Merry Christmas To Everyone

As we remember all the service personnel who gave their lives for us in past World Wars and current conflicts, Scouts and Explorers from the 77th Leicester (Bradgate) joined together with the Anstey branch of the Royal British Legion to raise money for the poppy appeal by selling poppies in Beaumont Shopping Centre. The Scouts and Explorers were there all day having gained special permission from the shopping centre to sell the poppies, and with huge success! Each Scout and Explorer who helped had a huge smile on their face and were proud of what they were achieving, with one Scout saying “I don’t mind giving my Saturday up, the soldiers gave their lives for me it’s the least I can do to say thank you." Graham Braum, Chairman of the Anstey branch of the Royal British Legion, was very impressed by all hard work and effort the young people were putting in.

Our last Meeting for the year 2014, was a huge success in so far as our Speaker was Mr. Mike Leonard and his subject was “An Irreverent Approach to Political Correctness”. For nearly one hour Mike speedily took us through a vast number of quotations and expressions (quite a few of which we were totally unaware existed)! Mike had collected Quotations from Newspapers covering the past year. When undertaking speaking to Clubs etc., he kept fastidiously to current News which from our point of view, was truly amazing considering the amount of data he had amassed in such a short time.

On a daily basis we were all guilty of expressions we had grown up with over the years and thought nothing of any possible “incorrectness or offence” that could have been misconstrued.

The absurdity of many Quotations gave rise to immense incredulity from the audience to the point that we felt there was no hope for many of us to change our ways, One might become

more aware of trying not to hurt anyone’s’ feelings, but as to minding one’s “Ps and Qs” in all situations only thought up by the “Powers that be” -well, that would be another matter!!. The interaction from the audience and the laughter that ensued, not to mention the many contributions, added up to a very happy Meeting, concluding with our customary cups of tea and biscuits. Our next Meeting will be on JANUARY MONDAY 12th at 2.15 pm, when we hope to see old and NEW Members. Please give us a chance to welcome you in the New Year, to a very warm and friendly Club. Any information required please ring 0116 2363467. In the meantime may I wish all Readers a very Blessed and Festive Christmas, followed by a very Healthy, Happy New Year.

This will affect our fundraising considerably, and we need to provide for things like insurance, so we making a £10 charge for a Christmas stall this year. Christmas tree competition entry is free!

POLICEMATTERS

Crime Figures 20th Oct 2014 to 19th Nov 2014

Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 20 October and 19 November 2014 inclusive.

Can You Help? We start with an appeal for information about a theft of person that took place at about 6.30pm on Sunday November 9th 2014 as the victim was walking through the recreation ground on Stadon Rd between the “Half-pipe” and the Tennis courts. The victim was approached by a group of people who pushed him to the ground and took his Iphone 4 and a small amount of cash. The suspects were seen running off in the direction of the Library and Caters Close area. We would like to speak to anybody who may have witnessed the incident, or saw the group of suspects acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the incident. If you can help then please contact the officer in charge of the investigation – Detective Constable 1311 Patrick Cleall – by calling Police on 101 and leaving a message on option 2 by keying in his collar number 1311.

Caught in the act! The old adage that ‘being in the right place at the right time’ is what policing is all about could not have been truer for a prolific shoplifter who decided to pay Anstey a visit recently. This offender decided to take a trip across the other side of the county as she was ‘well known’ elsewhere and thought the Anstey Co-op may be an easy touch. Having committed 2 large thefts from the store during the week, investigations were conducted and good CCTV footage was viewed and recovered. On the following Sunday myself and PC Lockton were on foot patrol around the area of the Co-op when the female suspect was spotted heading towards the store with 3 large empty bags! A stop check quickly confirmed this to be our prolific shoplifter, and due to her previous record she was remanded to court where she received a 16 week sentence. Hopefully, this excellent result will send a clear message that Anstey is not an ‘easy touch’ for shoplifters. Many thanks must also go to the Co-op management team and staff for their assistance in the investigation.

Christmas is Coming!! It’s that time again when ‘Scrooge’ (the criminal) may be looking to upset your Christmas! We would like to re-iterate the excellent advice that has been published in the Anstey Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators article this month. Taking these common sense steps will hopefully ensure that you have a safe and crime free Christmas. On behalf of the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing team we would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and to thank you for all your support in 2014. Please remain vigilant in 2015 and we hope, as our community expands, the community spirit also continues to grow in tandem with our excellent Neighbourhood Watch schemes.

Newtown Linford Choral Society

Thurcaston Defibrillator Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council have installed a defibrillator in the Parish for victims of sudden cardiac arrest (heart attacks). Where is it? The unit is owned and managed by Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council and is publicly accessible 24 hours a day and is situated outside the Memorial Hall by the Parish Office on Anstey Lane, Thurcaston. Discussions are taking place regarding possibility of installing a Defibrillator in Cropston.

The Choral Society is excited about its next winter concert, which is to be held in Ratby Church at 7.30pm, Friday, 30th January and Saturday, 31st January, 2015. The concert will feature two contrasting pieces of music by the well known contemporary composer, John Rutter, both of which were premiered at Carnegie Hall, New York. The first is “Mass of the Children,” which as well as the Choral Society will also feature a Youth Choir. The second is a collection of Spirituals entitled “Feel The Spirit”.

The Choir will be accompanied by an orchestra, and Sarah Stephens will be the guest soprano soloist and baritone Clive Hilton. Tickets are priced at £10, (£5 for children, under 10 free!) and will be available at the beginning of December from Ratby Post Office, Newtown Linford Village Stores, Peter Sayer 01530 243822, and any member of the Choir. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace

the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer

requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not

just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. Update on Planning. I am disappointed and very unhappy that we were unable to stop the Fairhaven planning application from going ahead. In spite of all the effort put in by the Save Anstey Group the planning committee at Charnwood Borough Council agreed on the 17th November to permit this development by seven votes to five against. I need to take this opportunity to thank all residents who sent their objections to the Council and the support at the planning meeting. In spite of the excellent speeches by Debs Taylor, Vice Chairman of the Anstey Parish Council and Gareth Williams representing residents, I find it hard to believe this application was permitted, in my view local opinion and knowledge count very little when deciding planning applications. I was particularly critical of the changes to The Nook, it was recognised by Charnwood officers that losing short time parking spaces would for some businesses amount to many customers being displaced during the working day. It seems to me that development goes ahead in spite of the damage it may cause to the local business community. We will now have to see how this develops over the coming months, therefore I will continue trying to make sure there is the least disruption to the local community whilst this development is in progress. This proposal does not include the double mini-roundabout in The Nook as in the last application, but the central island will be changed, I also understand that the developer will contribute all the money to maintain the new island. In my view, the 17th November was a sad day for not only the village of Anstey, but, because of the extra traffic, this will have an impact for residents in other local communities. This, in my view, has demonstrated that we are getting these piecemeal developments approved without the infrastructure to go with the amount of housing Anstey has seen over the past few years. I attended an Anstey Parish Council meeting when many residents from Bradgate Road were objecting to a proposal to build two dwellings close to bungalows. I did send my objections about this proposal, I now understand this application has been refused. Remembrance Sunday 9th November. On the Sunday morning I attended the Annual Remembrance Service at the Memorial, Anstey. I was pleased to see so many residents coming together to remember all those who have lost their lives during conflicts over many years. I believe it was especially poignant as it is the centenary year of the start of the First World War. It was particularly pleasing to see

8

so many young people attending the service. My thanks to the British Legion members, especially John Dowling for all the work they do to make sure we never forget the sacrifices made. We will remember them. In the evening I was invited by Geoffrey Gibson MBE to the Annual Service held at Hunters Green, Thurcaston. This service was specially arranged for Remembrance Sunday and was a shortened version of that used over many years at Quorn Parish Church. It was good to meet the residents and friends of Hunters Green whilst attending this special service which was conducted by the Revd. David McDonough. During the service the poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae was read out, this again reflecting the time of the First World War and the loss of life. New Bus Service Between Anstey and Leicester. I was not happy with the proposals for bus stops to accommodate the new bus service which will run between the new development on Groby Road, St James Gate, Beaumont Leys and Leicester. I understand the service was agreed as part of the developer contributions when the new houses were approved. I am grateful to the Anstey Parish Council in helping to get a better outcome to the original proposal. I understand that residents near the new proposed bus stops will be consulted. I have asked, now that extra buses will be travelling along Hollow Road and Stadon Road, these roads are added to the winter gritting programme. I am told this will happen. I was delighted to see the new bus shelter installed on Link Road. I am sure this will be of great benefit for many local residents who catch the bus from this stop, especially through the winter months and when it is raining. This was made possible through a scheme jointly funded by the Parish Council and the County Council. Don't Muck Around Awards, The Don't Muck Around Awards are named after Charnwood Borough Council's award winning environment campaign. It is this time of the year when awards are handed out to recognise people or groups who have made a positive impact on the environment within the Borough of Charnwood. The award ceremony will be held at the end of November. The shortlist includes a range of different projects and people from across the Borough including couples, charities, individuals and students who have worked to ensure Charnwood is protected for future generations. The awards are designed to recognise the contribution of everyone who helps to make a difference, no matter how big

or small a project. I am delighted to say I have three shortlisted projects within my Division. Katie, Emma and Imogen joined the Woodhouse/Woodhouse Eaves litter picking team which consists of six volunteers who go out every week clearing litter from roadside verges, paths and bridleways within and around the two villages. The Junior Allotment Group was set up by a local resident last year. She took over half an allotment in Woodhouse Eaves and got the local youngsters building raised beds with help from friends in which they planted vegetables and fruit. Thurcaston and Cropston litter picking group originated about three years ago with two volunteers and quickly expanded to a group of eight. The volunteers go out on a regular basis, collecting litter from roadsides and pathways in and around the two villages. I wish all three groups success at the awards ceremony, hopefully I will have some good news to report next time. Final Reminders About Registering to Vote. Further to information in my previous report, I understand around 10,000 people across the Charnwood Borough still need to provide information to ensure they keep their right to vote as part of the biggest electoral shake-up in 100 years. Charnwood Borough Council is sending out final reminders to those people urging them to confirm their details or risk losing their right to a postal vote in next year's parliamentary election. Individual electoral registration came into force in June and requires each member of a household to register to vote. Previously, one person was able to register everyone in their household. For the first time, people have been able to register on-line by providing a national insurance number and date of birth. The Council will be hand delivering third and final reminders to people and they would strongly urge them to take notice of the information sent to them and act upon it. For more information please visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/yourvotematters, e-mail electoral.services@charnwood.gov.uk or call the Council on 01509 634546. Woodhouse Eaves Post Office. I have been contacted by several residents about the proposed re-location of the Woodhouse Eaves Post Office. Therefore I thought I would try and find out the current

t: 0800 6446 150 • e: yourlocal@openboxpromotions.co.uk • w: www.openboxpromotions.co.uk

situation from Post Office Limited. I have received a reply which states "we are at the very early stages of the recruitment process and at this time no decision has been made as to the re-location of Woodhouse Eaves Post Office. Following recruitment we will commence a period of public consultation and we would welcome your comments at that time". Rate Your Local Police. I have received this information from the Chief Constable, Simon Cole about the launch of a new on-line public feedback tool, "Rate Your Local Police". This enables people to log-on and provide feedback to any interaction they've had with the Police, based on a five star rating, similar to TripAdvisor. There is also an option for the public to provide additional comments and information. The system has been created to enhance public confidence in policing, helping to identify any areas for improvement and provide another way for people to get in touch. It also allows the force to easily respond to feedback. Since the launch the Home Secretary, Theresa May has praised Leicestershire Police for its' outstanding work in creating this tool. Great local derby win over Birtsall after loss v Ashby for Anstey Rugby Club Back on 25th October Ashby came over to play a league game with us with a mixed 2nd and 3rd team and the prospect of a harder game than we were expecting. Playing uphill against a big side Anstey struggled to get any real foothold in the game. Ashby played well and at halftime the visitors led 26-0. Changes were made at interval and Anstey began the second half pushing forward until Phil Pepper was able to pick up and drive over the line to score. The conversion hit the post but at last Anstey were on the scoreboard 5-26. A further score by Kane Garner got Anstey up to 12 points, but in the end Ashby were the victors scoring 47 points. On a very bright but blustery early November day Anstey welcomed Birstall to Link Road for a meeting of the top two sides in our league. Birstall looked young and fit and were eager to prove that their win over Belgrave the previous week was no fluke. The first to score for Anstey was captain Matt Belcher, followed soon after by a second converted try, next it was the turn of veteran Dave Bucknor, then Andrew Pollock, so into half

time 26 point to nil. Onto second half with Matt Belcher scoring his hat trick, then a fourth from the captain. Andrew Pollock got the next two tries, sealing a healthy 50-7 win for your village club. Supporters are always welcome at our home (and away) matches. Just pop up to Link Road, walk round the right hand side of Martin High School to find our pitch or go to the end of Holgate Close for access to the bottom corner. Home matches coming soon are Long Eaton on 6th December and Sileby on on 13th December. Away matches are at Old Newts on 29th November and Ripley Rhinos on 20th December. As well as supporters, New Players always welcome, just contact Matt Belcher on Ian Pollock on 07570 598 513 The Clubhouse is upstairs at the Coach & Horses and the ground is the playing field behind Anstey Martin School on Link Road.

Joggers, be seen, be aware How often do you see joggers running down country lanes with their backs to the traffic and listening to their I pods? Totally unaware of what is behind them. The nights are drawing in yet how many of them do you see in dark clothing, making it difficult for motorists to see them in the dark. So joggers while keeping fit, keep safe and run facing the traffic and wear something bright or luminescent.

Football Remembers Saturday 13th December

The Nomads and Swifts are to commemorate the centenary of one of the most iconic moments of the First World of remembrance in December 2014. War - the 1914 Christmas Truce – as part of a week activity

The Nomads home match on 13th December will be accompanied by mini matches and mascots from the Swifts. kicking off at 3pm. The day will start from 12pm with the main match 'Football Remembers Week' will take place from 5-14 December. A joint collaboration between The FA, the Premier the aim is to engage football fans and players at every level League, the Football League and the British Council, about what took place on Christmas Day one hundred years ago on the battlefields in Belgium.

On 25 December 1914, soldiers from both sides put down their weapons and crossed into ‘no man’s land’ to share in an impromptu ceasefire. First-hand accounts from the time include references to football being played and photographs taken. All photographs on the day will be automatically uploaded to a special website – www.footballremembers.com. The site shall act as a moment of record of football in 2014, a century on from the First World War, and will be preserved for future generations. HRH The Duke of Cambridge, President of The FA, said: “It promises to be a powerful way to engage and educate young people about such an important moment in our history. We all grew up with the story of soldiers from both sides putting down their arms on Christmas Day, and it remains wholly relevant today as a message of hope over adversity, even in the bleakest of times.” Please show your support for this poignant campaign by attending our commemorative match.

Swifts U12’s in fine form!

After a solid introductory season to 9v9 football at under have started this season 11’s last season, the lads matching a real desire to do well with some excellent football. This has seen the lads win an impressive 9 from the opening 11 games in all competitions drawing one and suffering just one defeat which came in a than ourselves.
competitive and hard fought 3-0 loss in the county cup to a team 3 divisions higher This includes a fantastic run of 6 wins from 6 games in the league (at time of writing).
With another 4 league games to come before the lads break for Christmas (weather permitting) and a league cup campaign to resume in March the 12’s are looking good going into the second half of the season, this in a season which they can be proud of already.

A fine stat of 59 goals scored thus far (33 of which have been in the league) spearheaded by this season’s current top scorer and team captain Harry Burton (who has 26) is demonstrating the quality all over the team not only to score that many goals but to also create that many chances. A solid defensive effort every week is accompanying the attack which is highlighting a real team effort.

by Reece Preston-Hayes It’s been a pretty good month down the Nomads. November started with a bang after our fireworks event went so well. The first team have gelled together and are starting to show a lot of positivity, the striking force has been in full form and there’ll be no goal drought in the coming games.

Newtown Linford Gardening Club A packed village hall heard a very interesting talk from Chelsea Gold Medal garden designer Adam Frost earlier this month. He told us how he got involved in gardening; how his career developed through landscaping and design and about his project with Homebase to provide scholarships for young people to become skilled in horticulture. He then gave us an insight into the way his award-winning 2014 garden design went from drawing- board to fruition and we were able to realise the enormous amount of effort and cost involved in creating a garden which would be on show for only six days. We are grateful for the support of local businesses in providing prizes for the raffle – to The Bradgate Inn, Cook’s Farm Shop, The Grey Lady Kitchen and Deli, The Post Office Tea Room, Elegance in Glass, Loughborough Road Nurseries, Quorn and Hollybeck Nurseries in Southwell. All that remains in the programme this year is the Christmas Party on December 2nd which is again hosted at the home of our Vice-Chair Sue Pritchard. We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. If you are interested in our activities just contact the secretary (tel. 242452 or e-mail 01530242452@talktalk.net), or come to one of our meetings to see how you like it before making a commitment (£2 for visitors). Alternatively give us a ring and ask for a copy of our programme for the coming year and we will be pleased to send one to you.

How does your waist compare to your height? If you want a quick way of determining whether you should lose weight or not, simply measure your waist, and compare it with your height. The secret to a long life is having your waistline no larger than half of your height. A recent study by Cass Business School at City University, London, based on two decades of medical research, said that a waist to height ratio of 80 per cent or more could reduce your life expectancy by up to 20 years.

Thank You Geoff and Lynn Snee would like to thank all who bought tickets, raffle tickets and gave prizes for our charity night we had on 19th Sept at the Groby ex-Servicemens Club in aid of Loros and Wishes 4 Kids. Also a big thank you to Laura Elson, Funktion Junction and Rude Angel for their great performances. Also Rendall Munroe for drawing the raffle. The grand total from the night was £840 shared equally between the two charities.

Thurcaston & Cropston Neighbourhood Plan Working Party Engages with Key Stakeholders As part of the process to produce a Neighbourhood Plan for Thurcaston and Cropston Parish, the RCC (Leicestershire & Rutland) is now preparing for a Consultation meeting with key stakeholders. This will include inviting representatives such as local landowners, local businesses, local community and sports groups, neighbouring parish councils and those that provide infrastructure services to the parish such as transportation, highways and utilities. The stakeholder meeting will •

Raise awareness of the Thurcaston & Cropston Neighbourhood Plan among key stakeholders

Identify opportunities and constraints related to the future development and delivery of services, facilities and infrastructure within the parish, such as traffic and transport or possible areas for housing, commercial developments or community facilities

Identify and explore key issues that the Neighbourhood Plan will need to consider

Help to inform the ongoing consultation and engagement process required to produce the plan

This Stakeholder Consultation follows two public drop-in consultation events that were held in both Cropston and Thurcaston in September, which resulted in some very useful feedback and also helped to recruit additional local residents who will now join one of a number of themed groups, starting in the New Year, which will cover 'Heritage and Conservation', 'Open Spaces & Environment', 'Housing', 'Recreation, Facilities & Services', 'Traffic & Transport' and 'Business & Economy'. Anyone wanting to find out more about the Neighbourhood Development Plan or who would like to be a part of the themed groups, please contact the Parish Clerk, Marianne Lane on 0116 2367626

LOROS Christmas CD Hi there, I am writing to you as Chair of Christchurch Theatre Club in the hope that you can help us promote a fund raiser for Loros please? We lost our choreographer Ruby (Ruth Chadwick)to the dreaded cancer last year when sadly she lost her battle and spent her last few days in Loros. As you probably already know Loros and all of the staff are truly brilliant, they need all the help and support that we can give them. So we have made a Christmas CD, professionally recorded and all proceeds will go directly to Loros. We, Christchurch, are performing White Christmas at the Loughborough Town Hall in January 2015 and wanted to donate as much money to Loros in Ruth’s memory we have raffle tickets with some amazing prizes to be won and we obviously are launching the CD and hoping to raise 100’s of pounds in honour of this fantastic lady. Loros are also selling the CD in their shops and you can also download online, anything you or we can do to help promote the CD and support the charity would be greatly appreciated, please see the attached flyer for more information.

Film Presentations From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council

How little did we know, until watching "Monuments Men" in November, how many priceless painting and sculpture masterpieces had been stolen by the Nazis, from occupied countries. Claire, played by Cate Blanchett, had risked her life by meticulously recording the secret destination of each theft. The Monuments Men, being architects and artists, showed bravery and determination in retrieving world heritage masterpieces.

"About Time"

Run by the village gala committee.

will be shown on Friday December 12th and lasts 124 minutes.

Come and get into the festive spirit on

Directed by RIchard Curtis, this wonderful British comedy drama stars Bill Nighy and Domhnall Gleeson who features in "Anna Karenina". Tim discovers that he has a new gift which enables him to travel in time. With this special ability, Tim tries to change his past in order to improve his future. Do these unusual plans succeed? He has an eccentric family and friends who all help to give this film both warmth and humour.

It gained five nominations for Golden Globe Awards, was nominated for six Academy Awards and competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival.

The day will be topped off by carol singing with the Ratby Junior Band in the Nook and the turning on of the Nook Christmas tree lights. Come and celebrate with the rest of the village and remember to visit every location so you don't miss out!

M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello every one, Christmas will soon be with us, the time to start looking out for Easter eggs in the shops! Anstey will have its Christmas lights again but alas not as colourful as in the past due to cuts, however we will be having the now traditional Christmas Gala and the tree in the centre of the Nook.

so all is not lost. 7/5 was the same vote in favour as the previous application across the road. So we do have some members’ support, but just not enough. We mustn’t give in.

On a sporting front it is hoped Leicester City will win another game before the New Year begins? The county cricket club have a new regime, which hopefully will bring better fortunes to a club that has not won a league game for 2 years! Anstey Nomads have produced a run a decent form and are slowly creeping away from the relegation area, whilst the local cricket club, Anstey & Glenfield C.C. won runners-up trophies at the league presentation evening at the Athena in Leicester. Special guests were TMS cricket commentator Jonathan Agnew and Anstey snooker legend (and slightly talented cricketer!) Willie Thorne. His late brother Malcolm was much better.

Because of the density of traffic at busy times in the Nook area of Anstey. I have asked Charnwood borough council environment department to carry out a survey around this area. They will be setting up the air quality scheme in the early part of 2015.

Disappointment but not despair! Once again in their infinite wisdom, (7 to 5 in favour) the Borough plans committee at CBC came down in favour of officer recommendation and passed outline planning permission for up to 165 dwellings at the Fairhaven Farm, off Cropston Road Anstey. This was despite opposition from your local County Councillor, Borough Councillor, and Anstey Parish Council, plus many residents and the “Save Anstey” campaign. This is the 2nd time in 3 months that a planning committee has come down in favour of building more houses along Cropston Road. Disappointment for all “Ansteyonians” and Thucaston and Cropston maybe, but not despair. They were only for outline planning

Air quality

Mitchells Field, Anstey Things are progressing, hopefully in the right direction. 2015 will be a big and hopefully successful year. Things are gradually falling into place. It’s taking a long time but patience has been a virtue. There is a significant amount of money available at Charnwood Borough council to go towards the project. I don’t have a key to the lock but I am keeping a watchful eye on things.

Lights out. Reminder. In these long dark nights! If you have a street light out in your street that is NOT due out until the midnight curfew please contact County Hall, County Highways 0116 3050001. All stanchions have a number on. All you have to do is quote the number and the street it’s on. Usually it’s re-lit within 3 days. If it isn’t please give me a ring, and I will see what I can do.

Christmas Messages? May I take this opportunity to wish everyone throughout the villages a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas and a new year that brings you much joy and laughter. Special wishes and good health to all the people in Anstey and surrounds who like me have had to visit the Leicester Royal Infirmary at regular intervals for consultations/ treatment etc. over the last year or so. It must be, well I know it is an ordeal at times but like me, keep thinking positive thoughts. Trust in him up there and the expertise with the LRI Doctors and Nurses. And don’t forget there is an election in May 2015 and I aim to be there! Love to you ALL from

The Martin High School... Each group had to develop a great business idea, work on costings, overheads and estimate profits. Overall the students reported how much they enjoyed the whole process, working in teams and developing a project that benefitted others.

The Big Challenge Seven months to go until our first Year 11 take their GCSE examinations. We have converted to 11-16 to make sure that all our students can achieve their potential. All is looking well. Fingers crossed for next June.

It is so important to learn how to be generous of spirit, mind and skill. These students are a great credit to their families.

Developing the learning habit

The new library

School is much more than passing exams. We encourage every student to learn in four ways: in the classroom; through participating in clubs, activities and interests (we have over 72 different extra-curricular activities); employing what you learn in the school community (through community activities and fund-raising) and using what you learn at school, at home or in the wider community.

The foundations have been laid for the new library. The building will arrive mid-November and be completed for 1st December. The 200 square metre library will include an extensive range of teenage fiction; learning resources complementing all the school courses/curriculum, two meeting rooms and a study area.

Sports Hall

The students are told to use what they learn: use it or lose it. That is the way that we steadily absorb what we learn so that learning becomes our main habit.

We are currently Charnwood Sporting Champions for 2013-2014 because our students have out-performed other schools. PE at the MHS is exciting, matched to students’ needs and encourages all to find health and performance through sport, yet we remain one of only a few Leicestershire Secondary schools to not have a sports hall!

Jeans for Genes Day at the MHS was on 18th October. Students learned about the importance of research into genetic disorder and the fantastic work of this charity. They also had fun raising £809.78

Olympian gold medallist, Dan Greaves has joined the campaign to secure the MHS sports hall. Dan was a student at the school where he first threw his discus! All being well, we will hear from the Minister about our success. However, we may need your help in persuading her. Write to you about this in the December issue.

Coming up in December Years 7, 8 and 9 - Disco/party on Friday 5th December. School Concert: a modern version of the Christmas Story on Wednesday 10th December. Christmas Fair on Friday 19th December, 9.30 – 11.00 am. The big Xmas appeal is our main fundraising event. All our students will be involved in fundraising, designing stalls for the fair. All members of the community are welcome to attend. This year we are fundraising for Jade’s Retreat: a holiday home for families who have a teenager with terminal cancer and LOROS, our local respite and hospice charity.

We are mid campaign. The signs are encouraging. The new Education Minister, MP for Education, Nicky Morgan is MP for Loughborough and knows about the changes afoot in Leicestershire. Talks are underway. The great news is that the

Year 8 students with big hearts Year 8 recently made mini businesses that raised £410 for charitable causes.

Do come along and enjoy. Doors open at 9.30 am.

Halloween: Dining with a difference Friday 31st October, MHS students enjoyed a ghoulish dinner served by Macbeth’s witches. The pictures say it all: fun all around.

Happy Everyone Christmas

December is all about preparation, renovation, oh, and Christmas! Plant up the winter tubs with heathers, ivies and spring bedding. Underplant with dwarf daffs and tulips for a bit of extra interest. Prune deciduous trees and shrubs and plant evergreens and conifers. Winter prune Wisteria to 2-3 buds on the summer growth. Move container grown shrubs into a sheltered spot to protect them from the worst of the weather. Group them together for more protection. Don’t forget to raise them off the ground to help prevent waterlogging – no one likes a soggy bottom. December is a good time to prepare perennial vegetable beds ready for asparagus and rhubarb. Divide clumps of rhubarb if needed. Put some manure on the vegetable plot so it can rot down. I’m a big believer if letting the worms do the work for you but if you need the exercise after your Christmas indulgences then dig it in, otherwise leave it on the top and then incorporate it in the spring. Stake top heavy Brussels and cover these and other brassicas with netting to prevent

pigeon damage. Remove fruit cage netting from the tops of fruit cages to prevent sagging and possible breaking if we have an early snow fall. Apply glue bands or greasebands to the trunks of fruit trees to prevent the winter moths from climbing up and laying their eggs in the branches.

any dead leaves and debris from all round the garden and compost them. Try not to walk on frozen lawns as it damages the grass. Wash, dry and store used plant pots to avoid weed seed and disease. Clean tools, tidy up canes, clean out water butts, insulate taps and pipes and pack hosepipes away.

Replace damaged glass in greenhouses and clean thoroughly with a horticultural disinfectant or, if the greenhouse is empty, with a sulphur candle. Insulate the greenhouse with bubble wrap (large bubble) if you intend using it through the winter. This helps to insulate it. Remember to be very careful with the water this time of year and ventilate whenever possible.

Keep bird feeders stocked up and if you are having a bonfire please check for small mammals, eg hedgehogs, which might be sheltering in it.

Consider aerating your lawn and clear

Have a fabulous Christmas and a Happy New Year.

DECEMBERS NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW Keeping your home safe and secure this Christmas Follow the tips below to keep your home safe and secure this Christmas. • Whilst shopping, never leave the gifts you have just bought in your vehicle without first checking to see if it’s safe to do so. You never know who is watching your vehicle in a car park.

• Don’t go in or call out – the intruder could still be inside. • Go to a neighbour’s to call the Police. Don’t touch anything or tidy up. After Christmas • Make use of the free and secure registration websites to register items of value such as I.T., mobile phones, cycles, electrical items such as TV’s, games consoles, etc: www.immobilise.com

• Don’t leave presents in your vehicle overnight. If you need to hide them from your children ask a relative or neighbour to keep them for you.

• Dispose of present packaging carefully as empty boxes left outside can advertise that you have new and desirable goods inside your home.

• Lock up sheds and garages so thieves cannot gain access to ladders and tools which they could use to gain access to your home.

Have a very happy and safe Christmas

• Don’t leave them in an unsecured garage or shed. Fit a good garage/shed alarm. I have some padlock alarms/internal shed alarms for sale at £10.

We will be attending this year’s Christmas Gala on Saturday 6th December. You will find us in St Mary’s Church Rooms selling various security devices.

• Don’t leave presents under the tree, particularly if visible from windows or doors.

If you are interested in being a member or a coordinator please come and visit our table - you won’t know what is involved if you don’t ask. The majority of Anstey is now covered with a NHW scheme near you, so if you haven’t already joined now is your chance.

• When you go out at night, consider leaving the lights on with curtains drawn so it looks like someone is home. • Never leave your Christmas tree lights on when you go out or go to bed. • Ensure that all doors and windows are locked - use a dead- or double-lock on outside doors • Never leave keys anywhere near the front door; burglars know where to look. • If you do arrive home and notice signs of a break-in:

CHRISTMAS GALA

We have a few schemes which were registered, but unfortunately the coordinator covering these schemes has resigned or left Anstey. So if you want to still claim the benefits of being in a scheme, please consider taken on the coordinator’s role. This is not time consuming, all the hard work has already been done, and your NHW street signs are in place. If you’re not sure if your street is in a scheme, or you would like to

know the name of your coordinator, then please come and have a chat. Audrey Preston the NHW Coordinator for Kitchener Road, has recently resigned, so if anyone living on Kitchener Road would like to take over from Audrey please get in touch. I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to her for getting her scheme up and running and for looking after her members for us, and wish her all the best for the future.

JAMES STREET AREA I am pleased to say that the roads in the area of James Street have got coordinators and you will soon be invited to your welcome meeting to get your schemes registered and to receive your NHW scheme number to enable you to get a discount on your house insurance, depending on who your insurer is. I would like to finish by wishing all the Anstey NHW coordinators a very Happy Christmas and New Year, and thank them for all their help and support in 2014. Also thanks to PC Georgina Lockton and PCSO Phil Wright for their help and support to Anstey NHW. If you would like to contact me for any reason, my details are: Phone no 0116 2365745 or email diane@ansteynhw.co.uk
