Charnwood Borough Council has appointed award-winning artist Jeni Cairns to create a life-sized model of Songster, who survived many trials and tribulations while serving in war and returned safely to the borough in 1919. The war horse will form part of the “Charnwood 14-18” commemoration events in Loughborough on November 11 which will also include the annual remembrance parade, a showcase event in the town centre and the unveiling of a heritage plaque. Jeni said: “I feel honoured to have been chosen to create Songster in conjunction with Charnwood Borough Council. The story about Songster is really touching and the World War One commemorations are so important to all of us. I’m really looking forward to seeing the life-size sculpture of Songster start to take shape.” Songster went to war in 1914 and served in France where he was awarded several medals for his bravery. He was the oldest war horse of the war, and the veteran passed away at home in Woodhouse Eaves in January 1940. Jeni, from Whittlesey near Peterborough, will use metal rods to create a three dimensional frame of Songster which will be moved through the town on November 11.The armature will feature plasma cut medals which were awarded to Songster for his bravery throughout the war.

Jeni is also a garden designer and works in a range of mediums including sculpture, painting and drawing. Her garden designs have won several awards including gold for best in show at RHS Hampton Court in 2016. Some of Jeni’s recent work includes designing and building a bicycle shelter for Sleaford Council and a sculpture for Ferry Meadows in Peterborough. The procession of Songster is just one of many events taking place in Loughborough on Sunday November 11, 2018. Other events include a tea dance at Loughborough Town Hall, the lighting of a beacon in Queen’s Park at 7pm as part of a nationwide scheme and the ringing of the Carillon bells. There will also be an exhibition at the town hall and Century of Stories at Charnwood Museum.

Shepshed Probus Club The September meeting of Shepshed Probus Club was held on the 3rd of the month at Junction 23 Truckstop. President Horace Lister welcomed members, our guest Carl Foulds and our speaker David Jones whose talk was on “Fun in the Fifties.” Mr Lister also read out a letter from Mike Ferguson, our June speaker who had donated his fee to the Mercy Ships who duly replied to Mike and the club to thank them. The Club Secretary conducted club business before Stan amused everyone with his humourous tales. Lunch was followed after Grace was said. After lunch David Jones got up to remind us about the fun we forgot we had in the 50’s. People talk about how bad the economy is now, forgetting how bad it was after the war. The country didn’t really recover until after the Queen’s coronation in 1953. Things were of course much different - people (gentlemen in the main) going to football matches, all wore caps and ties and violence did not occur. Very few women attended the matches. Children’s comics were Eagle, Beano and Dandy for the boys and Bunty for the girls. There was a Saturday morning picture show - Flash Gordon, Roy Rogers, Superman, Skippy and Shep. At home very few families had television in the so the whole family would listen to the radio and especially popular were The Goon Show, Educating Archie, Dick Barton Special Agent and The Archers. There were not many voluntary organisations for youngsters in the 50’s either apart from Scouts, Guides, St. John’s Ambulance Brigade and The Boys Brigade. Army Cadets were being re-formed along with Sea and Air Cadets. Mr Warrall produced “I Spy” books which are still popular today and in the 50’s you could go to Curry’s to buy toys like Muffin the Mule and Sooty. To cap it all, along came the Teddy Boys who were off-duty Guardsmen who were dressing up, Cecil Beaton the photographer, being the most flamboyant of them, so didn’t we have fun! Club members were given the opportunity to ask questions before the meeting closed.

Leicester Road Allotment Winners Presented With “Phil Cross Memorial Trophy” Shepshed Town Council are proud to support our allotment holders. It has been a tough summer and yet everyone has done their best. Terry and Michelle have done a wonderful job with lots of different plants which were imaginative and still thriving, well done. Terry and Michelle said “That it has been a tough year due to weather conditions, we were surprised to win the Phil Cross Memorial Trophy.Thank you to the Allotment Committee for their continued support, together with those who voted for our plot”

Local “Celebrant” Gains National Recognition Shepshed based Celebrant Richard Late has gained national recognition for his services to the Funeral Industry. Having officiated more than 100 funeral services across Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire since he started as an Independent Celebrant just some 10 months ago, Richard has now been nominated for an award within the National Celebrant Awards that will take place in Kettering. Richard says, “I simply can’t quite believe it, nominations were able to be made from the numerous Funeral Directors that I work with, as well as from the families for which I have delivered heartfelt services. I am thrilled just to have even received such a nomination” Richard who up until late last year was working predominantly within the wedding industry as a DJ and supplier of entertainment says that his change in career direction was sparked by a variety of events within both his personal and business life. He continues, “I started out with

some leaflets, created my website FuneralCelebrant.co.uk and it has just grown from there. I love the job I have now, I meet some amazing people and hear some incredible stories, which I often then get to tell at the service itself ” “Being an Independent Celebrant enables me to work alongside all Funeral Directors, offering personalised services

and ceremonies that reflect the life, personality and beliefs of a loved one, whether that be religious or non-religious. Every life is unique; every person is special, and I am always honoured to hear all about them whenever I meet with a family. Being there at someone’s time of need is truly a great privilege and hopefully my award nomination reflects my appreciation of this”.

Charnwood BRAS Praised For Helping The Reaccreditation Of Leicestershire Partnership Trust’s ‘Baby Friendly’ Status By Unicef UK Charnwood BRAS were praised for being a “great asset to the teamâ€?. Their “fantastic supportâ€? to parents and “invaluable contributionâ€? were recognised as helping Leicestershire Partnership Trust to receive positive feedback from Unicef. The Baby Friendly Initiative focuses on healthcare for babies, their mothers and families in the UK. It is part of a wider global partnership between the World Health Organization (WHO) and Unicef. The standards include: • Supporting pregnant women to recognise the importance of breastfeeding and early relationships for the health and wellbeing of their baby. • Enabling mothers to continue breastfeeding for as long as they wish. • Supporting mothers to make informed decisions regarding the introduction of food or fluids other than breastmilk. Paula Rowley, a peer supporter for Charnwood BRAS said “We are so proud to have been able to play an important role alongside the tireless work of our brilliant infant feeding team. All the BRAS are incredibly passionate about supporting parents and babies, and it’s fantastic to see our contribution recognised.â€? Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT)’s Breastfeeding Peer Support Programme was originally established in 2009, through funding from the local authority. It was set up to champion breastfeeding as the best choice, where possible, for parents and babies. LPT currently supports some 143 trained volunteers – all of whom have breastfed their own children, across seven geographical areas. Working closely with other breastfeeding organisations and colleagues at Children’s Centres, LPT’s peer supporters speak at ante-natal workshops, as well as running local support groups and providing on-the-spot advice to new mums via phone and social media.

Shepshed History Society Tuesday 11th of September the Shepshed History Society was entertained by Mr Robin Jenkins, an archivist at the Wigston Record Library when he explained all about the fascinating history of the Shirley Pedigree. This is a massive piece of art depicting the lineage of the Shirley family. Beginning in the 1500's it not only recorded the family's names but it also reproduced in great pictorial detail the numerous tombs the family occupied in the many village churches the Shirley estates embraced.

This awesome pedigree needed the skin of 55 sheeps skins to make and it needs 2 men to carry it. Its final resting place is now in the Wigston Record Library. The October meeting on Tuesday the 9th at 7.30pm will be given by Mrs Celia Sanger, her subject to be Sir John Gardner Wilkinson.

Shepshed Running Club On the 4th of November Shepshed RC will be holding their annual 7mile race around Garendon Park. As well as promoting our club we also fund raise for good causes. To be considered for a donation, any local charity or good cause must apply to us before the 13th of October. Applications to be made by email to paul.tebbutt@uptonsteel.com with ref Subject "SRC Good Causes" Presentation of the awards, to the successful applicants, will be held, if possible, on race day at 12.30pm at Shepshed High School.

Shepshed Foodbank Shepshed Foodbank has taken delivery of it’s very first consignment of food from FareShare -a charity aimed at relieving food poverty and reducing waste in the UK. It does this by working alongside all the major food retailers and redistributing good quality surplus food which would otherwise have gone to waste (food which is well inside its best before and use by dates) and sending it to over 7000 charity and community groups in the UK. Glennis Wilcox Chair of Shepshed Foodbank explained: "We are so very grateful to Cllr Adam Kowalczuk, of Kegworth Parish Council who has arranged this for us. Two local businessmen, Lavdosh Filaj of Adams Car Sales in Shepshed and Jason Matts of JSP Logistics in Kegworth have very kindly agreed to pay our weekly subscription so that we can receive regular FareShare deliveries. Our first delivery contained such a variety of food from fresh tomatoes, mushrooms and peppers to jars of pasta sauce and peanut butter! This will enable us to offer so much more choice to the ever-growing number of people using our service. We just can’t thank them enough!"

Shepshed Ramblers will next walk on Sunday 21st October departing Shepshed Market Place at 09.30 for an Autumn Mystery Walk.

Iveshead School Interact Club Bingo Evening For Steps

Small Change: Big Steps Steps is a charity-funded centre in Shepshed which works with children who have motor disorders, enabling them to lead fuller, more active lives. Steps also provides a vital life-line for the children’s families. A group of students participating in the National Citizenship Services (NCS) in Burton chose Steps as their charity to devise fund and awareness raising for, as part of their civic action project. A range of activities was undertaken to raise money, including a sponsored leg-wax, a sponsored walk from Burton to Barton, a sponsored car wash and a tombola stall on Burton market. One of the team members posted on the ‘I Love Swadlincote’ face book page, encouraging people to donate on their Go Fund Me page. Keith Large, an avid Burton Albion supporter, saw this appeal and contacted the NCS group. He said that he had a big jar of coins which he had been collecting for many years and he was looking for a charity to donate to. Keith arranged to take his money pot for the students to count, thinking it probably contained around £300. Imagine how thrilled everyone was to discover that there was actually almost £900 in the pot! The students got in touch with Burton Albion with their story and the club contacted Keith, inviting him to meet the players, have a tour of the stadium, watch a match

from a box and enjoy a four-course meal afterwards! Group-member, Isaac Munslow, told this amazing story to his neighbour (who wishes to remain anonymous). The neighbour told Isaac that he had an old box of money which he had been throwing small change into over the years, saying that he could have it for Steps. It took Isaac several hours to count the money as it totaled almost £1200!! Soon the word spread about these two amazing acts of generosity and another Steps supporter contacted Isaac, saying that he had been throwing loose change into an old jam pan and that he could have it to add to his collection. The coins in the jam pan added up to £100! Isaac and his cousin, Janet Russell, who is the centre manager at Steps, began to wonder how many other people were hoarding pots, pans and jars of coins. Janet said, “There might be more people in the area who have similar collections of small change and who have never got round to sorting, bagging and lugging it to the bank." "We should love to hear from anyone who would like to donate their coin collections to Steps." Please contact me on 01509 506878 or by email: info@ stepscentre.org.uk Remember, small change equals big Steps!

Earlier in the year Iveshead School Interact Club hosted a Bingo Evening in aid of STEPS which is a Conductive Education Centre based in Shepshed. It teaches an innovative learning process which focuses on the child being able to take control and also communicate with those around them. The night was a huge success with many people from the Public coming to support the event and we also managed to raise £212 for STEPS. Interactor Jake Kinsey speaking on behalf of the Club said “I would like to thank all the members of the Public who were in attendance on the night because if it wasn’t for you it would not of been able to happen. We would also like to mention the following businesses for their generous donations of raffle prizes which helped to contribute to the overall total raised. These are as follows: ShearDesire,The Sun, Meat n Eat and Strawberry House Interiors, and the Shepshed Rotary Club. Overall it was a brilliant night and we look forward to hosting many more similar events in the future."

Shepshed And District Twinning Special Promotional Event After Carnival Success After our attendance at Shepshed Charity Carnival we succeeded in attracting several visitors interested in our activities - in fact there were so many that a special event is being organised for them. On October 27th we are holding a Raclette Evening. Typically French, it includes good food, but Raclette originated in Switzerland. It involves melting Swiss cheese to your preferred consistency on a special grill and then adding it to small boiled potatoes and garnishing it with fine ham, and other goodies to your taste, whilst having fun conversation with your co Racletteers, and getting exposure to things French. Its origin was the hill farmers and shepherds near the French border, so look forward to a hearty meal, all helped down with whatever takes your fancy, and get to know more about the fun of Twinning. At the Carnival there was quite a buzz both around our stand. Our quizzes were popular, although not everybody found them easy!.. But there was

compensation - super prizes including Sheppy bookmarks, Sheppy mugs, and our Sheppy stickers were a big hit. Some of our older members dropped in and reminisced about the good times that they had had visiting friends in Domont, and one wanted our help to be reunited with her penfriend of some years ago. Not least, visitors had the opportunity to meet our mascot, Sheppy the Sheep, who seemed to be very laid back for the whole of the afternoon. They could also hear about how Shepshed and District Twinning gets people in touch with real French people… without having to speak French!

County Cllr Christine Radford T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com

As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc. The Introduction Of Average Speed Cameras I wrote back in March about the introduction of an average speed camera pilot scheme which was being undertaken. I wish to report that these cameras have now been switched on. Below I have listed again the roads which have these cameras on them. A50 Bradgate Hill Groby, B676 Saxby Road, Freeby, Burton Road Measham, A6 Harborough Road, Glen Road Oadby, B4114 Leicester Road, Sharnford,A4304 Lutterworth Road, Walcote and Beacon Road Woodhouse Eaves. Recycling And Household Waste Site County are due to commence capital works on the Loughborough site on 1st October and the site will be closed from then until late December.

Council employees. Cameras have been provided to gain evidence of criminal activity and unacceptable behaviour as well as acting as a deterrent to potential offenders encouraging potential offenders to regulate their behaviour and reducing the risk of incidents escalating. This is fully supported by staff and their union colleagues. County will be undertaking a pilot exercise between August 2018 and February 2019 to establish whether the use of body worn cameras is effective. The cameras will be trialled by gangs working on the highway, recycling and household waste sites and staff from County’s infrastructure planning team who do site and home visits in relation to flood risk management and planning/ development applications. Resident Raised Concerns Following concerns raised by residents regarding the markings on the speed bumps in Loughborough Road and Forest Street I can report that County have agreed that the markings do need to be refreshed. A works order has been placed with their lining contractors and the works are anticipated to be completed within the next few weeks (weather permitting). Following concerns raised by residents who live in Cambridge Street and Oxford Street regarding the state of the trees. I am pleased that the trees in Cambridge Street have been attend to and been given assurance that Oxford Street will be attended too before the end of the year.

This will mean more people will be using Shepshed and Mountsorrel. The Shepshed site will be having works carried out sometime in the New Year when it will be closed. This is to improve drainage to secure compliance with permit regulations. The work will include the provision of a sealed drainage system to the lower yard and some resurfacing work to the site. I shall report at a later date with dates when this will be carried out and when the site will be closed. Top Of Charnwood Road With Its Junction At The A512 I have had meetings with officers from County to discuss the issues at the above junction following the realignment of the white lines. It has been agreed that better linage and signage will be installed at this junction and at the bottom of Iveshead Road and on the A512, but the directions of the traffic will stay as the amendment. Turn left only in the left hand lane, turn right and straight over in the right hand lane. I have asked them to take a further look at how the road is sinking at the bottom of Iveshead Road as I have concerns in this area. New Developments I wish to bring to the attention of residents who have recently moved in to a new property. As part of the planning conditions a sustainable Travel contribution was agreed. Therefore you should have received a travel and passes pack. If you haven’t been given this information, contact the developer or speak to the information office on the site, or contact me. Woodland Trust In partnership with the Woodland Trust, Leicestershire County Council are giving away tree packs across the county to farmers and landowners which have been specifically designed to help regenerate countryside that is under threat from tree diseases such as Ash Dieback. These packs are available to applicants from across the county, Each pack includes 45 native trees and applicants can chose from two different species mixes: Mix 1 – birch, hornbeam and oak Mix 2 – birch, oak and wild cherry. All the trees come with 1.2m tree tubes and stakes. To register for your free pack of trees please email plant@woodlandtrust.og.uk with your name and contact details or call 0330 333 5303 making sure you quote ‘Leicestershire County Council trees’. The dead line for applications is 31st October 2018. Body Worn Camera-Pilot Because of an increase in the number of abuse, threats and near misses to

I received concerns regarding the cross roads at Anson Road/Charnwood Road/Oxford Street with the increase in traffic following the closure of Tickow Lane. I approached County to give consideration in placing 4 way lights at this junction. County response was the use of any temporary traffic management on a diversion route tends to lead to a large number of customer enquiries and complaints, which would no doubt happen in this situation. I have received a large number of complaints about the HGV’s going to and from the building sites due to their speed and the routes they are taking. Unfortunately HGV’s can enter the weight restriction area if delivering within this area. I have asked County to undertake a speed check on Anson Road and Lansdowne Road. It would help both myself and County if registration numbers and the names on the side of these vehicles could be noted and I will pass these on to the appropriate authorities. Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such as overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com or christine.radford@leics.gov.uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road 10-11am.

Shepshed Town Council’s Dog Control Subcommittee Shepshed Town Council’s Dog Control Subcommittee continues to meet on a regular basis with the Dog Warden from College Garth to monitor parks and open spaces under the control of Shepshed Town Council. The last meeting received a report from the Dog Warden which received very positive feedback on the areas he had monitored. However, as the nights begin to draw in, some (only a small minority) Dog Owners appear to become complacent and tend to only walk their dog for shorter periods of time and very often the footpaths appear to become increasingly littered by dog fouling, therefore, an appeal/reminder is sent requesting that no matter time of day/night or time of the year, it is, it is still an offence not clean up after your dog. Dog fouling issues can be reported directly to Charnwood Borough Council via the following link www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/report_a_dog_problem

Warning For Landlords Over New HMO Law Landlords in Charnwood are being warned to make sure they are complying with new laws around Houses of Multiple Occupation (HM0). The new rules which came into force on October 1st 2018 stated that a licence is required for HMOs of any size where there are five or more people forming two or more households where facilities are shared. The law change essentially means more properties will need to be licensed and it is the duty of landlords to comply. To find out more, or to apply for a HMO licence please visit www.charnwood. gov.uk/register_hmo_licences or phone 01509 634651. Search Is On For This Year’s Community Heroes In Charnwood Residents have been urged to nominate community heroes who do small things to make a real difference in Charnwood. Charnwood are working in partnership with John Storer Charnwood to recognise the great work people are doing for the benefit of others.

Charnwood decided to set up a lottery to further support the local voluntary and community sector. A number of groups have already signed up, below are the groups who have links with Shepshed. Shepshed Special Community Bus, Shepshed volunteer Bureau, Glenmore Centre, Shepshed Dolphins Swimming Group, Above and Beyond and Shepshed Toy Library. (These are all at the time of going to press) To buy a ticket please visit www.charnwoodlottery.go.uk and you will be asked to create an account. When a participant chooses to support one of the registered charities or good causes, the organisation will receive a 50p donation, with 10p going towards a central community fund, if no charity is chosen; all 60p goes to the community fund. The council will use the community fund to support local projects and good causes through its grants scheme. Bring Site Starting To Be Removed The process to remove bring sites across Charnwood has started in a move which will save taxpayers around £20,000 a year. As reported last month Charnwood announced earlier to remove 79 glass and aluminium banks at a number of locations. But we can confirm that re-cycled bags can be collected at the front desk at Southfields, or request via the website. Your Borough Cllrs are trying to get a supply left at the Town Council offices in Shepshed. If the correct bags are not used for recycling when left next to the green recycling bins they will not be collected. Cllr Joan Tassell We are pleased to report that Cllr Tassell has been made Chairman of the Member Conduct panel having been vice-chairman for a number of years. This Committee looks at the constitution by which all members of Charnwood and the Town and Parish Councils work. It also deals with complaints by the public on Councillors. This is the first time that a Shepshed Cllr has been given a senior responsibility at Charnwood and we are of the opinion that it is about time that the work of the Shepshed Cllrs is recognised. On-Going Issues Planning and Anti-Social behaviour (majority of it confidential) is still taking up a large amount of our time. Do not hesitate to contact us should you have issues you wish to discuss with us. We shall continue to hold our regular monthly surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council offices, Charnwood Road, from 10-11am. No appointments are necessary. Reasons for nominating a hero could include volunteering at a local community group, keeping the area tidy by litter picking or befriending vulnerable people who live in the area. They could be someone who fetches a few items from the shop for a neighbour, actively keeps the local area tidy or supports a voluntary group.

Charnwood Community Lottery Residents are being urged to take a chance and make a difference by supporting Charnwood Community Lottery which was launched on 4th September. Tickets for the lottery, which is being run by the borough council are now on sale and will help raise money for good causes, charities and voluntary organisations. For every £1 ticket, 60p will go towards helping a good cause and players can win up to £25,000. The lottery also means people can choose to help a specific group, perhaps one that’s close to their hearts. Charnwood hopes the lottery is empowering for the

Please come along and find out what the Community Bus is all about and see if there is anything we could do to help your group, club or an individual that has problems getting out and about, we do regular shopping trips and go on various outings throughout the year. This enables people with mobility, transport, health problems or even loneliness to enjoy the things in life that so many of us take for granted. Your support means so much to all the users of the Community Bus, it is a lifeline to so many people, so we need to keep using it to help these people live a happy and independent life.

Shepshed Scaresheep Festival Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October 2018. Back by enormous popular request.

As I mentioned in my last Shepshed Eye column the Loughborough Wellbeing Café Project has started to work with the Changes group in Shepshed. The Café operates as a drop in to support those facing mental health challenges. Refreshments and fun games and activities are available. The group continues to meet at the Glenmore Centre between 1pm and 3pm on Wednesday afternoons. Details can be found on Facebook – just search ‘Loughborough Wellbeing’.

We are holding our fourth sheep-themed scarecrow type event to raise funds for Shepshed Volunteer Centre. Residents and businesses will be taking part in the competition by creating a display in their front window or front garden. The trophies awarded will be for the best Business/Organisation and the best Household Scare Sheep voted for by the public and the best Business/ Organisation judged by Shepshed Town Councillors.

I was delighted to pop into the first joint afternoon at the end of August. Thank you to everyone who was there for a warm welcome – and a cake! Carers and support workers are welcome to attend too.

The Scaresheep Programmes will be on sale from the Volunteer Centre, Dilips Multistore, Meet ‘n’ Eat and Shepshed Library from 1st October for £3 per family group, will include a map to help you find the entries and your voting paper to help decide the best Shepshed Scare Sheep.

I was also very pleased to visit Campbell Scientific in Shepshed recently. It was good to hear about their business, the software they develop and the sophisticated products and sensors for measuring thing such as the weather that they manufacture – much of which is exported to Europe. As is so often the case in Shepshed and beyond I found a really innovative and world-leading company quietly and impressively getting on with things on our doorstep. I hold regular meetings with local farmers and my latest meeting, organised by the local branch of the National Farmers Union, was held at Spring Barrow Lodge on Swannymote Road. A lot of my job as an MP is hearing views based on local experience and expertise on what the Government is proposing. In this case the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has recently published a draft Agriculture Bill which will be going through the House of Commons soon. Hearing the views of those working in agriculture on this important piece of legislation is really useful. Of course, farming is one of the sectors which will be most affected by Brexit. It was also useful to hear about the impact of our unusually dry summer on everyone’s farms. Finally, as many Eye readers will know, I also chair the Treasury Select Committee in the House of Commons. Our work is very varied but one of the areas we have been focusing on recently is the resilience of the online operations of our major banks. As more branches close and we are all expected to use online banking and payments systems more we have been and will continue to ask questions when the systems go down and customers are left high and dry.

Our Hopes And Dreams For Shepshed We loved being part of the Lions Carnival in Glenmore Park. The atmosphere was vibrant. People were greeting old friends and chatting to each other. We were new stallholders and everyone was very welcoming and supportive. We wanted to give an opportunity for people in Shepshed to talk about living in the town and to share their hopes and dreams for the community. We invited people to write their ideas on ‘leaves’ and hang them on our ‘Tree of Prayer’. Fifty-one leaves were written on and seventy ideas were expressed. Many more folks stopped to chat: memories were shared, opinions voiced, concerns raised and positive aspirations discussed together. We have collated an overview of people’s responses. Overall, people were happy to live in Shepshed, remarking on how caring people are and how friendly our community is. Common themes raised included people’s hopes for a greater variety of attractive shops in the centre of town, alongside a desire for a more central community facility; around a tenth wished for the reassurance of police on the beat whilst a similar amount wished for services and facilities to increase in proportion to the demand placed on the town by more housing. A further tenth of responses reflected a desire to see better leisure facilities, especially more opportunities to use the swimming pool. Projects and facilities to engage young people were high on the agenda: over a quarter of responses expressed hopes for our children and teenagers. Projects like the Passion were highly commended. A number expressed hopes for ongoing improvement to park equipment, whilst others dreamt of our young people having more to do to help connect them into the community. Specific hopes were for young people with autism to make better connections; making the town even more disabled-friendly; Children’s Services to remain easily accessible to local families. Other dreams included improvements to road systems and better kept pathways; more waste and dog bins; more funding for a second Community Bus and to keep the library operating; more for the elderly to do and improved social togetherness. Finally came a dream for peace and love! We are aware that there are many community initiatives already in place, some hopes are a work in progress and some dreams are just difficult to deliver! However, it is our hope that many of these expressed ideas and desires will become part of our town’s future.

There will be letters at each of the gardens which will spell a sheep related phrase, collect them all and work out the phrase to be entered into our prize draw. So why not get the family together to view the displays around Shepshed and vote for your favourite. Please put completed entries through the volunteer centre door before 12th October to be entered into the prize draw.

Christchurch G&S Ready To Cast Their Spell Tickets are now on sale for Christchurch Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s forthcoming production of The Mikado. This is one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most-performed comic operettas and Sullivan’s well-known score includes ‘Three Little Maids’, ‘A Wand’ring Minstrel I’, ‘The Madrigal’, ‘The Sun Whose Rays’ and ‘Here’s a how-de-do’. This production has been given a 1920s black and white setting but the score and storyline remain unchanged. The Mikado is set in the town of Titipu where the Lord High Executioner Ko-Ko and his three wards,Yum-Yum, Pitti-Sing and Peeb-Bo reside. Ko-Ko is in love with Yum-Yum and they are due to marry but the wand’ring minstrel Nanki-Poo – really the son of The Mikado in disguise – has returned to Titipu to claim Yum-Yum, whom he loves. Meanwhile, The Mikado of Japan has ruled that, due to a lack of executions in Titipu, unless there is one within a month, the town will have its status reduced to that of a village, which would have terrible consequences. When Nanki-Poo’s hopes of marrying Yum-Yum are dashed by Ko-Ko, he is distraught and prepares to end his life but the cunning Ko-Ko strikes a deal with him; he can wed Yum-Yum if at the end of one month he is prepared to be beheaded! Nanki-Poo agrees and the town prepare for the wedding of Nanki-Poo and Yum-Yum. The arrival of Katisha, an elder lady from the court of The Mikado, with more than a soft spot for Nanki-Poo, threatens to throw a spanner in the works but no-one is interested in her revelations about the true identity of Nanki-Poo. When Yum-Yum discovers the fate that awaits her if Nanki-Poo is executed

she no longer agrees to marry NankiPoo, putting pay to Ko-Ko’s plans. With the imminent arrival of The Mikado an execution is needed quickly. Will Ko-Ko avoid execution himself? Will Katisha’s advances be returned by anyone and will Nanki-Poo and YumYum live happily ever after? Adrian Dobson is making his directorial debut with the group, having returned to the society last year to play the male principal lead in The Sorcerer; Kate King is Musical Director.Valerie Hart and Steve Gale play the romantic leads of Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo with Alison Matthews and Sam Baguley completing the line-up of little maids. Allister Jordan is Ko-Ko with Cheryl Hammersley as the formidable Katisha and Mike Jones, Richard Tomlinson and Roger Muggleton take on the roles of The Mikado, Pish-Tush and Pooh-Bah respectively. The Mikado is at Iveshead School Theatre, Shepshed (formerly Hind Leys College), from Tuesday 6th to Saturday 10th November. Performances are at 7.30pm Tuesday to Friday with a Saturday matinee only at 2.30pm. Tickets are £12 (£6 for children) and are available through society members or by calling Margaret on 01509 504376.
