August 2014
As we enter the eighth month of 2014 realisation hits that our fight for Anstey will be a long one. We look forward to the visit by our M.P Rt. Hon. Stephen Dorrell on 1st August 2014 at The Jubilee Hall starting at 1900. This is your chance to put searching questions to your representative. [I’m sure he needs no reminding that 2015 is a General Election year.] So please put this date in your diary! A positive for the near future is that the figures for housing in the Core Strategy refused by the Government Inspector, are very similar to those found in the 2014 Strategic Housing Market Assessment carried out very recently by all the borough councils in Leicestershire. We still however must wait for the Inspector to examine those figures before weight can be given to the Strategy. We do not know when this will be done. Last week we attended Charnwood Planning Meeting and were pleased to see our Councillors going against the Chair of Planning and rejecting plans for up to 975 houses at Cotes even though Highways raised no objections.
Developers propose a complete rebuild of The Nook, that Highways have approved in order to support the planning application for new houses in Anstey. Object to Charnwood Borough about this absurd design (Planning Number P/13/2340/2). For further information visit our website: www.saveanstey.co.uk
L.C.C Highways have removed their objection to the Cropston Road development and accepted, in essence, a ludicrous plan to replace The Nook roundabout with a twin mini-roundabout system based on inadequate manipulated data. This will result in reduced parking spaces, including blue badge spaces and bus stop positions changed. It can only mean a worse and more dangerous traffic problem than at present. Letters of objection have been sent from every part of the village showing the very strong feeling against these plans. Please keep submitting these letters, normally our planners will keep accepting them after closing date. This application is expected to be discussed at Charnwood Planning meeting on 14th August. Turn out and show your disgust. We will let you have more information closer to the date on our website http://www.saveanstey.co.uk and on Facebook.

Visit to Bradgate by Twinners from Plateau est de Rouen Members of Bradgate Twinning Association were very pleased to welcome thirty four Twinners from Plateau est de Rouen for a long weekend at the beginning of May. They also brought with them thirteen young musicians from the Bonsecours Music School who were hosted by the families of students from the Soar Valley Music Centre. Following a reception at Jubilee Hall when they arrived on Thursday evening our visitors quickly settled in and spent the rest of the evening with their host families. On the Friday we were all up early to set off for a visit to Liverpool and at the planning stage the theme for the weekend gradually evolved into one centred on The Beatles. The New Museum of Liverpool had a whole floor devoted to the Mersey Beat with enough interactive and visuals to keep everyone happy. Most of the English made it thus far but many of our visitors didn't; having been enticed into the Beatles Museum by the signs outside it! We all enjoyed the ambiance of the whole dock area and a picnic lunch and in no time the French were off on a Magical Mystery Tour in their own language. They enjoyed many Beatles highlights including Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields, they took many photos and ended up at the new Cavern. A ride for all past the Race course and and an excellent meal in Aintree before the journey home meant we arrived in Anstey just within the fifteen hours allowed for the coach drivers. On Saturday the students spent the day with their English counterparts at Beaumanor and the Twinners were entertained by their families. The sunny weather meant that for many Bradgate Park and Outwoods (with bluebells in full bloom) were an obvious choice. For others it was Leicester and Richard the third. Most also managed to fit in a visit to a well known local supermarket! The final event of the weekend was an evening buffet with the entertainment, which included many Beatles' songs, provided by the students. Sunday morning saw the customary photograph, taken in front of the war memorial, accompanied by an impromptu rendering of Hey Jude! Farewells were said and the French were on their way; all by 8.30am! A good weekend was had by all and it is hoped that a return visit to France will be made next year. Anne Dutton

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not
just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Thurcaston & Anstey WI Cropston Neighbourhood Plan The production of the Thurcaston & Cropston Neighbourhood Plan is being led by Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council with the support of a working party of local volunteers. Neighbourhood planning is a new process with the reformed Town and Country Planning System agreed by Government through the Localism Act which provides the community with an opportunity to influence the planning and development of their area by producing a statutory planning document which once made will be used to help inform decisions in relation to future planning applications across the parish.
Anstey WI held a coffee evening in the garden of member June Roe. This raised £72.10 which was donated to LOROS in memory of the late Jackie Dawson. A loyal and hardworking member of the institute, Jackie was our treasurer for many years, and more recently served as president. During her long illness, Jackie received excellent care from LOROS. Many WI members had attended her funeral just a few days before the coffee evening.
Soon afterwards, three members and one husband visited Waddesdon Manor on a coach trip organised by the county federation of WIs, and had a very enjoyable day. The photograph shows them enjoying a welcome break after viewing the huge collection of artworks in the house, before exploring the gardens. A few days afterwards, a couple attended the federation’s Summer Lunch, where they enjoyed a delicious lunch, and were entertained by speaker Ann Widdecombe, who had everyone laughing most of the time.
The NDP will allow those, who live, work and have a business in the area to have a say on, a) The most appropriate places for new homes, shops, offices, leisure facilities and other developments to be located, b) What type of development is needed and what it should look like, c) Which important green spaces and other important areas should be protected, d) What improvements or additions to local facilities and services will be required alongside any development. The success of the plan will rely on ongoing input and support from local residents, businesses, landowners and other organisations active within the parish. Opportunities will be provided for ALL members of the community to engage in and inform the production of the plan. As part of the consultation and engagement process, Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council will be holding some public drop-in events in the near future in both villages where people will be able to meet members of the working party, find out what the Plan is all about, learn how they can get involved and start to identify some of the key issues for Thurcaston & Cropston. The Parish Council would request for people with skills and enthusiasm to volunteer and support NDP events and consultations. Please contact Parish Clerk on 0116 2367626 if you can help. Please also visit our website http://thurcastonand cropston.leicestershireparishcouncils.org/ Follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

Our Members Meeting on 14th July, was our Annual Strawberry Cream Tea which was a resounding success with 30 members, family and friends attending. This year it was held at the “Blue Bell Inn” in Rothley. Recently refurbished, the Inn was attractively appointed and the Tea room was comfortably arranged for our benefit. On arrival we were supplied with either Tea or Coffee which was most welcome as the weather was beautifully hot – a real July Summer’s day. We were then more than generously plied with large scones, strawberry jam, copious amounts of Clotted Cream (so thick you could stand your spoon up in it!) and then came the strawberries, large and delicious. We then held a well supplied Raffle to the delight of all concerned. We owe a great debt of gratitude to our Deputy Leader, Sue Wakerley, for organising the occasion and also our thanks go to the more than helpful and diligent staff of the “Blue Bell Inn” Restaurant..
Ann Farndon.

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. Latest Update on Anstey Development. After saying last month all seemed to be quiet on the housing development front, I have to report my disbelief when seeing a potential proposal for the Nook area in Anstey. This to mitigate the highway capacity issues that already exist within the centre of the village and beyond. I understand this potential proposal is to support the planning application P/2013/2340/02 which is on land off of Cropston Road, Anstey. I am grateful to all residents who have registered their opposition to this latest proposal which would see, in my view, the complete devastation of the Nook area, by having two mini roundabouts instead of the current one. I have already stated that this proposal will have serious consequences for the village of Anstey and beyond, especially retail business outlets, bus users and pedestrians. I have for some time been working to improve parking facilities within the centre of Anstey. This proposal will reduce parking including disabled parking which I managed to increase bays for people with disabilities around the Nook. In my view, I see this as just putting development before the wellbeing of the community and in this case will destroy the very fabric of village life. I am involved in meetings with officers to fully understand the latest proposals and I am sure this will be raised as a big concern at the public meeting with our MP Stephen Dorrell on the 1st of August. I note the view of the Highway Authority "that the Nook roundabout junction currently exhibits unacceptable levels of queuing and delay and the proposed development is likely to exacerbate the situation". It is my view that the latest proposal to physically alter the Nook will not overcome this ever increasing highway issue and will also have a detrimental effect on village life, which is already under siege from piecemeal development and is now in the hundreds of new dwellings without the overarching infrastructure that is needed. I have just had information from Charnwood Borough Council that the other development on Gynsill Lane Anstey will be determined at the July Planning Committee. I have again objected to this proposal especially on safety and highway grounds. Events to Remember World War 1. Firstly may I remind residents about the event taking place in the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey on Saturday and Sunday 3rd August
between 10am and 4.00pm. The Royal British Legion, Anstey Branch have organised an event, The History of World War 1, which will also remember by name the fallen of the village. I do hope local residents will support this event. We Will Remember Them. A major family event is being held in Loughborough to mark the centenary of World War 1 and to remember the 478 local heroes who died for their country. Charnwood Borough Council has organised the "We Remember" event in Queens Park between 3.00pm and 6.00pm on August 9th to commemorate the start of the Great War. This event is just the start of the Council's commemorations over the next four years and the hope is people will find this educational, interesting and interactive. Charnwood Sports Awards. I am pleased to report that the Annual Charnwood Sports Awards are now open for nominations. I am always keen to see local sporting heroes who deserve recognition for their amazing achievements and contributions to sport being nominated. The sixth Annual Awards aim to celebrate the success of people who make a difference in sport and physical activity in Charnwood. The event is run by Charnwood Borough Council which last year saw an astonishing number of great athletes, coaches, volunteers and projects, hopefully we will see even more coming forward this year. This year's glittering awards ceremony will take place on Monday 1st December at Holywell Park, Loughborough University. The deadline for nominations is 5.00pm on Friday September 19th. Please get your nominations in if you know someone who has excelled in all areas, gone above and beyond for their sport and shows exceptional dedication. Categories this year include junior awards, senior awards, disabled sports person of the year, team of the year and volunteer of the year. For a full list and nomination form please visit www. charnwood.gov.uk/pages/sportsawards or if you require more information about the awards please get in touch with Kathryn Leslie or Will Blanche on 01509 634966 Communities Strategy. The County Council has ceased to support the Community Forums in their current form. The decision was taken in the context of the launch of a consultation on the County
Council's new Community Strategy. The Leicestershire Community Strategy sets out the way in which Leicestershire County Council proposes to work with communities in the coming months and years. The financial challenges facing the Council mean that budgets to provide support to all communities in the County are being reduced at a time when these communities are being asked to deal with the practical impacts of a range of funding reductions and service withdrawals in their local area. The Council therefore proposes to focus the resources still available to it on helping communities to support individuals and families who are most in need and enabling community groups to provide services for their communities, including services that the County Council can no longer afford to provide. The Council have identified eight "building blocks" - the things that need to be in place for communities to be strong and resilient, proposing changes to ensure that the support the Council provide helps to deliver the following two priorities: Helping communities to support vulnerable people: Helping communities to design and deliver services. To achieve that, the Council needs to ensure they enable and support the voluntary sector in Leicestershire to develop its potential further which is why the third priority is: Effective commissioning of, and support for the voluntary sector. The County Council are consulting with the public on this proposal until 1st September 2014. Feedback from the consultation will inform the final version of the strategy and help to develop a delivery plan. Please have your say on the proposal by visiting www.leics.gov.uk/communities_strategy If you need to contact me on any issue write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester LE6 0HH e-mail david.snartt@leics.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804

POLICEMATTERS
Crime Figures 19th June 2014 to 20th July 2014 Burglary Dwelling – 0
Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 19 June and 20 July 2014 inclusive. The figures thankfully show a healthy decrease in overall crime, in line with the current national picture, but it is still a time to remain vigilant and look after your property and be alert within your community. During our patrols in this current ‘heatwave’ we are all enjoying, we have noticed a number of houses with ground floor windows wide open. On calling at these properties, a number of residents have actually been out leaving easy access to the burglar. You may come home to a nice cool house ~ but at what cost! If you are going out, leave top opener windows open if you need to but ensure the ground floor of your property is fully secure. Don’t give the burglar an easy ride. Some residents may find a Police crime prevention leaflet dropped through the open window to give them a gentle reminder to keep secure. Operation Tiger – Force Wide – Update. Many of you will be aware through media reports and information that the Leicestershire force has been carrying out a number of planned force-wide operations targeting those that cause most harm across the communities we serve. The Force has made a further 28 arrests as part of the fifth phase of Operation Tiger, bringing the total arrests to almost 650. These arrests were for a range of offences as a result of enforcement activity; including burglary, drugs, theft, criminal damage and possession of indecent images. A considerable number of warrants were executed and properties entered, resulting in large quantities of stolen property recovered and cash and drugs seized. There were also daily targeted patrols across the city and county. This included
visiting local second hand shops to inform staff of the National Mobile Property Register, which allows officers to search for items which may have been stolen. Superintendent Adam Streets said: “The impact of Operation Tiger is still being felt across the communities we serve. We continue to target those causing most harm and that is reflected in the arrests we have made”. “Those that still involve themselves in criminal activity should heed our warnings; continue to break the law and you will be caught.” Finally, my colleague PC 1841 Stu Parker has taken up a new post as Sergeant at Loughborough, so I am pleased to announce that we have been joined by PC 3109 Georgie Lockton as the new Beacon officer for the Anstey Safer Neighbourhoods Team. I am sure she will get a great welcome to the community, and if anybody would like to speak with PC Lockton she can be contacted by calling 101 and when asked to leave a message for an officer (option 2), key in her collar number 3109.

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club The summer activities of the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club continued in July with a ‘members and guest’ event. This was a ‘garden trail’ in Cropston. The first garden was a fabulous plants woman’s garden with deep herbaceous beds, mature trees, both native and Mediterranean, giving height and shade to the planting. There were delightful focal points where artefacts were reflected in the surrounding colours, and a magnificent fountain. Gardening Club members and guests spent about an hour admiring this garden. The second garden, also in full bloom, had the most spectacular display of roses and a Koi pond. It was packed full of wonderful
plants for us all to enjoy. As well as the lovely garden there was also excellent food, drink, and warm hospitality. A number of members prepared food, and the garden owners provided an excellent BBQ and drinks. This was the third year this event had been held and this year it attracted over 50 members and guests. A great way to celebrate the long summer evenings; admiring local gardens, while socialising and relaxing. Cheers everyone….. see you at the show! The Club committee wish to thank all those who contributed to the event. For more information of any of the events AND an excellent summer events leaflet, call Dave Haddon on (0116) 235 9758

Wildflower grants available for green spaces Community groups and landowners are being invited to take advantage of a summer grants scheme to encourage people to create wildflower meadows. Each applicant can apply for up to £250 worth of seeds, bulbs and plugs to use in parks, open spaces and countryside areas under the Plugs for Bugs scheme. Andy Jackson, Project Manager at the county council based Stepping Stones project which is offering the funding, said: “Wildflowers can really brighten up your local community and improve the quality of green spaces for people and wildlife. “Wildflowers and long grasses are important as they provide much needed habitats for insects and butterflies. “Community groups and farmers as well as parish and town councils in the Stepping Stones project area can apply to the scheme. Unfortunately the grants are not available to be used for people’s gardens but we hope that people will be inspired to replicate the wildflower meadows and beds they see at home.” For more information and an application pack call: 0116 305 7221 or 7264. David Walliams calls on people to support Rainbows Hospice in its World Record attempt Comedian and author David Walliams wants people to help create the world’s biggest rainbow for the East Midlands’ only children’s hospice by adding a splash of colour. Mr Walliams, who is a patron of Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, wants people to celebrate the charity’s 20th birthday milestone by helping to smash a world record. To get involved, people can share a bright photo selfie online or write a birthday message on a special coloured postcard. The selfies and postcards will then be laid together to create the giant rainbow, which will be displayed later in the year at a venue in the East Midlands. The charity hopes to break the record for the world’s biggest postcard mosaic, which currently measures 453.37 m² and was created by students from The Camford International School in India.
a patron. So come on, get involved and help them create the biggest rainbow ever made up of selfies and postcards; it’s a fabulous way to celebrate 20 years of caring for children and young people. Let’s do something amazing for Rainbows.” People will be able to add their bit to the World’s Biggest Rainbow as it tours the East Midlands as part of a special roadshow and people will be able to take photos and write messages on birthday cards at those locations. Geoff Ellis, Rainbows chief executive, added: “This year we are celebrating 20 years of care
and we want to make as much noise as possible about it. We hope that by creating the world’s biggest rainbow, we will raise a lot of awareness about who we are and the work we do. We haven’t decided where we will reveal the rainbow yet as we just don’t know how big it is going to get. To join in, share a bright photo of yourself using backgrounds or accessories matching one of our special rainbow colours – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple or pink. Then, using the hashtag #RainbowsSelfie, post it onto Twitter or Facebook and nominate your friends. Or visit www.rainbows.co.uk/ birthdayrainbow to order coloured postcards.
Kicking off the World’s Biggest Rainbow campaign today, David Walliams said: “I’m very excited to be launching this fantastic appeal for Rainbows. The hospice is such an incredible place and the staff do a fantastic job making a happy environment filled with love and laughter. I am very passionate about the work the charity does and I’m proud to be

IN ANSTEY
SPORT
Football clubs working together Two of Anstey’s longest established football clubs have formed an alliance to aid community sport development in the village. Anstey Nomads which was formed in 1947 and Anstey Swifts which has been running for over 26 years both recognise the benefits of this for the future of the clubs which includes improving facilities and increasing participation in football and other sports. The two clubs are working with Anstey Parish Council which is developing the Mitchell’s field which is alongside the Nomad’s ground on Cropston Road into a new community sports field. This will be used by the Swifts for mini-soccer matches and training as well as having the potential for use by other groups. Grant funding is being applied for to redevelopment the changing room and clubhouse facilities within the Nomads ground to bring them up to modern day standards which will also enable them to be used for other sporting purposes including fitness classes and local wellbeing groups. “We are very excited about the prospects this could
bring to our football development and the wider community. We hope to discuss the development with other local sport clubs in the near future” said Ian Grogan from Anstey Nomads.
Joint events held by the clubs which include a recent community day, FA cup camp, and last year’s fireworks event are examples of the widespread benefit the clubs bring locally. It is planned to organise further events in the coming months which will be advertised locally. The greatest opportunities are for the players of the club who can join Anstey Swifts from the age of 4 and can continue to play locally right through until veteran age. Players join at all ages and the clubs aim to have teams to accommodate all levels. Girls football has grown in popularity and is now played from aged 5 to 13 with more joining each season. It is hoped that the club can be one of a handful to provide women’s football in the future. Both clubs promote development and inclusion in all teams and hope to establish a supported inclusive team in the future. Local sports clubs or groups interested in discussing the project should contact Ian Grogan on 07720615421 or email SportAnstey@hotmail.com
Focus on Anstey SWIFTS Anstey Swifts is an FA charter standard junior football club that prides itself on promoting football development and providing the opportunity for all players to take part in matches. This has seen many successes in the past including the recent signing of Callum Cockerill-Mollett for Walsall FC (See June edition). The Swifts have been successful in winning the Leicestershire County Cup and league on several occasions at various age groups, most recently in 2013 with the under 14’s. They now also have a girls football teams which play league football and an academy group for young players aged from 4. Home matches are played at various locations in the village including Stadon Road, The Martin High and at the rear of the Nomads. New players are welcome to join at any time in the season but are particularly sought from school years 5 to 9 (age 10 to 14). For further information please contact Valarie Hayes on 0116 236 5322

Sponsorship opportunities available Sponsorship packages available – all money raised will go direct to our great cause – to raise vital money to fund clinical trials providing treatments for boys living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Quick update on charity progress Firstly, Alex continues to do really well, he’s incredibly active and doing exceptionally well, although we are starting to see subtle changes in his physical ability… but for now we are keeping him healthy with daily physiotherapy, night splints, a whole range of anti-oxidants and of course not forgetting daily doses steroids… but unless new
treatments come along this abilities will continue to decline. We have invested in several clinical trials and progress is being made on many fronts… there is still much work to do and working with the Duchenne Alliance we really are making a huge difference. All the money we raise help fund vital new treatments and we have now taken the ultimate ‘Race against time’ challenge to help fight for this generation of boys… for the first time ever the science is looking hopeful. Since we launched our charity at the 2012 golf day that September, we have raised £120k and we continue our fundraising efforts with many events planned in the up and coming months. "They made that sacrifice in the belief that they were opposing tyranny and however some historians view the events of WWI we, their successors, have a sacred duty to honour their memory." Councillor Stephen Hampson, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said: “Nearly 500 local heroes were killed in the conflict and it is important that we never forget their sacrifice. “Our We Remember event is just the start of our commemorations in Charnwood over the next four years and we hope people will find it educational, interesting and interactive.” Details for the event are still being finalised which the Council will release soon.

AUGUST IN THE GARDEN August is the month to enjoy the fruits of your labours. There should be an abundance of fruit and vegetables. Tomatoes, salad crops, peas, beans, potatoes etc. Lift and dry onions, shallots and garlic this month. Continue to dig potatoes. Pinch out the tips of tomato plants, aim for about 5 to 6 trusses per plant. Continue feeding and watering and of course keeping an eye out for pests and diseases. Harvest beans and courgettes regularly before they get too big. Top fruit such as peaches, nectarines and apricots should be ready too. Trim back herbs to encourage fresh tender growth. Check greenhouse crops daily and keep watered, ventilated and shaded. Tidy up any dead and decaying matter to discourage disease. Discontinue feeding the lawn and raise the blades on the mower in readiness for autumn. Growth will be slowing down towards the end of the month. Re-cut the lawn’s edges to neaten it up. Give hedges a final trim. Continue to aerate compost regularly by turning it. Keep Camellias and Rhododendrons well watered during August. This will encourage next year’s buds to develop. Continue to water and feed hanging baskets and containers, dead head as necessary. Stake tall herbaceous plants such as Dahlias. Prune roses and other summer flowering shrubs after they have finished flowering. Continue to spray pernicious weeds such as ground elder and bind weed with a glyphosate based weedkiller.

Towards the end of August new stocks of spring flowering bulbs become available. Hyacinths for Christmas flowering should be started off now. We keep ours outside covered with a thick layer of straw and then bring them into the warm greenhouse mid November to green up.
We print leaflets, businesss cards, brochures, receipt pads, invoice books, posters, banners and much more.

Newtown Linford Gardening Club
Our club has just celebrated reaching a membership of over 80 with three new members at our last meeting. Over the last two years our membership has doubled and we have become a more vibrant and healthy group as a result. We are sure that this has been achieved as a result of the work of our programme compilers Carolyn Lowe and Pam McMorran who have greatly raised the profile of our speakers by inviting people who have national recognition in their fields. As a result we are listening to speakers who have a high level of knowledge and an enthusiasm to match. For example in June we heard a talk on cyclamens delivered by Vic Aspland who is the secretary of the National Cyclamen Society and who has travelled the world seeking new varieties in the wild and developing them to enable us to plant them in our gardens. We have many more such speakers booked in the future. The Summer months are spent out of doors. In July we hold our traditional Summer Garden Party at Mountain Ash, the home of Mike and Liz Newconbe. Some readers will have visited this splendid garden recently when it was opened for the National Garden Scheme. In August we go to RHS Harlow Carr near Harrogate. This is a lovely garden and well worth a day’s visit. The highlight of our year is the visit of award-winning gardener Adam Frost on November 4th. His profile is increasing sharply; he appeared regularly on the TV coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show and has had several TV appearances on other programmes since then. It is not common for celebrities to come to Newtown Linford, so we look forward to the occasion. Some of you will remember the visit of Christine Walkden last October and we expect a similarly interesting evening. We will be delighted to welcome visitors to this event and if you would like to come, tickets for the evening (£10) can be obtained from the club secretary. We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. If you are interested in our activities just contact the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk.net) , or come to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you.

Anstey Parish Council At the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council held in May Councillor Martin Broomhead was elected as Chairman and Councillor Deborah Taylor Vice Chairman for the coming year. This is the last year of the present Council with the next elections being held in May 2015. Anstey Library - You may have read that as part of its budget cuts Leicestershire County Council are planning to close a number of community libraries, and it seems unless a volunteer group comes forward the Anstey Library in Stadon Rd will be closed, to be replaced by the occasional mobile library service. The Parish Council are keen to support any groups interested in taking on the Library. If you are interested in preserving the library, or particularly if you would like to help set up a volunteer group or even to work as a library volunteer, then please come along to a meeting which will be held in Jubilee Hall at 7:00pm on Monday 11th August. The Anstey Royal British Legion exhibition on the History of World War I at the Jubilee Hall on the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd of August to commemorate the start of the War. The Parish Council have taken the opportunity to remember those from Anstey who lost their lives in the WWI. The naming of the new roads on the new Groby Road Davidsons development were chosen at random from names on the War Memorial. The primary school children of the village have all received a book mark from the Parish Council to commemorate this event. The Anstey Gala date is set for the 6th September and we look forward to this village event made possible by the hard work of Mandy Jordan and the Gala Committee who make this event possible each year. The Gala Committee may be contacted via email: at ansteygala@aol.co.uk Concerns have been raised regarding the grounds maintenance at Long Close development and the play area there. This land is owned by the developers Wilsons and although we are happy to pass on your concerns about this land the parish council is not responsible for the maintenance of the area. The next film show at the Jubilee Hall will be ‘The Book Thief’ on Wednesday 3rd September 2014 starting at 7pm. Tickets are on sale from the Parish Office at £4.00 each.

FILMREVIEW Inbetweeners 2 Neil, Will and Simon receive an invite from Jay to join him in Australia whilst on his gap year, who promises them it’s ‘’the sex capital of the world’’. With their lives now rather dull compared to their hedonistic school days and legendary lads holiday, it’s an offer they can’t refuse. Once again, they put growing up temporarily on-hold, and embark on a backpacking holiday of a lifetime in an awful car, inspired by Peter Andre’s ‘Mysterious Girl’. Will soon finds himself battling with the lads to do something cultural, whilst they focus their attention on drinking, girls, and annoying fellow travellers. The Inbetweeners quickly gained cult status in the UK, and when the first film became the highest grossing UK comedy of all time, demand for a sequel was too great to ignore. Writers Damon Beesley and Iain Morris have kept specific plot details under wraps, however they promise it’s going to feature ‘’kangaroos and Australians and possibly koalas’’.
The Nut Job Surly the purple squirrel and his best mate Buddy, a sewer rat, are far from popular, considered outcasts by their peers for stealing. The hair brained pair formulate a plot to rob the local nut store in order to survive – little do they know that the store is a front for some human bank robbers... Featuring a nutty bunch of loveable animals, The Nut Job delivers laughs at break neck speed with an all-star cast of voice talent, including Will Arnett, Liam Neeson and Katherine Heigl. .

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Well, what a month! Disaster at the football World Cup, England cricket not much better, Mark Cavendish falling at the first stage of the Tour de France and Andy Murray once again on a one man expedition at Wimbledon (just where is ALL the British tennis talent?). But the big disappointment for Anstey is yet more housing development, this time 57 dwellings on Gynsill Lane in the field just before Gynsill Court (on land that we all know floods on a regular basis), along with up to 40 within the Gynsill Court grounds. Not only will there be the usual delays in and around The Nook, but more traffic along Gynsill Lane and around Glenfield Turns (County Hall roundabout). The big 2 applications to come soon are both off Cropston Road, Anstey and, if passed, will make the traffic at busy times even worse than it is now. One of the suggestions is to make 2 small islands in The Nook! This to me beggars belief and will ruin the village centre as a shopping centre. I understand both developments will be on the next planning agenda at Charnwood, which is Thursday 14th August 2014 at 5.00pm. Please try to be there or at least write in and make your feelings known. Mark Smith is the officer dealing with these 2 contentious issues at Charnwood Borough Council Planning. Also, our MP the Rt Hon Stephen Dorrell will be present at a public meeting at the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey on August 1st 2014 at 7.00pm, which I am hoping will help the Save Anstey campaign. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend as I will still be in my 100 day quarantine since by bone marrow transplant on May 8th. However, you have my wholehearted support against these and any other developments. I wonder if the officers really understand how bad the congestion is
in the village at busy times. The Nook was fine in 1868 but nowhere near able to cope with today's traffic. I often wonder whose bright idea it was to close Gorse Hill to traffic when the A46 bypass was built... Bit Miffed I've been a Ward Councillor for Anstey since 1999 and all of a sudden the village doesn't seem to be within Charnwood Borough anymore; well, not according to a recent edition of the Loughborough Echo. 38 conservations areas are within the Borough, starting with Birstall and Cropston, ending with Woodhouse Eaves and Wymeswold; but Anstey's Bradgate Road and parts of Cropston Road get no mention whatsoever. Come on Loughborough Echo, you do sell your newspaper in the village so recognition where it's due please. The conservation project has been 9 years in the making, to leave out Anstey is a major omission. Loughborough by the Sea yes, the Marketplace in Loughborough will once again be transformed into a beach scene. “Roll Up, Roll Up!” for some traditional seaside entertainment. The event runs from 3rd to 6th August and will be officially opened by the Lord Mayor Cllr Paul Day at 11.00am on Sunday 3rd August. Most council owned parking will be free of charge. If you need more information then please ring Charnwood Borough Council Market and Fairs Office on 01509 634624. Dan Greaves is Back! Yes, Anstey's own 'Discus Dan' Greaves, already a medal winner at the 4th Paralympic Games and holder of World and European discus titles, now wants to add Commonwealth Games gold to his

collection. Still only 31, he recently achieved a personal best of 60.12m in the F44 category and claimed a new British record. This season so far has been very consistent, with him throwing over 60m regularly in training. As well as the Commonwealth title in his sights, Dan also hopes to compete and bring home a medal from the European Games in Swansea later in the season. He has 3 European titles already and is ranked as number 1 in the European ratings. We all wish him well. Loughborough Mela Festival The 15th annual Mela will be held in Loughborough Marketplace on Sunday 17th August, starting at 10.00am. There will be stage performers of various musical styles, beginning at Noon until 5.00pm. The free family event also features stalls, fairground rides, children's activities, a diverse range of food and lots more. Sounds like a fun day for all and once again, free parking at most council car parks. Anstey Motor Company Closure I was sorry to hear that Anstey Motor Company, which had been on Cropston Road for a number of years before moving to Thurcaston, has had to close down. Proprietor Mel Thorpe is still working in the industry and can be contacted if you are looking for a change of car. And finally...don't forget, if you have any problems, you can get in touch by the usual channels...

The Martin High School...
This has been a wonderful year for the MHS. We are realising what we set out to achieve our 11-16 school.
Our 772 students have been magnificent; your support as parents and community, absolutely essential. We are on track to achieve what we set out to do; the best learning and the best results for all of our students. A big thank you to everyone for your support. What has been achieved this year? • We have grown to a school of 772 11-15 students • We have retained the intimate support of the old High School and combined it with the highly academic work of the GCSE
We have strongly challenged the Local Authority new transport policy. We do not believe that its implementation is in the interests of our students. In the long term, the new policy will directly threaten transport from Glenfield to the Martin High School.
We are looking at how we will provide for this transport to continue beyond September 2015. We will have a plan for this by next September. Sue Worthington - Head of Music Sue retired at the end of the Summer Term. Sue is an outstanding professional. She has taught at the school for 14 years. Much loved by her students, she is known for the care, encouragement and determination she brings to learning.
• We have kept the learner at our heart. Every child matters at the MHS
Year 11 Post-16 Options Evening Parents of Year 10 pupils may wish to put Thursday 2nd October into their diaries. This is when the school will hold its Post-16 Options Event for Year 11 pupils and their parents. All the key providers of Further Education in Leicester and the surrounding area will have a stall where parents and pupils will be able to put questions directly to staff from colleges and some employers about courses and employment opportunities offered by these organisations. More information will follow in the autumn term. Mr D Mitchell - Careers Co-ordinator
• Our Year 10 have led the school magnificently
Our first year at the Martin High School by Megan Wiltshire, 7N and Sian Stone, 7A
• They have worked extremely hard and they are on track for achieving highly
When we started at the Martin High School we thought it was very friendly and welcoming. The school is being developed and improved at the moment. This has helped us because we do not have to move from different classrooms all the time.
• We have had stunning success, particularly in sports with our teams regularly achieving highly within Leicestershire and nationally • We have developed two new buildings with 20 new classrooms The students and staff have tolerated living on a developing building site. They have enjoyed watching their new school emerge around them. This is a most exciting time. We look forward to our first GCSE results next year.
Sue’s achievements were highlighted at the last summer concert with the wealth of talent and music ability that her students demonstrated. We wish Sue the best for her future. Retirement, considering her energy, is an inappropriate term for what comes next.
There are lots of new staff being employed which will ensure that all the pupils get an equal opportunity. The Student Council has met with us and we have suggested new and improved ideas for our school such as new clubs we would like to start up. We feel very welcome at the MHS.
Over this last term we had:• A stunning concert evening with musicians, dancers and actors performing their best. • A sports day where students broke many of the long-standing records of the school • Lots of extra activities to excite and challenge our students

New Guiders Wanted
With all the new developments taking place in Anstey we are, as always, desperate for new Guiders and helpers in the movement. We have girls on the waiting list and cannot take them in because we do not have enough places available. The ideal situation would be for us to open up another Rainbow unit and Brownie unit. For this we desperately need committed volunteers to come forward. If you are a female aged 18 to 65 then you qualify to become a Leader. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do everyone has something to offer, we already have Guiders and helpers from every walk of life, so please don! t think you will not be welcome, as you will be, so come along and give the girls a chance. We would also like more helpers in the Guide section. If you would like fun and friendship and feel you can help us out, which I hope you can, then please get in touch. Carol Charnley, 1st Anstey Guides. 0116 2351621
ATC VISITS WARNING ZONE Anstey Town Charity has a proud record of supporting local groups and organisations, over 30 in the last ten years.
and risks can be difficult for parents to discuss with their children and for teachers to tackle in the confines of the classroom.
In recent years the charity has funded year 6 pupils from both of the village primary schools in attending the Warning Zone in Leicester. Warning Zone is a charity which believes in ‘Education by Experience’ and provides exciting activities in a quality, high impact programme designed to help pupils in their learning for life.
According to the Child Accident Prevention Trust each year in England and Wales around 300 children under 15 die from accidental injury. 120,000 need extensive treatment for injuries and approximately 10,000 suffer a permanent disability. Warning Zone works to educate children to the dangers at home and the wider community.
An end of term outing by Woolden Hill pupils to the Frog Island site saw them accompanied by Parish Councillor Mrs Vicky Ball , vice chairwoman of the charity and ATC secretary Ken Schofield who observed the children experiencing a variety of activities.
Danger and Pitfalls.
Volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring that the children experience Warning Zone to its full potential. To find out more about volunteering please contact The Centre Co-ordinator on 0116 262 9739 or www.warningzone.org.uk
It was obvious that the children enthusiastically enjoyed the core programme of 8 set piece scenarios incorporating realistic settings, interactive equipment and special effects. Everything was ‘hands on’, visual and experiential. The children were placed in credible life like situations requiring decisions to be made and consequences discussed.
Issues facing young people. Issues such as alcohol, abuse, drugs, peer pressure
