Unique Double for Anstey

A lot of local residents will have heard about local lad Dan Greaves winning gold in the discus event at the European Paralympic Athletics in Swansea in August this year. What you might not have heard is that the person who officially presented Dan with his gold medal is also from Anstey.

As the photo shows, the presentation was made by Penny Broomhead, a local from Bradgate Road in Anstey. Penny was the Chief Classifier at the European Paralympic Athletics and she was in charge of the classification procedure that assessed physical, visual & intellectual impairment for the athletes who took part in the 5 day event in Swansea. Classification is a way of providing fair competition by grouping athletes of similar impairment so that the winner is the best athlete and does not have a physical advantage over other competitors. Penny, who is a physiotherapist, has been classifying disabled athletes for over 15 years and she has been all over the world classifying at Paralympic athletic events. Penny and Dan have known each other for many years now and they were delighted that they both had a starring role in the presentation. So Congratulations Dan and keep up the good work, Penny.

Anstey Youth Café Volunteers The Anstey Youth Café is a youth club for local 11-19 year olds. The Café is run by a team of professional youth workers and volunteers, and we are looking for additional helpers – experience not essential. lunchtime supervisor. If you are interested in this position, please find further details in our advert in this edition or enquire at the school office for an application pack.

Before we sign off for this edition, a special congratulations must go to our previous Year 6 pupils, class of 2014, who gained Latimer’s highest ever end of Key Stage 2 SATs results and far exceeded national expectations for their age group. We hope they are settling into life in their new High Schools and that they continue to enjoy their work – we are all very proud of you! Special congratulations must go to Charu Patel for achieving Level 6 in not one but two subjects – our first ever Latimer pupil to achieve this; and Molly Bott for winning the school’s, “Delia Brock trophy” in recognition of exceptional progress and outstanding positive attitude. We look forward to seeing which of our current year 6 pupils will be the recipients of our trophy at the end of this year and to working with our younger pupils across the school to identify and nurture all of our future stars.

With warm regards from all at Latimer, Claire Mitchell & Emma Turner Co Head teachers 1 1TH O CT OBER 10am - 1 pm

The term ahead This term is packed full of exciting events which we hope will be enjoyed by pupils and families alike. Highlights planned so far for this term include: visits to Twycross zoo; Harvest festival celebrations; “Expect Respect” week; Year 6 residential outdoor pursuits visit; discos

We are always keen to involve families in the life and work of the school and would invite families to join our school’s any interested “FOALS” team. This group of parents and families work tirelessly to raise funds to benefit all of our pupils. Please enquire at the school office if you are interested in helping to fundraise or have any ideas for future fundraising events. We also currently have a vacancy for a

sharing books with an adult is a key part of developing reading and we are hoping to ensure that all children get even more experience of this special activity by recruiting willing volunteers to come and read and chat with our pupils about their books. No experience is necessary, just a love of reading and a willingness to support our pupils.

Changes We have also appointed two new class teachers to reflect the popularity of our school and subsequent rise in pupil numbers. We welcome Mr Robinson into Key Stage 1 and Miss Ross into Key Stage 2. We look forward to working with them during the year and know they will be an asset to our hardworking and happy teaching team. There have also been lots of changes to the school building and grounds to accommodate our new classes and a huge thanks goes to our premises officer Mr Moore for ensuring our children have such high quality classrooms to enjoy this year.

organised by our parent fundraisers “FOALS” (friends of Anstey Latimer); anti bullying week; puppet shows; enterprise week; Christmas productions; and our “Winter Festival” to name a few. We hope to keep you updated with photographs and reports of these events later in the term. Many thanks must go to our Assistant Headteacher, Mrs. Cooke for her exceptional work in creating a new curriculum for our children across Key Stages 1 and 2. You can find out more and share our experiences by visiting our school website at http://www.latimerprimary.org.uk/ Vacancies/Getting involved

A very warm welcome back to the new school year from all at The Latimer. This year sees lots of new starters, both pupils and staff. We would like to say a very special “hello” to all of our new starters in EYFS and their families, who are beginning school for the very first time. Our new intake have settled exceptionally well under the care and expertise of our EYFS team, headed up by our Deputy, Mrs Swarbrook and EYFS teacher Mrs Pyatt. We hope our new starters are coming home full of happy chatter about all their new learning and experiences.

Could you be a reading champion? We are currently looking for parent or family volunteers to support reading across the school. If you are able to give a little of your time to help read with our pupils across the school, please contact your child’s class teacher or the school office. Enjoying and

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not

just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Anstey WI

Anstey WI ran a very successful stall at the Anstey Gala this year. The emphasis was on cakes, preserves and craft items made by members, and some customers bought multiple items, boosting the institute’s funds considerably.

Film Presentations

From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council "Saving Mr Banks", shown in September, was a funny, magical & moving film. Members of the large audience were frustrated by P.L. Travers' stubbornness about signing over the film rights to her book, "Mary Poppins". By seeing episodes of her life as a child, we realised how important it was to "Save the reputation of her father, Mr Banks". “Mandela - Long Walk to Freedom" will be shown on Friday October 17th and lasts 139 minutes.

The photograph shows Chris Figgins, Ann Coney and Krystyna Killam on the stall.

The speaker for the monthly meeting shortly afterwards was unable to come, following a bereavement, so member Chris Figgins stepped into the breach, and told of her travels since her retirement. Her map of the world was liberally plastered with red dots showing where she has been. Unlike most retired people, Chris does not look for the lap of luxury. She has done a camel trek, camped under the stars (no tent or other shelter) and canoed, even blackwater rafting, through caves and tunnels. Our intrepid traveller amazed everyone with her tales of derring do. It was most entertaining, and nobody was too disappointed that the planned speaker had had to cancel.

LADIES CIRCLE COFFEE MORNING Saturday October 11th 10-11.30 am Methodist Hall, Howe Lane, Rothley Stalls: ,Tombola, Raffle, Home made cakes, White Elephant and Handmade Christmas cards and Christmas Decorated bags Our charity this year is,' Make a Wish' Admission is a £1 inc. tea/ coffee and biscuit

Please support this very worthy course :-)

Starring Naomie Harris and Idris Elba, this film is drawn from the memoirs of the South African statesman, Nelson Mandela. It stretches from his childhood to his almost unbelievable inauguration. It delves into the complex politics as well as difficult relationships within his family. Elba brings out the courageous determination of Mandela and his charismatic personality. This has been the greatest challenge of Elba's acting career. "The Monuments Men" will be shown on Friday November 14th and lasts 118 minutes. Based on a true story, a WW11 platoon begins the task of recovering stolen masterpieces from the hands of Nazi Germany. Claire, played by Cate Blanchett, was risking her life by noting down every piece of artwork that was being taken. This allowed the Monuments Men, one of whom is played by Hugh Bonneville of “Downton Abbey”, to go in after D-Day to try to locate the art as it was being “spirited” away. This film blends excitement with comedy. “About Time" will be shown on Friday December 12th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £4-50 and concessions are £4. The price includes refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be reserved via the parish office - 0116 236 7626 or bought at the door.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello again everyone, well I am sitting here starting to write my latest report on September 19th. after a long night hoping that the Scottish people would vote to stay in the UK, and thankfully they did. Puzzling thing was that when the result was announced at 6am, not long after a Yes person came on TV and said “Don’t worry we will be back!” Now my understanding was that if the vote had gone “Yes” to leave the UK then it was irreversible? Surely that should work both ways? We shall see. Hmm Mr Salmond has resigned I really didn’t see that one coming, very odd. MITCHELLS FIELD PASSED. Conclusions Taking account of all the issues, the proposal would enhance sport provision within the village and meet an identified need in the locality. The design and impact of the proposal is considered to be acceptable, taking into account the effects on highway safety, nature conservation and residential amenities. The proposals generally comply with the policies and guidance outlined, and in the absence of tenable reasons to refuse. It is recommended that planning permission is granted. It’s taken a long time but it seems we have got there at last. Thank you. RECOMMENDATION: Grant Conditionally L.C.F.C. Legends The former Leicester City heroes descended on the Cropston Road ground on a lovely Sunday afternoon in September to play a mixture of old Nomads players and young Anstey Swifts. The Nomads/Swifts kept the score down to 2-0 at half time and the home team got a goal back before the LCFC legends turned on the style and ran out 7-2 winners. Goals came from Carl Heggs (3),

Matt Piper was also on target, plus goals from guest players, former Tigers winger Steve Booth (2) and an absolute screamer from the former European and Commonwealth super-bantamweight boxing champion Rendell Munroe. The legends were captained by Steve Walsh. A great afternoon out for the very large crowd. The only disappointment was the unavailability of more legends such as Muzzy Izzet, Matt Elliott, Julian Joachim and Gerry Taggart.

is open to anyone that is struggling to make ends meet, on Mondays from 11am to 1pm. The Soar Valley Community Food Project is jointly run by Rothley Parish and the Rothley Baptist Churches and is open to anyone who is basically “in a mess.” As well as the “free” food parcels there will also be assistance on hand to help with other matters that may be troubling you. The aim is to support people to a better future by helping them in the short term to put food on the table and to help them find a way out of their present crisis. This will all be done in a relaxed manner over a drink and a biscuit or two. If you require any more information on how to make things better for you and your family or indeed in a position to be able to donate money or food please get in touch with the project co-ordinator Tim Jackson 07743 765 958. Other star guests included singer Jersey Budd. Good to see Tambo, Macka, Wedge, Martin Booty, Schultzy, Ryan Sutherington and Deano for the Nomads. The goal scorers for the home side however came from Anstey Swifts U.16 side. Ched Gore and penalty from Charlie Morton who gave Carl Muggleton no chance. FOOD PARCELS. Rothley. Lots of people around the Charnwood area have used the free food bank in Loughborough over the last few years, now there is one just opened a lot nearer to home, at the Baptist Church, Woodgate, Rothley. Anstey Gala Day. Good weather, crowd, acts, dog show and organisation plus a variety of different stalls and rides, who could ask for more. I did get there for a couple of hours and walked round most of the stalls which was a feat in itself! Thank you to all those who wished me well. Hopefully I will be able to get a bit more involved again next year. Civic Service I finally made a short excursion back into the public domain by attending the Civic Service for my fellow councillor Paul Day Mayor of Charnwood, at St Mary’s Parish Church Anstey on Sunday September 14th. I read the 2nd lesson Matthew 25 v 31-40. It was a well attended special occasion that went off like clockwork. I however was very nervous. Anstey’s Latimer Street School Choir were lovely, brought back memories of 57 years ago and Mr Lister!!! Age UK. ☹ It is my understanding that the AGE UK charity shop which has been in the Nook Anstey for many years is to close in late October after the owners refused to re-new the lease. I hope they find somewhere new to operate soon and the premises will NOT be left empty for any length of time as the former HSBC bank has been. I believe there is a petition in the shop.

Want a Green-house? I have one in my back garden which needs dismantling and taking away! Most of the glass is still there. I have also a number of Classical/from the shows LP records and a 2 drawer filing cabinet available. Any donations will be given to the Anstey Town Charity. Let me know if you are interested… And Finally, I couldn’t finish without a mention?? SHOCKED! Well it started on Thursday with a nightmare cricket performance by Leicestershire County Cricket Club losing in 2 days to Essex. Didn’t get any better on Saturday, I saw the Tigers overwhelmed by Bath Rugby 45-0. Then early Sunday afternoon I dreamt that Leicester City beat Manchester United 5 – 3 after being 1-0, 2-0 and 3-1 down. It was just a dream wasn’t it???? Tee Hee. *Oh, and congratulation to Anstey & Glenfield Cricket Club on securing promotion with a win over Loughborough Greenfields on the last day of the season, but commiserations to Cropston CC who just missed out.

Cllr. John J. Sutherington. Anstey, Leicester, England. The UK.

Apply online for secondary school places Parents are urged to look out for the school place application packs for children who transfer to secondary school in the autumn term 2015 that will be landing on their doormats over the next couple of weeks. Remember that moving to the next school is not automatic and parents need to apply for a place before the 31st October 2014 closing date. The transfer process is the same for all community, voluntary controlled, voluntary aided, academy, foundation, trust, faith, free or studio schools. If parents apply late - even if they live next door to the school - their child is unlikely to get a place. You can apply online at www.leics.gov.uk/admissions. For general enquiries about the admissions process please call the Customer Service Centre on 0116 305 6684. Online applicants will receive an email acknowledging receipt and be able to view the decision on 2nd March 2015.

Newtown Linford Gardening Club All the activities of the garden club are now geared towards the highlight of our season – the visit of garden designer Adam Frost. Our celebrity event each year is becoming very popular as we welcome people who have a prestigious status in the world of horticulture. Adam frost is no exception. As the designer of no fewer than six gardens which have won gold at the Chelsea Flower Show, he ranks among the great designers of the present day. As a result his profile is increasing sharply; he appeared regularly on the TV coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show and has had several TV appearances on other programmes since then. It is not common for celebrities to come to Newtown Linford, so we look forward to the occasion. Some of you will remember the visit of Christine Walkden last October and we expect a similarly interesting evening. There are still some tickets left however and visitors are invited. We know other garden club members will join us for this special event.so if you would like to come, tickets for the evening (£10) can be obtained from the club secretary ,by e-mail, phone or letter. We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. If you are interested in our activities just contact the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk.net) , or come to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you.

POLICEMATTERS

Crime Figures 19th August 2014 to 18th Sept 2014 Burglary Dwelling – 0

Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 19 August and 14 September 2014 inclusive. LASER PENS The beat team has received calls this month regarding the use of ‘Laser pens’ that are being used to cause nuisance and anti-social behaviour around the area. In particular, the pens have been used to shine through residents’ windows, and in the past we have also received reports of the bright light being aimed at drivers / vehicles. The nuisance caused by such behaviour, let alone the obvious dangers it poses to drivers cannot be underestimated. There are also concerns regarding ‘Laser light’ being shone in the direction of aircraft (including the Police Helicopter), however thankfully we have not had any reports of this happening in the village. Those who use the pens to shine at people may think it is an innocent prank but it could lead to serious injury if shone at a person’s eyes or at a vehicle. The Police will seize and destroy any Laser Pens being used to cause anti-social behaviour, and the person using them will be dealt with through our Youth Referral schemes. Alcohol Awareness Week As I write this article, we are due to commence Alcohol Awareness Week (w/c 15/9/14). This aims to raise awareness of alcohol and its effects, whilst educating people about how they can avoid the associated risks by reducing the amount they drink. From a local community policing perspective it does become more concerning to see underage boys and girls drinking alcohol around the village. The beat team keep close checks on local shops licensed to sell alcohol, and we are pleased to note that all are very

stringent in carrying out their requirements under the Challenge 25 – Drink Aware scheme. Clearly, the youths are getting there alcohol from somewhere and if officers encounter youths under 18 drinking whilst on patrols, they will have the alcohol seized and parents will receive a visit to discuss a way forward. For more information on Alcohol Awareness please visit the very informative Drinkaware.co.uk website. Anstey Gala Finally, a huge ‘well done’ to the Anstey Neighbourhood Watch and Police Volunteer teams who staffed the stalls at the recent Anstey Gala. It was a fantastic day by all accounts and as well as drumming up some new members for NHW; it also earned some much needed funds to help keep the excellent Anstey NHW scheme running. Thanks to all! As always, we would ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious person(s) or activity to Police on 101 or, if you feel a crime is taking place, 999. If you have any information at all about crime please call CRIMESTOPPERS. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Just call – 0800 555 111

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. It is this time of the year when many events take place within communities, this year a lot on Saturday 6th September. All these events bring together families to enjoy the many varied activities and displays on offer.

does adversely impact upon parking provision on-street. This needs to be reviewed by the Local Planning Authority as an amenity issue". The response also talks about the potential re-location of the bus stop on Leicester Road, stating "there has been initial resistance to this proposal, however, should planning permission be granted, it is recommended that this is investigated further" Going on to say "it should be noted that any relocation would be subject to the usual consultation procedures and any re-location is not guaranteed".

Once again I must congratulate all the local committees for organising these excellent events, I understand how much time is dedicated to make these events such a success and everything just right on the day. I attended three of them, Anstey Gala, which once again was well supported by local people, it was good to see so many young people enjoying the activities available. I also managed to attend two of the Horticultural and Craft Shows on the day, being a keen gardener it is always a pleasure to see so many excellent exhibits, indeed the standard seems to be very high this year, always makes me wonder where I went wrong! Once again I presented the prizes at the Thurcaston and Cropston 31st Annual Show.

I have indicated all along that I could not support any proposal that reduces car parking spaces in The Nook. I believe retail businesses have enough challenges without having any reduction on car parking also noting the disruption to business whilst the alterations to central roundabout are taking place. I also question the merit about the potential relocation of the Leicester Road bus stop. In my view, this should be resolved before any decisions on granting planning permission are made. I understand this application may be coming forward to a Planning Committee at Charnwood Borough Council during October. Hopefully I will be able to speak against this proposal as, in my view, this will have a detrimental effect on the retail businesses of Anstey and an amenity issue for local residents.

Update, Planning Applications. I have had several meetings about the proposed development on Cropston Road, Anstey. This is for up to 160 dwellings, public open space and various other associated works. The consultation response from the Highway Authority is now available, this responding to the mitigation proposals for The Nook. The scheme proposed has changed from the double mini roundabouts to the latest proposal that involves alterations to the existing parking bays to the east and south of the junction and relocating the central island within The Nook. It is acknowledged this will reduce the car parking capacity within The Nook area, stating "that the proposed mitigation, whilst addressing capacity issues

Highway Update. A few reports ago I gave you details about Traffic Regulation changes in Newtown Linford. This was in response to a petition from a resident to install double yellow lines on Bradgate Road adjacent to the entrance to Bradgate Park. This was also an opportunity to make adjustments to parking in other nearby locations which have been reported as causing issues within the village. Therefore included in the recent consultation were adjustments to parking on Groby Lane, Groby Lane Service Road and Main Street. I await the information from the consultation before moving the process forward. After receiving information about another accident at the Roecliffe crossroads. I have asked for the road markings to be re-painted and the hedge cut back to give a better sight line when coming from Swithland. I have also had conversations with officers at the County Council about looking into a scheme that would try to mitigate the high level of accidents at this crossroads. I am afraid that once again the speed of vehicles travelling

along this road is the main reason for most of the accidents, in spite of the speed restrictions that are in place. Launch of Your Shire Community Grants. The County Council has launched the new Your Shire Community Grants Scheme, which is aimed at providing small grants (up to £2,500) to community groups, local charities, voluntary organisations, parish councils, social enterprises and schools. The grant is available to help these organisations to provide community services which support vulnerable people, promote independence and reduce demand for public services. The County Council has made available £160,000 per annum for the scheme and funding will be available in two rounds with £80.000 of funding per round. The allocation is based on a number of county wide themes: • Encouraging young people to reach their potential: • Getting active in the community: • Supporting older people to live independently: • Supporting vulnerable people in the community: • Eating healthily for less. The closing date for all round one applications is 19th October. For further information on the process visit www.leicestershireforums.org The County Council is keen that this new grant reaches as many community groups and organisations as possible. In the Right Place. The County Council is consulting on the draft school and other educational places strategy for Leicestershire 2014-18. The Council are consulting because they want children and young people to enjoy their learning, make good progress and achieve high standards. To do this the Council needs to ensure that Leicestershire schools offer first class facilities and have sufficient places available. Above all, delivering the Council's key priorities will ensure that we have the right number of

school places in the right locations, at the time they are needed. The consultation runs until Friday 17th October. More information about the proposed strategy is on the webpage www.leics.gov.uk/haveyoursay/schoolplaces Cutting the Amount of Landfill Rubbish. Charnwood Borough Council is continuing the drive to reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill. Some residents still have the over sized 360 litre black wheelie bins which the Council will be swapping for smaller bins. The smaller bins are usually enough for the average family and many residents already have them. People can still request a larger black bin but they will usually only be given on medical reasons and in exceptional circumstances. All cases will be considered on their own merits and any resident who has concerns should contact the council. THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

Monday, 8th September proved to be one of those joyously brilliant sunny days we sometimes get in this month of the year, which helped Members to come along for our 11th Harvest Bring and Buy. The Harvest table was ably filled with assorted vegetables, salads, fruit, apples galore, home-made jams and marmalades, tinned soups and tempting cakes. All the produce was purchased, resulting in a very satisfying sum of £87 Following the Sales Table, a very informative talk was given by Mrs Sue Foreman on her work with the “Phoenix Trading Company” making, demonstrating and selling Cards to all kinds of groups. Sue decided to join this Company to aid fund-raising for the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust. Sue and her family were friends of the Humphries family and she wanted to give her support. Joe Humphries was 14 and was a very fit 6’3” athletic young man, known as the “Gentle Giant”. He died unexpectedly when out jogging around Rothley and only a short

distance away from his home. Several local people went to his aid but to no avail, as Joe had died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, SAD. The Memorial Trust was set up by Joe’s father Steve Humphries, who was previously a Leicester City Goalkeeper, in Memory of his Son to raise awareness and support for other children with this condition. Currently the Trust is working with The East Midlands Ambulance Service to promote life-saving Courses. We were pleased to hear that Sue was able to fundraise £50 from the sale of her cards to our Members. With our customary refreshments, in celebration of Birthdays for Sue Wakerley and Maja Tompkins ,we enjoyed luscious cakes and a large tin of Chocolates. Our next meeting will be on October 13th, when we shall welcome Mrs. Jackie Partner giving a talk on “Bits and Pieces”. This will be very enjoyable. Do come along!

Ann Farndon.

autumn

gardening Welcome to Autumn! In some respects I love the autumn, the chilly mornings and the warm days, the colours of the leaves, but on the other hand it heralds the arrival of winter and damp, dismal November. Now if the time to invest in some fleece to cover up tender half hardy plants and to lift summer flowering bulbs and tubers such as dahlias, gladioli and begonias. In their place plant spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils and tulips etc. Lift summer bedding and replace with winter flowering plants such as wallflowers, primulas, and pansies. Also replant tubs with winter flowering plants and consider underplanting with dwarf daffs and tulips. Prune climbing roses and tie into a frame

to prevent the wind from damaging them. Cut back perennials that have finished flowering and clear the borders of weeds and debris. Consider using a mulch to keep the ground weed free and to provide some insulation for the plants during the winter. Finish harvesting peas and beans. Harvest pumpkins before the first frost. Plant overwintering onions and garlic. Cut back the fruited canes of summer raspberries and tie in next years’ fruiting canes. Clear the straw from around the base of strawberries and give them a good haircut to encour-

age new growth. Use glue bands around the trunks of fruit trees to trap winter moth, earwigs and ants. Apply a winter wash to trunks and branches of fruit trees to kill overwintering pests. If you still have plants in the greenhouse remove the shading to make of the most of the light. Once the greenhouse is clear, disinfect and clean it before moving in any tender species. Remember to check these plants for pest and disease. Set the heater in case of frost. Clear the lawns of any debris and tidy up the edges. Mow if needed and if conditions allow. Aerate and top dress ready for the winter. New turf can also be planted now. Hedges can have their final cut of the year too. Net ponds to prevent leaves from falling into the water and consider encouraging birds into the garden to eat and pests that are about. Then retire to the sofa with a cup of coffee ready for Strictly and Downton!

IN ANSTEY

SPORT

LCFC LEGENDS DAY LOTS OF FUN! The Nomads & Swifts worked hard to ensure everything would be set up right and when the day came around we couldn’t have asked for better. It was beautiful sunny day, and the crowds turned out to enjoy the special sporting occasion together. The day was kicked off with the young Swifts mini-soccer teams showing what they’ve learnt so far, and judging by their abilities already it looks like Anstey’s got some future stars in our ranks. The Leicester Legends game was fun to watch as they beat our Anstey Greats 7-2. The legends were captained by Steve Walsh, with goals from Carl Heggs who scored a hat-trick, former Nomads’ and Leicester player Matt Piper was also on target. Guest players Rendall Monroe and former Leicester Tigers winger Steve Booth were also on the score sheet, with Booth getting two. A spokesman for the Legends thanked all those involved for a truly great day and how well we looked after the Legends players. On behalf of both clubs we would like you express our thanks to all of those that attended for making it a superb day!

Swifts Under 11 girls enjoy the start of the season

The Swifts Under 11 girls of the 2014 season are excited to have begun the season in style with a new kit sponsored by Roy Green Estate Agents. They have trained hard over the summer period to form a completely new team which consists of year 5 and 6 girls from local schools. Some had played last year as a 5-a side development team which gave them the skills to progress to the 7-a-side format, whilst others are new to football. They have played three matches so far and suffered a tough couple of defeats but were delighted to have earned a 3-1 away win in their most recent match against Blaby and Whetstone. At the point of writing this article they are 7th in the league which is a great achievement. We are really excited about their progress and potential with some great talent in the squad. The development of girls football in Anstey is growing in popularity with the Swifts now having teams in both the under 11 and under 12 leagues. Additionally there is an under 7 academy group and a budding under 9 team who are soon to play friendly matches. If your daughter is interested in playing football please feel free to come along to one of our training sessions which are on Saturday mornings at 10am on the Stadon Road Recreation ground. We welcome players of all abilities and aim to progress all to play matches. Alternatively contact Valerie Hayes, Club Secretary 0116 2365322

Nomads NEWS

WATCH FOOTBALL

by Reece Preston-Hayes

It’s been a packed month for all at the Nomads. Our Under 16’s kicked off their Nomads’ life by stringing together a series of wins including 4-2 against Romulus FC, 3-1 against Athletico Rangers and 6-0 against Burton Colts. Our Under 18’s Youth played in the F.A. Youth Cup and were unlucky not to progress into the next round having lost to Matlock Town 2-3. Other cup action hasn’t been successful either with the first team out of the Vase and Reserves knocked out of the Beacon Bitter League Cup by Thurmaston Nirvana Reserves. It’s not all gloomy though as recent performances have shown some promise in all squads and even when results haven’t gone our way, we still have plenty of positives to build on.

Tattoo by Alex - 1st Midlands tattooist with top 4-Star award Alex Chapman, owner of Tattoo by Alex at Feelgood Farm, Groby Road, Anstey, has become the first tattooist in the Midlands to achieve the prestigious 4-Star top quality award under a new Tattooing Registration and Rating system, recently introduced by Charnwood Borough Council. Based on near-clinical standards, the new quality standard is based on the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health scheme, recently adopted across Wales, and increasingly by progressive local authorities in England. "Tattooing is a serious business," says Alex, "People should think very carefully about it - where to go, and their chosen designs obviously. Aftercare is very important too. Look at the tattoo artist's work. Ask for advice and information, and definitely ensure the studio is safe and meets proper registration and quality standards."

We currently sponsor FC Pochin and Aylestone Park. All our staff at Gap aim to become a well known, respected and reliable company throughout Leicestershire with a loyal customer base due to the service we can provide, being the first port of call for all types of plumbing heating, and building works.   

The opening game on the last Saturday in August was away at Victoria park where a squad of 16 traveled to play Aylestone Athletic. New players to the squad were Matt Bishop, Josh Smalley and Andrew Pollock, with Pete Davies returning after a few years rest. A great start to the season resulted in a 38-27 win for Anstey. Buoyed by this success it was off to Burbage for the first September game a week later. This time Anstey struggled getting into a position of being 36-7 down with three quarters of the match played. However a final spurt saw a recovery to finish loosing 36-19 A week later it was a Home game for the first time on a warm sunny afternoon it was time to welcome Leicester Forest and the return of Anstey veterans Reuben Ward and Matt Gilbert. A very tight match with a 0-0 scoreline at halftime. It was still no score with minutes to go when a move from Matt Belcher, saw Aaron Mahoney score under the posts and David Hobbs to convert, giving us a 7-0 win.

New players always welcome, just contact Matt Belcher or Ian Pollock. The Clubhouse is upstairs at the Coach & Horses and the ground is the plating field behind Anstey Martin School on Link Road.

The 2014/15 has started very well for your local rugby team.

20th September and the first league game loomed, away at Sileby. All was good with a 19-0 lead at half time courtesy of trys from Aaron, Rana and Andrew Pollock. Final result was a league win for Anstey 36-10, but at the cost of many injuries.

Anstey RFC score 100 points in their first four games of the new season!

OCTOBER’S NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW END TO ROAD TAX DISCS From October 1st the DVLA will no longer be issuing tax discs to newly taxed vehicles. The Police have now got ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras in their vehicles, so to save money they will no longer be issuing anymore tax discs to display in vehicles.

DARK NIGHTS AHEAD With the nights getting darker earlier now is the time to think about keeping your property safe in the dark. If you are getting home when your house is already in the dark, or going out later, please start thinking about your house security. Think about obtaining a 24 hr timer, or a light which comes on from dusk to dawn. If you get home when its already in darkness, put a light on before you leave. Outside of your property think about installing a security light, especially in the back of your property, to protect your shed/garage from intruders. I have been invited to give a talk on Crime Prevention at the Anstey Wives meeting on Monday 29th September at the Methodist Church, in The Nook starting at 7.30pm. come along and see what security items I have for sale.

ANSTEY GALA Thank you to everyone who visited our stall at the recent Anstey Gala. The Guess the Teddy competition was won by Holly who guessed “Chelsea”. The winning name was drawn by Martin Broomhead, Chairman of Anstey Parish Council. Thank you to Martin for making Holly a very happy little girl. Thanks to the new Coordinators who helped on the stall, and to the two men who helped us put the gazebo up and down.

SMART WATER Can everyone who bought a SmartWater from me at the Gala check to see if they

have a use by date of Sept 13. I purchased these from a different NHW group, who thought that the sell by date didn’t matter. If you have purchased one of these packs, can you please get in touch and I will swop it for one with use by Feb 15 on. There were only the few given to me with the wrong use by date on. I would also like to thank everyone who signed up to join Anstey NHW at the gala. I will try and pop round and give you your welcome packs as soon as possible (if the road you live on is already a member of Anstey NHW), and pass on your details to your coordinator. If not I will be asking, if you are interested in becoming a NHW Coordinator for your road.

I am sorry to say that the coordinator for Falcon Road, Ken Schofield has resigned as your coordinator, so if anyone from Falcon Road would like to take over from Ken, please get in touch with him as soon as possible to enable you all to receive the benefit of being in a NHW scheme. Once the Coordinator resigns then your scheme becomes nil and void and you don’t qualify for any discounts on your house insurance.

Also I would like to say a big thank you to all the members of the Gala Committee, on a job well done, especially to Louise and Mandy for organising it so well.

Once again thanks Ken for all your help in getting this scheme up and running, and I hope you find a good replacement soon.

I hope the gentleman who was taken ill at the end of the Gala is now feeling much better.

NEW SCHEMES Thanks to everyone who attended the welcome meeting the other week. I hope you found it very informative and helpful and have now all received your welcome packs and window stickers. I would like to welcome the residents of Glover Close, Highfield Street, Latimer Court, Latimer Street, Leicester Road and Ned Ludd Close to Anstey NHW. Unfortunately the new coordinators from Choyce Close, and Graves Way were unable to attend the meeting therefore your schemes couldn’t be registered. These roads on the Davidson’s Development, Freer Way, Gretton Drive and Summerfield Drive are still awaiting a coordinator. If you live in one of these roads and would be interested in taking on the role, please get in touch with me. As I have said previously, this role is not time consuming, we just need a representative to pass on information on behalf of the Police and NHW.

Other schemes still needing a coordinator are: • Balladine Road • Broughton Close • Charles Drive • Holgate Close • Netherfield Road Please volunteer if you can, it would be really good to have Anstey 100% NHW. We are in the process of setting up schemes in Charnwood Road, James Street, The Close and Woodgon Road. Please think about being a Coordinator. As I have said previously this is not a time consuming role, we just need a representative on each road to pass on messages, when necessary. This enables the Police to get important notices and messages out to the wide community of Anstey, to help with looking for stolen items, and to pass on reports of anything which looks suspicious or anyone acting suspiciously. If you would like to contact me for any reason, my details are: Phone number 0116 2365745 or email diane@ansteynhw.co.uk

ANSTEY NOMADS SHOWS ITS HEART WITH LIFE-SAVING DEFIBRILLATOR ANSTEY NOMADS and its community has been equipped with a life-saving new defibrillator, with the help of The Football Association (FA) and British Heart Foundation (BHF). In a unique partnership between the BHF and The FA, more than 900 defibrillators have been made available to clubs at Steps 1 to 6 of the National League System and clubs in the Women’s Super League to help save the lives of cardiac arrest casualties (1). ANSTEY NOMADS is the latest club to install a defibrillator, giving players, staff and fans access to the equipment needed to save lives in their community. The club was also given information about Hands-only CPR, which was made famous for the BHF by football legend Vinnie Jones (2). Two-thirds of the cost of the defibrillator was provided to the club by The FA and BHF. The remaining amount being met by the club along with a grant from ANSTEY PARISH COUNCIL. Club Chairman Tony Ford said: “This vital piece of equipment could prove to be difference between life and death and it’s a welcome addition to this club and its community. “The FA and BHF have made it possible for Anstey Nomads to be part of the drive to improve the UK’s poor cardiac arrest survival rates. Along with CPR, a defibrillator is a vital link in the chain of survival and we’re lucky that we now have the skills and equipment at the club to save a life.” Awareness around sudden cardiac arrests was heightened when former England Under-21 star Fabrice Muamba suffered a cardiac arrest in the Tottenham Hotspur versus Bolton Wanderers FA Cup tie on March 17 last year. Muamba’s story is even more remarkable as only around 1 in 5 people normally survive a witnessed, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK. A defibrillator, also known as an Automated External Defibrillator or AED, gives the heart a controlled electrical shock during cardiac arrest. For every minute that passes without CPR of defibrillation, chances of survival decrease by about 10 per cent. Research shows giving CPR and a controlled shock within five minutes of collapse provides the best possible chance of survival if CPR has been carried out as well. The British Heart Foundation has already helped place 11,000 defibrillators in the community since 1996. Since the charity launched Hands-only CPR last year, more than 30 lives have been saved by the technique. Clubs can find information about the application process by visiting www.bhf.org.uk/football

MP WELCOMES NEW SUPPORT FOR CRIME VICTIMS David Tredinnick, Member of Parliament for Bosworth, has welcomed proposals set out by Sir Clive Loader, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicestershire, aimed at improving support to local victims of crime. In July 2012, the Ministry of Justice set out proposals focused on increasing support services to help victims and witnesses cope with the immediate impact of crime and to recover from the harm experienced. As part of the changes, responsibility for commissioning victim-specific support services will now be held locally under Police and Crime Commissioners. In terms of commissioning services for victims and witnesses, Sir Clive Loader’s initiative focuses on the three following areas: • Commissioning an Integrated Victim Service which will track victims of recorded and self-reported crime throughout the criminal justice system. This victim-focused service will provide information, advice,

practical support and access to ‘cope and recover’ services according to crime type and victim vulnerability/need. • Providing funds to protect and provide the provision of a minimum standard of support, regardless of place of residence within Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland • Commissioning a practical support/target hardening service for those assessed as vulnerable and/or at high risk of repeat victimisation. David Tredinnick said, “I welcome the efforts for improved focus on the victims of crime and their specific needs as it is vital that they are given all possible support during their interaction with the criminal justice system. Locally introduced and monitored measures for adopting a more understanding approach to the likely problems and stress experienced by crime victims and witnesses is crucial to ensuring their needs are fully addressed and supported.”

Bradgate U3A By Barbara Bradshaw (Group Co-ordinator)

We are holding a charity coffee morning on October 16th at Jubilee Hall from 10am till 12 noon. All proceeds will be going to Heartlink. We will have a Bric a Brac stall, Irish Bingo, a Quiz and a Raffle, also the Come and Sing choir will be performing. We have had a very busy summer and the weather has been kind to us when outdoor activities have been taking place. We’ve enjoyed visits to the National Trust properties; Quarry bank Mill, Sudbury Hall and Little Morton Hall. In July we also enjoyed a cream tea. Our other trips have included Wistow Maze, (we didn’t lose anyone!) and also Foxton Locks which was a very popular trip. We have had a variety of speakers including Jack the Barn Owl, Chocolate Tasting and Neville Maggs came along who had competed in the BT challenge yacht race a few years ago. The Choir have given some performances at the church. Our activities have included card making and quilting and they continue to be very popular, we also have walking groups, games groups and reading groups, with carpet bowls and croquet keeping a lot of us fit! Next month Christmas card making is on the list. We have 172 members and many of them belong to more than one activity group. New members are always welcome, just come along to our monthly meetings which are held on the 1st Wednesday of the month.

Want to stay ten years fitter than someone else your own age? GET A DOG. Dog owners over the age of 65 have the same fitness levels as someone a decade younger. In fact, some researchers suggest that public health officials should even introduce ‘dog loaning’ schemes, to enable more people tobenefit from having a pet. Not only do dog owners achieve exercise levels the same as those people 10 years younger, dog owners also have significantly lower levels of anxiety and depression. Blood pressure and heart rate are, on average, lower. As a senior lecturer at the School of Geography and Geosciences explained, “Dog ownership may motivate personal activity and enable older people to overcome many potential barriers such as lack of social support, inclement weather and concerns over personal safety.”

FILMREVIEW The Equalizer

Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) is a man of many mysteries. His career as a black ops commando came to an abrupt end when he faked his own death in favour of a quiet life in Boston, but this new, peaceful existence is merely the calm before the storm. When he encounters a troubled young girl in desperate need of help, he instinctively comes out of retirement in order to assist her. McCall quickly finds his taste for retribution awakened, and he is soon embroiled in a dangerous battle with an army of vicious Russian gangsters. Equipped with an array of weapons and skills, McCall is back to doing what he does best – helping the helpless seek justice, and wreaking havoc and vengeance upon the criminal underworld. Can he protect the peace whilst keeping his identity under wraps, or will he find himself face to face with his past?

A Walk Among The Tombstones Whilst working as an NYPD cop, a quiet cup of coffee in a Washington heights bar soon turns to tragedy for Matt Scudder, when two trigger happy robbers walk in and open fire. Scudder springs into action and guns the perpetrators down in the street but a stray bullet claims the life of an innocent bystander, ending his career. To make ends meet, the ex-cop becomes a private investigator and must let his morals slip in order to operate just outside the law and justice system. When a notorious heroin trafficker asks Scudder to find the vicious gang that murdered his wife, he accepts with reluctance, intrigued by the case and unable to resist the money. As Scudder finds himself getting closer to his prey, the heat intensifies and it becomes apparent that the trafficker is part of something far more sinister…
