If you were not already aware at the Borough Planning Committee meeting on Thursday 14th August Conditional Approval was given for the development of the Cropston Road site. [P/13/2340/2] But it is not as clear-cut as you might think, let us try and explain……….. The vote was 5 against, 7 for so it was quite tight, but the fear was that if the Committee ‘Rejected’ or ‘Deferred’ the application the Planning Agents would simply go to appeal. If they won that appeal (which certain members of the Committee thought likely) then they would be given the green light to build without having to modify The Nook. Whereas if they approved the application then no development can take place without an approved plan for The Nook that mitigates the additional traffic generated. The modifications to The Nook roundabout system, however bizarre they maybe, will have to paid for by the developers and not the County Highways Dept. thus you and me The Tax Payer.

The double mini roundabout scheme is only an example and not the preferred option at this stage. It exhibits major flaws that the Highways Department are aware of and will not accept. The apparent preferred option is partial signalisation (no scheme exists). But now that the application has been ‘Approved’ we the public, will not be consulted again it will simply be up to unelected officers of both Highways and Charnwood Borough to be satisfied that satisfactory mitigation will be achieved. Cllr Snartt will simply be kept informed. Building can only be commenced when a scheme to mitigate traffic congestion at The Nook has been agreed and implemented. Currently as far as we are aware no developer has been linked to the Cropston Road field, the owner will simply be able to sell the field to a developer for more money now that ‘Outline Planning’ has been approved albeit with the strings of The Nook attached. We are however not that naïve and understand that a developer could be waiting in the dark murky back streets somewhere waiting. Having to sort The Nook and having High Voltage power lines above the site could well put off the developers. However, on the negative a developer could be rubbing his hands together, but remember they cannot do anything until The Nook is sorted. So in defence of the Planning Committee they were pretty much ‘Damned if they did and Damned if they didn’t’, the planning system is simply broken. We the public do not have a say, the Localism bill that David Cameron talked about is non-existent. Many of the Anstey residents who attended the Planning Meeting walked out in disgust at the end of the vote on this application to the Chorus of “Shame on you letting down Anstey yet again”. They feel devastated and cheated by a system that is in favour of even speculative developers who are building piecemeal developments on all the routes through Anstey. There is some good news, the Bradgate Road development for 19 houses was again ‘Refused’, and so congratulations to Harvey and Helen Nightingale and the’ Support Bradgate’ Group. It is hoped they can get their life back to reality again.

It was a breezy, but dry afternoon on Saturday 16th August 2014, when a group of members and guests gathered at Ratcliffe College for our last outing of the summer. Situated just off the busy A46 road, not far from the village of Ratcliffe on the Wreake, the College and its spacious grounds have a commanding position on the high ground where they are situated, with magnificent views over the surrounding countryside, but are quite sheltered from the noise and bustle of the nearby traffic. Today the College is an independent, coeducational Catholic day and boarding school, with pupils’ ages ranging from 3 to 18 years.

Events which led to the foundation of the College date back to 1828, when Blessed Antonio Rosmini founded a religious order in Sacro Monte Calvario, in northern Italy, which he named the Institute of Charity. His central philosophy for the men of the order, which later included a separate order for women, plus one for associated lay people, was and still is to service God and the needs of the church and the world in whatever way the signs of the time indicate, mindful of the importance of mutual help and support for one another in their pursuit of serving God. The name for this spiritual family became the Rosminians. In England in 1828, after years of persecution of Catholics, Parliament repealed the Penal Laws against Catholics, finally allowing them the freedom once more to live and practise their faith in public. Thus, in 1835 Father Rosmini sent a small group of men to England, led by Fr. Luigi Gentili. They initially went to the college and seminary at Prior Park in Bath, but as the Catholic revival gathered momentum, Fr. Gentili moved to the Midlands to become house Chaplain for Ambrose Phillips de Lisle at Grace Dieu Manor. Despite some continued hostility towards Catholic missionaries, Fr. Gentili was fortunate to gain support and friendship from a local benefactor, from whom he was able to purchase the land on which the present College is sited, to establish a Rosminian seminary in 1845. Then, in 1847, a boarding school for boys was added. The Catholic ethos established by Fr. Gentili over 160 years ago has remained at the forefront of the life of the College since its foundation, with members
of the Rosminian Community living and working within the College grounds at the Rosminian Centre, based in the previously abandoned buildings and area that was Ratcliffe Aerodrome. We were fortunate to have one of the Fathers from the Rosminian Centre, the well-informed Fr. David, as our guide for the afternoon to take us on a tour of the College buildings and grounds. Fr. David had been a pupil at the College, leaving in 1959 and then later returning there as a teacher. He left again to pursue other ministry and teaching roles over many years, before latterly returning again to continue his ministry within the Rosminian Centre and the daily life of the College. Fr. David proved to be a delightfully entertaining guide with many anecdotal stories to tell, and his deep affection for the College was obvious. The school buildings were designed by the Victorian Gothic revivalist, Augustus Welby Pugin, who is also known for his collaborative work in the reconstruction of the Palace of Westminster. The College Square was designed by Charles Francis Hansom. Various alterations and extensions (not all in keeping with Pugin’s designs) have taken place since the College’s foundation, including the 20thC refectory and Byzantine style church and, more recently, the sixth form centre. Our tour concluded at the Rosminian Centre where we heard from Margaret Greiff about the important role of Ratcliffe Aerodrome during WW2. As Fr. David explained, the Centre is a “work in progress”, but it was good to learn that the buildings have been restored to house a large library, to provide facilities for seminars and other meetings, as well as to serve a meaningful spiritual purpose in the Rosminian tradition. Finally, we enjoyed some very welcome tea and cakes.
Jennifer Kennington Tuesday 16th September is the date of the first of our autumn meetings, when Peter Liddle, former Community Archaeologist for Leicestershire will talk about “The Rise and Decline of the Medieval Village”. Time: 7.30pm. Venue: Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church, Thurcaston. All welcome. Visitors: £3.

Thurcaston & Cropston Gardening Club
Annual Show 6th September 2014 The Annual Show of the Thurcaston & Cropston Gardening Club moved from the village hall to the Richard Hill Primary School last year. This proved to be a huge success. Our new home, with its extra space and light and airy atmosphere, attracted a record number of exhibitors. Exhibits were up to their usual high standard and it was most pleasing to see so many people entering for the first time and this was reflected in the winner’s list.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not
just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello again to all. Not the best of months I’m afraid especially for those living around the Cropston Road, Anstey area, who despite much hard work from Anstey Parish Council, your local Councillors, MP Stephen Dorrell, and many 100’s of letters of objection to the building of 65 houses just before the turning to Thurcaston, lost the argument at a Charnwood Planning meeting held recently by 7 votes to 5. It was only for outline planning permission, but never the less a blow for the Save Anstey Campaign. However the fight I am assured goes on. I also see that developers are looking to build up to 50 new homes on land currently in use as arable agricultural use, off Mill Road, Thurcaston. It seems never ending… For all those who had no faith in our England cricket team? What a turnaround after the Lords fiasco, to go on and win the test series 3-1 against what turned out to be a truly poor Indian test side. Not so good are Leicestershire CCC 4 day league side who are still winless in the 4 day game and have been so for the last 2 seasons. Didn’t help having a captain (Ramnaresh Sarwan) who was either injured of away for a good part of the season, still it’s a young side that should get better next season especially if we can find a reliable leader. I’ll hold fire on LCFC but wish them well. Discus Dan does it again. Paralympic Olympic, World, European and now a Commonwealth gold medal to his collection. Dan from Anstey had a 3rd. round throw of 59.21m for a score of 1023 and secure by just 11pts victory over Aled Davies of Wales in the F42/44 discus competition held at Hampden Park, Scotland. The IPC European title at Swansea is next on Dan’s agenda… Labour Gain! At a by-election held recently in Thurmaston, due to the resignation of cabinet member Paul Harley the labour party took the seat off the Tories. Full result: Ralph Raven. Labour 783, Tom Prior UKIP 496. Hanif Asmal Con. 404. Chris
Canham Brit. Democrats 94. And Stephen Denham BNP 58. The turn out was 24% (1843 votes cast.) The council still remains under Conservative control with 31 seats, Labour 16, Liberal Democrats 2, 1 BNP and 2 independent councillors. Willie Thorne. (Snooker loopy!) Anstey’s true snooker legend and patron for Loughborough’s Rainbow hospice is on the lookout for some new recruits for this worthy charity. The hospice relies heavily on volunteers, and have raised over £500,000 in the last 10 years. There are currently 373 volunteers 277 woman and 98 men. For more details email paul.holden@rainbows.co.uk or ring Paul 01509 638059. Or www.rainbows.co.uk./volunteers Fly tipping? We need your support in Charnwood to stop the steady increase which is occurring throughout the borough. Free collection can be done by the borough for certain articles, or you can use private waste carriers. (But make sure they have a licence.) To report any fly -tipping call 01509 634564. Or email: cleaner.greener@charnwood.gov.uk to check if a waste operator is registered with the Environment Agency call 03708 506 506 Anstey digs it! An archaeological dig in Anstey at the end of July 2014 came up with some interesting finds from 30 pits which were dug around the village. Foundations from demolished cottages were found along with animal bones and Roman pottery. The dig was part of the Charnwood Roots project which sets out to explore how people in Charnwood used to live. Details about the finds will be posted on their website: www.charnwoodroots.org or you can follow them on “Twitter.” Tattoo Parlour? Charnwood borough council have become the first in the midlands to introduce hygiene ratings for tattoo businesses, and Anstey’s
“Tattoo by Alex “ business on the corner of Groby Road and Bradgate Road have become one of the first to sign up. The scheme will be similar to the food hygiene scheme with ratings from 1 (needs improving) to 4 (very good) The Anstey Parlour run by 30 year old Alex Chapman who has been running the business for 10 years received a 3 which is good and if he can install a hands free tap before the next inspection he will be upgraded to a 4. For more information or to report a dodgy business call 01509 634636. Or contact by email: env.health@charnwood.gov.uk And Finally Driverless Cars!!! Whatever next, they could be used in trials on Leicester roads in the New Year so a recent article in the Leicester Mercury tells us. Amazing what some people do for a living isn’t it. You can get fined for using your mobile while driving but a car with no driver it seems could be on our streets within the next 10 years… Me? I am at home at the moment but still convalescing so I am contactable at any reasonable hour.
Yours Cllr John J. Sutherington. STOP PRESS> STOP PRESS> STOP PRESS> Dan Greaves does it again. This time winning the European discus F42/F44 title at the IPC games at Swansea, sponsored by Sainsbury’s, with a new European record and a personal best throw of 62.34m. Not to rest on his medals he then went on to win the Grand Prix Final Event at Birmingham on the Bank holiday weekend with another throw of over 60m. (60.01m) This brings Dan’s season to a very satisfactory end, and bodes well for next season. The world record of 63.46m is getting ever closer.

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. Planning Applications Within My Division. Development has dominated my time over the last month, especially within Anstey. I am grateful to all the residents who attended the meeting with our MP Stephen Dorrell. It is, in my view, important that he knows the strength of feeling local residents have about all the piecemeal development that is taking place in the local area. I understand he has already written to Charnwood Borough Council after this meeting, as requested by the Chairman of the meeting. This centred around the weight given to the emerging local plan and housing numbers. Now for the news from the planning committee meeting at Charnwood Borough Council on the 14th August. The development on Bradgate Road was refused, two of the main reasons being that this development related poorly to the existing settlement pattern and the proposals necessitate the provision of a two metre high acoustic fencing on either side of the access, coupled with the removal of greenery and an established dwelling which form an attractive entrance point into the village. This would cause irretrievable visual harm to the character of the village at this point, which would be detrimental to the character of the area. I was disappointed with the outcome with the other application. This was the site for the erection of up to 70 dwellings adjacent to Cropston Road, Anstey. This was permitted with what is called a Grampian condition, which means the developer cannot start building until a satisfactory scheme has been put forward to mitigate the severe congestion within The Nook. The highway officer has stated the double mini-roundabout scheme is not a preferred option, so we await more details coming forward. This may be when more information is know about the next development on the opposite side of Cropston Road as, in my view, this will cause the same issues within the centre of the village. May I take this opportunity to thank residents who took the time to object to both proposals, also the residents who attended the planning committee meeting. It was so good to have your support when we were speaking against
the proposals. I am told I will be kept informed on developments with the highway schemes to overcome the severe congestion in The Nook, I will also keep you updated on progress. There is also an application come forward for 50 dwellings within the village of Thurcaston, there seems to be no end to this piecemeal development coming forward at the present time. I am sure I will be involved with this application too. Launch of a Century of Stories. As Vice Chairman of the County Council I was delighted to launch a Century of Stories, Leicestershire County Council's Heritage Lottery funded project, which will commemorate the centenary of the First World War. The First World War touched the lives of hundreds of millions of people and shaped the world in which we live today. Nearly everyone has some sort of connection with the events of the war. Perhaps there was a member of your family who was caught up in the conflict? Someone who served in the forces or worked in a war industry or on the land? Is there a link to the place where you live or work, or to your school, or place of worship? What was happening in your street, village or town a hundred years ago? The project will be running drop-in sessions and history cafes in all major libraries, the nearest to my area, Coalville Library 5th September and Loughborough Library 30th September from 10.00am until 12 noon. To find out more about the Century of Stories project call on 0116 3055194 or e-mail centuryofstories@leics.gov.uk There is also a website www.centuryofstories.org.uk British Legion Anstey Branch Event. John Dowling has asked me if I would put this information within my report, but firstly I would like to thank John and all the people who contributed to this event. It was excellent and I was so grateful to them all for taking the time and effort to put on this event over the two

John goes on to say: We would like to thank everyone who took part in putting on a very successful two day memorabilia and photographic event to commemorate the fallen of the First World War. Also thank the public who were very supportive which made this event so successful. A very big thank you to Anstey Parish Council for the use of the Jubilee Hall for the whole of the two days. The event also raised much needed funds to keep the Anstey Branch of the British Legion afloat. We managed to raise £793.26p. Thanks to Brian Kibble for his donation and all the local businesses that gave prizes for the tombola. Partnership Funding for Rural Bus Shelters. The County Council has operated a partnership funding programme over recent years and wishes to further improve facilities for bus users as part of the general commitment in making public transport more attractive. It has therefore made a limited budget available for bus shelters for use in partnership funding with Parish Councils. I am pleased to see a newly erected bus shelter adjacent to the entrance to Beaumanor Hall which was delivered in partnership with Woodhouse Parish Council. In the near future one will also be erected on Link Road, Anstey, this in partnership with Anstey Parish Council. I am sure they will both be of great benefit to all bus users in these two locations. Newtown Linford Gardening Club On July 22nd the club held its annual Summer Garden Party with over 80 members and friends gathering at Mountain Ash Gardens on Ulverscroft Lane. A meal of salmon, quiche and salad followed by cheesecakes, gateaux and a cheeseboard was washed down by several jugs full of pimms, elderflower, wine and fruit juice. Plants and books were on sale and the raffle offered over 30 prizes for the lucky winners. This was, undoubtedly our biggest and most successful party yet. September brings a special event. We, in Newtown Linford, have been very impressed with the changes which have taken place in Bradgate Park under the auspices of its new Warden Peter Tyldesley. There has certainly been a buzz around the place over the last year and we are looking forward to hearing Peter talk to us about the park and all the things which go on there. We expect a huge turnout for this event with most of our 80 strong membership coming to hear him. The final highlight of our year is the visit of award-winning gardener Adam Frost on November 4th. His profile is increasing sharply; he appeared regularly on the TV coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show and has had several TV appearances on other programmes since then. It is not common for celebrities to come to Newtown Linford, so we look forward to the occasion. Some of you will remember the visit of Christine Walkden last October and we expect a similarly interesting evening. More than half the tickets have already been issued even though the event is still three months away. Visitors are invited to this event and we know other garden club members will join us for this special event. If you would like to come, tickets for the evening (£10) can be obtained from the club secretary by e-mail, phone or letter. We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. If you are interested in our activities just contact the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk.net) , or come to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you.

Charity searches for new recruits in Leicester
Let’s be cops
The number of people with dementia is due to rise in Leicestershire and Rutland over the next decade. People in and around Leicester are being urged to help Alzheimer’s Society to support people living with dementia. The charity is looking for volunteers for its Side by Side Befriending Service. Volunteers would need to give up to four hours a week to support people in the early stages of dementia. There are already thought to be 12000 people with the condition in Leicestershire and Rutland. By 2021, that number is likely to reach 16000. Suna Tilley from Alzheimer’s Society in Leicestershire and Rutland says: “The Side by Side service provides stimulation for people with dementia, which could be mental or physical. It may be companionship, such as sitting and having a cup of tea or it could be helping and joining them in an activity or hobby. The service is important because it reduces people’s feelings of isolation.“ “Volunteers will be matched with people with dementia who share similar interests. They will gain valuable experience and develop a sense of value by providing a much needed and worthwhile voluntary service.” The Leicestershire and Rutland Locality of Alzheimer’s Society provides ongoing training and support to all volunteers, who will be CRB checked and who should be over the age of 18. Potential recruits are asked to contact Suna Tilley on 0116 231 1113 or email: suna.tilley@alzheimers.org.uk

For two struggling thirty-something mates, life it pretty hum-drum, until they’re invited to a fancy dress party that unexpectedly changes everything. Choosing to dress as the boys in blue for the occasion, the friends find that life as a pretend cop is pretty good. Instantly becoming a hit in their own neighbourhood, these fake cop duo continue to wear their costumes, and brandish their fake badges whenever the opportunity arises. But when real trouble comes knocking, the two get entangled in the real life criminal underworld of dirty detectives and the mob. Can these two wannabe cops become real heroes, or will they regret ever brandishing their fake badges around their neighbourhood?
Million Dollar Arm Life could be better for sports agent JB Bernstein. His career seems to be waning somewhat, and so he decides to travel to India to make his own luck. Teaming up with a rather grouchy retired talent scout Ray Poitevint, the two embark on a hunt to find the next major sports star in the world of competitive cricket. After setting up a national contest called ‘The Million Dollar Arm’, interest goes through the roof, and they hand pick two talented 18 year olds, who each have a sharp eye and a mean throw. Plucked from obscurity, and away from their rural Indian villages, Rinku and Dinesh soon find themselves training in Los Angeles, where life couldn’t be more different. As the two become homesick and struggle to adjust, the increasing pressure heaped upon them begins to take its toll. As JB begins to form close friendships with his new protégé’s, his friend Brenda forces him to question his motives, and the importance of family and friends over career. Based on a true story, this biographical drama has got more than its fair share of comic moments, and is brought to you by Walt Disney Pictures.

POLICEMATTERS
Crime Figures 19th July 2014 to 18th August 2014 Burglary Dwelling – 0
Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 19 July and 18 August 2014 inclusive. Of the recorded crimes, we are particularly concerned about a deliberate ignition fire that destroyed approximately 3 acres of wheat crop in a field off Link Rd. Without the quick response of the member of public who raised the alarm and the excellent work by the County Fire Brigade, this fire could have quickly spread even further and destroyed even more wheat crop. The fire was started at around 3pm on Monday 14th August and the Fire Brigade have confirmed that there were 3 other attempts to start the fire before the fourth attempt took hold. The seat of the fire was along the footpath that runs parallel with Link Rd near to Martin High School. If anybody has any information regarding the fire please call 101 and quote crime no. LC/03229/14-7. If you are walking the fields please be vigilant and report any suspicious persons. “Loud Bangs” We recently received a number of reports throughout the village of loud ‘bangs’ or in some cases ‘gun shots’ heard. These were being reported over a number of weeks and from various locations. Our investigations led us to the source of these ‘bangs’ – and in fact they were ‘Crow Scarers’ or small explosive devices (like a ‘banger firework’). These were industrial strength scarers and far more explosive and powerful than normal fireworks and were being sold in the village to local youths individually by person(s) unknown. We believe that our investigations and activities regarding these Scarers have taken them ‘out of circulation’, but we would request all parents to be aware of these dangerous explosives and ensure that your child does not become involved with them. We have been
informed that they were even being taken into local schools in personal bags, so we will be visiting these schools when they return next week. The explosives are about the size and shape of an ‘AA’ battery with a red sheath and if found should be placed in a bucket of water for 24hrs before being disposed. Anti Social use of Mopeds / Motorcycles Our attention has been drawn to a number of moped / motorcycle riders causing nuisance to members of public by inconsiderately riding on paths, through alleys and on recreational areas. This has now become a priority for the beat team and we will deal with any rider with the full powers available to us. This includes both written warnings and the seizure of the vehicle under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002. We have already seized one moped in the last month for riding across the Stadon Rd recreation ground – take heed of this and do not become the next person to have their vehicle seized and have the expense and inconvenience to get it back!

As always, we would ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious person(s) or activity to Police on 101 or, if you feel a crime is taking place, 999. If you have any information at all about crime please call CRIMESTOPPERS. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Film Presentations
From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council
Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council is engaging with the community to produce a Neighbourhood Plan. This will enable people who live or work in the Parish to shape how the villages will look in the coming years. It will contain policies that will be the basis for planning decisions to be taken by Charnwood Borough Council on issues such as housing, open spaces and the environment, heritage and community facilities. If you love living in Thurcaston and Cropston now – help us to keep it that way in the future! Whether you're interested in preserving the things that are important to you or have ideas for making things better, come and share your thoughts with us!! The Neighbourhood Plan is being driven forward by the Parish Council which has established a Working Group for the purpose. We believe that local people are best placed to make decisions on matters that affect them most and so, later in the year, we would like to form ‘theme groups’ of people living locally with a particular interest in housing, open spaces, heritage or community facilities. Groups will meet with other parishioners to discuss what is important and to help the Parish Council to translate community views into policies. Discussions may include such things as which open spaces to protect from development; what sort of housing is needed (and where) to meet the needs of people living in Thurcaston and Cropston; what community facilities are required that are not currently available and which heritage assets to safeguard for future generations. Please let us know if you would like to be involved in one of these Theme Groups. You can find out more about the Thurcaston and Cropston Neighbourhood Plan by coming to either of the drop-in sessions being held at Cropston Evangelical Free Church, Station Road, Cropston on Friday 19 September any time between 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm, and in Thurcaston at the Memorial Hall, Anstey Lane, Thurcaston on Friday 26 September also between 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm. Please look out for leaflets that are being distributed locally and posters which will give more information about these events – but make a note of the dates in your diary now! Contact the Parish Clerk at the Parish Office at the Memorial Hall on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:30 am – 11:30 am or you can email tncparish@btconnect.com or phone on 0116 2367626. Find us on facebook.com/Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council and follow tncparish on Twitter.
We want to hear from you! The more people become involved the better the Neighbourhood Plan will be. This is your chance to make a difference – USE IT!
In our last film, "12 Years a Slave", Steve McQueen considered the slave trade from the perspective of a freed black man who was kidnapped and suffered sustained abuse on the plantations of Louisiana, before he was reunited with his loving family. It was an incredible true story. “Saving Mr Banks" will be shown on Friday September 11th and lasts 125 minutes. This film was nominated for a BAFTA as best outstanding British film. P.L.Travers (Emma Thompson), wrote a series of books about Mary Poppins but for twenty years she refused to grant filming rights to Walt Disney,(Tom Hanks). The latter eventually gave interesting concessions to the author, making possible the wonderful film "Mary Poppins". "Saving Mr Banks" is an elegant and witty story. "Mandela - Long Walk to Freedom" will be shown on Friday Oct 17th and lasts 139 minutes. Starring Naomie Harris and Idris Elba, this film, which is drawn from the memoirs of the South African statesman, Nelson Mandela. It stretches from his childhood to his almost unbelievable inauguration. It delves into the complex politics as well as difficult relationships within his family. Elba brings out the courageous determination of Mandela and his charismatic personality. This has been the greatest challenge of Elba's acting career. “The Monuments Men" November 14th.
will be shown on Friday
Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £4-50 and concessions are £4. The price includes refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office - 0116 236 7626 or at the door.

Swifts Boys Academy progress to Under 7’s The Anstey Swifts Boys Academy are very proud to have progressed to become the Anstey Swifts Under 7 Storm. Formed in 2012 by coach Andrew Judge (With at the boys at the tender age of 4!!) , the team have gone from strength to strength. Recently the squad of 17 boys have enjoyed successful results from three tournaments. One recently arranged by LCFC led to recognition from the Leicester City youth coaches. Andrew Judge had started the Swifts Academy for the main reason of watching his son play football and has the inspiration from other European countries such as Spain that have the ethos “If they can walk they can play football!” this has shown in the lads ability at their age compared to others. The great support from the local parents and village has a huge input to the enjoyment from Andrew’s perspective, The team also benefits from local Estate and Lettings agent Roy Green Surveyors who have purchased all kits and team jackets. Recently they won a trophy from the Steve Knight memorial day in Anstey partly set up by Andrew’s assistant coach Matthew Wallace who also shares the same pride and passion in watching the lads grow. Andrew has said that the lads will be enjoying many more tournaments and fun days in the coming year. “One day these lads will be wearing England shirts and people will say I remember them playing down the Reccy in Anstey!” said Andrew. Nomads NEWS
by Reece Preston-Hayes
Anstey Nomads started their sixth campaign in the EMCL this season has been long awaited after a rocky season last year. So far it’s been a mixed bag with ups and downs, but there has still been a great sense of optimism in the club, it helps a lot that even when we’re not taking any points we pick up goals and have positives to build on! This seasons squad is a combination of new and old, with players many will recognise from seasons ago, some still playing from last season and of course the new signings who the fans are still learning the names of.

ANSTEY WI Anstey WI held a craft day at which they made bunting for a forthcoming event at Foxton Locks with the centenary baton. Next year marks 100 years of WI in this country, and a baton is making its way from Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantisiliogogoch in Anglesey where the first WI opened, via each county federation, to London for the AGM at the Albert Hall next year. The day proved an enjoyable, sociable way to get the job done, and the picture shows some of the members present with the work in progress. At the regular meeting our speaker was Sarah Shepherd, the volunteer managing director of the Just Shop in Leicester. One of their suppliers called Cards4Africa invited her to Rwanda to see how they work. The business helps survivors of the genocide to learn skills by producing hand-made cards to be sold mainly in Britain and America. Paper is made from old cardboard and the designs are cut out with just scissors and glued in place. After two years the workers move on to make way for others, and many go on to run their own businesses. It was a moving account of enabling those who have suffered tragedy and great hardship to make their lives better. Our competition led to an interesting, eclectic exhibition of artefacts from other countries.

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY
On 11th August Mr Derek Holloway, who had previously visited the Club twice with extremely diverse talks, on this occasion spoke on a personal level about the Earthquake which took place in Christchurch New Zealand, on Tuesday 22nd February 2011, when he and his wife were on holiday with their extended family. He named his talk “The Day the Earth Moved for Jane and Derek” a title which produced much laughter. However, the subject was far from amusing. The Christchurch Earthquake was a powerful natural event which severely damaged New Zealand’s second largest City killing 185 people in one of the nation’s deadliest peacetime disasters. The quake (6.3 magnitude) followed an earlier one (7.1 magnitude) which had occurred on the 4th September 2010. New Zealand is situated on the notorious 40,000km long “Ring of Fire” around the Pacific basin where 90% of all earthquakes occur with 81% being major. New Zealand is therefore known as “the shaky islands” and Christchurch, at the epicentre of the ‘quake, is still experiencing aftershocks today.
collapsed up the Street. The family drove them out of town avoiding collapsed buildings and lakes of mud called liquefaction rising out of fissures above the river Avon, earlier so peaceful but by then a raging torrent. A baby daughter was cared for by the Grandparents, whose house had been shaken several times by earthquakes and after-shocks. Another relative had to abandon his coat, wallet and keys and did not see his car again for four months. Two other cousins were at the University and had to run out on to the grass to avoid falling masonry
Derek graphically recounted his and his wife’s personal and harrowing experiences witnessing first-hand the terrible earthquake which occurred at 12.51pm.
Derek said that in the aftermath 185 people had lost their lives and many families were separated for long periods. Most buildings had been destroyed including Canterbury Cathedral, all churches and 80% of the business district. All infrastructure had gone. Food had to be airlifted in, 10,000 houses were beyond repair, 20,000 Portaloos had to be installed and the famous Rugby Union matches relocated. All in all, the ‘quake proved to be the 3rd costliest ever. The city’s mayor, Robert Parker, fronted media coverage and “held people together” and was knighted for his services in this year’s New Year’s Honours List. On a lighter note, Derek then followed on with happier photographs of his family holiday in New Zealand.
They had spent a pleasant morning punting on the river Avon and were about to enjoy lunch in a Restaurant, when the earthquake struck and they became trapped and they had to escape the falling building. Jane had become trapped in the “Ladies” for a short time. Their cousins helped them to get out and to shelter in the Park as the Cathedral
Derek then reported on the progress made by the time of his return to New Zealand some 3 years later 2013/14 and said that Christchurch was by then ”on the road to recovery”. Canterbury Cathedral had been temporarily rebuilt using cardboard and the original bells returned for repair to Taylors’ Bell Foundry in Loughborough. The city centre
had been totally demolished and the land cleared to await final planning decisions on redevelopment. In the meantime, Christchurch was still a city of shipping containers housing businesses, offices etc., but the famous heritage trams had started to run again, albeit in restricted areas and work had commenced on the first priority “infrastructure” with the re-laying of underground water supply pipes and sewers. Poignantly a temporary memorial of 185 white chairs (including one baby chair) had been installed to represent the people who had lost their lives. Derek said that for him the life threatening experience of surviving the earthquake had been “life changing”. He and Jane had attended a thanksgiving service at which the New Zealand National Anthem had been sung in Maori and English and which he said he had found particularly moving. The brave people of Christchurch have to live with constant worry about “the next one” and he and Jane wished good luck to them all, a sentiment shared by all members of the Monday Club present at the meeting. Members were then able to peruse Derek’s selection of memorabilia (newspapers and photographs etc).bringing closure to a fascinating talk, Our next Meeting will be our customary Harvest Festival on 8th September. This is a light hearted event, supported by generous fund-raising donations. Do come along and join us. Information obtainable on 0116 2363467.

Anstey and Poem, Letters to home Glenfield Cricket Club Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club have enjoyed a season of mixed fortunes so far with the first team flying high in Division 7 West, however, the second team are battling to avoid relegation from Division 8 West. There has also been the reintroduction of the Sunday friendly side towards the end of the season. The weather has been unkind to us on a few occasions this summer, however, the majority of matches have been completed satisfactorily. The 1st team have had an excellent campaign. At the time of writing, they are sitting in 3rd place in Division 7 West, however, if they won all their remaining fixtures then they would be promoted to Division 6. Under captain, Joe Harris, there have been some brilliant individual performances. The batting has been led by Anoop Jayaraj, who has scored over 500 runs for the 2nd season running. Anoop also notched up a fantastic unbeaten century against Loughborough Outwoods 2. The bowlers have made an outstanding contribution with the pace trio of Chemika Mewan, Anil Revu and Kumara Sanira proving more than a handful for the opposition batsmen. In fact, the 1st team’s opponents have been bowled out for less than 100 eight times so far this year, with the 3 bowlers all claiming over 20 wickets each. The 1st team will hope to clinch their promotion in the coming weeks. The 2nd team at the time of writing are struggling to preserve their Division 8 West status. Unfortunately, the team have suffered from a lack of consistent batting displays with only 6 individual scores over 50. As a result, the team have only won 3 matches. This has not been due to a lack of effort however with the team putting together some good fielding performances. Jim Pike and captain, Charlie Wilkes have led the bowling attack well throughout the season, however, as the batsmen have not scored enough runs, it has meant that the 2nd team have generally struggled. The other teams have played well with little reward with a midweek team losing narrowly in the Cliffe Wright Cup Final to Cropston and a Sunday team losing in the 20/20 county cup to City Cricketers. The Sunday team still have a few fixtures to play and will be hoping to complete the rest of the season unbeaten. The facilities at the Gynsill Lane ground are arguably some of the finest in the Leicestershire league with a fantastic new pavilion and a well maintained field, thanks to the tireless efforts of our groundsmen. The ground has an excellent backdrop with the hills of Bradgate Park in the background. The club are in good shape going forward and will hope to continue to gain more players during the winter in readiness for the 2015 season. If you are interested in joining the club, please email our secretary Amanda Wilkes. Amanda’s email address is amandaandcharlie@btinternet.com. Please also visit our website at http://ansteyandglenfield.play-cricket.com for regular updates, results and news throughout the season.
I attended a Memorial Service to mark the centenary of the beginning of the First World War at the Leicester Cathedral. A young student Helen Grigalis from Loughborough High School read her poem during the service. I thought it was very moving, therefore I thought it would be good to share it with you. David Snartt. You're all lined up, row by row, No matter were you friend or foe. I cried and waved as ten by ten, The regiment began to march again, Each month we gathered the uncertain news That some had fallen and some were bruised. My greatest fear was that your name was one, One of the perished, one that was gone. Each day was ferocious, for you we were sure. But for us we didn't know if it was death at our door. Come home! We would pray Come home my dear boy! But this seemed to encourage, encourage to destroy. So now I must come to that fatal end The news I'd been waiting for, the letters that you'd send The pen was not from your hand, nor from your friends. Instead the font was bold, black and pretend. My boy I am sorry, your body was not found. In stead you alone, lifeless on the ground. I'll see you in heaven and remember that smile We'll be reunited as mother and child. Helen Grigalis,
WW1 Exhibition at Anstey 2-3 August Congratulations to the organisers of the WW1 Exhibition at Anstey this weekend! The material on display was extremely interesting and the exhibitors were most helpful in offering a wealth of information. The catering was excellent in both the quality of the refreshments, the prices and the service. Aside from the historical interest, it was also a wonderful opportunity for people to bump into old friends and catch up with all that has been happening over the years. I understand that it has been suggested the exhibition is repeated annually - I very much hope this happens as there are some who missed it this year, not having heard about it in time.

Not On the high street Everybody loves a bargain especially mums and mums to be. For years it has been one of the long term projects on the back burner for local Leicestershire charity ADAPT Prembabies to have a Shop dedicated solely to selling new and nearly new baby equipment and items. They have been very fortunate that with the help of Greenacres in Birstall now have a small (and it is small) unit on a three month trial to see if this is a viable project for them. ADAPT really does appreciate all the help and support from Greenacres and they’ve got some amazing items for sale. ADAPT Prembabies (Reg Charity No 1138777) supports parents and families of premature and poorly babies. There is no disputing the fact that in Leicestershire the babies get the very best clinical care but for the parents it’s sometimes a different story. Coping with the hourly stress and emotional trauma of having a poorly baby is heartbreaking - this is where the ADAPT Family Support Workers step in. Sometimes all they are is a friendly face, or to give a hug when one is needed. Someone to sit down with and help parents understand that whatever is going on or whenever help is needed ADAPT are there for them. When it’s time for babies to go home the support just doesn’t stop, ADAPT runs a number of parents groups called In-B-Tweenies. All the babies started their life in special care, being given oxygen or having feeding tubes so these groups give parents the chance to meet with other parents who have been through the same or similar experiences, again sharing the good days and bad days. ADAPT Prembabies is completely self funding so having this new “Shop” is really helping to raise the much needed money for ADAPT to be able to continue. This is a really huge project for us, and we hope you will all pop by to say hello and pick up a bargain or two!
REFRESHMENTS AVAILABLE

A man goes to the doctor and says: Doctor, wherever I touch, it hurts. What do you mean? The Doctor asks Him: When I touch my shoulder, it really hurts. If I touch my knee OUCH! When I touch my forehead, it really, really hurts. I got to know what’s wrong with you - you’ve broken your finger! Doctor replies.

We need your help with an exciting event that will help raise awareness of different aspects of Hospice care, whilst also providing an opportunity to display the work of local artists. National ‘Hospice Care week’ is being held from October 6th to 12th and is an annual awareness-raising week to help raise the profile of hospice care across the UK. LOROS, the Hospice for Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland is looking to participate by opening certain areas of the Hospice to invited guests and members of the general public on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th October. As an added attraction we are planning on holding an art exhibition as part of this event. We would like to ask if local artists or members of art societies would like to donate any paintings, works of art, prints, photographs or sculptures either on a part or total donation basis. Any donations will be used to help LOROS continue to provide care and services to patients and their families free of charge. The exhibition will also feature art work completed by LOROS patients who attend our Day Therapy Unit. It is hoped that the event will be mutually beneficial as it will help LOROS to raise awareness of the important work that hospices do, and will give local artists an opportunity to raise their profile and share their work through supporting a local charity. The timetable for the exhibition will be as follows: • Submission of paintings/art to the Hospice September 1st - September 15th. • Artwork will be catalogued week commencing September 5th - 29th. • Any art work not used will be available for collection on October 7th & 8th. • Displays will be assembled on October 9th & 10th.

JOBS FOR SEPTEMBER September heralds the beginning of autumn in the garden with shorter days and colder nights, even frosts in some places. There is plenty to do in September though with the borders needing to be tied up ready for the planting of spring flowering bulbs which should all be available by now. Although I count daffodils and tulips amongst my favourite flowers I am always slightly sad when the greenhouses are cleared of summer bedding and are ready for the bulbs. However, hanging baskets and planted tubs should still be flowering well, especially if there are continued to be looked after by dead heading and watering regularly. Herbaceous perennials may be looking a bit sorry for themselves so give them a good tidy up and consider planting some now for next year so that they can become established before the winter. Japanese Anemones and Sedums should be coming into their own now. Keep harvesting crops such as beans, courgettes, tomatoes etc. Often this time of year there is a glut so get pickling and freezing! Pinch out the tops of tomato plants now if you haven’t already done so to concentrate all its efforts into producing fruit not green growth. Cut off the foliage of maincrop potatoes to reduce the risk of fungal diseases affecting both the foliage and the potatoes. It also helps to set the skins of the potatoes ready for winter storage. Once the corn harvest has finished cover your brassicas with netting to keep the pigeons off. Plant overwintering onion sets and garlic. In the fruit garden it is time to pick the top fruit if it is ready. Pot up strawberry runners ready for next season’s new plants. Clear out any dead and decaying matter from greenhouses to limit spread of disease and remember to try and water early in the day so that there is no excess moisture overnight now that the nights are getting colder. Now is the time to establish a new lawn or repair your existing one. Raise the mower blades as growth is now slowing down. It is a good time to aerate the lawn and to apply a top dressing. Consider feeding with an autumn lawn fertiliser which will encourage root formation.
