New Mobile App Set To Revolutionise ‘Searches’ For Local Businesses Rebecca Rhodes

Since launching in December, the Spotted:App looks on-course to revolutionise the way that people search for business services in the future. The app, which has already seen over a thousand users in its first month, has been designed to make the process of finding a reliable and trusted service so much simpler. Spotted:App was the brainchild of Leicestershire businessman, John Whitbread, who is so passionate about helping businesses he has risked it all, even selling his house, and put everything on the line to make it work. John created the simple-to-use app to connect the buyer (the customer) with the seller (the service provider), whether they need help or recommendations with odd-jobs, or services such as dog walkers, solicitors or personal trainers. Spotted:App has been created so it’s freely accessible to all. It’s the simplicity of its use that I’ve been mindful of since day one. I realised that algorithms on certain websites and apps are making decisions on behalf of the customer, showing them what it thinks they want to see, rather than showing all options available, meaning they are less likely to make a well-informed decision”, offers John. “The Spotted:App provides all options available to a customer without any algorithms, or adverts being biased to the top, giving them the ability to find the right business for their job”. He continues: “It’s only through having all the options available that we can really make educated decisions, so I wanted to create that very thing: I wanted to link businesses and customers with technology aiding the process, rather than hindering it”. After a year in development and selling his house to fund the project, it’s safe to say that John is both excited and passionate about sending the Spotted:App out into the world, and his dedication and hard work is already starting to pay off, as the initial user figures testify. He says: “It has been an interesting 12 months, as well as a steep learning curve, but I’m really proud of what I’ve created. We have already had over 1,000 people downloading and using the app in the first month of launch alone, and this is just the beginning!” Anyone can download and use the app for free via the Google Play and App Store or visit www. spottedapp.com for more information.

Advice Not To Be Sneezed At Article by Gary Trickett

The common cold is quite possibly the UK’s most common illness; statistics show that most adults experience on average two to four colds a year, and children up to nine. Symptoms can include blocked sinuses, a runny nose, sore throat, coughing and sneezing as well as a general feeling of being unwell. Fortunately, there are several remedies that can help to keep colds and flu firmly at bay. Perhaps one of the most effective and well-researched is Echinacea. A powerful immunebalancing herb, it works by improving the way the immune system responds to bugs, especially the common cold. In one report researchers found that Echinacea purpurea can more than halve the risk of catching a cold and if you’ve already caught a cold, reduce its duration by a day and a half. For nasal congestion and catarrh, you could try Po-Ho Oil. A combination of natural essential oils, including Po-Ho (Mandarin for Peppermint) Eucalyptus, Juniper, Caraway and Fennel, Po-Ho Oil can be inhaled as a vapour when diluted in a bowl of hot water. Use very sparingly, one drop is plenty, or put one or two drops onto a hankie and place under your pillow at night. Wash hands thoroughly after use. A handy inhaler is also available. Specific vitamins and minerals can also lend support. Vitamin C is of course widely documented for its immune system potential; viruses find it hard to survive in a vitamin C-rich environment. Food sources include peppers, watercress, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, strawberries, lemons, kiwi fruit, melon and tomatoes. Vitamin C supplements can also be effective, although the body cannot actually absorb much more than around 60mg at one time so lower doses several times a day are often more effective. For further advice, visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.

Cheque Presentation To Teenage Cancer Trust Charity's Iveshead School Interact Club presented a cheque to the Charity, Teenage Cancer Trust. A Representative from Teenage Cancer Trust gave a talk and explained their work. The Trust helps young people aged between the age of 13 and 24 years. They provide Specialist Units in Hospitals where these patients will be treated by specially trained medical staff. These Units are decorated and equipped to suit young people of that age group. At the present time there are 28 Units throughout the country with outreach services, which have specially trained co-ordinators. The sum presented was £158 and this was raised by a raffle and selling tickets for the School Concert, and was also supported by three Parachutists who took part in a Sponsored Parachute Challenge. Not in photo, Parachutist Emily.

Vandalism being carried out in Shepshed over the recent few months, obviously repairs will have to be paid for and will. Unfortunately, be at the expense of the Council tax payers of Shepshed. The Town Council has made a decision not to replace any further panels in the existing bus shelter, therefore, care currently considering an alternative design. Apologies to the residents who are currently having to use the bus shelter in the present condition, however, be assured that a replacement will be arranged in due course. The bus shelter is in the Bull Ring and the safety surfacing is underneath the swings on Blacksmith Avenue play area.

Shepshed History Society Article by Marjorie Schulz

Stephen Taylor the renowned television personalty was invited on January 14th by the Shepshed History Society to give an in depth talk on what actually occurred on the Garendon estate during the second world war. It would appear that the government chose this particular area in order to stock pile 30,000 tons of English and American ammunition. So the Royal Army Ordnance Corp was moved in to set it up,- the 32, Ammo Sub Depot to be more exact. The grand house much to its detriment was used to house military personnel who organised vast areas of the estate along with miles of Leics. country lanes to store this lethal ammo. Heaps of ammunition would be stocked piled on the sides of these lanes which reached as far as Melton Mowbray, health and safety obviously not an issue in those days Over time Stephen has dug up numerous artefacts on the estate including, a variety of bullets, ordnance shells, fuses, cap badges, buckles and bits of anti tank mines. After the war, orders were given to blow up the stock piles remaining and situated by the Needle Obelisk was sited a very big crater where the army blew up unwanted ammo and this crater remained for a great many years before it was filled in and returned to farm land. The army finally left the estate in 1951, but the estate has never recovered from this troublesome onslaught and this awesome era has now sunk into the annuls of modern history, a sad testimony to the folly of man and the world at large. Stephen brought countless items he had dug up and showed many interesting slides, so it was a very interesting and thought provoking evening all round. The February meeting on Feb 11th will be given by Mr Robert Mee, his subject to be Village Lockups. New comers are always welcome

The Probus Club Article by Ian Smith

The club held its opening meeting for 2020 at our venue, Longcliffe Golf Club, where we enjoyed a superb four course lunch. By coincidence the date was exactly our 23rd anniversary of using Longcliffe as our venue and we are currently looking forward to the next 23 years there. It is a really superb location with excellent food and all the normal facilities of a good golf club. One of our attending guests was Steph who was going to introduce our brand new website (that she has developed for us), www. charnwoodprobus.co.uk, to the members. Unfortunately the laptop provided by the club to drive the projector decided it wanted to be in “flight mode” and would not connect to the internet but most members managed to have a look at the site on their smart phones. Charnwood Probus Club is a most friendly place to meet up for a drink and lunch, with members from virtually every walk of life which makes the conversations between members most interesting. We do not, as yet, have any retired astronauts as members but we are most willing to hear from any who would like to join, and, indeed from any other retired or semi-retired gentlemen who may wish to come along and see what we are about. Simply go onto our website and sent a Contact Form and I can assure you of a swift response to answer any queries you may have. There is lots of information on the web site but if you do wish to come along we must be aware that you are coming in order that a lunch can be ordered for you.

New Member Joins Shepshed Lions Article Ann Bodycote PHOTO: Left to right, Lion Tony Irish receives his Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from Lion President Bill Holland.

Honour For Shepshed Lion Article Ann Bodycote

Tony Irish, a long standing member of Shepshed Lions Club, has been awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest award in Lions. In presenting Tony with the award, Lion President Bill Holland said, “Melvin Jones founded Lions in Chicago in 1917 and we have now grown to become the biggest service organisation in the world. There are more than 1.4 million of us in 43,000 clubs in 182 countries. A Melvin Jones Fellowship marks someone out as having made an outstanding contribution to their community, and that is very true of Tony. Without his hard work and expert knowledge, it is hard to see how Shepshed Carnival could take place and Santa would have to walk around Shepshed in the run-up to Christmas without his sleigh. He chairs the Club Welfare Committee, which considers applications for help from the public, and he does so with great charity and warmth. He is already working on the arrangements for this year’s Carnival on 31st August, and to say he richly deserves this award is an understatement.” Tony said, “I feel really humbled. I’m not In Lions to get awards and things, none of us are, but I really appreciate this. Bring on Carnival!”

Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders Appeal Article by Bob Lilley

I am writing on behalf of the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders, who are a team of volunteers who give their time freely supporting our local communities in Shepshed, Loughborough and the surrounding villages, supporting East Midlands Ambulance Service. We provide emergency care to patients in our community who are suffering from serious medical emergencies. These include cardiac arrest, heart attack, stroke, asthma anaphylactic shock, diabetic emergencies, difficulty breathing and falls. Our team is now 18 strong working when they are available. To this end we have had use of a Skoda saloon that has been funded on lease hire by East Midlands Ambulance Service, for sole use by our group. However, as from April 2020, the funding of the lease of this valuable vehicle will cease and not be funded by them when the current lease expires, due to severe financial restrictions. However, East Midlands Ambulance Service is prepared to support our use of a vehicle by sponsoring the fuel, maintenance of the vehicle and Insurance for the vehicle. They are also able to supply us with an appropriate vehicle if we raise the funds to pay the 3 years lease hire on the new vehicle. This will cost £10,500 for the 3years lease, that our scheme will aim to raise before April this year. I am writing to ask you if you would be willing to support this fund raising appeal to enable our scheme to function at the best possible level. Any donations will be put into the purchase of the lease for this vehicle. Please make any cheques payable to Shepshed Community Responders. If you are able to assist with this project please do not hesitate to contact me on 07585 772902 or by e-mail at thelilleys15@gmail.com.

Jane Hunt MP Meets With Cancer Charity, Sarcoma UK, To Raise Awareness Of ‘The Loneliest Cancer’ Article by Simon Whelband

I was very pleased to see that William Davis have planted a lot of trees in Daisy bank down from the top of Doble Crescent towards the cemetery. I allowed for the Xmas and New Year periods before I decided to raise the issue again as I had not seen any further planting. They still have to plant shrubs throughout and trees in the cemetery area. Cara Wild, the borough officer, has agreed a plan with them and has got them to do what they have done so far. I have written to her asking when the rest of the work is going to be done. We have a bit longer this year because of the wet weather but all the plants should be in place by the end of February. I will work with Cara to ensure that WD don’t leave it too late this year as well. I have reported the gravel left on the A6 after the resurfacing to Betty Newton, your County Councillor, and she is looking into getting it cleared up. The idea for a wood next to Terracotta Gardens has moved forward a bit. I met Adam Goodall, the Open Spaces officer who came up with the idea, to discuss the plan with Roy Dann and Dave Neville. We then made a site visit. The Parish Council is very keen on the idea. Adam was then going to take the new Chief Executive of the borough council to see the site. We hope that he will give his approval. The scheme will involve planting 15,000 trees and contribute 15% of the target of 100,000 which the council has to plant as part of the carbon reduction programme. So Hathern will hopefully get a nice wood and will be a significant part of the fight against climate change. If you like the idea, please convey your support for it to the Chief Exec, Rob Mitchell. Hathern Community Library celebrated its 4th birthday on January 25th. Many people visited the library and enjoyed drinks and cakes. A raffle raised £100, the cakes £58 and a book sale £46. It was a very enjoyable event. A sad note was that David Wooliscroft passed away a few days before. He was a volunteer who did his own slot and many covers for colleagues and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with his wife Gail at this time. There is another chance to show your appreciation for the brilliant volunteers at the library in an event called Love Your Library on Friday 21st Feb, when the library will be open all day from 10-4. There will be many activities to celebrate still having a library thanks to those volunteers after cuts by the county council. After a bit of delay Hathern Youth Club finally got the application in for a member’s grant to buy a new pool table. It is now installed and Martin Clayton told me that it is a nice piece of kit. So, it is waiting for the youth of Hathern to enjoy. And more funds will soon be flowing to the Youth Club after Hathern’s Big Jumble Sale at the Hathern Club on Saturday Feb 8th from 3-5. A snip at 50p entrance, come along and grab a few bargains, including clothes, toys and bric-a-brac with the usual raffle and tombola. Any prizes would be gratefully received and you can take them to the Village Hall any Friday evening or contact hathernevents@ gmail.com. On Saturday 29th Feb (yes, it’s a leap year!) starting at 19.00 the parish church is hosting a film night with a Bring n’ Share supper. So, a feature film and drinks for free. British Science Week starts on March 6th and the Library is central to events as ever. Jon Smith Moorhouse and Rachel Bennett, Hathern’s scientific boffins, will be appearing at the library to do everyone’s head in by attempting to explain modern physics. If you don’t get it all, it’s not you. Richard Feynman once said that if you think you understand modern physics, you’re wrong. Nobody can, apparently. Go along to the library and Jon and Rachel will tell you why.

Jane Hunt, MP for Loughborough recently met with Sarcoma UK to discuss the work the charity is doing to support people affected by sarcoma cancer. One of the issues the charity is trying to address is about the general lack of awareness of the cancer. Initial diagnosis is often inaccurate and compared to other more common cancers, fewer treatment options are available. This means that currently only 55% of sarcoma patients live beyond five years. It is for this reason, the charity has called this ‘the loneliest cancer.’ Following the meeting, Jane said: “It was fascinating talking to the charity today. Only 25% of people know what sarcoma is, and I’m proud to work with sarcoma to help spread awareness of this terrible cancer. It’s also clear to see that more needs to be done to help understand sarcoma so that patients have access to the level of treatment and care they deserve. It’s great to see this charity raising public awareness about sarcoma and its symptoms, while funding vital research into better treatments and supporting patients and loved ones through their Support Line.” Sarcoma can affect any part of the body, inside or out, including the muscle, bone, tendons, blood vessels and fatty tissues. In the UK, 5,300 people are diagnosed every year, that’s 15 people every day. Sarcoma UK is a national charity that funds vital research, offers support for anyone affected by sarcoma cancer and campaigns for better treatments.

Jane Hunt MP Encourages Local Groups To Apply For Funding To Encourage Women And Girls To Get Active Article by Simon Whelband

Loughborough MP Jane Hunt has lent her support to Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign which is helping millions of women and girls get active. She is also calling for local community groups, charities and sports clubs in the Loughborough constituency to take advantage of the new funding Sport England is making available to help provide activities for women to get active, with the support of deodorant brand Sure Women. The This Girl Can Community Fund is open for applications until 25 February 2020 and will be awarding grants of between £300 and £10,000 to 50 community groups and projects across England who are creating opportunities for women to get active or play sport. Sport England first launched the National Lottery funded campaign in 2015 in response to fewer women than men being regularly active despite 75 per cent saying they would like to do more. It has received widespread praise for its realistic and empowering portrayal of women and girls, and to date has encouraged more than 2.9 million women to take up more sport or physical activity as a result. Commenting, Jane said: “With Loughborough’s sporting background, I’m proud to support Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign to get more women and girls active. However, there’s still more to do – with recent research undertaken by Sport England showing that that 63% of women say that the way exercise is often portrayed on social media has a negative impact on them. That is why I am encouraging constituents to apply for the funding that Sport England has made available. I’d urge local groups and organisations – not just sports clubs, but any community groups who work with women and want to arrange activities or classes to encourage women to get active to apply for funding from Sport England.” More details can be found on the This Girl Can website: www. thisgirlcan.co.uk/communityfund For more information about the This Girl Can campaign and to download free resources, please visit: www.thisgirlcan.co.uk

Cllr Christine Radford T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com

I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges onto the highways/footpaths, social services etc. Biffa, Newhurst Quarry, Ashby Road East, 2019/VOCEIA/0292/LCC An application has been lodged with County to accommodate proposed changes to the design of the plant including materials used in the construction and the external appearance of the plant; the removal of the IBA maturation area and relocation of the car park into the IBA area; rearrangement of external ancillary equipment and internal site roadways. For more information about this proposal or the likely timescale for its determination then please contact planningcontrol@leics.gov.uk or 0116 305 7045, the case officer is Steve Marriott. Community Safety Strategy At the Cabinet meeting held on 17th December (This was after the cut off date of 13th December for the January issue), a report was presented regarding Community Safety and this strategy will be submitted to the Full Council at County on 19th February for approval. The Strategy includes the following County-wide priorities – • Identify and protect the most vulnerable • Reduce crime and fear of crime • Reduce incidence and impact of Anti-social behaviour (ASB) • Reduce harm from alcohol and substance misuse • Reduce risk of harm to young people from cybercrime and bullying • Increase reporting of domestic abuse and protect and the most vulnerable • Increase confidence in reporting of hate incidents Consultation with stakeholders in relation to the draft Strategy took place over 8 weeks between 16th September and 11th November 2019. The consultation involved consideration of the Strategy by the Scrutiny Commission on 6th November, and via an online surgery which was forwarded to stakeholders; the CSPSs for the district areas, the Police, Combined Fire Authority, Fire and Rescue Service, Leicestershire CCGs, the Probation Services, Public Health, and Leicester City and Rutland Councils. Re-commissioning of substance misuse treatment and recovery services A report from the Director of Public Health mentioned the recommissioning of substance misuse treatment and recovery services was presented to the Cabinet on 17th December. The future delivery model for substance misuse treatment and recovery services was the subject of substantial research and engagement activity between July and September 2019. The current model for substance misuse treatment services comprises an integrated community substance misuse treatment service across Leicestershire and Leicester City commissioned jointly, an inpatient detoxification service commissioned jointly with Leicester City and substance misuse residential rehabilitation placements funded separately by each authority. The new model will streamline these separate services into a Fully Integrated Treatment Pathway comprising community treatment, in-patient detoxification and residential rehabilitation placements. In addition, a separate service will provide recovery community support. Services will continue to be commissioned jointly. The model is comprised of;

20 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

Lot 1 – Integrated Substance Misuse Treatment Service. This includes the community drug and alcohol service for adults and young people, a criminal justice/vulnerability service, the in-patient detoxification service and residential rehabilitation placements. Placements for in-patient detoxification and residential rehabilitation will be agreed and funded by the service provider. Lot 2 – Recovery Community Support Service. These are services to engage those unable to access structured treatment service and will enable people to start their recovery journey and provide the aftercare recovery support and integration into purposeful activity. This is independent of the treatment service. Charnwood Local Plan (2019-2036) County have commented on the above and the full report can be found on the link to the Cabinet papers 17th December and at Charnwood’s local plan link. As your County Councillor I have commented on these proposals. Budget Consultation The County Council are currently consulting on its latest budget proposals and you can find out more about the four-year plan at http:// www.leicestershire.gov.uk/budget A 20 per cent surge in demand for children’s social care and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), combined with inflation, is driving up County’s costs by £117m. The main components of the £117m risings are £59m of service pressure and £58m inflation costs, covering increases such as supplier charges and the National Living Wage. The latest four-year plan sets out the need for £80m of savings, but also £16m of investment in tackling climate change, an extra £34m to support vulnerable people and £7m next year to top up road maintenance budgets. The £80m breaks down as £24m of detailed savings and a plan to reduce SEND costs by £17m, leaving a £39m gap. The £24m detailed savings include: • Recruiting more in-house foster carers to reduce expensive placements • Reducing adult social care costs by simplifying processes and speeding up support • Bringing together early help and prevention services – and delivering some in-house • Reduce disposal costs by recycling and re-using more waste • Generating more income from property investment Adults and Communities Overview an Scrutiny Committee At the meeting of the above scrutiny committee held on 20th January the medium term financial strategy for 2020/21 was discussed. People aged over 65 accounts for the majority of the Department’s care expenditure. This financial growth is required to meet the increasing numbers of older people with substantial and critical needs as well as the increasing fragility of existing service users. Future changes in demand are initially estimated using historic trends to produce a baseline forecast of the likely number and average cost of service users. During 2019/20 there has been an increase in the average number of home care hours provided. It is anticipated that this trend will be set to continue. Other areas with growing costs will be Children with learning disabilities transferring to Adult services and adults with mental health issues. The total budget for this department is just over £143m. Advance Notice of Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) I shall carry on bringing to your attention any temporary road closures if I have them in time for the cut off date at the Eye. Sometimes the diversions proposed seem very long, but County has to take note of HGV’s who cannot use some minor roads and L drivers who cannot use the Motorway.

At Tickow Lane, there were 2 way lights at the end of January. From 20th of January for 4 weeks, Tickow Lane will be closed at its junction with Belton Street/Hallamford Road/Oakley Road. While Tickow Lane is closed 3 way lights will be utilised on Belton Street, Hallamford Road and Oakley Road. From 17th February. Oakley Road will be closed at is junction with Hallamford Road, Tickow Lane and Belton Street for 4 weeks. While Oakley Road is closed, 3 way lights will again be utilised on Tickow Lane, Hallamford Road and Belton Street. These works/road closures are to safely allow for the construction of a new roundabout at the junction of Hallamford Road, Belton Street, Oakley Road and Tickow Lane. These improvements at this junction have been needed for a number of years. There will be a further closure of the whole junction of Tickow Lane, Hallamford Road, Belton Street and Tickow Lane approximately 16th March for 1 week, these will be overnight closures to enable resurfacing works to be undertaken at the whole junction. The dates I have mentioned are dependent on the weather. A TTRO is to be made for the following location: A512 Ashby Road and Rempstone Road, Coleorton. The purpose of the TTRO is to allow LCC to safely facilitate carriageway patching. The duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of one overnight closure commencing the 13th March. Works are scheduled to take place between 20.00 and 06.00. These were originally planned for 29th November but had to be postponed. Imposition of 50 mph speed limit order The Leicestershire County Council (Ashby Road West, Shepshed in the Borough or Charnwood and Ashby Road, Belton in the district of North Wes Leicestershire). The order came into force on 22nd of January 2020. No person shall drive any motor vehicle at a speed exceeding 50 mph. Tickow Lane – speed cushions and raised table Leicestershire County Council are proposing to install Traffic Calming measures (speed cushions)and a Zebra Crossing on Tickow Lane Shepshed in front of the Jelson new housing development. The speed table ramps at the junction of Hallamford Road and Belton Street are also to be extended as part of the scheme. The traffic calming consists of six sets of speed cushions. Associated signing and lining are also to be part of the scheme. Works are anticipated to last 3-4 weeks and will be mostly carried out during weekdays. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the duration of the works. A copy of the proposals, together with a plan and an explanatory statement giving the Council’s reasons for proposing to make the changes may be inspected during normal office hours at Shepshed Town Council and at my monthly surgery on 1st February or it can be viewed online at www.leics.gov.uk/tro_consultations.htm. Following concerns raised by residents who live near to these proposals I have asked County to look at putting speed ramps rather than speed cushions. Flood Wardens Recent flooding has highlighted the need to recruit new Flood Wardens and conduct refresher training for existing wardens. The Resilience Partnership which provides emergency planning for all Local Authorities within Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland will be conducting training events across the county, the nearest location to Shepshed is 26th March in Coalville 18:00-20:00. The training will cover the role and responsibilities of a Flood Warden, there will also be additional training carried out for those wardens who wish to have the ability to assist the Highways Authority in closing roads due to flooding. These will assess on a case by case basis and should not be carried out unless the warden has attended the relevant training. Anyone who wishes to become a Flood Warden should email emergency. management@leics.gov.uk or call 0116 305 6101.

Your help and support Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such as overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess, inconsiderate parking (on pavements, yellow lines, outside of schools) etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. If for some reason you do not receive your copy of the Eye. I now have my information posted on my web page at County. This will also help you to keep track on road closures etc. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 01509 502974 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com or christine.radford@ leics.gov.uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road 1011am. Cllr Christine Radford T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com

We can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough Council. We deal with housing problems, (such as trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour, whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property. We also deal with planning and Environmental Health issues. Planning P/19/2533/2 – 28 Bridge Street – Proposed single storey extension to the rear and cladding to the front porch. P/19/2489/2 – 62 Iveshead Road – display of 3 flagpoles, 2 free standing signs, 1 hording sign and 1 illuminated totem sign (information only). P/19/2556/2 – Shepshed Word of Life Church, Kirkhill – erection of church building following demolition of existing. P/19/2461/2 – Arnold Smith House, Bridge Street – replacement of flat roof to building. (retrospective) Erection of up to 210 dwellings P/19/2436/2 – land off Ashby Road West – Erection of up to 210 dwellings with associated access, landscaping, open space and sustainable drainage. This area is at the junction of Ashby Road with Tickow Lane and is in outline only. The proposal is at the time of going to press for an access onto Ashby Road and 2 accesses on to Tickow Lane. It is also proposed for a pedestrian access on to Jubilee Walk. Shepshed Town Council have forwarded their concerns to this application following the estate meetings chaired by Cllr Radford. Cllrs Radford and Tassell as ward Cllrs for this area have jointly made their concerns known to Charnwood planning department. They have commented on the access arrangements, site, White Horse wood, flooding, jubilee walk and infrastructure. A full copy of their comments will be available on the planning portal. Planning approval – Hall Croft The Micro pub in Hall Croft has been approved. This is on the site of former bike shop at 20/22 Hall Croft, The proposal relates to the change of use of the two adjoining ground floor retail units to a micro-pub, intending to be a small free-house serving mainly cask ales, together with minor external alterations including the replacement of the existing shop fronts and the erection of a glazed canopy at the rear. It will sell locally produced real ales, gin and wines plus soft drinks. The upper floor will be retained as a residential flat for occupation by the manager of the micro-pub, while outbuildings at the rear of the premises will provide toilet facilities. Planning refusal P/19/2221/2 – 6 Glenmore Avenue (land adjacent to) erection of one dwelling house was refused. On going planning applications The planning application P/19/1562/2 for the installation of 14 floodlights to the building’s exterior and erection of a security camera tower in the front car park at Davey House (Megitt), Gelders Hall Road, has still not been decided by Charnwood. Cllrs have on a number of occasions contacted the planning department for an update. This application was due to be considered by the plans committee back in November, then postponed to December meeting but they still do not have a date, but will keep residents informed who live on Belvoir Way as this will impact on them the most. Planning application submitted for new cemetery in Loughborough A planning application to create a new cemetery in Loughborough has been submitted by Charnwood Borough Council. The Council says the new 14-hectare cemetery could provide burial space in the town for the next 300 years and it will replace the existing facility in Leicester Road. The proposed new site, which is located off Watermead Lane, to the rear

22 | www.openboxpromotions.co.uk/news

of Nanpantan Sports Ground, received the most support during a public consultation in 2018. We would encourage people to have a look at the plans. There will be opportunities to comment during the planning process. The Council plans to develop the cemetery in phases with the first phase including space for over 5,000 burials and parking for 40 vehicles. At just over 5 hectares, the first phase will last around 100 years. The Council is committed to being a carbon neutral organisation by 2030 and the application reflects this aim, The cemetery will be the first in the country where the road surfaces will be partly made from recycled plastic. Each tonne of the road materials will contain the equivalent of 80,000 plastic bottles. There will also be six electric car charging stations and it is also proposed for waste bins and outdoor furniture to be made from recycled plastic. Vehicles will be able to access the proposed site via Nanpantan Road. The access road to the sports facility will be extended towards the proposed site. The initial cost of getting the cemetery up and running with onehectare of burial space is around £610,000. If the application is granted, work will start in 2020 with the aim of the site being ready for burials by 2021-2022. The application can be viewed on http://bit.ly/2qUsxhV . The current cemetery in Leicester Road is due to run out of space in 2022. Armed forces project reaches national award finals A project which supports the armed forces community in Charnwood/ Rushcliffe/Melton has been selected as a finalist in the national Soldiering on Awards. This partnership between Councils encourages understanding and awareness of the issues affecting veterans and their families within the local community. The project has been selected as a finalist in the Working Together category of this year’s The Soldiering on Awards which celebrate the achievements of the military community, by honouring individuals, Veterans, their families and organisations that support the armed forces community. Rushcliffe and Charnwood also recently received a gold award from The Armed Forces Covenant Employer Scheme (ERS). The Gold Award is the highest badge of honour for organisations which have signed the Armed Forces Covenant and demonstrated outstanding support for those who serve and have served. Carillon tower museum to reopen while new lottery bid developed Loughborough’s Carillon Tower museum will reopen in the spring while a new lottery bid is put together. The Carillon Memorial Trust had applied for £80,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to improve the museum but it has been told the bid has been unsuccessful. However the trust, which has been supported by Charnwood Borough Council is going to re-apply and is confident it can still secure funding. The museum closed in 2018 while the Council carried out a £280,000 conservation project on the tower. The museum wants to revamp its displays and make them more interactive, particularly for people who cannot access the top floor. That could involve the use of video displays. The overall aim is to improve the visitor experience for all and make the Carillon’s history and musical heritage accessible to as wide a range of audiences as possible. The Carillon is a grade two listed building and was built after the First World War to commemorate the men of Loughborough who gave their lives for their country. It carries the names of 800 men who died in both world wars and other conflicts. Construction was completed in 1923 and is 150 ft high. The 2018 conservation project included conservation work being carried out on windows, stonework, the copper roof and to the clavier. It also included improving lighting around the tower’s 47 bells so it is easier for visitors to admire the craftsmanship. The museum will reopen during the Easter school holidays in April and be open every Thursday after that until the autumn.

Jubilee Walk We are pleased to report following the presentation of the petition and Cllrs Radford and Tassell’s meeting with officers £50,000 has been put in the forthcoming Capital programme to improve Jubilee Walk footpath. Hopefully, this well used footpath should get improved; as yet we are not sure what Charnwood are proposing to do, but your Cllrs have arranged a meeting with officers to look at these proposals. Hall Croft – derelict building Following weeks of trying to get something down about the old cafe and fabric centre which has been causing residents major concerns due to anti-social behaviour and regular attendance of the police and fire service, a formal Notice to the owner of the property who has finally agreed to clear the site with the demolition of the building. Charnwood has received a demolition notice so it should not be very long at all before the buildings are removed and the site cleared. Charnwood have given the owner the details of the Regeneration Officers to discuss proposals for the site. We will keep you informed when we know what is happening to the site.
