Shepshed Probus Club

Shepshed History Society

The President Pat Harris beginning his first year in office welcomed members and our speaker to the April meeting of The Probus Club of Shepshed. After the apologies for absence and the routine business had been conducted two new members were given full membership and honorary membership was granted to one of our longserving members who joined us in 1992.

A very entertaining talk was given to the Shepshed History Society on the 11th April by Mel Wilson who gave a very informative and amusing account of how public bathing progressed from the 1700's when it was normal practice to bathe in the nude. Quite a few risque tales were recorded over the years and one tale in particular relates how a noted aristocratic gentleman used to heave his friends onto his shoulders in order for them to peep through a window in order to view his wife and other females as they bathed with nothing on.

After lunch and the raffle draw our speaker Tim Oaten introduced his talk “Modern Day Piracy”. This turned out to be an unusual talk insofar as it was given by an ex-royal navy officer on a subject most people have heard of but know very little about. Pirates carried out robbery at sea with incidents occurring from 2008 to 2012 on over 900 occasions. Due to international co-ordination from 2013 to 2016 the drop in piracy at sea has been dramatic. Instances were given of Somali pirates operating with little resources capturing and holding to ransom crew and cargo of merchant shipping worth millions of dollars. Some military intervention has been possible but areas of two million square miles of ocean are difficult to cover. The speaker gave some detailed information of piracy at sea in general with some specific reported incidents. An interested audience gave warm applause at the conclusion of the talk. New members are welcome – contact the Secretary on 01509 769802

Citizens Advice Charnwood Possibly One Of Loughborough’s Best Kept Secrets Most people have heard about Citizens Advice Bureaux, but are we aware of what they do? Operations Manager, Paula Tobin, of Citizens Advice Charnwood (the new name) welcomed Shepshed Charnwood Rotarian Paul Miles to thank the club for their recent charity donation. Yes, surprise number one: it is a charity and, though supported by Charnwood Borough Council and Leicestershire County Council, it does depend heavily on receiving funding from public donations. Formed in the 1940s the bureau is busier now than at any other time in its history. There are eight paid staff but the bulk of the work is carried out by over forty advisors who volunteer their time to help others. They are at the heart of the service offered and receive full training in the skills required

to help people with their many problems. The advisors won’t tell clients what to do but, by using their training, will explain what options are available. They are also helped by the information on their comprehensive data base. Surprise two: the advice they give is completely free. The target is to help people with whatever problems they may face without them worrying about costs. The advice given is also confidential and, most importantly, unbiased. Visiting the CAB should not be a last resort, more of a first stop in obtaining help and solid advice. Surprise number three: as well as receiving nearly two hundred phone calls, over 450 clients pass through their doors each month, a surprising number of people needing their help. The Rotary club is very pleased to be able to support the organisation in helping the local community. Rotarian Paul thanked the staff and volunteers for their hospitality and for an interesting and informative visit. Perhaps not such a secret anymore!

Mel herself was dressed in an 1870 bathing costume as she spoke, together with the necessary cap which was not of course waterproof but which helped to hide the hair as the elaborate hairstyles of the day would not be practical when bathing. Indeed hair pieces and wigs particularly would soon come adrift when getting wet. And so Mel took the members through the ages as she explained the different customs for both men and women over the years as bathing practices and outfits constantly changed. Finally she finished on explaining all about the bathing machines and how they were used. The meeting on May 9th will be given by Mr Stephen Flinders, a very popular speaker and his talk is entitled 'The Life and Travels of Robert Bruce Napoleon Walker' Please feel free to join us.

Beaumanor World War 2 “Y” Listeners

Shepshed Runners Tackle The Loughborough Half Marathon A change in the 13 mile course for 2017 saw runners visit Shepshed twice, running along the Garendon trail followed by the hard climb into Hathern. Shepshed Running club members both ran and marshalled locally, ensuring a safe race for the 600 entries. First SRC runner home and in 18th place was Paul Wooldridge (show above) in a time of 1hr 25m 18s. Club Chairman Richard Bibb said "We had three women running their first Half Vicky Berrington, Helen Cross and Liz Fisher. Both Helen and Liz came through our Thursday nights beginners sessions."

Over the two-month period February to March the display, Beaumanor World War 2 “Y” Listeners, has received a considerable amount of footfall in addition to some very kind comments made in the Comments Book. The Display was opened by Francis Ellingworth son of Commander Ellingworth OIC Beaumanor during 1941/45. In addition, a number of family members of the “Y” Listeners attended the Display and has stated by the Chairman of the Local Studies Library Volunteers, “The families appear to have had a wonderful time exchanging experiences as passed down by their parents, who served at Beaumanor and they all seemed to enjoy the opportunity to meet other families. There was, as they say, a great “vibe”. We have been asked what happens to the Display now? Following discussions with Beaumanor staff it has been agreed that the Display will be moved to Beaumanor with a view to being displayed at a later date.

Guru Singh Update On Ventoux Challenge Many thanks for your excellent support for my Mont Ventoux challenge on 24 June 2017 when I hope to ride up this iconic Tour de France mountain three times in one day along three different routes. I will be riding with 9 other cyclists thanks to logistical support from The Leicestershire Air Ambulance Service for who I shall be raising funds. So far my total stands at £510 out of a target of £1000. Last month I gave you the wrong link for online donations. Apologies if anyone has tried and failed to get a link. The correct link is www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Guru-Singh5 Donations can also be left at Ryatt's Optometry in The Bull Ring, Charnwood Pharmacy and with Keith Breen at The Black Swan on Loughborough Road. Meanwhile my training is continuing at a reasonable pace. Thanks to The Shepshed Cycling Club and my friends from The Hope Against Cancer cycling group who have actively encouraged me and at time dragged me along steep climbs especially in the Rutland area and our own Beacon Hill. The county Air Ambulance Service provides urgent and life saving help and rescue in medical emergencies. It is funded entirely by voluntary donations. Each rescue costs over £2000 so any amount we can raise will enable this service to continue.

Great Central Museum Work Progress Planning is now well underway for the new museum at Leicester North, which will be part funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and built next to the existing Great Central Railway station. The project is a partnership between the GCR, Leicester City Council and the National Railway Museum, and is planned to open to visitors in 2020/21. In 2015, the GCR secured a first round pass from the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of a £10m grant allocation to build the museum which will house locomotives, carriages and other significant items, including from the NRM’s collection. The many exhibits will tell the story of how the GCR and other railways contributed to the social and economic history of Leicester and the County. The estimated cost of the museum is £18m with the HLF contributing £10m. Architects WilkinsonEyre were selected last autumn with a winning outline design. Since then there has been continual refinement of the design details, involving discussion with the in-house track and signalling volunteers. They have produced a series of revised proposals including an alternative turntable position, a second (island) platform and buffer stops. The railway is now recruiting a range of expert advisors to help with museum planning, as part of the HLF’s Development grant funding. These essential members of the team include project managers, quantity surveyors (to pin down estimated costs), activity planners (to help consult with local communities) and a Business Development Manager (to help fund-raise for the project). We are consulting with local schools, as learning will be a major feature of the new museum. ‘Visitors’ views sought in Prize draw survey We need the help of our visitors now to tell us about their experiences on the railway as it is now, and what they would like to see in the new museum. Please do take a look at the short survey www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/GCRonlinesurvey Paper copies will be available from all of the stations on the Great Central Railway. The survey will close at the end of May. All entries submitted to the project team will be put into our £50 cash prize draw, and you will be helping to shape one of the region’s most exciting new heritage attractions.

Hallcroft Opticians Tea Party Hallcroft Opticians in Shepshed hosted a Tea Party on Thursday 20th April2017 on behalf of Guide Dogs. On the day they had a selection of lovely cakes to go with the tea or coffee and they had a Tombola and name a puppy competition. Also the local supporter group for guide dogs came along to show their support and of course there were guide dogs to make a fuss of. Apart from the weather there was a good turn out and they raised £171.10 Bonita would like to say a huge thank you to all that came and supported the event and to say it was lovely to see Penny and Mike Herreran. Some of you will remember Penny and Mike and Guide Dog Clover. They moved away from Shepshed, about 5 years ago, to Leamington Spa as they both work at the HQ for Guide Dogs. This money will go towards providing the support a blind or partially sighted person needs to gain independence and to help them live a normal life. Each guide dog partnership costs almost £180,000 from birth through to retirement and beyond. The Loughborough supporter group aims to raise funds and awareness in the local area and is supported by a number of Guide dog owners and volunteers. For more information about volunteering for the local group please contact Steve, group organiser on blindsteve@hotmail.co.uk or call on 07856168086

The Black Stuff Well I can honestly say I’ve never been so busy! It’s lovely to speak to so many people in our region who are keen to get outdoors and make use of their gardens even if they may need a makeover before they can do so! The weather has been kind to us recently and I hope it encourages even more people to embrace their outdoor space and get their hands dirty.

Sowing Seeds

Potting Up

Acid-loving Acer

Talking of dirt.... Having worked in plant nurseries for many years I hear all sorts of queries about what soil or compost to use for a particular job in the garden, so I thought it might be useful to recommend some suitable products to use around the garden. Soil – the stuff we should all have beneath our feet unless we are living in a high-rise. The typical garden soil in our region is a heavy clay loam, although there are areas with exception. Clay loams are nutrient rich due to the ability of the clay particles to hold on to useful nutrients. Unfortunately clay also has it’s down sides. If compacted it can drain poorly and be very wet in winter whilst dry rock hard in summer. The best way to improve clay soils is to add manure or garden compost along with grit of sharp sand . If you need to top up an border or fill a raised bed then look to source good quality topsoil. The topsoil needs to be weed

free and screened to remove any large unwanted materials. Manure & garden compost The most useful product for the garden for incorporating into soil, well rotted 2-3 year old manure or homemade garden compost is something you can never have too much of. Whether you’ve a poorly drained clay or a free draining sandy soil, manure/garden compost will help provide an open structure, to aid drainage in heavy ground whilst giving a water retentive element to dry soils. It also adds nutrition and bulk to the soil also helping container grown plants established once planted. Making your own garden compost requires space and time but if you are short on both, garden centres sell sealed bags of manure or soil improver which is an instant option. Avoid using manure in containers as it can be too ‘strong’ a product for bedding plants etc. Compost – peat based multi-purpose The bags you’ll find in garden centres, nurseries, DIY stores and even supermarkets. It is made with a base of peat (which can vary in quality hugely). The better quality brands also have a base level of feed and a rewetting agent to allow for ease of watering. This is the type of compost to use for containers, hanging baskets, window boxes belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk

etc. I would advise you buy the best you can afford and avoid the cheap faded bags you find piled up left over from last year! Compost – soil based Often known as John-Innes (JI), this soil based compost is made with a base of loam which makes it heavier to handle but worth the effort. The loam element allows the compost to retain feed better and retain water so it doesn’t dry out as quickly as the peat-based products; having said that it also drains more freely. I like to use John Innes for pretty much all of my potting, mixing it with a multi-purpose to create a lighter weight mix. N.B. JI 1 is for seedlings, JI2 is for potting on and JI3 is for shrubs and long term plantings in containers. Compost – ericaceous This is used for acid loving plants such as Camellias, Pieris, Skimmia, Rhododendron & Azaleas and Hydrangeas with blue flowers. Usually made with a base of peat, it can dry out quickly in pots. Use in containers or dig in to the soil when planting acid-loving plants in the ground. I hope I’ve given you confidence to buy the right product for you gardening jobs. Next month I’ll be looking at various screening options for gardens.

Latest News From Spring has sprung and at Woodside we knew the signs even before we started to notice the new leaves on the trees or the birds singing and getting ready to build their nests! You see we have a problem which seems to get earlier and more dramatic at this time of the year. Kittens! Okay so yes they are sweet... and cute... and lovely..... But the thing is there are too many being born and not enough people wanting to adopt them. The figures are quite astounding. Did you know that an average cat can have 1-8 kittens per litter and 2-3 litters per year? During her productive life, one un-neutered female cat could have more than 100 kittens. Without neutering, a single pair of cats and their kittens could produce as many as 420,000 kittens in just 7 years! The figures however mask the health risks to the sexually active cat population, whether homed or feral. This can include feline aids, leukaemia, cat-flu, infections from fight wounds which can cause serious issues for an untreated cat, not to mention the high mortality on the roads as they roam to find a mate. So why are we finding this such a challenge at Woodside? We aren’t the only animal centre to have this difficulty but I can only describe the challenges it brings from our prospective. Early each spring numerous pregnant stray cats are handed to us and they have not been microchipped we have no way of knowing where they come from. We have space for approximately 70 cats in the cattery and have had to build up a network of fosterers who help at this point by taking these pregnant cats into their homes. The mum is health checked and monitored during her pregnancy and our fosterers are able to assess the mum and encourage her to be more friendly towards humans – she may have been abandoned and therefore not trust us at this point. Pregnant and nursing cats need to be calm and certainly prefer being in a home as opposed to our more clinical, busy and noisy environment in the cattery. Of equal importance is that mum is able to have her kittens in safety and they grow up being used to household routines and noises and to being handled from a young age. After the vet has said they are ready to go to their forever homes, the feline family are returned to Woodside.

All of them are neutered to prevent further unwanted litters, they have been health checked and are fully – vaxed and have been treated for fleas and worms. They are also microchipped. Mum will often be adopted with one of her kittens but generally people tend to choose the kittens first. Woodside is hugely successful with rehoming kittens and that is fantastic. However, to put it into perspective, this leaves us battling to encourage visitors to take on the “older” cats. Unspayed females can produce their first litter after reaching sexual maturity at 4 months of age. It’s a myth that cats (and dogs for that matter) need to have a first litter. And it’s often difficult for owners to find homes for kittens their female has. Cats make delightful pets (I know as we have 5 rescue adults) but as with all pets they need to be planned for. The fact that Woodside has so many adults looking for homes means that we have to ensure that our cats are all neutered prior to adoption. So, what can you do to help? • If you want to adopt a cat(s)

Residents Of All Ages And Abilities Keep Active At A Walking Group In Sileby A walking group in Sileby is helping people with mobility issues stay active and enjoy the outdoors. The walks are held throughout the summer and will resume on Wednesday, May 10 at 2.30pm at Sileby Community Centre, High Street, Sileby. The walks are run by the Highgate Medical Centre’s Patient Participation Group and is led by Christine and Dave Thompson who are part of the group and residents of Sileby.

Two Newfoundland Dogs Find New Homes After Makeover By The Groom Room Two Newfoundland dogs - four year old Koda and three year old Rio have found new homes after a dramatic makeover. The dogs came into Woodside Animal Centre – the Leicester branch of the RSPCA – along with a further Newfoundland, 8 year old Bethan, after their owner had fallen ill and could no longer take care of them. All three were in a sorry state with long, matted coats which were causing them serious problems.

Christine said: “Our walks are relatively short at around one mile and we keep a steady pace so it’s suitable for people who may have mobility issues or need support while walking. The group is a great way to get a bit of exercise and socialise with friends, without being too difficult and so far members have really enjoyed the walks.”

“The animals were really struggling to see, had problems with their ears and were visibly uncomfortable,” explained Kim Talbot, Animal Care Specialist at Woodside. “Their coats were so long and matted we couldn’t even carry out the neutering procedure. We knew the dogs would need professional grooming, but that it would be expensive for such large dogs.”

The walks are supported by Charnwood Borough Council, in partnership with the Charnwood Walking for Health scheme and Fusion Lifestyle.

But a local grooming service – The Groom Room, based at Pets at Home, Fosse Park – came to the rescue, inviting the three for a much-needed pampering session.

Matt Richardson, Community Sport and Physical Activity Development Officer at the Council, said: “Our walking groups are popular with people because it’s a great way to keep active and you can have a chat and see your friends too. We’re committed to helping residents to stay healthy and walking is great exercise for all ages and abilities. We’ve got several groups around the borough so visit our website to find one near you.” Walking groups are held in: Shepshed – Weekly walks every Monday, 10.30am, Hall Croft, Shepshed Barrow upon Soar - Weekly walks every Tuesday at 10.30am, the Three Crowns Inn car park, Barrow upon Soar Gorse Covert, Loughborough - Weekly walks every Wednesday at 10.30am, Gorse Covert Community Centre, Maxwell Drive Mountsorrel - Twice monthly walks at 10.30am on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month meeting at Sorrel Youth Cafe, The Green Quorn - Monthly walks at 10.30am on the 3rd Thursday of the month from outside the Medical Centre, Quorn Village car park For more information about walks in your area visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/walkingforhealth or contact the Sport and Active Recreation Team at Charnwood Borough Council on 01509 632535 or at active.together@charnwood.gov.uk

Koda and Rio were the first to benefit from a thorough wash and trim. “They looked amazing when they’d had their coats sorted out,” said Kim. “You could actually see what stunning dogs they are! And they just seemed so much happier.” Koda and Rio were both were snapped up the following week and are now settling nicely into their new homes. Bethan, who came into the centre wary of people and in need of a little more paw holding from Kim, had to wait for her pampering session. But she is now looking very fine, has been signed off by the vet and is ready for a special family to offer her a new forever home too. “We’re so grateful to the Groom Room,” said Kim. “If they hadn’t stepped in, we wouldn’t have been able to get the same result for the dogs.” “It costs nearly £20,000 per week to run the Centre and we are entirely reliant on donations and support from organisations like the Groom Room to be able to help dogs like Koda, Rio and Bethan.” Michelle Capwell, The Groom Rooms Salon Manager said: “We were really pleased to help and it was lovely to see the girls so transformed. We’re delighted that Koda and Rio have found new homes and wish Bethan the same good luck.” If you are interested in adopting Bethan, contact the centre on: 0116 233 6677, or visit Woodside Animal Centre, 190 Scudamore Road, Leicester, LE3 1UQ.

Shepshed And District Camera Club The members of Shepshed and District Camera Club had a busy few weeks leading up to the Easter break, not least of which being the two annual competitions against the clubs from Ashby and Coalville. The Ashby club won both the Image Matching and Print competitions with Shepshed third in the former and second in the other, more effort will be made next season to improve on those results. Several in-club evenings took place including a Table-top photography session, a DVD presentation of the work of the well know Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado and an excellent demonstration of the newly introduced photo editing software Serif Affinity Photo by club member Pete Richardson. The second round of the annual competition league took place in mid-March, the two sections being Open Subject for prints and Portrait/ People for projected images. Judged by Ralph Duckett the following awards were made.

Prints - Open Subject 1st. Paul Rennocks - Winter Sunrise 2nd. Chris Coxon 3rd. Sue Hutton LRPS

Open Day At Hind Leys Swimming Pool! Come And Make A Splash! On Sunday 28th May 10.00am to 3.00pm, the pool will be open to the public for a free session, and to show off the recent improvements. From 10.00 till 12.00am there will be a free public swim session, and a chance to try Aquafit. The pool will also be open for the public to view the facilities. There will be hot and cold drinks with cakes and biscuits and a Tombola stall. The Shepshed Swimming Club will be in the pool from 1.00-2.00pm and the Shepshed Dolphins will be in the pool from 2.00-3.00pm. The Shepshed Rugby Club will be holding their Family Fun Day at the Youth Centre, opposite the pool from 1.00-4.00pm. Their members will be using the pool from 12.00-1.00pm. Their programme will include a Barbecue, Bouncy Castle and an Ice Cream Van, so there will be lots going on. Hind Leys Pool has public swimming sessions, and clubs and lessons are available, so it offers something for everyone from toddlers to OAPs. Look at the website or facebook page

for details! Our usual public pool sessions: Sundays 10-12; Tuesdays 6 – 6.45 adult beginners, 6.45 – 7.30 lane swim, 7.30 – 815 Aquafit; Wednesdays 6-8pm public swim and 8-9pm lane swim, Thursdays Early bird 7-8am. Come and make a splash! More details from Danielle Soni, Pool Manager on 01509 504511 email dsoni@shepshedlearning.co.uk The pool has been considerably improved recently, through co-operation between the Pool Committee, Rotary Club of Shepshed, Shepshed Lions, Charnwood Rotary, Hind Leys College, Shepshed Swimming Club, Shepshed Dolphins (a Disabled Swimming Club), Shepshed Lifeguards and Shepshed Town Council. The whole building has been refreshed to bring it up to date, and everyone comments on how nice it looks. There’s a lot to do to ensure the pool has a future for the people of Shepshed – it’s nearly 60 years old! The Swimming Pool Committee is looking for more members who will work with us on maintaining and improving it for the benefit of the community, and we shall need a very active committee so that Shepshed continues to have this super facility. If you are interested, please contact Max from Shepshed Rotary, on 07913 899 079 email cmboden@gmail.com

CHRISTINE RADFORD Your Borough Councillors can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough. We deal with housing problems, (such as you trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property and planning issues.

Empty Homes – Unlock The Potential Of An Empty Home

Planning

Find out more by contacting CBC empty homes officer on 01509 634938. Alternatively visit www. charnwood.gov.uk/empty_homes.

Land off Hathern Road - The reserved matters application for 270 dwellings at land off Hathern Road, Shepshed has now been given the go ahead at a planning committee on April 6th. Approval of the outline application was given in July 2015. Cllr Bebbington, as Ward Cllr spoke against the application as he believed the developer had failed to resolve the flooding problem, they considered the volume of water but not how to take it away. All four of your Borough Councillors as well as the Town Council had raised concerns at the very early stages about flooding in this area. The full reserved matters application can be found at portal. charnwood.gov.uk by searching P/16/0686/2 Your Ward Cllrs have now raised concerns regarding the removal of hedges on this site, especially as it is during the bird breeding season and have asked for a copy of the report by the Ecologist. Your Ward Cllrs do their best in keeping an eye on planning in Shepshed and do appreciate the support of residents bringing to their attention concerns/issues they have during building works. Jubilee Walk – Old Railway Track We would like to report that new benches have now been placed along Jubilee Walk for the enjoyment of walkers.

Charnwood Borough Council can help; they have grants for home owners to part-fund refurbishments. Charnwood can also advise property owners and people who have concerns about empty homes.

GLW Feed We are still receiving concerns of offsite odour in the vicinity of the GLW installation. GLW installation operates under an Environmental Permit issued by the Environment Agency. If you are aware of odour problems, make a note of the date and time and then contact Andy McParland the Specialist Environmental Health Officer at CBC on 01509 634784. Advance Notice Of A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order A TTRO is to be made for the following location in Belton Street to facilitate Severn Trent with manhole replacement works. The duration of the TTRO is for a period commencing 24th May 2017, it is not anticipated to exceed a period of 1 day. We shall continue to hold our regular monthly surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council offices, Charnwood Road, from 10-11am. No appointments are necessary.
