Rothley and Soar Valley Lions Club During the past year the club has given away some £17,000 to various charitable causes – the main beneficiaries being the Air Ambulance, Hope against Caner, LOROS, Rainbows, Vista and as recently reported in ‘Your Local’ magazine, in conjunction with the Thurnby and Leicester Charnwood Lions Clubs, Warning Zone. In addition some 160 food parcels were distributed just before Christmas in the Soar Valley to elderly and needy families. In order to do this, various events are held throughout the year. The main ones being the 10K road race around Rothley in June, a Golf day in September, a collection at Budgens Stores in November and various raffles in various shops and public houses throughout the year. The club meets twice a month, usually on Monday evenings, one is a business meeting and one is a social meeting with partners for events such as a dinner or skittles match. If anyone would like further information about the club and its activities please telephone Lion Frank on 0116 230 2433.

Charnwood offers help for heroes A NEW Armed Forces Champion has been appointed in Charnwood to support the brave men and women who have fought for our country. Councillor Hilary Fryer, a former officer in the WRAF, will act as the driving force behind a package of support which will be offered to Armed Forces personnel and their families. She was appointed after the Council’s Cabinet approved an Armed Forces Community Covenant which sets out a package of support including: • Discount corporate membership at Charnwood’s three leisure centres • Provide the most up-to-date advice and support to injured personnel who resettle in Charnwood • Personnel will not be disadvantaged by a requirement to have a local connection to qualify for inclusion on our housing register • Signpost personnel and their families to community services • Working closely with Charnwood Together to widen the impact of the Covenant • Meet annually with Armed Forces representatives to review the progress of the Covenant Cllr Fryer said: “I’m honoured to become the Council’s Armed Forces Champion. My father served in the Army for nearly 35 years so I was born into ‘Army life’.

“The Council already recognizes, in a number of ways, the extraordinary sacrifices made by Armed Forces personnel. “It is only right that we take that recognition further by giving a little more extra help and support to a small group of people who have sacrificed such a lot for so many.”

Continued from front page He or she will also get to bring their family or friends to the big occasion and watch the match courtesy of BT Sport. Runners-up prizes include FA Cup semifinal tickets and football shirts signed by the BT Sport presenting team. To enter, contestants - open to UK residents aged 13 to 16 years old - simply need to shoot and record an original, one minute, single-camera-shot of themselves presenting a news report around the 2013/14 FA Cup. Entries can be shot using a smartphone or professional camera but cannot include additional footage, interviews, music or graphics and should feature only the individual entering the competition. Contestants then simply need to upload the video to their YouTube or Vimeo account and send the URL to BT Sport as part of the entry form submission on the BT Sport website. Humphrey, who will help identify the winner as a judge, said: “BT Sport is thoroughly enjoying covering the FA Cup, the world’s oldest and greatest domestic football competition. We want to celebrate the tournament by unearthing future talent and great stories, by giving youth an opportunity to join in with BT Sport. This could be a great moment for one lucky girl or boy - I cannot wait to view the entries and present with that winner on FA Cup Final day.” Grant Best, BT Sport’s senior executive channel producer, who will judge entries alongside Jake and the BT Sport team, added: “Watch the FA Cup with us on BT Sport and send us your entry based on the stories and dramas that this year’s FA Cup competition will present. We’re looking for bright, engaging and captivating young talent as we celebrate the magic of the FA Cup this season. Pay close attention to all of the terms and conditions on the btsport.com website to make sure you are available on certain dates. You will also need your parent or guardian’s permission to enter, and, you might need a Child Performance Licence from your local council to take up the prize, so do plenty of research!” Entries remain open until midnight on 17 February, after which a final four shortlist will be drawn up and those shortlisted contacted on 20 February before 5pm. The final four will then attend a special judging morning at BT Sport’s state-of-the-art studios at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 3 April, where they will receive top tips on TV presenting from Jake and the BT Sport team, before recording a non-live, short piece to camera on the BT Sport TV set. The competition is open to UK residents aged 13 to 16 years old who have parental/guardian permission to enter, with full terms and conditions available at btsport.com/youngpresenter.

Mountsorrel WI

Mountsorrel WI met on Thursday 9th January at the Parish Rooms. The speaker was Sandy Leong who gave us a very entertaining talk on the history and meaning of nursery rhymes. As Sandy said rhymes are passed down through generations and are still recited today but what exactly is the meaning of these? As we discovered are they really appropriate for young ears? Some contain social comment, others malicious gossip, they include coded insults and there is even the odd one designed to entertain children!! We were fascinated to hear that 'pop goes the weasel' was actually about pawning the Sunday best coat every week to fund a drink and a little food! You may have thought Old Mother Hubbard was just about a poor old dog but in fact was comment on Cardinal Wolsey's inability to gain a divorce from Rome for Henry VIII. And a word of warning: Lucy Locket and Kitty Fisher may not be all they seem! We were all able to remember 21 out of the 22 rhymes covered which just goes to show how ingrained these are in the memory of many people. We did wonder, however, if the tradition of retelling these historic rhymes is being carried on today. The next open meeting will be held on 13th February at 7.30pm in the Parish Rooms. The speaker will be Roxanne Dinsdale on Belly Dancing! All visitors will be very welcome so why not come along and try it! We certainly are not just Jam and Jerusalem. Please just turn up and be assured of a very warm welcome or for further details contact Alison Aldwinckle on 07517232029.

THE MONDAY CLUB ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY Once again The Monday Club members arrived with husbands, and friends to enjoy our ninth Christmas Luncheon at the Birstall Golf Club on Monday 9th December 2013. Part of the enthusiasm expressed on these occasions is the fact that year on year, friends meet up with a host of tales to tell of family events experienced during the previous year! After Lunch, it was our pleasure to present Major Kathy Rowe, representing the Salvation Army, with a cheque for £256.23 by our Treasurer Mrs. Gill Smart, supported by the Club’s Committee, as featured below. This was the amount collected during the past year for the Charity.

Have a January clear-out with Freeuse Anyone having a January clear-out can recycle old and unwanted items via a free give and take website. www.freeuseit.org enables Leicester and Leicestershire residents to upload items they no longer want - and for others to claim them and take them home for free. Run by the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, which is made up of the county, district and borough councils and supported by Leicester City Council, the website has enabled more than 170 tonnes of waste to be diverted from landfill since it was set up in December 2009. Pam Posnett, chairman of the Leicestershire Waste Partnership, said: “It often makes sense to have a January clear-out to get rid of old and unwanted items and make way for the new festive gifts. “Freeusing can help ensure items find new homes rather then being sent to landfill. What is one person’s rubbish can be another person’s treasure.”

Our first Meeting of the Club on January 13th was thankfully accompanied by plenty of sunshine although very cold. Previously for two years, we have had to cancel, much to the disappointment of both Members and our prospective Speaker.

Items that have been listed on www.freeuseit.org so far this month include a scanner, cake and biscuit tins, TVs, a computer monitor and sofas*.

As well as the website, a Freeuse smartphone app is also available to use. After the “Business” section for the Club Meeting, we were pleased to enjoy a delightful spread of a variety of cakes etc. to have with our Tea and then proceed to take part in two very amusing games. The first one being an old favourite of guessing from photos, the celebrities names and the other created by our Member Mrs. Diane Rouse which was a novel twist on “Pass Parcel” which required and deftness of hand. An excellent conclusion TELthe 0800 6446150 - EMAILbrainwork info@communityeye.net - WEB www.communityeye.net Methodist Hall, Howe Lane Rothley - 3-5pm 11 to the first Meeting of this year.. We need your rubbish please! Ladies Circle

Loughborough Seventh-day Adventist church was started almost 40 years ago but has always met in rented premises. Whilst we are very happy at our current rented location, our dream is to own a church building of our own and we have been very busy over the last 3 years raising funds through sponsored events, car boot sales, social evenings, Easyfundraising, sales of hand-made Christmas cards etc. Summer Stars Holiday Bible club has been organised by Loughborough SDA Church for over 3 years now and was enjoyed by over 50 children from Mountsorrel and the surrounding villages last year. It was great to see the smiles on the faces of the children as they got involved with activities such as clay modelling, cooking, music, drama and singing. However, there is so much more we would like to do for our local community. Toddler group, choir, Pathfinders Youth Club, music group, Youth drama group, coffee mornings, community fun days and cooking demonstrations are all activities which we would like to run. Owning a building would make such a difference in being able to provide these opportunities.

Our latest fundraising venture is recycling. We are collecting waste items and packaging, many of which are not currently recycled through our green bin system. The waste will be sent to a recycling centre where it will be made into items such as watering cans, bins and park benches. Our charity will be given 2p per item on average. Most of the waste would otherwise be sent to landfill so this is a great way of helping the environment whilst raising money to buy a church. How can you help? The items that we can currently send to be recycled are: • Empty biscuit packets from any brand of sweet biscuits (for multipacks such as Penguins we can use both the outer wrapper and the individual ones) • Yoghurt pots from Activia, Actimel or Shape (no other brands please) • Tassimo discs and outer foil packaging • Kenco Eco-Refill Pouches (including Millicano) • Old mobile phones (working or broken)

Richard Farleigh – ex-Dragons’ Den star – appeals for EAST MIDLANDS to learn about fostering I am writing to you on behalf of the 500 children in the East Midlands who urgently need loving fostering homes. With the country currently experiencing a shortage of 9,000 foster carers, I am encouraging your readers to learn more about fostering now, and give children a loving home. After a difficult start in life I was fostered as a child. From my own experiences of growing up in foster care I know what difference a foster family can have on a child’s life, from offering love and support to helping them have a future to look forward to. I’ve gone on to have success in the financial sector and now invest in and assist start-up businesses across the world, though your readers may know me from Dragons’ Den. It’s why I’m supporting Action for Children’s Fostering Myth Busting Academy, and the charity’s drive to find loving foster parents for vulnerable children and young people who urgently need stable homes in the East Midlands. Foster carers play a crucial role in society yet Action for Children found that one in ten people have misconceptions about what fostering is and why children and young people are placed in foster care. It also found that one in three people believe if you live in rented accommodation, are unemployed or are gay you can’t foster - all are untrue. It’s essential we correct these myths and encourage more people from the East Midlands to consider fostering. I would urge your readers to visit Action for Children’s website at actionforchildren.org.uk to find out more about fostering. For people in the East Midlands this could be an important first step to opening up their home to a vulnerable child or young person in desperate need of help. Yours sincerely, - Richard Farleigh

The arrival of those Sunday blues What will your coming week be like? It is likely that you started thinking (and worrying?) about it at 4.13pm on Sunday afternoon. That is the time of the weekend when the ‘Sunday blues’ begin – that mild sense of depression and anxiety that many of us get about the week ahead. Nearly half of us admit that our Sunday evening comfort is dulled at the thought of Monday, according to research by Premier Inn. Mind, the mental health charity, has found that the recession has only increased this unease. Psychologists suggest that ways to counter the Sunday blues include having a busy schedule, doing exercise and being around other people.

FILMREVIEW Delivery Man - 12A Delivery driver David Wozniak (Vince Vaughn) has a life no one would envy:in debt to the mob; a job that's going nowhere and a pregnant girlfriend (Cobie Smulders) who believes their child will be better off without him, then he finds out he's the father of 533 children through sperm donations he made 20 years earlier. Just when things couldn't look any worse David is hit with a lawsuit from 142 of his offspring who demand to know the identity of their biological father. As David struggles to decide whether or not he should reveal his true identity, with the help of his friend, full time Dad and part time lawyer, Brett (Chris Pratt) he embarks on a journey that leads him to discover not only his true self but the father he could become.

Twelve Years A Slave - 15 TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE is based on an incredible true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender), as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon's chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) will forever alter his life.

POPULAR DEMAND SEES CHARITY EXTEND SUPPORT SERVICES Registered charity, the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation, is pleased to announce a new support initiative beginning in February 2014. Support Thursdays will take place on four Thursdays in every month. The drop in sessions will run from 10.30 a.m. until 2.00 p.m. at Ulverscroft Manor. The sessions are open to anyone with a disability or illness, carers, or anyone who feels isolated. Kathleen Wass, Support Services Manager, said “the Support Thursdays have been introduced following a pilot scheme in 2013.”

Council offers help to struggling residents A £110,000 package of support is being offered to residents in Charnwood who need help with their finances. Charnwood Borough Council has approved a £30,000 fund to offer specialist money management and debt advice services on top of an £80,000 fund to help struggling residents pay Council Tax bills. The move comes as the Council approved an updated Local Council Tax Support scheme which will mean people in receipt of Council Tax Support will be asked to pay 15% towards their Council Tax bill as part of the Government’s welfare reform measures. Pensioners and war widows are not affected by these changes.

The sessions will commence on Thursday 6th February and run as follows;

Councillor Jenny Bokor, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Revenues, Benefits and Customer Services, said: “I’m very pleased that the Council has approved this package of support for our most vulnerable residents.

1st Thursday – Health and Wellbeing which includes the opportunity to participate in seated yoga - £2.50 per session or chiropody / reflexology £13.00 per session.

“We know we still live in very challenging times and as we have had to increase the amount people have to contribute towards their Council Tax bill, it is important that we can offer this kind of help.

2nd Thursday – Coffee and Chatter – come along and meet new friends in the splendid surroundings of Ulverscroft Manor. Bring your knitting or a book or just enjoy a laughter and chatter day.

“I would urge anyone who has concerns about how welfare reforms impact their finances to get in touch with us. Our staff are ready and able to offer help and advice.”

3rd Thursday – Support for Carers – If the person you look after couldn’t cope without your assistance then you are a carer and deserve some help and support. Chiropody and reflexology available priced at £13.00 per session. A Support for Carers Leicestershire worker will be attending 10.30am until 12.30pm.

In 2013, the Government abolished Council Tax Benefit as part of the Welfare Reform Act and reduced the amount of money the Council receives to help pay to support benefit recipients on the lowest incomes.

Last Thursday – MS Drop in – Relaxation class 11.00am until 12 noon for a healthy body and mind - £2.50, chiropody and reflexology also available priced at £13.00 per session. Mrs Wass also said that “the Foundation has received many positive enquires and bookings for the forthcoming sessions. We look forward to welcoming you and hope to provide continued support and advice throughout 2014 and beyond.” The drop in sessions are free to attend, with light refreshments available for a small charge. Advance booking is essential for any additional activities. If you would like further information or would like to book in to any of the therapy sessions then please telephone Kathleen or Helen on 01530 244914 or email admin@shuttlewood-clarke.org.

Council Tax Benefit was replaced by a locally designed Council Tax Support scheme which meant anyone of working age and in receipt of benefit had to pay up to 8.5% towards their Council Tax liability in the first year. That has now been increased to 15% to help cover a shortfall in public finances. The contribution will work out at about £2.80 per person per week.
