordid regimes
But does a democratic dictatorship give you a voice? When all's controlled from the unseen
If you continue to be fooled by this scandal
And stay submissive just like the church mouse
Then you have no need for to fear of the vandal For there's vandals galore in the house!

Shepshed Probus Club
Free 'Everyone In Harmony' And “Time To Sing“ Course
Shepshed Ramblers
At the meeting on 2nd July at J23 Restaurant, our President Mr Horace Lister welcomed our members and after club business and our usual funny tales from Stan White, he introduced our speakers Kevin and Ellen Grimley who, after a 4 course lunch, gave a talk on coracles.
Due to the overwhelming success of last year’s Learn to sing course in February and October we are holding another course from Monday 3rd September through to November. This one will be open to both men and women, boys and girls as part of our 44 year celebration
Shepshed Ramblers will next walk on Sunday 19 August departing Shepshed Market Place at 09.30 for a six and half mile walk ‘Rushing Towards West Leake Hills’; and between 2.00 and 3.00 pm. Please take both a coffee break and packed lunch. If you require any further information please contact Margaret on 01509 600510 or Bernie on 01509 828328. A warm welcome to new members is guaranteed.
Kevin described the boats as being constructed of ash lathes, calico and 4 coats of bitumen. They are not allowed on Welsh rivers but are allowed on the River Severn. The lathes are interwoven with the front being flatter than the back. They are then pulled up to the top rim and fixed into position after which the calico is stretched over the structure and stapled to the rim, with any excess material being neatly pleated and stapled in place. Several coats of bitumen are then painted onto the calico to make it waterproof. Each coracle is made to measure and Kevin holds classes to teach novice coracleers how to make their own. Coracles are notoriously difficult to master on the water until you have experience - the expression ‘don’t try this at home’ comes to mind! Club members had the opportunity to study a coracle close up and to look at many photographs Kevin had brought with him. On completion of a very interesting talk our President asked everyone to show their appreciation and before the meeting closed, he reminded members that the next meeting would be held on Monday 6th August when our speaker would talk about bees.
So come on why not be part of 'Everyone in Harmony' The free 'Everyone in Harmony' course is being held by Heart of England Chorus at the Birstall Social Club, Wanlip Lane, Birstall LE4 4JS Aimed at both newcomers and those who have not sung for a while, the course is to encourage more men and women young and old to take up singing, which is increasingly acknowledged as being an aid to a healthy lifestyle. There are many men who would love to sing but most never get around to trying, don’t have the opportunity or maybe are too self-conscious to give it a go but the simple fact is that just about everyone can sing. Attendees learn within a group which makes it less daunting, there are no embarrassing public auditions and it’s With the professional help of our Musical Director Ian Phillips and Assistant MD Jim Pollock participants will be helped to discover their voice, learn the techniques of making the most of it and how to use it in four-part acappella harmony with others. There’s no need to worry about reading music as the teaching methods employed are designed to help quickly learn specially-commissioned songs. For men and women who haven't sung for a few years this course is the perfect way to ease their vocal chords back into action. Regular singers may also find the course useful to learn different voice parts, in a relaxed and friendly environment. The course will run from 7.30pm to 10.00pm All the material will be provided with access to course teaching materials. 5 Ways To Use Balloons At Your Party By Timmy @PartySaveSmile.co.uk Hi everybody, Timmy here, This Summer we have been blown away – with requests for inflated Balloons. It seems you guys love a party in the hot weather! Balloons can make any occasion super special, and add the finishing touch. The right Balloons play a big part in decorating your venue perfectly. I thought I would share 5 ways you could use balloons to great effect at your party.
Shepshed Lions Club News Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders have been fund raising in the community to purchase a number of Community Public Access Defibrillators (CPADS) to place in the communities across the Borough of Charnwood. On Saturday 30th June 2018 a Charity Dinner, with an auction and a raffle, with live music was held at Livio’s Restaurant, The Hallcroft, Shepshed with the kind permission of Livio and Enza Buttarazzi, the proprietors of this lovely restaurant. Thanks to the generosity of those attending the event, a total of £3000 was raised to purchase more CPADS in our communities. The funds were boosted by the generosity of local businessmen, Mick Sloan, Nev Middleton and Richard Waldron who all made additional donations after the auction and raffle to boost he funds to the magnificent total. Shepshed Lions Club President, and Coordinator of the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders said, “ What an amazing evening we had. The food was fantastic, the ambience electric, and “Ginger” Gee, who was the auctioneer for the evening was magnificent. My wife, Susan and I were overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone present. The funds raised will be used to buy three more CPADS. I would like to thank everyone who supported us on the night with their generosity, all of the people who donated all of the auction lots, and those who donated raffle prizes. It was a very memorable evening.” Three new CPADS have been fitted in the community by the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders. One has been fitted on the wall of the Post Office on Forest Road, Loughborough, the outside wall of EMC Tiles, Unit 1, Prince William Road, Loughborough and the other at the HN Thai Derm Spa and Guest House, 146, Leicester Road Loughborough. These have been fitted with the kind permission of the owners of all of the premises. The Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders are offering free training in Basic Life Support and use of the defibrillator to give members of the community the knowledge, skills and confidence to help a patient who is suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Whilst the training is free of charge, any donations to the scheme would be gratefully received. For more information please contact Scheme Coordinator Bob Lilley on 07585 772902 or by e-mail at thelilleys15@gmail.com
1) Balloon Bouquets: Put a few Balloons together to make a Balloon bouquet. Matching the right Balloons together and co-ordinating them perfectly lets you make the perfect statement. Balloon bouquets are visually stunning and are a great way to celebrate something special! They also make a great Table Centrepiece! 2) Bubble Balloons: Bubble Balloons offer a unique statement for your celebration. Whether they are filled with Confetti, Feathers or even more Balloons. One thing is for sure a Bubble balloon will give your party the wow factor. 3) Balloons as Candles: You can even add a Balloon as a Cake Topper or instead of candles. In fact they look great on any sweet treat such as doughnuts and cupcakes. 4) Balloon Phrases: Spell out your message in style by creating a Banner out of Balloons. Whether you need words or numbers, make your message extra personal by making it out of our range of coloured letter and numbers. 5) Traditional Foil Balloons: Whilst not the most creative use of Balloons sometimes simplicity is best. A simple on theme messaged 18” with colour co-ordinated ribbon and weight is perfect for the occasion. Choose your theme and design, and we will co-ordinate this with the perfect weight and ribbon colour to complement your balloon. So if you are planning a party and need some balloons, why not come and visit our Coalville Showroom – we are open to the public and have free parking available on site. We inflate balloons on site to order and we even offer same day Click and Collect to save you waiting. Don’t forget, you can follow us on Facebook and Instragram by searching for @partysavesmile…..much love Timmy x
The residents of Highfields Drive, Loughborough have supported the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders project to purchase and fit defibrillators in locking cabinets across the communities of Charnwood. They were organised by Mrs. Penny Ward who arranged a yard sale on Sunday 1st July 2018. The sun was shining brightly and several houses were adorned with bunting to build the atmosphere. The event was well supported by local residents and resulted in a donation of £453.36p being made towards the purchase of another defibrillator. This generous donation was a fantastic boost to the project and scheme Coordinator Bob Lilley said, “ The residents of Highfields Drive are amazing. They all worked together to help us to provide vital life saving equipment that is accessible to the public in an emergency. I would like to thank all of those who participated and others who supported the event. A special thank you to Penny who organized the event. Training sessions will be arranged for local residents in how to deliver effective CPR and how to use the defibrillator will be arranged in the near future. Shepshed Lions Club has been keeping an ear to the ground and this is evidenced by the donation of £200 made to the Shepshed Amateurs Football Club. The donation came about following one of our members seeing an article on Facebook where the goal posts at the Little Haw Lane playing fields were vandalised. The Football Club needed to purchase new goal posts at a cost of around £800. They had started fund raising and Shepshed Lions Club decided to help the club to buy the new goal posts before the new football season starts. Lion President Bob Lilley said, “ This donation will help the football club to replace the goal posts that were needlessly vandalised. This will benefit the club but it will also benefit a lot of local children who use the park and goal posts. We are very happy to help the club to replace their goal posts.” Shepshed Lions Club is pleased to announce the acts for this year’s 9th Annual Charity Carnival that will take place on Bank Holiday Monday 27th August 2018 in Glenmore Park, Shepshed. They are “Dangerous Steve”, a man who juggles with chain saws! “K9 Quackers”, a display using Sheepdogs and Ducks, “Mad Dominic” a really funny street entertainer who many of you will know from previous carnivals and the Christmas Market, and “Timeless” a local singing duo. There will also be the ever popular “Punch and Judy Show” for all the children. A 9 hole crazy golf course. The usual attractions including the Funfair, children’s maze, bouncy castles, the Pink Cadillac cars, a wide variety of stalls, BBQ and Tea Tent and lots of other things to do and enjoy. There are still a few stalls left. If you want a stall at this year’s Carnival please contact Lion Susan Lilley at thelilleys15@gmail.com or on 07429535499. As you will imagine, the Shepshed Lions Club 9th Annual Charity Carnival is probably the biggest event in the Shepshed Calendar and it involves a lot of planning before the event and a lot of work on the day setting up the stalls and arena. We are looking for some help please. If you are able to spare some time to help on the day, you are of good character, and interested in helping out your local Lions Club, please contact Lions President Bob Lilley at thelilleys15@gmail.com or on 07585 772902. I am sure you will enjoy it!

Shepshed Foodbanks New Van Shepshed Foodbank is celebrating after being loaned a van to help volunteers collect food donations and buy additional supplies when necessary. The van has been loaned to the charity by BT Fleet in Leicester which is also going to tax, MOT and service the vehicle for the foodbank. Foodbank chairman Glennis Wilcox said she was overwhelmed by the news as the charity had been looking to secure a vehicle to help with its work. “This is fantastic news. We really are very grateful to Jim Lawrence and everyone at BT Fleet who have agreed to tax, Mot and service the van for us. It will make collecting food donations and buying additional supplies so much easier and my car can now have a well-earned rest!“ She also revealed the foodbank had secured a grant from Loughborough University and together with two very generous anonymous cash donations and a fund-raising Indian meal held at the Spice Lounge in Shepshed, they are now able to insure the vehicle for the next three years. The foodbank is currently handing out more than 45 food parcels a week to single people, couples, families with young children and pensioners. Anyone wishing to help in any way can contact the Foodbank on 07594639668 or by email at shepshedfoodbank@gmail.com

Shepshed & District Camera Club The members of Shepshed and District Camera Club are already preparing themselves for the new season starting on Tuesday, 11th. September at the Council Offices in Charnwood Road. A good mix of lectures, practical evenings and a few competitions have been arranged together with the opportunity to mix with other local clubs as well. A busy few weeks through the spring drew the 2017-2018 season to a close with two excellent lectures, the first from Chris Dale, a Nottingham based photographer who gave an enjoyable illustrated lecture about Natural History in the local area and the second being Valerie Dalling with her talk about how she approaches landscape photography, much of it in the Derbyshire countryside. The final competition for the season took place in early May judged by the well known local photographer Peter Jones, ARPS DPAGB BPE3* . After passing his usual interesting and helpful comments about each photograph Peter chose a print by Sue Hutton, LRPS, entitled ‘A Fish Supper’ as the winner of the Close Up/Still Life class and a digital image by Alan Harris entitled ‘Trees, Snow and Mist’ as the winner of the Open class. Prior to the start of the new season there will be a display of prints by the Club members at Shepshed Library from 18th to 25th. June and hopefully after the season gets under way the club is expecting to run some beginners sessions starting in September. Anyone interested in this please, or becoming a member should get in touch with the Club Chairman whose full details are on the Club website at www.shepshedcameraclub.co.uk

We recognise the support and enjoyable events they provide for Shepshed residents. Please contact Angie (01509 508040) at the Volunteer Centre if you would like to help with activities or events, you’ll be warmly welcomed” Angie Whitmore “Shepshed Volunteer Centre would like to thank Shepshed Town Councils and staff for their continued support of the volunteer centre. Without this essential funding we would not be able to continue to run our services looking after some of the most vulnerable and isolated in our society”
Shepshed And District Twinning: Sheppy Watches England And Les Bleus… One of our SDTA members was recently visiting friends in France and was invited to watch the football... and to her surprise there sat on the sofa was our mascot, Sheppy, already glued to the preliminary discussions.
Photo: Jane Payne from St Botolph’s Church Shepshed leads off the local ‘Christian Aid’ walk through Garendon Park.
Thank You To The People Of Shepshed And Oaks With the benefit of ‘Gift Aid’ donations, the people of Shepshed and Oaks in Charnwood, through five local churches raised over £3,100 this year towards the significant and positive work undertaken through ‘Christian Aid’, whose regional office is in Loughborough. The local group treasurer says ‘a big thank you to the community for such generosity, at a time of competing good causes, and financial pressures. Not only has this combined effort raised a magnificent sum, but is over a thousand pounds more than last year.’ Numerous events including a stroll through Garendon Park, cake and bring and buy stall, a breakfast and soup lunch, ‘smartie tube’ coin collection, together with the traditional limited house to house, and church Lenton collections etc.
Sheppy was disappointed that England lost the semi-final, and quite pleased that France then won the final. Had it been an England v France final he thought that the best team deserved to win. It seems that he is a diplomat too…. notice he is not waving a flag or wearing a team vest! and he has taken his blue beret off. Just now our twinning team are busy preparing for the Shepshed carnival on 27 August. There’s lots happening behind the scenes to make the day a fun visitor experience, so do call by our tent, talk to the team and get to know some of our members. You can • Find out about the association’s plans and programme • Find out about our twin town and identify it on a map • Enter some small English/French challenges and quizzes for all age ranges….. and win prizes. And then – why not join us! There’s no need to speak French. For more information and contact details visit our website, www.shepshedtwinning.co.uk or see us on Facebook - Shepshed and District Twinning Association.

County Councillor
Christine Radford
T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc. Camera Enforcement and School Keep Clear Signs Cabinet have approved the release of £0.5m to provide funding to better manage school parking concerns, through enforcement mandatory “School Keep Clear” markings. Procurement for a camera car for enforcement of zig-zag markings is currently underway for piloting at the beginning of the 2018 academic year. (September) Invites were sent out to 284 schools, 40 responses were received from schools who said they were interested in being part of the scheme. This follows on from concerns right across the County about parking outside of schools. It is hoped that this will create safer access to schools and improve safety around school gates and reduce school gate parking/ congestion, parking on pavements and yellow lines. Rural Roads Initiative proposed speed limit reductions The incidence of injury collisions on the rural road network in Leicestershire is an ongoing concern. Collision rates remain high on some routes despite an overall fall in collision on all other road types on the County’s network. Ongoing investigations are being undertaken on 38 routes which suffer from an injury collision rate that is above the national average of 197 injury collisions per billion vehicle kilometres travelled. The proposal seeks to reduce the national speed limit, which is 60mph on eleven of these routes with the highest collision rate down to 50mph. A couple of these roads are near to Shepshed, B591 Copt Oak Road Charley and Oaks Road/Abbey Road Charley. White arrows top of Charnwood Road I wish to report that I had not been made aware or consulted
on the new layout of the road at the junction of Charnwood Road with Ashby Road. I have received a large number of concerns raised about this new layout and have contacted County with those concerns. The junction has been altered so that the left lane only now turns left and the right lane goes straight over or turns right. Unfortunately some of the old markings are still in place causing problems. My concerns are that to go straight over you have to veer to the left in some cases in front of traffic turning left, these alterations have also caused problems with tailbacks as far back as Kings Road and blocking traffic trying to leave Gelders Hall. I understand that an on line petition has been set up by Lisa Vann on https://chn. ge/2NKUIqn and that a paper petition are in some outlets around Shepshed. I ask if you have concerns please sign one of these petitions and contact county on 0116 3050001 or email highwayscustomerservices@leics. gov.uk ; the more people who do, we might get the arrows removed and reinstated to before they were altered. Waiting Restrictions – Ring Fence A proposal was put on Facebook about waiting restrictions for Ring Fence. A meeting took place between the MP, URGO and County some time ago, which I did not attend as I was holiday. The meeting was arranged following residents’ concerns regarding lorries delivering to URGO causing traffic issues, hitting properties etc. I have had assurance from County that consultations with residents will be carried out before starting any legal process to implement the waiting restrictions. There does remain the fact that even if any waiting restrictions are implemented the lorries making these deliveries are of a significant size and are not particularly suited to these types of roads. Children Centres Review County have done a review on the number of Children’s Centres to be reduced from 36 to 18. The centre in Shepshed was originally proposed to be retained, however
following consultation and further research it is now proposed to be closed due to it not being in the best location and it is a long walk from local communities. It is on a school site, therefore fewer drop ins and low footfall. The space available is small and inflexible, not suitable for the future service needs, and in comparison to other local centres it has expensive running costs of £19,720. Health work has never been carried out in this centre as it is carried out in a health centre at a local doctor’s surgery. The majority of the children centres in the County had health work carried out in them, as this is not the case with Shepshed there will be no impact on this service. Engagement on Smart Libraries Smart Library technology enables customer self-access to library buildings without the presence of staff. Adaptations are currently underway across libraries including Shepshed. To date six libraries have been adapted with another eight scheduled between August and December this year. It is anticipated that full operation will start in April 2019. These libraries will provide a mix of staffed hours and self-service hours that combined will increase access to library sites by around 30 hours per week. Self-access means that library members will be able to use their library card to access the building outside of staffed hours. During self-access hours, Smart Library members can: • Borrow, return and renew library books using the self-service kiosks. • Pick up and borrow reserved items awaiting collection • Use public computers, photocopy, print and access Wi-Fi • Access the public library catalogue • Meet as a group free of charge in the open library space • Hire a meeting room (pre booking required) Local engagement in each community has commenced and will include an online and hard copy questionnaire outlining the proposed staffed hours for each site. Room hire customers and groups who meet in the library will be contacted separately to give them the opportunity to speak to local managers to discuss the proposed hours. A copy of the survey and for more information, including the proposed opening hours, please
visit www.leicestershire.gov.uk/ smart-libraries or visit the library. Grants available for school leavers I have reported in the past about grants that are available from Thomas Harley Charity which I sit on as a County Councillor. Grants are available towards books, accommodation etc. if your child is going on to University/ College or if they are doing an apprenticeship for equipment such as tools for hairdressing, car mechanics, building trade, catering etc., Income of the family must be below £36,000 pa. Applicants need a letter from a tutor confirming they support them going onto further education. Grants are looked at in March and September. You will need to contact the charities solicitors who are Mather Jamie on 01509 233433 and the solicitor is Mr. A. M. Ward. Overhanging Hedges I would like to give a gentle reminder that owner/occupiers have to keep footpaths and highways clear of overhanging branches and hedges. This also applies to hedges/branches in the countryside where there is a footpath. But you must remove the cuttings and not leave on the ground. I can assure resident where you have contacted me with problems I have contacted both County and Charnwood but it can take some weeks before the necessary works have been carried out. County will write asking for hedges/branches to your boundary be cut back if occupiers do not comply then they will charged if County have to undertake this work. Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such as overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or e mail christine_ radford@hotmail.com or christine. radford@leics.gov.uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road 10-11am.

The area of land would be more appropriate for informal amenity use with a focus on biodiversity enhancement. The Committee supported the application to delete Condition 23 and instead a contribution towards the provision of the Skate Bowl, on Oakley Road, by means of a further obligation under the Section 106 Agreement. Variation of condition 9 – junction of Hallamford/ Belton/Oakley/TickowLane An application has been submitted P/17/0807/2 to vary condition 9 of P/14/1604/2 which was to have 2 mini roundabouts at the above junction, the proposal is now to do a single mini roundabout with a slip road from Hallamford Road up to Oakley Road. This junction has always been an accident spot and it is hoped that these improvements will help. Land off Ashby Road West - request for screening P/18/1387/2 A request for screening opinion for a proposed residential development for up to 210 dwellings on land off Ashby Road West under P/18/1387/2 has been submitted to Charnwood. This is NOT a planning application but is a formal submission to Charnwood to establish whether a forthcoming planning application needs to be supported by an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The Council’s response will be that either the application should or should not be supported by an EIA. It will not be an assessment of the merits of the proposal. It should be noted that even if a formal EIA is not required many major applications
will still need to be supported by a wide range of technical reports to enable the effects of the proposal to be properly considered. These can include ecological reports, transport studies, landscape studies and flood risk, archaeological, noise and odour assessments. We will keep you informed should a planning application be submitted. 64 Brick Kiln Lane – Erection of 6m high CCTV mast An application P/18/1276/2 to erect a 6m high CCTV mast at 64 Brick Kiln Lane has been submitted to CBC. This is in the middle of the open countryside at the edge of the Town. The Edible Forest The Edible Forest Festival 2018 returns to the ancient woodlands of Charnwood Forest from 9th-16th September. There is a jam-packed programme such as The Secret Gourmet – Dine under the stars in one of their fantastic Edible Forest Pods – a truly unique experience, Tea in the Tower inside the iconic Old John Tower at Bradgate Park, Forest Funk, Safari Supper, Family Forest Food Adventure, Brewery Tour (this is a fascinating tour of the Trappist Brewery at the historic Mount Saint Bernard Abbey) and much more. To find out more visit www. edibleforest.co.uk. Council Bring Sites At the Full Council of Charnwood on 25th June the Labour Group asked for a Position Statement on the issue that the Borough is proposing to close all 70 of the Bring Sites. Cllr Radford and Cllr Tassell voted with the Labour Group, (and asked that their votes be recorded) in supporting that more information regarding how well these sites are used should be made available, before they are closed, it could result in more fly tipping and to remove the sites from the University was a retrograde step. We both felt that the saving of £20,000 pa did not merit the removal of the bring sites. The vote was lost. Therefore the Council will be making changes to bring sites (banks) across Charnwood to remove duplication of service and save taxpayers around £20,000 a year. The Council will make the savings on collecting the materials, some of which have no recyclable value and on cleaning the sites. The Council is removing 79 glass and aluminium recycling banks at
a number of locations that are no longer necessary as the materials can be recycled in the Council’s kerbside scheme. The sites can also attract fly-tipping and be used to dump items such as mattresses and white goods. The changes do not affect charity recycling banks which often collect clothing, shoes and books. The banks to be removed collected just over 200 tonnes of glass and aluminium last year, just over one per cent of the total amount of 16,500tonnes of recyclable material collected by the Borough Council. The Council stated that this would not present any capacity issues should the entire recycling find its way into the kerbside collections system. It is considered that 240 litre recycling bin will still be adequate for the vast majority of households; however, residents can request bags to put extra recycling in if necessary. To obtain bags for recycling contact CBC on 01509 634563 or email cleaner. greener@charnwood.gov.uk. The banks will be removed in August or September and the Council will be using the media, social media, its website and notices on the sites to inform residents about the changes. Those in Shepshed which will be removed are the ones in the car park at Armstrong Mill (Charterhouse), Glenmore Park, The Black Swan and at Junction 23 Lorry Park. Update On CCTV Cameras At the Full Council meeting of Shepshed Town Council (STC) at the beginning of July, Shepshed Town Councillors voted to accept new costings for the maintenance of CCTV in the centre of the town. The original costings which was agreed earlier this year was two years old and given to the Task and Finish Group of the Town Team by Charnwood Borough Council when CCTV was first looked at. Costs have risen slightly from just under £2,000 per year to £2,116 per year. This price is all inclusive of parts, labour and an annual service by ADT and the monitoring of the CCTV 24 hours 7 days a week by the Charnwood Borough Monitoring room. Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) is now at a stage with the paperwork to take it to a delegated panel. The only proviso CBC are making is that maintenance should be agreed by STC for future years. Without this agreement there could be no money and the offer of £20,000 to pay for five cameras and their installation could be withdrawn. The hold-up at the moment is that the Labour Councillors on STC are asking for a five year contract at the present price. ADT are happy to supply this but CBC cannot
undertake such a promise. CBC says the increases will rise only in line with CPI each year. The proposed cameras are of high quality so that the evidence on them is admissible in a Court of Law; they are installed by ADT and are of the same quality of those in Loughborough Town Centre. *on Wednesday 18th July at the meeting of the Shepshed Town Council the Council voted to accept the revised costings for the maintenance of the cameras and accept the 5 year contract that was offered by ADT. The Council also agreed to accept the quote from CBC for the 24/7 monitoring of the cameras. Forthcoming Events Loughborough by the sea from Sunday 12th August until Wednesday 15th August. Mela on Sunday 19th August in Loughborough On Bank Holiday Monday August 27th in Glenmore Park, Shepshed a fun day for all the family to enjoy. Voter Registration During August householders will be receiving forms to check that their details are up-to-date to enable you to vote. When the form arrives please make sure you respond to confirm that the details are still up to date or to let CBC know if any changes are needed. If you aren’t already registered at your current address (for example if you’ve recently moved ) the quickest and easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or by calling 01509 634546. Anyone who is 16 or 17 can also register and will then be able to vote as soon as they turn 18. On-Going Issues Planning and Anti-Social behaviour (majority of it confidential) is still taking up a large amount of our time. Do not hesitate to contact us should you have issues you wish to discuss with us. We shall continue to hold our regular monthly surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council offices, Charnwood Road, from 10-11am. No appointments are necessary. The good news is that as at the
end of July Charnwood Council now has a healthy 5.93 year
land supply for housing. This will
strengthen the hand of the council and local residents in ensuring that housing is built where the
local community impact can be
managed. This doesn’t mean that more housing isn’t needed but
it does mean that the legitimate objections voiced about the
impact on roads, traffic and local services will carry more weight.
I recently met Inspector Dwight
Barker from Leicestershire Police to discuss the concerns that
residents have put forward to me and others about crime levels and anti-social behaviour in
Shepshed. The most important message is that residents must
continue to report any incidents
they experience. Unless incidents
