Iveshead School Interact Club Are hosting a Charity Quiz in aid of The Bridge, an East Midlands based Charity dedicated to supporting the homeless in the local area.
New Year, New You? Most of us make new year resolutions but find it hard to stick to them. However, have you thought about volunteering in your community? Our volunteers include those who are taking career breaks, retirees as well as support workers and those with learning difficulties. Opportunities include cataloguing and sorting toys, fundraising (some of this can involve writing grants), working in our playroom (where we have a café and stationery shop) as well as helping with IT. The choice is yours! In return you can have free access to toys as well as gaining skills/references. If you are available on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning during term time, we would like to hear from you. We are also looking for trustees to help develop the Toy Library (can be available mornings and weekends). Shepshed Toy Library is a charity that started 33 years ago. During this time thousands of families have benefited from quality toy loans and guided play sessions. Toys range from 0 to children aged 8, with some board games suitable for all the family. We have story sacks, outdoor and indoor toys as well as dressing up clothes, DVD’s and jigsaws. Toys are loaned for a minimum of three weeks and can be renewed. Prices start from £6 per year. You can also loan out up to 12 toys for your own party. Our play room can be used for party hire with your choice of toys from our Toy Library. From January our play leader will be running family sessions with a ‘Space theme’. A morning session costs only £1.50 per family and children receive free juice and a biscuit. Situated on the Iveshead Campus next to the college, members come from as far away as Leicester and the neighbouring counties. We also benefit childminders, playgroups and schools. If you are thinking of positively recycling quality toys (with a CE mark) we are happy to receive your donations. We can also be found on Facebook and Twitter. Contact Catherine on 01509 601146 or email shepshedtoylib@yahoo.co.uk

ACT One Presents "OUR HOUSE"
Book by Tim Firth - Music by Madness An amateur production presented by arrangement with MTI Europe IVESHEAD THEATRE, SHEPSHED 7 - 10 FEBRUARY 2018 at 7.30 PM (2.30 PM Sat. Matinee) A bit of Madness coming to Shepshed in February
The Quiz will be held in Iveshead School Building A (formerly Shepshed High School) and begins at 6.30pm on Friday 12th January 2018. Tickets will cost £4 per person and can be bought exclusively on the door. Drinks and a raffle will be available on the night, and prizes will be given to the winning team of up to 6 people.
Shepshed History Society
Our House follows the story of London lad Joe Casey. On the night of his sixteenth birthday, an over-excited Joe takes Sarah, the girl of his dreams, out for a romantic evening. On a whim, he breaks into a new building development near his house to show Sarah the view over north London. When the police come, Joe faces a tough decision: to run, or give himself up. It is at this point that the story splits in two as we follow the fortunes, and misfortunes, of Good Joe and Bad Joe. The two differing paths of Joe Casey’s future are carefully watched over by Joe’s deceased father, who regrets his own criminal choices that saw him neglect his family. As the parallel worlds of Good and Bad Joe Casey head towards an explosive climax, we find out which decision the 16-year-old Joe made--to turn his back on a life of crime and do the right thing.
On the 12th December despite appalling weather conditions, members of the Shepshed History Society braved the elements as usual and thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas social evening which was an entertaining evening listening to Mr Adrian Dobson singing songs from the shows as well as many seasonal songs, it was an excellent performance, the singing was superb. Then members partook of a very enjoyable supper and warm punch.
This cleverly written story, by Calender Girls author Tim Firth, showcases the timeless hits of Madness - “Our House”, “It Must Be Love”, “Wings Of A Dove”. “Driving In My Car”, “Baggy Trousers” and many more. It won best musical at the Olivier Awards in 2003 and played several national tours as well as its time on the West End.
The meeting to be held on January 9th will be given by Mr Stephen Hartley, the subject to be The 16th century Apothecary.
Heading up the cast for this amazing show is 17-year-old Joe Harrison, who spends 99% of the show on stage, either as Good Joe or Bad Joe, with numerous costume changes in between. Olivia Needham plays his girlfriend Sarah, and their respective friends, Emmo, Lewis, Billie and Angie are played by Ben Dawson, Jed Leafe, Beth Edwards and Paige Brierley. Keeping the story in tow is Tom Hetzel as Joe’s Dad. His mum is played by Lulu Wright, and baddies, Reecey and Mr Pressman are played by Oliver Halford and Alex Leeson. Adrian Dobson directs the 35-strong cast from ACT One, Shepshed’s long-standing youth theatre for 10-18 year olds, with Musical Direction by Hazel Needham and Choreography by Wendy Spencer. The show is being performed at the Iveshead theatre in Shepshed (Formerly Hind Leys Theatre) from 7-10 February 2018 at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm). Tickets are priced at £11 & £9 available from the Box Office 07779 108743 (evenings and weekends). Get your ticket now for this unmissable event! We are always keen to encourage new members for our shows and in particular are looking for dancers for our next shows. Our next new members auditions are being held at the end of January. Please contact Adrian Dobson on 07904 303488 for details.
New members are always welcome.

Shepshed Bowls Club has raised the money for the vital life-saving equipment to be installed on the wall of its clubhouse, in Charnwood Road. It has also gained funding for the project from Shepshed Lions, Shepshed Rotary Club and local charity the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT), which provided the cash for an external defibrillator cabinet so that the equipment could be installed in a location that will be publicly-accessible, 24 hours a day.

Santa Clause narrated by Sandy Leong. The story is reported to
have started in the 15th century by three Spanish brothers who distributed gifts. The brothers
used to dress as black ravens and reputedly fly round the world
bringing back gifts from the four
corners of the world. The legend spread and grew and there was only one Santa Claus but he
still wore black robes. However in 1863 for the first time he appeared dressed in red.
Reindeer were introduced in
1921. These reindeer were all females and they do not lose
their antlers whereas the males
shed theirs in winter after mating. Christmas trees were introduced into this country by Queen
Victoria's husband Prince Albert.
John Carrington, men’s secretary at Shepshed Bowls Club, said: “Our sport tends to attract more mature participants and we were concerned to discover that the nearest public-access defibrillator to our club was almost 500 metres away. So, in April of this year, we decided to raise money for our own defibrillator, which we wanted to be accessible to the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We agreed the unit would be installed on the outside of our clubhouse, and it’s great to now have it in place. We’re very grateful to all of the charities and community organisations that have supported us in getting our club members trained and getting this vital piece of equipment in place, where it can benefit the whole community.” Charles Poole from the JHMT, who helped organise the supply and delivery of the outside cabinet in which the defibrillator is kept, said: "This is another example of local people getting together, identifying an urgent need for life-saving equipment in their community and working in partnership to make easy access to defibrillators a reality. We congratulate Shepshed Town Bowls Club on their fantastic efforts to raise funds for this project and we're delighted to provide the cabinet so that, if someone has a cardiac arrest in the area, the emergency 999 call to East Midlands Ambulance Service will give those on hand swift access to the defibrillator." The bowls club currently has 74 playing members and has always had success in county competitions, with many players representing Leicestershire. Last year, one of Shepshed’s female members was national champion in the England Bowls Women’s Senior Pairs.

Sorting Out The Seed Packets
Seeds At The Ready
Bountiful Harvest
The weather is cold & wet outside, so it’s a perfect time to sort through the seed packets I have stored away in a battered old shoe box. It love to sit with a cup of coffee in hand and the new seed catalogues by my side & plan what I’ll be growing in the coming year.
reliably large delicious cobs which are definitely worth the effort of growing and tending them. I couldn’t get the seed for that variety last year and sowed another which really wasn’t as good. Fingers crossed I can find some ‘Ovation’ this year!
Some of my favourite vegetables to grow are brassicas. As I’m so busy day to day designing and managing other peoples gardens I need to select produce which will keep well on the plant and in the fridge! Brassicas fit the bill. I like to grow Purple sprouting Broccoli – both Spring and Summer flowering forms. They grow strongly on my rich clay soil and don’t need much in the way of care. Once I’ve planted them, they’ll get a water when needed and I cover them with Enviromesh to keep the bugs, beasties and dreaded Pigeons off my precious produce.
I love beans too. Particularly French beans, climbing or dwarf. I do struggle with the dwarf varieties as I find they can get splashed with mud in heavy rain and are never quite as fresh again. The climbing varieties are better for me but they don’t crop as well or hold on the plant either. Happily I discovered the runner bean ‘Moonlight’ which has been crossed with a French bean to give tender green pods without the ‘strings’ some runner beans develop. A real winner of a variety, I’ll need to buy more seed this year.
I love to grow Kaibroc too which crops really quickly. I sowing in the spring will produce delicious green tender stem Broccoli shoots 10 weeks later! I tend to forget to resow these but they can be sown successionally to crop throughout the summer. I’ve tried growing various cabbages but I find that they all crop at once and don’t hold long enough for me.
Some seed I save like the Runner beans which come from my Dad. He’s been saving his own seed for years and now I have some of his prize seeds for my plot. I save pea seed too which reliably comes true to seed. Some packets of seed will last several years without diminishing the germination rate. I find that Tomatoes last well and I have successfully sown 3 year old Tommies with no problems.
I love to grow Sweetcorn too although I’m picky about which variety. ‘Ovation’ produces

Lettuce and salad crop seeds last a couple of years for me but I do like to buy fresh seed of the reliable salad bowl and butterhead types which a enjoy most. There’s nothing more disappointing than realising several weeks after sowing that the darn things aren’t going to germinate! I sort of the seed box is therapeutic for me and it’s a pleasure to thumb through the shiny seed catalogues to find my trusted favourites and a few new things to try each year. I hope I’ve tempted you to have a rummage through your seed packets in readiness for the growing season ahead. Next month I’ll be looking at selecting the best topiary for the garden.

County Councillor
Christine Radford
TINDLE
T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc. Warm Homes Initiative A ‘Warm Homes ‘service is helping vulnerable people across the county to save hundreds of pounds on their fuel bills. Living in a cold home can affect people’s health and well-being and Leicestershire County Council is offering advice through Warm homes, part of the council’s First Contact Plus advice and information hub. You can get help, in how to reset heating and hot water controls, updating energy supplier to ensure you are on the most affordable tariff. Other advice which can be offered includes debt relief support and more. Contact the service by calling 0116 305 4286 or visit www.firstcontactplus.org.uk Children’s Heart Unit I was delighted that NHS England have done the right thing and retained the invaluable service at Glenfield Hospital and the LRI. The local NHS will still need to satisfy national standards but the recent announcement was what the splendid campaign to keep the service here deserved. Parking Outside Schools It is general accepted that there are problems around many schools with the parking of parents’ cars when dropping off and collecting children. At a recent meeting of the Environment and Transport Overview and Scrutiny Committee when Camera Enforcement of School Keep Clear Projects was discussed and the committee were informed that Cabinet had approved the release of £200,000 in 2017/18 and £300,000 in 2018/19 to better manage school parking concerns, through camera enforcement of school ‘zig zag ’markings. Some parking offences are endorsable, such as where parked vehicles cause safety hazards. It is acknowledged that the large part of school congestion is a behavioural issue. Parents do have safety concerns about their children walking to school near too inconsiderate parked cars. National Probation Service I attended a briefing given by the National Probation Service (NPS) and learnt that the probation Service was divided into seven regions and 21 new community rehabilitation companies (CRCs). The Leicester, Leics and Rutland
NPS did 2,000 court reports a year, with 1700 Offenders managed, 800 in the community and 900 in custody. Preventing Suicide The leader spoke at a recent full Council about organisations who have worked together in Peterborough and Cambridge and what they have achieved. He went on to report that around three quarters of all suicides occur in men, but rates are rising in women. It remains the biggest killer of men under 50 and the leading cause of death in people aged 15-24. Roughly 60 people per year across Leicestershire die from suicide. The leader has asked the Director of Public Health to see what can be done to replicate the approach of Peterborough and Cambridge and report back/ develop it here at Councty. Cabinet Support Role In my role as Cabinet Support to 2 Cabinet members I was taken around the area by Officers looking at measures being taken to mitigate flood prevention. Such as the impact new housing developments – large or small have on the environment, new roads such as the bye-pass at Earl Shilton. In some cases this can even improve the habitat for wild life. My second day of site visits was to take a tour of the major road/ transport improvements either recent/current/proposed. I visited the site at Toton for the proposed HS2, the areas around Junction 24 of the M1, to see what has already been carried out at this junction, where the HS2 will run and the area earmarked for the new Transport Hub. The improvements already constructed at junction 13 of the M42 and then on into the Hinckley and Blaby areas. Both days were full on and very interesting and gave me an insight in how things work from the start to the finish. Waste Initiative Events I promised to keep you informed about initiatives in the area. On 2nd February there will be a furniture upcycling class at the SureStart Children’s centre in Coalville. 24th February another furniture upcycling class at Fearon Hall in Loughborough. Give or Take unwanted Christmas presents will be held on 20th January in the Fearon Hall in Loughborough. For more information contact Anna Low on 0116 305 8127. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or e mail christine_ radford@hotmail.com or christine. radford@leics.gov.uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road, 10-11am.

Borough Councillor
Christine Radford
T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com We can be contacted on any matters concerning Charnwood Borough Council either by telephone or email (see below for numbers and addresses). We deal with housing problems, (such as trying to move house; unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property; problems with neighbours; or Anti-Social Behaviour, whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property. We also deal with planning issues. CCTV At a recent meeting of the Town Council, the Police were in attendance to bring the Council up to date with crime figures. A question was asked by Cllr Peter Grainger – Conservative Town Councillor- as to how the Police felt about CCTV being installed in the centre of Shepshed. The response from the Police Officer in attendance was very positive stating that that it would be extremely useful in helping the police in its ability to solve crime. Your 4 Borough Conservative Councillors are all in favour of CCTV and are working hard to get Charnwood Borough Council, which has already given the Town Team money for shop front improvements, to use the remaining money for CCTV. Even the Leader of the (Borough) Council is in agreement for the funds to be used by Shepshed on CCTV. Yet the controlling Labour Group on the Town Council are in danger of throwing it away as they are resisting paying the annual maintenance which will be less than £2,000 per year. This is a small amount in comparison to what is already funded by the Town Council. The Town Council recently passed the pre-cept (i.e. the budget) for 2018/19. As well as supporting the Volunteer Centre (£6,000), the CAB (£9,294), Glenmore Centre (£3,960) and the Football Pavilion on Little Haw Lane (approx. £6,000), this year, for the first time, the Town Council have also decided to help the Shepshed Special Community Bus by precepting £3,000 towards a new small bus. If this is repeated annually, there should be enough for a replacement bus when one is needed. Nicky Morgan MP All 4 of your conservative Borough Councillors and your 2 Town Councillors are very disappointed that Nicky Morgan MP felt it necessary to vote against the Government at a time when the Prime Minister needs the full support of Conservative MPs. Where BREXIT was concerned, there had already been an agreement between the EU and Britain over money, and they are now moving on to Trade discussions. Some of us have written personally to Nicky expressing our frustration at her stance. Dog Muck Following on from our report last month, we have received a number of concerns raised by residents of dog fouling in their area. The large majority of points raised were, even if dog owners pick up the mess, they then just throw the bag in the hedge/bushes/trees. On estates which are open plan, some dog owners are allowing their dogs to foul other people’s properties. This is not acceptable.
