Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club The Club goes from strength to strength. We have seen a steady increase in membership over the last few years and once again we aim to provide a full and varied programme in 2018 for our members. In 2017 we held nine Club nights at the Thurcaston village hall and a summer programme that included a visit to Goadby Marwood Hall near Melton Mowbray and a trip to the inaugural RHS Flower Show at Chatsworth House in June. We added a second trip to our schedule this year, an autumn visit to Batsford Arboretum and Nursery. We held our 34th Annual Show at the Richard Hill Primary School. The Show is open to everyone and brings together not only Club members but like-minded gardening folk from far and wide. It’s a day of fun and gentle competitiveness, we would love to see you in September 2018 at our 35th Show. Have a go, you will enjoy it enormously. Show schedules are widely available from early spring. Club members decorated the alter area for the All Saints Church Harvest Festival weekend in October, putting together another fine display. We have confidence that the programme we have put together for 2018 will maintain the high standard of events we have offered in recent years. In June we welcome writer and broadcaster Matthew Wilson, former curator at RHS Harlow Carr. To link in nicely with his talk, RHS Harlow Carr will be our destination for the Club trip in August. An early season trip to Ashwood Nurseries in March and talks that include subjects on Garden Design, Gardens of the National Trust, My Favourite Plants, and Botanic Gardens are just some of the highlights. We are confident there will be something for everyone. Watch out for our eye-catching A4 leaflet detailing our complete programme for 2018. The annual membership fee is still only £12 (£3) for visitors. Fees are on a pro rata basis after the first 3 months. And, if you would like to come as a visitor and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!!

Newtown Linford Gardening Club Gardener’s Question Time We are absolutely thrilled to announce that the BBC are coming to Newtown Linford on January 30th to record an episode of the long running programme ‘Gardener’s Question Time’. The recording will be held in the Village hall. Doors will open at 5.30pm and the recording will begin at 6.15pm. Local gardeners from this village and from nearby villages are all invited to attend and to submit questions for the panel to consider. At this time we do not know the names of the panellists but there will be, almost certainly, three from the following list of British horticultural legends:Christine Walkden Matthew Biggs Bob Flowerdew
Chris Beardshaw Anne Swithinbank James Wong
Bunny Guinness Pippa Greenwood Matthew Wilson
Tickets for this event are available from our secretary and will cost only ÂŁ4.50, a sum which will include a glass of wine. The hall holds 150 people and so only that number will be available. Tickets can be obtained by contacting the numbers listed below. Bob Flowerdew We can also announce that Bob Flowerdew will be speaking to us in our Village Hall on Tuesday April 24th. He is very wellknown to gardeners from his regular appearances on television and for his highly original hair style with its very long pigtail. We are pleased to invite members of other local gardening clubs and interested individuals to join us on this occasion. Tickets will be ÂŁ10 and can be obtained from our secretary. The contact numbers for both these events are 01530 242452 or by e-mail to 32couling@gmail.com
FILM PRESENTATIONS
Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council In December, we had to decide whether Captain Sullenberger was a hero or a fraud. In the seconds after a flock of geese hit his plane engines, he decided to save the 155 passengers by landing in the River Hudson. Tom Hanks played "Sully" remarkably well. We were on the edge of our seats as the Safety Board Enquiry seemed to be going against him when he spoke up with the deciding factors. What a film!
"Their Finest" will be shown on January 12th 2018 and lasts 117 minutes. This wonderfully entertaining British comedy drama will happily bring Christmas-tide to an end. During WW11, the Ministry of Information's Film Division is trying to add a female perspective to the propaganda at cinemas. Actor Ambrose Hillyard, played masterfully by Bill Nighy, is already resentful of a woman's presence in decision- making. Will this famous actor's haughtiness reduce female assertiveness? "The Viceroy's House" will be shown on February 9th and lasts 106 minutes. Set in 1947 Delhi, the British statesman, Lord Mountbatten, serves as India's last viceroy. He is charged with handing India back to its people. Romance blossoms between a Hindu servant and Muslim sweetheart. Starring Hugh Bonneville, the British Raj thought that they would remain in India for another two hundred years. However, the climate changed irrevocably. February's film is sumptuous.
"Victoria and Abdul" will be shown on March 9th.

ANSTEY WI
Anstey WI has been celebrating recently. In an unusual three way final, they narrowly beat Markfield and Groby institutes to win the Bradgate group skittles tournament for the second consecutive time. The December meeting took the form of a Christmas party. After an interval of intense concentration as we folded napkins into the shape of a Christmas tree, we welcomed a surprise visitor. As well as distributing secret gifts, Santa washed up after a superb bring and share supper. If only all WI husbands were like our secret Santa!

The Big Garden Birdwatch Saturday 27 January to Monday 29 January The Big Garden Birdwatch takes place over three days from Saturday 27 January to Monday 29 January, so if you're busy over the weekend or perhaps the weather's bad, you have the option of a third day! Maybe you can do Big Garden Birdwatch at work? We'd love to hear from you if you do! Share your experiences on social media don't forget to use #BigGardenBirdwatch.
We've got everything you need to know about joining in! How to take part Joining in with Big Garden Birdwatch is simple and enjoyable - and a great excuse to watch your garden birds. Here's our step-by-step guide... • Choose a good place to watch from for an hour from 27-29 January 2018. Which window gives you the best view? Make sure it's comfy and you have the essentials within easy reach - a nice, hot drink and your favourite biscuits - and somewhere to
jot down what you see. On the website we've got a nifty counting tool to help you keep track of what you've seen. • If you haven't got a garden that's no problem. Just pop down to your local park or green space and join in there. • Relax and watch the birds for an hour. • Count the maximum number of each species you see at any one time. For example, if you see a group of three house sparrows together and later another two, and after that another one, the number to submit is three. That way, it’s less likely you’ll double-count the same birds. • Come back to the Big Garden Birdwatch website and tell us what you’ve seen. Or use a paper form. It’s FREE to post back to us. That’s it! By taking part and telling us what you see, you're helping us find out more about garden wildlife - so take a big pat on the back from us.
What if I don’t see anything? Oh no! It can be really frustrating if all your garden regulars don't show up on the day you do Big Garden Birdwatch. If you watch for an hour but don't see a dicky bird, we'd still like you to tell us about it! Even a total of 0 birds is still useful data to us it's as important to know where there weren't any birds as where there were lots. There are also questions about the other wildlife you might see in your garden yearround. If you're disappointed in your birds' lack of loyalty, we'd love you still to send in your results.

destinations shone in the prestigious Leicester- Shire Promotions 2017 Tourism and Hospitality Awards. The Borough picked up a total of 16 awards and I was pleased to see many of these within my Forest Bradgate Ward. This shows how strong an offer Charnwood has for tourists and it is becoming increasingly important to our local economy.
David Snartt Reports... Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate
Peter Crankshaw It was with great sadness that I learned of Peter’s death. Peter has made a significant contribution in making Woodhouse Parish a better place to live. He has been involved in several projects where he has made a difference, especially using his journalistic background to communicate the outcomes for the benefit of the local community. None more so than his latest involvement with Woodhouse Neighbourhood Watch Group, where he was actively involved communicating and updating residents on local crime issues. Just recently I recall his excellent report from the meeting with the Police regarding the increase in crime within the Parish. Peter will be missed.
Update on Planning I made reference to a planning application last month about an application to erect two detached bungalows and formation of an access drive at land adjacent to 12 Windmill Rise, Woodhouse Eaves. I stated I had supported the comments made by the case planning officer. I understand this planning application has now been withdrawn.
Armed Forces Covenant Charnwood Borough Council signed the Armed Forces Covenant in February 2014. The Covenant is a promise from the Nation ensuring that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces and their families are treated fairly. The Covenant’s two principles are that: The Armed Forces community should not face disadvantages compared to other citizens in the provision of public and commercial services, and special consideration is appropriate in some cases, such as the injured and bereaved. Some areas where the Covenant supports our forces families are in education, access to healthcare and housing. Other ways Charnwood Borough Council supports its Armed Forces is by supporting
national initiatives, including a flag raising ceremony outside Loughborough Town Hall. This provides a high profile opportunity to raise awareness of the role of our Armed Forces and their families continue to play, this along with co-ordinating arrangements for marking Remembrance Sunday and the importance of recognising the marking of the two minute silence on Armistice Day. The reason for bringing this to your attention is because Charnwood Borough Council have produced a survey asking currently serving or ex-serving personnel in the Armed Forces along with family members to complete this survey. The findings from this survey may help to develop future military support and events along with future service provision. This information may also be passed on to selected organisations in support of funding applications to support the Council’s work. I do hope as many eligible residents will complete this survey by going online to www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/AFCC_Survey.
Charnwood Armed Forces Breakfast Club Carrying on the Armed Forces theme, I would like to remind current or ex-members of the Armed Forces and their families about the Charnwood Armed Forces Breakfast Club which runs monthly at the Toby Carvery, Loughborough from 9.30am to 11.30am every second Saturday in the month. The next date will be 10th February 2018, when they will be celebrating their first birthday. During the year the Breakfast Club has gone from strength to strength and is a most popular and enjoyable event. If you would like more information, please e-mail victoria.coomber@charnwood.gov.uk.

This year the Tourism Superstar accolade went to the deer herd at Bradgate Park, On the night, it was stated: they have proved to be an irrestible draw for literally millions of people over decades. I must agree, since being very young I have always enjoyed seeing the deer, and hearing them at the yearly rut. The Best Leicester Breakfast and Most Enjoyable Stay, these two categories, were won by Horse Shoe Cottage Farm and The Outstanding Afternoon Tea was won by The Café Next Door, Woodhouse Eaves. May I take this opportunity to congratulate all the winners, I was delighted to see The Café Next Door being among the winners in their first year of opening.
Charnwood Design Awards The winners of the 2017 Charnwood Design Awards have been announced. The awards recognise high quality building design in the Borough and the excellent work of building owners, agents and contractors. The awards were designed to encourage high standards in the built environment, demonstrating the Council’s vision for high quality design, also making a positive contribution to the Borough, as set out in Charnwood Borough Council’s Core Strategy. I was pleased to see that one of the two winners was in my Forest Bradgate Ward, Roecliffe Hall, Swithland Road, Woodhouse Eaves. In my view, after many years of decline and risk to this historic structure from lack of maintenance and vandalism, it has been restored sympathetically and is a worthy winner of this award. If you need to contact me on any issues, please write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail cllr.david.snartt@charnwood.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

Happy New Year to you all and I hope you all had a lovely Christmas. I spent some time with the family over Christmas and had a very quiet new year, fully rested for the hard work ahead for 2018. I know this is a difficult time of the year for some people and my thoughts are with you. I had a few meetings cancelled due to the snow and ice before Christmas and we had some very treacherous conditions in our rural villages due to lack of gritting. I have asked for some more information on the road priority for gritting. I paid a visit to the Glenfield and Melton project situated in Glenfield on 30th November 2017. This project offers short break respite care for children with severe learning difficulties and complex health needs. This project does an amazing job of supporting parents and carers and offers that much needed break to enable them to rest and spend time with siblings. It was a very humbling experience. I have attended some training this month on the HS2 project, Equality and Human Rights and Resilience and Emergency Planning. This emergency planning training was completed two weeks before the awful explosion in Birstall and I saw this emergency planning come into action. My thoughts are with the many families affected by this tragedy. I attend the Anstey Christmas Gala and joined residents for carols in St Mary’s church. A lovely event as always and it puts everyone in the Christmas spirit. I also popped into Anstey’s Community Library the following week to see Santa in his grotto. It was busy again and a lovely atmosphere in the library. I also attended the Mayor of Charnwood Community Carol service in Loughborough followed by mince pies and plan to attend Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.
Fairhaven Farm Bloor Homes have submitted an application to Charnwood Borough Council for the removal of condition 25 of P/14/0428/2, which relates to off-site highway works to the A46 junction/ roundabout. The developers are requesting to submit an off-site contribution to a wider highways scheme that Leicestershire County Council (LCC) has received funding for. This condition required the developer to carry out improvements to the roundabout above the A46 before the occupation of the first dwelling. LCC have secured funding from Highways England to fully signalise the roundabout and dual part of the A560
12
carriageway. Bloor Homes planned to carry out their highways works for 2 months from January 2018 and LCC would then be starting their work in April/May 2018. LCC have requested a contribution of £154,555.20 towards the wider highway works. I support this application to minimise the disruptions that will occur for these works. All the highway works will be carried out in the spring 2018. The traffic safety audit has been carried out in The Nook, following the highway works. There is still further work to carry out to improve safety in the area and I will be following this up.
Bus Stop Relocation I am finally able to publish the decision on the relocation of the bus stop on Leicester Road. Within the legal agreement the landowners, Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) signed when the planning permission was approved, there was a requirement that the developers would use their ‘Best Endeavours’ to relocate the bus stop. I have disputed for many months that they had not used their ‘Best Endeavours’. After the many hours of work and research that I have put into this issue and my constant pushing of the planning officers at CBC, Bloor Homes have agreed to pass £62,425 to Anstey Parish Council for them to implement the bus stop relocation. This is a great result for the village but there is still a lot of hard work ahead of us. Highway work is not something the Parish Council would normally get involved in and this will be a challenge for the Parish Council to deliver. The Parish will have 5 years from when they receive this money to deliver a scheme. I will be supporting the Parish Council to deliver this project for the whole village and I am confident that with the excellent team we have at the Parish Council we can achieve this. It would also be good to have lots of input from the village and surrounding villages when the Parish Council embark on this project sometime in the new year. Please attend the Parish Meetings when you can and especially when this is on the agenda to pass on your thoughts.
Women in Sheds Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland is building on the huge success of the Charnwood Men in Sheds project and will be meeting the demand from local ladies for their own Shed experience. Whilst the project rapidly became a success with local older men, many older women are also demanding the opportunity to pursue practical hobbies and interests like woodworking, electronics, arts/crafts,
gardening and upholstery to name a few, with a group of like-minded peers. In response to this demand, Age UK Leicestershire and Rutland will be launching a regular weekly session for older women (50 plus) at the Loughborough shed in January 2018. Regular sessions are planned to start on Tuesday 9th January, operating weekly from then on, between 9.30am and 1.30pm. The shed is located in the Oaks Industrial Estate, Festival Drive Loughborough, LE11 5XN. If you are interested and would like to register, please contact Martin Gladders on 01509 211603 or email martin.gladders@ageukleics.org.uk
Leicestershire Promotions 2017 Tourism and Hospitality Awards Charnwood Borough picked up a total of 16 awards at Leicestershire Promotions 2017 Tourism and Hospitality Awards. The Borough Council was pleased to see Queen’s Park commended and the town of Loughborough being highly commended, but particular delight was taken by the number of awards received in Charnwood. The winners were: • Horseshoe Cottage Farm, Cropston (two categories) • The Café Next Door, Woodhouse Eaves • Imago – Holywell Park and Loughborough • Charnwood Cider • Bradgate Park • Stonehurst Farm, Mountsorrel • Deer Herd at Bradgate Park • John’s House, Mountsorrel I was particularly happy to see two awards going to Horseshoe Cottage Farm and Bradgate Park, both of which are in my County Division. Congratulations to all involved and well done to the winners.
Maplewell Hall Special School I am continuing to do a huge amount of work against the proposed closure of the residential facilities at this school for children with moderate learning difficulties. I have spoken at the Children’s and Families Overview Scrutiny, Cabinet and at the Full Council in December at County Hall, in response to a petition with over 11,500 signatures that was handed into Leicestershire County Council. The proposals are now planned to go out for formal consultations in January with a decision expected by the Cabinet on 9th March 2018. I visited the school for a second time on Friday 15th December 2017 along with Edward Argar MP and Nicky Morgan MP who are both against this closure. It was a productive

Newtown Linford Choral Society: A Concert For Peace As everybody knows, the year 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War. All previous wars were eclipsed by the scale of its destruction, and in the decade that followed it became known as ‘The War to end all Wars’ - sadly that has not been the case. The Choral Society’s concert on Friday 2 and Sat 3 February 2018 in Ratby Church will reflect hopes that have been expressed for a lasting peace in the world. Orchestral accompaniment will be provided by the Fortissimo Quartet and virtuoso cellist Maxine McGinnes. There will also be a professional soprano soloist Bethan Williams, and Choral Society soloists Clive Hilton and John Williams. One of the works to be performed will be ‘Eternal Light’, which is a Requiem composed in 2008 by Howard Goodall.. He has stated that his aim in composing this lovely piece of music aim was to provide solace for the grieving. In addition to winning plaudits for his classical compositions Howard Goodall has also won many awards for music that he has composed for TV and radio, including The Vicar of Dibley, Blackadder, and Mr Bean! Other music to be performed at the concert will include the Prayer of St Francis (by Allen Pote), Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace (Wesley), extracts from The Armed Man (by Karl Jenkins), and two anthems by John Rutter. Tickets at £10 (£5 for children under 18 and students) will be available from 1 December from Newtown Linford store, Ratby Post Office, Peter and Iris on 01530 243822, or online at either www.ticketsource.co.uk/event/15501 or via a link on the Choral Society’s Facebook page.

The Martin High School... “Inspiring to dream more, learn more, do more and become more.” We are Martin High School
A long and successful term for all We are in the top 13 schools in Leicestershire for our GCSE results and in January we will publish the validated results information on our website.
Hopefully in the New Year we can continue to involve our learners with people that live in their Leonard Cheshire Disability community. Our Christmas Fayre and raffle took place on the last day of term and this year we have been supporting The Leonard Cheshire disability Home on Stadon Road, Anstey. We will give you an update in the New Year.
Our assessment fortnight was hugely positive, with learners working hard and striving to achieve their very best. We are delighted to announce we have received the Healthy School Award for Emotional Health and Wellbeing. We are extremely proud of the holistic care our learners receive here at MHS and achieving this status is real recognition of that work.
Laura Sanchez Cedars Martin
Head Teacher
Our Post-16 provision is really taking off; there have been several taster events and more are planned for the New Year. UCAS applications are now being submitted and it is great to see our learners opting for Cedar Martin.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk And so this is Christmas and look what you’ve done? another year over and a new one about to begin. (I’m sure I could make a song out of those lyrics?) For me it’s been reasonable even if I did spend New Year’s Eve last year in hospital and missed a great fund raising night at Anstey Nomads with the Buskateers. I did manage to stay out of my hospital time share until September 2017. Things haven’t been so good since but I am always optimistic and keep looking forward.
(Alec Parker?) on Bradgate Road, Fish ‘n chips 1/3d. or if things were a bit tight just a 3d. bag of chips and some scratchings, which were free. Times were hard so homemade chips in the chip pan was the other option. Failing that bread and dripping with gravy sandwiches, a regular in our house. Tommy Storer or George Keating came round in the unique ice cream van. Cornets with Red Donkeys blood, or Green Martians blood. 3d. each or a tanner for a big one.
Thank you to everyone for their continued support and my fellow councillor Debra Taylor who has been a great help when I was really poorly. I know I shouldn’t look back but it got me thinking of days gone by… I grew up in Anstey with my 2 brothers Andrew and the late Alan at a time when everyone it seemed was treated as family, we did have loads of aunts and uncles, some real others just called uncle/auntie. We went out on the street (Church Lane) and played marbles, I had a 6’r!
We played hide ‘n seek, tracking and had water fights! No such thing as bottled water, unless it was in an old TIZER bottle from the tap or hose, yes we actually drank direct from the cold water tap and no one died on the spot.
Played football for a while until Geoff Preston (Usually) would hit someone’s window, then we would go down the “Reccy” with the 5/Frido ball for a proper game usually about 15 a side, with coats and jumpers as goalposts. We all got mucked up but it was fun. Sir Bobby Charlton is still my all-time footballing hero. If you fell over and cut or grazed yourself our mam would give it a clean then unless it looked like it might need a stitch and a trip to see Dr. Lang, she would reach for the “Germolene” then bandage or plaster your wound which you could show off later to your mates. I have a set of wings on my left leg. Any thought of a visit to accident and emergency, phew, then it was serious… Fast food was down to the only chip shop

These bottles were rare however because you could take the empties back to Mr. Smiths/George Lillies off-licence and get money back on them. (The MARSTON sign is still on the wall up Bradgate Road.) A big bottle of pop was a treat and we all drank from the same bottle! Yes of course we cleaned the top on our mucky shirt sleeves before passing the bottle round, we had manners. Walks to Bradgate Park over the “Dumples” sharing the TIZER or DANDELION and BURDOCK and dripping sandwiches. By the time we got there the pop had long gone so we would clean out the bits of bread out of the bottle and refill it from the spring near the ruins, whilst still paddling in it! We, the Ritchie’s from Link Road, Glen Gillett, John Harris, Me and David Knight were the usual culprits. All armed with fishing nets and large jam jars in the hope we might catch a stickle back, tiddler or the big prize a cray fish to take back home. Trouble is they never lasted more than a day or two. Nearly forgot the masses of Frogs spawn. Horrid stuff.

I was 10 years old before I got my first 2 wheeler 2nd. hand bike. It was a Hercules with Sturmey Archer 3 speed gears, and cost £12 from Jack Smiths shop on Cropston Road. I saved up money to pay for half of it from my paper round for Ab Garner. 65 Mercury’s a night for 12 shillings a week. Fell off and buckled the wheel second time out and Jack charged my dad 2/- to realign the front wheel. For some unknown reason I got a clip round the ear for falling off and told to be more careful in the future! (No I didn’t need any counselling?) We had fights but only if I couldn’t run away quick enough! The curfew was when the street lights came on, unless we had homework. I am sure the sun used to shine more then and we definitely never had regular hurricanes, and a tsunami was unknown, and certainly unspellable.
We seemed to be careful what we said around our elders and treated them with respect (or else!) and what was a social worker, trauma person or care assistant? meeting to yet again do a complete revamp to the surrounds at the floodlit MUGA on the recreation ground, at a cost of £11,651. Vandalism, YET AGAIN is the main reason behind this total refurbishment. I wonder sometimes how much some of you care or even bother about what happens in the village you live in?
PCSO. 6662. PHIL WRIGHT After serving the community of Anstey for nearly 11 years PCSO Phil Wright has left the area to take up a position in Loughborough. Always willing to help and a fine example of how a policeman should be. He will be missed I am sure. Phil’s replacement will be PCSO 6093 Mitch Jarvis. All the best Phil.
THE NOOK
move on. Incidently the Nomads celebrating 70 years are 3rd in the East Midlands Counties league behind Teversal played 22 with 45pts and Selston played 21 with 44pts. Nomads Played 20 with 41pts.
SPORTS PERSONALITY Never a dull moment this year at the annual BBC sports personality, and I have to say that the winner Sir Mo Farah bought a tear to my eye. As did Denise Larrett the Unsung hero winner who came from the Hinckley and Bosworth area. Just a word about our England Cricketers out in Australia “Ouch!”
And Finally….
I can report that Anstey Parish Council has been given a considerable sum of money to find some kind of solution to the moving of bus stops around the Nook area. It seems to me it’s become too much trouble for the developers (Bloors) despite they say “Their best endeavours” so they are passing the book. However we will get our heads together and see if we can find a permanent solution.
N.Y.E. BIG NIGHTS OUT
HAPPY DAYS Thank you to the person who sent me this picture. Heady days when Anstey were winners of the Radio Leicester Quiz. Jean Carswell pressed her buzzer on the final question answered the question correctly (Winston Churchill) and we won by 10points. The £400.00 prize money went towards the planting of new trees in St Mary’s church yard. Sadly Dave Worrall is no longer with us.
Yes the place to go must be the home of Anstey Nomads F.C. on Cropston Road. If you want Vinyl Micky, live music from the Buskateers, Brian, Linda, Me and a guest appearance of Leicesters own “Elvis” (John Smith) who I am told will be riding in on Shergar and accompanied by Lord Lucan. That’s in the main clubhouse and is all ticket.

THE MONDAY CLUB CROPSTON AND THURCASTON
The year 2017 has been tinged with sadness since the loss of some of our longstanding members, but new ladies have joined over the year and we move on positively, having enjoyed a full programme, with interesting speakers and pleasant social events. On Monday 11th December, members and their guests gathered at Birstall Golf Club for our annual Christmas lunch. Our meal was of the high standard we have come to expect from the catering staff at Birstall Golf Club and was appreciated by all. In January, for the first meeting of the year, we had been entertained very well by Felicity Austin with her rousing “Story of the Music Hall”, so decided to invite her back to provide some after lunch entertainment in December. Aptly on this occasion, we heard about “An Old Fashioned Christmas”, an atmospheric mix of fact, poems, games with audience participation, songs and stories about Christmas past and the traditions that have developed over many years, including the major influence of the Victorians. We now look forward to 2018 with a new programme of speakers and events, as follows: January 8th
