Shepshed History Society An exceptional and highly entertaining talk was given to Shepshed History Society on May 9th when Mr Stephen Flinders gave an in depth talk on the life of his wife's great, great Grandfather Robert Napoleon Walker. Born in 1832 this previously long forgotten man had an amazing life to relate. Beginning when leaving his first wife back in England he travelled to Africa and became a trader in African artefacts, ivory, ebony, jewellery etc and he was soon to become very rich. Sadly though his first wife died and he went onto marry a second English wife, 18 years old who didn't take kindly to being left on her own back in England and had her own misadventures to recall. Especially when Robert took on an African mistress who went onto to have two half caste children. The boy Andre Raponda Walker was later to be ordained as the first Catholic Priest in Africa and became a very well known author. Later giving up trading Robert tried his hand at running an ice rink back in England but this sadly proved to be a failure. So the lure of Africa being too strong he began another venture there of mining for gold, which had been financed by several very unwise speculators back in England. Sadly though that was to prove to be another disaster as the proposed land was nothing more than a swamp. Stephen went onto to explain that his wife's great, great, great Grandfather was connected to the Battle of Trafalgar and that explained why his son Robert was christened Napoleon but that was another story later to be told. And so the absorbing tales came thick and fast as the night progressed ending up sadly by finding Robert dying in 1901. After a very long search by Stephen and his wife, they eventually found his grave smothered under a multitude of weeds in a London cemetery, with not a soul to care that he had ever existed - until now that is! An excellent talk to be highly recommended. The June meeting on the second Tuesday of the month will be given by Mrs Kath Reynolds and the subject to be Goose Grease and Brown Paper. Please feel free to join us.

Members of Shepshed WI met in May to talk about the resolutions which had been chosen for discussion and voting on at the forthcoming National Annual Meeting being held in Liverpool in June. The two resolutions were ‘Alleviating loneliness’ and ‘Keeping microplastic fibres out of our oceans’. Later members enjoyed a mystery auction where everyone brought a wrapped item attached to which was an anagram or something to hint at what might be inside and then members had to bid on a mystery parcel, which proved to be unusual and fun. A successful cake stall was held in the Hallcroft on 5th May which included giving flowers to people passing by. SHEPSHED LIONS CLUB NEWS www.shepshedlions.org
Shepshed Lions Club Is Looking For New Members The first Lions Club was established in 1917, and there are now 1.4 million members of Lions Clubs in over 200 countries. Shepshed Lions Club was established in 1987, and has become an important part of our community, working hard to live up to the Lions motto, 'We Serve'. We meet at Livio’s Restaurant at 8pm on the first Monday of every month (excluding Bank Holidays, when we meet on the second Monday of the month). Our meetings are informal and deal with the business of the club, including planning future events, organizing staffing for events, dealing with funding requests and planning social events. Membership is open to male and female applicants aged over 18years of age. There is an annual subscription fee of £65 that can be paid in instalments over the year. This an opportunity to make new friends, contribute to the work of the largest service organization in the world, support your local community and have fun. We are looking for new members to help take the Club forward to continue what we do for our community. If you have some free time, an honest background and a willingness to serve your local community please contact Lion Bob Lilley on 01509 508265 or by e-mail at thelilleys15@gmail.com. However, if you do not feel able to commit to joining the club, you may still be able to help. In our larger events, such as the Annual Charity Carnival or the Christmas Santa Collections, we sometimes need a little extra help. Would you be prepared to offer some time to support the club? If so, please contact Bob Lilley as above.
Shepshed Lions Club 8th Annual Charity Carnival Shepshed Lions Club is delighted to announce sponsors for the 8th Annual Charity Carnival to be held on Glenmore Park Shepshed on Bank Holiday Monday 28th August 2017. Major sponsors so far for this year’s event are Sherwood’s Transport and Meggitt Composites and Polymers. These
companies have generously supported this event since the Carnival came into existence. Another sponsor is the Loughborough Building Society who has generously supported this event for the past three year’s. Mick Sloan of Primo IT has also agreed to sponsor this year’s event. Again, this local company has generously supported the Carnival since its inception. Charnwood Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC have also agreed to sponsor the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responder stand at the Carnival. This again is a regular sponsor to this popular community event and we are grateful for their continued support. Without these sponsors supporting this very popular community event Shepshed Lions Club could not provide the high quality of entertainment that it does. Our objectives are to have a great event to bring our community together, hopefully on a sunny day! And raise much needed funds for the local charities that the club supports through the year. We are also being generously supported by Bill and Winnie Cooling Butchers who are providing some of the food for the BBQ at the event. We are also supported by Shepshed Town Council who sponsor and advertisement in the Shepshed Eye magazine and permit to hold the Carnival on the Glenmore Park each year. Shepshed Lions Club would like to thank all of our sponsors. We are still looking for other sponsors to support the Carnival. We still would like to find a Main Sponsor for the event so if you and your company would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please contact Lion Bob Lilley on 01509 508265 or by e-mail at thelilleys15@gmail.com. There are other sponsorship opportunities including sponsorship of an arena act, or another attraction at the Carnival. All sponsors will be included in our Carnival brochure, and given mentions by the PA at the event on the day. Please consider sponsorship of this popular event. There are also advertising opportunities in our professionally produced Carnival Brochure. The rates for advertising are very competitive and are as follows: Quarter Page £15, Half Page £30
and a Full Page £50. If you need any artwork preparing there will be an additional charge of £30.

Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders
Public Access Defibrillators
Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders continue to support the local communities in Loughborough, Shepshed and the surrounding villages. The team is made up of volunteers who freely give their time to attend incidents in conjunction with East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS). The volunteers are trained by EMAS and attend incidents including Cardiac Arrest, Heart Attack, Angina, Stroke, Diabetic emergencies, Fitting, Trauma and other emergencies. The scheme does not receive any Government funding and is supported by donations form members of the public and sponsorship. Would you know what to do if someone collapses and stops breathing? Would you know how to use a Defibrillator to try and save someone’s life? If the answer is no then all is not lost. One way the scheme raises funds to buy new, modern equipment or replace other equipment, is to give community groups or works groups presentations and demonstrations on how to do CPR effectively and use a defibrillator. If you would like a demonstration please contact Lion Bob Lilley on 01509 508265 or by e-mail at thelilleys15@gmail.com. We do not have a set charge for these events but invite you to make a donation to support the scheme. If you are interested in becoming a Community First Responder please contact Lion Bob Lilley on 01509 508265 or by e-mail at thelilleys15@gmail.com. We would welcome new members. At the Shepshed Lions Club meeting on Monday 8th May 2017 there was a surprise for Lion Bob Lilley. His Granddaughter Jessica Docherty, aged 10 years, presented him with £103 towards the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders Scheme. She raised the funds by arranging a colouring competition at her school, St Winefrides Voluntary Catholic Academy, and presented the winners with chocolate eggs as part of the academy's Lent Projects. The presentation was made in the presence of the Lions District Governor Barvinder Singh Sokhi, who presented Jessica with a
When someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest, prompt action by anyone nearby offers their only chance of survival. An immediate 999 call for an ambulance and starting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) immediately are essential. Most people who survive will have needed a shock from a defibrillator to correct a chaotic heart rhythm. Defibrillators are located within local communities, often in a locked cabinet. If you dial 999 for a patient who is unconscious and not breathing the emergency call handler will give you instructions on where you can find your nearest defibrillator and how to access it. Do you have a defibrillator in your workplace? Does your local shop have one on the wall? Registering your defibrillator could save precious time in an emergency and mean EMAS can advise the caller to fetch the defibrillator to use on the patient. Registering is free and does not replace the need for an ambulance response To register your defib please email the Community Response team community.responder@emas.nhs.uk at EMAS with the following information: • The address, including the postcode and opening times if the property is commercial • The location of defibrillator at the property • The contact name, number and email address of the person on site who is responsible for your defibrillator • If the defibrillator is in a locked cabinet outside, the code for the cabinet www.emas.nhs.uk/your-service/ community-response

Garden Screening
Bespoke Trellis
We’re finally seeing some sunshine and warmth after a long cold spring. My own garden is filling out nicely with lush foliage and plenty of colourful blooms. My boundary fences have had a spruce up with a fresh coat of paint and the privet hedges are looking smart after on early trim. Increasingly often I’m being contacted by home owners who are overlooked by neighbours and would like more privacy. I find that new build homes are often overlooked from all sides and can have as many as 5 neighbouring properties having a clear view into the garden and through windows. There are several options I recommend for screening in such circumstances. The style of the garden, level of maintenance required and the budget are all things I take into account when selecting the right option for a garden design plan.
Pleached Tree
Timber fencing and trellis: Typical low screening options which most of us have in the garden to surround our property. Usually they will provide screening from 3-6ft high and can be topped with additional trellis to give another 12-18 inches of height. ‘Off the shelf’ fencing/trellis is a cheap option and is relatively straight forward to erect. Bespoke Timber Screening: Where more height is required, free-standing timber screens can

be erected. Using sturdy posts, bespoke trellis work can be designed and attached to give a screen above existing fencing. The trellis work will allow some air flow so that buffeting winds do not cause the posts to move. Climbers can be encouraged to climb up to the trellis and give further screening as well as colour and interest. Pergolas: If adding height to the boundaries is not an option, then erecting a building such as a pergola can offer privacy within the garden itself. Clothed with climbers or with a suspended sail cloth, these will offer a secluded spot to sit and some shade from the summer sun. Hedges: Various plants can be used for hedging and often this is the most cost effective way of screening along a boundary. Shrubs such as Privet, Yew, Holly and Pyracantha will offer evergreen structure and privacy throughout the year. They will require trimming at least twice a year so they are not maintenance free. I avoid the use of Leylandii where possible as these can grow out of proportion and are unsightly when trimmed hard back. Trees: For those who need to add a tall screen to the garden without impacting on the boundaries, trees are a good option. I’m often asked for evergreen trees to screen neighbouring windows, belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk
but this poses a problem as many evergreen trees in the UK are either slow growing or will grow to be huge unmanageable specimens. I recommend well natured deciduous trees with a good branch structure such as Silver Birch instead. Pleached Specimens: These are trees grown on a tall single stem with the heads trained flat on to bamboo frames to give a living screen. These are particularly useful positioned in front of fences with the framework above. Deciduous and evergreen options are available. Hornbeam, Crabapple and Photinia are popular choices. They will need regular trimming and training to keep them in good shape, so good access is required and they are an expensive option due to the time spent training the trees so not for everyone. I hope I’ve given you some insight into the options available for screening, should you require more help, please get in touch via my website www.belgrierson. co.uk. The first RHS Chatsworth Flower Show will be held in June. I’ve been busy growing plants which will be used in the show gardens so I’ll be going along to see the fruit of my labours. Next month I’ll be reviewing the show and selecting my highlights from this prestigious event.

Latest News From Kitten Season Kitten Season is upon us and, just like those hot cakes in the bakery window, there is a stampede for kittens whenever they’re up for rehoming! But spare a thought for those cats who have been through kittenhood and have maturity and character on their side to offer potential owners! In 1989 I adopted 2 youngsters aged 6 and 9 months respectively. Over the years I had seen many visitors to our cattery looking for new feline friends and as they went along the corridor looking for potentials they’d often casually glance in the pods and walk on, deeming older cats as not for them. This has led to me to find out more. “Too old” mainly seems to refer to a cat over 6 months - which tends to mean customers are often looking for a kitten. Since then I’ve made a deliberate choice to take on those cats who have been overlooked on account of their age, and are therefore more difficult to rehome. There are many reasons why cats come into Woodside for rehoming but most are for reasons which genuinely are not the cat’s “fault”. If an older person dies and none of the family are able to take the cat in, Woodside is there to help. But we know the difficulties “older” cats pose. They tend to be nervous, even traumatised by their sudden change in circumstances so take longer to show off their talents and characters. These cats have often come from quiet homes with set routines so find the bright, clean and busy environment in the cattery bewildering despite our efforts to make their lives more comfortable. To date at home we’ve adopted 21 cats who have found their lives suddenly altered by owners needing to rehome them. We’ve also had dogs throughout this time and the cats have accepted this in their own ways. As I look around at our current household of 5 cats (and there’s Lottie our lurcher too!) we have a settled household. All of the cats have been introduced as adults and their ages range from 8 - 16 years. Our laps and sofas are usually taken as soon as we get to sit down and they all have their characters and foibles. What we are trying to say is do consider an “oldie”, which can range from just above kittenhood in some minds. Older cats usually have better road sense, are happier to be gathered in at teatime for the “nightly nosecount” and then be kept in overnight. As all our cats came from Woodside they have been health checked, neutered, fully vaxed, de-flead and wormed and our team of staff have assessed their characters and needs. At home we have joined the scheme at our vets which helps us to spread the finance involved in vaccination
boosters and regular de-fleaing and worming regimes; and gives us access to discounts on some tests for conditions which may affect adult cats - keeping them healthy is vital. We’ve invested in the plug-ins to help new felines settle and as they get used to our busy life they each acquire their favourite sleeping spots, activities and are able to demonstrate their characters. Adopting an adult cat is very rewarding and I urge all visitors looking for a feline recruit to take the time to look closely and consider all of the cats we have at Woodside. The benefits are huge and you definitely get your share of thanks and affection from an adult cat! And once settled they show you the kitten within!

Latest News From Charnwood Indoor Bowls Centre By Wendy Coley (Bowls Development Officer)
With all the current publicity about getting people more active and finding a sport in which everyone can participate I would like to tell you all about indoor bowls in Charnwood. But first a bit about our clubs history. We are situated in Browns Lane,Loughborough to the left hand side of the Leisure Centre. We are very proud that the club was officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales on Thursday 26th April 1990. Her picture takes pride of place on our club's lounge wall. Since then we have updated our facilities, including the lighting above the greens, and now have a superb 8 rink indoor bowls club as good as any in the Midlands. Indoor bowls is an enjoyable, rewarding sport that also offers great health benefits. It is a sociable activity for all ages from 10 to 100. As it is not dependent on strength or aerobic capacity it is a unique, multigenerational sport that men, women and children can enjoy playing together. Wheelchairs are available for disabled participants, as are aids for the visually impaired. How many other sports allow disabled people to play in the same team as the able bodied without any sporting disadvantage? Indoor bowls can be as social or competitive as participants require. We have purely social bowlers and also members who compete in county and national competitions. In April 2017 the Leicestershire
county indoor bowls finals were held at Charnwood Indoor Bowls club. There were many exciting matches and our club now boasts 4 county champions. For anyone interested in giving this superb sport a try we offer,by prior arrangement, a free initial session with coaching advice and bowls provided. You don't need any other equipment just wear comfortable clothes. For people who wish to continue there is free coaching every Sunday morning between 10am and 12 noon. If people wish to come on their own,or with a friend, to practice that is not a problem. However, there are also sessions on several days of the week where single bowlers can participate in bowls drives, where teams are allocated by picking a rink number. There are U3A groups,Women's Institutes and scouts amongst others who play regularly amongst themselves or in one of the many leagues or friendly matches that are organised by the club. We have a licensed bar in our lounge area and snacks are served in our sociable seating area. In fact our bacon cobs are legendary amongst other Leicestershire bowlers who visit the club to play in league matches! Shepshed & District Camera Club With a fairly late Easter this year the second half of the spring/ summer term for the members of Shepshed and District Camera Club was only five meetings long before the summer break started at Spring Bank Holiday weekend. Included among those meetings were an ‘in-house’ evening where members attempted to answer each other questions regarding editing photographs with various software packages and to finish the term an excellent photo tour by motorcycle of France and Northern Spain by Kevin Padmore who regularly visits different parts of France with his wife, both touring and camping with their motorcycles. The first meeting back after Easter was a presentation by the well known photographer from Milton Keynes Don Byatt, ARPS EFIAP MPAGB BPE5* called ‘There’s Nowt So Queer As Folk’ which was warmly received by all members present. Later in the month the results of an in-house challenge, where members used a rather old fashioned camera to take photos in the manner of pre-digital days, were announced and the winning
picture of an old Derbyshire Pumphouse by Fred Ing was declared the winner. Finally round 3 of the 2017 Competition League took place with the judge being the well known Natural History photographer from the Sileby Photographic Society Gianpiero Ferrari FRPS DPAGB MBPE. Gianpiero gave a good account of himself as he commented on all the entries in both classes and imparted quite a bit of his extensive knowledge with the natural history images in particular. The following were selected as the award winners: Prints - Nature/Animals 1st. Brian Walbey - Laetiporus Sulphureus - Chicken Of The Wood 2nd. Fred Ing 3rd. Garry Rennocks Projected Images - Open Subject 1st. Sue Hutton LRPS - Carnival Elegance 2nd. Brian Walbey 3rd. Fred Ing The club now takes its summer break and meetings start again on Tuesday, 12th September at the council Offices, Charnwood Road, Shepshed at 7.30pm for a 7.45pm start.

Your Borough Councillors can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough. We deal with housing problems, (such as you trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property and planning issues. Planning - Land off Hathern Road P/17/0686/2, P/17/0808/2, P/17/0812/2 and P/17/0813/2. Your Ward Cllrs raised concerns regarding the removal of hedges on this site, especially as it was during the bird breeding season and have now received the copy of the report by the Ecologist employed by Persimmon which we asked for. We have found that it was flawed in many areas following a site visit by Cllr. Bebbington and Cllr. Roy Campsall (Borough Cllr for Garendon) who saw ground nesting birds and door mice which had not been mentioned in the Ecologist report. We can assure Shepshed residents that Charnwood Officers were on site within hours of being made aware of Persimmon commencing work and talking to site managers and are keeping your Borough Councillors informed with regular updates, emails and meetings. Your Borough Councillors are keeping Shepshed Town Council informed at the same time. Following discussions that ALL Shepshed Borough Councillors have had with officers, Charnwood are reviewing the submissions for landscaping details (and other conditioned elements) to ensure that the concerns and proposed meaningful habitats are brought forward in the proposed landscaping and that the future management can also be delivered. We have been assured that officers are currently reviewing their responses to this application in light of a number of visits by the Council’s Ecologist and they will also consider any consultee comments and will continue to watch and monitor activity on the site to ensure that the site and development is managed and appropriately delivered. Your Ward Cllrs do their best in keeping an eye on planning in Shepshed and do appreciate the support of residents bringing to their attention concerns/issues they have during building works, which has been much in evidence with the above site. Charnwood Cabinet – at the Cabinet meeting held on 11th May it was agreed that the money remaining from the Shop
front improvements grants of £50,000, which was given by Charnwood but not all of it taken up by shop owners, the £32,000 remaining could be carried forward into the next financial year. Deciding on what this could be used for was discussed at the Town Centre Regeneration Team (meeting held after going to press). One possibility that it could be used to finance CCTV for the centre of Shepshed. British Legion – new drop-in British Legion sessions have commenced at the Borough Council Offices in Loughborough. Former and serving Armed Forces personnel and their families can get advice at a regular drop-in session hosted by Charnwood Borough Council and the Royal British Legion. An adviser from the Legion will be on hand at the council offices in Southfield Road every third Thursday of the month between 10am and midday. The first one was on May18th. Forces personnel, veterans and their families will be able to get advice on a range of issues including finance, grant support and pensions. Appointments are not required. Charnwood recently secured a £97,000 grant from the national Covenant Fund after leading a bid which also involved Melton and Rushcliffe Borough Councils. The grant will allow the Council to appoint a development worker a key part of the role will be to liaise with staff and personnel at the under-construction Stanford Hall Defence National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC) which is on the border of all three council areas. Charnwood has also supported Charnwood Armed Forces and Veterans’ Breakfast Club which meets on the second Saturday of every month at the Toby Carvery, Forest Road in Loughborough. For more information visit www. charnwood.gov.uk/armed_forces_ community for the breakfast events email victoria.coomber@talk21.com Due to the General election taking place on 8th June we are not allowed to hold our regular monthly surgery. Our next surgery will be at 10am on 1st July in the Town Council Offices in Charnwood Road, Shepshed. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who voted for me in the recent County Council election. Being your County Councillor for the past 8 years has been a privilege and I take my responsibilities and duties to help all Shepshed residents seriously. I cannot solve every problem I have been tasked with but will always try. I have been promoted and I am now what is known as a Cabinet Support member. This means that I am no longer spokesperson for Children and families and do not sit any longer on the Combined fire Authority, but I leave this Authority in a much better place as the fire Authority are recruiting additional fire fighters and the improvements at Shepshed Fire Station safe guards it for the future. I am still a trustee for Bradgate Park and the Thomas Harley Charity (see later details about this Charity) and represent County on a number of other committees, Glenmore Centre, Shepshed Volunteer Bureau, Shepshed Town Centre re-generation group and the Bernard Thorpe Charity. Thomas Harley Charity This Charity has supported a number of residents children in getting grants towards their University fees, books, accommodation etc., or if they are going on to college or do apprenticeships towards equipment, tools etc., Your family income must be below £36,000 to qualify for help. For further information contact me on the below number or via e mail. Road Junctions Charley Road/Iveshead Road Improvements are to be carried out at this junction which regularly has accidents. Tickow Lane/Belton St/Oakley Road/Hallamford Road – County have asked developers to re-look at the proposals for this junction which was down for 2 mini roundabouts. I had concerns about this proposal at the time and am pleased that it is being revisited. Town Centre Re-generation As County Councillor I sat in on a meeting with officers from County
and representatives from the Town Centre Re-generation Team which was looking at the viability of making some roads one-way and improvements to the Bull Ring. Nothing will be decided without going out to the wider public for their comments when schemes have been drawn up. Planning Land at Shepshed Quarry, Clay Pit and Landfill Site, Ashby Road, Shepshed – (2017/CM/0104/ LCC and 2017/VOCM/0103/ LCC) An application has been submitted to bring clay onto the site – at this site clay is used to make bricks – I have commented on the application asking that all the dykes surrounding the site are kept clear and have written in supporting residents who have corresponded to County with their concerns. I am in agreement with the timings of the HGV movements, which will not take place at peak times. Persimmon development Hathern Road – I have raised concerns as the County Councillor regarding the removal of the bushes/trees on this site as it has made the sides of the brook start collapse and the pavement and road cracking. This is being investigated by County highway officers. Footpath – L11 Brick Kiln Lane/ Jolly Farmers This footpath is due to reopen on 1st June following the development going on in this area. Concerns have been raised about how long it has been closed and that an area of land adjoining it, unless closed off will allow vehicles to enter the estate via this route. As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc. Due to the forthcoming Parliamentary elections on 8th June and purdah there will be no surgery until 1st July, but for help and advice on County matters, I can still be contacted.

Shepshed Town Council Labour Group Report
The Rt Hon
NICKY MORGAN T: 01509 262723
There are some news items which really make us stop, put our lives and worries into perspective and then hug family members and loved ones particularly close that day. The terror attack in Manchester is one such event. The fact that such senseless carnage and terror can happen at a pop concert when so many children and young people were having a great evening makes the attack even more painful. I know every reader’s thoughts and prayers will be with the victims, their families and friends and with the fantastic emergency services personnel and hospital staff who responded so professionally. I know, particularly at this time of year, there are often many queries about the cutting of the grass verges across Loughborough. As I write this article the County Council is working on the second cut of the season. Shepshed’s vergest are due to be cut right at the end of May and very early in June. By checking on www.leicestershire.gov.uk/roadsand-travel/road-maintenance/ grass-cutting it is possible to check the list of areas for which the County Council has responsibility for cutting the grass verges and the likely date of the next cut. There is also an interactive map to check who has responsibility for cutting the grass on that particular piece of land and whether a problem you might have spotted has been reported. If the length of the grass is causing

a safety issue then the problem can be reported to Leicestershire County Council online. I am delighted to hear about the refurbishment of Hind Leys swimming pool. Many congratulations to everyone involved and I hope the pool is well supported by Shepshed folk and continues to serve the town for many years. Back in 2012 Loughborough station was significantly improved in preparation for the town’s involvement in the Olympics. The work included a major expansion of the station car park. It has become clear though that in spite of that expansion more parking spaces are needed. It is often the case now that those travelling mid-week have to squeeze into impractical spaces or park on the kerbs. I raised this sometime ago with both Network Rail and East Midlands Trains and I’m delighted to say that both companies acknowledged the problem and have worked together to find a solution. The new car parking spaces will be located in an additional car park facility to the left hand side of the current entrance, on a piece of land that is currently unused by Network Rail. Network Rail has worked with East Midlands Trains on the development of the plans that will see the extra 50 spaces opened in late summer. The additional car park will have CCTV and lighting.

As the controlling group, Shepshed Labour Party Councillors would like to take this opportunity to thank all local residents who supported our Candidate, Claire Poole, in the recent County Council Elections. This time we were not successful but we did poll over 1,000 votes at this election. We will continue to report our resident’s concerns to the elected County Councillor, Christine Radford. We had many issues raised on the doorstep during the campaign, local residents of all political persuasions were unhappy with the lack of investment in Shepshed regarding road repairs that are so neglected by the County Council. Many people were unhappy with the street lighting that has been changed to LED and in some areas is very dark. Concerns were also raised about street parking in many areas of Shepshed. Local residents, with the help of Cllr. Claire Poole, were able to gather around 100 signatures to a petition to improve the community bus service by Paul Winson and Leicestershire County Council. Alterations to the service mean that many elderly and residents to the north of Shepshed have a poor bus service. Claire will update when she has further information. Cllr. Jane Lennie is on the Community Bus Partnership group and will be happy to represent resident’s views at their regular meetings. Shepshed Labour Group can assure our local residents that we will be requesting Christine Radford, the Conservative County Councillor, to get proper services for Shepshed and we will expect her full support in working to support our local town and residents at County Hall. We have had many complaints from local residents concerning the hedge removal at the Hathern Road development. We were shocked to discover that the works were carried out without permission of the planning authority at Charnwood Borough Council. Cllr. Jane Lennie has reported this hedge removal to the local police due to the nesting birds, and has contacted the Conservative Borough Councillors including Bill Bebbington, who is currently on Planning for Shepshed, to represent our local residents to stop this type of breach of planning regulations happening in the future. Shepshed Town Council has responded robustly on behalf of our local residents over this matter and we would urge local residents to get directly in touch with the Conservative Councillor Bill Bebbington and also the local planning authority Charnwood Borough Council. Jane Lennie will continue to monitor the situation at this site and will update local residents when she has more information. Starting from next month we will be highlighting one of your Shepshed Local Town Councillors to explain what role they carry out on Shepshed Town Council and what part they play in our local community. Shepshed Labour Councillors Hold monthly surgeries at the Town Council office the second Saturday each month, and now the weather is starting to get warmer we will be doing revolving street surgeries on the same morning, areas to be notified in our monthly updates.
