The Wages Of Sin By Johnny Opposite The wages of sin 'tis humanity's yoke If it wasn't so cruel it could be a sick joke Austerity now forever to be The reason? Sure. Banker's rule the world you see Never enough money to pay back incurred debt Keep spending's the motto. Enjoy what the heck! Interest to be added. A hell of a sting All taken for granted. It's just the done thing Money made out of nothing; figures on a screen Credit and debt is not all that it seems Governments could issue it all by themselves Why would they hand over the keys to such wealth? Try printing your own. 'Twould be counterfeit Yet private banks do whatever's seen fit How could such a dastardly scheme come to pass? Ssssshhhhh! Don't tell the children. You're supposed not to ask The exchequer borrows cash to splash on some plan Where does it all come from? Guess if you can? The sheep unaware never check for the facts But hey never mind they'll be fleeced for their tax Bet you thought your tax went to pay for some scheme? Not to the dark suits from the unseen But for this madness you could relax a bit And spend your own money on whatever you saw fit Bankers mess up but deemed too big to fail Anyone else would be slung straight in jail Then soon enough dodgy business again 'Til next time it's worse. Just a question of when The next time it won't be the lame bail-out 'Cos we've put up with that you should be in no doubt The next time it will be known as the great bail-in Your bank account stolen to pay for their sin Think this a story the people to scare? Think Cyprus and Greece. Already done there Diabolical plans as yet unfurled What you gonna do? The bankers own the world! Out of all of the nonsense they teach kids at school Teach them nothing 'bout money seems to be the main rule Questions not asked; answers not told Vast fortunes to be made; souls to be sold Try writing a letter to your Member of Parliament Making all of your points; explaining your argument Don't expect to be given the answer you're after Your views matter not; they'll be greeted with laughter That's assuming your servant relates to your bothers We're all in it together but some more than others So long as you don't expect them to listen Head down, nose clean, paid for by the system As long as we deign to join in this mad game Nothing can change but must stay much the same What will it take for the world to awaken? To have the changers of money removed from the equation

Shepshed Probus Club

Shepshed Twinning Find Sheppy & More…

Our meeting of 4th June was opened by our President Horace Lister who asked for a minute’s silence in remembrance of Jim Lawson, a club member who sadly passed away at the end of May, after which our Secretary Wilf Shelton continued with club business. The members were then regaled by 3 funny stories from Stan White after which grace was said before our 4 course lunch after which our speaker was reintroduced as Dr Mike Ferguson who went on to speak about mercy ships.

Members of SDTA had an enjoyable midsummer’s day out walking at the Dimminsdale Nature Reserve in north Leicestershire.

Dr Ferguson retired from English medicine in 2014 and spent some time looking for a suitable charity to volunteer for, eventually finding mercy ships and in particular “African Mercy” which was a disused ferry. It was bought by a sponsor who helped to get it converted into a hospital ship with 5 operating theatres. The ship only deals with trauma cases not medication. It is based in Cameroon and Benin spending 4 months in each country before going back to it’s home port for refurbishment, which apart from a paint job, means steam cleaning the 5 operating theatres and dental surgery. All the equipment is stripped out to allow the rooms to be thoroughly cleaned before being put back together. When the ship is fully operational it deals with 1500 dental operations and as many as 16,000 patients are seen by the practitioner on the ship. A new ship is being built in China which will have 6 operating theatres and will be able to do twice as many operations in much better conditions. Dr Ferguson has now retired to spend time with his family. After his talk our President asked members to show their appreciation, after which he reminded everyone of the next meeting. If you are interested in joining the club please contact our Secretary, Wilf Shelton on 01509 769802.

Shepshed Ramblers Shepshed Ramblers will next walk on Sunday 15 July departing Shepshed Market Place at 09.30 and heading to Hathern. After a circular walk of approximately 6 miles the group will return between 2.00pm and 3.00pm. For sustenance please take both a coffee break and packed lunch. If you require any further information please contact Margaret on 01509 600510 or Bernie on 01509 828328. A warm welcome to new members is guaranteed.

Shady woodland at the start the walk was appreciated as the temperatures were forecast to rise and there was lots to see and talk about - fabulous foxgloves, inviting ponds and a burned out car. For over 200 years the area used to be an important industrial zone producing lead ore and lime, but today most of it is covered by dense woodland and brambles. In the open country we walked along the route of the old tram line complete with a couple of short tunnels. Later the walk turned into a treasure hunt – a bunch of cycle lock keys on the path, fortunately near the end of our walk we found the young owner. Next in the middle of a field, a spanking new, sharp yellow pencil. We didn’t find the owner of this, so it now rests in our trophy cupboard…. Our star find was meeting the real Sheppy, resting under the trees with a few of his friends.

Lunch was munched under the boughs of a copse of gnarled ancient chestnut trees and just before we arrived back at the car park we spotted the majestic Calke Abbey in the distance. If you weren’t there you missed a treat!

Plaque Found This plaque which has been delivered to the Town Council Office, it was found whilst an area of land on Bridge Street was being cleaned up. Does anyone know if anybody is missing the plaque or if anybody knows of its origin? Please let Brenda Snape by calling 01509 508872.

PHOTO: Where do we go from here? Our next event will be our participation in the Shepshed Carnival on 27th August. Why not drop in and see us, we welcome all age groups and backgrounds and have great fun. For more information and contact details visit our website, www.shepshedtwinning.co.uk or see us on Facebook - Shepshed and District Twinning Association.

Shepshed History Society On Tuesday 12th June the Society enjoyed a talk by Mr.Mark Temple entitled 'The Lost Windmills of Leicestershire'. Quoting archives from as early as the 12th century, Mark outlined the history and design development of the 155 known windmills in the county, most of which have vanished without trace, superseded by more modern technology, and leaving pub and street names as their only legacy. There is now only one functioning windmill in the county, namely that at Wissendine near Melton Mowbray, although there are two under extensive restoration which may, one day, mill again. The next meeting will be on Tuesday July 10th, addressed by Sally Henson and entitled 'The Plague', and on August 14th the group will visit Hough Mill near Swannington. Booking is required for the latter.

Shepshed Labour Councillor Surgeries Are held on the second Saturday of each month at Shepshed Town Council offices in Charnwood Road from 11am until 12 noon. Labour Councillors would love to meet you and help you deal with any issues that you may have. All Shepshed residents are welcome. If you unable to come along please telephone 01509 277012 and we will do our best to help.

5 Tips For A Magical Unicorn Party From Timmy @ PartySaveSmile.co.uk Hi guys….Timmy again from PartySaveSmile.co.uk here, I hope you all enjoyed last month’s article about Unicorn party trends! What theme took your fancy? This month we are looking at a few Top Tips to make your Unicorn party totally magical! You are at that point where you have decided what Unicorn Theme is right for your party – you have a list of the supplies you are going to need to cater for your guests – now for the fun stuff, the added sparkle. At PartySaveSmile.co.uk we are often asked by our customers for some inspiration, extra party ideas and finishing touches, at the moment for Unicorn parties in particular… so, I thought I would share a few with you! Here are a few top tips for you to ensure your party guests have a magical time at your child’s party: 1) Create Rainbow Balloon Tails! Why not transform even the simplest plain coloured balloon into a Unicorn Rainbow Themed Balloon Tail! You will need several colours of Balloon Ribbon (Yellow, Pink, Red, Green and Blue are most popular). All you need to do is cut lengths of the different colours of ribbon and tie the lengths to the neck of the balloon, where you knot it! If you are feeling brave you could event cluster a few Balloons together and hang one Rainbow coloured tail from each cluster! How’s that for a Magical Tip!? 2) Use Marble Effect Balloons Another simple way to achieve this look is to use some Marble patterned balloons that are rainbow colour themed, they look great! If you ensure you get enough of these for one per guest, you could even give your guests a piece of the Unicorn Rainbow to take home with them and let the magic carry on when they get home. 3) Unicorn Rainbow Crepe Streamers Create your own Unicorn Backdrop using Crepe Streamers, attach them together to make a backdrop for your party. All you need to do is choose your colours and cut the streamers to length, then fix them together with some tape! We have a great range of streamers on our website as well as some tape too! 4) Colour you Own Unicorn Favour Mug Provide your guests with a Colour Your Own Unicorn Mug to complete at the party, they can also then take this home as a keepsake to remember the magic at your party. They go great with our Unicorn Sweetie Cones, and look amazing alongside our Pre-Filled Unicorn party bags! You could even fill this with treats and favours too! Why not award a gift to the child whose mug is best coloured – this is a great activity to give you a breather when you need to get the next part of your party ready. 5) Unicorn Cookie Cutters More of a baker? Why not make your own Unicorn cookies or biscuits before your party. Our Unicorn shaped cookie cutter will make sure you cook up the perfect Unicorns time after time. You could then decorate these ready for your party table – but why not bake a few extras for your guests and make an activity of it?! Challenge your guests to decorate their own Unicorn cookie as a fun filled activity at the party. They will love tasting their own little Unicorn cookie creations! They are a great photo opportunity. We would love you to share your creations with us over on Facebook or Instagram @partysavesmile The secret to success when it comes to a party is to keep things on theme and in your comfort zone. Simple can be very effective if done correctly! When it comes to Unicorns bright colours and Rainbows are essential!

Charnwood Entrepreneur Is Back In Business Stronger Than Ever Following A Life Changing Injury Shepshed businesswoman, Jo Finch, is back in business with her new company Charnwood Bookkeeping. At the end of 2016, Jo broke her elbow in a fall and needed two hospital operations, preventing her from running her catering business. Unfortunately there were complications and Jo has lost significant movement in her arm, which may never be regained. 10 months after the accident, Jo was able to return to work but was unable to continue in the catering business. However, Jo has a strong work ethic and was determined to start a new business which would help other local businesses. Jo has 30 years’ experience in business finance and is passionate about helping local small businesses to get their finances right. “I wanted to set up a business which could provide more than just bookkeeping. Polarised Lenses, Less Glare, Enhanced Colour & Total Protection! Polarised lenses offer great protection, comfort and safety, outdoors and when driving. More than just a sun lens, Polarised lenses eliminate glare & enhance colour, whilst protecting the eyes from damaging UVA & UVB rays. They are ideal for driving, sports and other outdoor activities. Available in a range of colours, including brown, grey and grey-green. They can be made as prescription lenses across a wide range designs, including single vision & varifocals and high index materials for thinner lenses in stronger prescriptions. Polarised Lenses explained Polarised lenses do what no other lens or lens treatment can - block blinding glare. In addition, polarised lenses can enhance visual acuity, colour contrast and visual comfort, and block 100% of harmful UVA and UVB light. We’ve all experienced glare in our daily lives, perhaps whilst spending the day at the beach, driving in a car with the sun reflecting off the dashboard, roadway or bonnet or on a boat with the sun reflecting off the surface of the water, Usually, this glare is annoying and uncomfortable on the eyes, but when the angle of reflection is just right, the glare can become blinding and often dangerous, as in the case of driving a vehicle. Ordinary tinted sunglass lenses only cut down on ambient light that reaches the eye. By their very nature, they cannot block glare. Only polarised lenses can block out this dangerous, blinding glare. What is Glare? When light bounces off of a surface, it’s light waves travel in all directions: some light travels in horizontal waves, while others travel in vertical waves. When light hits a surface, typically light waves are absorbed and/or reflected in a random manner. However, if light hits a reflective surface (such as water, snow, even cars or buildings) at just the right angle, some of the light becomes "polarised”. This means that vertical light waves are absorbed while horizontal light waves bounce off the surface, this light can become polarized, resulting in glare that can interfere with your vision by striking the viewer's eyes intensely. Only polarised lenses can remove this glare.

What is a Polarised Lens? Polarised lenses are laminated with tiny vertical stripes that only allow vertically angled light to enter the wearer's eyes. Glare is eliminated because the horizontal light waves cannot bypass the vertical filter. Polarised Lens Benefits: • Drivers, fisherman, and photographers were some of the first to use polarised lenses. • Reducing glare can ease the eye strain drivers feel from long hours on the road. • Fishermen can often see under the surface of water using the lenses, which helps them to see fish or other objects. • Photographers use polarising filters on camera lenses to enrich the images they capture by giving them more contrast, and to increase the range of effects they can produce. • In addition to blocking blinding glare, polarised lenses can also help you to see better by improving contrast and visual comfort and acuity. Polarised Lens Limitations: • Because the polarising stripes reduce the amount of light entering the eye, these lenses should not be used at night or in other situations where clear lenses are required. It is not possible to make such lenses truly clear; even those with low levels of polarisation have a slightly gray hue. • Polarised lenses can cause distortions in the way wearers see liquid crystal displays (LCDs), rendering some cell phone screens, clocks, and other displays unreadable. • Pilots should not use polarised glasses because they can make flight instruments difficult to read and other objects in the sky — including other airplanes — less visible. How To Buy Polarised Lens Protection: Buying Polarised Lenses and enhancing your visual acuity, colour contrast, visual comfort and also blocking out 100% of harmful UVA and UVB light is as simple as adding it to your lens options when choosing your lenses. Please don't hesitate to contact us should you require any further information. We will be happy to assist you in selecting the correct lens options for your prescription, lifestyle and budget. County Councillor

Christine Radford

T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc. Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) A TTRO is required on Tickow Lane from 2nd July for 22 weeks. The road will be closed between the junction of the A512 Ashby Road West and the junction of Anson Road. It is to allow Cadent Gas to undertake a Gas Main diversion works and M & J Evans Construction Limited to undertake carriageway alteration works in connection with the Wm Davis Development. The Outcome Of The Consultation On A New Leicestershire School Term-Times An eight week consultation exercise was undertaken from 5th February 2018 to 2nd April 2018. This was widely publicised through the Local Authority’s website and local press and the Council engaged with a range of stakeholders including parents/ carers, schools, governing bodies. Views were sought on three options. County received a total of 6122 responses, the majority of responses received (71%) were in favour of Option 1, which was to remain with Leicestershire’s traditional patterns. Following the overwhelming support for retaining the current pattern of Leicestershire school term dates, Cabinet proposed to adopt Option 1 for schools controlled by the Local Authority. With regard to the proposal to allow schools to set the dates for their INSET days, 60% supported the proposal with 13% opposed and 27% undecided. It is therefore recommended that this be agreed. Managing Traffic In Leicestershire Communities At a recent meeting of the Cabinet on 12th June the below recommendations were agreed:• That the continued use of parking reviews, as part of the Council’s traffic management programme, be approved; • That it be noted that individual reviews will be carried out as part of this process over the next two years (2018/19 and 2019/20) and proposed changes being the subject of action plans for the town in question and subject to further consideration; • That it be noted that the outline proposals to introduce on-street parking charges as set out in the Council’s Medium Term Financial Strategy will not be taken forward at present. Trading Standards Service Criminal proceedings were instituted against 33 defendants relating to a range of unfair trading practices, 12 of which have now been sentenced, 1 defendant received a 3 year custodial sentence. The Trading Standards Scams Intervention Team provided continued support to over 200 victims of postal, telephone and doorstep scams. The successful interventions prevented the victims incurring further losses, collectively estimated at £500,000. Adults & Communities are providing some funding in 2018/19 to enable this initiative to continue. The team responded to 300 cold calling incidents alleging fraud or

unfair trading practices occurring at residential properties across the County. In partnership with UK Border Force 158,000 unsafe or non-compliant goods, with a retail value of over £2 Million, were prevented from entering the market place via East Midlands Airport. £100,000 of dangerous illicit or counterfeit tobacco products seized from high street trading premises located in Leicestershire. Trading Standards animal health officers dealt with over 500 enquiries concerned with animal welfare and disease prevention controls. Criminal proceeds were instituted against 2 defendants for serious breaches of the Animal Welfare Act 2006 (farmed animals).

My Fun Week Of Adventure The Rotary clubs of Shepshed and Shepshed Charnwood enjoyed hearing about Miles’ week at Calvert Trust near Keswick. Calvert Trust enables people with disabilities to experience exciting, challenging and enjoyable outdoor activities. Both clubs had funded this trip along with a Rotary District grant organised by Rotarian Janet Sinclair of Rotary club of Shepshed who as part of the criteria for funding accompanied Miles on the trip. On the final night the group enjoyed the disco where Miles was presented with a photo album recording his week’s activities. He also received a certificate as he won the pool pairs competition with Rotarian Nick.

250 Leicestershire businesses were supported through the provision of detailed regulatory advice. 180 food comprehensive advisory visits were undertaken to monitor food standards and support Leicestershire businesses. Annual Report As your County Councillor I presented my annual Report to the Annual meeting of the Town Council on the 6th June. A copy can be made available if you wish and is on the County web page. One thing I did raise with the Chairman of the Council and the controlling group was my concern as to why the Town Council are not proposing to mark the 100 years since the end of The Great War as the Town Council did commemorate the start of the war. The answer I received is they are not doing anything. I mention this as I have been approached by a number of residents as to what is happening, the answer is again nothing. (See the Charnwood Report). Sky Link bus Sky Link have amended slightly bus times on a Monday to Friday to adjust the running times on peak journeys to improve reliability at 05.10am and 6am. Journeys from Coalville will depart 5 minutes earlier. This will come into effect on Monday 23rd July. HS2 update I represented County at a meeting of the Mitigation Board which I found very interesting as I am very interested in railways and took a lot of railway holidays with my husband when he was alive. I am aware that HS2 will not impact on Shepshed but should any resident be interested information events are taking place around the area. By the time I received the dates and venue most of them will have already taken place before you receive this issue. The nearest one to Shepshed is on Thursday 12th July in the Measham Leisure Centre, High Street Measham, DE12 7HR from 2pm-8pm. Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such as overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or e mail christine_radford@ hotmail.com or christine.radford@ leics.gov.uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road 10-11am.

On the last day Miles had a lot of fun canoeing down Lake Bassenthwaite.

The clubs heard of the activities Miles took part in which included rock climbing and abseiling both in the hall at the centre and outside. The group also enjoyed a lovely walk at Buttermere with Miles helping to push the wheelchairs.

Miles clearly enjoyed his week at Calvert Trust and reliving in his achievements so much under the support of Rotarians and the staff at the centre that encourage the participants to stretch themselves and show what they can achieve. Miles thanked both clubs for their support.

It is 20 years since Miles was sponsored by Rotary club of Shepshed to go and he told of some of the changes which he enjoyed at the centre these included a lovely new swimming pool and the high ropes course that has just been added. Miles also did archery that was not included last time after enjoying again the horse riding and the steeplechase course at Mirehouse.

Borough Councillor

Christine Radford

T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com We can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough Council. We deal with housing problems, (such as trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour, whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property. We also deal with planning issues. Planning Land at Tickow Lane – Watery Lane A planning application in respect of a proposed residential development will soon be submitted to Charnwood on behalf of The Grace Dieu and Longcliffe Estates. A public exhibition was held in the Town Council Offices on 12th June between 3-8pm. The area of land is on the other side of Tickow Lane from the Wm Davis estate currently being developed. It was very well attended by residents and we are very grateful for that. When the application has been lodged formerly at Charnwood we will inform you of the planning application number to quote when you write into Charnwood with your comments. May we ask that you copy your Borough Cllrs in with your comments? Plaque Scheme Launched To Celebrate Charnwood’s Rich Heritage The Charnwood Heritage Plaque Scheme is being led by the borough council and aims to bring history to life for current and future generations. The first plaque will honour the 158 Logistics Regiment and 203 Transport Squadron and the town’s links to the Armed Forces. The plaque was unveiled at the Army Reserve Centre in Leicester Road, Loughborough on June 30th. A plaque honouring the centenary of the end of World War One will be unveiled in Loughborough town centre on Sunday 11th November. The scheme aims to install up to five plaques a year. The scheme will also highlight important people, places and events to future generations and it is hoped the stories behind the plaques will prove to be of interest and even inspiring for future generations. The Council would like to hear from communities and organisations about suggestions for a Charnwood Heritage Plaque. For more information or to nominate a person, place or event for consideration please visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/heritage_ plaques Events To Mark 100 Years Since End Of The Great War A series of poignant events are planned in Charnwood to mark 100 years since the end of World War One. Charnwood Borough Council are coordinating and supporting events on Sunday November 11th and is calling on residents to get involved. One of the focal points will be a fullsize replica warhorse, covered with poppies made by local children, which will make a journey from Charnwood Museum to the town centre. This will be in memory of Songster – a warhorse from Loughborough who served between 1914 and 1918 who received several medals for his bravery and remarkably made it back to the town safely. There will also be events in Loughborough town Centre, including

a live showcase plus a big screen, a tea dance at Loughborough Town Hall as well as the annual Remembrance Day parade ending with a service at the Carillon where thousands of poppies will cascade from the top. There will also be the lighting of a beacon in Queen’s Park at 7pm as part of a nationwide beacon-lighting scheme. A recital at the Carillon just after 7pm will take place when church bells across the country are being urged to join a national peal of bells. There will also be a range of commemorative exhibitions and workshops in Charnwood Museum and Loughborough Town Hall in the run-up to the day. For further information email events@charnwood.gov.uk or www.charnwood.gov.uk/ww1 Garden Waste Bins Residents are being advised that any garden waste bins which are not displaying valid subscription stickers will start being removed. A number of properties are still putting out bins to be emptied despite not paying for the service. There are several hundred properties which consistently leave out the bins despite not having a valid subscription and being issued with various reminders and warnings. If you have a paid garden waste subscription please ensure it is displaying a valid sticker. If you do not put a sticker on, it will not be emptied and a leaflet will be left explaining why it has not been collected. Get Out And Active In Charnwood This Summer The Council‘s Active Charnwood team have put together a range of events and sessions at various locations in the area for children, young people and families. Activities will run from Monday July 16th to Friday 24th August. The holiday programme provides a number of opportunities to get active this summer and with 33 different activities and 100 sessions there’s something for everyone. Activities include boxing, climbing, dodgeball, forest schools, geocaching, laser quest, yoga and more. New for this year is abseiling, archer legends, beginner’s taekwondo, hockey and indoor bowls. To book call 01509 634561 or email active.together@charnwood.gov.uk. On Going Issues Planning and Anti-Social behaviour (majority of it confidential) is still taking up a large amount of our time. Do not hesitate to contact us should you have issues you wish to discuss with us. We shall continue to hold our regular monthly surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council offices, Charnwood Road, from 10-11am. No appointments are necessary.
