Swannington Heritage Trust A Chance To Make A Difference Have you ever felt that you would like to make a noticeable difference to your community? Well that’s what our Land Management Volunteers do on Wednesday and Friday mornings.

Facilitating Walkers’ Access Walking is one of the most popular leisure activities in the UK. About 13,500 people walk through our woodlands each year. Our volunteers frequently receive feedback from walkers that using our sites is so enjoyable because the paths are well maintained. If you are walking past Hough Mill and would like to look inside, then provided our volunteers have the keys they will open up for you. Not all of our volunteers are history experts, but they will do their best to help. Nurturing Woodlands Left to their own devices woodlands rapidly become inaccessible. Our volunteers prune trees and shrubs, fell dead trees, cutback brambles and control bracken. We also rejuvenate the gorse bushes in the Gorse Field, split and transplant snowdrops, create log piles for insects and maintain ponds as wildlife havens. Heritage Conservation What makes us different to wildlife conservation groups is that we also have a heritage conservation role. Projects include painting coal mine wheels, conserving a 19th century winding engine, repairing a horse gin and looking after the remnants of former coal mine and railway buildings. Comradeship Perhaps the most important element of our team is that our volunteers enjoy working together, swapping tales during the coffee break and sharing a joke. We are fortunate to have great volunteers, but work opportunities always exceeds our capacity. A few more helpers would make a big difference, so come along and see what we do; to find out more email chairman@ swannington-heritage.co.uk or phone 01530 222 833. Christmas at the Mill - 2pm Sunday 3rd December Enjoy the start of the Christmas season by visiting our 200 year old Hough Mill. Admire the decorations put up by Teddy Miller and his family. Meet Santa. Have a go at traditional games and craft activities. Munch on a cake or hot dog, washed down with a cup of hot chocolate or mulled wine. Hough Mill is accessed by a 300 metre track from St George’s Hill, Swannington, LE67 8QW. See our website www.swannington-heritage.co.uk or Hough Mill Facebook page for more details.

Probus Club The usual club business preceded a good lunch and we then settled down to our hear our speaker Mr Noel Worley, who spoke about the history of the gypsum industry in the Midlands. Mr Worley spent 35 years of his working life in the gypsum industry. Gypsum or calcium sulphate is a mined mineral which is full of water but when dried it becomes plaster or alabaster. There are several mines left in Britain producing 1-1.5 million tonnes of gypsum per annum. Our closest mines are at East Leake and Barrow on Soar. Originally there were dozens of mines independently owned but now most mines come under the umbrella of British Gypsum who have subsequently been taken over by Siniat of Belgium.
Shepshed Scaresheep Festival 2017 Results! I can at last announce the winners of the Scaresheep Festival 2017. The best household was Mr Brown, 4 Hathern Road, Best organisation Christchurch Methodist both voted by the public, and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue have won the Town Council vote. Runners up were The Whitmore's for the household and The Willows Care Home for organisation. The winner of the prize draw is Ms Platts of Northwood Drive. We also raised £571.02 for Shepshed Volunteer Centre. Thank you and thank you to everyone who took part.
One of the by-produts of gypsum is a very material called Carlyte which is initially a soluble pastelike substance which, when moulded and dried, becomes extremely hard and durable. It has been used as ornamental decoration for church porches and interior mouldings in houses. After a very interesting talk our President, Pat Harris, thanked Mr Worley and the members showed their appreciation. We were then reminded that the next meeting is on 6th November 2017 at Junction 23 Restaurant where new members are always welcome. Please contact our secretary Wilf Shenton on 01509 769802 for further details.

Michael Wortley 1936 - 2017 We are sad to report that Shepshed’s local historian and well know personality, Michael Wortley, sadly passed away in August this year. Michael was well known for his historic ‘Magic Lantern’ slide shows of photographs of Shepshed from the 1850s to more modern times. The slide shows brought these old images to new audiences and raised thousands of pounds for good causes. Michael was a pillar of Shepshed society and the ‘go-to’ man for information about the village. He led a packed life which saw him on active service in the Royal Leicestershire Regiment, running his own vehicle restoration business and as a much loved family man. Michael lived life to the full and will be greatly missed by his family, many friends and the people of Shepshed.

Shepshed History Society Tuesday October 10th the Shepshed History Society had a very entertaining and in depth talk given by Mr Jake Billingham on the previously unknown stories concerning the Titantic disaster. To begin his talk he first centred on the many characters connected to the ill fated liner, from ship designers, investors, crew and passengers. Many of whom had they survived could have put their own input as to what happened on that fateful night in April 12th when the unthinkable occurred and the unsinkable liner sank and so many people drowned. He also explained about the luxurious decor that was second to none as well as the up market etiquette that was expected of the 1st class passengers. However the behaviour in getting into the life boats later did leave a lot to be desired in some cases but was understandable when in hind sight, the authorities did acknowledge that there were too few lifeboats to cope with the many hundreds of passengers. Lessons of course were to be learned in the aftermath of this disastrous tragedy that shocked the world, but of course far too late for the ill fated passengers who lost their lives on that dreadful night when so many people had a horrendous freezing cold death. The November meeting to be held on 14th will be given Mr Clive Katz who will explain about the back to back cottages in days gone by. Please feel free to join us at Glenmore Centre.
Arson Attack On Children’s Play Area Celandine Road On the 9th October at 03:42 we were called to a fire at the children’s play area on Celandine Road in Shepshed. If you have CCTV or any other information on this incident please contact Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. Please help us find the individuals responsible and share this post.

Shepshed WI News At their September meeting members of Shepshed WI enjoyed a Harvest Auction to which members of Coleorton WI had been invited. In October two members of the Leicester Guild of Story Tellers entertained members with a variety of stories. Although the general subject was death some of the stories were amusing. They explained how story telling started many generations ago when people would gather in groups to listen to stories that been passed on over the years. It proved to be a fascinating evening which was enjoyed by everyone. The next meeting will be the Annual meeting when members will elect new or existing members to the committee. This will be followed by preparations for the annual Christmas Tree Festival being held at St Botolphs Church in November and a bring and buy Christmas sales table. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at Christchurch Methodist Church, Field Street, Shepshed at 7.30 pm and visitors are always welcome.

Trip To Brittany By Shepshed And District Twinning Association On 14th September, eleven members of the association took a 55-minute flight from EMA to Dinard in Brittany and were greeted by 35 French friends from Shepshed's twin town of Domont who had travelled by coach from Paris to meet them. There then followed two action-packed days all organised by the French. This was in return for a successful joint visit to Liverpool, which the English organised in 2013. The two groups enjoyed a long weekend based in Dinan, a beautiful, walled medieval town by the river Rance. The blue skies and autumn sunshine made the graceful grey stone buildings even more stunning. A visit to the stylish seaside town of Dinard revealed that the resort had been established by a wealthy British woman in the 1850s. From Dinard's port, the group looked across the Rance estuary to the delightful walled city of St Malo. A road over a dam now links the two historic towns. The dam also provides a good percentage of Brittany's power needs using clean tidal power. The big variation in tides also favours oyster production. A visit to an oyster farm showed just how technical the work is, but the Anglo-French group also found out how good the oysters taste. Needless to say, there were plenty of good meals and good company – a chance to catch up and to discuss matters of concern in both countries. There was support for the notion that Britain’s departure from the EU should not be allowed to damage the real friendships that have been built over many years. The Shepshed Twinning Association's next trip will be to Domont in 2019 to celebrate 30 years of friendship. If you are a Francophile and would like to join the Association, you would be most welcome. There is a variety of social events during the year as well as the opportunity to meet the very friendly French people who live in our twin town. Interested? Shepshed Lions Club Annual Senior Citizens Lunch Shepshed Lions Club was delighted to host 60 Senior Citizens for lunch at the Glenmore Centre, Shepshed on Saturday 21st October 2017. The guests were treated to a 3-course lunch with a choice of two starters, two main courses and two desserts, together with wine, followed by Bingo and a raffle. Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders Scheme Shepshed Lions Community First Responders will be 4 years old on Saturday 2nd December 2017 and to celebrate this they are starting an ambitious project to put as many Community Public Access Defibrillators (CPADS) in public places around the Borough of Charnwood.. Each one will cost £1000 plus the costs of fitting them. Tesco stores in Loughborough in The Rushes, Leicester Road, and Park Road together with Tesco’s stores in Sileby and Shepshed will be supporting the project through their “Bags of Help” Scheme. If you shop in any of these Tesco Stores, please consider collecting the tokens each time you shop and putting them into the slot for the “CPR and Defibrillators- Dispel the myths”. The more tokens for the scheme the better the chances for the Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders to provide more CPADS in our communities. Once the CPADS are in place training in administering effective CPR and using the defibrillator, will be provided free of charge to the local population in the area of the CPADS. Research shows that the chances of survival of a sudden Cardiac Arrest are enhanced if early effective CPR and Defibrillation is put into action. . This project will run from 1st November 2017 until 1st January 2018. The Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders has also been successful in applying to the Aviva Community Fund for funding to purchase CPADS and provide training in administering CPR and using the defibrillator. It will be decided by public votes so please vote for our project to enable us to provide more CPADS and training in our communities. Together we can save lives that are being needlessly lost because people are afraid to get involved in trying to help the patient. Please use the link below to view the project in more detail and we urge you to vote for our project and share the link with as many people as possible. Voting started from Tuesday 24th October 2017. https://community-fund.aviva.co.uk/voting/project/view/17-1795 Shepshed Lions Club President and Coordinator of the Community First Responders said, “As a Community First Responder for almost 4 years I have witnessed first hand the devastation caused to families by an avoidable death as a result of Cardiac Arrest. In many cases, early effective CPR and use of a defibrillator could have saved the patients life. I want more people to survive.”

Christmas Presents Stolen From The Great Central Railway The Great Central Railway has had 370 Christmas presents stolen from one of its carriages at Quorn station. Spokesman Michael Stokes said “Sometime in the last two weeks, one of our carriages has been broken into and 370 presents have been stolen. The presents were to be donated to the Leicester Royal Infirmary children’s ward and Rainbows. All of them were wrapped ready for delivery. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those people who have donated replacement presents already.” The police are investigating the incident and have asked anyone with any information to get in touch.
The Trials Of Driving At Night Looking out of the window into the gloom reminded me of how important anti-reflective coatings are when driving at night. Now the clocks have gone back and evenings are drawing in we will be driving in dim light even more. When light passes through a lens a percentage is reflected off the front surface, further light is absorbed as the light passes through the lens and more internally reflected when it hits the back surface of the lens. This means that the amount of light exiting the lens and entering your eye is significantly reduced, an important factor when driving in the twilight or night-time hours. These reflections cause disruption to vision and cause point sources of light, such as headlights to “star” and create halos all of which are distracting to say the least. Fortunately help is available in the form of a special anti-reflection coating designed to reduce the glare to an absolute minimum. Over the years, as technology has improved these have become more and more efficient. The latest coatings combine anti reflection with a tough scratch resistance. Combine this with anti- greasing and easy clean properties and you have a lens that is not only optically excellent to look through, but more invisible to look at so looking cosmetically clearer and easy to clean and look after.

Shepshed And District Camera Club After the traditional summer break the members of Shepshed and District Camera Club returned to the Shepshed Council Offices in Charnwood Road in early September to start the 2017/2018 season. It was pleasing to find quite a few prospective members there as well and several of them have since joined the Club to become full members. An early meeting included the projection of a large selection of winning images from the Royal Photographic Societies recent annual exhibitions which hopefully gave members a target to aim for in their own photography. The main evening so far has been the annual ’4 New Images’ Competition in which each entrant provides four of their most recent images that have not been in previous competitions and each is judged and awarded marks out of 20. The entrant with the highest aggregate score from their entries wins the competition. The judge this year was Colin Machin, a well known photographer in the Charnwood area, who gave a good account of himself with a variety of helpful and entertaining comments about each image. The marking resulted in Kelvin Rozworski being declared the winner with 67 points scored and Kevin Padmore and Sue Hutton, LRPS. tied for second place with 65 each. Two more ‘in-house’ evenings took place after the competition before the Club paid its annual visit to the Sileby Photography Exhibition and a week was taken out for the half-term break. The Club continues to meet through November and December with a variety of lectures and competitions, the two highlights being the Annual Dinner in December and the appearance of award winning Photographer Chris Upton with his talk entitled ‘Thoresby, The End of The Mine’ at Shepshed Bowls Club at 7.30pm on 28th. November, a meeting which is open to the general public with an admission fee of just £3.00. Further details about the Club’s activities can be obtained by telephoning Alan at 07733 314605 or going to the website at www.shepshedcameraclub.co.uk
After intensive research and wearer trials DRIVESAFE LENSES by Zeiss have been specifically designed for spectacle wearers to feel safer and more relaxed when driving in their everyday specs. Due to bad weather or low light conditions wearers' visibility can be reduced, causing many people to feel uncomfortable and stressed when driving in such conditions. Drivesafe Lenses, due to their Luminance Design Technology give improved vision in low light conditions. There are some eye conditions such as Cataracts which can cause problems when driving at night and an obvious but perhaps overlooked problem is a dirty/greasy windscreen and scratched spectacle lenses. This article was supplied by Bonita Irish FBDO Dispensing Optician at Hallcroft Opticians.
Business Start-Ups Must Now Provide Staff Pensions, Warns Local Tax Specialist New businesses which launch from 1st October must include staff pension schemes in their start-up costs, even if they are only employing one person, a local tax specialist has warned. Carl Whitehead who owns TaxAssist Accountants in Shepshed said: “From this October, any business start-up which employs one or more people, must auto-enrol them on a company pension scheme and contribute to their pension pot. There is no breathing space for new businesses under the new pension rules, despite the host of other cost considerations they face as they launch their new enterprise. They must set up a company pension scheme and a total of 2% of eligible staff’s wages must be contributed; of which at least 1% must come from the employer. Those percentages will increase year-on-year until they reach a total minimum contribution of 8% in 2019; of which at least 3% must come from the employer. Between now and March next year, some 400,000 small businesses across the UK will be reaching their staging date for workplace pension schemes and we’re advising many local business owners, who have now received notices from the Pensions Regulator. Many have planned well in advance and have fully compliant pension schemes up and running already, but for those employers yet to comply with the new rules, they must act quickly. The Pensions Regulator is carrying out spot checks across the country and can impose a £400 fixed penalty, escalating to daily fines set at a minimum of £50 per day for non-compliance and the possibility of civil penalties and court action.” TaxAssist Accountants Shepshed is a local business providing tax and accountancy advice and services purely to small businesses.

Amazing Animal Tales - News From... It used to be believed that animal behaviour was governed only by instinct. However careful observational studies have shown that many emotions and reactions to situations thought to be uniquely human are found in animals. What an animal does or the way it behaves is not just instinctive but can be planned or empathetic and display strong emotional tendencies just like those experienced by humans as the following true stories illustrate. Jasmine was a rescue greyhound who lived in the Nuneaton and Warwickshire wildlife sanctuary. Found as a pup in a dreadful condition, she was taken to the RSPCA where the owner of the sanctuary, Geoff met and adopted her. One day a young fox cub was brought in to the sanctuary whose outlook was rather bleak. Geoff became very concerned when Jasmine started to lick her but his fears disappeared when the fox cub responded to Jasmine’s touch. Over the next few days Jasmine continued to ‘mother’ the fox cub named Roxy, who grew strong and continued to live at the sanctuary with her best friend, Jasmine. However Roxy was not the only animal to receive Jasmine’s care. When other animals entered the sanctuary Jasmine welcomed them with licks and cuddles regardless of species. Amazingly the orphaned, injured and abandoned animals she cared for included more fox cubs, badger cubs, chicks, guinea pigs, puppies, rabbits and a roe deer fawn. Sadly Jasmine passed away in 2011 and is remembered as the most amazing greyhound in the world! When her calf was taken from her and sent to the local abattoir, Emma the cow escaped from her field. She ran more than four miles to find the building where her calf was in line to be slaughtered. Emma made such a commotion that her calf ran frantically to her. Touched by what had happened the calf was spared and together with his mother returned to the farmer who kept them both as pets. The ability to be cunning is illustrated by a story about Ai Hin, a female giant panda who manipulated her keepers to get exactly what she wanted. When Ai Hin had been pregnant she was moved to a special room with air conditioning and given her favourite food of buns, fruit and bamboo. Consequently when she displayed signs of another pregnancy such as moving less and refusing food her keepers at the Giant Panda Breeding Research Centre were so thrilled they set up cameras to film the birth in her special room. However as time passed there was no birth and the keepers became suspicious. Tests revealed that Ai Hin had never had a second pregnancy. Experts believe she had faked the signs of being pregnant to get her special accommodation and favourite food. Rats are not the most popular animal to say the least. However they are known to be very intelligent. Females are very caring mothers and rats are known to look after one another. When two miners were walking home after their nightshift they saw two rats walking side-by-side in the distance. When they had caught up with them one of the miners bludgeoned one of the rats to death with his shovel. However the men were puzzled why the remaining rat had not run away. On closer inspection they saw that the rat was blind and had a piece of straw in its mouth. The miners realised that the rat they ha killed had been guiding the blind rat. Each had held the end of a piece of straw in its mouth. A policeman in the US was on foot patrol when a duck kept tugging at his trouser legs. The duck was so persistent that when she started to walk in a particular direction the policeman followed her. Arriving at a grate
in the road the policeman saw a number of ducklings had fallen through it. The policeman removed the grate and carefully lifted out the trapped ducklings who were reunited with their mother.
A farmer in Germany had a pet bull named Barnaby. When the farmer
died suddenly Barnaby was so distressed he left his field and searched
for his master. After walking a mile the young bull arrived at the cemetery where the farmer was buried. He jumped over the cemetery wall and found his master’s grave. Barnaby stayed at the grave and would not
move he was so distressed. Barnaby’s vigil lasted for several days after which he was calm enough to be led back to his pasture.
A surfer in the US was attacked and injured by a great white shark. With
blood pouring from the surfer’s wound the shark prepared for a second attack while the surfer’s friends looked on helplessly. Suddenly a pod of dolphins appeared as if from nowhere and formed a circle round
the injured surfer. They remained protecting the surfer from the shark
until a sufficiently large wave carried him safely to shore. When he was
interviewed on TV the surfer and his friends were convinced the action of the dolphin pod was deliberate.
It seems there is more to animal behaviour than we realise or often give them credit for. They experience the same emotions as we do and our treatment of them should reflect this. Elizabeth Allison

Your Borough Councillors can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough. We deal with housing problems, (such as you trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, Anti-Social Behaviour whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property and planning issues. Registering Complaints Over the past few years registering complaints with Councils has become much easier via their web-sites – Charnwood and Leicestershire have easy to use forms for the most common problems, and are usually accessible from smart-phones as well – it is certainly worth taking a quick look at both websites and bookmarking the relevant forms, especially if you think you may need to record multiple occurrences of a problem (such as having a noisy neighbour, moving in next door!). It is often a good idea to copy in your local councillor to any complaint as well, so that they are aware, and can support you with it. But the key is to get the problem registered. Beware Of All Cold Callers Criminals come in all shapes and sizes, with some using highly sophisticated techniques for targeting vulnerable people. The problem is that many victims would never consider themselves to be vulnerable – and would be convinced that they would never fall victim to a scam – but criminals play on hesitation and doubt and we can all become victims very easily. A good rule is never buy or sell from cold callers to your home, whether they be standing at your front door, via a letter through your letterbox, or from an email to your computer, a call to your telephone, or a text to your mobile. Always ask yourself; “is this offer too good to be true?”, or “Would this organisation or person really contact me like this?”, or “why am I being asked for that information?, For more about scams and fraud, and how to avoid being a victim, see: www.actionfraud.police.uk A meeting was recently arranged by your local Councillors with an officer from the Trading Standards Department at LCC and an officer from CBC with residents in Park Court Shepshed outlining how to avoid being scammed and
how rogue traders can ruin lives. Statics show that 54% are over 75 and 57% live alone. Anti-Social Behaviour Shepshed at the moment is experiencing a spike in Antisocial behaviour and car crime. As you all know we are short on Police presence in Shepshed only having one warranted officer and two PCSO’s, who cannot be in two places at once. If you are witnessing any crime and are able, please dial 999 NOT 101. Dialling 999 which is an emergency number will give the police the best opportunity of catching the perpetrators in the act and putting a stop to the present situation we are getting in Shepshed. The Police will assess your call when they receive it and if you make it clear the crime is taking place as you speak, they will react accordingly. At this point may we remind you that the Festive season is close, so please keep your property secure and your presents out of sight to people who may look through your car and house windows. CCTV Cameras CCTV cameras are being considered by CBC who have some money left over from a grant which was given to the Town Team for the regeneration of Shepshed. One of the hold ups on this consideration is that when the Shepshed Master Plan was published in 2012, CCTV cameras were not included, but because of the change in crime figures in Shepshed cameras are now needed. Shepshed Town Team have to work to this master plan and your Borough Councillors are working with officers to get these cameras added to the list of items which was considered necessary to help in the regeneration of Shepshed. A further hold up was that the Labour party members of Shepshed Town Council did not want to fund the yearly maintenance costs of under £2,000, in fact some of them did not want cameras at all. In fact a Labour Town Councillor was heard to say at a recent meeting of the Town Team that cameras would be installed in Shepshed over her dead body. At the vote Labour were overruled by the Conservatives and UKIP members. There is still a lot to do, even if CBC gives the go ahead for cameras; they cannot just be installed. Letters have to be sent to all residents and businesses in the area covered by the cameras to ask if they have any objections.

November sees the always excellent annual Christchurch Gilbert & Sullivan production. This year the production is The Sorcerer. Performances run from Tuesday 7th November to Saturday 11th November at Iveshead School Theatre (formerly Hind Leys College). Evening performances are 7.30pm and there is a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. To book tickets please call 01509 504376. I’m sure everyone involved would be grateful to see many local supporters in the audience after the months of rehearsals, planning and preparation. I recently wrote to Biffa about their plans for Newhurst Quarry. Biffa are now working in partnership with Covanta and say that the Newhurst site remains a priority for them and they believe their incinerator plans will play a part in helping the Government and the UK deal with the disposal of our waste. They have told me that construction is planned to start in Summer 2018 and will take around 3 years. Biffa plan to re-start meetings of the local liaison group. I know this news will be greeted with great disappointment locally given the huge local opposition to the original plans. Of course we have waited for some time for work to start properly on the site and things may well change between now and next summer. I and your
LCC also have to be approached because the equipment is situated on lamp posts owned by them. All we can say at the moment is your Borough Councillors are working hard to get these cameras. So watch this space. On Going Issues Planning and Anti-Social behaviour (majority of it confidential) is still taking up a large amount of our time. Do not hesitate to contact us
local councillors will continue to watch this issue and to raise any concerns you have with Biffa. Shepshed Lions Club Community First Responders need your votes to stand a chance of securing significant support from the Aviva Community Fund. The Lions Club are aware from their work locally that many people are fearful of getting involved in a medical emergency, offering CPR and using a defibrillator. They want to implement a project called ‘CPR and Defibrillators - Dispel the Myths’ and raise public awareness and confidence in this area. You have until 21st November to vote and can vote for them by visiting this website: https://community-fund.aviva. co.uk/voting/project/view/17-1795 Finally, Trent Barton and East Midlands Airport have been pleased to announce that as part of the next timetable change affecting the Skylink services a 04.05 departure from Coalville has been added from 29th October, serving Shepshed at 4.23 and arriving at the airport at 04.39. Hopefully this will help lots more people access the airport for flights at the busiest part of the day. Similarly it should help those that are looking to start work shifts at this time.
should you have issues you wish to discuss with us. We shall continue to hold our regular monthly surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council offices, Charnwood Road, from 10-11am. No appointments are necessary. THERE WILL BE NO SURGERY THE FIRST SATURDAY IN DECEMBER.

County Councillor
Christine Radford
T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc. Cabinet Report 10th October 2017 A report was presented to Cabinet to seek it’s approval of the Council’s propose response to the East Midlands Rail Franchise consultation, to advise of the impact of the DfT announcement to cancel electrification of the Midland Mainline north of Kettering and to instead introduce bi-mode inter-city trains by 2022, and on the delivery of the priorities set out in the Leicester and Leicestershire Rail Strategy, and to re-affirm the Council’s position, in light of the this announcement, on the now confirmed route for HS2 Phase 2b.
Sam’s Big Ride The Big Ride came to Beacon Hill on Friday 22nd September, when Sam Orde, the National Chair of Riding for the Disabled took to the saddle to lead 36 disabled riders of all ages across the Beacon’s trails. This was another leg of her nationwide ride to raise money for the RDA Charity, and she helped us to celebrate Ashmount RDAs 35th birthday with this special event here in Leicestershire. The riders came from four local RDA groups, Wenlo and Ashmount (both based at Meadow School of Riding), Scropton (from South Derbyshire) and Kimberley House (based in Blaby). They were all sponsored, and the money raised is being sent to the national RDA to help to build a new facility for all to use – Lowlands Farm. It was wonderful to see how much joy riding can bring, especially in such beautiful countryside on a glorious Autumn day. Sam, not at all saddle sore after all the miles she has already put behind her, was full of praise and admiration for the riders and organisers. “What a wonderful day, you have all done yourselves and the RDA proud……..and thanks for introducing me to this quite beautiful area of Leicestershire”. Clarissa Howkins, chair of the North Midlands Regional RDA, also spoke of the “magnificent effort put in by so many people to make the day so successful…..in the end it is all about the disabled riders and their horses, and weren’t they all a bit special?” Nicky Morgan M.P, the Head of Ashmount Special School and Ed Bracher from RDA HQ presented rosettes to all the riders at the finishing line, in the Beacon Lower car park where everyone dismounted for welcoming cups of tea, bottles of pop, cakes and sandwiches. Thanks to Samworth Brothers Melton Foods, and Dilip’s Shepshed Multi-store for their contributions. The horses, mostly provided by Dawn Whitmore-Kirby’s Meadow School of Riding on Dean’s Lane, also enjoyed a well-earned carrot, munch of hay, and quite possibly the odd cake that just happened to slip through riders’ fingers while their backs were turned!
It was recommended that the Director of Environment and Transport be authorised to undertake work, as necessary, to make the case to the Department for Transport (DfT) to reverse its decision to cancel electrification of the Midland Main Line north of Kettering, and to enter into discussions with the DfT and other bodies, as necessary, to seek clarification and assurances in respect to concerns about future rail services on the Midland Mainline. A full report can be found by going onto the web site. http://politics.leics.gov. uk/ieListDocuments. aspx?Cid=135&Mid=4864&Ver=4 Buses Skylink - I am pleased to report that the Skylink bus is doing very well and that there are minor timetable alterations of no more than 10 minutes and there will be additional journeys at the following times; 4.23 am on Mon-Sat and 4.24 am on a Sun, this I understand is to tie in with shift patterns at the airport. Nine brand new buses have
joined the Skylink service. More than a million pounds has been invested by trentbarton in the new Enviro200 buses. They have LED lighting, visual and audio next-stop announcements, plus free Wi-Fi and USB power at every seat. 16/16A/X16 - the last 2 journeys on Mon-Sat, Coalville to L’Bor are now 10 minutes later. 126 – From Coalville to Leicester, the last journey now serves Loughborough Lemyngton Street, and all the times after Lemyngton Street on that journey have been adjusted by 8 minutes. 127 – At peak times, the frequency has been reduced from 12 minutes to 15 minutes. On a Sunday, the 23.08 journey from Shepshed has been removed. I am sorry that I have been unable to extend or increase buses to service the area off Lansdowne Road. Post Office Card Account Some residents have contacted me regarding a letter sent by the Department for Work & Pensions to them regarding payments they receive via the Post Office Card accounts and asking them to move to a bank, building society or credit union account. You do NOT have to move from a post office card account to a bank account. Therefore if you wish to remain as you are, may I suggest you let them know either by telephoning the number they provide or returning the form in the pre-paid envelope informing them of your preference. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or e mail christine_ radford@hotmail.com or christine. radford@leics.gov.uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road 10-11am. THERE WILL BE NO SURGERY THE FIRST SATURDAY IN DECEMBER.
