They would like to thank the main sponsors,   the Trustees of the Edith Murphy Foundation  and the Florence Turner Trust, the numerous  local businesses that placed adverts in the Gala   programme, all of our stallholders, who paid for   their stall spaces, the fairground operators, Tony   O’Reilly Ices and Birstall Village Cricket Club who  donate a pre-agreed sum for their services over the weekend, the Saturday bands who perform for  free and the Sunday bands who help to create the build up to the ‘Proms in the Park’ event in the   evening. This year a particular thank you goes to the Co-op Food Store in Birstall for donating all of the food for the refreshments served  by staff and volunteers of Age UK Ltd in the Day Centre.

The weather managed to stay dry during QUORN COUNTRY   the ‘Proms in the Park’ event and didn’t stop or spoil the picnics that many brought with them, all was HOTEL SEE PAGE 7  concluded with an amazing fantastic firework finale.  

  We receive a lot of negative comments on social media about the £1 entry fee and the fact that the gala is ‘rubbish and a waste of time’ this year we had a request not to have the firework display

Get the kids set for summer

Three members of Birstall Golf Club completed 118 holes in a day to raise money for three leading charities. Ross Bradshaw, Chris Webb and Stuart Marriott set off at 4.30am and kept up a fast pace all day, playing six complete rounds then an extra 10 holes, finishing at dusk just after 9.30pm.

Charnwood Borough Council’s summer activity programme is bursting with activities, including crazy golf, fencing, fishing and climbing to keep children entertained and active until August 22. Whether you’re looking to try something new, enjoy a day out as a family or enjoy a summer of sport there is something for everyone. Councillor David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Each school holiday we work to organise events that will keep children active, but that won’t break the bank. “We have listened to feedback from families who have taken advantage of other programmes and ensured that we are offering the activities that you to see, including football, fishing, gymnastics and athletics.

By the end of the day donations to the three charities – Macmillan Cancer Support; LOROS and Coping With Cancer – totalled over £930, with a number of donations and sponsorship forms still to be tallied.

“Once again we are seeing a very busy sporting calendar across the UK so we are very pleased to help residents to live healthy and active lives, while supporting a future sporting legacy too."

Club captain Mike Atkins praised the team’s efforts: “It is a tremendous achievement. 118 holes is 100 more than most of the rest of us ever manage in a day!” Stuart Marriott, was proud of his achievement of only losing one ball all day and finishing with back to back birdies: “Me feet are feeling alright but the back and shoulders are sore. It has been great fun. Fortunately the weather was never too warm which meant we were comfortable all day”.

Events have been planned across the Borough, including a family fun day at Halstead Park, Mountsorrel, climbing and canoeing in Birstall and Forest School at Shepshed High School.

Canasta

Canasta is played with two packs of cards. Each player tries to collect as many Canastas as possible. A Canasta is a group of 7 cards all the same number, with or without jokers/ wild cards and is built from a starting group of 3 cards. The game can be played in teams or as individuals. It is not a childs game!

Wild Card holders can also enjoy great discounts on all activities. If you are aged 516, or have a disability and live or go to school in Charnwood, get your hands on a Wild Card.

We are a small non organisational group of like minded friends who enjoy a social time playing Canasta, We meet at a members house each Monday, 2.0pm – 4.30pm. There are no fees involved.

This just goes to show you how much it was loved and how vitally it’s needed for the Birstall Community. Kingsgate Post Office There has been an array of publicity in the Leicester Mercury, Birstall Post and now Your Local about re-opening Kingsgate Post Office. The campaign got mass support throughout the village; in just a few weeks over 500 residents have signed the petition to re-

I am hoping that with this number of signatures, the support the campaign has had, the Post office will now seriously consider re-opening the Post Office. To support the campaign simply go the shop and sign the petition or it’s available online at change.org, just search Kingsgate.

The Parish on a number of occasions have declined to provide grit bins as they reported they are in stalemate/negotiations with County on who should provide them, but surely they should be thinking about the community rather than a stalemate on who can provide them. At the last meeting of the Parish 17th June I provided the names and address of 21 residents who have stated that they would like one in the area. At the Parish Meeting I asked for a written explanation to all the 21 residents why they can’t have a grit bin in their area. I also asked for a copy of the written explanation. Later that week I received a call from one of the 21 residents stating they had received a letter from the Parish Council inviting them to a meeting Monday 23/06/2014. I was not informed of this meeting or invited and coincidently fell on the night I had full council at Charnwood Borough Council. Im sure it is not usual practice for the Parish Council to give less than a weeks’ notice to residents to attend a meeting? However residents turned up, and requested grit bins. One of the residents explained to me, that the Parish stated they had not received a request for grit bins.

Dog Park A local resident contacted me about having a dog park in Birstall. There have been reports of dog attacks in Birstall and currently there is a bylaw stating that all dogs have to be kept on a lead. I presented this information to Birstall Parish Council who is considering the request in an upcoming meeting; Please contact Birstall Parish Council for further information 0116 2676191. Personally, I think that a dog park is a great idea; it will give the chance for dog owners to let their dogs run free and let the community enjoy the public spaces, everyone wins. Grit Bins For months now I have been trying to get residents Grit Bins in Birstall area. As a borough Councillor for Birstall I approached Birstall Parish Council as requested by residents as this is the role of a Cllr to represent the community.

The Parish explained that they were awaiting a response from Leicestershire & Rutland Association of Local Councils if they could provide grit bin as this used to be the role of the County Council. It should be noted that Leicestershire & Rutland Association of Local Councils sent an email stating they can provide grit bins but do not have a legal duty. It was also established that other Parish Councils in the Charnwood Area have provided Grit Bins and a contact from Leicestershire County Council explained that all previous application for grit bins have come from other Parish Councils so why not Birstall? The form needed by Leicestershire County Council for a Grit Bin is very clear and easy to complete, anyone in the community can complete one and send it to the Parish Council who should forward it to the County Council.

If accurate – as I was not there, this was quite a shocking quote as; I raised the issues on a number of occasions for local residents at almost every meeting since my election. Residents came to the Parish Council meeting regarding the grit bins and stormed out; it has been reported in my newsletter, been publicised on Spotted Birstall, printed in the Birstall Post and discussed at length at the Parish Council. What must it take to get a few grit bins in Birstall for the winters to come! Swimming Pool/Leisure Centre Petition A few months ago I started a campaign to either reopen Birstall Swimming Pool or Build a Leisure Centre. I can proudly report that 700 local residents have now signed the petition. This just goes to show people power. I will be presenting the petition to Charnwood Borough Council very soon. Commemorating Our Past In 1914, one hundred years ago, the population of Birstall and Wanlip was only around 700.. The “Great War” of 1914 – 1918 was regarded, by our grandparents and great- grandparents as a war to end all wars, and many local men joined the forces. Sadly, we know now that their hopes were not fulfilled, since we had a second world war only 25 years later. The slaughter in both wars was horrendous but almost all families in the UK had relatives who died or were injured in battle during the first world war. 21 of those local men did not return – their names are recorded on war memorials at the two villages. If your family lived in this area and you have the surname Adnitt, Bayliss, Davenport, Dawson, Endall, Fielding Johnson, Gladding, Greasley, Henson, Liquorish, Pritchett, Reed, Reynolds, Smith, Toon, Walton, Gascoigne, Goodey or Oxbury you may be a descendant of these soldiers. If you are one of those people, or if you also had relatives who were killed in the first world war, you are invited to a very special service on the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of war: Monday 4th August at 7.30pm at St. James, Church, Birstall. It will be a quiet service of reflection, remembering the sacrifice those men made to serve their country, and the tragedy and heartbreak of all families affected by the war. Birstall St. James Church Garden Fete Monday 25th August - 2pm – 4pm on the Church Lawn, Church Hill (if wet, in the church) The annual Church garden fete will be raising funds this year for the church and for the local charity “City of Sanctuary”, which is based at Leicester Cathedral and supports refugees and destitute asylum seekers. As always, the organisers will be hoping for good weather, but the event has never yet been cancelled by rain, as the stall-holders move inside the church! There will be all the fun of the traditional garden party with games, raffle, tombola, stalls for cakes, plants, toys, bric-a-brac, cards etc. plus teas and light refreshments. Almost there for Heritage Centre’s £56,000 funding appeal The public has taken to heart the proposal to build a heritage centre for the villages of Mountsorrel and Rothley. The Mountsorrel and Rothley Community Heritage Centre will be situated next to the recently restored Mountsorrel Railway, which itself functions as a heritage corridor between the Loughborough-based Great Central Railway and Stonehurst Family Farm and Motor Museum. In February, Lafarge-Tarmac’s Landfill Communities Fund awarded a £540,000 grant to fund the project, but the terms of the grant required that a further £56,000 be raised as matched funding.

Donations have come in from not only local people, but from all over the country and abroad. After only four months £50,000 has been raised leaving only £6,000 still to be raised to release the grant. However, time is running out as the terms of grant mean that the heritage centre has to be complete by July 16th 2015, which in turn means that the remaining match funding must, realistically, be raised by the end of July this year as work cannot start until the match funding is in place! Project leader Steve Cramp commented “The response from the public has been superb. We are now within sight of the target we need to achieve in order to get work started. But it's essential that we succeed sooner rather than later. We have two old granite buildings to dismantle and reconstruct, stone by stone, as part of the heritage centre, within a year. This will be a tough ask but we are confident of success if we can start early enough.” To help raise this figure a “sponsor a brick" appeal was launched where the public can sponsor the bricks that will be used to combine, into one unified building, the different structures that will form the core of the Heritage Centre. Official Opening of the First of Four Defibrillator’s for Birstall The first of four defibrillators has been installed on School Lane Playing Fields Car Park in Birstall. It was officially opened during the Gala, by the Mayor of Charnwood, Councillor Paul Day, with the Mayoress, Mrs Pauline Day and the Chair of Birstall Parish Council, Councillor Ann Marshall in attendance. The other two defibrillators will be sited as soon as possible, there will be one on Wanlip Lane and the other in the Kingsgate area, the exact sites are yet to be agreed and confirmed. There will be a fourth defibrillator installed in the Hallam Fields area, this will be built in and attached to the new Community Hall that the Parish Council are working on at the moment.

Training sessions are being arranged by the Parish Council and will be delivered by the Community Heartbeat organisation. A date is yet to be set but we  will be inviting as many relevant organisations that we can think of to send delegates along for this free training session. Dog Parks on the Playing Fields in Birstall a different story in Birstall where there are numerous places that people can take their dogs and exercise them off the lead.

A request has been made by a resident of Birstall for the Parish Council to create dog park areas on the playing fields in Birstall. This would involve setting an area aside to allow dogs to be exercised off the lead. This has caused a mixed reaction amongst Councillors, because they have a duty to consider all likely users of the playing fields and not just dog walkers, and so they resolved to put this information out for the public to comment on before making any decisions.

The above mentioned playing fields are owned by the Parish Council making them private land, they are not public parks/spaces. They are used and enjoyed by families, young people, the youth café, footballers, cricketers, rounder’s players and many more. To have an area set aside for this type of activity, it could be said, would not only spoil the look of the playing fields, but it could become a nuisance to neighbours and users of the rest of the playing fields because of the potential smell during the hot summer months, and if an appropriate site is not correctly identified, it could become a nuisance to neighbours, not only with the smell, but the noise if there are a large number allowed in all at the same time, the question asked was, who would monitor this?

Currently, there are byelaws in place that the Parish Council can enforce to ensure that all dogs entering the playing fields are kept on leads at all times and this applies to all of the playing fields that the Parish Council own, and they are: Harrowgate Drive Playing Fields, School Lane Playing Fields and Meadow Lane Playing Fields.

If this scheme was to go ahead, the area would have to be made secure by fencing the area off to keep the dogs in and there would have to be a change to the existing Byelaws, both of which would incur costs and  legal fees to make the appropriate changes with the Home Secretary, and this would  ultimately be at the expense of the Council Tax payers of Birstall.

Family event to remember Charnwood’s WWI heroes

A MAJOR family event is being held in Loughborough to mark the centenary of World War I and to remember the 478 local heroes  who died for their country.  Charnwood Borough Council has organised the “We Remember”  event in Queen’s Park between 3pm-6pm on August 9, 2014, to commemorate the start of the Great War which raged from 19141918. The park will be packed full of interactive exhibitions, actors in uniform telling real-life stories of fallen soldiers, family activities, a vintage tea party, live music and performances. Mel Gould, who manages the Loughborough Carillon Tower and War Memorial Museum, said: "By the end of the First World War nearly every family in the land had been, is some way, affected.

Fathers, sons, brothers and uncles, killed or damaged both physically and mentally. "They made that sacrifice in the belief that they were opposing tyranny and however some historians view the events of WWI we, their successors, have a sacred duty to honour their memory." Councillor Stephen Hampson, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said: “Nearly 500 local heroes were killed in the conflict and it is important that we never forget their sacrifice. “Our We Remember event is just the start of our commemorations in Charnwood over the next four years and we hope people will find it educational, interesting and interactive.” Details for the event are still being finalised which the Council will release soon.

Wildflower grants available for green spaces Community groups and landowners are being invited to take advantage of a summer grants scheme to encourage people to create wildflower meadows. Each applicant can apply for up to £250 worth of seeds, bulbs and plugs to use in parks, open spaces and countryside areas under the Plugs for Bugs scheme. Andy Jackson, Project Manager at the county council based Stepping Stones project which is offering the funding, said: “Wildflowers can really brighten up your local community and improve the quality of green spaces for people and wildlife. “Wildflowers and long grasses are important as they provide much needed habitats for insects and butterflies. “Community groups and farmers as well as parish and town councils in the Stepping Stones project area can apply to the scheme. Summer Concerts at De Montfort Hall a huge success “Enchanting, captivating and thoroughly enjoyable” Over 3,000 children and young people and 90 schools from across the city and the county wowed crowds at Leicester-Shire Schools Music Service’s (LSMS) Summer Festivals at De Montfort Hall. Across three days and nights, young musicians and singers took to the stage to perform a dazzling variety of well-known and original songs and musical numbers in a diverse range of styles using an amazing variety of instruments. Brass ensembles, choirs, ukulele ensembles, steel pans groups, string ensembles, and even a Taiko Japanese drumming group, demonstrated their skills and talents, entertaining a packed hall of parents, grandparents, family members, friends, and teachers, and generated some brilliant feedback: • “Such talent from such young children” • “Amazing and spectacular” • “Great evening” • “Fab, epic, awesome” • “Superb and very well organised” • “Crystal clear and powerful” • “Best one yet!” • “Diverse, enjoyable, what a fantastic showcase of talent” • “Absolutely brilliant” • “A wonderfully entertaining evening” • “Inspirational, enjoyable, entertaining” • “Outstanding!! Amazing opportunity for children of all abilities.” In the same week that the current kings of the Leicester music scene, Kasabian, played a triumphant home-coming gig at Victoria Park, right next door at De Montfort Hall, Leicester’s future musical talent were strutting their stuff thanks to changes made in music education policy to ensure every child has an opportunity to take up an instrument or sing. Working in partnership with schools and music hub partners, LSMS have extended its Summer Festival programme to now include three matinee performances and three evening performances, involving children and young people of all ages to perform to packed crowds at this famous Leicester venue.

Watermead Challenge Charity Run 

The Rotary Club of the Wreake Valley organised the fifth annual Watermead Challenge Charity Run at Watermead Park in early July. Although  the date clashed with one of the football World Cup semi finals there were a record 275 plus entrants in the three and five mile runs. The event, this year in aid of the local Syston charity, Textellis.com, set up by Richard Page in aid of his son Ellis, attracted runners of all abilities  around what is an attractive lakeside course. Race Director, Chris Battye, said: "We are delighted with the turnout and the overall success of the event. Money is still coming in but we hope the evening will have raised over £2000 for this worthwhile cause."
