Refurbishment of Public Toilet The public toilets in the Nook car park are owned by Charnwood Borough Council and leased to the Parish Council under a long term lease agreement. The Parish Council carried out a ‘usage analysis’ to find out if these toilets are a well-used facility for the village. It was found that the toilets are used 18,000 times per year and an obvious benefit to the village. The toilets have unfortunately fallen into a bad state of repair, the parish council is investing to bring this well used facility to an acceptable standard and a refurbishment project is due to start on the 7th January 2019. It is expected that the work will take 2 – 3 weeks. During this time the toilets will be closed and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Thank you from your new Borough Councillor, Cllr Paul Baines The Anstey By-Election took place on Thursday 20th December and I am delighted to have been elected to Charnwood Borough Council to represent Anstey. I would like to thank the 1,036 people who took the time to vote in the election, either by submitting their postal votes or by attending the polling station at Jubilee Hall. Due to the Christmas period I will not be fully set up with my email address at Charnwood until the new year and I will then share my contact details with you all. During my campaign, it was a pleasure to meet so many residents from the village who stopped and had a chat with me. I found it very helpful to hear their views and issues in Anstey and was also heartened to hear their words of support. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my whole Conservative team in Anstey for their support and help and I would like to give a special thank you to my agent, Paul Taylor, for organising a clean and effective campaign to get across our important messages on our plans for Anstey in the future. I am really looking forward to working with Cllr Deborah Taylor to represent everyone in Anstey. We will be working very closely together. Through this joint working, we can avoid duplication of work which should then enable us to concentrate on making sure Anstey is even better represented at Charnwood Borough Council meetings and more importantly so that we can tackle local issues within the village quickly and effectively. Thank you again to all the residents who showed their support and voted for me. For those residents who didn’t vote for me, I’ll do my best to earn your trust. Cllr Paul Baines

THE MONDAY CLUB CROPSTON AND THURCASTON

For our final gathering of 2018 on Monday 3rd December, once again members and their guests enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch at Birstall Golf Club. Having appreciated their musical performance with their hand-turned fair organs in 2016, we invited Margaret and Eric Dilks to return on this occasion to join us for lunch and to provide some seasonal music for our after lunch entertainment. This time they just brought one organ and Margaret gave a comprehensive description of how it worked, as well as the history and origins of fair organs, including the tradition of the “organ grinder’s monkey”. Margaret also explained that she and Eric are long-time supporters of the Heart Link charity, which is based at Glenfield Hospital, and take their fair organ to various fundraising events for the charity. With guidance from Margaret, two guests were delighted to take the opportunity to try operating the organ. We held our traditional Christmas raffle which raised the grand sum of £72. Eric Dilks won the wine selection prize and asked that it be auctioned and the proceeds be donated to Heart Link – this achieved £25 and, after unanimous agreement by the Club members, the £72 was added to the £25, making a total of £97 to be given to Heart Link.

We are primarily a ladies social group and, during 2018, our membership remained stable, with our programme of speakers and social events attracting several male and female visitors, throughout the year. Looking ahead to 2019, our planned programme is as follows: January 14th Speaker: Derek Holloway – “The Beauty of Moorcroft” February 11th Annual General Meeting & in-house entertainment March 11th Speaker: Sandra Moore – “May Clements’ War” April 8th Speaker: Penny Hodgson – “Rickshaws & Chopsticks” May 13th Annual Outing – to be arranged June 10th Speaker: Wendy Martin “Mountains & Midges – Walking the West Highland Way” July 8th Annual Strawberry Cream Tea – to be arranged

August 12th Speaker: from Benefits’ Advice & Advocacy Service September 9th Speaker: Joyce Godfrey – “The Magic of the Ballroom” Plus Harvest Bring & Buy – Sale of Produce October 14th Speaker: Anna Stasinska “There’s more to tea than a bag in a mug!” November 11th Speaker: Roy Wood “How to enjoy a Healthy & Wealthy Retirement” December Annual Christmas Lunch – to be arranged & date confirmed Meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of the month (unless otherwise notified) in the Schoolroom at the rear of Cropston Evangelical Free Church, Station Road, Cropston, from 2.15pm to 4.15pm. Annual subscriptions are due in January and remain at £12 for 2019. Members’ monthly entrance fee is £2 per person and visitors are charged £3 per meeting. New members and visitors will be assured of a warm welcome.

Choose to Move in 2019 Residents are being encouraged to Choose to Move and become more active in 2019. Charnwood Borough Council’s Choose to Move is a 10-week physical activity programme which offers weekly weigh-ins and exercise classes for anyone looking for a healthy way to kick-start the new year. The programme starts on Tuesday January 22, 2019 at Charnwood College, Loughborough and will be held every week between 7pm-8.30pm. Cllr Deborah Taylor, the Council’s lead member for communities, safety and wellbeing said: “The Choose to Move programme offers residents the opportunity to get active in a friendly and welcoming environment. “We’re committed to helping resident’s live healthier lifestyles, so I would encourage anyone looking to get more active to sign up for the programme.” The weigh-in sessions are optional and will take place between 7-7.30pm. The exercise classes are suitable for all fitness levels and will take place indoors from 7.30-8.30pm. The 10-week programme costs £25 and everyone who attends eight or more exercise sessions will be entered into a draw for a chance to win a 12 month gym membership with Fusion, usually worth around £300. Thank you from Glyn McAllister, Anstey Labour Party by-election candidate. I'd like to take the opportunity to thank all those who took the time to vote for me in the recent Charnwood Borough Council by-election following the sad death of my old friend John Sutherington. Unfortunately I narrowly lost the election by only 16 votes. Not surprisingly there was a low turnout on the dark and damp December day, with only just over one thousand electors, (18.84%), taking the time to vote. I know that for many that did vote for me it was the first time they had ever voted for a Labour candidate, but did so as they wanted to send me to represent them at Charnwood Council.

S

Not surprisingly, I'm disappointed to have lost so narrowly as I had hoped to continue the fantastic work that John did in representing Anstey. Sadly this isn't to be this time around. I'm now looking forward to the new year and to continuing my work as a Parish Councillor for the benefit of all in the village. 04/12/2018 11:35 Page 44 Thanks again. I hope that you and yours have a healthy and happy new year.

David Snartt Reports... Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate

May I wish everyone a Happy and Peaceful New Year.

Anstey By-Election Congratulations to Paul Baines who was successful in the Anstey By-Election which took place on the 20th December 2018. I look forward to working with Paul at Charnwood Borough Council. I was pleased to see on his election leaflets some of the items that I am interested in, especially improving air quality and making sure we resist housing development that does not conform to the Local Development Plan, ensuring that the necessary infrastructure is provided on all planning development.

New Planning Applications I have asked that the planning application P/18/2140/2 for the demolition of the existing dwelling at 440 Bradgate Road, Newtown Linford and the erection of 3 detached dwellings and alterations to vehicular access to be determined by a Planning Committee at Charnwood Borough Council. I gave the reasons for this as: The effect of the proposed development on the character and settlement pattern of the area and the proposal is not in a sustainable location. A previous planning application adjacent to this site for the construction of a bungalow and detached garage was refused planning permission by the Local Planning Authority and dismissed on appeal by a Government Inspector. I have also asked that a planning application P/18/2321/2 for the erection of two 3 storey dwellings including associated access and formation of car parking at 16 Windmill Rise, Woodhouse Eaves be determined by a Planning Committee. I have given the reasons for this proposal as: The 3 storey dwellings may

dominate the adjacent properties which are mostly bungalows: Privacy of near neighbours compromised: Local need is for smaller properties such as bungalows and the impact on highway safety. I will keep you informed on progress as these two applications go through the planning process. If you need more detail this can be found under the planning application numbers on the Charnwood Borough Council website.

Bradgate Park Car Parking After receiving information from a local resident asking for my help about an issue that had occurred when parking her vehicle in the Bradgate Park car park. The resident had been issued with a £95 parking ticket. I did write to the letter pages of the local press to alert visitors to the circumstances that had occurred so that more people visiting Bradgate would be aware of this situation and why a £95 penalty ticket was issued. The Trust have now employed a company to enforce parking charges. I do not have issues with charging for parking when visiting Bradgate, albeit, I do have concerns about only having an all-day parking tariff, which is seen by many visitors to be unfair when only visiting for a short time. In my view, this has been the root cause in the escalation of vehicles parking on the highway outside the car parks provided by the Trust. I asked the company issuing the £95 ticket for help, when in my opinion, this resident made a genuine mistake entering her own car registration number when driving her husband’s car. Both cars were registered at the same address. After many e-mail exchanges and only receiving standard emails from the company employed by the Trust, I decided to alert the Trust for help. The

response I received was not what I expected: They quite accept that this may have been an “honest mistakeâ€? but then again it may not, going on to say they support the decision made by the company to issue the ÂŁ95 ticket. After more e-mails from myself to the company issuing the parking ticket they finally cancelled the charge. Please make sure if you do use the car parks provided by the Trust, you comply with the information supplied on the notices, especially that you enter the correct registration number of your vehicle. I found it most difficult to communicate with the company enforcing parking charges on behalf of the Bradgate Park Trust.

Police and Crime Commissioner’s Survey I have received information from Leicestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Lord Willy Bach about the launch of a consultation about the budget for 2019-2020. The consultation can be found at www.leics.pcc. police/Have-Your-Say/Consultations. The consultation will close at 5pm on Friday 11th January 2019. I was asked to pass this information on, so that the Commissioner has a truly representative viewpoint when setting his budget for the coming year. I was pleased to see that the Commissioner has stated that: my first priority is to sustain and improve visible Neighbourhood Policing. I know from many discussions with local residents this is one of the main concerns in our rural areas. Therefore, I am pleased to see this area of policing is being prioritised. I would be grateful if residents would contribute to this consultation so that the Commissioner has a good representation of views from this rural area of Leicestershire. If you need to contact me on any issues, please write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. LE6 0HH e-mail cllr.david.snartt@charnwood.gov.uk or telephone 01530 244804.

Deborah Taylor... Latest News Borough Councillor for Anstey & County Councillor for Bradgate Division 6 Geary Close, Anstey LE7 7LW - Tel: 0116 2350126 Email: Cllr.Deborah.Taylor@charnwood.gov.uk & Deborah.Taylor@leics.gov.uk Facebook: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor

I hope you managed to have some quality time off to enjoy with family and friends over the festive period. My thoughts were also with those people alone at this time of year. Some special thanks, as always, goes to those people working in frontline services for their dedication and hard work during this time of year. I was very busy leading up to Christmas with meetings and several issues to deal with locally along with the Anstey by-election. I enjoyed being out and about chatting to residents for the election campaign and it was wonderful to see all the efforts residents had gone to with decorating their houses, I really enjoyed seeing all the festive lights. I was away in Manchester for the Anstey Christmas Gala, but I understand that it went well and was busy. Cllr Paul Baines and Ed Argar MP did attend and had an enjoyable afternoon. I did pop into Anstey Community Library the following week to see Father Christmas and speak to the volunteers working hard as usual. I had a catch up with the Chairman, Phil Knight, at the library, there is more news on the library further on in my report. On Wednesday 28th November I attended the Virtual School Conference at the NSPCC National Training Centre at Beaumont Leys. The Virtual School is provided by Leicestershire County Council (LCC) and exists to improve the education of children in care by supporting children, schools, carers and social workers to help young people to do their best to support all our children in care. It was an excellent day and I learnt so much about ‘Attachment Awareness’ and how this can affect the development of babies and young children if they do not build up attachment with their primary carer. On Monday 3rd December I opened the Charnwood Sports Awards in my role as Cabinet Lead Member for Communities for Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) and there are further details later in this report. On Thursday 6th December, in my role as Cabinet Support Member for Children and Families (LCC) I was invited to lunch by Lord Bach, the Police and Crime Commissioner. Also invited was Simon Cole the Chief Constable, Jane Moore the Director of Children and Families and Baroness Newlove who is the Victims Commissioner. Baroness Newlove was in Leicester for the day to promote the work she does for victims of crime. Baroness Newlove’s husband, Garry Newlove, was murdered in August 2007 in Warrington, Cheshire, after confronting a

12

gang of drunken youths who were vandalising her car. Since then she has worked tirelessly to get more support for victims. She is a lovely lady and I thoroughly enjoyed talking to her over lunch about what more needs to be done for victims of crime. I thought my leaflet delivering was over until the elections next May but on Friday 28th December we were out again delivering leaflets on behalf of Anstey Parish Council on the Groby Road Estate in Anstey. The leaflets were to advertise the Public Art Consultation and Free Workshop on Thursday 24th January 2019 between 10.30am – 12.30pm to consider ideas for the new public art for the Groby Road Estate being held at Jubilee Hall. There will be an opportunity to have a go at making mosaics for yourself to keep. If you would like to attend, please contact the Parish office by Monday 21st January 2019 on tel: 0116 236 2646.

Cllr Mr Ivan Ould OBE I was delighted to hear that the Cabinet Lead Member for Children and Families at LCC has been recognised in the New Year Honours List. Cllr Ould has worked tirelessly, not only for the children of Leicestershire but also nationally and has been awarded an OBE. I am Cllr Ould’s Cabinet Support Member and it is an honour to work beside Cllr Ould. I would like to add my congratulations to him on this achievement.

Anstey By-Election I am extremely delighted that Paul Baines has been elected to represent Anstey at Charnwood Borough Council following the by-election held on 20th December 2018. Thank you to all the residents who made the effort to come out and vote or send in their postal vote forms during the lead up to the Christmas period. By-elections normally have a low turnout, I was hoping for at least 20% of the electorate but we managed 18.84%. It was a difficult by-election due to the reason it was held and a difficult time of year. This result is a real positive for Anstey, as Paul and myself will be able to work closely together. We will be far more effective and will stop any duplication of work as we can share the workload and concentrate on the local issues important to Anstey. It will take a while for Paul to be up and running with all his equipment and getting his email address working, but we are already discussing the way forward for the issues we highlighted that we will be tackling in the village. Thank you to the whole Conservative team for their support and efforts for the clean and organised campaign they undertook.

Charnwood Sports Awards I was honoured to open the tenth annual Charnwood Sports Awards as Lead Member. The awards ceremony, organised by Charnwood Borough Council, honoured over 35 shortlisted individuals and groups at Burleigh Court, Loughborough on Monday 3rd December. I was also very honoured to share a table for the evening with the late Cllr John’s Sutherington’s son and daughter, Nikki and Gemma. They were both there to present the award for the Club of the Year, which has been renamed ‘Cllr John Sutherington Club of the Year’ after John, who was well known for his commitment to the community and passion for sport. Loughborough Town Swimming Club were crowned the winners. The Joe Humphries Special Recognition award was also launched this year to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the sports awards and recognises inspirational people who have made outstanding achievements in the face of adversity. Joe Humphries died of Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS). Joe’s father was also on my table to present this award and I had a lovely chat with him. He was very pleased when I informed him that I had fund raised and purchased a defibrillator for Anstey a couple of years ago. MOVE Charity, founded by Gemma Hillier-Moses, won the new Joe Humphries Special Recognition award. Through physical activity and sport, the charity supports children and young people living with and beyond cancer. It was an emotional night and I was especially pleased that John’s family shared their emotion with us all. Special thanks to this year’s event sponsors: Sports Traider, Loughborough College, Team Charnwood, Hit the Street, Loughborough University, Fusion Lifestyle, Leicestershire and Rutland Sport, Active Charnwood Alliance, Idverde, Colton Packaging and Joe Humphries Memorial Trust. The sponsors paid for the whole evening including the meal for all winners and runner ups and was at no cost to CBC.

Rough Sleepers An annual count to establish the number of rough sleepers in Charnwood has been carried out by the Borough Council with the support of local partner agencies. Four teams

t: 0800 6446 150 • e: yourlocal@openboxpromotions.co.uk • w: www.openboxpromotions.co.uk

checked over 50 locations across the borough in the early hours of Wednesday 21st November 2018. Three people were found during this operation. Two people accepted the offers of accommodation for the night and one person unfortunately, declined the offer of support. The count is to establish a picture of the number of rough sleepers within the borough on a typical night and follows guidelines set by Homeless Link, a charity which works with organisations involved in supporting homeless people. The Council is required by the government to provide either an estimate of the number of rough sleepers in the borough or carry out an actual count. The findings from the count contribute towards building a national picture of the rough sleeping occurring in the UK.

Unitary Status Following the LCC’s Cabinet decision in October 2018 to start an engagement and scrutiny process on outline proposals for the development of a unitary structure the Leader of LCC received a copy of a private and confidential letter from MPs, which was copied to the District Council Leaders. That letter asked the Leader to stop any work on reorganisation and made the same request of the District Council Leaders. The Leader, having discussed this with his Group, believes the best way forward is to ask the Chief Executive to commission a business case that will flesh out in detail on what a unitary structure for Leicestershire will look like in the context of a clear vision, what powers it will have and how it will operate. Once that business case is completed, that will go back to the Scrutiny Commission and the cross party working group for further consideration, before coming back to Cabinet and then to Full Council at some point for final approval. This will then become the settled will of the County Council, should it be approved. This process is likely to be completed in the spring time next year and the business case will be produced within current resources. The business plan will then sit on the shelf until an opportunity arises for Leicestershire to look at Unitary Status.

Impower Report Leicestershire County Council has been named the most productive council in the country for the second year in a row. The council retained the top spot in the 2018 table compiled by consultancy firm IMPOWER. The list comprises of 150 councils’ and measures value for money and to what degree each pound spent is improving lives. IMPOWER compares the 150 councils in England and looks at a range of areas including overall performance, older people, housing and homelessness and children’s social care. This is a great achievement as we are one of the lowest funded councils in the Country.

Business Rates Major plans to unlock an extra £14m for public services across Leicester and Leicestershire have been given the thumbs up. Secretary of State James Brokenshire announced that the area was one of 15 chosen to take part in a national Government pilot. The money, generated from business rates, will be used by 10 organisations to manage growing demand for children’s social care and homelessness support, provide infrastructure for new homes and businesses and invest in city and town centres. Nick Rushton, leader of Leicestershire County Council, the lead authority for the bid welcomed the announcement and said: “This is great news. It generates vital funds for us to spend here in Leicester and Leicestershire and I’d like to thank Neil O’Brien and the other Leicestershire MPs for their support”. Currently, 50% of business rates collected by councils must be paid to the treasury but under the national pilot, areas can spend 75% of new rates locally, releasing more funds. Plans are still being finalised, but the money is set to contribute to: ➢ Reducing demand on children’s social care by investing in services to avoid children entering care, stabilise familybased placements and support young people to live more independently ➢ Developing online and re-designing services - to improve efficiency and free up money to be spent on front line services

Anstey Community Library and Sure Start Centre As you are all probably aware the Sure Start Centre, housed within Anstey Community Library is due to close in April 2019. This is following the decision by LCC to review how they will deliver services to families and young people. Children's Centres are local centres that offer help and support to families with babies and children from pregnancy until they go to school. Midwives, Health Visitors and other staff are often on hand in the centres to provide help and guidance to support children. The new service will be the Family Wellbeing Service, looking after children from 0 -19 years old. This will bring together four services into one service to be more cost effective. The four services are: ➢ Supporting Leicestershire Families (SLF) ➢ Children’s Centres ➢ Youth Offending Service (YOS) ➢ Early Help Information, Support and Assessment (EHISA). The Sure Start Centre in Anstey costs £5,300 a year to run and is open for 8 hours a week. There is a health clinic run once a week and volunteer led sessions. There were 137 targeted children and families helped during the past year and it is the least used centre in Charnwood. Whilst I am disappointed that the building will close, all the frontline services will remain. All families will be supported in their own homes locally by professionals who will work with the whole family rather than just the individual child. This has been proven to have a far greater impact. No families in Anstey or surrounding villages will be left without the support they require but this will no longer be continued on next page

delivered in a building but locally in their own homes. Anstey Community Library relies on the rental income from the Sure Start Centre to run the library. Following discussions that I have had at County Hall, I am pleased to report that it has been agreed that the rental income received by the library from Sure Start will continue to be paid to the library for a further 3 years, from library services funding. This secures the library’s future and the library committee will be working hard to make sure the space vacated by Sure Start is put to good use for the community.

The Nook, Anstey Following the latest remedial works in the vicinity of the traffic signals, there were issues found with some of the traffic detection equipment. This meant that the contractors were unable to fully optimise the operation of the traffic signals. I have been assured however, that the contractors have been requested that the remaining works are completed as soon as possible.

If you do need planning permission CBC also offer a pre-application advice service so that you can discuss your proposal with a planning officer before submitting a planning application. Tip of the Month Did you know‌

‌‌planning permission is the formal permission from Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) for the development of land, property or any other building project. Some projects may not require planning permission but be aware that if you begin a project without legally obtaining planning permission and it turns out you do need it, this could result in enforcement action being taken, and you could end up with a fine and/or a criminal conviction. You may also require planning permission to change the use of land or buildings from one use to another. There are some cases where you may not need to apply for planning permission, providing the works meet certain limits and conditions. This is known as permitted development. However, if you need to confirm that your proposal does not require planning permission you will need to apply for a Lawful Development Certificate.

Listed buildings and conservation areas If your proposed works are to a Listed Building, you will almost certainly need Listed Building Consent, as well as any relevant planning permission or building regulations approval. You can find out whether your building is listed using CBC website. There are also more restricted planning controls for some works in conservation areas. You can find out whether your property is in a conservation area using CBC website. For further information please visit the CBC’s website at: https://www.charnwood.gov.uk /pages/planning_applications or contact by telephone on: 01509 634570.

If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help.

JHMT helps local Scouts to become heartsafe A LOCAL heart charity is teaming up with the local Scouts to help make sure Scouting events and activities are ‘heartsafe’. Rothley-based charity the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT), which raises awareness of sudden heart deaths like SADS (sudden arrhythmic death syndrome), has been helping Charnwood Scouts to become heartsafe by offering specialist life-saving training in CPR and defibrillator familiarisation.

“Leaders who supervise the expedition part of the D of E award have to take many things into consideration including the physical abilities and health needs of the young people. This year during preparations it was identified that we should have a defibrillator in the event of an emergency. “Whilst trying to find a supplier for our own defibrillator, we came across the JHMT. After making contact with them we purchased two defibrillators. “Also with the support of the JHMT, Charnwood Scouts are becoming heartsafe. As well as the CPR training our leaders take part in, the JHMT has helped us with training in how to use a defib, and we are now working with the JHMT to develop a badge reflecting this, which our scouts will be able to achieve.”

With the support of the JHMT, CPR and defibrillator training will be made available to more than 200 adults, who will pass on the skills they learn to more than 1,000 young people in Scouting in Charnwood. And the Charnwood Scouts have recently bought two new defibrillators – one which has been installed at the local campsite Oaks in Charnwood, and one mobile defib which will be used for expeditions and events. Dr Mike Ferguson from the JHMT said: “It’s great news that the Charnwood Scouts are becoming heartsafe, and that they are developing a badge for those Scouts who will have had CPR training and defibrillator familiarisation.

“We want to make sure as many young people as possible have these life-saving skills, so that it becomes the norm to have them. We’re delighted to offer the training that will help them to achieve this.” Steve Humphries from the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust said: “We are proud to be working in collaboration with Charnwood Scouts to help create a heartsafe environment. “Hundreds of young people and volunteers take part in a diverse range of learning and recreational activities as part of Scouting. It’s vitally important that this fantastic worldwide movement is equipped to deal with a cardiac emergency. “As we know, sudden cardiac arrest – including undiagnosed heart conditions like SADS – can strike fit and healthy young people without any warning. Having more people including young cubs, scouts, guides and leaders with CPR and defib skills can be the difference between life and death. Teamwork saves lives.’ As a result of the fantastic work between the JHMT and Charnwood Scouts, the rest of Leicestershire Scouts are getting defibs installed across their remaining five campsites and are looking at how to introduce these essential skills for life to more of their adults and young people. To find out more about the work of the JHMT and how you could get free CPR training for your club or community group, visit jhmt.org.uk

Through their association with the JHMT, the Scouts were able to buy the defibs at a competitive rate. An external cabinet for the campsite defib was donated by the JHMT. Paul Smith from Charnwood Scouts said: “As part of Scouting, we offer opportunities to young people in Charnwood, which provide them with skills for life, including the Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) award.

GRANTS FOR LOCAL CAUSES Anstey Town Charity trustees will be holding their annual grants meeting in April next year to distribute funds to local charities and groups Applicants must be based in the village or serve the community of Anstey. These include non profit organisations, voluntary groups, youth organisations, sports clubs, faith and community groups. The Charity also has the discretion to award grants to individuals who may require support for educational or special needs projects. The Trustees require an independently up to date verified or audited statement of accounts. It is also helpful if applicants can indicate what activity, age group, equipment or project the grant is needed for and an approximate costing. They are also interested to know how many Anstey residents will benefit from the grants and are required to include a contact name and address and telephone number with their applications. In 2018 £1,860 was awarded to seven local groups and organisations. During the last 12 years the Charity has awarded over £30,000 to over 30 local applicants. Applications should be sent by the 31st of January 2019 to Anstey Town Charity, Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey LE7 7AY. For further details ring Vicky Ball 2125315 We Need Your Help. The charity, under the terms of its scheme laid down by the Charity Commission, cannot invest any of its income, this must be given to the community of Anstey. However the Anstey Town Charity is able to invest grants and donations with the Charities Investment Fund. With increasing demands for financial support the nine unpaid Trustees are anxious to attract this kind of funding from local bodies and individuals, perhaps in memory of a loved one or in appreciation of the work done by the Charity on behalf the village. They are very grateful for the support they receive from the Anstey Parish Council and the Gala Committee but hope that groups who have benefitted from their grants may feel able to make donations to the Anstey Town Charity to enhance their work in the local community.

Anstey Rugby Club will be 40 next year Did you know that Anstey RFC started life in 1980 playing their first game against West Leicester, a club sadly not around anymore? Over the intervening years we have seen our club grow to the extent of having four senior teams out in the mid 1990s as well as an extensive mini and junior section catering for all age groups from under 8s to under 13s. At the same time other amateur clubs throughout the county were enjoying a buoyant time. As we head into 2019 many of the clubs we used to regularly play against have long since disappeared or amalgamated with other clubs. Those that are still around that used to field four, five or six teams now only field one or two. So the fact that your local village rugby club, Anstey RFC is only fielding one side nowadays is not that unusual. The fantastic news is that we are still here and just a year away from celebrating 40 years of village rugby in Anstey. Anstey is now a far larger village than it was in 1980, so there must be potential for building our club back up for the 2019/20 season fielding more regular teams. As well as playing, the positive social life that goes with Rugby Union is well known. As a club we want to look outside our membership for helping to raise our profile and ensure we thrive in the years to come. Can you help? - If so give me call on 07720 451 455 or come to our next committee meeting at 8pm in the Coach and Horses on the first Wednesday of every month. Your Village Club, Anstey RFC needs YOU. Recent Matches played: On 1st December with the help of a couple of Birstall players, Anstey played at Aylestone St. James where the final score was Jimmies 43, Anstey 19. We had a full squad for the Home game v Aylestone Athletic on 24th November when out visitors called off at the last minute. The Christmas Club Social on Saturday 22nd December where the theme was Christmas Jumpers took place starting at the Coach and Horses and followed on with a party of 12 club members touring a number of city centre establishments until the early hours. Our Club Coach, Matt Belcher, organises regular training sessions every Wednesday starting at 6.30pm under floodlights at our ground adjacent to the Martin High School on Link Road. All players both new or regular, experienced or total novices, fit or unfit, old or young are all welcome. Matches are on Saturdays kicking off at 2:15pm, until March when they revert to the traditional 3pm kick-off time. Details for all the club officials are on the Anstey RFC noticeboard inside our clubhouse at The Coach and Horses pub in the Nook in Anstey. Or call our Captain Liam Curtis on 07727 118362 Or visit www.pitchhero.com/clubs/anstey Article by Chris Apperley

Anstey WI

FILM PRESENTATIONS

Anstey WI celebrated Christmas by holding a party where they were entertained by the talented After Eight Quartet, who sing close harmony. They had a varied repertoire, including songs made famous by ELO and Brenda Lee. A favourite was an amusing synopsis of Mozart’s opera “The Magic Flute” set to “Eine Kleine Nachtmuzik.” These songs were interspersed with groan-inducing cracker jokes, but we still laughed.

Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council “The Greatest Showman” in December was a big and bold film and Barnum’s personality was exuberant. We were enchanted by the sweet songs of Jenny Lind and we definitely returned home feeling joyful.

Everyone was greeted by Santa’s elf, who disappeared as we were preparing to start supper, bringing with her Santa himself. He distributed presents to those who had been good, or claimed they had, while we did our best to eat all the varied spread. We failed! A lot of food went back home to be enjoyed later.

"Edie" will be shown on January 11th and lasts 102 minutes. Having been advised to go into a residential home by her daughter, the 85 year old Edie decides to climb Scotland's remotest mountain instead. The stalwart Sheila Hancock, who is the same age as her character, sublimely plays this determined widow, to fulfil her dream. Our New Year film is set against the stunning backdrop of the Scottish Highlands.

It was a most enjoyable evening. Next year’s programme at 7.30pm in the Jubilee Hall on the 2nd Wednesday of each month will start on 9th January, when Lucy Rossa will tell us about Aromatherapy. Visitors would be most welcome.

"Mamma Mia-Here We Go Again" will be shown on February 8th. It lasts 114 minutes. In this sequel to the popular musical comedy, Sophie prepares for the opening of the Hotel Bella Donna on a beautiful Greek island. However, her husband is working in New York with her father, played by Pierce Brosnan. Meryl Streep, Cher and Colin Firth feature in this entertaining and joyful performance.
