Autumn Fun with Thurcaston Brownies We began the term with prizes from the village show for our yogurt pot people and Mexican Eye weaving. Next came a visit from one of our past Girl Guides who has been accepted for a trip to Peru with Leicestershire Girl Guiding. Thank you to Amy for entertaining the Brownies with stories of Peru. We have had more visitors while working for the Jobs badge. We learned about working in retail and pretended to sell burgers and fries. ‘Remember to be polite to the customers and don’t be late for work.’ Carol told us that to work as a nurse we would need patience, calmness and the ability to listen. With help, we tried out blood pressure monitors, as well as inspecting equipment needed to visit patients in their homes. Primary school teaching assistant Rachel, soon engaged the girls in discussion of the strategies needed to cope with children of different abilities and finished the session colouring in tricky patterns as a soothing way to calm down. Ruth and Rachel from the RSPCA’s Woodside Animal Centre (and Lottie the dog) talked about working with animals and the girls dressed in apron, gloves and plastic protective shoe covers, These would be worn to clean out one cat pod, disposed of and new ones worn for the next cat pod thus preventing cross contamination. The Brownies wanted to know what happened to all the pooh ‘It goes down the Wishing Well’, a deep hole in the ground and the workers WISHED they did not have to lift the lid and let out the pong. Brownies bought little gifts from the RSPCA ladies and the following week handed in bags of saleable items for the RSPCA shop. Next came working in the beauty industry and we watched Helen have her Halloween make up applied by Molly while the Brownies learned facts about makeup and college qualifications. I have never seen so many different colours of enamel that Molly had brought for the girls to paint their nails.

DELIVERY DATE:

Luckily the rain held off when we had our bonfire party with fireworks, sparklers, hot dogs, singing and, when the bonfire (eventually) was burning, we toasted marsh mallows. Thanks to Sally and Philip for the fireworks.

DEADLINE DATE:

Several brave Brownies read a lesson, or laid a poppy wreath or carried the Brownie flag at the Remembrance Service at All Saints Church, Thurcaston.

We will finish the term with a talk about working as a dental nurse, making Christmas crafts, visiting the panto in Loughborough and, finally, celebrating with a party. We have welcomed several new Brownies this term but have a few remaining spaces. Girls need to be 7 years old. Please enquire, (but not during working hours) to Louise Keran, (Brown Owl) 07711 422350 We meet on Wednesday evenings 6pm to 7.15pm in the Harrison Room, All Saints church, Anstey Lane, Thurcaston. Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club

Anglesey Abbey were wonderful examples of how plants, shrubs and trees can be used to great effect in the cold and dark winter months. How colourful branches, bare of leaves can give an elegant structure to large sweeping spaces or to small intimate corners. Although 100 red and yellow Cornus bushes can make a great display in a park estate or stately house garden, just a few can also have great impact in our own more modest garden spaces.

pruned that evening before setting out. With lots to talk about, he passed pieces of twigs, branches, blossoms, seeds and berries around the room for all to sniff, touch and examine. He gave spontaneous demonstrations of taking hard wood cuttings and many members left with berries, seeds or a piece of hard wood tucked into pockets and bags, with instructions of how to sow or take root.

The Winter Garden by Joe Whitehead Joe Whitehead; the current head gardener of Burghley House, comes from a long line of gardeners, being the third generation of head gardeners in his family. His wide experience of three previous head gardener positions was well in evidence on a cold November evening for the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club. Joe, with ‘The Winter Garden’ as his topic for the evening, had a fascinating collection of slides to show us; all demonstrating how winter is a season with its own treats and sights to admire. It’s not, he told us, just a time to curl up in front of the fire with a cuppa and the seed catalogues.

Witch hazel, another scented plant for the winter garden

This was a lively and entertaining evening. Joe was a fascinating speaker with a great sense of humour and had a great connection with his most appreciative audience. Report from Anstey Parish Council Coppice Work -

Further improvements have been made to a small area of trees on Link Road Playing Field. This work has been undertaken by the Conservation Volunteers. The work has greatly improved the area that had become very overgrown, a lot of the trees and shrubs have been cut back and a dead hedge created to allow for wildlife to flourish.

We would still like to hear your view, this is a great opportunity to shape the future of Anstey to make sure the things that are important to you are included within the plan such as; • When there is further development in Anstey where do you think that should be? • What extra facilities are required to support a larger population? • Are further community facilities required? • Environment and Green Space concerns • Community transport and highway concerns addressed • Future local employment

Local Plan -

Charnwood Borough Council are working on their local plan, this will see an increase in housing requirements across the whole of the Charnwood area. This is the principle planning document for the area and the neighbourhood plan that the parish council will be working on must be compliant with this document. If you would like to find out more about the local plan this can be found on their consultation page at; https://www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/draft_ charnwood_local_plan_2019_36 The parish council will be putting forward their comments to this new plan at their meeting on the 10th December 2019. This is a public meets starting at 7.30pm at the Jubilee Hall please feel free to come along.

If you have expertise, enthusiasm and an interest in shaping the future of Anstey your contributions will be very welcome. Initially we are wanting to hear what people like or dislike about Anstey. Do forward your views to email: clerk@ansteypc.org telephone: (0116) 236 2646.

Christmas Lights - A reminder to you that this year the Parish Council is launching its Christmas lights competition. You do not need to enter to take part. Nominated Councillors will be going around the village during week commencing the 9th December and making decisions on households that provide the best Christmas Lights display. There will be cash prizes in time for Christmas for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. We will write to you if your household is to receive one of these prizes.

David Snartt Reports...

I will keep you informed if and when more information becomes available.

Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate

Planning Appeal Decision At last we have a decision about the proposed development to erect two semidetached dwellings on land at the former Bradgate Nursing Home, Brand Hill, Woodhouse Eaves. This planning application was taken to appeal by the applicants because of the refusal of Charnwood Borough Council to grant planning permission. The Inspector dismissed the appeal giving the main issues as to whether the proposal would preserve or enhance the character or appearance of the Woodhouse Eaves Conservation Area and the effect of the development on biodiversity. Included in the appeal decision the Inspector stated: I must attach considerable importance and weight to the desirability of preserving the character and appearance of the Conservation Area. I find therefore, that the modest and limited public benefits identified do not outweigh the less than substantial harm that would result from the proposal. Therefore, I conclude on this issue that the proposal would not preserve or enhance the setting of the Conservation Area. You also may recall that in the previous planning application for the eight dwellings on Lady Martin Drive, there was a commitment through a legal agreement to purchase two affordable dwellings within the village or an affordable housing contribution paid in lieu of providing the affordable dwellings. In light of the appeal being dismissed, I have now written to officers at Charnwood Borough Council asking how this commitment can be achieved. I have also asked about replacement trees which, it seems, have been removed from this part of the site.

New Planning Application For some time now I have been asked what is happening to the Lady Jane Mobile Home Park on Bradgate Road, Newtown Linford. Charnwood Borough Council have now

Remembrance Sunday received a planning application with a proposal to erect seven bungalows and a replacement dwelling at 532 Bradgate Road.

I attended the Service of Remembrance at Welbeck – Defence 6th Form College on Sunday 10th November. This service took the form of a drumhead service, which is a religious service conducted in the field during armed conflict, often near the battlefront.

I will be asking for more information about certain areas of this proposal before deciding if this application should be determined by a Plans Committee. The details of the proposed demolition of the bungalow at 532 Bradgate Road can be viewed under application P/19/2229/2 on the Charnwood Borough Council website and the bungalows and replacement dwelling under P/19/2119/2.

Lacking a church to attend, the military command used its drums, piled neatly and draped with appropriate colours to create an altar.

120 Bus Service Further to the information already supplied about the 120 bus service, which is the only bus service serving Newtown Linford, I have now received further information from the County Council. In this reply it was stated: Suggestions provided at all the engagement events have been noted, including suggestions for publicising Bradgate Park. We are considering ways in which access to Bradgate Park can be made more apparent within the timetable and the description for the new service. At the engagement events, many suggestions were made regarding the timetable and requests for slight amendments were also made. Suggestions and requests were noted and tweaks will be made to the timetable accordingly where possible. With regard to delaying implementation of the new service, the council currently spends ÂŁ2.4 million on passenger transport services, but does have to save over ÂŁ400,000. The target of completing the review of 34 supported local bus services before the end of 2019 has proved challenging, but we are still aiming to complete the review as soon as possible in the new financial year. Delaying the implementation of this revised service would lead to further delays in delivering the required

One poignant moment, during the Act of Remembrance, the Padre, The Revd Fr Paschal Hanrahan read out the names of former Welbexians who have died in the service of our country. I believe these moments within the service demonstrate the sacrifices that the members of our armed forces make on our behalf. It was good to see so many family members, who had travelled a good distance to be at the service, supporting their young people at the college. It is times like these, on this day, I feel so sad that Welbeck College is to close during 2021. I am still in correspondence with the Government Minister about the closure and the future of this excellent site.

Keeping Safe and Secure I have received reports recently about nuisance calls to residents properties in the local area. I thought I would remind people of a few simple measures which can help to reduce crime. These calls can sometimes be intimidating especially for elderly people living on their own. These measures include: Don’t answer the door to strangers, be wary of bogus callers who try and trick their way in to your home by pretending to be a meter reader, police officer, council official or an ordinary person needing help, this could include asking for money. You can ask the person to come back another time when someone you trust will be with you. If you are worried about a doorstop caller, dial 999 and ask for the Police. Only let someone in to your home if you are expecting them or they’re a

I made reference last month to Charnwood Borough Council launching a consultation on the Draft Local Plan which will guide growth and development until 2036. The Draft Plan sets out how the Council will balance future growth in the area while making sure the environment is looked after and communities have the infrastructure they need. The consultation runs until 16th December 2019, residents, Parish Councils, businesses, other agencies and communities in general including schools and GP surgeries are being urged to have their say. The Draft Local Plan includes: Land for around 7,250 additional new homes up until 2036, including around 1,600 around the Leicester urban edge which includes Syston, Thurmaston, Birstall, Hamilton edge/south of A46 near Anstey: 800 homes at other locations in the Borough (this would include my Ward area): Commitments for securing affordable housing for all new developments of 10 homes or more.

More information is available on the Council website www.charnwood.gov.uk/draftlocalplan. I would be grateful if residents would take a look at the proposals within this plan. The decisions taken will affect the way we develop our local area throughout the plan period and beyond. In my view, the decisions taken need to benefit communities, the environment and to make sure we have the correct infrastructure in place to overcome the issues connected with new development.

Award for Work with Stray Dogs Charnwood Borough Council have been recognised by the RSPCA for its outstanding work with dogs. The PawPrints Awards has three levels bronze, silver and gold. GRANTS FOR LOCAL CAUSES Anstey Town Charity trustees will be holding their annual grants meeting in April next year to distribute funds to local charities and groups Applicants must be based in the village or serve the community of Anstey. These include non profit organisations, voluntary groups, youth organisations, sports clubs, faith and community groups. The Charity also has the discretion to award grants to individuals who may require support for educational or special needs projects. The Trustees require an independently up to date verified or audited statement of accounts. It is also helpful if applicants can indicate what activity, age group, equipment or project the grant is needed for and an approximate costing. They are also interested to know how many Anstey residents will benefit from the grants and are required to include a contact name and address and telephone number with their applications. In 2019 £3,960 was awarded to ten local groups and organisations. During the last 10 years the Charity has awarded over £30,000 to over 30 local applicants. Applications should be sent by the 31st of January 2020 to Anstey Town Charity, Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey LE7 7AY. For further details ring Vicky Ball 2125315 We Need Your Help. The charity, under the terms of its scheme laid down by the Charity Commission, cannot invest any of its income, this must be given to the community of Anstey. However, Anstey Town Charity is able to invest grants and donations with the Charities Investment Fund. With increasing demands for financial support the nine unpaid Trustees are anxious to attract this kind of funding from local bodies and individuals, perhaps in memory of a loved one or in appreciation of the work done by the Charity on behalf the village. They are very grateful for the support they receive from the Anstey Parish Council and the Gala Committee but hope that groups who have benefitted from their grants may feel able to make donations to Anstey Town Charity to enhance their work in the local community.

ANSTEY WI Anstey WI held their annual meeting in November. 2019 has been a very successful year, both in terms of enjoyable and educational activities, and of fundraising. Ordinary members and those on the committee were thanked for all the hard work which made it possible. Special thanks were given to Sheila Price, who stepped down after three years as president.

Charnwood Voices

Charnwood Voices invite you to join them for a musical celebration of Christmas on Saturday 21st December at Frederick Street United Reform Church in Loughborough LE11 3BH.

An exciting programme has been prepared for next year, and there was some anxiety that it would be difficult to appoint new officers for next year, but volunteers stepped up to the plate, and we will enter 2020 with Anne Spanswick as our new president, and an enlarged committee. We look forward to welcoming new members too. Trophies were awarded to Liz Heggs for gaining most points in the monthly competitions, Heather Savage for flower arranging, Sheryl Bramcey for craft, and Ann Coney for baking. The photographs show Sheryl and Ann receiving their trophies from Sheila Price. 'Joyful & Triumphant' conducted by Nicholas Scott-Burt will feature some new music composed by choir member Jack Arthur Shaw and Harry Scott-Burt.

Our meeting on December 11th at the Jubilee Hall in Stadon Road at 7.30pm will feature the Cocktail Boys. Why not join us? Please bring a Secret Santa gift to the value of £2.

Finally Anstey Royal British Legion would like to wish all readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

In November's film, we understood Queen Elizabeth 1's dilemma when she was asked to sign the death warrant for her Roman Catholic cousin, Mary Queen of Scots. Nobles in both countries had been plotting against each queen. The acting was superb and the Scottish landscape astonishing. How relieved we were when Queen Mary & Lord Darnley produced a son, who later united the two countries as King James 1. “Bohemian Rhapsody” will be shown on December 13th and lasts 134 minutes. Our December film is a British biographical drama about Queen and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury who defied stereotypes and convention, yet was a deeply private individual. "Bohemian Rhapsody" was directed from a screen play about the most well-loved music group in the world. Having gained four Oscars and won three British Academy Awards, this film will be a joyous celebration leading up to Christmas time. “Red Joan” will be shown on January 10th 2020 and lasts 110 minutes. Our first film for the new year is a fantastic true British story of a "Granny spy" played by Dame Judi Dench. As a civil servant after World War 11, she falls under suspicion by the authorities for being a Soviet spy, possibly because she was associating with a Russian Communist. Will she be able to prevent the ultimate destruction of herself as well as her friend? "Green Book" will be shown on February 14th and lasts 130 minutes. Another amazing true story will be our biographical comedy drama in February. This film brings to light the racial division in American society during the 1960's. When a club bouncer falls on hard times, he becomes the concert tour driver for a talented African-American concert pianist. Having won three Oscars and three BAFTA'S, this film is a warm and joyous tale about loyalty and companionship.

Deborah Taylor & Paul Baines… Borough Councillors for Anstey Latest News Deborah Taylor 6 Geary Close, Anstey, LE7 7LW Email: Cllr.Deborah.Taylor@charnwood.gov.uk Tel: 0116 2350126 - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor Facebook: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor

Member Grants - Just a reminder that the deadline for applications for Member Grants from both of us is 28th February 2020. Each borough councillor has been allocated an annual budget of £1,000 which can be used to support projects that bring benefits to their ward. Cllr Taylor has £500 left to award and Cllr Baines has £750 left to award. Organisations currently running projects with community benefit in Charnwood are invited to apply for a minimum of £250 and up to a maximum of £1,000 per member, and applications may be made to more than one member. Funding can be provided towards community events, activities, equipment, uniformed groups such as Scouts, Guides, Cubs and Brownies. Please get in touch with us to discuss further. If the money is not used it will go back into the pot and Anstey will lose valuable resources. All the details are on the following website: https://www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/ member_grants

Bradgate Road -

Following concerns raised with us about speeding vehicles on Bradgate Road, we requested that the Road Safety Unit at Leicestershire Police carry out a speed check in the area. The survey has now been completed and the device was out between 28th October and 4th November 2019. During this time 11.5% of vehicles were exceeding the National Police Chief Council Enforcement threshold. This represents good compliance with the limit and as such the Road Safety Unit will not be taking any further action at present. We have shared the results with Anstey’s local police beat team and they will continue to carry out regular speed checks in the area and if vehicles speed increase in the area, we can ask for another survey to be carried out in the future.

Public Footpaths J71, J70 and J69 South of Groby Road Following the approval of the planning application for Davidsons on Gynsill Lane, there was also a planning application to improve the footpaths on J71, J70 and J69 which included a new bridge over Rothley Brook. This was to ensure that children had a safe route to walk to school from the new development into Anstey. We have spoken to you before about the delays with the bridge and our last update was that the bridge development would be finished by the end of September. The bridge is now in situ but there is no access either side. Due to the rain and floods all the machinery has been removed from the site. The contractors are now waiting for the weather to improve but if it continues to be very wet, that is not going to happen. We have now raised an enforcement issue with the planning department at Charnwood Borough Council again and asked them to action with the developers. The planning application was very clear that the bridge should be completed before any dwellings were occupied. There are now many dwellings occupied on the site, leaving children with no safe route to walk to school. We have also highlighted the issue to the Leader and Chief Executive of Charnwood so they are aware and we are now waiting for a meeting to be arranged to discuss this issue further.

Stadon Road Parking Bays -

Several residents and businesses have raised concerns about the new marked out timelimited bays on Stadon Road. Having checked with Leicestershire County Council (LCC), we were made aware that the restrictions have been in place for many years but because the bays were not clearly

marked with white lines, they were unenforceable. The white lines have now been re-painted, and enforcement will now apply if you over stay the time limit. For the first two weeks warning letters were sent to 13 drivers who over stayed the time limit and one ticket was issued for a vehicle parked in the bus stop. We have now asked LCC to look at the possibility of there being a residents’ parking scheme, but the issue might change following the Bus Stop Consultation as some of these bays will need to be removed if the bus stop is relocated to Stadon Road.

Girl Power -

Women in Charnwood are being invited to enjoy an afternoon of fun and exercise whilst raising money for charity on Sunday 15th December 2019. Girl Power is organised by the Borough Council’s Active Charnwood team in partnership with TayPlay SPORT and Fusion Lifestyle. The event aims to empower and engage women and girls into sport participation. A 20% donation from ticket sales will be given to local charity ‘Living Without Abuse’. The charity supports women, men and children that have been affected by domestic abuse. The event is for women and girls aged 8 and over and is being held at Loughborough Leisure Centre between 123pm. There will be a range of activity taster sessions to choose from including netball, Boogie Bounce, Bangra Blaze, Glow Beatz and 60 ft inflatables. There will also be stalls available providing information on health and wellbeing, arts and crafts activities and glitter stations. Tickets are £8 per family and includes free t-shirts for everyone taking part. For more information and to buy your tickets visit: https://www.tayplaysport.co.uk/girlpower

CCTV Cameras - CCTV cameras are being deployed in Charnwood as the Borough Council steps up its fight against flytippers. The Council has introduced the cameras in various hot-spots across the area and it comes as the Council launches its annual ‘Don’t Muck Around’ campaign to tackle enviro-crime. The cameras are the latest weapon in the fight against fly-tipping in Charnwood. Enviro-crime officers investigate every incident and fixed penalty notices are issued and a prosecution is made whenever possible. The Council are hoping that the cameras will not only catch some people in the act but also act as a deterrent to would-be fly-tippers. Residents can also play a part in tackling fly-tipping. If you pay someone to dispose of your rubbish then please make sure they are licensed waste carriers because if they are not and your waste is fly-tipped, it could be you who ends up with a fine or in court. In 2018/19 there were 852 fly-tipping incidents in Charnwood compared with 673 in 2017/18 and 603 in 2016/17. In 2017/18, the Council issued 17 fixed penalty notices, each for ÂŁ400, totalling ÂŁ6,800. The council will also take action in court and since 2015, Charnwood has successfully brought 22 prosecutions, with offenders being left with fines and costs plus a criminal record. As well as fly-tipping, the ‘Don’t Muck Around’ campaign will highlight littering issues. There is a particular focus on litter being thrown from vehicles and the Council is supporting a county-wide campaign to raise awareness of the issue. The registered keeper of a vehicle can be issued with a fixed penalty notice for ÂŁ150 for littering, regardless of who threw the litter from the vehicle. Council street wardens have already taken part in some joint enforcement action with other councils in Leicestershire and more is being planned. The Council street warden teams will also be carrying out patrols in areas where there have been complaints about any littering or dog fouling. Please pick it up and bin it. For more information about what can and can’t be recycled or taken to the local tips, visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/recycling We would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Eat, drink and be merry! We would also like to thank ‘Your Local’ for their continued support in allowing us to submit our monthly reports to keep all residents informed and up to date on local issues.

Massive congratulations to Grace Richardson 10M and Amelie Poulton 8I on being given parts in a production of ‘Sweeney Todd’ at the Haymarket Theatre, Leicester. Performances start on Wednesday 20th November through to Saturday 23rd November. It is an awesome show, check out the Haymarket website for more details and tickets, a real must see!

We have also been collecting used/broken plastic bags, parcel bags, compost bags, polypropylene fruit nets with the labels attached. Our Year 9's have been very creative and those stupid apple bags that can't be recycled...oh yes they can! These images are some of the effects we have been playing around with. The really neat new look iPad case is Harvey Lennon's, and the blue one is Will Kyle's, Harvey mentored him for the final stages. The purple one is a first wonky prototype but shows the fruit nets.

Year 7 Graduation Evening As part of the transition process from primary to secondary school, Martin High Year 7 pupils have been completing the APROUDER way. Using the school’s eight key values of attendance, punctuality, respect, organisation, uniform, determination, environment and resilience – Year 7 pupils have had to prove that they can meet each element of these throughout their learning in order to graduate into a full member of the Martin High community and join older students in their houses. The pupils began by taking part in an intense week of APROUDER focused lessons learning skills from how to introduce yourself to tips and time saving advice so that you are not late in the morning. After the initial week, pupils have been putting these values to the test under the watchful eye of their tutors and head of transition. Successful pupils will be invited to attend graduation on Tuesday 17th December, where alongside their fellow graduates and in front of staff and parents they will receive their house colours. Mrs S Coates – Head of Transition

Flying High - In 2020, British Airways will be offering free flying lessons to 200 selected students across the UK. There were over 1000 students who applied, and the winners were picked based on passion and enthusiasm. One of our very own students, Manpreet Digpaul (aged 14), was chosen to receive this once in a lifetime adventure. She said of the experience: "It makes me feel really privileged to experience this at such a young age. I’m just overwhelmed by the opportunity.” Manpreet also said that this is what she would like to pursue as a career, which we think is great! You can find the link to the article written about Manpreet here: https://www.mirror.co.uk/travel/uk-ireland/british-airways-fund-flyinglessons-20706947 Well done!

Deborah Taylor... Latest News County Councillor for Bradgate Division 6 Geary Close, Anstey LE7 7LW - Tel: 0116 2350126 - Email: Deborah.Taylor@leics.gov.uk Facebook: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor

We had a very wet end of October and November with many residents suffering from flooding in their homes in my Division. I am still working on individual cases and working with the County Council, looking at further flood defences that can be put in place to try and prevent any further flooding events. My thoughts go out to all those families that have had their homes damaged by flood water and if anyone is having any ongoing issues that they need support with, please do get in touch. After a week away in the beautiful New Forest for a short break, I attended the re-launch of the Football Premier League Kicks Program at Charnwood College. Leicester City in the Community supports this program which works with young people through sport to engage them in positive activities, which also covers issues that include equality and inclusion, youth violence and knife crime. It was a very wet evening but the young people had a great time and were all happy to meet former Leicester City player, Matt Piper. On Monday 4th November I was at the ‘Pride in Practice’ event at the King Power Stadium. This event was to celebrate all the hard work happening within the Children and Families Department at Leicestershire County Council. It was a fantastic day with some great key note speakers and some excellent examples of good practice we’re shared. On Thursday 7th November we welcomed a visit from Mark Riddell who is a National Adviser for Care Leavers for the Department for Education. This was a return visit to see what improvements the Children and Families Department had made for our Care Leavers. It was a very positive visit and we received excellent feedback on our support for care leavers. As always, there is still work to do but we are working hard to achieve the best outcome we can for our care leavers. On Monday 11th November I attended the Autumn concert performed by Beacon Voices. Beacon Voices is our Children in Care choir. It was a lovely evening and I always enjoy listening to the choir, we have some really talented children in our care. Well done to all our young people who overcame their nerves to perform to a full audience. On Wednesday 13th November I attended the official opening of Loughborough Fair by the Mayor of Charnwood. Luckily it was a dry night! The fair ran for four days and we had a very successful event with very few incidents.

Well done to everyone involved, there is so much hard work that goes on behind the scenes and some very long hours worked to ensure families can have an enjoyable time. On Tuesday 19th November I headed down to Bournemouth to attend the National Children and Adult Social Care Conference. Unfortunately, there had to be a few changes made as no Government Ministers were allowed to attend due to the General Election being called. It was still an excellent conference with plenty of information and learning to enable me to better support families within Leicestershire. November ended with a visit to Loughborough for the Christmas lights switch on. I am now fully in the Christmas spirit and looking forward to the rest of the festive season.

General Election - I am sure everyone is now aware that a general election is being held on Thursday 12th December. I know this is a busy time of the year, but I just wanted to encourage everyone to either complete a postal vote or come out and vote on the day. It is important that you exercise your democratic right to vote. Compost Bins -

Residents have the chance to purchase a cut-price compost bin, in a bid to reduce the amount of food and garden waste sent to landfill. People will now be starting to tidy their gardens in preparation for the winter months and the County Council are encouraging residents to recycle their garden waste at home and make an impact on the environment. Organic waste that is sent to landfill cannot decompose properly because it doesn’t have any access to air and, instead, produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Compostable items include fruit and vegetable peelings, grass cuttings, coffee grounds, newspaper and cardboard which will all decompose in around a year. The resulting compost can then be dug back into the garden to provide nutrient rich food for your plants. Residents can buy a discounted compost bin for £11.50, with a second one offered at half price. The bins are made from 100% recycled plastic and are available in two different sizes and colours. For more details or to order a compost bin, visit www.getcomposting.com

Centre Bus 54A, Anstey -

I have received the official notice from the Traffic Commissioner that Centrebus are changing their 54A service timetable and will no longer

be serving Anstey. This was a commercial service and there was an agreement between Centrebus and Davidsons (who developed the Groby Road site) that Davidsons would pay Centrebus to run the 54A through Anstey for 5 years. Those 5 years are now up and Centrebus have decided that it is not commercially able to continue with the service due to low passenger numbers. I have been in touch with Leicestershire County Council and they are currently accessing the impact for residents of Anstey with the loss of this service. I have highlighted that it will cut off one side of the village and leave residents isolated and unable to access employment and health care. I am waiting for an update but please be reassured I am doing all I can to ensure that we have some sort of transport serving that side of the village.

Ofsted Report - Ofsted inspectors have said Leicestershire County Council has made improvements in many areas of its children’s social care services. In a report published on 4th November, the regulator has set out where considerable progress has been made by the authority since 2017, but outlines that improvements are still needed in some areas. The outcome of the inspection is that the council’s ratings for supporting children in care, as well as leadership, have improved to ‘good’ from ‘requires improvement’. For children in need of help and protection, and for overall effectiveness, the service still 'requires improvement to be good'. Inspectors also praised a number of areas, such as the strength of support to disabled children, a good variety of Early Help services and the support available to children in care and care leavers. The county council says immediate action is being taken to address the issues identified, which includes more consistent oversight of care plans and tackling the timeliness of assessments for children, who are not identified as being in immediate risk of significant harm. Ofsted also recognised: ➢ Effectiveness in keeping the most vulnerable young people safe from harm ➢ Most children in care are settled in good homes with their needs well met and they are making good progress ➢ Most care leavers live in suitable accommodation and are participating in education, training and employment ➢ There is a timely and effective response when children are in need of help and protection ➢ Good quality placements for children in care

t: 0800 6446 150 • e: yourlocal@openboxpromotions.co.uk • w: www.openboxpromotions.co.uk

➢ Young people being encouraged to express their views ➢ Progress in recruiting and retaining staff Further developments needed include: ➢ Timeliness of assessment and help for those children not at immediate risk of significant harm ➢ Timeliness of work to secure positive change for children during the pre-proceedings stage of child protection procedures ➢ The quality and consistency of social work practice in care planning ➢ Quality of case recording The Ofsted inspection took place during three weeks in late September-early October. The report is available to view at https://www. leicestershire.gov.uk/news/improvements-tomany-areas-of-childrens-social-care-saysofsted

Council Priorities -

Following a major consultation carried out by Leicestershire County Council asking residents views on the Council priorities going forward, the results have now been published. Support for vulnerable people should be protected along with residential and community support for older people and mental health – plus special educational needs and disabilities, child protection and children in care - are in the top 10 services people do not wish to see reduced. Road and path maintenance, gritting, waste disposal and waste sites also make the top 10 services people most want to protect.

Over 4,300 people took part in the survey which also shows: ➢ 82% of people support a Council Tax rise in line with inflation (2%) or above ➢ 81% agree with re-organising local government to make savings ➢ 86% support protecting the environment by using renewable energy and reducing carbon This is the biggest exercise the council has run since 2013 and the council would like to thank people for taking the time to respond. It is important taxpayers have their say and help to shape services moving forward. The new online budget tool offered a welcome new dimension and was welcomed by responders. Despite a one-year cash injection from the Government, the council’s financial situation remains extremely challenging. Growing service demands and national uncertainty mean that more tough decisions lie ahead. The latest budget proposals will be published in December and the responses will shape these plans. You can see the full highlights of the consultation at https://www.leicestershire. gov.uk/sites/default/files/field/pdf/2019/10/23 /Leicestershire-Priorities-Survey-ScrutinyCommission-30-10-19-final.pdf

Green Plaque Awards - This countywide scheme invites local residents and those associated with the county to nominate and vote for the people and places they think are worthy of commemoration. Over the course of this popular scheme the County Council have celebrated people, places and events

across Leicestershire. In June 2014, they unveiled the first Green Plaque to philanthropist Charles Booth in Thringstone. Since then they have unveiled a further 24, the latest to Suffragette sisters Nora and Kathleen Corcoran from Loughborough. Others include artist and illustrator John T. Kenney, the Drill Hall in Melton, the Palitoy factory in Coalville, Nobel Prize winner, William Henry Bragg, WWI soldier and poet Arthur Newberry Choyce from Hugglescote and Crimean War nurse Ann Ayre Hely from Ravenstone. On Tuesday 12th November, the next round of nominations will be launched. Residents, and those associated with the County, will have until Monday 23rd December to nominate people or places to be commemorated. Nominations can be made online at www.leicestershire.gov.uk/greenplaques, or by calling 0116 305 4112 and requesting a nomination form. The County Council hope residents will continue to support the scheme and its aims by encouraging residents to nominate those they think are worthy of a commemorative Green Plaque.

I would like to wish all readers a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year. If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help.

Now Played Nine, WON Nine for Anstey Rugby The excellent run in our 40th season continues with recent wins away at Old Newtonians and Mellish played in some horrendous conditions due to the long dry spell we have had this autumn. Just goes to prove that we are now producing a team that is adaptable to all the elements. On 23rd November due to the cancellation of our home league game our squad made the 35 mile trip to the far side of Nottingham to play Mellish where we came up against a powerful team ready to get their own back, following the big win we had when we hosted them at Link Road in August. Despite a ferocious defence from our hosts, Anstey opened the scoring with a try after 15 minutes. Like a red rag to a bull this wound Mellish up who attacked relentlessly scoring three converted tries before half time leaving our team trailing 21-5. Back for the second half and absolute determination saw four tries and one conversion being scored by Anstey. Final score - Mellish 21, Anstey 27. A great team come back. The previous week we went over to Top of the Table and unbeaten Old Newts who were keen to keep up their record of winning every game this season and promoting that ambition all over Social Media. With some hard tackling in appalling wet conditions Anstey managed to get to half time winning by a penally and a try 0-8. Another penalty and a converted try brought the Anstey score up to 18 points. After conceding a number of penalties in the second half the final score was Old Newts 8, Anstey 18. Now Anstey are the only unbeaten side in our league! Fixtures are in place every week right through to President’s Day on 3rd May with our big 40th Anniversary Gala Dinner taking place on Saturday 13th June. Note in your new 2020 calendars please. We want as many people as possible who have been involved with Anstey RFC since 1980 to be with us on the night. All our fixtures can be found on our website at www.pitchhero.com/clubs/anstey Or on our club noticeboard in The Coach & Horses (carpark end) Training is every Wednesday evening under floodlights at out Link Road ground. Anstey RFC are always ready to welcome new players, experienced or not. As well as playing, you will join the lively social life that goes with Rugby Union. As a bonus, playing the game will help get you fit. Matches are on Saturdays, kicking off at 2:15pm, reverting to 3pm from next March. If you would like to support the club contact any committee member for details. Details for all the club officials are on the Anstey RFC noticeboard inside our clubhouse at The Coach and Horses. ‘Making Christmas Special’ for Older people spending Christmas Day in What is Christmas Jumper hospital. Day and when is it?

Older people spending Christmas in one of Leicester’s Hospitals will once again receive a gift bag this year, donated by the generous local community.

Christmas Jumper Day is an annual charity event it is held on December 13th, with 100% of proceeds going to the charity ‘Save the Children’. Individuals and Organisations, businesses and schools, find their most festive jumpers and wear the jumpers to work for the day instead of normal clothes or uniforms, to raise funds through sponsorship. A cheerful and festive way or raising funds and awareness for Save the Children in time for Christmas. Often workers and students add to the fun by competing for the best festive jumper prize, some workplaces get very competitive and hold official competitions for the prize, while jumper-wearers, friends, families and co-workers sponsor the festive jumpers and thus the funds are raised for Save the Children. Money can be pledged via Save the Children’s Website, by text, by post and online. So far over 4 million pounds has been raised by this annual event, so it is certainly something to consider taking part in and adding it as a new tradition among your festivities. Save the Children has a fundraising leaderboard, showing the amounts that teams have raised, which is a good incentive, they also show photographs of some participants, as well as giving details of what the raised money is being used for. Christmas Jumper Day is a great photo opportunity for companies and teams to show their community spirit and advertise their company as an approachable and caring organization.

Marie Curie Counts on Collection Volunteers Start this year with a good feeling - Marie Curie is appealing for local volunteers to help at their Great Daffodil Appeal Collection from February to April. Could this be you? Collections are an integral part of the Marie Curie fundraising calendar and without them it would not be possible to provide the necessary nursing care for our terminally ill patients and their families in Leicestershire & Rutland. The local Marie Curie fundraising team are seeking collectors to help at collection days in supermarkets, stores and towns. Claire Korsakovs, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for Leicestershire & Rutland says “As a collector you’ll be able to raise vital money for local people to enable them spend their last weeks or days at home where they wish to be. Our collection slots are only two hours long and will most definitely leave you with that charitable feeling”. Whether you’re a seasonal fundraiser or a newcomer looking to get involved for the first time, the local Marie Curie fundraising office would love to hear from you.

‘Making Christmas Special’ is a collaborative campaign between Leicester’s Hospitals, Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland and Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT). Every year, there are patients too ill to leave hospital and spend Christmas Day with their loved ones. ‘Making Christmas Special’ aims to spread a little festive cheer to older patients who will be spending Christmas in one of Leicester’s Hospitals. Now in its seventh year, the campaign is encouraging the local community to donate a small gift bag that will be distributed by hospital staff and volunteers to older patients on Christmas Day. In 2018, the public of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland showed a fantastic amount of generosity by donating over 1,500 gifts. In past years, the campaign has been so successful that donated gifts exceeded the need in Leicester’s Hospitals and could be shared with some community hospitals. There are gift tags to download and packaging and gift guidelines on the Leicester Hospitals website. Tony Donovan, Executive Director at Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland, added: “This campaign makes an enormous difference to older patients who have to spend Christmas in hospital and the generosity of the community always brings a smile to their face. We’re delighted to be working with Leicester’s Hospitals and Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust to bring the Christmas spirit to what could otherwise be a lonely time. Our shops and resource centres will act as donation points across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland for anyone who would like to offer a small gift.”

So how can you donate? It’s really simple! Visit the website of Leicester’s Hospitals (www.leicesterhospitals.nhs.uk) or Age UK (www.ageukleics.org.uk) to download and print a gift tag. Write your message on the gift tag and tick whether the gift is suitable for a man, suitable for a woman, or suitable for anyone. Attach the tag to a small gift bag containing unwrapped gifts such as lip balm, hand lotion, slipper socks, bed socks, biscuits, sweets, cereal bars, hot chocolate or coffee sachets, pens, pencils, and puzzle books. The websites have a full list of what could be donated and what we cannot accept.

To become a Marie Curie Collector, you need to be aged 16 or over. Children are welcome to collect alongside a parent or guardian.

Take your gift bag/s to the main receptions at the Royal Infirmary, General or Glenfield Hospital or to any Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland shop or resource centre in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

For more information for how you can get involved, please contact Claire Korsakovs on 07595 087169 or claire.korsakovs@mariecurie.org.uk

Donations can be made throughout November and up until Friday 13th December 2019.

Thurcaston & Cropston Local History Society

Anstey Christmas Gala Just a reminder that due to limited resources this year, the gala on Saturday 7th December is only being held in 2 venues - St Marys Church & St Marys Church Rooms, this decision has not been made lightly by the Anstey Gala Committee.

Our final meeting of the year included a brief AGM, followed by short talks from two of our members. Brenda Hooper recounted some of the episodes in the life of Richard Waterfield, who was Rector of the Parish of Thurcaston, Cropston and Anstey from 1838 to 1864. Among the major works of this generous man were the repair and renovation of All Saints’ Church, Thurcaston; the erection of a monument inside in memory of Hugh Latimer; and the rebuilding of St. Mary’s, Anstey – all at his own expense. A beautiful stained-glass window in St. Mary’s is a lasting memorial to this ‘kind and agreeable man and clear-headed preacher’ (Mary Kirby). Waterfield Road in Cropston is also named after him. Margaret Greiff then told us about Two Gentlemen of Thurcaston, who were associated with Thurcaston Manor during Shakespearean times. Nicholas Gravenor was the last Lord of the Manor of Thurcaston who actually lived in the village. He was born in about 1560, presumably in the manor house which his father had recently built or extended (and which no longer survives). The Manor of Thurcaston also included Keyham and Maplewell and when Nicholas grew up he decided to build himself a new manor house, with a moat, at Maplewell (near Woodhouse Eaves). He was involved in several lawsuits for debt and it is said that Nicholas and his wife would avoid paying church dues by worshipping in a different parish each week! The land and title to the Manor was sold in 1627 and Nicholas died in Leicester two years later, leaving only 12 pence to each of his sons and 20 shillings to his daughter. Nicholas Gorson was the only person from our immediate area known to have been charged with being a “recusant” Catholic, which means that he refused to attend Anglican church services. He was born in 1545 and probably studied law at Oxford, where his name is written in an early printed book at the Bodleian Library. He succeeded his father as the tenant at Thurcaston Manor and in 1595 his second marriage was to Ann Gravenor, who must be the sister of Nicholas Gravenor mentioned above. The Gunpowder Plot in 1605 led the Bishop of Lincoln to crack down on the “dangerous infection of popery” in his diocese, and in 1607 Nicholas Gorson was summoned to kneel before the bishop and promise to conform to the Anglican faith for the rest of his life. Documents show that he needed to raise money soon afterwards, probably for the payment of fines, and when he died in 1616 he left only modest sums to his children. Please note that from January we will continue to meet on the third Tuesday of the month but at a NEW VENUE, Thurcaston Memorial Hall. Do join us at 7.30pm on Tuesday 21st January, when Douglas Clinton will return to tell us about Guthlac: the East Midlands’ Saxon warrior and saint. Visitor fee: £3. www.thurcastoncropstonhistory.org.uk

We hope to rotate the gala around venues each year, and hopefully in time will be able to build it back up to full scale with the help and support of more volunteers. The Gala will start with the opening of the venues for refreshments and games at 2.30pm, entertainment from Ratby Mid Band and the Woolden Hill & Latimer School choirs will begin from 3pm and it will all finish in the nook with Carol singing alongside Ratby Mid band at 4:45pm. Also don't forget to come vote for your favourite Christmas Tree in the 'Public Choice Award' and see if you agree with our 'Impartial Judge Award' this year.

We look forward to seeing you there

CCTV cameras to tackle fly-tipping CCTV cameras are being deployed in Charnwood as the borough council steps up its fight against fly-tippers. The council has introduced the cameras in various hot-spots across the area and it comes as the Council launches its annual Don’t Muck Around campaign to tackle enviro-crime. Alan Twells, head of regulatory services at the Council, said: “The cameras are the latest weapon in the fight against fly-tipping in Charnwood.

Seven women from Anstey are planning to Ride the Night in London next year.

“We are already proactive. Our enviro-crime officers investigate every incident and we issue fixed penalty notices or instigate a prosecution whenever possible.

We will be cycling 100km through London overnight. A few of us are experienced cyclists and a few of us haven’t been on a bike for a while!

“We are hoping the cameras will not only catch some people in the act but also act as a deterrent to would-be fly-tippers. “Residents can also play a part in tackling fly-tipping. If you pay someone to dispose of your rubbish then please make sure they are licensed waste carriers because if they are not and your waste is fly-tipped, it could be you who ends up with a fine or in court.

One thing we have in common is a passion for raising money to fight women’s cancers. We are hoping to raise as much as possible for Women V Cancer and will be holding events over next few months. We are holding a Jumble Sale in Anstey on 16th November, at Jubilee Hall 10am – 2pm.

“Sometimes people are approached on social media so we would advise residents to be wary. You can check if someone is a licensed waste collector by visiting the Environment Agency website.

It would be great to have lots of people coming along to support us. There will be Coffee & Cake available, so even if you don’t want to buy anything its worth coming along.

“It is disappointing that the number of incidents in Charnwood has risen but we will continue to use all powers at our disposal to tackle the problem.”

In 2018/19 there were 852 fly-tipping incidents in Charnwood compared with 673 in 2017/18 and 603 in 2016/17. When enough evidence is recovered from a fly-tip, the Council takes action. In 2017/18 the Council issued 17 fixed penalty notices, each for £400, totalling £6,800. The council will also take action in court and since 2015, Charnwood has successfully brought 22 prosecutions, with offenders being left with fines and costs plus a criminal record. As well as fly-tipping, the Don’t Muck Around campaign will highlight littering issues. There is a particular focus on litter being thrown from vehicles and the Council is supporting a county-wide campaign to raise awareness of the issue. The registered keeper of a vehicle can be issued a fixed penalty notice for £150 for littering, regardless of who threw the litter from the vehicle. Council street wardens have already taken part in some joint enforcement action with other councils in Leicestershire and more is being planned. The Council street warden teams will also be carrying out patrols in areas where there have been complaints about littering and dog fouling. THE MONDAY CLUB CROPSTON AND THURCASTON

CROPSTON EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH Skeletons in the Cupboard Mrs Penny Hodgson entertained us with her personal story of trying to find out about her own family and their more distant ancestors; and those of her husband, who had been adopted. She began her search before the days of relatively easy access to various kinds of information, which can now be obtained by computer, and spent long hours poring over paper records in different libraries, trying to piece the puzzle together. She is distantly related to a doctor who attended Queen Victoria in childbirth. Mrs Hodgson herself has traced part of her family back to the early 1600s, but it can be more difficult the further back you try to go. As a child you might not ask many questions about family connections, or you may be discouraged from asking too much, but as older members of the family die out you may wish you had investigated a bit more. One chatty relative could save you hours of fruitless searching. (The characters in “Last of the Summer Wine” always seemed to know who married who and what became of them.) Where does anyone even start? Well, with oneself actually. Try to note down names of your parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts, cousins. If a relative had an unusual surname or first name, this makes the search easier. Surnames could originate from the place that somebody came from, or they might refer to

that person’s work: Smith, Cooper, Archer, Farmer and so on. Bear in mind that records may contain spelling errors. Another way to find out about your family history is to have your DNA tested. The results may include information about other people with whom you appear to have a close match, and who may therefore be related. Although many families seem pleased to find additional relatives, it is best not to barge in on their lives without warning, and you should take basic precautions when going to meet someone who is a stranger to you … tell a friend where you are going; and don’t give out personal information like your date of birth or mother’s maiden name to other people online, especially if you are on an “open” computer site. Mrs Hodgson had brought some family photographs with her, and remarked how the different generations can look alike, or share the same interests and talents, such as music, from different branches of the same family. Searching for relatives often reveals that a person was married more than once, or was not married but had children, or committed bigamy, and so it goes on! Finding an ancestor is interesting but no guarantee of their character, of course. Libraries are a good source of information, and nowadays many computer sites can help

you trace your family tree, in return for a membership fee. Sometimes you can get a trial weekend free. You can also obtain copies of documents like birth, death and marriage certificates; there is a charge for these. Another valuable source of information is the ten-yearly National Census, which began in 1841. Forms were completed by an enumerator. From 1911 the householder was required to fill in the form instead. There were boxes asking how long a couple had been married, how many children they had had, and how many were still alive … infant mortality was extremely high in the past, especially in the industrialised areas. Mrs Hodgson answered some questions from the audience, and told us never to give up hope. She urged anyone interested to have a go, and suggested it is a good idea to write down important research you find in book form, for the benefit of future generations who may also wish to delve into the family history. *** Meetings start at 2.15pm on the second Monday of each month. On 13th January 2020 we start with a light-hearted talk called “Do You Remember?” Please check local posters for details. Visitors and new members are always welcome. Admission to our AGM meeting on 10th February will actually be free! The rest of the year will be varied and interesting. Please come along and see!
