Tech savvy school nurses from Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust are up for two national awards in recognition of the outstanding patient experiences they are delivering to pupils in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

health and wellbeing issues including self-harm and bullying, drug and alcohol use, smoking, healthy eating, sexual health and mental health.

Staff have developed a unique ChatHealth messaging service that is bucking healthcare trends and leading the way forward at a national level in making school nursing accessible to young people.

The team is developing other innovative ways of supporting teens including video-chat clinics and web-forums hosted by nurses – and ChatHealth is now piloting in special schools, increasing support for young people with additional needs. It follows the launch of a trailblazing website for children www.healthforkids.co.uk launched by the Trust early in the year.

The text helpline for 11-19s is a finalist project in two categories of the Patient Experience Network national awards - “Communicating Effectively with Patients and Families” and “Innovative Use of Technology/Social Media.”

The pioneering service, which has been codesigned by young people themselves, gives 65,000 young people quicker access to NHS care if they send enquiries from smartphones and mobile devices. Teenagers can ask for help about a range of issues. Nurses say more new students now make contact including more teenage boys who are usually less likely than girls to approach a healthcare professional and talk about their problems.

Judges from the Patient Experience Network said, “It is extremely encouraging to learn about national initiatives which demonstrate a real commitment to ensuring that the voice of the patient is continually being sought through a variety of different and innovative approaches.” The awards are the first of their kind in the UK and celebrate healthcare staff who are developing best practice around improving patient experiences.

“The teenage years can be a difficult time and we launched the service in 2013 because some young people say they are more likely to ask for support if they’ve got choices about how to get in touch” says Maggie Clarke, Senior Nurse Professional Lead for School Nursing at Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust. “We continue to offer weekly clinics in schools, for young people who prefer seeing a nurse in person. But the option of sending a text is available all the time. It’s about improving access to help for young people.”

Winners will be announced at the national awards finals and conference in Birmingham on 11 March 2015. The school nursing service is jointly funded by the city and county councils. “If we engage with young people in more innovative ways they’re more likely to take an interest in their own wellbeing,” says Ernie White, cabinet member for public health at Leicestershire County Council. “If we get healthy dialogue going with young people at an early stage, we’ll help them stay well for much longer as they grow older.”

ALBUM TO RAISE CASH FOR WHICH CHARITY HELPED FAMILY songs.

His first task will be to listen to those living on the estates and then to seek to provide for their spiritual needs through opportunities to meet and build relationships, socialise, and learn about the Christian faith. Stephen and his wife Sharon will eventually live on the estate and are excited about discovering ways to serve their local community.

The charity has helped her son Billy, who suffered a cardiac arrest when he was 13 months old. The incident happened at the family home in Loughborough, in 2012. Charlotte said “I watched him go blue in my arms while the paramedics worked on him and I didn’t know whether or not he had died. The paramedic didn’t know whether to shock him as he was so small, but he did and called for an ambulance to take him to hospital. I wasn’t sure whether I would see him alive again” Billy was diagnosed with cardiacfibroma - a benign tumour which measured about 6cm by 4cm - growing on his heart and needs regular check-ups and assessment to make sure his heart is beating strongly. Now, Charlotte, with the help of her dad Rob Francis, 51, have created a charity album and recorded it with the help of producer David Moore at Studio 3Zero, in Birstall. Charlotte said “It’s made up of lullabies I sing to him at night and songs I sing with my guitar when he’s in the bath. There’s another song about going to the zoo, which I sang to him on the way to Twycross. They’re all very personal and mean something to us. “I hope we can raise some money for a very good cause” Gill Smart, Heart Link treasurer said “You would think newborn babies come with everything perfect but some times they don’t and parents don’t know what to do. So we look after the whole family, not just the children because everyone needs support. We rely on the public helping us out as it’s the only way we exist. We don’t get any funding at all.” Charlotte said “Heart Link gave us somewhere to sleep right next to the ward where Billy was and offered a lot of facilities to help Billy with his recovery and to make us feel at home. Teamed with the charity Keep the Beat and all the hard-working staff, they make the children’s heart ward, Ward 30, as comfortable and homely as they can.” Charlie and Robbie’s Heart Link CD, which has 5 songs on and costs £5 is available from Charlie by emailing charliefrancis@hotmail.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Rothley & Mountsorrel areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get

from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Leading charity Action for Children is teaming up with The World of Eric Carle™ and encouraging children’s centres, nurseries and groups for under-5s across Leicestershire to host a Giant Wiggle on Thursday 19 March 2015 to celebrate the UK’s most read children’s book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar™.

Potholes and fly tipping are just two of the street faults that can be reported via the website www.FixMyStreet.com, along with vandalism, graffiti, dog fouling and many other common community issues.

The event will bring together under-5s to wiggle along in giant caterpillar conga lines, encouraging them to help others, and open up their imaginations through storytelling and creative activities.

While most of us know that the council are responsible for fixing these things, we may not know which council, let along which department in which council. With FixMy Street, all you have to do is locate the problem on a map, and select a category: the site then sends it off to the right place to get it fixed. All reports are published on the site, as well as being sent to the council. Browsing your own postcode can be interesting, as you soon learn what the persistent problems are in your area, and whether or not they are being fixed. There's also the opportunity to discuss individual reports in the comments section. FixMyStreet comes from the UK not-for-profit organisation mySociety, and is one of its longest-running and most-used services. It is just one of several projects aimed at making it easier for citizens to get things changed in their own community. SOAR VALLEY CHARTER NIGHT

“A Tinge of Green”

President Alison Porter of the Rotary Club of the Soar Valley welcomed Assistant District Governor John Dehnel and 75 Rotarians plus guests to the clubs 38th annual charter dinner held at Birstall Golf Club on Monday January 26th. The Toast Master was Rtn Eric Hill and speeches were given by Pres. Alison ,Asst Dist. Gov. John and President Elect Richard Hilliar. The main speaker was retired District Judge Mervyn Harris who gave us a very interesting and amusing talk about his experiences whilst serving on the Bench. A very enjoyable evening was had by all.

Can I detect a touch of malicious envy in the article by “An Impartial Rothley Resident” in your January issue ? The one thing the article certainly demonstrated was “Feminine Partiality” .

I came to Rothley some 10 years ago, having moved up from Northamptonshire where my wife and I resided for some 18 years. We are both originally from Leicester and, from an average middle class upbringing; we have worked hard, saved, and made some capital by our progressive house purchases. As a result, when we came back to Leicester shire on retirement, we looked for a semi-rural location, free from excess traffic and overcrowding. We were delighted when we found our current bungalow and invested most of our savings in purchasing it. Rothley had a reputation, at that time, as a quiet, quality, and desirable village. That was in 2004. Almost immediately housing developments began to encircle the village, filling all peripheral green space and eliminating community separation areas. We, personally, did not object to the initial developments which we saw as inevitable, considering the National housing situation. But then it carried on, and on, and on, until, in the words of Shakespeare, – “A Little More than Enough is By Far Too Much !” The total number of houses built, or to be built, immediately adjacent to Rothley is around 603 to which we can add a further 1,500 houses to be built immediately to the south of Rothley, and north of the A46. From this you can see my point. The developers are concentrating on the local land owners because all “Infrastructure” is already in place. If this is allowed to carry on, it will produce a “Linear City” from Leicester to Loughborough. Charnwood Borough is also allocated 6,000 houses as overspill from Leicester.

The above photograph shows L-R Asst.District Governor John Dehnel, Pres. Alison Porter and Guest Speaker Mervyn Harris.

Why I don’t want my dog

Can I suggest to your writer that she moves to a less desirable area, as she certainly has no feeling for her present quality community, and agitates there for the low cost, densely populated environment she loves.

An Equally Impartial Rothley Resident.

do people get rid of their pets? You would be surprised. So was the Dogs Trust Why charity, when they began to ask for explanations.

handed in his dog to the charity explaining him because One man he couldn’t keep “he looked different after we had walked him in the rain.” Another family complained: “he wags its tail too much”; another that “he chases frogs”; while for another it was because “he was scared of the cat next door.” Energy levels “all came into it: one owner gave up because he did was sleep; we wanted a dog to play with”, while another had the opposite reason: “Too playful; we haven’t sat down since we got him.” (Shame those two families didn’t just swop dogs.)

to stress that people should not buy The Dogs Trust continues

The History Of Anstey’s NatWest Bank Article by Brian Kibble Image 898

Image 904

The recent announcement that NatWest is to close its Anstey Branch in March (along with Syston) prompted me to share some pictures drawn from the Anstey Millennium Collection. Banking in Anstey started at the end of the 19thC with the Northamptonshire Union Bank (1836-1920) responding to the needs of the rapidly growing Boot and Shoe industry and it’s workforce in the village. (Picture 898) shows the building in the Nook in 1920 when the Northamptonshire Union Bank merged with the National Provincial Bank (1836-1970) – Later (picture 900) c1961 together with the interior shot (picture 901) with a notice announcing the arrival of a Saturday banking service. At the same time that the Northamptonshire Union came to Anstey, the Westminster Bank (1834-1968) rented a front room of Eric and Adah Johnstone’s terraced cottage home at 44 Bradgate Road (picture 896) c1968 – this branch was only open once a week on payday Friday at 10am to noon and was manned by one cashier and a guard. July 1968 aw the merger of the Westminster (and closure of the Bradgate Road branch) with the National Provincial (picture 902) which became The National Westminster Bank and in turn today’s NatWest – (picture’s 903 and 904) show the interior in 1990.

Janet Elverstone and her husband Lewis, called me up to see if I’d like to come and look at a war artefact they’d discovered. Belonging to her uncle Arch. Barker who served in the Chindits, this artefact has got me quite excited!

We’ve all had, or will have the unenviable task of going through a deceased relative’s paperwork. It can be upsetting and disheartening, especially if they never liked to throw anything away! But one lucky Leicestershire resident recently discovered a gem whilst looking through her Uncles paperwork.

10

It’s a beautifully preserved, postcard sized book sent to Arch when he was out in India from the Anstey War Service League. Apparently HYHU\ VHUYLQJ RIÀFHU from Anstey was sent one of these little book for Christmas in 1944. The book contains lists of all the Anstey men and women serving with H.M Forces at home and overseas. It also has some beautiful illustrations, a story and a poem to keep the soldiers busy and remind them of home. For me one of the most wonderful additions to this book are the letters from the

people of Anstey to the serving soldiers. Messages from the Parish Council, Police Force, Fire Service, WI and Schools all serve to make this a very personal piece. Alice Smart writes as an Anstey mother and G. Greatorex as an Anstey Wife. Two beautiful letters are written from Betty Thurman and Michael Martin of Latimer Street School and it would be interesting to see if they or their relatives still live in Anstey. Please get in touch if you have a link to this publication or if you know if anything like this was sent out by other Leicestershire villages? We’d be really interested to hear from relatives of those who contributed to the book and also if you have a copy of it too. Snibston’s proposed closure date announced

Have your say on proposals for county waste sites

IT IS PROPOSED that Snibston will close to visitors on Friday, July 31st. Richard Blunt, cabinet member for museums, said: “I’m proposing that the museum, in its current form, will close on July 31st. I wanted to announce the likely date as soon as I could, so that staff, volunteers and visitors have as much notice as possible. I know that staff have been anxious to have some firm information about the date.

The council wants to hear people’s views on a variety of proposals to reduce costs, without having to close sites completely. Blake Pain, county cabinet member for waste, said: “The council needs to save £1.1 million from its household waste and recycling sites budget, as part of its overall £120 million savings.

“At its last meeting, cabinet asked the director of adults and communities to draw up a programme to implement the closure and the detailed work to support this is in hand. “I appreciate that the full council is likely to debate this issue on February 18th but I wanted to give an indicative date now and I’ll provide an updated statement, following the meeting.”

RESIDENTS, charities and businesses can help shape the county council’s proposals to save £1.1 million at household waste and recycling sites.

“We have a range of ideas and we now want to hear people’s views on how they could work.” Proposals for waste sites include: • Restricting free use of the sites by those living outside of Leicestershire county • Restricting free access to use of the sites by charities, parish councils and other groups • Restricting free disposal of non-household waste such as bricks, rubble and other DIY waste • Reducing site opening times

The proposed date was chosen to link in with the end of the school year in Leicestershire and other parts of the Midlands.

At the moment, the council spends £27.4 million per year on waste and recycling and it needs to reduce that figure by £4.9 million by 2018/19. Alongside proposed changes to household waste and recycling sites, the council is also reviewing recycling and reuse credits. Around £120,000 is paid each year to approximately 40 charity and community groups that collect household waste for reuse and recycling.

Earlier this month, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet agreed to close the current venue. If nothing was done, the cost to the council has been estimated at £900,000 per year.

Charities and community groups will be directly engaged with to shape proposals to ensure they are supported in the most effective way. Options for making savings could include only paying credits for materials where other recycling or reuse facilities are not available - e.g. mattresses or carpet.

The decision came after the council and an independent assessor judged the Friends of Snibston’s plans to retain the current venue were unviable.

The consultation will run from February 2 to April 26. You can have your say at www.leics.gov.uk/haveyoursay/futurewastemanagement

The Century Theatre and the country park will remain open after this date. The historic pithead buildings, which are a scheduled ancient monument, will continue to be maintained.

The council’s cabinet will consider the results of the consultation and decide on which proposals to take forward later this year. For details of the sites and what you can recycle there, please see www. leics.gov.uk/recycling _household_waste_sites

Want to support LOROS? You’re barking up the right tree! LOROS, the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice are calling upon the nations favourite four legged friends to help raise the vital funds needed to provide care and support to over 2,500 patients and their families each year, at their annual Paws 4 a Cause event. Paws 4 a Cause on Sunday 29th March, is a sponsored 4km dog walk starting and finishing in the scenic grounds of Abbey Park, Leicester. There are two start times to choose from 10am or 11am and every dog will receive their very own ‘doggy’ bag at the end. There will also be a prize for the dog who raises the most sponsorship! Laura Fitzsawyer, Fundraising Co-ordinator said, “This is the 4th year that we have organised Paws 4 a Cause. It is a great event that is fun for all the family! Over the past 4 years it has raised over £30,000 for the Hospice, and this year we want to make that total to over £40,000! The route has changed slightly this year, starting at the Oval rather than the Bandstand. We are extremely grateful to Abbey Park and Abbey Park Café for supporting our event again this year.” For FREE registration and to receive your fundraising pack, please register at loros.co.uk/paws or call the Fundraising Department on 0116 231 8431.

The Green Place News Refurbishment news

As you may be aware, we are improving the café and shop so they’ll be more inviting as well as financially sustainable. So far the whole of the café area has been emptied and some of the brickwork sandblasted to create interesting feature walls. The floor is being levelled ready for the installation of underfloor heating, which will be powered by a new woodburning stove. The floor will then be tiled throughout to maximise heat transfer, the walls will be insulated and some windows and doors will be replaced to improve energy efficiency. We are excited but also daunted by all the changes (and expenditure), and we hope you will like the new look.

Re-opening – March (?) We all know that any sort of building work always take longer than you expect! We hope to re-open on Saturday 21st March, but this is obviously subject to the progress of the refurbishment work. We will keep you updated in our next newsletter, and you can follow our progress on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TheGreenPlaceSileby

Survey – help us grow The Green Place In order to ensure the future of The Green Place, we need to find out how best to increase visitor numbers. To help us make good decisions, we have produced a short online survey which we hope you will fill out – it only takes a few minutes. If you take part in the survey, you’ll be entered into our prize draw, from which the email addresses of five lucky people will be drawn (so make sure you provide it). Prizes include afternoon tea for two, wind-up torch, Complete wasters T-shirt and more. Please take the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/R6MDXCB

Ebay ‘Restore’

Warning about back-of-the-van mattress sales

Trading Standards officers are warning residents to be wary of cold callers selling mattresses door-todoor. Officers have had reports of cold callers selling cheap, fake mattresses across the county from the back of vans. The mattresses that have been sold in Wigston, Glenfield, Oadby and Mountsorrel have the fake logos of wellknown manufacturers and retailers. David Bull, head of the county council’s Trading Standards Service, said: “Our investigations have found that some mattresses, being sold on the door step, did not comply with the British Safety standard.

To bring in some income during the lean winter months, we have been upcycling furniture and quirky items to sell on Ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/completewasters-thegreenplace

“Sellers will claim that the consumer is getting a bargain and usually claim the mattresses are of a far superior quality than they are.

Donations of suitable furniture or miscellany for upcycling would be gratefully received. If you have anything to donate please get in touch (contact details below).

“Our advice is not to buy from the back of van, as you cannot be sure they have been manufactured in a safe and regulated manner.

Music @ The Green Place We are pleased to announce the dates for this year’s music events: Saturday 20th June and Saturday 19th September. Put these dates in your diary now! Tickets will be on sales from April.

New website Our website is currently being re-developed by a DMU graduate. It should have a fresh and exciting new look, with all the regular event news and features.

All the best from Darren, Deborah, Monica and all at the Green Place. The Green Place, 6 Cossington Road, Sileby (next to Chine House vets) , LE12 7RS Telephone 01509815181 - info@completewasters.co.uk - www.completewasters.co.uk

“Please alert Trading Standards to any doorstep mattress sellers, as we want to protect residents from unsafe mattresses.” If you have bought a mattress recently or have any concerns about this then please contact Trading Standards via Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06. THE MONDAY CLUB

Shopping Habits Change

ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY

How often do you shop for food? These days, chances are that you are buying ‘little and often’, popping into your mini-supermarket several times a week, and buying only what you need for the next couple of days. It is a thrifty way of living; the trend has helped to reduce food wastage by as much as a fifth, compared with seven years ago. According to a survey by Waitrose, one in four of us is visiting a ‘convenience’ store at least once a day. Perhaps it gives a whole new insight into ‘Give us today our daily bread…’

Cinema Costs WHEN WAS the last time you went to see a film? Did you tally up just how much the evening cost you? It seems that going to the cinema is no longer the cheap alternative to a night at the theatre or a meal at a restaurant. A recent study by the Sunday Telegraph has found that a single ticket in some urban venues can cost more than £20, while just popcorn can be as much as £5. Figures from the British Film Institute (BFI) show that the average cost of a cinema ticket has risen by 26 per cent in the past five years. Whereas in 2008 it was £5.18, nowadays the average price is £6.54. BFI figures show that overall, the average price of a cinema ticket has soared above inflation for the past 30 years.

The February 9th’s Meeting was initially focused on the AGM, wherein there was much reported on the previous year’s activities and events all of which were acknowledged and accepted. Although the attendance of members was rather small – several Members were struck down by the distressing virus presently circulating the villages, this did not detract from the happy atmosphere, which indicated to the Committee, that we are providing adequate interest and a good atmosphere month on month. Sadly we have lost a few Members through illness, disability and death, but we have recently had three new Members join us and are hopeful that the Programme for 2015 will be of interest and encourage new Members when they will receive a very warm welcome. Following through the business of the AGM, we were treated to a a very amusing and interesting talk given by the Rev. Sharon Constable entitled “Weddings through the Ages”. Our Members were invited to bring along and display their Wedding photographs and Sharon proceeded to take us through the changes of styles of Wedding dresses through the 20th Century; it was also fun to discover who was who from the Members and hear some of their stories of the background of how they managed their Weddings at the various times, through the World Wars 1914/1918 and 1940/1945, 1920 and subsequent decades.

Sharon had been a Priest for 16 years and described the changes in the styles of both Wedding dresses and the changes of the conduct of the Wedding Services; apparently latterly Bridesmaids precede the entrance of the Bride which was an American idea. Dresses of all shapes, sizes and colours were gradually introduced, along with sizes and content of the Bouquets for the Bride and her Maids. Our next Meeting will be on Monday 9th March, when Mr. Christopher Tarratt will talk about “A day in the Life of a Jeweller”. The well known Leicester Jewellers “Tarratts” have been part of Leicester City life for very many years, so his talk should be very interesting, I wonder if he will bring us any samples for free! Do try to come along and join our happy group. Our Meetings take place at 2.15pm at the Cropston Evangelical Chapel, Station Road, Cropston, LE7 7HP on the 2nd Monday of every month. Plenty of parking space available. To find out more about The Monday Club, please ring me on 0116 2363467. I have an ansophone, so if I am not available, please leave a message and telephone number and I will return your call.

Ann Farndon.

ROTARY SUPPORTS MOUNTSORREL YOUTH CAFE President Alison Porter of The Rotary Club of the Soar Valley welcomed local MP Nicky Morgan and the Mayor and Mayoress of Charnwood to the Mountsorrel Youth Cafe on Saturday January 24th. A previously installed engraved plaque was unveiled by Nicky Morgan outlining the Rotary Club's involvement and Nicky gave a short address welcoming everyone to the cafe and thanking the Club for its donation to update the kitchen equipment. The Rotary Club together with Rotary Foundation (Rotary's own International Charity) gave a grant of £1000 to update the kitchen equipment to enable it to become a community based cafe open to all ages rather than just a place for the village young people to meet. The cafe will now open Monday – Friday 9am to 2pm providing lunches and light snacks for all as well as its usual evening activities. Following the official opening Nicky and the Mayor and Mayoress joined over 20 senior citizens for a three course lunch. In the next few weeks a party of young people led by Graham Lloyd the Cafe Youth Leader will join the Rotary Club members on a litter pick exercise around the village under the Keep Britain Tidy Campaign.
