The Importance Of The "Back To School" Eye Exam National statistics show that only 20% of children have their eyes tested regularly, whereas 92% of us will take our children to the dentist every year. What is worrying is that 20% of students starting their reception year have been found to have an undiagnosed vision problem. Many of us remember the days when we had our eyes tested by the school nurse and assume that it is happening for our children. However, 70% of primary schools in England offer no visual screening. Even if your child has had some form of ‘vision check’ at school, this would not have included an examination of the health of the eye, which is equally important. Studies have also shown that undetected eye conditions can have a direct link to a child’s educational performance. 80% of children with learning difficulties have an underlying visual problem. In other words, if a child is having difficulties seeing what is on the white board or computer screen, they’re far more likely than other children to become frustrated with the whole learning process and consequently underperform.

In the UK, all children are eligible for a FREE NHS EYE EXAMINATION up to the age of 18 (as long as they are in full time education). Loughborough Chamber Choir Delighted To Be Performing On Home Turf!

Over the last few years, Viva La Musica has been building up a reputation for being one of the more exciting chamber choirs operating in the East Midlands. The choir is delighted to be performing in Loughborough for the first time since the appointment of its current Music Director, Simon Lumby, in 2015. Viva La Musica is made up of 18 voices from Loughborough and the surrounding area and performs a wide variety of sacred and secular repertoire, mostly 'a capella'. Recent concerts have been in the city of Leicester and other parts of the East Midlands. Last year the singers also enjoyed a weekend singing services in Worcester Cathedral, where they were greatly appreciated. The choir has rehearsed at Trinity Methodist Church Centre since it was first established in 2002 and will be performing there in September. The concert, at 7.30pm on September 30th, is entitled Where words fail, music speaks and is described as ‘a concert of choral music that stirs the soul’. It will include Tippett - Five Spirituals from ‘Child of our Time’, Barber - Agnus Dei (Adagio), Elgar - Lux Eterna (Nimrod), Harris - Faire is the Heaven, as well as works by Stanford, Whitacre and Finzi. For this concert, the choir will be joined by soprano soloist, Jo Boddison, and organist, Michael Overbury. Trinity Methodist Church Centre is in Royland Rd, Loughborough, tickets are £10 (£8 student, under 16s free) and can be purchased in advance from www.vivalamusica.org.uk. They will also be available on the door on the night. Viva la Musica hopes to see you for what promises to be a wonderful evening.

Shepshed History Society On August 8th Shepshed History Society had their annual open air outing. This year members were taken on a Peter Le Marchant boat trip down the Grand Union Canal. Despite the constant rain, the journey was very enjoyable as members travelled in a centrally heated boat and were looked after by the good natured crew with free coffee, tea and biscuits. The journey began in Loughborough and the boat travelled down the canal until reaching the Plough In at Normanton-on-Soar where members enjoyed a delicious hot meal that had been previously ordered while travelling on the boat. A very enjoyable trip out despite the inclement weather and it was voted a great success by all the members. The September meeting on the 12th the speaker will be Mr Robin Knox and his subject to be Medieval Manor Houses. Please feel free to come and join us at the Glenmore Centre at 7.30pm.

Shepshed Probus Club The August meeting of Shepshed Probus Club was held in the restaurant section of Junction 23 Truck Stop. Business matters were discussed followed by prayers, a 3 course lunch which was enjoyed by all after which a raffle took place. This month our speaker was Hugh Griffiths who spoke to members about the Brush Works and their products. Mr Brush was born and raised near Cleveland, Ohio, USA and showed early promise as an engineer. He graduated from Michigan University as a mechanical engineer, became interested in electrical engineering and in 1876 he produced his first dynamo. Two years later, in a factory belonging to a friend which he had been allowed to use, he produced his first successful arc lamp. America was soon using the arc lamp all over the continent so Mr Brush began to look to other outlets. He bought a factory in the centre of London but soon outgrew it then found a suitable site in Loughborough with room for expansion. Mr Brush built the Falcon Works and a large wooden model of a falcon was displayed outside the works for many years. It has now been restored and moved to Crich Tramway Museum. The Brush Company continued to expand and diversify. It supplied motors for trams, trains, airplanes, turbines for wind turbines and many different dynamo's for factories and different users all over the world. One of the largest of these was built on their factory in Slovakia (at that time the largest in the world). It was fitted in Abbey Pumping Station in Leicester. Brush continues to use its innovative work in its research and development facility on site. After the members showed their appreciation for a very interesting talk, the Chairman reminded everyone that the next meeting would be held on Monday 4th September at 12.30pm. New members are always welcome and if you are interested in joining the club, please contact the Secretary Wilf, on 01509 769802.

Free 'Learn To Sing In Harmony' Course For Men Due to the overwhelming success of this year’s Learn to sing course in February and the added attraction of “ Pitch Battle “ on TV we are holding another course in September starting on Monday 18th September. So come on why not be part of “Learn to Sing in Harmony“ The free 'Learn to Sing in Harmony' course is being held by Heart of England Chorus at the Birstall Social Club, Wanlip Lane, Birstall LE4 4JS. Aimed at both newcomers and those who have not sung for a while, the course is to encourage more men, young and older to take up singing, which is increasingly acknowledged as being an aid to a healthy lifestyle. There are many men who would love to sing but most never get around to trying, don’t have the opportunity or maybe are too self-conscious to give it a go but the simple fact is that just about everyone can sing. Attendees learn within a group which makes it less daunting, there are no embarrassing public auditions and it’s free! With the professional help of our Musical Director Ian Phillips and Assistant MD Christine Dickens participants will be helped to discover their voice, learn the techniques of making the most of it and how to use it in four-part harmony with others. There’s no need to worry about reading music as the teaching methods employed are designed to help quickly learn the specially-commissioned song. For men who haven't sung for a few years this course is the perfect way to ease their vocal chords back into action. Regular singers may also find the course useful to learn different voice parts, in a relaxed and friendly environment. The course will run from 7-30pm to 10pm All the material will be provided with access to course teaching materials. Contact: P.J.Hunt Secretary 0116 2675 339 email: jansbolt@btinternet.com

Elliot Charles Fun Day Raises A Whopping Total Of £3,290! “We were taken aback by the amount of people that bought tickets for the advance raffle and were thrilled that so many local companies gave prizes, their support has been fantastic. On the day we had hundreds of people visit, everyone had a really good time and thankfully the weather was kind to us. The sheer amount of people that turned out to support us really is a testament to how much of a popular boy Elliot really was, and although missed every single day by so many, we feel that everyone involved has done him proud. Thank You All.” - Richard “I would like to say a huge thank you to all involved in the Fun Day whether it was time, donations, buying ingredients, raffle tickets or even attending we simply could not have done it without you!! We raised £1,350 on the ‘advance raffle’ for the charity Children Are Butterflies and then on the day we raised a further £1,940 for our charities, making a whopping total of £3,290” - Tracy

There Should Be A Will, And There Is A Way! For some years now, local charity Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland has campaigned to reduce the 7 out of 10 people who die without a will.

PHOTO: (Left to right) President Jenny Warner with Past President Ngaire Hall

Rotarys 71 Years Of Service To Shepshed

To that end this year, more than twenty offices of local Solicitors have generously agreed to reduce their Will Writing charges for older people to only £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will. Whilst this is a huge reduction of around £100 with no strings attached, in earlier years some people have chosen to recognise needy local older people by leaving a greatly appreciated legacy to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland or making a donation, where the need is great especially in these difficult times.

The official Chain of Office is now long, heavy, and stepped in the names of local Shepshed Rotarians. President Jenny Warner receives the Presidential Chain of Office from her predecessor Ngaire Hall. The Club is always looking for new members to help us fulfil our Motto “Service before Self”. We meet twice a month at Charnwood Golf Club and if you would like further details, or to attend a meeting, please contact Jenny Warner 01509 502966 or Robert Hall 01509 842643.

There is just a week to go before this year’s offer is available from 1st September until 31st October. Hundreds of people took advantage of this superb, low - cost deal last year in what proved to be a very successful initiative by the charity. Details are available from 0116 2992233 or www.ageuk.org.uk/leics

Serenade News Back After The Summer Break!

Commenting, the Executive Director of Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, Tony Donovan said, “Most people appreciate that it is extremely important to make a Will, but either never get round to it or continue to put it off on the basis that they are too young and it is something that they will do when they are much older. Unfortunately 7 out of 10 people die without sorting it out, in spite of the clear benefits. By making a Will you take the pressure off those nearest and dearest to you who will receive your money and property, rather than it being left to the rules of law to decide. Even if you have made a will, perhaps it was so long ago that it is time to consider whether it needs revising. Don’t miss this opportunity to put matters straight!”

Serenade, Shepshed’s ladies community choir, are starting up again after the long summer break.

shopping centre/market Christmas sings and also the British Legion Concert in November. All the time we aim to have fun, learn new skills and importantly raise money for our chosen charities.

We start our Autumn season with our AGM on September 11th, and although all are welcome, we recommend that any new members who haven’t sung with us before come and join us for our first sing. This will be on September 18th and we would love to see lots of new members come for an informal fun sing session (times and venue below).

Fancy joining us? We’re always happy to welcome new members, 16 years and above, so why not come along to Shepshed High School where we meet every Monday evening during term time at 7.30 pm. No auditions or tests, just come along and sing! It’s just £3 per session and this includes refreshments of tea, coffee or squash and biscuits as well as music.

We will then start preparing for our winter/Christmas concert (dates and venue TBA), as well as taking part in other events such as Nursing home sing tours,

Alternatively, if you’d like more information, please contact Keleigh Atkin 07775 558219 or visit the Serenade website at www. serenadeshepshed.co.uk

Shepshed WI Living With A Stammer

Steve’s life changed when he discovered a Speech Recovery Programme called the McGuire programme, devised by American Dave Maguire in 1994, which involves a method of breathing used by some opera singers. There are now many groups around the world, the largest being in the UK due to the popularity of Gareth Gates who is now a coach with the Programme. Since Steve took part in the programme he has learned how to manage his stammer, gaining confidence, and is also now a coach with the programme and a Toast Master. It proved a fascinating subject which not many of us had really thought about before.

Members of Shepshed WI met in August and welcomed Steve West who was originally from Shepshed. He told his story of how he had suffered from a stammer since he was a child and in many ways it had held him back and he avoided talking to people and trying to hide it. Over the years he has tried hypnotherapy which did not work. He said that having a stammer is not hereditary and is often a habit and that people do not stammer when they are singing. It is now an officially recognised disability and if you still have a stammer at 18 the chances are that you will always have it. 1% of the population have the disability and interestingly it affects more males than females.

The next WI meeting will take place at Christchurch Methodist Church, Field Street, Shepshed on Thursday 7th September at 7.30pm when there will be a harvest auction.

Alzheimer’s Society Seeks Volunteers To Help Make A Difference To The Lives Of People With Dementia Alzheimer’s Society in Leicestershire and Rutland is looking for volunteers to support people with dementia keep doing the things they love. The charity has launched a recruitment drive for ‘Side By Side volunteers’ to work across both counties. The service involves people with dementia and volunteers doing things such as visiting the gym, walking or visiting places of interest together. There are 12000 people living with dementia in Leicestershire and 600 people with dementia in Rutland, and that number is expected to rise. Suna Tilley, Alzheimer’s Society Side By Side Coordinator for Leicestershire and Rutland said: “The sad reality is that people with dementia can often become isolated and find it difficult to remain part of their community. Taking part in hobbies or activities they previously enjoyed can seem too difficult. This is what Side by Side aims to change. We currently have 36 volunteers in Leicestershire and Rutland and we need to double that number. It's a flexible way to give your time and you really can make a huge difference to someone's life.” Volunteers are given training and are reimbursed for expenses. Anyone interested in finding out more about volunteering for Alzheimer’s Society’s in Leicestershire and Rutland should contact Suna Tilley Side By Side Coordinator on 0116 2311113

Latest News From Animals Are Amazing!

We are all aware of a dog’s keen sense of smell which is thousands of times more sensitive than a human’s.

I share my home with three cats. Not only does each one look different, they also have different likes and dislikes. Each one has a favourite place to sleep. Two of them prefer the outdoors. One is very affectionate, another dislikes being picked up. One is outgoing and sociable, another is nervous. They like different food and each has his or her unique personality. However I know for certain that if I accidentally tread on a paw or tail the response will be the same. They yelp and run away and hide because they have been hurt and it is painful.

The heaviest weight lifted unaided by a human is 460kg. A gorilla can lift 2,000kg (as heavy as 30 humans). But the record has to go to the dung beetle which can pull 1,141 times its own body weight. This is equal to an average person pulling six double deck buses full of people!

For many years people believed that animals couldn’t feel pain. They thought that animals were not conscious and therefore were unaware of anything that happened or was done to them. If animals yelped in pain people thought it was a mechanical reaction, like a clock striking at certain times. People thought that all animals were dumb or stupid and had no physical or emotional feelings.

The examples of animal skills I have given are physical and can be measured. Animal sentience however can’t be measured but can be observed. There are hundreds of true stories that illustrate this which will be the topic of another article.

However in the last forty years interest in animal behaviour increased and with the help of modern technology scientists have made many discoveries. Not only are animals capable of skills thought to be unique to humans, but they also experience physical pain and pleasure and a wide range of feelings such as happiness, sadness, boredom, distress and excitement. Such feelings are called sentience and this means that animals are conscious and are aware of their surroundings and what happens to them. What they experience matters to them as much as our experiences matter to us.

A quotation attributed to Albert Einstein seems appropriate, “Every body is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its life believing it is stupid”.

Humans have a massive effect on the lives of billions of animals. Our superiority has resulted in ignoring their individuality, their feelings and their needs. Increasing our knowledge of animals is crucial in improving their lives. They are not stupid, unfeeling mechanical objects, here only for our use and exploitation. They all deserve our compassion, respect and understanding. Elizabeth Allison RSPCA Woodside vice- president

A landmark discovery about animal behaviour was their ability to use tools, a skill previously thought to be uniquely human. They can find objects to enable them to carry out tasks and modify objects to make them more useful. Tool use has been observed in many animals including chimps, orang-utans, dolphins, elephants, otters, crows, rooks parrots and octopuses. Other abilities previously thought to be uniquely human include planning ahead, learning by watching others, having a sense of right and wrong and looking after each other. Some animals play tricks on one another and have a sense of fun. Animals communicate with one another, not necessarily by sounds but also by touch, smell and body language. What we now know means that the difference between animals and humans is not as great as previously thought. It is unlikely there will ever be the equivalent of a Leonardo da Vinci, Beethoven or Shakespeare in the non human animal kingdom. But should we judge or value others, human or non human by what they can’t do? If we do, some human achievements are insignificant compared to those of animals. Seismologists are still trying to find a way to predict earthquakes accurately. It is said that catfish, with their heightened sense of touch can detect them days in advance. Usain Bolt’s top running speed is 27.44 mph. A cheetah has been recorded running at 61mph. Even my cats are capable of running at 30 mph. There are many creatures from a tiny moth to the mighty elephant that have better hearing than humans.

BULBS FOR AUTUMN PLANTING

Daffodils

After what seemed to be an early summer followed by a cloudy and wet July and August it feels like Autumn has approached prematurely! I’m very busy designing gardens for installation and planting throughout the Autumn and Winter and as part of that design process I will be selecting a range of bulbs which will planted amongst the shrubs, perennials and grasses to give an added splash of colour in the early part of the year. I will use a selection of traditional favourites like Daffodils, Tulips and Alliums chosen for their hardiness, suitability for our local clay soils, height and most importantly their colour. I like to create colour combinations which suit the planting designs I’m creating for each client. Tulips are particularly useful for creating waves of colour in that first year whilst the other plants establish. Below are some of my favourites which can be picked up from garden centres now.

Iris

Pastel Tulips

Tulips they are available in every colour under the sun and look stunning through the months of March, April & May. They can be planted directly in the ground or in plastic plots to be plunged into gaps in the border whilst they flower and then lifted out to make space for something else later on. Tulips can look fantastic when planted in blocks for a contemporary look or in waves amongst other perennials. Some of my favourite colour combinations are: ‘Purple &

Orange’ - Queen of the Night (black), Prinses Irene (orange & purple), Ronaldo (burgundy) & Orange Emperor. ‘Soft Pastels’ – White Marvel, Pink Diamond & Shirley (white fringed with purple). Alliums are perfect for adding a late summer pop of colour above herbaceous perennials. Their bold blooms in May and June are typically purple or white tight globes. They are the last of the autumn planted bulbs to bloom in my schemes. If the soil is heavy then I’ll add a handful of grit to the base of the planting hole to aid drainage. I like to plant Alliums in waves through perennial plants, giving them space enough to show off their stunning flowers. ‘Purple Sensation’ is a favourite as they are a reliably perennial mauve flowering variety. I also use ‘Mount Everest’ which holds large white globes on tall stiff stems. Daffodils add such a lovely cheerful splash of colour from February onwards. Planted en masse they look stunning, but I find that little odd clumps in a border can just look messy, so I try to plant waves so they look more natural. Again there’s a huge selection to choose from. Planting several varieties in a garden can prolong the season of interest and they will reliably flower year on year. Look out for the scented varieties that are good for cut flowers too. I tend to use paler varieties in my schemes as I find that the bright yellow belgriersondesign info@belgrierson.co.uk

blooms can be jarring. I like to use ‘Pueblo’ which is a mid height creamy white variety and ‘Yellow Cheerfulness’ which bears softlemon yellow double flowers in clusters and happens to be highly scented too. If using more than one variety in a garden I plant them in separate blocks rather than mix them so they do not become jumbled. Small bulbs can be useful for weaving amongst the front of border plants where they can shine out in early spring. I particularly like Anemone blanda which form gentle carpets of daisy-like flowers which last well in good weather. Anemone ‘White Splendour’ is my favourite although they are available in blue and pink too. Iris reticulata produce very intricately painted small Iris blooms in a range of white, blue and purple. I generally use these in alpine gardens or in pots so that their exquisite flowers do not become swamped and obscured by other plants. All of those above are available now to be planted in October and November – an easy task which will reward you with a wonderful display in Spring. Next month I’ll be looking at biennials like Wallflowers and Forget-me-nots which can also be planted in the autumn, to fill gaps and add a great splash of colour.

presenting the Phil Cross Memorial Trophy to Elspeth Cranston and Ed Darby at the Black Swan Allotments (Leicester Road, Shepshed)

Phil Cross Memorial Trophy Cllr Poole said “It was my pleasure to present the Phil Cross Memorial Trophy to this year’s winner Elspeth And Ed of the best kept allotment congratulations for having such a superb allotment. Everybody at the

allotments does a superb job and it was again a very hard decision to

choose this year’s winner. As always it is my pleasure to support the local allotments as Shepshed Town Council Chairperson.”

Elspeth and Ed replied “We are delighted to receive this prize. It is

particularly pleasing when you see the high standard of growing and care of the other allotment holders. The well run and friendly nature of this

allotment site is in no small measure due to the efforts of the Committee Members and the time they devote to making the site a pleasant

experience for everyone. Chris Butlin in particular gave us a big hand

when we needed it, this is very much in the spirit of allotmenteering. Over the years we have graduated from a third to a half sized plot and over

the last few years have worked hard to maintain the productivity of plot

26 using organic growing techniques. This has not only provided us with

delicious vegetables and fruit to eat but also given us many hours of fresh air, exercise and personal satisfaction. We hope to go on enjoying the fruits of our labours for many years to come”

The Sorcerer Christchurch Gilbert and Sullivan Society are performing The Sorcerer at Hind Leys College Theatre from November 7th to the 11th 2017. Performances start at 7.30 pm except on Saturday 11th which is matinee only, at 2.30 pm. Tickets can be obtained by contacting 01509 504376. The Sorcerer is a fun show, with the cast being given a magic potion which sends them to sleep and on waking fall in love with the first person they see. This obviously results in disastrous situations which can only be remedied by drastic action.

An Adventure In The Lakes With The Calvert Trust The Calvert Trust is a charity whose aim is to challenge disability ‘through outdoor adventure’. The activities include hill walking, rock climbing, abseiling, horse riding, archery, sailing, canoeing and cycling. The whole ethos is to teach the participants what they can do and not what they can’t do, which is often the case in their normal environment. Suitable candidates are sponsored by Rotary Clubs and enjoy a week at the Calvert Trust centre overlooking Lake Bassenthwaite in the Lake District. The club has supported the Trust by donations over several years but this time we decided to find and sponsor our own candidate. A daunting task made easier by joining forces with the Rotary Club of Shepshed under the watchful eye of Rotarian Janet Sinclair.

Janet is a long term supporter and volunteer at the centre, and her experience guided our champions, Mike Hall and Peter Hickling, in the selection of a suitable candidate. After several interviews, the enthusiasm and willingness to take part shown by Rachel (a resident of Shepshed) made her an ideal person for the adventure. After the event Rachel visited both clubs to give us an insight into the activities she took part in. When asked what her favourite activities were she answered "Archery (winner of the competition) and, of course, driving the pony and trap". These small moments encapsulate the mission of the Calvert Trust “Enabling the disabled to achieve their potential through the challenge of adventurous activities”. A truly inspirational evening and our thanks must go to all the supporters and volunteers who make this happen, but the final words must go to the participants like Rachel - Awesome!

The planning authorities have granted outline planning permission for almost 1,800 houses in Shepshed which will be built over the next few years. With many of the developments involved, the planning process has moved on to the next stage which is the granting of detailed planning consent. Granting of detailed planning consent allows the developer to actually make a start of building work. Most of the developments have conditions attached and it is these conditions that we wish to mention. The conditions are designed so that the developer has to satisfy certain requirements. Some of them place limits on the quality of the design of a development (such as parking provision; the location of bins; or even the housing mix which will best meet the local needs). Yet others may refer to the how the work is to be carried out to minimise adverse effects on residents (e.g. working hours); ecological constraints (e.g. trees protected by Tree Protection Orders); restraints required by the water authority (Severn Trent); or restraints required by the Highways Authority (Leicestershire County Council). There is one major problem with this process – the number of developments has increased enormously across the whole of Charnwood (Charnwood Borough Council is the local planning authority) and the number of enforcement officers is too small for them to police all of the current developments. We are therefore asking for your help. If you see a problem with one of the new developments, let us know. If you want to check the conditions relevant to a specific development, they can be found on the Charnwood Borough Council web site (www. Charnwood.gov.uk) using a tool called Planning Explorer which is readily accessed. Finding the site you want to reference can easily be found using the map that shows where developments are to take place or are already in construction. You have several options: • Send an email to any or all of your Borough Councillors (email address below). (Recommended) • Send your complaint to the relevant case officer. If you chose this option, please send a copy to the Borough Councillor so that we know what is happening.

• Noise (mainly from piling). Result: piling is necessary on this site but the hours are restricted. The Contractor is seeking to finish piling as soon as possible.

• Mud on road. Result: Water washer (to clean mud off lorry wheels) will be installed as soon as practical. Meanwhile, there are two road sweepers to keep the roads clean.

• Site work sometimes started at 07:00 hours. Result: Stopped. Site

work is only allowed to start at 07:30, which is standard for building

works local to a residential environment. Finishing hours are regulated depending on the day of the week. No work is allowed on Sundays.

• Lorries queueing to enter the site were parking on Hathern Road. This

section of road is particularly dangerous as there have been two fatalities and other non-fatal accidents, caused by traffic speeding down the hill. Result: The Site Manager stopped multiple deliveries and Councillor

Radford arranged with the Highways department at the County Council for the lorries to be allowed to park on the bus turning circle outside Campbell Scientific temporarily, so that they would not cause an obstruction on Hathern Road.

• Water management. The developer has been working with Severn

Trent and the County Council to minimise the adverse effects of springs and ground water on the site.

• Hedge clearance. The Contractor removed a section of hedge between the site entrance and the motorway in error. The hedge should only

have been removed local to the site entrance to improve visibility at the T-junction. Result: The hedge will be replaced.

• The motorway will create a lot of noise. Result: The developer has

been working with the relevant authorities to minimise the noise and will install noise attenuation.

New Members are welcome to attend the Changes Friendship and Well-being group based at the Glenmore Community Centre on Thorpe Street. Meetings are on Wednesdays between 1pm and 3pm. Members meet to enjoy learning new arts and craft skills, making healthy snacks and treats plus inviting speakers to tell everyone about community groups and activities and information that will enable the members to live healthier lives, learn a new hobby and access other agencies that will improve their wellbeing. Everyone is very friendly and often meet up in Shepshed to enjoy a coffee and chat. There is a charge of £1.50 for refreshments and activities. For more information please call Julie on 01509 650662. It was deeply disappointing to be told in July that the Government does not intend to electrify the Midland Mainline – the intercity train line connecting Leicestershire to London. The electrification project was confirmed by the Department for Transport in 2012 after many years of lobbying. I had helped to lead a cross-party campaign of MPs who worked with councillors, LEPs and business leaders up and down the line to make the case, both economic and environmental for our line to be electrified. At a time when the Government is wanting us to move from diesel to electric cars it makes no sense to give the ok to trains

and an intercity line which will still create diesel fumes. Millions of pounds has already been spent on preparing the line for electrification. Although we will still get some of the other planned improvements which will improve journeys I do feel it is very unfair that the Midlands should lose out on this major investment because the costs of other electrification projects in other parts of the country have been higher than expected. I shall continue to call for our line to be electrified and to work with local councils and businesses on this. Congratulations to everyone who recently collected their GCSE and A level results. Good luck to those moving on to new challenges including those moving from primary to secondary school. September 2017 is a particularly exciting time for secondary education in Shepshed because we will see the merger of Shepshed High School and Hind Leys College into an 11 - 19 through school under the new name of Iveshead School. We will also see the Year 6s staying in their existing primary schools which is another big change, but one I know everyone is prepared for. I wish all pupils and staff a great start to their term. Finally if you are thinking ahead to the October half-term don’t forget to book your tickets for the next wonderful Loogabarooga Festival which takes place across Loughborough from the 18th – 24th October. More details at www.loogabarooga.com
