Shepshed History Society Tuesday 13th February Shepshed History Society enjoyed a fascinating and very enjoyable evening trying to identify artefacts from times gone by when Mr and Mrs Bob Neill brought along very mysterious gadgets that our forebears would have used. Bob is a popular presenter that has been many times before to the society and he still never fails to mystify the members as they struggle to say what the gadgets were called and what they were used for. One of the most intriguing items was a cherry stone remover and a port wine and stilton cheese scoop. A wooden shaft with knobs on the end of it proved to be a glove darning implement and a very complex tin opener proved to be quite difficult to fathom out. Finally a prize was awarded to the winning group and a good night entertainment was had by all. Next months speaker is to be Mr Peter Liddle, and the subject to be the Hallaton Treasure. Please feel free to join us.

Fraud & Cyber Prevention Conference Although fraud and online crime are not new, sadly over recent weeks we have had an increase in reports of fraud affecting older and vulnerable residents of Leicestershire. To that end, to raise awareness and help protect our community, Leicestershire Police are holding a FREE Fraud Protection Conference at Police Headquarters, on Friday 23rd March. Who is the event aimed at? Anyone who has been a victim of fraud or cybercrime Anyone who is concerned about fraud and cybercrime, who would like to learn more in order to protect themselves and their families Anybody who works or volunteers with elderly or vulnerable communities who could help us raise awareness of the most common issues and spread best practice advice What will it entail? Presentations and guidance on fraud, scams and how to stay safe online from our Fraud Unit, Cyber Protect Officer, and GetSafeOnline Prevention advice from Leicestershire Trading Standards on doorstep crime, scam mail, and dealing with cold callers Advice and information from a number of organisations such as Age Concern, companies offering Call Blocking technology, and GetSafeOnline amongst others When is it? Friday 23rd March from 10am to 3pm, with buffet lunch included I’m interested, what do I need to do? If you would like to join us, please email FVO@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk or telephone 0116 248 5322 to reserve place(s) – cut-off date Friday 16th March. There is no charge for this event.

plus, by popular demand, a brand new evening class is starting at the Gorse Covert Community

Centre in Loughborough (next to Morrisons supermarket).

Instructor, Linda Davies, told us that the new class is aimed at

those with little or no experience of dancing of any kind or those who have not danced for a

while and want to come back to it. Having run classes for 9

years in the Loughborough and

Nottingham areas she recognises

some people find existing classes

too difficult and need to start with absolute basics.

She told us, the emphasis at

my classes is fun and it doesn’t

matter if you go wrong because everyone goes wrong at some

point, including me!.I start with gradually add new steps each

week. People are amazed at how

Shepshed Women’s Institute met in February and enjoyed a talk by Anne Halsey about a trip to Sri Lanka. She explained that she went just a short while before the tsunami which devastated so many countries and there were some parts that they were unable to visit because of unrest in the country. She was, however, able to visit an elephant rescue centre and a tea plantation.

All meetings are held at Christchurch Methodist Church, Field Street, Shepshed, at 7.30 pm on the first Thursday of the month and visitors are always made very welcome.

Shepshed & District Camera Club The members of Shepshed and District Camera Club returned from the Christmas break to a busy programme of meetings in January and February beginning with the annual quiz, a light hearted evening (!) this year presented by Brian Walbey. A couple of practical evenings followed with Stop Motion Photography and Print Mounting being the two subjects demonstrated by Club members and practised by those who attended. The main event in January was a presentation held at Shepshed Bowls Club, which was also open to the general public, at which Jack Perks, a professional wildlife photographer from the Nottingham area, presented his talk entitled “Rivers: Source to Sea” and which included a fine set of images together with a very informative and at times humorous commentary which greatly entertained the sixty or so people who attended. The first round of the 2018 Competition League also took place in January, the themed subject, this time for prints, being “Creative” and the projected image class was for Open subjects, the judge on this occasion being Hazel Manning, LRPS BPE3*, and this was in fact her penultimate judging session after many years of judging at local clubs. After reviewing each image Hazel made the following awards:

Shepshed Dynamo Youth & Junior Shepshed Dynamo Youth and Junior are forging on with the season although the recent wet / snow weather has curtailed events. We currently have teams playing in various Leicestershire Leagues ranging from Under 8’s to Under 17’s. A big thanks go to Dave Freestone who has managed the Under 17’s through to their last season with us. The players will be off playing men’s football next season and we wish them well. At the other end of the spectrum, we have an Under 8’s team playing league football for the first season. They have been promoted a League since the start of the season which all bodes well for the future. Junior and Youth football now play 5v5, 7v7, 9v9 and eventually 11v11. So year on year we need to recruit new players to fulfil our commitments to the Leagues. Any new players please contact the writer. We need some help in starting an Under 8’s team for next season. Are there any parents/guardians willing to give us a hand to train the players? Full back up and help available including FA coaching courses. Our Annual Shepshed 7’s football tournament will be held on the 12th May 2018 at the Dovecote Stadium. Please come along and support our players and see the best in the County. 9am start. Any questions or help, please ring Mick on 07801 691712

Latest News From... The Benefits Of The Human-Animal Bond Around the same time as I adopted my first three cats from Woodside in 2002, a visit to my doctor had resulted in a raised blood pressure diagnosis. After a month with my cats my blood pressure had returned to normal without medication. When the doctor said my cats were the reason for the improvement I thought he was joking. However it is now widely accepted that having a pet has a beneficial effect on a number of health issues. Dog owners obviously benefit from regularly walking their pets and probably walk more than the average person. Walking can reduce a number of minor health problems. Older dog walkers are twice as likely to maintain good mobility compared to those who lead a sedentary lifestyle. Not only are the majority of pet owners less likely to have high blood pressure but also a reduction in cholesterol. As well as improved health, pet owners display more contentment with life in general. Research has shown that having a pet improves the survival rate after a heart attack; pets can help to alleviate depression and loneliness and ease the sadness of bereavement. Surveys in several countries indicated that pet owners make significantly fewer visits to doctors. Childhood exposure to pets has been shown to have a protective effect against later developing allergies and asthma. Companion animals can also help children psychologically when they seek out their pets for comfort and support when they are upset or distressed. Animals can be an unbiased confidant and help overcome a child’s emotional problems. Autistic children are able to interact and communicate with their pets when being withdrawn from human company. Such interactions can help to promote their ability to socialise with humans. One of the most significant senses dogs possess is their sense of smell, or olfactory receptors. Humans have approximately five million of these receptors; cats, between forty-five and eighty million; the average dog has between a hundred-and-fifty to a massive three hundred million! Dogs can detect some odours in parts per trillion and distinguish between countless subtleties in scents. This amazing ability is not only used in search and rescue missions, to detect drugs and weapons and other contraband materials, but also to help in the diagnosis of human illnesses or warn patients of impending health problems.

hypoglycaemia attack (low blood sugar). They can also sense the onset of a narcoleptic episode and help prevent injury.

Dogs have the ability to hone in on the scent of serotonin, a chemical

in the body that skyrockets when a person is about to have a migraine attack, enabling sufferers to take preventative medication. Recent

research has discovered that dogs can ‘sniff out’ Alzheimer’s disease by detecting odour changes in urine samples. The ability of dogs to smell the surge of hormones humans release when responding to stressful situations, means that they can literally smell fear and stress.

Cats purr for all sorts of reasons. Purring lowers a cat’s heart rate and

helps them relax. Purr vibrations are known to be medically therapeutic for many human illnesses. As well as lowering stress, anxiety, blood pressure and reducing the risk of a heart attack by 40%, purrs of

particular frequencies have been shown to heal bones and swelling. The vibrations are also helpful for healing soft tissue, muscle, tendon and ligament injuries.

An old veterinary proverb says “If you put a cat and a bunch of broken bones in the same room, the bones will heal”.

Most people are familiar with the important role guide dogs fulfil for their blind companions. Trained dogs also assist deaf people to live

independently and make a huge difference to the lives of those who suffer with a variety of physical or psychological problems.

Therapy dogs and cats in hospitals have a positive effect on a patient’s pain level and have resulted in significant improvements in mood and motivation. Patients are more likely to want to “get better” and stay optimistic through regular contact with therapy animals.

There was, however, one cat people would rather not encounter. His

name was Oscar and he lived on Rhode Island in the US in a geriatric clinic where he was able to accurately predict the deaths of patients!

There are numerous reasons why we have pets. They can be an antidote for loneliness, loving companions, improve motivation, lessen anxiety

and worry as well as assist with particular medical conditions. Our pets

Dogs have demonstrated an ability to detect tiny changes in human hormones which has alerted physicians to cancer in patients. In tests dogs have sniffed out skin, lung and bladder cancer.

Growing Tasty Herbs

Chive

New shoots emerging, snowdrops and daffodils brightening the borders and the birds tweeting in the trees– Spring must be here at last Hooray! With the longer days and lighter nights I’m eager to step into my garden as often as I can. My seed packets are at the ready and my secateurs sharpened! One of the first task is to assess my herb patch to see what needs trimming back or renewing and deciding what to add for this season. I love to cook & popping out and pick something to flavour a casserole, curry or sauce is a real treat. I tend to use the hardy evergreen herbs like Rosemary & Sage in the winter months & the softer perennial & tender herbs like Basil, Mint and Coriander in the spring & summer.

Mint

Sage

Many of the culinary herbs we use come from warmer climes so they need some loving care if they are going to survive and thrive in our cooler and wetter environment. Most like a sunny spot with free draining soil. I added some horticultural grit to my clay-loam soil when I first prepared the patch to help rain water drain through and avoid root rot. Growing in terracotta pots can also be very

successful as they naturally drain well and can be filled with suitable free draining compost too. Shrubby Herbs - e.g. Bay, Rosemary, Sage & Thyme. These I grow in containers so I can control their growth and give them really free draining soil. I tend to grow a Rosemary & Sage plant for about 3-4 years until it gets really woody then I start again with a fresh plant. These bushy herbs are perfect for slow cooked dishes like stews and roasted vegetables. Hardy Perennial Herbs - Chives, Mint, Tarragon & Oregano for example will happily reappear each spring and provide handfuls of tasty soft leaves through until autumn. These are the herbs I use to flavour a dish towards the end of cooking to give a fresh zingy lift to the dish. They grow happily in my heavy soil, with a trim back & a handful of fertiliser in spring. Every few years a lift and split them during spring, dividing them with a spade & replanting the fresh vigorous pieces. Hardy Annual Herbs - Coriander, Rocket & Parsley are sown from seed in pots during the spring (or bought ready grown) & can then be planted in the herb bed belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk

alongside the perennials as long as they have a drink occasionally in the hottest summer months. Although Parsley is actually a perennial I tend to start with new plants each year as they are prone to going to seed in their second year. With their tender leaves these annual herbs are best raw or added just before serving to preserve their flavour. Tender Herbs Basil is wonderful with its hit of aniseed and is delicious with pasta or salad. I grow this from seed alongside my tomatoes in the green house so that it benefits from the heat of the greenhouse. Lemon verbena is a slightly tender shrubby herb which smells amazing. The intense lemony fragrance is wonderful in a summer punch with strawberries. I grow it in a terracotta pot on the patio and then move the pot in to the greenhouse for the winter. So as soon as the rain stops & I can venture into my garden, the herb patch will be my first port of call. Next month I’ll be looking at Alpine plants and how to use them for a spring splash of colour.

Shepshed Swimming Club Shepshed Swimming club is looking for new members to join our team, so if you enjoy swimming then why not come down for a free trial session with us. The club was first established in 1972 and is based at Iveshead (Hind Leys) school pool. We offer training session for swimmers alongside the chance to take part in competitions throughout the year. We also enjoy an active social side to the club, and ended our 2017 season with an amazing Christmas party, which was full of games, food, disco and even a visit from Santa! We swim competitively in galas and offer our swimmers chances to swim in both team and individual events. To us as a club making sure our swimmers are enjoying themselves and are able to achieve their own personal best times and results is as important as where the club is ranked in the league tables. Our swimmers enjoy a good sense of camaraderie which extends well beyond the pool and they can be heard cheering each other on at the galas! The club is 46 years old this year and we are keen to make sure that we carry on being able to build on the successes we have seen. We are currently short of swimmers in a range of age groups and are looking to take on lots of new members this year to further boost our team. We train on Monday, Thursday & Friday nights and all our training session are based in Shepshed. We are looking for new members from 6 to 16 years although all swimmers must be able to swim lengths. The clubs training sessions are great for swimmers who are in the latter stages of swimming lessons or have finished the learn to swim criteria. Our sessions cover everything from refining a swimmers technique to race turns and diving from starting blocks. As well as helping young people to continue to enjoy swimming, an achieve & healthy lifestyle, establish new friendship groups outside of school and offering to teach our older swimmers to become coaches. Do you enjoy swimming? Would you enjoy socialising and making new friends in a club atmosphere? Are you competitive and enjoy racing? If you or your children answered yes to all or any of the questions above please check out our website: www. shepshedswimmingclub.com and book your free trials session today?

Shepshed Probus Club The meeting was opened by our President Mr Pat Harris and he introduced our in-house speaker Steve Bodycote who spoke about Royal Naval customs and laws. Our secretary Will Shelton read out the notices and Stan related his funny stories and prayers were said before everyone sat down to a 4 course lunch after which a raffle was drawn which was won by 2 committee members. The President then introduced the speaker who created a kerfuffle trying to get onto the stage having undergone knee surgery and his new knee wouldn't bend properly. However after being pushed and shoved by other club members Steve was able to sit down and deliver his talk. Like all organisations, the Royal Navy is regulated by rules, regulations and customs. Steve introduced the Bosuns Call (a whistle). In the days of sail the "call" passed on lots of orders by the way it was blown. In today's modern Navy where tannoy systems are fitted throughout the ship, the call is used to alert the crew that a verbal message is about to follow. Some signals piped over the tannoy don't need verbal explanations, the time and form of the call telling the crew that it's lunchtime, supper time, bedtime or reveille. The call is also used to announce the arrival on board ship of a senior officer or dignitary and also to announce the arrival of an officer doing his ship's inspection rounds. The call is worn round the neck on a chain and it was considered quite an honour to be awarded the title of Bosun's Mate. Steve next spoke about different uniforms worn by the sailors. During the working day the uniform is a form of lightweight denim but at night when ashore it is normal to wear civilian clothes. On board, unless the ship was in port and going ashore, the sailors would wear a white shirt and black woollen trousers. Altogether there are up to 12 different uniforms including tropical kit. Something that has to be dealt with in the Royal Navy, as in the other Services, is discipline. In this country discipline can be dispensed by British Police. When a ship is out of the country, the ship can carry out its disciplinary procedures, except for the most serious cases when a Court Marshal would be necessary. Punishments have changed now. Hanging, flogging, lashes and keel-hauling cannot be prescribed now, they are all against Human Rights. If the case is so serious that a Court Marshal is required, the suspect would be held on board ship until such time that the court could be convened. After the talk the Chairman thanked Steve and the members showed their appreciation. The Chairman reminded everyone that the next meeting would be the AGM to be held on Monday 5th March at 12.30pm and anyone can be assured of a warm welcome amidst good company and enjoy a pleasant meal. Please contact our secretary Will on 01509 719802 for further information.

T: 01509 262723 E: nicky.morgan.mp@parliament.uk I recently had the pleasure of visiting two successful and long-standing Shepshed businesses. It was exciting to hear about the growth plans of Meggitt PLC and to walk around the site and meet a number of different employees. I was impressed by their calm diligence and pride in their work, the new investment being made and the absolute commitment to setting and maintaining very high standards. Meggitt are looking to recruit new employees and would be interested to hear from people who think they might offer the next step in their career. Urgo Medical is a fascinating business producing bandages and working on how the NHS can help to provide better care for wounds which enables faster recovery times. They are investing heavily in their site in Sullington Road and it was good to have a tour there and say hello to many of the people working there. Urgo management are aware of some of the highways issues which result from having a successful factory surrounded by housing and so I’m in discussion with some of the neighbours and County Council Highways about this. Life in Westminster continues to be very busy, particularly as Chair of the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee. We hold two public evidence sessions a week including regular sessions with the Bank of England, Treasury Ministers and the Financial Conduct Authority. We are also holding inquiries into matters such as household finances, women in finance, student loans, cryptocurrencies, the UK’s economic relationship with the EU and small business funding. I also recently attended a debate in our second chamber, Westminster Hall, about myalgic encephalomyelitis (sometimes called chronic fatigue syndrome). This was a short debate specifically to look at something called the PACE trial which conducted research into treatment for ME. There is now significant criticism of this trial and the treatments it recommended. About 200,000 people in the UK suffer from ME which is an incredibly debilitating condition. The chances are that at least one, and probably more, Shepshed Eye readers will be sufferers or know someone who is. Because we only had time allocated for a short debate there were many MPs who couldn’t speak on behalf of their constituents and so we intend to ask for a long and more detailed debate. If you have any experiences you’d like me to know about before the debate please do get in touch.

Stunning Showhomes Unveiled In Shepshed House hunters searching for their ideal new home in the north Leicestershire town of Shepshed will be pleased to discover that two brand new showhomes have opened at Buttercup Fields, the latest development from 5 star housebuilder, William Davis Homes. Featuring a contemporary collection of two to four bedroom family homes in over 15 different designs, Buttercup Fields is located on the edge of the town, with stunning views across the Leicestershire countryside. Unveiled recently, the two new showhomes are four bedroom, detached properties, known as the Denwick and Solent, and have been designed to showcase the quality finishes, top brand appliances and smart home technology that create a William Davis home. With bespoke interiors designed and furnished by Edward Thomas Interiors, the Denwick and the Solent feature contrasting décor to offer plenty of inspiration for house hunters. “The Denwick and Solent are large, spacious properties with flexible layouts and have been a pleasure to furnish and dress,” explains Edward Thomas Interiors’ managing director, Andy Richardson. “In the Denwick, the design is art deco in style, with marbling and metallics complimented by a pastel colour palette of lilac and grey to provide a modern relevance. By contrast, the Solent has a brighter, more relaxed interior with accent colours of ochre and turquoise alongside furniture to reflect modern living trends. To highlight the town’s connection to sporting pedigree, we’ve also themed some of the rooms with rowing and rock climbing accessories, including statement wallpaper. Not to be missed are the specially commissioned, hand-painted murals in the children’s bedrooms; one featuring the iconic Paddington bear and the other filled with buttercups in tribute to the development’s name!” The Denwick and Solent form part of the bespoke sales complex at Buttercup Fields, which is framed by a large oak tree that William Davis Homes has retained as a feature for the development. In addition to viewing the two new showhomes, potential purchasers can also spend time in the beautifully landscaped gardens, dedicated sales centre or options suite, where they can choose how to personalise their new home in a private and peaceful environment. Stephen Rush, sales director at William Davis Homes said: “Feedback on the new showhomes has been really positive, with many house hunters telling us that they could move in straight away! The Paddington room in the Denwick has been a standout feature and the spacious lounge in the Solent, ideal for both family life and entertaining, has been a pleasant surprise for purchasers. With sales off to a strong start, and purchasers already telling us how much they admire the development’s rural location, we’re encouraging house hunters to visit and see for themselves why Buttercup Fields is the best address in Shepshed.”

County Councillor

Christine Radford

T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc. Shepshed Library I wish to give you advance notice of a short planned closure to Shepshed library. The Library Service will be replacing the selfservice kiosks across all of the 16 council run libraries throughout March and this will involve closing most libraries for one or two days. The planned closure for Shepshed library is Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th March (this includes the usual closed day on Wednesdays). This date may be subject to change should they encounter any issues with the installation rollout, but I will try to keep you informed if this is the case. Launch of Consultation on School Term Dates 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22 I wish to inform residents about the launch of a public consultation on school term dates. Option 1 - Leicestershire traditional term time – stay as we are. Option 2 - City term time pattern – Half term in October one week later than now. Option 3 - Autumn half term and spring half term later by one week. All interested parties will be able to make their views known by clicking on the following link: www.leicestershire.gov.uk/termtime-consultation The consultation runs from 5th February 2018 to 2 April 2018. Paper copies of the consultation document and questionnaire are available by calling 0116 305 2070. The Introduction Of Average Speed Camera Pilots The introduction of Average Speed Camera Pilots is being undertaken with the cooperation of the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Road Safety Partnership. The procurement process for the purchase of average speed cameras is anticipated to be complete in October. A50 Bradgate Hill Groby, B676 Saxby Road, Freeby, Burton Road, Measham, A6 Harborough Road and Glen Road, Oadby, B4114 Leicester Road, Sharnford, A4304 Lutterworth Road, Walcote and Beacon Road, Woodhouse Eaves.

The signage work at the seven pilot sites is being put in place. School Crossing Patrol Conference I attended the above Conference held at County Hall. The amount of training and briefings that they are given to help them keep our children safe whilst they cross the road was enlightening. I was privileged to hand out long service awards some had given 25, 30, 35 and even 40 years’ service. I am pleased to report that the 2 vacancies in Shepshed have been filled. Strategic Growth Plan You may not be aware that the nine local authorities in Leicester and Leicestershire, together with the Local Enterprise Partnership are preparing a Strategic Growth Plan.

Charnwood Day Nursery Supported Safer Internet Day Charnwood Day Nursery was lending its support to the global Safer Internet Day campaign on Tuesday 6th February. Coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre, Safer Internet Day is celebrated in over 100 countries. It saw Charnwood Day Nursery

The first stage in the preparation of the Plan was the Strategic Growth Statement which was published in August 2016. This was a high level document which explained why the Plan is being prepared, provided a pen portrait of the area, set out some overall objectives and described the types of options that we would be considering when planning for growth.

Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess etc, without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or e mail christine_ radford@hotmail.com or christine. radford@leics.gov.uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road 10-11am.

‘be the change’ and help create a better internet, by committing to communicating as far and wide as possible, relevant messages to ensure children are safer online. Charnwood sends Internet Safety Packs featuring lots of different information and leaflets to all their families and carers. The packs also form part of any induction paperwork for potential new families and about using computers and the internet and shared online safety resource. Together the staff and children read the book ‘Chicken Clicking’, a story about a chicken who uses the internet to buy gifts for her friends but then decides to make a friend online, and ends up in a tricky situation. The children were all very responsive to the story and it sparked lots of discussion about what the internet should be used for, home and the games they play on them. Natasha Hyslop, Nursery Manager, said: “Internet safety is embedded in activities we do every day and staff work with the children to give them an understanding that the internet is a powerful tool with a wealth of information to support learning, but also to gain insight that not everything online is real and it is an additional resource to the ‘real world’. Our aim is not just to reach out to our children and families that attend our nurseries about the safe use of the internet, but further; our staff teams, our own extended families and network of friends who may have children of all ages right up to 18-year olds. The activities that we have put in place lay the foundations for later on in our children’s lives and more so with the use of social media.” For further information about Charnwood please visit the website at www.charnwooddaynursey.com Like us on Facebook www.facebook.com/CharnwoodDayNursery Or call us on 01509 508 012.

Borough Councillor

Christine Radford

T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com We can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough Council. We deal with housing problems, (such as trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, AntiSocial Behaviour, whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property. We also deal with planning issues. Planning – Land To The Rear of 62 Iveshead Road – APP/ X2410/W/17/3184008 We now have the appeal date. The hearing will start at 10am on Tuesday 13th March and take place in the Charnwood Borough Council offices. Cllr Bebbington will be speaking as Ward Councillor, Cllr Tassell is speaking on behalf of the residents in Iveshead Road and we understand that a Cllr from the Shepshed Town Council will also be speaking at the appeal. Outline planning has already been given; this cannot be overturned, but we are speaking against the proposed layout of the site, types of properties, such as 2 ½ storey in an elevated area of Shepshed and the type of properties proposed behind bungalows on Iveshead Road. This application has been a very difficult one due to the fact that the developer keeps putting in amended plans. We will keep you informed when the decision is made public which could be some months after the appeal. Planning – 64-66 Brick Kiln Lane – P/17/2066/2 – Erection Of One Dwelling An appeal has been made to the Secretary of State against the decision of Charnwood Borough Council, to refuse planning permission for the above development. The appeal will be determined on the basis of written representations. The address for the search page is www.gov.uk/appeal-planninginspectorate or you can email: north2@pins.gsi.gov.uk. Planning – Old Stables – Oakley Road We are receiving a large number of complaints regarding the HGV’s delivering to this site. Such as parking, driving over grass verges, mud on the road etc. We are in constant contact with County and the Planning Department at Charnwood raising our and your concerns. BUT please continue to keep us informed about issues you have. Charnwood Lifeline Charnwood’s Lifeline provides invaluable support for their customers and their families and gives reassurance that help is

available if it is needed.

Enthralling Tales And Easter Trail At Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation Registered charity Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation, who provides support, care and friendship wellbeing services will hosting a fun woodland themed trail this Easter.

These new Lifeline has proved its weight in gold for a Shepshed man and his family.

Helen Baxter Activities coordinator at the Foundation explained ‘We would be delighted to welcome you on Tuesday 27th March. To begin join Tom the Tale Teller in the yurt and enjoy his inspiring tales of magic and adventure. Tom is an experienced storyteller, enthralling children of all ages with his imaginative, engaging and thrilling stories’ She added ‘after enjoying tales in the yurt collect your map and follow the trail through the Yew Trail woodland, spotting a few woodland animals along the way! Collect the stickers and finish the trail with an Easter chocolate treat!’

Charnwood Lifeline is available to anyone living in the borough. All you need is a phone line and an electrical socket nearby.

Sessions take place on Tuesday 27th March - 10.30am , 11.00am and 11.30am! at The Yurt, Ulverscroft Manor, Priory Lane, Ulverscroft, Leicestershire, LE67 9PH.

Charnwood are looking at how the service can provide additional support and their new fall detectors are the first step.

The personal alarm costs £205.20 per year, which is just £4 per week and a one-off installation cost of £30. The fall detector costs an additional £7 per quarter. For more information call 643970. Community Governance Review At the meeting of the Full Council on 22nd January there was a proposal to increase the number of Shepshed Town Councillors from 15 to 20 and further analysis be undertaken to determine the required split of town councillors between the two wards which make up the town. The Reason was to bring the ratio of electors per town councillor to a more comparable level with other similar sized local councils within the Borough and to reflect the significant projected increase in the electorate of Shepshed over the next five years. Shepshed Town Council had already discussed and voted on it, the recommendation was unanimous in staying as they were. Therefore Cllr Bebbington had not hesitation in proposing that there was no increase in the number of Councillors and it was seconded by Cllr Radford, the reason being that this would be an extra cost to the residents of Shepshed. This proposal was carried; therefore there will be no increase in the number of Councillors. On Going Issues Planning and Anti-Social behaviour (majority of it confidential) is still taking up a large amount of our time. Do not hesitate to contact us should you have issues you wish to discuss with us. We shall continue to hold our regular monthly surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council offices, Charnwood Road, from 10-11am. No appointments are necessary. Bill Bebbington, Christine Radford, John Savage and Joan Tassell. 502974, 506661, 769707,or email christine_radford@hotmail.com cllr.joan.tassell@charnwood.gov.uk cllr.christine.radford@charnwood.gov.uk cllr.bill.bebbington@charnwood.gov.uk cllr.john.savage@charnwood.gov.uk

Booking is essential - Tickets £3.50 per child to include woodland trail map, tales with Tom in the Yurt and a small Easter treat. Please be advised that booking for the sessions is essential and chosen session time is required at the time of booking. The woodland trail may not be suitable for pushchairs in places. Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders Seven members of Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders celebrated St. Valentines Day, but with a difference this year. They

attended Loughborough University to help them fulfil an ambitious

target of training 1300 students, staff and members of the public in how to recognise cardiac arrest and deliver early, effective Cardio Pulmonary

Resuscitation (CPR) in order to increase the number of people surviving a sudden cardiac arrest outside of the hospital environment.

At the end of the event, which ran between 8am and 8pm, a massive total of 1476 were trained. It was a great day and a great result. The CFR team were delighted to have been able to help achieve this magnificent result.

As reported previously on the 8th November 2017, 2 members of the

Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders gave a presentation

to the Leicestershire Morris Minor Owners Club on how to deliver early, effective CPR to a patient who has had a sudden cardiac arrest and use a defibrillator. To demonstrate the effectiveness of these events, one

of the ladies who was present at the demonstration was confronted by a distressed neighbour early in January 2018, who explained that her

husband had just collapsed at home. The lady immediately went round to the neighbours address and found that the patient was unconscious and not breathing. She immediately started CPR on the man and

continued to do so until the arrival of the Ambulance Service. The man survived the cardiac arrest and is recovering, but the Ambulance crew

said that without the early CPR the outcome for the patient could easily

have been very different. The lady said that if the incident had occurred before she attended the demonstration she would not have become

involved, as she did not know what to do. She added that she had the knowledge and confidence to deliver the CPR because she had been shown how to do it. Well done, madam!

Following on from the last article Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders are keen to give demonstrations on how to administer CPR and use a defibrillator. If you are part of a community group, club or

association, or a member of the public, and you would like to arrange a demonstration please contact scheme coordinator Lion President Bob Lilley on 01509 508265 or by e-mail at thelilleys15@gmail.com

The demonstrations are free of charge, but we do invite you to make a donation to our funds to enable us to buy up to date equipment.
