Shepshed Walking For Health Our group has now completed a very successful first year. On the whole we have enjoyed reasonable weather with the odd wet and snowy day. We continue to walk every Monday morning except Bank Holidays. We have had an average of 40 walkers attending each session with over 120 now registered. We continue to have new members joining most weeks. Fred and Katrina have completed their Walk Leader training which increases our complement of leaders to 7. The enthusiasm of our Walk Leaders is endless and spurs us on to offer varied and enjoyable walks. We continue to explore all that Shepshed has to offer! The highlight of our year was being nominated for the Best Community Sport/Physical Activity Project Award at the Charnwood Sports Awards 2017. Much to our surprise and delight we won! We would like to thank all who attend our walks making them such a success which undoubtedly contributed to us winning. On the 18th December, our last walk for 2017 ended at Christchurch Methodist Church Hall with a Buffet Lunch which was enjoyed by all and highlighted the friendships and camaraderie that has developed. We resumed our walks on 8th January and hope, with your support, to share many more enjoyable times during 2018. Walks are one-hour long. Shorter walks are offered for those who wish to gain confidence and fitness, with the hope of progressing on to the full hour walk. Please do come and join us Monday mornings 10.30 am (except Bank Holidays) outside Shepshed Library (please come slightly earlier if it is your first walk to give you time to register). At the end of the walk there is the time for Coffee, Tea and a chat at one of the local coffee shops. Please do come and join us! If you would like to contact us Telephone: 07709892731 or email: wfhshepshed@gmail.com

Shepshed History Society Happy New Year! Despite the bitter cold night, on Jan 9th there was an excellent turnout of the Shepshed History Society who came to hear Mr Stephen Hartley speak on the subject of the 16th century Apothecary. Stephen a pharmacist himself and historian gave an in depth explanation of how medicine came to be mainly the domain of the chemist, even as far back as the Roman times. And so he gave the society a fascinating insight into the different drugs they prescribed as well as the quirky instruments used as the centuries progressed. Many slides were shown to illustrate the talk and everyone enjoyed the evening. Next month on February 13th the society will be able to enjoy a popular evenings entertainment when Mr Bob Neil will bring some of his antiquities he has collected over time and the aim of the quiz is for these to be identified as well as to explain how they were used. New members are always welcome.

Our charity has been operating since 1983. We operate two 70foot narrow boats on the canals and river system throughout Leicestershire. The Trust is completely manned by 45 volunteers. We were awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services in 2010. The mission of our trust is to enhance the wellbeing for people of all ages, especially those living with disabilities, mental illness or social exclusion or isolation. The boat trips provided by the Trust can provide learning and recreational opportunities to disadvantaged or isolated people and their carers which will allow them to maintain a healthy lifestyle or discover new experiences or gain skills. This in turn can improve the quality of their life opportunities. Our two narrow boats are very old. St. Clare was built in 1988 and Dandelion (we think) in 1980. During the last 6 months, mechanical failures have resulted in the cancellation of approximately 35-day trips booked by our service users. This equates to over 400 individuals who were not able to enjoy a day in the fresh air, on the water and accordingly, they would have remained in their care homes or normal accommodation. The condition of the boats will lead to more breakdowns and the replacement of one or more boats is the only option that we have. The age of the boats is now meaning that spare parts are not readily available thus increasing the amount of non-operational activity and expense as alternatives have to be sought. The beneficiaries of our work are varied but generally, they are all from within Leicestershire and Rutland or close by. We have served a variety of different organisations, mainly Care homes but also Autistic and Asperger’s organisation, “HITS” homeless teenagers, AGE UK, Women’s Institutes and a variety of centres for the physically and mentally disadvantaged including “Headway” and LCC Child Protection homes. By the end of October 2017, we will have expected to carry more than 1700 people from in and around Leicestershire and environs on 160 trips. We hope that you can see that we do “make a difference” to people’s lives. At least 70% of our groups contain one or more wheelchair users. Our volunteers are desperately trying to raise funds to place an order for a new boat. Our project is called “Put a foot in the water for the Baldwin Trust”. Even if we can raise the necessary funding in the next 3 months to place an order, we will not get our new boat until 2019. We have raised 50% of the required funds for the new boat and are applying for more grants and donations. We are also implementing a major refurbishment programme for the two existing boats because, if we fail to take action now, we believe that 2018 will see a continuing heavy drain on our valuable financial resources (due to repair costs), trying to keep our ageing boats operational thus, pushing the possibility of attaining our new boat further away from reality. Our vision is to operate 4 boats in all providing services to between 4,000-5,000 clients throughout Leicestershire and the surrounding counties. Age Concern UK (Leicester), states in their latest survey that there are over 1 million “lonely” people in the UK and that 3.7 million - people live alone! It is not hard to see that this problem will grow and our believe is that with early, low level interventions from active community projects, such as The Baldwin Trust, will lessen the impact on health and well-being of isolation and exclusion for many.

It would appear that the name of KINGSGATE for the Persimmon development, land off Hathern Road in Shepshed was chosen by their Sales Director after finding out that earliest form of the name Shepshed dates back to the Domesday book where it is referred to as Scepeshefde Regis meaning “Kings hill where sheep graze” they have tied it into “Gate” as the site is on the edge of Shepshed and that approaching from Hathern is the “Gate” to Shepshed…hence the name.

Letter From Local Resident Shepshed at Christmas was great - especially along Hathern Road. It didn't have any traffic lights and the road wasn't like a farm track. That quickly changed once Kings Gate was back at work! The road in both directions is a disgrace and I see that the lights have returned and will be with us for a month! I knew that there would be disruption, but what happened to the hedge that was grubbed out? That wasn't in the plan? What happened to the wheel wash? That was in the plan! Can you imagine the same levels of care being dished out when they start to build on Garendon next year? How about that development that is going on the Oakley Road fields? What will the planning people do about the queues of traffic along Ashby Road at Peak times? The future is pretty bleak I am afraid...

Shepshed Labour Councillor Surgeries Are held on the second Saturday of each month at Shepshed Town Council offices in Charnwood Road from 11am until 12 noon. Labour Councillors would love to meet you and help you deal with any issues that you may have. All Shepshed residents are welcome.

The Probus Club Of Shepshed The President welcomed members to the January meeting of The Probus Club of Shepshed. The Secretary dealt with the notices for the month, apologies for absence, the agm in March and any nominations for office. After lunch and the raffle draw our member Fred Ing gave a talk on the Union Castle shipping line on which he served as a young man. As well as relating personal experiences of life on these merchant ships a history of the company was given from its creation in 1863 as a coal carrier from South Wales to Southampton through to the heyday of becoming a record breaking mailboat service sailing every week to South Africa. The amalgamated Union Line and the Castle Line continued until 1977 when due mainly to containerization and air travel it came to an end. During its service the shipping line was also used as a troop carrier and armed escort to aircraft carriers in wartime. Fred was thanked for the talk which generated a lot of interest from members. Our next meeting is on Monday 5th February. New members are welcome, contact the Secretary on 01509 769802 for details.

Messy Church January saw the start of a new outreach program to the families of Shepshed. Messy Church is a way of being church for families involving fun. Messy Church is a church, not a craft club, that helps people encounter Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Messy Church is found across the world. Messy Church values are about being Christ-centred, for all ages, based on creativity, hospitality and celebration. Messy Church is part of The Bible Reading Fellowship which believes, with the historic churches, in one God, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Messy Church is for everyone – not just children. It would be great to see not just our families, but the wider church community involved in this fantastic outreach opportunity. Our next Messy Church will be on Sunday 25th February from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. Come and share in the fun – everyone welcome. Latest News From... Exotic Animals As Pets The RSPCA has reported that exotic animals are increasingly popular as pets in the UK. Although there are variations on the definition of an ‘exotic’ pet the RSPCA defines it as ‘any species that is not normally domesticated in the UK’. As these animals have not undergone the long process of domestication of our more traditional pets such as cats and dogs, meeting their needs can be very challenging. Sadly many of them are kept in inadequate conditions. All pets should be kept in suitable conditions to fulfil their behavioural needs, but many exotic pets need specialised, often very large enclosures. They may require a controlled environment including specific levels of heat, light and UV to maintain optimum health. The 2006 Animal Welfare act also says that pets should be given an appropriate diet and be able to exhibit their natural behaviour. Some animals need to live in groups while others are solitary. The availability of a vet is essential and this may be a problem with some species of exotic pets. Reptiles in particular are popular pets and the number of people owning pet snakes, lizards, turtles and tortoises increased from an estimated 400,000 in 2008 to more than a million in 2014. More than a hundred councils have issued licences to keep deadly predators and in 2016 a report said that lions, tigers, poisonous snakes and crocodiles are being kept as pets in the UK. A Freedom of Information request by the BBC revealed that licences for pumas, lynxes, ocelots, lemurs, vipers and ostriches and an assortment of wild cats have been issued in Cornwall. Cannock Chase has issued licences for three tigers and two lions. Fifteen wolves are registered at UK addresses while hundreds of bison and wild boar live in private fields as well as twenty zebras. Licences have also been issued for eight leopards and seven cheetahs. The number of wild animals kept as pets could be much greater as it is thought that many may be kept without proper authorisation. Many of these animals are bought with insufficient knowledge of their needs and the necessary commitment to care for them. Many are neglected or abandoned.

Primates with their cute and human-like features are popular pets. However the RSPCA is campaigning against this. Their needs can’t be met in a normal home environment. They are highly intelligent and should live in social groups. Some can grow very large and have great strength; they can be aggressive and have a long life-span. The RSPCA has often found them kept in bird cages. When rescued they frequently have conditions such as bone disease and diabetes, and psychological problems such as hair plucking, self-mutilation and depression. A sad case was that of a capuchin monkey taken from the wild at only three months old. The animal was traded and eventually kept in a wardrobe-sized cage in a London home for nine years before being rescued. Having had no exercise, insufficient sunlight, inappropriate food and no enrichment to relieve boredom the animal was suffering physically and psychologically. Its condition led to many irreversible disabilities. The exotic pet trade is very lucrative especially with the popularity of on-line selling. It is reported that illegal animal trafficking is financially on a par with illegal drugs and arms trafficking. It is estimated that between 3% and 20% of exotic animals are captured from the wild. As well as being cruel this causes considerable stress, especially when infants are snatched from their mothers. Such actions also undermine conservation efforts and the protection of endangered species. Captured animals are transported for long distances in dreadful conditions and many die before they are sold. Captive-bred animals don’t fare much better. Illegally imported animals that haven’t had veterinary checks or been in quarantine can carry diseases. (75% of all new infectious diseases originate from nonhuman animals).Owners who tire of their exotic pets often let them loose in the wild where they may wreak havoc to the ecosystem or fall victim to the elements or predators. In the US exotic animals are often left at zoo gates. Some animals should never be kept as pets but people intent on having a particular species should put the animal’s welfare and needs before their own desire. It is necessary to be fully committed to all aspects of the long term care of an animal whether it is traditional or exotic. However, for most wild species true affection is best demonstrated by leaving it in the wild. Elizabeth Allison, Woodside Vice-President

Topiary For The Garden It’s a cold day outside so I’m wrapped up warm inside thinking ahead to the coming seasons and what I’ll be using in my clients gardens and my own to give structure to beds, borders, pots and front gardens this year.

Beech Balls

Topiary is a simple & elegant option to add some formality and interest without a huge about of ongoing maintenance. It can be used for a classic ‘parterre’ look, add simple clean style to front garden, combined in a mixed border or give a focal point and permanent height in a kitchen garden. Topiary Plants Box - The best known plant to use for topiary is Common Box (Buxus sempervirens) which has small evergreen leaves on tight and compact plants which tolerate regular trimming to keep them to the required shape.

Box Balls

There is now a problem with an infection – Box Blight, which can cause issues with existing and new Box. Affected plants dieback and lose their foliage. It can be very difficult to tackle, having said that, It is still worth considering box, just take into account that if disease free plants are fed and watered well to keep them vigorous then they are less likely to succumb to the infection. Yew - A traditional topiary plant, Yew (Taxus baccata) has small dark green evergreen leaves and stems which re-grow well when trimmed lightly or pruned back yard. The foliage is much darker than Box

Pleached Tree

Bel Grierson

and new foliage is a fresh limeygreen, darkening as it ages. Yew doesn’t like wet or poorly draining soil so avoid planting in these conditions. Scale insect can be a problem which can be treated with an insecticide or by manually wiping the stems clean. Otherwise Yew is very hardy and easy to maintain. Ilex Crenata – The new evergreen kid on the block, Ilex crenata – sometimes labelled simply as Ilex, Ilexit or Dark Green, this plant looks very similar to Box but is not susceptible to Box Blight. It can be grown in the same shapes as box and has a similar slow growing habit. The new growth can be a bit more upright and twiggy but given a regular trim the shape can be maintained easily. Other than that the plants are generally not prone to pests or diseases. Other deciduous alternatives include Beech (Fagus) which I love as cubes, columns or balls. Hornbeam which is similar to beech and lends itself to pleached forms – see below. Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea can be clipped to make attractive purple balls/spheres in a shrub border. Topiary Shapes Traditional Balls - Look great in containers, modern borders or either side of a pathway to give formal structure. Various sizes are available and Box is the easiest to find. belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk

Pleached– These plants are trained on to frames in a similar way to espalier fruit trees. They are often grown on a leg to give height useful for screening above fence panels. Caring For Topiary Bear in mind that Box, Ilex, Yew are hungry plants which can turn an orange-brown if starved of nutrients and or too dry (or sometimes too cold), so make sure plants in pots are well fed and watered. Trim regularly to keep the shape as you’d like. Ensure that shears are sharp and clean. Disease can be spread by dirty tools. I few topiary specimens can certainly add some much needed interest at this time of year. Next month as we take a step closer towards Spring I’ll be looking at choosing Herbs in all of their various forms.

Columns – I new favourite of mine, these can be grown as rectangular or cylindrical columns to add grand height to large areas or to frame a pathway or entrance. They work particularly well with the deciduous Beech or Hornbeam which keep their coppery leaves through the autumn & winter.

Exhibition At Shepshed Library - Scheme Of Public Art Kings Gate Hathern Road There is an exhibition at Shepshed Library from Tuesday 6th February until Thursday 15th February 2018. There will be an opportunity for the public to submit their preferred concept using the comment slips. Below the photo’s and information show a proposed concept of the public art scheme.

Sculpture Proposal By Graeme Mitcheson M.R.B.S

Sculpture Proposal By Bews Gorvin

Shepshed has a long association with the wool trade, this sculpture takes its inspiration form the town’s own name, Shepshed which is referred to in the Doomsday Book as “Scepeshefde”, meaning “ hill where sheep graze”. It is also partly inspired by the rural and rugged landscapes that surround the town.

Our proposal for the King’s Gate, commission is to create an artwork that; Celebrates the local wool industry, shows the changing name of Shepshed, Acknowledges the year of the 100th anniversary of women gaining the vote. Provides a seating/meeting place where local residents can sit and yarn.

Historically, as the name suggests, Shepshed would have been the location for large-scale sheep farming. In early medieval times, fleece was collected and later it was sent for use all over the UK and even abroad in Flanders. Pastoral farming would have been a great source of employment for many people and played a huge part in the evolution of the town. Later, in the 17th century, framework knitting would continue the town’s association with the wool trade with most of the local working population involved in the manufacture of hosiery or woollen goods. The sculpture takes us back to the beginning of the Shepshed story but at the same time, reminds us of those windy and blustery walks on exposed hills that we have all taken around the town and nearby Charnwood . A solitary shepherd battles the wind as she guides her flock over a hill. It is a sculpture that transports us back to a more primitive time, but one that sows the seeds for Shepshed’s long standing relationship with the wool trade. The life-sized sculpture will be elevated on a purpose built grass mound. The figure and 3 sheep bridge the mound to create a definitive and memorable linear silhouette. The sheep will contain intricately carved fleece, the precious commodity that Shepshed has nurtured for centuries. The sculptures will be handcarved in Woodkirk stone, a hardwearing Yorkshire sandstone. The sheep carvings will be sufficiently robust that they can be climbed and played on and also used as seating. The sculpture will be very photogenic and will provide a stunning and memorable entrance feature to the new development.

Profile

Graeme Mitcheson is a sculptor based locally in Coleorton. Since graduating from Loughborough College of Art in 1995 he has created large-scale public art projects all over the UK. These have included a 3m tall mussel sculpture in Conwy, North Wales, a sculptural memorial of former England Football manager Sir Bobby Robson in Newcastle and a number of works sited at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire including the Naval Service Memorial which was shortlisted for a major public art award in 2016. You may have seen some of Graeme’s work locally. In 2008, Graeme created the sculptural mooring posts at the Canal Basin in Loughborough while last year he recently completed “29 Flowers”, a 3m tall sculpture at the entrance to the Daisy Bank development in Hathern.

The sculpture will comprise three granite elements, two providing seating and the third an obelisk, plus two associated bronze sculptures. The curved seating and obelisk are grouped into a semi circle. A large bronze seated sheep, patinated black and white and wearing a crown, (a hint at Shepshed’s name as denoted in the Domesday Book - Scepeshefde Regis). The Sheep leans against the first granite bench, the seating and obelisk will be cut at a slant on the vertical end faces, to suggest movement, as if the sheep has pushed the stones. The 2m high obelisk supports a small bronze figure 31cm high, working woman holding her knitting. The yarn drops down to the ball of wool at her feet. The front face of the obelisk will have two previous versions of Shepshed plus its current name and yarn cut into it by an experienced letter cutter in granite.

Profile

Philip Bews and Diane Gorvin have collaborated on making sculpture for the public realm since 1986, working throughout the UK and internationally, using a wide range of quality materials: wood; stone; cast glass; bronze; stainless steel. Each of over a hundred, site-specific, projects were designed in response to the context of the site. Phil trained and qualified as a landscape architect, practicing for 8 years before retraining and gaining a first class BA hons for Sculpture. Diane has a sculpture diploma in Environmental Design and was Town Artist for Runcorn and Warrington Development Corporation for five years. Clients have included: London Docklands Development Corporation, Ordos and Urumqi - China, City of Kelowna - Canada, Shire of Mundaring – Australia, Watford, Manchester, Dudley, Maidenhead, Warrington and Runcorn Development Corporation, British Railways - Liverpool, HM Customs and Excise, ICI, Belfast Health Care Trust, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Wimpeys – Cardiff, Keepmoat Homes, Persimmon Homes, and Bristol Zoo.

Shepshed Lions Club

Well Christmas is over and we enter into a New Year and we move into it with hope and optimism.

Santa Sleigh

For the first time since we started the Santa Sleigh, Shepshed Lions Club had to cancel some of the Santa Sleigh due to the weather. The first night was impossible to even consider starting due to heavy snow and ice. It was far too dangerous. The second night was also difficult due to icy conditions but we made a start but one of our intrepid collectors fell on the ice and was taken home. Thankfully he was not seriously hurt but was very badly shaken by his experience. We continued for a short while but the conditions were getting worse so we had to abandon the route only half completed. The rest of the routes were pretty much completed. We do try our best to visit as many streets as possible but it is not always possible. We are truly sorry if we did not visit your street and hope that you were not too disappointed. Lion President Bob Lilley said, “We are very grateful to the public of Shepshed who generously donated to this years collection. We have made a substantial amount of money that will be used to support our local community in Shepshed. We have received some fantastic feedback on Social Media, and face to face with members of our community, on what the Santa Sleigh means to them. We appreciate these comments. Many people said, “We can start Christmas now Santa has been”. Santa said,” I can start my Christmas now I have seen the smiling faces on the excited children”. It is obviously a two-way thing!”

Shepshed Lions Club 3rd Annual Christmas Market

On Sunday 17th December 2017, Shepshed Lions Club held its third Annual Christmas Market in The Hallcroft, Shepshed. This event was well supported by the fantastic people of Shepshed, despite the wet weather. The public was entertained by Choirs from St Winefrides Catholic Academy, Newcroft School, St Botolphs School and their lovely bell ringers. Hathern Band played some beautiful festive Carols, and we also had a street entertainer called Mad Dominic who amused children of all ages. There was a wide range of festive stalls for people to find that last minute present. The guys at Meet n’Eat provided tea and coffee at discount prices together with their usual array of good food. Livio from Livio’s Restaurant sold hot mulled wine with all the profits going to the Lions. Santa visited the market and had a Grotto that was a great success with the children.

Lion President Bob Lilley said, “With the generous support of Mick Sloan we were able to supply the Food Bank with a large amount of food to bring a little bit of Christmas cheer to those less fortunate in our community. It is also good to support Glenis and her team of helpers who work hard to support their clients.”

Shepshed Lions Support The Glenmore Centre Christmas Lunch

Each year the Glenmore Centre in Shepshed prepares and serves a Christmas Lunch for those who are on their own at Christmas. Shepshed Lions Club members were happy to make a donation in support of this project to spread a bit of Christmas cheer.

Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders Receive A Boost

Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders have received a cash boost of £270 from Mr. Terry Sullivan of Shepshed towards their project to raise £10,000 to purchase and install a number of Community Public Access Defibrillators across the borough of Charnwood. Terry raised the money by holding a Pinball event at his home and the profits from the event were donated to the project. Terry said, “This donation is not just from me. I organise the event and the donation comes from the Pinball Community”. Terry sadly lost his wife after a long illness, and this is the third donation he has made to our scheme. It has been agreed that when we site one of the defibrillators in Shepshed it will be dedicated to his late wife. Coordinator of the First Responders, Lion President Bob Lilley said, “ Terry and his friends are very generous people and has supported us with three generous donations. I knew his late wife and given his generosity and support it is appropriate to put a defibrillator in our community dedicated to her memory.”

Lion Susan Lilley, who organized the event said, “The weather is something that we cannot control but there was a great Christmas Atmosphere nonetheless. We appreciate the support we had from stallholders, the schools, Hathern Band and everyone else involved in the event. All the profits will be used to support local good causes.”

Santa’s Grotto At The Crown Hotel

Santa held a Grotto at The Crown Hotel, Market Street, Shepshed by kind permission of Lynda and John Savage. Many children came to give their Santa lists to the man himself. All proceeds from the Grotto will go to local good causes.

Shepshed Lions Club Supports The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal

Shepshed Lions Club has made a donation to The Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal to help the homeless at Christmas. On The 20th November 2017 Lions President Bob Lilley and Lion Tony Irish, who suggested the donation to this worthy cause, presented a cheque to Marta Ager of the Salvation Army. Lion President Bob Lilley said, “There are many people who are alone and homeless at Christmas in our area. This donation is made to help those who have nothing at Christmas and the fantastic work of the Salvation Army gives these people access to health care, dentist’s, social care and a large dose of respite from their difficult lives at the festive season.”

Shepshed Lions Club & Mick Sloan Of Primo IT Support Shepshed Food Bank

As in previous year’s, Shepshed Lions Club and Mick Sloan of Primo IT joined forces to support the Shepshed Food Bank just before Christmas. Each year Glenis Wilcox asks her clients what they would wish for to make Christmas special for them and their families. Glenis prepares the list of food they would like and passes it to Shepshed Lions Club. The food list is then examined and where possible purchased. Together with Mick Sloan £1000 word of food was delivered to Glenis at the Food Bank for distribution to those who need support.

PHOTO: Bella Oakley and her parents Alan and Jo are presented with a cheque for £500 by Lions Tony Hannel and Bill Holland before the quiz at Belton Village Hall on 11th December 2017.

Shepshed Lions Give £500 To Help Local 5 Year Old At School

Bella Oakley is a 5 year old girl from Shepshed with hearing difficulties, and her parents, Alan and Jo, have been raising money to pay for a radio aid that she will be able to use in school. As Jo explained, “With all the background noise in a classroom full of five year olds, it is hard for Bella to hear always what the teacher is saying. The radio aid comes in two parts, a microphone that the teacher wears, and a receiver that Bella will have. We know from the experience of other children how much benefit this will bring, and we have been raising money on-line, with a quiz, and using our own savings to try and get enough to buy this equipment for Bella. The cheque for £500 from Shepshed Lions is a big boost to the fund, and we really appreciate it.” Lion Bill Holland said, “Most of the money raised by Shepshed Lions goes back into the local community, and we are pleased to help Bella in this way. I’m sure the hearing equipment will help her enormously at school, and we wish her all the very best for the future.”

Tickow Lane will be closed on 5th February for up to 6 weeks. The road will be closed from the junction of the A512 Ashby Road West to the junction of Anson Road. The proposed alternative diversion route will be via – A512 Ashby Road West, Charnwood Road, Anson Road and vice versa. The reason is to undertake Gas Main diversion works. Grit Bins May I remind residents that the grit in these bins is for use on the public highways and paths and not for use on private drives. They have been positioned at junctions and hills to enable drivers to proceed on their way. I am concerned that County might remove them in the future. Help For Heroes In October 2017, lveshead School Interact Club hosted a Charity Concert in aid of Help for Heroes. This involved great performances from lveshead School Students, a Bake Sale, and a Raffle on the night. Accompanied by a generous donation, we raised a total of £450 and last week we were visited by Dean Williams, a Representative from the Charity. He told us all about the amazing work that Help for Heroes does every day supporting those with injuries, both mental and physical, which was from their Service in The British Armed Forces. They work with and support many other Charities to provide help for the patients and their families, and mentioned about the ways in which our donation would be spent. Thank you to all who attended or were involved in the Concert and to Help for Heroes for all the work they do.

Member Of Parliament

Nicky Morgan

T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk February 6th 2018 is the 100th anniversary of the date the Representation of the People Act was passed which enabled some women and all men to vote in elections. 2018 was also the year the first female MP was elected. The ability to vote was further extended in 1928. I know a number of local events are already planned to mark these important milestones. If you’d like to organise an event, particularly if you work in a school or with groups of young people, then please do let me know as there are lots of resources available to help. More details on Parliament’s plans can be found at: www.parliament.uk/vote100 One Shepshed woman who was elected, as a Charnwood councillor and

Shepshed Town Councillor, was Liz Bebbington. I was very sorry to hear about Liz’s death and pleased to be able to join family and friends for her funeral at St Botolph’s in January. Liz had an infectious laugh and, as Christine Radford said, loved a a good party. She served on Shepshed Town Council for 13 years. She will be greatly missed. The fabulous National Forest sits just on the edge of Shepshed. Since its inception in 1995 8.5million trees have been planted in the forest and it has become a hub for tourism, leisure and educational activities. The Government has announced, as part of its 25 year Environment Plan, the creation of a Northern Forest. In Parliament I was recently able to ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to ensure that those involved in this new forest project use the expertise of everyone involved in the National Forest and he was very happy to agree. Congratulations to Shepshed Swimming Club who were winners in the 2018 Aviva Community Fund. They will be buying diving blocks for the swimming pool. The club say they are trying to recruit some new younger members. More details can be found at www.shepshedswimmingclub.com Thursday February 1st is Time to Talk Day. Regular Shepshed Eye readers will know that I’ve focused on issues around mental health as your MP. Too often, it’s left to people with mental health problems to talk about mental health. It’s treated as a taboo subject – something to only be spoken about in quiet corners. But mental health affects us all, and everyone should feel able to talk about it. On Time to Talk Day 2018, everyone is encouraged to spread the word that wherever we are, any place can be the right space to talk about mental health – queuing for the cinema, sitting on a bus, or even in a lift! Shepshed And District Camera Club After the completion of the competition league for 2017 the members of Shepshed and District Camera Club gathered at their annual Dinner and Award Presentation to hear the overall competition result for the year. It couldn’t have been any closer after Sue Hutton, LRPS won the Themed Subject class and Garry Rennocks won the Open Subject. When their points for both classes were added together they tied to win the overall club championship for the year, the first time this has happened for quite a long time. Behind them in second position was Chris Coxon with Paul Rennocks in third position. The members have also recently enjoyed two very interesting presentations. The first talk “Thoresby, The End of the Mine” was given by Chris Upton from Southwell. Chris showed images and gave details of his time photographing the working environment and the people of Thoresby colliery, the last working pit in Nottinghamshire, prior to its closure in 2015. Along with an excellent projected display complemented by excellent commentary, Chris also brought along a selection of superb black and white printed images. The second talk ‘“Photography and Art - Uneasy Bedfellows?” was by club member John Loan-Clarke. John gave a very interesting and well researched talk about the relationship between traditional art and the relatively new practice of photography. A well received talk that evoked a lot of response from club members. The club’s meetings are continuing throughout 2018 until the summer break starting in June. Details of the club and its meetings can be found at www.shepshedcameraclub.co.uk

Borough Councillor

Christine Radford

T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com We can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough Council. We deal with housing problems, (such as trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour, whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property. We also deal with planning issues.

Elizabeth Bebbington We wish to report the death of Liz Bebbington who represented the East of Shepshed from 2011-15. Liz was also a Town Councillor for a number of years. Liz’s funeral was held on Friday 26th January and was well attended.

Armed Forces Survey Charnwood are conducting a survey to help them to understand the needs of our local Armed Forces Community. The survey can be found on www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/AFCC_Survey. If you would prefer a hard copy then please contact Victoria Coomber on 01509 634931 or email Victoria.Coomber@charnwood.gov.uk

Planning – Land To The Rear Of 62 Iveshead Road There’s an old joke which goes “If you understand what’s going on, you haven’t got all the information”. Since the developer put in yet another appeal (this time on the detail and to be heard on the 13th March 2018), the Borough Council has continued to receive revisions to the proposed design of the estate. The latest (only received on Friday 19th Jan) has changed the number of houses yet again, there are now 78, as well as other changes. The Planning Department is already under considerable pressure due to the considerable amount of development across the whole Borough. On this project not only have they to put together the response to the appeal, but also have to consider the later revisions.

Helping To Fight Cancer Cancer is happening right now and that is why President Alan Darby of Shepshed Charnwood Rotary Club was pleased, on behalf of the members, to present a cheque to Claire Coles Community Legacy Manager of Cancer Research UK. Alan said that, as in all walks of life, the Club has had its "close encounters" with cancer, so it is comforting to hear that the work of Cancer Research UK is contributing to better understanding and treatment of the disease, leading to improved quality of life as well as prolonging life expectancy. Claire said, "We are very grateful to the club for this donation as it will help Cancer Research UK’s ground-breaking work in finding new treatments and cures”. If you would like to donate then please contact Claire Coles Cancer Research UK Tel: 01780 765176 | Mobile: 07767 675020

Since the design has changed several times, it makes the officers jobs very difficult and time consuming as they have to try and monitor all the changes over the different revisions and decide whether those changes are beneficial and/or answer the previous concerns raised by the ward councillors and residents. All while constructing the defence to an appeal that is based on a particular design that is now several revisions ago. If you are sending comments in about the development to the Plans Department at Charnwood, please try and help the officers by stating clearly which drawings/revision you are commenting on as well as the reference number shown above and copy your Councillors in. Planning – 64 Brick Kiln Lane Your ward Councillors Radford and Tassell are supporting residents with their concerns regarding two applications to build up to 7 houses or 3 bungalows on land next to 64 Brick Kiln Lane. Mainly for the reasons that this site is within the National Forest, Charnwood Forest and more importantly within Zone 12 of the ‘Borough of Charnwood Landscape Character Assessment’. A previous application on the site was refused by Charnwood and subsequently refused at appeal. Appeal Ref. AAP/X2410/W/15/3130066.

On Going Issues Planning and Anti-Social behaviour (majority of it confidential) is still taking up a large amount of our time. Do not hesitate to contact us should you have issues you wish to discuss with us. We shall continue to hold our regular monthly surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council offices, Charnwood Road, from 10-11am. No appointments are necessary. New Year Prize Boost For Young Trio Following Festive Fun Three creative local children scooped goodie bag prizes after producing colourful bauble designs that adorned a building society branch in Shepshed over the Christmas period. Phoebe-Rose Coxon (3) from St Winefrides playgroup and eight-year-old Chloe Summers and Jessica Tolley (5), who both attend Newcroft Primary School, joined over 60 other youngsters from across the Leicestershire town who painted, coloured and decorated cardboard baubles delivered to schools by staff from The Nottingham. Theirs were the entries that staff deemed to be the winning entries and the trio visited the branch this week to pick up their prizes. Branch customer services consultant Jade Hardy said: “We had a fantastic response to the competition and many of our customers commented on how fabulous the baubles looked displayed in-branch over the festive period. A big thank-you to all the local schools and playgroups who took part and congratulations to our three deserving winners.”
