Kirby Muxloe Parish Council YOUR VILLAGE NEEDS YOU!
Elections for the Parish Council will take place on May 7th 2015. Apart from an election for one vacancy in 2014, Kirby Muxloe has not had an elected Council for in excess of 26 years. Not enough people have put themselves forward for an election to take place, and hence those who did apply were unopposed and therefore automatically became councillors. We are now asking residents to give serious consideration to putting themselves forward for election in May. If only 14 or less people apply, these will automatically become councillors without recourse to an election. As councillors, we firmly believe that the village will be best served by the democratic process of having elected councillors rather than appointed or co-opted members. This can only happen if sufficient residents put themselves forward for election. So what qualities are needed in a councillor and what does being a councillor involve? If you are interested, the following website will give you full information: http://www.cpalc.org.uk/becoming-a-parish-councillor. In brief, the Council needs a range of skills in order to undertake its functions effectively. An interest in and some experience of finance, personnel, estate management and legal matters are likely to be particularly helpful, but perhaps most importantly it requires people who have a genuine and enthusiastic interest in promoting the interests and development of Kirby Muxloe as a community in which people are proud to live. You would be required to give a time commitment to attending meetings and committee membership, and to being fully prepared to participate actively in those meetings by undertaking the necessary reading and training. By nature of the commitment, councillors tend to be drawn from retired members of the community, but it would be good to have some younger members who have an active stake in improving amenities. Note that Parish Councils are not party political in nature. The common factor is in promoting the interests of Kirby Muxloe as being a good place to live. In next month's edition of The Local, we will explain how to apply and the processes involved, but in the meantime we would urge you to give serious consideration to standing for election. More news from Kirby Muxloe Parish Council continued on page 3

Kirby Muxloe Village welcomes the first of three Community Defibrillators Over the last 2 years there have been some fantastic fundraising efforts led by the Kirby Community Fun Day Committee and village residents, supplemented by grant awards, which have led to the purchase of 3 Community Defibrillators (AEDs – Automatic External Defibrillators) and the weatherproof cabinets. The first of these has now been installed outside the Leicester Forest East Physiotherapy Clinic and Cherry Tree Gifts on Maytree Drive, the second is due to be installed soon outside Onestop on Main Street and the third (currently on order) is for outside the Kirby Muxloe Village Hall and council offices. These defibrillators will enable a quicker response in a medical emergency, increasing the chance of survival in the event of a cardiac arrest. Anyone can use the unit as clear automatic voice instructions guide you through the process of using it safely. The iPAD (intelligent public automatic defibrillator) units we have in the village have both a child and adult mode selected by a switch and the pads for the chest fit both.
To gain access to the locked cabinet you will need to place an emergency 999 call and the ambulance operator will give you the code. The defibrillator can then be taken to the emergency situation. The defibrillator works by checking the heart’s rhythm once the pads are placed on the chest, proceeding to a “shock” will only be recommended in certain circumstances. The most important thing to remember is that you can do no harm and having a go will increase the person's chance of survival.
Anne Jolly, Founders of SADS UK (Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome) Village with says: ‘SADS UK is pleased to support Kirby Muxloe putting a public access defibrillator in place. Early CPR and defibrillation are crucial. The defibrillator is automated and in an emergency can be used by anyone responding to a cardiac arrest. Using CPR alone provides increases the chance a 5% chance of survival but early use of the defibrillator of survival to over 50%.’ the purchase of a defibrillator through the “Heart The British Heart Foundation has also supported the village with a grant towards and training Safe” scheme. A group with of the 2 of village residents have volunteered go’ knowledge those who wish to attend oneincreasing an toopportunity share theirtoexpertise aand hour training sessions, the purpose of which is to provide ‘have with a training model defibrillator, thereby knowledge and boosting confidence in dealing with an emergency situation. Although recommended, you do not need to attend a training session to be able to use the defibrillator in an emergency situation. The defibrillators are automatic and will give to be used. clear instructions on how they are

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ratby, Kirby Muxloe & Leicester Forest East areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction
that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Kirby Muxloe Parish Council Continued report from front page. To other matters. As most residents will know, the County Council has decided, in view of its financial constraints, to discontinue its support of many local libraries, the Kirby Muxloe Library being one of these. The Parish Council is considering how it might take over some of those functions to develop the facility as a community hub for the village. Unfortunately, there are legal difficulties as the Library stands on Trust land, and these must be resolved before we can move forward. Assuming that they can be resolved, we would like then to consult with residents on how to make best use of the current Library and to extend its range to meet community needs. You might like to think about this and let us have your ideas. We will also need volunteers. Currently 10 people have expressed an interest, but we would need some 35-40. If you are interested, please approach any councillor to discuss this further. The Council has expended much time recently in setting the budget for 2015/16. As regular readers will know, we have incurred hefty legal expenses in sorting out all that went wrong in the past, together with substantial audit fees in dealing with objections to the accounts lodged by a very small number of parishioners. As a result, the Council's reserves have been significantly depleted, and its activities curtailed - hence, for example, the lack of Christmas lights in December 2014. The Precept (the Parish Council's share of the Council Tax) has remained fixed for the last two financial years, with increases of 43.66% in 2009 and 17.65% in 2012 and as a consequence, and in the expectation that legal and audit challenges will continue, a very prudent budget has been set for 2015/16. Even so, it has been necessary to set the Precept at £158,587 for the forthcoming year, amounting to an increase per elector of approximately 22p per week. Regrettable as this is, it should ensure that we can make good progress in the forthcoming year and continue on the path towards financial stability - including the restoration of Christmas lights in 2015! The Council's Annual Meeting of Parishioners will be held on Tuesday 21st April 2015 at 6.30 p.m. in the Village Hall and we would urge parishioners to attend so that they can hear for themselves a report on last year's activities and presentations from various village organisations.
Spring Update from your local Cancer Research Support Group. A bit of history.... The support group was founded in 1979 when two friends met for a coffee and decided to form a local committee to raise funds for cancer r esearch. Since that small beginning the group has raised over £137,800. This year so far over £6,800 has been collected to support their work. 40 years ago 1 in 4 survived cancer, now the figure is 2 in 4 they are aiming for 3 in 4 in the next 20 years. Our Autumn Fayre was a great success the latest event was on World Cancer Day in February when we took our buckets to Beaumont Leys Shopping Centre and collected over £200 in 2 hours. Our next event is a new one, in April we are having a Quiz night, we would love to see as many people there as possible supporting this great cause.

Budget 2015. The ruling administration has set this year's budget with a 0% increase for the oncoming financial year. Whilst there could have been a slight increase under the 2% cap which would have netted approx £800,000 to be spent on the capital programme, none of that funding would have come to Ratby and therefore, we felt it was better for local residents to get something out of it. Residents will, however, notice that their Council Tax overall has increased slightly. This is due to an increase by Leicestershire County Council, Leicestershire Fire Authority and the Police Authority agreeing a 1.99% increase. Also some Parish Council precepts have increased by an average of 2.98 %. Band rates are now as follows:Band B £1,152.60 Band C £1,317.26 Band D £1,481.91

Wheelie Bin Charges. The Lib/ Dem Administration are introducing new charges for wheelie bins from April 2015. New occupiers will have to pay £65.00 for the three wheelie bins if none are left by the
previous resident. Residents will also have to pay £35.00 if they damage their wheelie bin. Bins damaged by wear and tear or by refuse vehicles will be replaced free of charge.
Anti - Social Behaviour. Following an increase in ASB in the village which includes egg throwing at windows and throwing of dog faeces at properties in the village, we have emailed the Police Commander asking for extra resources and Ozzy has also arranged for the Impact Team to work within the village. At our request Council Officers and the police have organized a patch walk on Wednesday 4th March to visit targeted streets. ASB Officers, along with Borough Councillors and the Police will be talking to residents in an attempt to identify individuals who are causing these problems. All residents have the right to a quiet and peaceful life and ASB is a criminal offence. If you are or have been a victim of ASB then please contact the Police on 101 or you can contact Chris or Ozzy or the ASB Team at HBBC. All enquiries will be in the strictest of confidence. It has been an absolute privilege and a pleasure working for our residents as your Borough Councillors over the past 12 years in the case of Chris and 8 years in the case of Ozzy. We are both looking forward to the future in the hope that we will be able to continue working for you. Once again, we would like to take this opportunity to thank residents for their continued support and remind you we are only an email or phone call away. Regards
Chris & Ozzy. Working for you.

Kirby Muxloe Local History Group
LFE Film Evenings
The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group meets generally 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to all our meetings, which generally take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm.
On Thursday 2nd April 2015 LFE film evening will feature “What we did on Our Holiday”.
This is a recent British comedy which is hilarious and emotional in equal measures. Doug and Abi are taking their three children on a trip to Scotland for a big family gathering in the midst of a difficult divorce. They have asked the kids to keep this a secret from their extended family.
Details of the dates of future meetings, together with the topics that will be covered, are shown on the notice board in Kirby Muxloe library as well as on the Group’s web site: www.leicestershirevillages.com/kmlhg. Summaries of past meetings are also shown on the web site. On January 15th a full Church Hall listened to the eagerly awaited presentation from Professor Richard Buckley, entitled ‘Richard III – The King Under the Car Park’.
The speaker gave a very detailed insight to the project itself, and the various parties involved. He also spoke about the King’s arrival in Leicester, the events leading up to the battle itself, as well as the events surrounding his death and subsequent burial. The next meeting of the Group will be on Thursday 19th March, when David Bell will be talking about ‘Leicestershire Ghosts and Legends’. The Group are always looking for photographs of people who have lived/worked in the village and events that have taken place in Kirby Muxloe.

Ratby Primary Schoo
Performance Poetry On Wednesday 11th February 2015, the whole of Ratby Primary School took part in their 2nd annual Performance Poetry competition. The competition involved every class performing a poem together to their Key Stage and the all important Judges. Miss Aitken and the Governors had the tough decision to award trophies to the best class performance in Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
Each class, from Reception to Year 6, had to learn and perform a poem as a whole class and be as creative and interesting in the way they perform it.
It was a great opportunity for the children to work as a team and use different skills not always seen in the classroom. The children performed to the rest of their Key Stages and the judges, Miss Aitken, a criteria to consider during each Mrs Merry and Mrs Harwood. The judges were provided with performance, these were: Clear voices: Good annunciation, variation in volume and pace. Good use of expression and intonation. Originality: Use of props, choreography etc. Presentation:– confidence, addressing the audience ‘Togetherness’ – speak in unison Entertainment
winner. However The performances were incredible and it was difficult to choose one the judges thought long and hard about each aspect and awarded two classes with trophies.
Well done to Galaxy class for winning this term’s trophy for Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage. Miss Mulhern's The Key Stage 2 winners, Mrs Oakes' class Galaxy performed ‘Hands' By Julia Donaldson. class Pluto won the trophy for their version of Ning Nang Nong By Spike Milligan. Both classes are now the proud owners of the Performance Poetry trophies this term. Well done to all of the children for their hard work and fantastic performances. You can see all of the performances by going to our website in our ‘latest news’. By Mrs Savage The Dogs’ Trust Visits Ratby Primary over The Dogs’ trust visited the children children 300 of Ratby Primary School earlier this term, to teach how to be safe around dogs, how to care for them and keep them healthy. taught Sarah Saunders, the newly appointed Education and Community Officer for the East Midlands, the children how to deal with unfamiliar dogs out in public and how to recognise when a dog is angry were shocked or scared so they can avoid getting bitten. The children to learn that over 85,000 unable to meet owners each year, many of dogs are abandoned by UK the whom feel needs of their pets. After exploring how children to care for a dog’s physical and emotional needs, the learned how micro chipping is helping stray dogs with their owners. Sarah explained that to reunite up micro chipping does not harm a dog and, although it can cost to £40 to have a dog micro chipped at the vets, the Dogs’ Trust is offering it for free! (find out more at www.chipmydog.org.uk). Following two assemblies and speaking to 13 classes, Sarah delivered a workshop to the year 3 children, during which they learned and practiced how to about the health risks of dog faeces ‘scoop the poop’ safely using a plastic bag! “It is very important to scoop the poop from dogs because if you tread in it and end up getting it on your hands YOU COULD GO BLIND!” Emily reports. other The children also learned about importance of twice daily walks to keep their pets fit and how socialising with owners helps to the dog at least two keep them happy. “All dogs need exercise and they just love running – they would run around all day if they could! A dog needs walks each day, even when it’s raining or their owner is busy” writes Laura. about The children thoroughly enjoyed their morning with Sarah and learned a great deal how to be a responsible dog owner – Many thanks to the Dogs’ Trust for offering this free experience and to Mrs Oliver at Ratby Primary for organising the visit. t: 0800 6446 150 • e: yourlocal@openboxpromotions.co.uk • w: www.openboxpromotions.co.uk 12
ol News.... Mercury and Venus turn Scientists During the end of last term after studying the lifecycle of plants and animals, both Mercury and Venus classes undertook a science experiment to see if an adult plant can produce a young plant using various different parts such as the leaves, stem and roots.
Whats On At Ratby Sports Club Saturday 21st March 2015 Duran2. The country’s leading tribute act to Duran Duran. Tickets £5 per person available from Paula on 07739 010108. Open to non-members, all welcome.
Carefully and after much discussion, the children decided which parts of the plants they could use to make the experiment viable and then considered what they would need to do to ensure that their investigations were fair.
We are now collecting in the results from our study and comparing this with our predictions. All of the children in both classes would like to thank ‘Woodlands Garden Centre’ for their donation of plants, compost, bulbs and pots. It was a brilliant afternoon!
KS1 trip to Newark House Museum
During the first half of the new spring term, all of KS1 went on a trip to Newark House Museum in the city centre. Their topic for that half term had been ‘Toys’ and the museum had a small section of old and new toys for the children to look at and compare.
Friday 4th April 2015 Dance and social night with the group The Hint of Mint
As you can imagine, the children were very excited and enthusiastic throughout! They enjoyed looking at and playing with different toys, discovering how toys have changed over the years.
Free entry, open to non-members, all welcome.
As well as toys, the children also found that learning about life during the war very interesting. They even got to experience life in the trenches and climb inside a replica bomb shelter! Some of us enjoyed this experience much more than others! But there was one particular exhibition which caprtured the minds of all the children…Leicester’s famous Daniel Lambert. The children were amazed at how enormous his chair, socks and clothes were. The lovely museum worker even brought out a pair of his trousers for the children to try on… they could fit at least four members of the class inside them! The whole of KS1 really enjoyed this trip and would definitely recommend Newark House museum to those who have not been before!

Updated plans for the library building Since we reported last we have heard that our registration of interest scored amongst the highest of the 30 submissions by various library groups. Scores ranged from 4 – 13 and we scored 12. That augers well for the next stage, the submission of our business plan, though this requires much more work, detail and evidence for our proposals to convince County Hall that our plans to transform the library space into a community hub are robust in terms of management, operations and financing. We have to submit by 13th March. Our use of the space We have very ambitious plans for the increased use of the space, which we hope will be actively supported by the whole village. Our questionnaire, distributed in January, asked for your views on the ideas we had and gave all residents the opportunity of suggesting others. A big ‘Thank You’ to all those who took the opportunity of doing so. We shall need to make a significant investment into this space and all of this may not happen overnight but we will be signing a minimum 10-year lease and have already
spoken to a number of grant funders, who have shown interest in our plans to bring people of all ages, backgrounds etc together in this space. We plan to divide the space, as below … excuse the quality of this picture of a pastedup A2 layout. We have 80 linear meters of books to accommodate and intend doing so using single and double-sided bookshelves. Residents should have no fear that the library facility will be downgraded; our lease from County Hall will, in any event, demand that we continue to offer a hgh quality service and they will dictate, as now, the books we shall display on our shelves. But we believe that we must increase the numbers coming through the doors and achieve much greater use of the space and its sustainability. In the top left you will see the green / yellow area, which is designated our café zone. Bottom left, the area with grey shapes is our training / conference zone, which could act
as a ‘spill-over’ area if the café zone is particularly busy. In this area we shall conduct IT courses for silver surfers, the most popular of the suggested uses and hold meetings with the likes of Age UK etc. We are also offering this space to the school as an small overflow classroom. It will be equipped with a screen and overhead projector for use with laptops. This zone is bordered by the backs of single-sided bookcases; red for holding adult books and blue for those of the children. Next to the training zone is a blue area, which is designated for the sole use of children and parents. To the right of the childrens’ area is the PC station. The current number of PCs will be reduced to 4. The WiFi will stay but we hope to upgrade it to give stronger coverage and the computers, currently ‘dumb’ terminals linked to the County Council server may be upgraded to allow us to link directly into the fibre-optic Internet. It is vital that we achieve better, faster connectivity. The space to the right of the plan consists of a kitchen, needed to help serve refreshments in the café zone. But the doors, currently opening into a storage area and a staff toliet will be blocked off; you can’t have a toilet directly accessible off an area preparing food. However we shall still offer a two-toilet arrangement, including one for the disabled together with baby-changing facilities. Meet the team The time is right to introduce the Ratby Library Group management team so that we’re no longer faceless individuals and so that if you see us in the street you can stop us to ask about any detail of our plans. Graham Stanley chairs the group. Born in Ashby and educated at Alderman Newton’s Grammar School and the University of Hull, I gained a BSc Honours degree in economics. variety of manufacturing, distribution and capital plant integration companies, for which I’ve travelled widely in Europe. I have lived in Ratby since 1990. Ken Hunnybun is our Volunteer Coordinator, a key role as we intend to operate with volunteers only. Ken was born on the Isle of Wight, starting life as a shipwright apprentice. Following National Service he moved into youth work, training in Leicester. He gained a BA Honours and latterly managed a scheme involving volunteers with young offenders. Retiring in 1999 he has served as a Borough Councillor and a Parish Councillor and was central to the publication of the 2004 Parish Plan, some of whose suggestions are mirrored in our plan for the library. Ken is Treasurer of the Village Hall Committee, Treasurer of the Ratby Local History Group and Chair of the Ratby Parish Council Advisory Group. Avril Hunnybun is the Secretary of the Ratby Library Group. Avril was born in South Shield, Co Durham but shows no sign of the north-east dialect as her father was an Army Major who travelled widely with his family as his postings demanded. Avril has lived in Ratby for 32 years and has been a GP surgery administrator but currently works in the care industry as a financial administrator. Avril is a Parish Councillor and Secretary of the Ratby Parish Council Advisory Group. Both Avril and Ken believe the library / community hub will become a vital asset to Ratby and its residents. Reece Pollard is our new Youth Coordinator. He is tasked with encouraging the youth members of our community. Sadly time has been short to get a picture of Reece but hopefully next time. Reece is currently a year-13 student at Groby Community College, where there are many very creative individuals; he has the
remit of helping, with his peers in college, to create our brand logo and web site. We are determined to spread involvement across the village. Reece plans to go to De Montfort University in September. The position of treasurer will become vacant shortly. Presently one of the owners of a business, which we will contract to deliver the café solution holds the post but is moving on, subsequent to the submission of the business plan, to drive his own loose-leaf tea business forward. We wish him well. Timeframe for our plans? That’s a very good question and one we cannot answer accurately right now; it depends upon a number of factors, including but not exclusively – 1. Will the County Council accept our business plan? 2. When shall we have detailed discussions / negotiations with them leading to the release of transitional funding cash? 3. When will they be able to train our volunteers, which now number 32? 4. When will we sign the lease, needed before we create the business and apply for charity status and from this to apply to funders for grants to make our space ambitions a reality? We want to start as soon as possible because from April we lose one month’s worth of funding support for every month that passes. But we must be realistic that the date of us taking over the building could be anytime from September 2015 to April 2016. We shall continue, through the columns of ‘Your Local’ and ‘WOT’ to keep Ratby residents fully updated with our plans and progress. But now you know who we are, please just stop us and ask. The library building Our view on buying the building is to wait until it is operating successfully as a community hub, delivering a diverse range of activities and then to apply for grants to buy it for a community trust. The Parish Council Ratby Library Group has held two formal
meetings with the parish council at County Hall, meetings being chaired by Councillor Ozzy O’Shea; these were on the 10th and 26th February. The Parish Council has met some of our incidental costs, for which we thank them. We suggested they might consider sponsoring the training and conference zone out of their reserves at a cost of something like £4000 £5000. We await their decision.
‘One Stop’ store is ‘Stepping Out’ at the Village Hall, Station Road, Kirby Muxloe. Our local store ‘One Stop’ situated on Main Street has contributed money to enable the Village Hall to have the foyer redecorated. There kind donation means the Kirby Players will be able to welcome their audiences to a refurbished foyer when they perform their next production ‘Stepping Out’- a comedy by Richard Harris - Directed by Margaret Wood 29th April – 2nd May 2015 at 7.30pm. This play had a very successful run in the West End and is a delightfully warm and very funny play about the lives, laughs and loves of a group of women (and one man) attending a weekly tap-dancing class. Don’t miss the chance to see this play that was voted ‘Comedy of the Year’ by The Evening Standard Drama Awards. Book now 07804 435 235 or contact us on www.kirbyplayers.co.uk.

County Councillors Report Ratby and Groby Division County - Councillor Ozzy O’Shea Tel: 0116 2394 336 or 07808 585 825 - Email ozzyoshea@hotmail.com However they did suggest the Parish Council could build an office on the side of the Library.
Council Tax. The County Council at its budget meeting on Wednesday 18th February voted to increase the County Council tax element by 1.99% from April this year. Both the police and Fire Authority have also voted to put up their Council tax element by 1.99%. The Borough Council has again agreed to take the government relief grant and has frozen their Council tax with a zero% increase.
Ratby Library Update. Ratby Library Group has been named as the preferred bid to run Ratby Library. They now must submit a business plan to the County Council. I have held two meeting with the Parish Council and the Ratby Library Group at County Hall. The Parish Council had wanted to purchase the Library for the village and move their office into the Library to have a Community hub and let Ratby Library Group run the Library service. However the Ratby Library Group did not want the Parish Council to purchase the Library they were concerned it would be purchased with tax payer’s money. The Parish Council did confirm it could do this within its current precept. The Ratby Library Group also stated that they needed the whole space to run all their planned activities and as such would not have room for the Parish Council to have a secure office.
I would like to thank both the Parish Council and the Ratby Library for supporting the future of the Library and wish the Ratby Library Group every success in their venture.

TRUE BLUE DANCE CREW OPEN SHOW AT SADLER’S WELLS! Sunday 1st February saw 47 Dancers take to the West End Stage at one of the most prestigious venues in Europe, Sadler’s Wells. The dancers aged between 6 and 22 left the village of Ratby via VIP Coach bound for London’s West End, this is the second trip for the Dancers after a fantastic performance last year at Her Majesty’s Theatre. The girls again this year were asked to open the variety show seeing acts from all across the country in front of a crowd of nearly 1,000. The rehearsals have taken place over the last six months for this amazing experience. On arrival we were all briefed and taken to the most fantastic dressing rooms where many stars have taken to the floor for practice. The royal ballet frequent the Sadler’s Wells venue throughout the year and also many dance stars such as “Diversity” have shared the dressing rooms.
We were then met by the stage manager and Gary Weston, Star of many West End productions, such as cats, Mama Mia, Evita and his new role soon to take start in the Jersey Boys. Gary took a heart pumping warm up before we returned to the dressing room for our first taste on such an impressive stage. We were soon called for our first of 4 dress rehearsals. The show, some 2 ½ hours saw True Blue dancers on stage for 4 x 6 minute routines…26 minutes ….. a lifelong dream for so many dancers! Bright Lights, fantastic sound….The rehearsals were stunning and the reaction from the crowd of dancers and visitors was overwhelming…. Our girls were now ready to smash the evening performance!! Over 200 travelled from Leicester in support of
True Blue…They were very vocal at the show and were all blown away by the stunning performances the girls put out. A Group Modern mix opened the show seeing all 47 on stage, followed by a 20 strong squad of street dancers. The second half saw our very emotional Lyrical routine, danced in pink in support of this years charity, Cancer Research. Our last number was a Beyonce mix performed by the Senior/Elite dancers. All routines saw a standing ovation for the girls. The outfits for the dancers are all made to measure by my mum, and the work she put in for this event was tremendous. The group have now made many lifelong friends in the West End and our dancers are commended and credited by all concerned as they are of such a high standard and so professional. The group have had many offers for future work and are already planning a return trip early next year to the London Palladium!!! The group are a non-profit making community team with over 60 members aged from 5 upwards. We train at Ratby Village Hall and Fosse Neighbourhood Centre, and are now into our 17th year as a Group. Alex Pool is the Head Coach and Head of Streetdance, Rebecca Barrett Senior Assistant Coach and Sadie Hurst is the Junior Assistant and Performing Arts Coach. If you would like more information regarding classes and a chance to perform on a West End Stage - then contact Angie Phillips on 07841 645674……. Reach for the Stars with True Blue Dance Crew!!

Working in small groups, this introductory session was designed to enhance students aptitude for problem solving, creativity, design and engineering and was especially geared to complement to the National Curriculum. Approximately 30 Year 9 pupils worked on a project called The Wind Turbine Challenge, where they had to design and construct a wind turbine to produce the greatest amount of electricity. The turbine had to be free-standing and structurally robust to support heavy components and moving parts. The project not only had time constraints, but also budgetary and aesthetical considerations.
We are busy organising our Annual Twilight Walk on Sat 25th April from the King Power Stadium, Leicester and we really need your help!!! This special night in Leicester annually unites sisters, mothers, daughters, friends, partners and colleagues from all over the East Midlands to have fun, remember loved ones and raise money for their local Hospice. Unfortunately, we only have half of the required number of volunteers needed for the night and with safety being such an important part of the event, it would be great to get this all sorted and spaces filled nice and early. If you are available from 5pm till 10pm on the night, we would love to hear from you. Please contact: fundraising@loros.co.uk or call: 0116 2318484 for further information.
The school’s Deputy Headteacher, Simon Andrews said “We were delighted to have this amazing opportunity. It will encourage our pupils to connect the taught elements of Science and Technology to what happens in engineering in the real world. By taking part in this STEM day, we are hoping to put the spark back into these subjects and demonstrate to pupils that they are fun.”
Free trees from Woodland Trust
THE WOODLAND TRUST sends out free trees every March and November to groups across the UK. Packs come in various mixes of 30, 105 or 420 saplings approximately 20-40cm tall. The charity wants to help school, youth and community groups bring people together to plant green shared spaces. It says that “Planting trees is also an ideal way of creating a beautiful, living tribute to those who have helped shape your local community.” You can apply for multiple packs (e.g. 1x105 wild harvest, 1x30 copse, 1x30 hedge) up to a maximum of 420 trees per delivery season. Applications for packs to plant in November 2015 can be submitted online now until 3 September, while stocks last. Visit our website today for more information and help with how to apply. www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/plant-trees/in-yourcommunity.
