Shepshed History Society
Shepshed Ramblers
September 10th Mr Clive Katz gave the Shepshed History Society a very interesting insight into the history of Lindesfarne Castle which was built in 1565. This famous castle sits on what is commonly known as Holy Island, Berwick on Tweed with a ruined priory nearby that is owned by English Heritage. Sitting on a extinct volcano the castle itself is now owned by the National Trust and is open to the general public. However access to it is by a causeway so it is important to take note of the time of the tides, unfortunately many people have been caught out when the tide comes in over the years and there is a shed on stilts in which to take shelter. Numerous owners have owned it over the years and it has had many very famous guests, even royalty. Gertrude Jekyll the well known garden designer designed the walled garden which is still in pristine condition. Many slides were shown of the tastefullly furnished interior as well as many photos of unusual artefacts, like a large manual wooden log carrier that is strapped to the back for some poor underpaid servant. It was a fascinating evening that might well entice visitors to make the journey to see this splendid edifice standing proudly out at sea. The October meeting on the 8th will be given by Mrs Karen Kreft the subject to be 'The Servants downstairs at Calke Abbey' Everyone welcome at Glenmore Centre for 7.30pm.
Shepshed Ramblers will next walk on Sunday 20 October. It is approximately a six mile circular walk ‘Doing The Rounds’ from Ticknall to Foremark Reservoir and back. The Ramblers will leave Shepshed Market Place at 09.30 am and return between 2.30 and 3.00 pm. Walkers should take a coffee break and lunch. For further information call Margaret on 01509 600510 or Bernie on 01509 828328. A warm welcome to newcomers is guaranteed.

Shepshed Lions Carnival What a Scorcher Article by Ann Bodycote
The tenth Shepshed Lions Carnival took place on the hottest August Bank Holiday on record, and more than 3,000 people came along to make the most of the weather and enjoy the show. Councillors Joan Tassel and Ian Williams, Chairman and ViceChairman of Shepshed Town Council, opened the event. Then entertainer Mad Dom kept everyone amused throughout the afternoon and organised a kids and parents tug-of-war, while Dangerous Steve amazed us with his dare-devil stunts involving motorbikes, fire and chain saws. Punch and Judy and the fairground rides were as popular as ever, there were sixty trade and charity stalls, and a Caribbean steel band provided a live soundtrack. Lion President Bill Holland said, "The Carnival is the culmination of months of work by members of Shepshed Lions Club, and when we see the great support we have had today from the people of Shepshed, it is all worthwhile. Special thanks must go to the local businesses that sponsor the event, including Fred Sherwood and Sons Transport, Loughborough Building Society, Michelmersh Brick, Newbolds Flooring, Primo IT, Bill Cooling Meats, and many of the shops in the town. Also, Shepshed Town Council allow us the use of Glenmore Park for the day. Without support from all of these people and members of Loughborough Lions Club, Shepshed Carnival simply couldn’t happen. Every penny of profit made from Carnival will be given to charitable causes, mostly local, including our annual lunch and bingo for senior citizens, which is coming up in October."

The Probus Club Article by Horace Lister
Belton Playgroup and Afterschool Club Article by Samantha Dexter
We are a small village run playgroup and after school club in Belton – with big ideas! We are just a few miles from Shepshed and are located close to the new East Midlands Gateway and A42. We have grown from a small few hours a week playgroup, to opening every day and now offer a breakfast club and an after-school club. Our aim is to provide a warm and caring environment to stimulate children and encourage them to learn and develop through play. All of our fun, friendly staff are level 3 qualified or above. The playgroup takes children from the age of 18 months, and our after-school club takes children up to year 6. At playgroup, we do lots of exciting things, and no two days are ever the same. We really enjoy playing outside, whatever the weather. This term we have installed a new gravel pit, for trucks and diggers. We also have a new shed, so that the children can access their own bikes, scooters and toys themselves. On Fun Filled Fridays, we often go to play in the woods, or go on exciting adventures – we’ve even been on a train ride! Inside, we have loose parts, los of physical activities, small world areas and craft. As the children learn through play, we teach them how to be independent and how to get along with their friends. Our new after school club runs until 6pm (5.30 on Wednesdays), and is perfect for working parents. We also offer theme nights, so if your child has a particular interest, they may just come to those nights. We are very excited to offer a new Parent and Baby Group. This will be from 2pm-3pm, running from 24th October for 6 weeks. Costs will be £3.50 per session, or if you book the whole 6 weeks, just £15. We will include information such as the importance of play, sensory play, loose parts play and physical play. Please see our website beltonplaygroup.co.uk, follow us on Facebook, or call Sam on 07761 836983.

The President welcomed a very reduced number of members (12 in number), probably caused by holiday arrangements, and our in house speaker. Apologies for absence were received from Fred Ing, Phillip Moore, Albert Grimes, Roger Smith, Roger Haycock, and Stan White. Our Secretary Wilf Shelton gave notice of his desire to quit the post of Secretary with immediate notice, due to failing health It so happens that a couple of weeks ago, one of our members [ Graham Woodward ] offered to take over as Secretary for a 3 year stint, after undergoing a period of supervision, however, with immediate effect, he has become Secretary of the club. Wilf went on to say that he had arranged the annual luncheon, including entertainment, menus etc. The past President then thanked Wilf for all the effort which he had expended over the dozen years since he succeeded Stan White, and wished him all the luck in the world for the future and that he would continue to support us with his presence for years to come. Due to Stan White's absence, we were starved of our monthly injection of humour. Grace was said by the President, followed by another lovely lunch, in the form of liver and onions. The raffle draw was made, and even though the attendees only numbered 12, the value of the prizes remained the same, and appropriately, the winner turned out to be our retiring Secretary. Horace Lister then gave a very enlightening talk on his tour of the North Island of New Zealand, explaining that he had chosen to describe his tour as half of the original, which would have taken too long, causing members to fall asleep prematurely. He described the highlights from landing in Auckland, and driving north to Rotorua, where he and his wife had distant relations, but upon meeting found that they were not too distant after all, as they compared the same wedding photographs of Elsa's parents. From Rotorua they travelled up the Coromandel Peninsula, and further north to the Bay of Islands, where the Maori and Settlers finally signed the peace treaty of 1870. Travelled then south to lake Taupo, which is the largest lake in New Zealand, and finally back to Auckland, where from the SKY TOWER whilst having lunch, witnessed without warning, several bungie jumpers free falling past the revolving glass windows. Finally flying out of New Zealand, to continue their holiday in Singapore. The talk, even though witnessed by 12 members was well received.

Prostate Enlargement, A Pressing Matter Article by Gary Trickett
Christchurch G&S Ready To Hit The Stage Article by Rachel Fitzpatrick
Last year it was 1920s Japan for their black and white setting of The Mikado, this year it’s a more familiar setting of Cornwall for Christchurch G&S Society as they prepare to bring Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operetta Ruddigore to the stage this November. Full of Sullivan’s satirical wit and observations of British society (which still hold true all these years on) and set to Gilbert’s sparkling score, Ruddigore is something of a hidden gem among Gilbert and Sullivan’s numerous works. From the dramatic When the night wind howls, to the comic I once was a very abandoned person, the beautiful duet There grew a little flower and the wonderful harmonies of choral numbers like When the buds are blossoming, Ruddigore shows Gilbert at his very best. The action takes place in a fictional Cornish village, where the professional corps of bridesmaids – the only village to have such a thing – are bemoaning their lengthy wait for a wedding; all because the village’s men are too shy to approach the prettiest maiden, Rose Maybud. Amongst the men’s number is Robin Oakapple. With the arrival of Robin’s foster brother, the sailor Richard Dauntless, love eventually blossoms for Robin and Rose only for Sir Despard to unveil Robin as the rightful heir to the cursed title of the Baronet of Ruddigore! As such Robin – or Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd – must perform a crime every day or die. Rose is left heartbroken…but not for long as she decides to wed Richard instead! As Sir Ruthven adjusts to his new wicked lifestyle his ancient ancestors, in ghostly form, ensure that his behaviour is bad enough to escape their wrath and save him from death…but can he find a way to free himself of the curse and get his bride back? Father and daughter duo Richard Perkins and Cheryl Hammersley are sharing the Director’s chair for this production with support from Musical Director Kate King. Allister Jordan tackles the dual role of Robin Oakapple/Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd with Richard Tomlinson as his foster brother Richard Dauntless and Rachel Fitzpatrick caught in the middle of the love triangle as Rose Maybud. They are ably supported by Matthew Hammersley and Alison Matthews as the unlikely and humorous pairing of Sir Despard and Mad Margaret, Adrian Dobson as the ancestor Sir Roderic Murgatroyd, Sue Smith as Dame Hannah and Roger Muggleton as Sir Ruthven’s faithful servant Old Adam. Other roles are played by Lisa Grant, Rachel Cousen, Sam Baguley, Valerie Hart, Eddie Atkins, Mike Jones and John Cousen. Ruddigore is at Iveshead School Theatre, Shepshed (formerly Hind Leys College), from Wednesday 6th to Saturday 9th November. Performances are at 7.30pm Wednesday to Friday with a Saturday matinee only at 2.30pm. Tickets are £12 (£6 for children) and are available through society members or by calling Margaret on 01509 504376.

Prostate disorders affect over 50% of men over the age of fifty and almost all men over the age of eighty. The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located below the bladder. It surrounds the urethra which drains the bladder. As men get older the prostate gland starts to enlarge, slowly squashing the urethra and reducing the amount of space available for urine to pass through. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) occurs when the prostate grows to an unhealthy size, causing difficulty and discomfort for men when urinating. Symptoms can also be confused with prostatitis, a simpler inflammation of the prostate, often caused by bacteria. The main symptoms of BPH are urinating frequently, difficulty in getting a urine stream going and feeling as if you are unable to empty your bladder properly. Although not life-threatening, it’s not much fun. However before you think about treatment you do need an official diagnosis from your doctor so as to rule out a more serious condition. Once prostate enlargement has been confirmed you may wish to try a Saw Palmetto supplement. Prostasan Saw Palmetto capsules from A. Vogel can help to relieve urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate. Men taking prescribed medicines for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) or other hormonal imbalances should consult their GP before taking Saw Palmetto. Zinc is also important. Zinc is more abundant in the prostate than anywhere else in the body and deficiency is common in men with prostate problems. Supplementing with zinc or topping up on foods rich in zinc (these include black pepper, oysters, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and flax seeds) can help to ensure you get an adequate supply. For further advice, visit Gary and his team at Healthy Route, 18 Silver Street, Leicester.
Shepshed Cancer Social Support Group Article by Sue Bartram
The Shepshed Cancer Social Support Group has made a small but strong start. We do not spend our time together talking about illness, doom & gloom. We chat, laugh, drink tea, eat biscuits & sometimes cake, if Marion has been baking! We have a regular volunteer who does manicures & gives hand & arm massages. We are going to be having gentle exercise sessions delivered by an ex-sports teacher. We are hoping to be able to plan trips. We had a visitor from Vista who gave us a very interesting insight to the difficulties experienced by people with impaired sight. The Vista visitor also advised us about protecting our own vision. We have a small core group of attendees, male & female. However, we would really like to see more people attending. If you decide to give us a try, you can be assured of a warm welcome. 1 in 2 people will experience Cancer. You do not have to be a person with cancer to come to the group. We are all touched by it in some way, whether it’s a loved one, friend, colleague, neighbour. If this applies to you, call in for a cuppa! The group meets at 1.30pm, on the first Tuesday of every month at Shepshed Town Council Community Centre, (opposite Tesco Express), Charnwood Road, Shepshed.

Seven Weeks Left For Bargain Will Writing Article by Peter Ralphs
With the Campaign ending next month, the ‘phone lines at Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland are buzzing, with hundreds of older people wanting to make sure that they do not miss out on the annual Will Writing Promotion organised by the Charity. Twenty-seven offices of local solicitors have kindly agreed to reduce their Will Writing charge to just £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will, but the offer runs only until the end of October. This price represents a saving of more than £100 in most cases. Commenting, the Business Development Manager of the local Age UK, Peter Ralphs, said: “We are delighted that so many people have responded to the promotion. Many older people have never been to a solicitor before, with some feeling intimidated at the prospect. The special offer has acted as an incentive and given many people the confidence they have needed to put their affairs in order – ensuring that those who will benefit from their estate are the people they most care for. Some have even been kind enough to include much-needed legacies or given donations to our charity, though there is no pressure so to do.” Anyone wishing to take advantage of the Will Writing Promotion should contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland to find out the names of the Solicitors participating in the scheme in their local area on 0116 2992233.

For A Question Of Brains Article by Janet Russell
A charity dinner with a difference raising celebrates 25 years of Steps A corporate dinner combined with a quiz night is to be held at Leicester Tigers on Tuesday 8th October to raise funds for children’s charity, Steps. Celebrating 25 years of transforming special little lives, Steps supports very young children from overall the East Midlands who live with cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome and other motor disorders. The ‘A Question of Brains’ event is organised by Leicestershire diet and fitness guru Rosemary Conley who is also Patron of the Shepshed-based charity. "Steps needs £250,000 a year to be able to offer help and support to the special children who attend Steps. The results achieved by the specialist staff is astonishing and it is vital that we are able to continue to offer this support free of charge to the children who attend Steps" says Rosemary. The event will be hosted by BBC East Midlands Today presenter Anne Davies and guests will have the chance to win a £4000 Rolex watch donated by Goldsmiths and numerous other exciting prizes including a chauffeur driven day out in a Bentley with afternoon tea at the Dorchester and a trip to a West End theatre. There is also a mega-tombola and the organisers are asking local companies for any gifts they can offer. Says Rosemary, "If you have some of last year’s stock, or goods in slightly damaged boxes, we can use those on the tombola and raise valuable funds for Steps." Because of sponsorship from Next, Fischer Future Heat, Charles Street Buildings and Leicester Tigers, all the costs of the event are covered so every £ raised on the evening will go directly to Steps. Now in its eighth year, A Question of Brains has raised a combined total of over £450,000 for the charity. To book tickets or to donate prizes please call Steps on 01509 506878 or Peter Legg on 01530 249396 or go to www.aquestionofbrains.org

Jumbo Jumble Sale At Shepshed
St Botolph’s Runs Messy Church
Article by Anne Wightman
It’s that time of year again when the people of St Botolph’s Church, Shepshed ask you to ‘Delve in your drawers, Search your sheds, Clean out your cupboards, Wade in your wardrobes and Attack the attic’. Bric-a-brac, kitchen utensils, books, clothes, tools, china and glass are all acceptable, providing they are in good condition. Once again your unwanted goods are required to sell. The Jumbo Jumble Sale is to be held in the Church Hall, Church Gate from 10.00am until 12 noon on Saturday 26th October. Items may be brought to the hall on the previous day (Friday 25th) between 2.00pm and 4.00pm. Refreshments will be available, and fun can be had trying on in the nearly new ‘department’, where a mirror will be placed for use. Child related items will be very acceptable, toys and clothing, as long as they are in good condition. This is the sixth such event, and in the past it has attracted people from quite a distance. The organisers have been delighted both by the quality of the goods donated for sale, the numbers who came, and the financial result. Proceeds are for church funds. St Botolph’s is a very active, alive church within the Shepshed community. It is hoped that this year’s event will be just as successful. Every year there is a huge quantity of goods remaining after the event, which is gladly accepted by a worthy cause. Nothing is wasted! Do come along!

The Black Swan Article by Steve White
Music in Shepshed? The Black Swan is the place. Firstly there’s the Shepshed Mucky Duck Ukulele Club. Ukuleles are cheap (basic ones are anyway) and it’s quite easy to learn to play simple tunes. They’re a friendly and welcoming bunch and it’s great fun. There’s a Tuesday group and a Wednesday one. The Folk Club started in the Britannia around 12 years ago. After the pub closed (it wasn’t our fault!) we eventually ended up in the Black Swan, Keith being a big fan of live music. Folk Club is a misleading term- any sort of music is welcome, and poetry features regularly. We also laugh rather a lot! Acoustic sessions is a much more accurate description. And it’s another friendly bunch! Our sessions are held on the third Friday of the month, starting around 8:30, 18th October, 15th November and 20th December being the next ones . Sing, play, or just watch and listen, stay as long as you like. Then there are the occasional Saturday night singalongs with Steve (that’s me!) and friends, singing 60s stuff mainly, but there’s folk song, kids’ songs and pretty much anything that can be played on an acoustic guitar. Next event is 26th October.

Charitable Fundraising At Christchurch Breakfast before Church (BBC) recommenced following the Summer Break on Sunday 1st September when £140 was raised for the Passion Youth Project. The BBCs take place on the first Sunday in each month from 09:30 - 10:30 prior to our All Age Worship and raise funds for local, national or international charities. We would dearly love to welcome anyone and everyone to the breakfasts and the service and promise a sociable fun time. On Friday 20th September, the amount raised, so far at the McMillian Big Coffee Morning was in access of £240 with further donations promised. Over the weekend of September 14and 15 Christchurch held their Harvest festival celebrations. On the Saturday evening a Harvest supper and Beatle drive raised £140 for Methodist Homes for the Aged and provided a fun family time with marvellous food. Many thanks must go to Lorraine and her helpers for their hours of hard work to make the evening possible. The Church was beautifully decorated and our Sunday services well attended to celebrate this special time of year. All produce donated was taken to the Shepshed Food Bank.

St Botolph’s Church Shepshed, Ride & Stride 2019 Article by James Nigel Bilsbrough
On 14th September members of St Botolph’s church, Shepshed took part in the annual Leicestershire Historic Churches Trust Ride + Stride event. This encourages people of all ages to raise sponsorship to visit places of worship in their locality by whatever means they choose. Of the funds raised, over £1m in Leicester and Leicestershire since 1990, half goes directly to the church nominated by the participants and half goes to the Trust which uses the money to offer grants to historic churches and chapels in the city and county for repairs and facilities. On a glorious day eight striders left St Botolph’s to complete a walk of over eight miles managing to visit five places of worship on route as well as take in a rather leisurely lunch stop. At the same time St Botolph’s Tandem Team riders, David Corah and Nigel Bilsbrough, this year celebrating a combined age of 150, left for the start of a 20 mile circular cycle ride which managed to include 14 places of worship. We must also say thank you to our meeters and greeters in church who welcomed visitors throughout the day and ensured they were adequately supplied with much needed refreshments. And, of course, thank you to our sponsors, a grand total of £289 was pledged on the day.

Christian Aid Week Event News Article by David Bridges
A hearty ’thank you’ to all the people of Shepshed and Oaks in Charnwood who supported the five churches in this year’s “Christian Aid Week” events. With the addition of Gift Aid, almost £3,800.00 has been raised and forwarded to the “Christian Aid” charity. An ever expanding range of local events added to the ‘house to house’ collections; including a sponsored walk from Shepshed through Garendon Park, a Soup Lunch, concert, table top sale and ever favourite cake stall; all of which not only raised significant sums but provided an enjoyable time and treats for those involved. The Christian Aid local group treasurer said that “The St James Oaks in Charnwood, and the Shepshed Churches of Charnwood Road Baptist, St Winefrides Roman Catholic Church, Christchurch Methodists and St Botolphs Parish Church, pool resources for this annual event which has raised such a magnificent sum, building year on year. Thanks to all actively involved, and the local community who so willingly support the events and giving."

Friends of the Charnwood Forest Article by Dr D McNeil
The first meeting of the Friends this season took place on Thursday 26th September at the Woodhouse Eaves village hall, where we were to have heard a talk on ‘Visitors to Charnwood forest’ by David Robinson. Unfortunately this talk had to be postponed for medical reasons, so Marilyn Palmer gave a talk on ‘The Making of the Industrial Landscape in Leicestershire’. ‘Landscape’ is perhaps best connected with Leicestershire through the work of W G Hoskins, late professor of local history at Leicester University. What people may not realise is that he came to dislike Leicestershire, and particularly its industrial landscape, and he retreated to Devon as soon as he was able. So what were the industries that contributed to this landscape? The talk covered the rise, and in some cases the fall, of these industries, from knitting and the boot and shoe industry to iron founding and engineering, and the bricks which made St Pancras station. Weaving was, of course, a very ancient occupation. At first sheep were shorn, the wool either combed or carded, then spun and knitted, all by hand. The first knitting machines may well have orginated in Nottinghamshire, and certainly by the mid 18th century the highest concentrations were in the Nottingham, Leicester and Derby shires. These evolved into power-driven machines which by the 1870’s formed the basis for a factory culture. Here the talk touched on the subject of the role of women in the growth of this industry. Meanwhile boots and shoes were being manufactured chiefly in Northamptonshire, but the industry spread north in the 1860’s, examples being the Wheatsheaf Works and the British United Shoe Machinery Co, both in Leicester city. Charles Bennion, the CEO of British United, was responsible for the presentation of Bradgate Park to the people of Leicester and its shire. Iron works arose at this time; Gimson’s works being a very good example. Its products may still be viewed at the Abbey Pumping station, which originally was designed to pump sewage to Beaumont Leys but is now a museum. To make things involves a source of energy, anything from man or horse power to the introduction of steam, the product of heating water using a coal fire. The next topic in the talk was, logically, about the coal industry. In the north western part of the county the coal measures have a fairly thin overburden and are easily mined. Unfortunately, between them and their city lies the Charnwood Forest, which makes transport both difficult and expensive. This led on to transport, which is necessary for industrial growth in any case – the bigger the market, the more prosperous the industry. The coming of the canalisation of the river Soar between the Trent and Leicester allowed cheap coal from Derbyshire to flood into Leicester, depriving the Leicestershire coalfield of its market. Its first attempt at retrieving the situation was the Charnwood Forest canal – a disaster in the making. Then came the Leicester and Swannington Railway, well known as the Stephenson line that had to create both the steam whistle and the Glenfield tunnel. The age of steam has come to an end. Factories which once produced enough to give Leicester the title of the richest city in Europe are now blocks of flats, either by conversion or destruction. Smoke no longer hangs over the city. Would Hoskins have approved? We shall never know... The next meeting of the Friends will be at the same venue on 14th October when Martyn Speight will give a talk on ‘The Storey of the Charnwood Water Supply over the last 150 years’.

Loughborough In Bloom Strikes Gold Article by Charnwood Borough Council
Loughborough is blooming proud after being awarded gold at the East Midlands in Bloom awards. The town also won the Best Small City category, achieving 190 points out of 200, the best score the town has ever received. This is the ninth year running Loughborough has won gold since 2011. The awards ceremony took place on Wednesday September 18 in Chesterfield. Marion Smith, Loughborough in Bloom chair, said: “We’re once again absolutely delighted with winning gold for the ninth year. Loughborough in Bloom really is a community effort and this year’s result is testament to everyone’s hard work and commitment. I’d like to thank everyone involved including Love Loughborough and Loughborough University for their support. It was also great to see Barrow and Syston pick up silver awards in their categories, so congratulations also go to them.” Loughborough launched a new town centre colour scheme of vibrant pink, purple and yellow to celebrate the Loughborough Market Charter which was signed almost 800 years ago in 2021. The beacon in Queens Park was planted with bright colours including begonias and geraniums. Councillor Jenny Bokor, the Council’s lead member for Loughborough, said: “Loughborough looked blooming brilliant again this year and it’s wonderful that the town has won gold once again. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has been involved this year and to our partners Serco and Idverde for their continued support of bloom. This is a wonderful achievement for our town. Loughborough was also proud to welcome the judges from Britain in Bloom this summer and we’re keeping everything crossed for those awards later this year.” Cllr Hilary Fryer, who sits on the Loughborough in Bloom board and has been involved for many years, said: “Loughborough in Bloom is a team effort, I’d like to thank all of the volunteers and community groups for committing their time to help Loughborough to blossom this year. Being awarded gold for the ninth time in a row is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved.” There were also awards for Love Loughborough, Hardwick House School and the Griffin Pub in Loughborough. The Loughborough in Bloom effort was supported by community groups, residents, businesses and organisations from across Loughborough. The town was selected earlier in the year to represent the East Midlands in the small city category at the Britain in Bloom awards organised by the Royal Horticultural Society. The winners will be announced at a national ceremony in October.

Brexit Party Names Sadhana Stokes As Parliamentary Candidate For Charnwood Article by Sadhana Stokes
Before I proceed to events in October I would like to go back to the main event in August. The Wicked Music Fest went ahead despite the weather. The forecasts predicted that the strong winds, which caused the postponement of the Saturday opening, would die down by the actual opening at 5 pm. And they did. Unfortunately, potential punters did not turn up in sufficient numbers for the organisers to break even. In fact, they made a loss of £32,000. They have appealed to the public to donate to try to reduce the deficit. As I write, the total has reached £3,445 with two recent very generous anonymous donations of £200 and £100. It is a pity that so many people who would have normally attended the event, failed to do so, especially as the weather was not at all unpleasant. As a consequence, the situation is now that there will not be a festival next year. We have lost the finest music festival in the area for a year. The organisers will run the Fireworks event in November and a fundraising do to wipe out the debt and try to build up a surplus to cover them in the event of bad weather in 2021. I would like to appeal to those who decided not to attend this year to donate to the crowdfunding at www.gofundme. com/wickedhathern to help keep this excellent festival alive in the future The Fireworks event will be on November 2nd. I am promoting it this month because it will be over before you get the November issue. Shepshed are not running a Fireworks this year again. Hathern needs to have a bumper turnout. Please come yourselves and tell everyone you know about it. The display has been tremendous in previous years and there will be music, kids’ entertainment, fairground rides and a big disco. And the usual bars, of course!! There will also be a silent display for young kids. Hathern Community Library are running a free Socktober Fest on October 11th at 16.00 and on the 12th at 14.30. The volunteers have been collecting socks, (mostly washed we trust) and are asking you to bring socks to make them into something and play a game of Knock Your Socks Off on Friday. Saturday will see a puppet show. Don’t forget the ongoing activities at the library such as All Join In with games and stories for toddlers on alternate Thursdays at 10.30 – 11, the Art Group every Monday 2 – 4 and Craft and Chat on Wednesdays 2 -4. Tea and coffee are served every Friday morning from 10 – 12.30 during the normal slot. So please go and browse with a cuppa. The Library has added a Crochet Session to its ever-growing list of activities every Saturday in October from 10 – 12. A week later than the Sockoberfest the 19th the Parish Church is running a supper and film night with a feature film and a Bring ‘n’ Share Supper. A drink is provided. The CBC officer Cara Wild made a site visit to Daisy Bank Park in early September and immediately wrote a report on the outstanding works. She sent this to William Davis and it was forwarded to the appropriate person for action within 14 minutes!! William Davis now have to replace all the dead and dying trees, reseed parts of the play area and edges of paths and replace all the dead shrubs. We are just at the beginning of the planting season and we all need to make sure that William Davis don’t leave it too late again. The tree warden for the parish council, Dave Neville, told the meeting on September 23 that we should expect some movement on the replanting by the end of October. If not, I will inform Cara and she will follow it up. I would urge residents to monitor this and report. We hope to have all trees and shrubs in place by the end of the planting season. I heard through the Hathern bush telegraph that the listed building 19 The Leys had been bought. I contacted Martin Jones, the CBC conservation officer who has been dealing with this property for some time. He had been approached by the new owners for advice on several occasions and is convinced that they intend to do any work in the correct way and follow the stipulations of the planning permission they took over from the previous owners. They have employed a fine company to do the work and are consulting an expert on timber frame restoration. I think we can be assured that the work will be done properly if it is technically possible. If it is not, a new application for planning permission would be required. I have funded a new pool table for Hathern Youth Club with a member’s grant and my fellow councillor Emma Ward has given a grant to Upstarts Gymnastics Club. I have around £350 left for this year.

Sadhana Stokes has been announced as a parliamentary candidate for the Brexit Party in Charnwood. She is a British Asian business woman and local resident for over 20 years and will contest the constituency in the next general election, standing against incumbent, Edward Argar. Sadhana Stokes, Brexit Party candidate said: “My entire family were kicked out of Uganda by the Dictator Idi Amin. We came to this country because it was a beacon of Justice, Freedom and Democracy. Today, that reputation is being destroyed by self-serving politicians betraying their own promises to the electorate. Their failure to honour the referendum result proves they have learnt nothing since the expenses scandal.” Richard Tice, Brexit Party Chairman said: “The Brexit Party stands ready to fight a general election with a full slate of candidates in all the UK’s 650 constituencies. We will take on the major parties, which have failed the British people time and time again. The vast majority of our candidates are entering politics for the first time and they come from all walks of life, backgrounds, races and religions. Their greatest strength is that they are not professional politicians, but are competent individuals, connected to their local areas and issues they seek to represent. They have achieved great things in their professional or personal life, from entrepreneurs, small business owners and economists – to teachers, academics, forklift driver and bankers. But we all share a commitment to deliver Brexit, defend democracy and change politics for good.” The three Brexit Party MEPs for the East Midlands have congratulated prospective parliamentary candidate for Charnwood, businesswoman Sadhana Stokes. Annunziata Rees-Mogg, Jonathan Bullock and Matthew Patten said in a joint statement: "We would like to wish Sadhana Stokes all the best in Charnwood – a seat which voted by 57.9 per cent to 'leave' in the referendum of 2016. Along with our prospective candidates up and down the country, Sadhana will fight for Brexit and fight to restore trust in our democracy, which has been betrayed by the Government and the political classes.” Charnwood MP Edward Argar supported the remain camp in the EU referendum.

Leicestershire's Mike Spathaky Transcribes Parents' Wartime Love Letters In New Book Article by Philippa Iliffe
Dear Kath, Love Ron is a transcription of letters from Ron Spathaky to his wife Kath written between 1937 and 1946, mainly during his Army service. Being a war-time couple certainly had its ups and downs. Ron writes about the good times, often in terms which he himself describes as “Lawrencish”, revealing their loving and passionate relationship. They had rough patches too, of course: rows during weekend leaves patched up by post; confessions of unfaithfulness by them both and the ensuing anguish. Through Ron’s interest in the places he visited and the people he met, we’re immersed in the heat of the Tunisian desert, the primitive houses of Italian villages, the boredom of a military hospital, the bleakness of Salisbury Plain, conversations with farmers in France, Belgium and Palestine, a kibbutz near Haifa, the tombs of the Pharaohs… All the while, his memories of the Sussex countryside sustain him while he is abroad. Through Ron’s replies to Kath we catch glimpses of her entry into full-time work and then motherhood. Just three of her letters to Ron have survived but they are pivotal to their story. Finally, with Ron’s homecoming and letters from the Midlands, their story is rounded off as he starts teaching and looks for a house in which to start the family life they have dreamt of for so long. Told through their own words and edited by their son Mike Spathaky, Dear Kath, Love Ron is an honest and endearing work of serious nonfiction. Mike Spathaky lives in Oadby, Leicestershire. In his main career as a community educator and in his wide-ranging interests, writing has always been central to his life. He says, "On finding my father's letters in 2016, I knew they just had to be preserved for future generations. I started to transcribe them and it became apparent that the storylines running through them to an ending that gave closure to the issues and traumas of my parents' wartime separation would make for an interesting book."
Community Groups Urged To Contact Local Councillors About Grant Funding Article by Charnwood Borough Council
Community groups in Charnwood are being urged to contact their local councillor to help them access grant funding for projects. The member grants scheme is run by Charnwood Borough Council and enables each borough councillor to award up to £1,000 to projects in their ward each year. Cllr Jonathan Morgan, leader of the Council said: “The member grants scheme helps spread funding to projects right across Charnwood, in each ward. We want to encourage groups who are making a positive contribution to their community to contact their local councillor about the grants.” The Forest Road Greenbelt Gardeners has been awarded a total of £750 from three different councillors. The funding has been used towards

At a recent meeting of the Projects Committee which is chaired by Cllr Radford discussion took place regarding projects for consideration. On the agenda was improving the public toilets. It was agreed that we would go back to Full Council to get an agreement to go out and get quotes to do a complete refurbishment. We also looked at providing a Dog Agility area in Glenmore Park; this will be a secured fenced off area. We also looked at replacing the keep fit equipment in Glenmore Park with a better facility which would enable people with disabilities being able to use it. We also looked at setting up a Neighbourhood Plan, but this will be a long term project. At the Estates Committee the usual topics were discussed. The main topic up for discussion was doing something to commemorate 75 years since the end of WWII in Europe in May next year as we were disappointed that the previous administration had not organised an event to celebrate 100 years since the end of WW1. It was decided to set up a separate committee to move ahead with this project. The Town Council will have to precept monies to hold this event This meeting was held and the Cllrs who agreed to sit on it are Bebbington, Grainger, Popley, Radford, Savage and Tassell. It was decided to hold the event on Saturday 9th May 2020, from 1 pm – 7 pm. It was agreed that there will be no charge for residents to gain entrance to this event, which will be held on Glenmore Park. The event will be centred on music from 1940’s; vintage, army and classic vehicles, children’s entertainment, we will have a beer tent, hog roast, picnic area and we will be working with other groups who would like to be involved. If you are interested in getting involved, we are looking for singers, entertainers etc. who feel they can contribute to the success of this event. It is at the very early stages of organising. Please contact the Town Council office on 508872 or any of the above Cllrs if you wish to be involved. We will be inviting local groups to have a stand, which will be free of charge, to promote what they do in Shepshed. We will be looking to have a display in the library and are hoping to get comments from residents who can remember the end of the war in Europe and also memories from evacuees who were evacuated to Shepshed and then made Shepshed their home. Following the resignation of Claire Poole a Labour Councillor in June there will be a co-option taking place. We will report who the successful person is next month. Your Conservative Cllrs are: Bill Bebbington, Eric Chapman, Denis Forster, Peter Grainger, David Northage, Robin Popley, Christine Radford, John Savage, Paul Spencer, Joan Tassell and Ian Williams.
carving a story telling seat from a dead standing oak tree in Forest Road. The seat has been created in memory of Loughborough in Bloom stalwart Harry Cook. Cllr Richard Bailey, who represents the Outwoods ward and awarded £250 to the project said “The Forest Road Greenbelt Gardeners help to maintain a wonderful green space in my ward which I know is appreciated by many residents. Harry Cook was well thought of in the local community and I was happy to support this project with part of my grant to create a lasting feature on the greenbelt in Harry’s memory. The member grants scheme is a fantastic opportunity for councillors to find out more about the work community groups do in the local area and support them by awarding them with some funding.” Harry’s widow Pat said: “The story telling seat was always one of Harry’s dreams. I’m pleased we’ve been able to make it happen with the help of the member grants scheme. I was so overwhelmed by the support of the local community, schools, local business’ and Charnwood Borough Council. A total of £8,436 was raised through the Spacehive crowd funding platform in
conjunction with the idverde community investment fund for the project. I would like to thank everyone who supported the campaign.” Interested organisations should discuss their project with their local councillor before applying. Applications for the member grants scheme can be submitted at any time up until December 31, 2019. Cllr Christine Radford T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com
As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges onto the highways/footpaths, social services etc. No Left Turn Iveshead Road I am pleased that County saw sense and the petition to do away with the no left turn at the bottom of Iveshead Road where it joins the A512 have been approved. Residents will still be able to turn left into Ashby Road without having to use the X roads at Charley. A512 Roadworks Update Morgan Sindall the company carry out the works are currently installing a haul road to install new BT poles from Snell’s Nook up to M1 J23. They are also tree felling and clearing on the A512 Shepshed side of the M1 and locating the existing STW and Gas Main. They are also conducting badger surveys and archaeological recordings. They are continuing the development of the Hanson Offices (which will be their offices) by renewing electrics and installing IT. They are also awaiting BT Overhead diversion on the A512 East of the M1. Charley Road X Roads The majority of works to improve safety at the Charley Road/Iveshead Road cross roads has been completed. The roads have been resurfaced and County have applied and enhanced anti-skid surfacing. In addition new advanced warning signs and give way signs have been installed. The area of new anti-skid surfacing was increased and applying rumble strips on this surface would decrease the skid resistance. New bend with cross road warning signs have been installed on Iveshead Road and Abbey Road approaches to the junction. New advanced give way signs have been installed on both Charley Road approaches to the junction. Damaged chevron signs, marker posts and give way signs have also been replaced. County are currently waiting on dates to begin further improvement works, including introducing additional vehicle activated signs. I keep being asked if County could reduce the speed. The reply I get from County is the national criteria for setting speed limits does not justify a 30 mph speed limit at this location. I will keep monitoring this junction along with the support of residents. Traffic And Safety Issues In Shepshed A number of residents have raised issues about traffic and safety concerns around Shepshed. In terms of taking any action with regard to the speed of traffic on local roads and in respect of implementing any traffic calming measures the County Council is only able to take further action where there is evidence of a safety need as demonstrated by the number of personal injury accidents recorded by Leicestershire Police. Speeding traffic is the responsibility of the Police and is responsible for enforcement of the speed limit. Residents are able to report suspected speeding incidents to the Police. There is also a Community Speed watch scheme details can be found on www.communityspeedwatch.org.uk Shepshed has two Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) on Hathern Road near to the Motorway bridge, which I recently reported as faulty and was found to have a few LED units faulty and this repair has been requested. The second VAS sign can be found on Iveshead Road. The placement of static speed cameras on the road network is also subject to a fairly rigorous set of nationally applied criteria. In placing these, County are only allowed to do so at locations that meet criterial that include recorded injury accidents and a high level of speeding traffic. With regard to suggestions of double yellow lines at junctions, any such measures involve a fairly lengthy and expensive legal order making process and as a result County are only able to consider this type of measure at location where the evidence, including recorded injury

accidents, shows that action must be taken. Residents only parking schemes are generally only considered for streets where the majority of residents have no access to off street parking. Residents can be assured that any request to me will be forwarded to County for their consideration. Recycling Simplified Across Leicestershire Districts councils in Leicestershire have joined forces to make recycling easier than ever by providing a more consistent recycling service for Leicestershire residents. The majority of county residents are now able to recycle exactly the same materials in their recycling wheelie bins wherever they live in the county. Six district councils have worked together to produce one simple list of what can and cannot be put into the recycling bin. It is hoped that not only will this offer better consistency for residents countywide, but that it will also encourage residents to recycle more things, more often. A complete list of items that can be recycled can be seen here: www. lesswaste.org.uk/items-accepted-for-recycling-at-casepak Until recently when recycling bins were emptied by crews in each council area, the contents were taken to several different recycling sites for sorting. Each recycling site had different rules and different processes which meant items that could be recycled in some districts could not be recycled in others. That changed last year and now recycling collections from most districts – Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough, Hinckley & Bosworth, Melton and Oadby & Wigston – are now taken to a single materials recycling facility in Leicester which has enabled the councils to team up for the first time. Up to date information on what the recycling is used for is also available at www.lesswaste.org.uk It is hoped that this will make recycling easier for Leicestershire residents, leading to more recycling and less waste going to landfill. Blackbrook Reservoir Following the recent problems with the dam at Toddbrook Reservoir, Waley Bridge in Derbyshire when part of a village had to be evacuated. I contacted Severn Trent to ask how often the dam at Blackbrook is inspected. I have received confirmation that not only this dam but all dams and reservoirs are inspected under a statutory responsibility once a year. However Severn Trent stated that they go far beyond the statutory requirements by inspecting all of their dams at least once a week and some of them three times a week. Severn Trent went on to say that the dam at Blackbrook is inspected at least weekly by one of their trained operatives, four times per year by my contact, a Reservoir Technician and annually by the Reservoir Supervising Engineer as required by the Reservoirs Act 1975. It is also inspected by an independent Inspecting Engineer. Post Office Pensioners are being asked to close their Post Office Card account. Letters have been sent from Whitehall to the elderly telling them to switch to a bank account for the receipt of their state pension. The Post Office card account provides a simple way to receive pensions, tax credits or benefits, with no overdraft, fees or charges to worry about. You can refuse to move and keep your old card. The Department for Work and Pensions contract with the Post Office to provide the accounts expires in August 2021. I campaigned some years ago to keep open the 2 Post Offices we still have in Shepshed if we do not use them we will lose them. I refused to cancel my Card and shall carry on doing so. Register Your Child For School If you have a child who is due to start school next September, 2020 you have until 15th January to get them registered. You will receive your offer of a place sometime around 16th April. You need to put down 3 options, not just your preferred one. If your child is currently in year 6 you have until 31st October
to apply for secondary schools and an offer will come out to at the beginning of March. Drivers Leave Car Engine Ticking Over A planned crackdown aims to protect children from toxic air at school gates. Commercial delivery drivers who stop to load vans, plus those who wait at taxi ranks and bus stops will be targeted. I have approached Arriva regarding how often their bus drivers are stationary with their engines running and have taken this up with their Head Office. Complaints have also been made about HGV’s delivering to building sites in Shepshed early in the mornings and leaving their engines idling/ running. These complaints have been followed up. Putting a stop to idling is an easy way to drive down dangerously high levels of pollutions, reducing its impact on the environment and on our health and our children’s health. These can trigger health problems from heart and lung disease to strokes and cancer and are particularly damaging to children. Advance Notice Of A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) A TTRO is to be made for the following location: Church Street. The purpose of the TTRO is to allow Cadent Gas to safely undertake gas service works in the carriageway. The TTRO will incorporate a temporary road closure and temporary suspension of one-way system. The duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of 12 days commencing on the 21st October. I have made County aware that this part of Shepshed has very narrow roads and to make sure that any signage indicates this. Adults And Communities Overview And Scrutiny Committee As Cabinet support for Adults and Communities I attended this scrutiny committee. There were various topics up for scrutiny such as Domiciliary Care Service post November 2020, Carers Support Update, Progress report on the relocation of the Record Office and an update on Phase One of the Collections and Learning Hub Project. Next steps in the Library services and provision. Following on from this meeting I have arranged to visit the current Records Office and Collection facilities and I am down to visit Libraries around the County and have opened the Libraries Live Exhibition Launch at Newbold Verdon Library on 9th September. Over the summer I visited Bosworth Battlefield, this was the first time I had been and was surprised of how large an area it was, not just a field. I was invited to attend The Bosworth Battlefield Rose Laying Ceremony on 22nd August which was the anniversary of the death of King Richard III. I have also visited the 1620’s house at DonIngton le Heath which has undergone a refurbishment; they have a lovely garden and café. These 2 properties fall under the Adults and Communities department, I am learning just how many different types of properties County look after such as Museums as well as Libraries, Care homes etc. VAS Sign - Hathern Road I am aware that the VAS sign is not working again and County are aware of this and are awaiting parts to repair it. Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such as overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess, inconsiderate parking (on pavements, yellow lines, outside of schools) etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. If for some reason you do not receive your copy of the Eye. I now have my information posted on my web page at County. This will also help you to keep track on road closures etc. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 01509 502974 or e mail christine_radford@hotmail.com or christine.radford@ leics.gov.uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road, 10am11am. Local Plan 2019-2036 The Core Strategy was adopted in November 2015 and it provides a development strategy for the Borough to 2028. Whilst the Core Strategy remains an up to date plan guiding where and how new development should take place, work has commenced on the preparation of a new local plan to cover a longer period to 2036. There are four reasons why the Council reviewing the Core Strategy and saved policies: • To respond to new evidence on the need for homes and jobs; • To meet the national requirement to review plans at least every five years; • To update the Council’s policies for determining planning applications, some of which were last updated in 2004; • To align our plan with the Leicester and Leicestershire Strategic Growth Plan. The new local plan, once adopted, will replace both the Core Strategy and the saved policies of the Borough of Charnwood Local Plan. The Council has already undertaken two consultations to help it prepare the draft local plan. The first of these was on the scope of the plan in July 2016 and the second on the key issues and options in April 2018,when the Council published a discussion paper titled @Towards a Local Plan for Charnwood’ (www.charnwood.gov.uk/local_plan_review). The results of those consultations have also informed the draft plan. Cabinet agenda was published on 4th October and Cabinet will consider the draft local plan on 17th October and if approved for consultation, a six weeks public consultation is expected from 4th November. The Borough Councillors will be given a briefing on the 15th October and a briefing to Parish and Town Clerks on 8th October and Town and Parish Councillors on 21st October.
