Shepshed Probus Club
Free 'Everyone In Harmony' And “Time To Sing“ Course
A meeting of Shepshed Probus Club was held J23 Restaurant where members were welcomed by Mr Pat Harris. The usual club business was conducted before prayers were said and we then sat down for our lunch after which we were introduced to our speaker, Alison Wakeman who spoke about bees and the environment. Alison, who lives near Telford, originally came from Kirkby Muxloe and she started collecting bees a while ago. She has a number of hives scattered round the country, having 6 in her garden in Telford. She visits schools and organisations to talk about bees and how they affect our lives.
Due to the overwhelming success of last year’s Learn to sing course in February and October we are holding another course from Monday 3rd September through to November. This one will be open to both men and women, boys and girls as part of our 44 year celebration
There are 250 different bees in this country. 225 are solitary, like miner bees and leaf-cutter bees to name two, 24 bumble bees and 1 common drone bee. The drone bees live in hives with one queen, up to 800 males and 60,000 females. The male bees do nothing in the hive. Everything is left to the females who have a constructive and progressive organisation such as builder, nursery, ventilator, forager and undertaker bee. The forager bee is by far the greater number and are the ones which go out to collect pollen and nectar. The male bees go out of the hive and have to stay out as they are not allowed back in by the females. Bees make two products: honey and beeswax which makes a brilliant polish. Honey tastes different depending on the flowers the bees are collecting from. Alison confessed that she has been stung quite a number of times, including by a swarm of wasps, and it still hurts. She brought in samples of honey and beeswax plus the components of how a hive is constructed as well as a skep which is a large raffia cone, also used as a hive. Bees have few enemies but two which can’t be ignored are the varroa mite, a blood sucking mite and the European hornet which can, along with its pals, decimate a hive in a day. Alison gave us many more facts and figures after which she was thanked by the members of the club who were reminded that the next meeting would be on 3rd September when the speaker will give a talk on “Fun in the Fifties”.
So come on why not be part of 'Everyone in Harmony' The free 'Everyone in Harmony' course is being held by Heart of England Chorus at the Birstall Social Club, Wanlip Lane, Birstall LE4 4JS Aimed at both newcomers and those who have not sung for a while, the course is to encourage more men and women young and old to take up singing, which is increasingly acknowledged as being an aid to a healthy lifestyle. There are many men who would love to sing but most never get around to trying, don’t have the opportunity or maybe are too self-conscious to give it a go but the simple fact is that just about everyone can sing. Attendees learn within a group which makes it less daunting, there are no embarrassing public auditions and it’s With the professional help of our Musical Director Ian Phillips and Assistant MD Jim Pollock participants will be helped to discover their voice, learn the techniques of making the most of it and how to use it in four-part acappella harmony with others. There’s no need to worry about reading music as the teaching methods employed are designed to help quickly learn specially-commissioned songs. For men and women who haven't sung for a few years this course is the perfect way to ease their vocal chords back into action. Regular singers may also find the course useful to learn different voice parts, in a relaxed and friendly environment. The course will run from 7.30pm to 10.00pm All the material will be provided with access to course teaching materials. 5 Great Finishing Touches For Your Wedding By Timmy @PartySaveSmile.co.uk Hey folks, Timmy from www.PartySaveSmile.co.uk here, This month I wanted to share a few simple ideas to add some great finishing decorative touches to a wedding. Weddings are all about personal touches and themes and it is the personal touches that make a big day just perfect for you. They can also be expensive, so I wanted to put together some great value personal touches to tie in with your occasion and budget! There are loads of things you could do and we would be happy to help, but here are a few of my favourites. 1) Bubble Balloons: Nothing says wow factor more than one of our Bubble Balloons. Great for personalising and theming your wedding to the right colour. We are often asked to fill bubble balloons with a message balloon, confetti and even feathers. Our Bubble Balloons are perfect for ceremony rooms, down the aisle, top tables and as a centrepiece. They will certainly have your guests marvelling at them!
2) Balloon Centrepieces the perfect arrangement of balloons make a great table centrepiece. Being up in the air they mean your guests can freely communicate and chat across the table without any obstructions! I love balloon bouquets and tailoring them to our customers wedding colour scheme or theme. They look stunning when co-ordinated with your venue type and other decorations. 3) Puff and Honeycomb Decorations are the perfect to elegantly decorate your venue in your colour scheme. They add depth and structure and link all of our décor together. Pastel colours, whites and silvers are perfect, but there are loads of colours to suit your theme if you are looking for something more vibrant! Choose from puff balls, honeycomb diamonds and chandeliers, fan decorations, lanterns and pom poms.
4) Arrow Directions are a great way to point your guests in the right direction to your happily ever after. Rustic and chic you can use them to point out where the ceremony, reception and car park are. They are practical but decorative and are perfect for any wedding theme. 5) Confetti is not just perfect for throwing, but has a huge impact when used decoratively. Our comprehensive range of satin confetti petals, and biodegradable paper confetti add a romantic element to a venue, effortlessly creating an added feel of love and romance. Used sparingly they look stunning. With our range you can even colour co-ordinate! At www.PartySaveSmile.co.uk we aim to give our customers a friendly consultative service, with expert advice coupled with classic wedding decorations combined with on trend and bespoke touches. If you are planning a wedding and are looking for decorations, balloons or have a venue that you need dressing our friendly team are here to help. Feel free to drop in to our showroom in Coalville on the Whitwick Business Park. We stock a large range of wedding decorations, balloons and even gifts for the big day. We offer the same service for Wedding Anniversaries and Engagements too. Call us on 01530 820 010 or visit our showroom at Unit 16 The Courtyard, Stenson Road, Coalville, LE67 4JP.
Shepshed History Society August 14th on a lovely summers evening the Shepshed History Society had a private and very enjoyable tour of the Hough windmill and surrounding ancient coal mines in Swannington. Mr Roger Bisgrove an experienced guide gave the group a highly in depth tour of the surrounding mines and explained how our ancestors were employed to work in this industry in days of old. Whole families had to work in getting the coal out of the bell pits and there were countless fatalities in this industry as the centuries progressed despite mining getting more modernised. The group was taken round the various stages of this industry as fortunately today there is still a life size model of the gin mechanism and horse that enables the visitor to see into the past. Remains of miners cottages were to be seen as well as a Newcomen steam engine which drove a beam engine that removed the floods from the mines. After a welcome coffee break the society was given a fascinating tour of the windmill by Mr Bill Pemberton. Previously a ruin, it had been rescued by mill enthusiasts until today when it is nearly back to its former glory. Mr Pemberton went onto to explain how the flour was milled by the various machine parts and the group had a fascinating tour to the top of the mill to witness these massive parts in situ. The mill and the mines are open to the public on a Sunday afternoon in the summers months and are well worth a visit. On September 11th the meeting will be given by Mr Robin Jenkins and the subject is to be The Shirley Pedigree. Newcomers are always welcome.

Britain’s Got Talent Finalist Kieran Sutcliffe Comes Home To Perform A One Off Concert Kieran Sutcliffe is one of the most acclaimed and sought after Tenors in The UK and Internationally to date. He has performed all over the world including London’s West End in concert and of course in front of 20 million Viewers as he performed as a live finalist on the (ITV) smash hit TV Talent show ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ back in 2014 with his partner in crime Sarah. He has had the pleasure of working with so many great talented artistes in his last 10 years as a professional. He is originally from Shepshed born and bred and went to Oxley Primary School before moving up to Shepshed High School then later Hind Leys Community College as now known as (Iveshead School). This was where Kieran found his love for singing, dancing and acting. He decided to take GCSE Dance and Music as an option and loved it that much decided to join local dance group run by the fabulous Linda Dootson called Shepshed Youth Dance. Linda was a great asset to me growing up she pushed me to pursue what I loved doing which was performing to the highest of my abilities I can’t thank her enough for this. I then started listening to musicals a lot and watching great musical films by Rogers & Hammerstein and found myself mesmerised by all the beautiful singing, the gushing romantic story lines the big energetic dance numbers, costumes songs the lot it really took my breathe away and they still do now to this day. So this particular Xmas at college we always do a big musical show and this particular year it was ‘Grease’ I’d seen the film and loved it so decided to put my name down to audition. It was nerve racking just putting my name on a piece of paper let alone going in to audition but I wanted to play the role of Danny Zuko so bad I decided to pester my mum for singing lessons to get me ready as we had to sing the classic song ‘Sandy’ which might I add is a very big song and I wanted to nail it with my everything and every big note. So I went to the Lovely Derek a local singing teacher who was based in Loughborough, he really taught me how to sing scales, how to use my breathe through singing and really widened my repertoire it was a whole new experience for me as I never had to use any of these muscles ever before it was almost like an out of body
experience knowing the things I could do with my voice it really surprised me and Derek. As soon as I discovered these muscles and that I could sing that was it then I decided this is what I want to pursue as a profession and never looked back since. I went back to school with all the practice I could get and asked my music teacher Pete Fines he was called if I can have a little practice with piano just to get a feel for the room and how it’s going to go as the audition was coming up the week after. Now he never heard me sing before as I was known as a dancer and I sang for him it went great, everything I learned I really focused and put it into practice. I remember him turning round to me after and saying ‘where did you get a voice like that’ if you keep that up you will have a very long career in the profession keep at it!’ I was 15 years old at this time, those words have stuck with me ever since. After that Pete was another very supportive teacher and really believed in me which was great both him and Linda were an asset to me and pursuing the best of my abilities I couldn’t thank them enough. The week after I went and auditioned and managed to get the lead role Danny Zuko it was a great achievement and I was so pleased. The show went amazing with great reviews, great feedback and that was it then I wouldn’t stop performing. I remember the following year I was 16 just finished my GCSE’s and we needed 5 Cs or above to go into A level, unfortunately I only got 3 so couldn’t stay on however the Xmas musical was ‘Les Misérables’ my favourite musical of all time. I got cast as ‘Marius’ the romantic lead made famous by The fabulous Michael Ball. It turned out I wouldn’t be able to do it as I wasn’t taking A levels so I decided to stay on and start a GNVQ in Business studies just so I could do the show, terrible I know but all I wanted to do is perform so luckily I stayed on till after Xmas did the show then left. After leaving college I was part of a local Amateur Theatre Group called Christchurch Theatre Club now known as (CTC) where I played Some great roles and learnt a lot I played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar at 16 then played Tony in West Side Story probably my all-time favourite role and then Nick in Fame. Alongside (CTC) I really wanted to pursue
my musical theatre career so I auditioned for the BTEC musical Theatre course at Brooksby Melton College again I needed 5 Cs and above to go on the course however I owe the biggest thank you to Mark Frisby who was the head of course at the time he heard me sing for my audition. I did Empty Chairs at Empty tables from Les Misérables and we had to meet him afterwards me and my mum and he said in the last 7 years I’ve been teaching that’s one of the best auditions I’ve heard, you really have something Kieran. As you know you don’t qualify for the course however I’m going to put my time in you if you need the extra help to get through these next 2 years so would love to offer you a place on our musical Theatre course. I was so happy I almost started crying because all I wanted to do was sing and perform. I finished the course with flying colours and a distinction. I’m still very good friends with Mark till this day I really owe him everything for letting me climb that next step of the ladder for me to get to the top. Now I’d done my Musical Theatre BTEC I was ready for London. I auditioned for 2 top Musical Theatre Schools Guildford School Of Acting where Michael Ball trained and Mountview Academy Of Theatre Arts both for the BA Hons Musical Theatre Course I was very fortunate and got offered a scholarship and place in both colleges I couldn’t believe it! I mean people talented people travelling from all over the world to get in these top schools and I was offered a place and scholarship in both it was one of the best times of my life. The hard bit was deciding which one to go too as they were both top. I remember having a tally chart trying to weigh up good and bad for each but that didn’t work. Anyway I went to Mountview Academy Of Theatre Arts in the end for 3 years coming out with a degree in musical Theatre and of course a top London West End agent who I’m still with to this day
Shane Collins Associates, they have been fantastic been with them nearly 10 years to this day and I’ve done some great jobs with them I’m very thankful. When I was in Drama school I had the opportunity to audition for The BBC Fame Academy scholarship there was 500 people from all other top theatre schools for 50 scholarships and I was very fortunate in winning and being one of those 50 people which really helped towards my living expenses in London as it’s extremely expensive to live and study there. I had a wonderful time growing up learning new skills and meeting new people in a craft that I absolutely adore and love. I’m very fortunate now as I get to perform all over the world my own show that I put together which is great fun. Also this brand new duo I’m in with my good friend Luke Sabatino another well-established professional performer. Luke has toured the world for the last 12 years on Luxury Cruise ships all over as a singer. We met weirdly at an audition day and just hit it off straight away and before we knew it we were throwing all these ideas at each other about this new show singing the songs of the kings of The West End Michael Ball & Alfie Boe. It’s so great together we have come up with this brand new concept that we are both very proud of and put a lot of work into. It’s been Live now round 8 months and we have received cracking response from all over 5 reviews and very generous standing ovations. I cannot wait to bring it to The Iveshead Theatre in Shepshed where it all started out for me and where I first performed my first ever show which was Grease. It’s certainly going to bring back great memories. If you haven’t yet then please get your tickets from the Shepshed Council Offices for Friday The 5th October 19.15pm start. £10 each and we are fundraising for the Shepshed Community Bus.

County Councillor
Christine Radford
T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com As your County Councillor, I am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire County Council. Such as street lighting, highways, footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges into the highways, social services etc. Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) A TTRO is to allow Leicestershire County Council to facilitate gully cleansing works in Forest Street on Wednesday 17th October. The TTRO will incorporate a temporary parking restriction in Forest Street. A Press Release will be issued to confirm these details approximately 2 weeks prior to the works commencing. These works are necessary to enable rain water to drain away from highways and not cause flooding issues. Gullies get emptied regularly by County, if you have concerns about a gully near to your property then please get in touch. Ash Dieback Ash dieback is now present throughout Leicestershire and is particularly evident on young trees, new shoots and in young plantations, mainly in the northwest of the county; there is very little evidence of the disease affecting mature trees. There are no exact figures of the number of ash trees in Leicestershire. However it is estimated that there may be over 500,000 ash trees in the county. In terms of County Council controlled land, there are 6,020 recorded ash trees on adopted highway verges with a further 120,00 plus ash trees in private ownership within falling distance of the highway. In addition, there are 2,014 recorded ash trees on school and other County Council sites. It is prudent to assume that the disease may result in the loss of between 75% and 90% of ash trees in Leicestershire. However, the levels of decline and mortality that will result are matters of considerable uncertainty. The potential loss of trees in Leicestershire and the adverse effect on the county’s landscape
is a significant consideration. It is essential that a robust replanting programme forms a major part of the authority’s approach to managing ash dieback. Although the authority currently runs a suite of schemes to encourage landowners to plant trees, a much wider ranging approach with significantly increased targets is required. A range of suitable native and naturalised tree species, appropriate to the planting location should be made available to encourage early replacement planting to mitigate ash dieback. Unitary Authority The Leader of Leicestershire County Council Mr. N. Rushton has launched a consultation on a new council for Leicestershire. This would see all current district and county councils abolished and replaced by a single, new, all-purpose council. Any new council for Leicestershire would see empowered Town and Parish Councils (for those wanting them) with a greater say over local planning decisions in conjunction with new Area Executive/ committees (with significant budgets) making decisions on licensing and other issues devolved to them. These arrangements are in place in other areas that went unitary in 2009 (e.g. Cornwall, Wiltshire). At the strategic level, a single new council would be part of a Strategic Alliance with other local authorities, including Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire CC. This is to rebalance the power of the West Midlands and is an opportunity for the East Midlands to get its act together bidding for funding for strategic housing and planning, infrastructure and transport, as under the current 2 tier structure, we’re at the back of the queue. A letter has been sent from the Leaders of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire to the Secretary of State seeking a meeting to discuss the proposed East Midlands Strategic Alliance. It was recommended at the Cabinet meeting on 6th July that the timetable for consideration be
as follows: • 16th October it will go to Cabinet to consider outline proposals and agree to engage with stakeholders on options. • 14th November it will go to Scrutiny Commission to comment on the outline proposals • 23rd November it will go to Cabinet to consider the outcome of stakeholder engagement and the way forward • 5th December it will go to Full Council to debate the proposed way forward recommend by the Cabinet School’s Recycling Poster Competition A competition was open to schools in Leicestershire to design an eye catching poster to encourage others to recycle more, all Key Stage 2 and 3 year pupils were able to apply. 60+ pupils entered the competition and a pupil from Burton on the Wolds Primary School won. I was part of the panel that picked the winning design. I presented the pupil with a book voucher for £10 and the school received a £50 book token. Shepshed Library I reported in the August edition of the Shepshed Eye that Shepshed Library was on the list to be
adapted into a Smart Library. I have now been informed that this is due to take place from 17th September for 2 weeks in order that the technology can be installed. Library customers will be alerted to the closure through notices in the library, on their website and via social media. Specific groups who use the library will be contacted by the staff. Community groups will be encouraged to use the library during Smart library times as a free meeting space. Your Help Again I would like to thank the residents who keep me informed regarding issues around Shepshed, such as overgrown hedges, litter, dog mess etc., without your eyes and ears I could not get them reported and sorted. For help and advice on County matters, I can be contacted on 502974 or e mail christine_ radford@hotmail.com or christine. radford@leics.gov.uk or come along to my monthly Surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council Offices, 47a Charnwood Road 10-11am.

Borough Councillor
Christine Radford
T: 01509 502974 M: 07796 544817 E: christine_radford@hotmail.com We can be contacted on matters concerning Charnwood Borough Council. We deal with housing problems, (such as trying to move house, unsatisfactory improvement work being carried out on your Council property) problems with neighbours, AntiSocial Behaviour, whether or not you live in a Council property or a privately owned property. We also deal with planning issues.
Ward Cllrs Radford and Tassell are still concerned that the odour could have a detrimental effect on the neighbours living in Belvoir Way and surrounding areas. They have asked that constant monitoring is carried out.
Planning P/14/1833/2 Outline Planning Permission For Residential Development Up To 3,200 Dwellings The permission for the above was issued on 20th July following the signing of the S106. The area for the above development is known locally as Garendon Park, which is situated on land between the M1, Shepshed and Hathern.
Cllr Radford and Tassell ask the residents to contact them should they experience any problems from this site such as noise, odour etc.
It has been nearly 2 years since the plans Committee at Charnwood approved this application but it has taken all this time for all the legal issues and the S106 be agreed and signed off. The plans include 16 hectares of employment land, mixed-use community hub and a 2,000 sq. m food store and up to 1,000 sq. m of other retail, financial and professional services and food and drink use. Sites are also set aside for gypsies, travellers and travelling showpeople totalling one hectare. There will also be two new primary schools no secondary schools as there is enough room at Iveshead and Charnwood academies. The restoration of Garendon Park and its assets are also included in the plans. P/18/1633/2 1, Garendon Close An application for the erection of one detached bungalow has just been deposited at Charnwood. This application can be viewed quoting P/18/1633/2. P/17/2467/2 1 Gelders Hall (Meggitt) - Amendments The above application is for the installation of 4 internal spray booths with 4 x external exhaust stacks and 4 x external air intake stacks, plus associated equipment. Plus further outlets for internal paint mixing and an abrasion room. Additional supporting information regarding an Odour Assessment has just been submitted. Your
This application was considered on Thursday 23rd August by the plans committee at Charnwood. Officers recommended approval.
Planning Updates P/17/2128/2 – erection of 8 dwellings with associated garages, gardens, access and associated works on land off Saley Close has been withdrawn. P/11/2724/2 – Outline application for residential development for up to 133 dwellings on land off Oakley Road which was granted permission on 10th December 2014. A reserved Matters application was received but was withdrawn by the applicant on 29th March 2018. As such there is now no extant planning application for this site. This does not stop a new application being lodged with Charnwood, but any developer will have to start again and apply for outline planning. National Planning Policy Framework - 5 Year Housing Supply Charnwood Borough Council issued a statement which stated that: “You may be aware that on Tuesday 24th July 2018 the Government published its revised National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). As expected this has changed the way five year supply is calculated and Charnwood are now able to demonstrate it has 5.93 years of housing supply." "The figures should be viewed with some caution at this stage, as the government has not published its detailed guidance on the interpretation to be given to the policy and this is therefore officer’s initial interpretation of the approach to be taken to the calculation. However, officers and the plans committee will rely on this figure when making planning decisions in the interim. Officers will continue to monitor the five year supply figures and will update if there are any further significant changes”
A copy of the revised calculation and the new NPPF can be accessed on www.gov.uk/ government/publications/ national-planning-policyframework-2 Work Continues On Loughborough Market Plan Plans to refresh Loughborough Markets are continuing to be worked upon by Charnwood and traders. Regular meetings are being held between traders, officers and councillors as they look to improve the town’s award-winning markets. Work has started on creating a stronger identity for the markets to help promote them better; the layout is being looked at. The Council also wants to host more regular entertainment and strengthen the markets’ food offering. Last year Loughborough was named the best large outdoor market in the country and Council is looking to build on that success for the good of the town, traders and residents. The Council is looking at introducing new branding for the markets to give them a stronger identity, building on their heritage particularly as 2021 will mark 800 years of market being held in the centre of Loughborough. The branding, due to be ready towards the end of the year, will help promotion and marketing. The Council also wants to build upon the food offering and have more regular entertainment, This is already happening as the markets now have new food traders and traders have arranged entertainment and music on various market days. The main markets are held on a Thursday and Saturday, with a vintage market on a Friday and then the monthly farmers’ market held on the second Wednesday of each month. New Cemetery Site In Loughborough A consultation to find a new cemetery site in Loughborough has been launched as the current cemetery in Leicester Road is expected to be full within four years. You may ask what has this to do with Shepshed residents but at some time in the not too distance future Shepshed cemetery will be full. Charnwood have identified three viable options which could provide future burial space. These are land at Allendale Road, Nanpantan and part of Shelthorpe Golf Course. Charnwood says nine holes would be retained as part of
an improved facility. The consultation runs until September 23rd and people can have a say and find out more at www.charnwood.gov.uk/ cemetery_consultation Taxi Removed From Road Following Inspections Two taxis were taken off the road following inspections carried out by Charnwood Borough Council officers and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Seventeen taxis reported to the temporary inspection centre and Council officers worked with two DVSA vehicle examiners to check the drivers met the requirements of their licence and the vehicles were roadworthy. Two vehicles were served immediate prohibition notices due to brake defects, and could not operate until the vehicles were brought up to standard and new MOT certificates were presented to the Council. Seven vehicles received advice notices regarding lights, wipers, suspensions, tyres and brake defects. Four warnings were given to drivers for not wearing or displaying their driver badge clearly. These checks are carried out several times a year with the aim to make sure standards are being met by local drivers and operators and the public can have confidence in using them. Anyone concerned about a taxi or its driver can contact the Council on 01509 634562 or emailing licensing@charnwood.gov.uk. On-Going Issues Planning and Anti-Social behaviour (majority of it confidential) is still taking up a large amount of our time. Do not hesitate to contact us should you have issues you wish to discuss with us. We shall continue to hold our regular monthly surgery on the FIRST Saturday of the month in the Town Council offices, Charnwood Road, from 10-11am. No appointments are necessary.
