Crime Prevention - We have seen an increase in burglaries up to the festive period this month so we have provided the below advice. Burglars don’t want to be seen or heard and if they think they’ll be noticed by a neighbour or passer-by, they'll probably move on. Here's some advice on helping keep burglars out by giving them no hiding places. Keep it visible - You’d think that it would be best to make a property less visible from the street, and to keep it hidden from prying eyes behind overgrown bushes, trees, high fences or walls. In reality, all that this serves to do is make it easier for a burglar to get close to a home unnoticed, and provide somewhere to hide while carrying out a burglary or theft from the property. 1. Lower fences at the front around one-metre high are preferable to high fences as they allow for a clear view over the top and don’t provide cover for anyone wishing to hide. 2. At the rear and sides, taller fencing is recommended to prevent easy access. 3. Trellis, thorny plants, or a suitable anti-climb topping such as plastic spikes make it difficult for anyone climbing over a fence or gate.

2019 has been another good year for the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club. We saw a steady increase in membership and the 2019 programme of events was full, varied, good quality, and very good value for money. In 2019 we held nine Club nights at the Thurcaston village hall and a summer programme that included a visit to Barkby Hall, an outing to the RHS Malvern Spring Show, and an autumn outing to Trentham Gardens. We held our 36th Annual Show at the Richard Hill Primary School. The Show is open to everyone and brings together not only Club members but like-minded gardening folk from far and wide. It’s a day of fun and gentle competitiveness, we would love to see you in September 2020 at our 37th Show. Have a go, you will enjoy it enormously. Show schedules are widely available from early spring. We have confidence that the programme we have put together for 2020 will maintain the high standard of events we have offered in recent years. We start the year on Wednesday 8 January with a talk on ‘Birds, Butterflies and Bees’ with Janette Merilion. Janette is an experienced horticultural speaker, lecturer and historian with a successful garden design business. In this illustrated talk, Janette will give all the information you need to plant up your garden to encourage wildlife to visit. Everything from blackbirds to hoverflies and butterflies to hedgehogs. She will also have a selection of plants to sell. Other talks include ‘Year-round colour in the garden’, ‘The Social History of the Allotment’, and ‘Growing Rare and Unusual Plants’. We also have outings to Waterperry Gardens nr Oxford and to the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park. We are confident there will be something for everyone.

Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of particular interest to couples who have come together and have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Kornerstone Wealth Protection and Legal services will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

Report from Anstey Parish Council Christmas Light Competition It’s the first year that the Parish Council have had a Christmas Lights Competition and judging them was no mean feat. A team of parish councillors drove around all the streets in the village, feeling very festive, admiring the lights and trying to decide which were, in our opinion, the best. Two and a half hours and twenty miles later, we reached a unanimous decision. Many thanks to all who have taken time and effort to put lights on their houses and help to make the village look so festive. I’m sorry you all couldn’t win! Vicky Ball, Chairman of the Events Committee.

Wishing all our parishioners a very happy New Year. - This year we look forward to working along-side you to provide a stronger community in Anstey and incorporating your ideas within community projects. Community Tree Planting A big thank you to all who came along and supported the community tree planting at Link Road Playing Field at the end of November. A total of 100 trees were planted, in under an hour. The aim is to reinforce the existing small wooded area. Our thanks is extended to the Woodland Trust for providing the Trees and Emma Bown, Anstey’s Tree Warden for leading the event. We hope to complete more of these community planting days.

Party held on the 19th December was a thoroughly enjoyable event. The Woolden Hill Choir and the U3A Choir entertained a hall of residents who are aged 90 or above. The Mayor of Charnwood Councillor Brenda Seaton attended the event to give out Christmas cards and a wish all a Happy Christmas

In my report last month, I referred to the reduction in the number of journeys in the new timetable for the 120 bus service which again is the only service travelling through Newtown Linford. I understand tweaks have been made to the new timetable due to requests at the engagement events. This service is now due to operate from mid-February.

David Snartt Reports... Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate

May I wish you all a Happy New Year. Planning Appeal Decision I was delighted to receive the news from the Planning Inspectorate on Christmas Eve about the Inspector’s decision to dismiss the appeal to develop up to 50 dwelling on land adjacent to Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves. An early Christmas present! I note in the decision notice, the main issues outlined by the Inspector were: ‘Whether the proposal would provide a suitable location for housing, having regard to local and national policy and guidance’ and ‘the effect of the proposal on the character and appearance of the area , including landscape impact, the effect on the setting of the locally listed building at 155 Maplewell Road, and the effect on the Woodhouse Eaves Conservation Area’. In my view, reading through the decision notice, the outcome relied heavily on policy within the Charnwood Local Plan, Core Strategy, noting the Inspector found that the spatial strategy set out in policy CS1 is not out of date. Policy CS1 is most important in that it sets out the overall principles of the spatial strategy and the criteria for assessing the compliance of proposals in each tier of the hierarchy. Remembering that Woodhouse Eaves is categorised under policy CS1 as one of twelve ‘Other Settlements’ in the fourth tier of the hierarchy. These settlements generally do not have access to a good range of services or facilities and rely largely on the private car for their day-to-day needs. I also noted that the Inspector made reference to the Borough Council’s ability to demonstrate a five year supply of deliverable housing land. This was one of the areas I touched on in my submission to the Inspectorate.

be viewed on the Charnwood Borough Council’s planning website under appeals search, reference P/18/0715/2.

authority

May I take the opportunity to thank all the people involved in the decision making process, expressing your views right from the first meeting to attending the appeal hearing in the Village Hall on a wet October day. I was so pleased to see so many people attending, making it worth while having the hearing at a local venue.

Local Bus Services I have been corresponding with residents about the issues concerning a reduction in Public Transport. The latest to come to my attention is the proposed large reduction in the 154 service operated by Centrebus between Leicester and Loughborough. This is the only service for villages on the route, including within my Council Ward Woodhouse Eaves and Woodhouse. Residents have pointed out to me how they will be affected if this proposed reduction was carried out. These include: attending hospital appointments and courses of treatment over a long period of time, the only means of transport to services outside the village and the environmental impact of discouraging people from using public transport. I understand Centrebus have notified Leicestershire County Council that they intend to withdraw most of the Monday to Friday journeys with effect from 26th January. I have been in touch with the County Council officers who are currently assessing the full impact of these changes, they will provide further information at bus stops and on the ‘Choose How You Move’ website, once the detail is available. Additionally they will provide an update to Parishes and bus passengers who have made enquiries.

I have real concerns about the proposed reductions in services that are taking place, especially the impact this will have on the elderly, who rely heavily on public transport to access services outside their villages. I will continue to put the case for maintaining a viable bus service to the villages I represent.

Road Closure I have had concerns raised about the road closure between Woodhouse Parish and Swithland, which is due to start early January. This coming after the recent two month closure. I understand this is having a detrimental effect on local businesses within my Council Ward, especially village shops and public houses, who have seen a significant reduction in business throughout the previous closure. I understood from correspondence with officers at the County Council, any further works in this area would be controlled by traffic lights, therefore keeping the road open to traffic. I have now asked for more information as to why this road needs to be closed again, so soon after the recent closure? In my view, this will again cause inconvenience and loss of business to the local and business community.

Drainage I have received concerns about the problems of surface water on the Main Street, Newtown Linford, due to blocked drains/gullies along certain parts of the street. I have received information from the County Council that their operatives will be attending on Friday 10th and Monday 12th January to carry out jetting and CCTV investigation works across the full length of Main Street.

The Charnwood Gardener New Year, New You - Hopes, Dreams and Gardening

After the inevitable excesses of the festive period, January offers a welcome chance to pause and reset. This is reflected in the garden – a great stillness now falls over the bare stems and frost-kissed soil. The garden lies dormant, dreaming of the year to come, and so do we. But amid all the self-examination and earnest resolutions, we can often be a little too optimistic with our promises to ourselves. Perhaps it’s important to recognise who we really are and what we’re realistically capable of in the year to come - otherwise we set ourselves up for failure. Does a pear tree dream of bearing oranges? Or does it hope to produce its very best crop of pears? Pseudo-psychological rambling aside, January is the perfect time for garden planning. Get your notebook out and start those lists. Do you want lots more colour in the garden, perhaps by trying new annuals from seed? Do you want to grow more healthy fruit and veg for you and the family to enjoy? Maybe this is year you dig a pond! Whatever the case, January’s harvest is one of bountiful plans and schemes. JANUARY TIP: If you do venture outside this month, it’s not too late to plant Allium bulbs. There are many varieties available in all shapes and sizes, but you can’t go wrong with Purple Sensation and White Everest. Both bear a single ball-shaped flower (in purple and white respectively) that can fit easily into an established border for some architectural height in early summer. Plant in groups of three or five, or space evenly in a more formal border. Wait for a day when the ground isn’t frozen and plant at a depth about four times the diameter of the bulb.

Residents save Thurcaston an average of £269 on Cropston Good energy bills Neighbours Scheme

Residents who signed up to the Charnwood big Switch have saved an average of £269 a year on their energy bills with the first auction.

Earlier this year the borough council introduced ‘Charnwood Big Switch’ a collective switching scheme to help residents get a better deal and change energy suppliers with ease. Registrations for the next auction are now open and more residents are being encouraged to sign up for a chance to see how much money they could save on their energy bills. Alison Simmons, head of strategic and private sector housing said: “The council are committed to helping residents and we are really pleased with the amount of money residents saved through the first auction. “Switching your energy suppliers can be daunting for some residents and we’re hoping Charnwood Big Switch will make the process easier for residents and give them the confidence to switch and save money on their bills. “I would encourage residents to register with the scheme, so they are able to see if they are getting a better deal before deciding to switch.” The scheme is delivered by the Council and iChoosr, an independent specialist provider in collective energy switching. Collective switching gives people the opportunity to group together and pay less for their energy. Residents can switch electric or dual fuel and can choose to have paper bills or to manage their accounts online. iChoosr hold three auctions a year and energy suppliers compete to provide the lowest priced tariff in the auction. It is free for residents to register their interest and registrations for the second auction are now open. The next auction for Charnwood will take place on February 11, 2020. For more information about the Charnwood Big Switch please visit: charnwood.gov.uk/charnwoodbigswitch.

Very nearly four years ago a member of Thurcaston an Cropston Good Neighbours Scheme completed the very first job. That job – completed on April 11th – involved taking an elderly Cropston resident to a doctor’s appointment in Mountsorrel. In the four years since then scheme’s volunteers – currently 20 – have completed getting on for 600 jobs. They include driving neighbours to shops, medical and professional appointments, gardening, simple DIY tasks and providing companionship. The scheme swings into action when any resident of the two villages (or a family member) rings the group’s cellphone on 0743 526 5397. The co-ordinator takes details and e-mails all relevant volunteers. Only when the task is assigned, does the volunteer – all of whom must have DBS clearance – receive personal details about the villager and the help that is requested. In recent months alone, the scheme has contributed xx hours of service and its volunteers have driven more than 350 miles. Although entitled to claim out-ofpocket expenses, most drivers do not do so. The scheme does not make any charges for its services, but many grateful villagers donate so that the scheme can met its running costs. Many also make comments on the forms which they complete after satisfactory completion of each task. For instance, one person taken to repeat medical appointments wrote: “Kind and patient, as always. We are deeply obliged to you.” Another: “Wonderful job. Phil is a real asset. Thank you.” And another: “Happy to be driven in your car. Hope you enjoy the Easter egg from us all.” One woman left this Voicemail message on the GNS phone: “I just wanted to say thank you so much for organizing Maggie the befriender that visits Mum every Wednesday. I’ve taken this number from the Christmas card from the Cropston Good Neighbours Scheme. The difference that Maggie has made to Mum’s life I just cannot put into words. She looks forward to her arrival and really enjoys her company and talks about her often when she is not there in a very, very positive light. Thank you so much. This really, really has made a difference.” If you want to make a difference to your community… or if you want free help from a trustworthy Good Neighbour, please ring the scheme phone on 0743 526 5397.

GRANTS FOR LOCAL CAUSES The General Anstey Town Charity trustees will be holding their annual grants meeting in April this year to distribute funds to local charities and groups Applicants must be based in the village or serve the community of Anstey. These include non profit organisations, voluntary groups, youth organisations, sports clubs, faith and community groups. The Charity also has the discretion to award grants to individuals who may require support for educational or special needs projects. The Trustees require an independently up to date verified or audited statement of accounts. It is also helpful if applicants can indicate what activity, age group, equipment or project the grant is needed for and an approximate costing. They are also interested to know how many Anstey residents will benefit from the grants and are required to include a contact name and address and telephone number with their applications. In 2019 ÂŁ3,960 was awarded to ten local groups and organisations. During the last 10 years the Charity has awarded over ÂŁ30,000 to over 30 local applicants. Applications should be sent by the 31st of January 2020 to Anstey Town Charity, Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey LE7 7AY. For further details ring Vicky Ball 2125315 We Need Your Help. The charity, under the terms of its scheme laid down by the Charity Commission, cannot invest any of its income, this must be given to the community of Anstey. However, Anstey Town Charity is able to invest grants and donations with the Charities Investment Fund. With increasing demands for financial support the nine unpaid Trustees are anxious to attract this kind of funding from local bodies and individuals, perhaps in memory of a loved one or in appreciation of the work done by the Charity on behalf the village. They are very grateful for the support they receive from the Anstey Parish Council and the Gala Committee but hope that groups who have benefitted from their grants may feel able to make donations to Anstey Town Charity to enhance their work in the local community.

I hope you all managed to have some rest over the Christmas period and to spend time with family and friends. We are now into the New Year and beginning to plan for the year ahead and I wish all readers a very Happy New Year. Leading up to Christmas was very busy with events, the general election and preparing for the festive period. I had a few days away at the beginning of December in London and got home the day before the dreadful terrorist attacks on London Bridge, my thoughts are with the families affected by this unforgivable attack. On Saturday 30th November I attended the award ceremony for the ‘Celebrate Safely’ campaign at the Central Fire Station, Lancaster Road. Children from across the City and County were invited to submit their drawings that demonstrated how to celebrate safely, and the winners were invited to the award ceremony. The children had great fun on the fire engines and police car and we were all treated to a live rescue demonstration from the burning tower. On Monday 2nd December I attended the annual Charnwood Borough Council Sports Awards Ceremony at Burleigh Court, Loughborough. Another fantastic evening and some truly amazing people were presented as the winners. All the winners are on the Charnwood Borough Council website, but two particularly stand out for me which were the Special Recognition Award which recognises inspirational people awarded to Jesse Dufton who is a blind mountain climber and a special award to the Loughborough Foxes under 12’s football team and Molly Webb, who sadly passed away earlier in the year, aged 26. Molly had been a member of the club since aged 13 and was the manager of the under 12’s team. On Saturday 7th December I popped into Anstey Community Library who were hosting Santa in their Grotto. I peeped round the door to say hello, but Father Christmas was very busy. I also visited the Christmas Gala and enjoyed singing carols in The Nook. On Wednesday 11th December I joined the Police and Crime Commissioner and the local police beat team on a patch walk in Anstey. We visited local businesses to understand what crime issues they were concerned about and also spoke to some residents on route. A productive morning and good to hear that the local businesses are all supporting each other.

14

On Thursday 12th December I attended a Drugs Strategy Summit in Loughborough. This brought together many agencies from across the area to look at what each agency are doing and how we can work together in a more productive way to prevent the younger generation getting involved in drug related life styles. A good summit with some follow up work planned for 2020. On Sunday 15th December, after some sleep following being awake for 24 hours for the general election and election count, I headed to Charnwood Leisure Centre for the Girl Power Event organised by Charnwood Borough Council, Fusion Lifestyle and TayPlay Sport. The event aims to empower and engage women and girls into sports. 20% of the ticket sales were donated to local charity Living Without Abuse. I joined in with the relaxing yoga session and the super powered Bangra Blaze, not to mention the 60ft inflatable obstacle course (there are unfortunately, photos on my twitter feed). After a quick change I headed to the opening of the ARC Community Centre at Grange Park, Loughborough. A fantastic community building for the local residents to make good use of. With support from the National Lottery and some very hard-working people I was delighted to be invited to attend the official opening. My final event before Christmas was the Mayor of Charnwood’s carol service in Loughborough. A lovely evening to get everyone in the Christmas spirit with a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie to enjoy whilst chatting with friends and colleagues following the service.

Centre Bus 54A In my report last month, I advised that CentreBus have decided to withdraw their 54A service to Anstey from 21st December 2019. I have been working with officers at County Hall, looking at all potential options available. Under Leicestershire County Council’s new Transport Policy, residents should be within 800 metres walking distance of their nearest bus stop. The furthest house from the Hollow Road bus stop (on the Davidson’s Groby Road estate) is 783 metres so within walking distance, so County Hall will not be putting on any replacement service. I have asked if the Roberts 120 service could be diverted along Bradgate Road to pick up passengers rather than following the same route as the First 74 bus service. Officers are not happy to do this, as the Roberts 120 would miss 7 stops along Hollow Road and Stadon Road and only have one stop on Bradgate Road. Therefore, I have now asked if part of the First 74 Service can be

diverted to cover that side of the village. Officers are speaking to the First bus company and I will come back to you through my report with any updates I receive. For people with mobility difficulties there is a community transport provision from John Storer. John Storer is a Loughborough based independent charity serving Charnwood. The community transport provision receives support from Leicestershire County Council. Residents with any mobility difficulties may book a journey by telephoning the provider directly. John Storer asks that residents’ book in advance, ideally with 7 days’ notice, however in practice shorter notice period is possible, depending on driver availability. They are also able to take bookings for any regular journey. There are two forms of Community Transport provision delivered by John Storer, a social car scheme and a fully accessible community minibus. The social car scheme is delivered by volunteer drivers who use their own cars. The community minibus provides regular shopping journeys or transport for community groups. Community transport is chargeable via a zonal fare scheme, with the cost dependent on the exact journey requirements. The service is generally available Monday to Friday during the daytime, journeys outside of these times is dependent upon the availability of volunteer drivers. The Social Car Scheme is for passengers requiring car journeys driven by volunteer drivers for shopping, primary health care appointments, visiting, leisure, hairdresser etc. Please contact either Candi Barnes or Monica Gonzalez on 01509 631761 to discuss eligibility and cost. Alternatively email monica.gonzalez@johnstorercharnwood.org. uk or candida.barnes@johnstorercharnwood.org.uk If you need any further support, please get in touch with me.

Centre Bus 154 Centrebus have now submitted changes to the Traffic Commissioners to take effect from 26th January 2020 affecting the Leicester to Loughborough and return service. The changes submitted are to the Monday to Friday service. Centrebus has reduced the service down to 2 services a day in both directions. This is a huge reduction from the service currently offered. This will affect most of the villages within my division and will have a huge impact on many residents trying to access school, work, shopping and health care. At the time of writing I am waiting for

t: 0800 6446 150 • e: yourlocal@openboxpromotions.co.uk • w: www.openboxpromotions.co.uk

Leicestershire County Council to assess the impact of the reduction in the service against their Transport Policy. Until this has been completed, and this will involve discussions with the operator, there is not any further information that I can share at the moment. I am hopeful that the discussions will be positive, and that the villages will be served by a better service than that which is currently proposed. I have received many telephone calls, emails and letters from residents regarding the bus service, so I do know how concerned residents are. I am hoping that I can provide a positive update in my report next month. I am very happy for residents to send me their concerns via email and I will forward these on for you or you can email directly to choosehowyoumove@leics.gov.uk to share your concerns.

Consultations

was unable to promote the consultation of the relocation of the bus stop on Leicester Road, Anstey. I did share on all my social media and there were notices on display in the area. The consultation closed on 20th December 2019 and the results of the consultation will now be sent onto Anstey Parish Council for further discussion. Another consultation that will be going live in January is for three posts to be placed outside the post office on Bradgate Road, Anstey to prevent vehicles from parking on the shop frontage. No vehicles should be crossing over the pavement and certainly not reversing onto a pedestrian crossing. We have had several near misses involving pedestrains in the area and I hope this important safety measure will be in place very soon. If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help.

Deborah

Due to the timings of the printing of the Your Local magazine and notification I received I

respond quickly to resolve the issues. Leaders have high expectations for all pupils to do well. Pupils achieve well during their time at the school, including in reading. Teachers make learning enjoyable. Pupils say that learning is fun and that they learn a lot in most subjects. They take pride in their work.

Woolden Hill wish you a very Happy New Year!

of education and making great progress.

Welcome to our latest update to share with you all the fantastic developments taking place. We are very proud of the events at the school and hope that you will enjoy reading about them.

I am proud to announce that, after at least 23 years since it was last a good school, Woolden Hill Primary School is now a rated as a Good school in all areas of the new inspection framework!

Ofsted visit -At the end of November we were visited by Ofsted inspectors as part of their cycle of monitoring of schools. We had a two day inspection where the team had the opportunity to talk to our pupils, staff and parents and observe teaching and learning across a range of subjects in order to make their judgements about our school. The new inspection framework focuses heavily on the checking that the curiculum we have designed for our pupils ensures that they receive a broad and balanced curriculum where pupils know and remember more. As you are hopefully aware from previous articles in this magazine, the team at Woolden Hill are always working super hard to provide innovative and exciting opportunities for our pupils. Our curriculum considers local and global issues and pupils have the ability to design their own learning outcomes too. This has resulted in excellent results for our pupils where they leave our school ready for the next stage

We were delighted that the inspection team were very impressed with the range of experiences the children gain and agreed that our school is working very hard to ensure that all pupils achieve success. Here is a short quote to summarise the key findings of what Ofsted found it to be like to attend our school. “Pupils and staff are happy at this school. Pupils’ behaviour is good and everyone gets alone together in this community school. We saw pupils being polite and kind to each other during the inspection. Pupils welcomed us as visitors to their school. They were courteous, respectful and helpful. Pupils say they feel safe at school. They know there is always someone they can talk to. Bullying is rare. When it does occur, staff

Parents and carers told us how much the staff do for their children. Parents descibed the staff as ‘caring, enthusiastic and inspiring’. Parents appreciate the support and learing opportunities that staff provide. This includes the many extra activties pupils enjoy.” For those who would like to read more about the inspection, the report has just been published and will be available to read on our school wesbite very soon or can be found via the ofsted website too. As headteacher, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have supported our journey to achieving this recognition. I am so proud or the staff and pupils and know that together we will continue to plan even more exciting and inspiring things in the future. We have completed all of our open days for this academic year. However, we always welcome visitors to our school so if you are interested to find out more about our school, please contact the school office (0116 2362154) to make an appointment. I look forward to sharing more with you very soon! With warm regards,

Sarah Sadler, Headteacher

Half the 2019/2020 season done and Anstey Rugby have Eleven Wins

FILM PRESENTATIONS

Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council

Anstey RFC start of the new year unbeaten and top the table in Merit C Leicestershire League after recent wins against Oadby Wyggs, 33-0 and Aylestone St. James, 39-3 A couple of games in December fell victim to waterlogged pitches which was a shame as the team have great momentum and a real buzz. With a free weekend on the Saturday before Christmas our team were not dressed in their usual Anstey RFC shirts but instead in an array of Christmas Jumpers when they headed off to Leicester City centre for a lively evening.

Bohemian Rhapsody provided wonderful entertainment in the life story of Queen’s remarkable lead singer, Freddie Mercury, displaying his talent for writing and piano playing as well as extraordinary singing. Watching our film this month were three generations, all enjoying mince pies as an extra treat at the interval. It was a wonderful evening. “Red Joan” will be shown on January 10th 2020 and lasts 110 minutes.

We look forward to packed January programme with home games versus Aylestone Athletic and Melbourne as well as away games at South Leicester and Market Bosworth. Fixtures are in place every week right through to President’s Day with our big 40th Anniversary Gala Dinner taking place on Saturday 13th June in the Tryline Suite at Leicester Tigers. Live music and guest speakers will be included on what will be a great event.

Our first film for the new year is a fantastic true British story of a "Granny spy" played by Dame Judi Dench. As a civil servant after World War 11, she falls under suspicion by the authorities for being a Soviet spy, possibly because she was associating with a Russian Communist. Will she be able to prevent the ultimate destruction of herself as well as her friend?

Note on your new 2020 calendars please. We want as many people as possible who have been involved with Anstey RFC since 1980 to celebrate with us on the night.

"Green Book" will be shown on February 14th and lasts 130 minutes.

All our fixtures can be found on our website at www.pitchhero.com/clubs/anstey Or on our club noticeboard in The Coach & Horses (carpark end). Training is every Wednesday evening under floodlights at our Link Road ground.

Another amazing true story will be our biographical comedy drama in February. This film brings to light the racial division in American society during the 1960's. When a club bouncer falls on hard times, he becomes the concert tour driver for a talented African-American concert pianist. Having won three Oscars and three BAFTA'S, this film is a warm and joyous tale about loyalty and companionship.

Anstey RFC are always ready to welcome new players, experienced or not. As well as playing, you will join the lively social life that goes with Rugby Union. As a bonus, playing the game will help get you fit. Matches are on Saturdays, kicking off at 2:15pm, reverting to 3pm from March. If you would like to support the club with sponsorship, contact any committee member for details. Details for all the club officials are on the Anstey RFC noticeboard inside our clubhouse at The Coach and Horses. Or call our Captain, Liam Curtis on 07727 118362 Or visit www.pitchhero.com/clubs/anstey or our Facebook Group Page at www.facebook.com/groups/20694012567 Article by Chris Apperley

The Big Garden Birdwatch Saturday 25 January to Monday 27 January thrushes seen in gardens had declined by 76%, coming in at number 20. Your results help us spot problems, but more importantly, they are also the first step in putting things right. This is why it's so important that we count garden birds. How to take part It’s so easy to take part. An hour with the birds is a wonderful opportunity to sit back, relax and spend time with nature. So, pop the kettle on, put your feet up and start counting!

Take part in the world’s largest wildlife survey on 25-27 January and do something great for nature. Just choose an hour any time over the three days and enjoy time with nature counting birds. How does Big Garden Birdwatch help? For over 40 years, we've been asking you to count the birds in your garden – and you've been brilliant at it. With over half a million people now regularly taking part, coupled with 40 years worth of data, Big Garden Birdwatch allows us to monitor trends and helps us understand how birds are doing. As the format of the survey has stayed the same, the scientific data can be compared yearon-year, making your results very valuable to our scientists. With results from so many gardens, we are able to create a "snapshot" of bird numbers across the UK. For four decades, the Big Garden Birdwatch has highlighted the winners and losers in the garden bird world. It was one of the first surveys to alert the RSPB to the decline in the number of song thrushes in gardens. This species was a firm fixture in the top 10 in 1979, but by 2019 numbers of song

Watch the birds for one hour • Choose an hour between 25 and 27 January to watch the birds in your garden or local park. •

Count the most birds that land at once

Only count the birds that land in your garden or park, not those flying over. The same birds may land more than once, so you can avoid double counting by recording the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time – not the total number you count over the hour.

Tell us what you saw Every count is important, so don’t worry if you don’t see anything. Observing which birds aren’t around is as important as seeing the ones that are. You can submit your results online at rspb.org.uk/birdwatch from 25 January until 16 February. If you’d prefer to send us your results by post, you can download a submission form from rspb.org.uk/birdwatch. Please make sure you post your findings back to us by 11 February.

Public Footpaths J71, J70 and J69, South of Groby Road In last month’s report, we advised that we were waiting for a meeting with Charnwood Borough Council’s planning managers regarding the footpaths and the new bridge over Rothley Brook not being completed before the first dwelling was occupied in July 2019 on the Gynsill Lane development. The weather has now halted the work and the contractors are hoping to be back on site on 6th January 2020 with different equipment, but it is weather dependent. That meeting was held just before Christmas.

We are aware that a planning condition has been breached but after discussions with Charnwood it is clear that to put a stop notice on the development would not be proportional and would be open to appeal by the developers and they would be very likely to succeed in their appeal. We have asked what the developers can do to mitigate the situation that we are now in. Charnwood have since spoken to the developers to make a few improvements to the area. Metal has been put down both sides of the unfinished footpath so you can use the existing bridge without wading through mud. The developers have also unlocked the gate at the back of the new development on the new, diverted footpath. This means you can now walk between Anstey and Glenfield using the old bridge for the time being. We are hopeful that the new bridge will be open very soon.

Crime Prevention Over the past few weeks we have experienced an increase in burglaries in the area. The police have sent out some advice through the Neighbourhood Link. We are sending this message through our report to raise awareness and to pass on some crime prevention advice. Burglars don’t want to be seen or heard and if they think they’ll be noticed by a neighbour or passer-by, they'll probably move on. Here's some advice on helping keep burglars out by giving them no hiding places. Keep it visible! You’d think that it would be best to make a property less visible from the street, and to keep it hidden from prying eyes behind overgrown bushes, trees, high fences or walls. All that this serves to do is make it easier for a burglar to get close to a home unnoticed and provide somewhere to hide while carrying out a burglary or theft from the property. ➢

Lower fences at the front around one-metre high are preferable to high fences as they allow for a clear view over the top and don’t provide cover for anyone wishing to hide

At the rear and sides, taller fencing is recommended to prevent easy access

Trellis, thorny plants, or a suitable anti-climb topping such as plastic spikes make it difficult for anyone climbing over a fence or gate

Age Uk Leicester Shire & Rutland Winter campaign - Heating or Eating We are already waking up to cold temperatures each morning, and it’s easy to take central heating and warm dinners for granted. Both heating and eating are vital for our health in the cold weather, which is why Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland is launching its Heating or Eating campaign.

ANSTEY WI Anstey WI’s December meeting was rich with Christmas cheer. Chris Figgins told two delightful seasonal stories, and then the Cocktail Shaker Boys spoke about the art of cocktail making. We learned about the ingredients. Who knew that Cointreau is simply a triple sec, for instance? Then came the best bit: the demonstration of making a Cosmopolitan and a Grasshopper, as well as two non-alcoholic mocktails, all of which we were able to sample.

Winter hardship causes over 50,000 deaths every year in England and Wales. Locally 650 people will die this winter because they can’t afford their heating bills. A staggering fact is that 10% of our counties’ households are in fuel poverty. The Heating or Eating campaign, which runs throughout the winter, aims to help older people in food and fuel poverty in our local community. All donations received throughout the campaign will be used to provide food parcels, blankets, hot water bottles and winter clothing or to help older people pay utility bills, fix or replace boilers and heaters. Do you need our help? If you are over 50 and facing the choice of heating or eating, Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland can help you this winter and can help you prepare for future winters. We can • Give you a free Home Energy Check and energy saving items which will reduce your heating costs •

Make sure that you are getting your benefit entitlements which will increase your income

Help you to work with your energy provider so you are on the best energy tariffs

Signpost you to other services which will help you prepare for and get the support you need during winter

There followed supper, and a visit from Santa and one of his elves. A good time had been had by all, and we went home more than ready for all the festivities.

How can you help? Your donation could save a life in your community this winter. Please donate online at www.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/heatingoreating or by cheque, payable to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, to Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland, Lansdowne House, 113 Princess Road East, Leicester LE1 7LA. Please call 0116 299 2233 for more information. For more information contact Tessa Trace at Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland on 0116 299 2233.

Come and Sing Duruflé's Requiem – one day workshop in Loughborough – BOOK NOW! Charnwood Voices is delighted to invite you to its Come and Sing workshop on Saturday January 18TH 2020 at Trinity Methodist Church Centre in Loughborough. Registration will be at 10am and the day will end with a 5.30pm performance. Pre-booking is essential. It is open to all singers, whether you sing regularly with a choir or not. Many of the singers who come will not have sung the music before. It does help if you are able to read music to some degree and have listened to the piece before the day, but there are always some singers present who have done the piece before and lead the way. The day is hard work but great fun and very rewarding. We finish the afternoon with an informal performance to amaze our audience of friends and family with what we have achieved during the day. Our workshop leader, Charnwood Voices’ Musical Director Nicholas Scott-Burt writes, “The Requiem by Maurice Duruflé is one of the most beautiful examples of liturgical music from the 20th century. Strongly influenced by Fauré's famous setting of the same text, it is full of gloriously sing-able lines and magical harmonies. We have a whole day to master this work of such ethereal, heartrending magnificence. A wonderful work to sing: one or two tricky corners certainly along the way, but plenty of time for us to find our way confidently around those!” Our accompanist and organist will be Richard Dunster-Sigtermans. There are limited places and this workshop has booked up in the past, so BOOK NOW! The cost will be £15 per person and application forms are available to download from our website www.charnwoodvoices.org.uk Library copies of the music will be available on the day for those who request them on their booking forms. This will be a great opportunity to take part in this wonderful piece!

NEWTOWN LINFORD CHORAL SOCIETY On Friday 31st January and Saturday 1st February 2020, the Choral Society will be presenting an exciting concert in Ratby Parish Church accompanied by a Chamber Orchestra. The Soprano soloist is Bethan Williams. The music to be performed will comprise pieces by two contemporary British composers. The first of these is Bob Chilcott, who composed ‘The Little Jazz Mass’ for a choral festival in New Orleans. It successfully brings together two musical traditions— the Latin Mass and Jazz. The second composer is Karl Jenkins, and his composition ’Stabat Mater’. Karl Jenkins is a very accomplished musician and composer, with a background in jazz and rock music as well as classical choral works. This is reflected in ‘Stabat Mater’, originally inspired by the works of a medieval poem. Tickets will be available for this very special concert from Ratby Post Office, the Old Post Office Tea Rooms in Newtown Linford, Peter Sayer 01530 243822, or online from www.ticketsource.co.uk/newtown-linford-choral-society

THE MONDAY CLUB CROPSTON AND THURCASTON

CROPSTON EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH Once again, Birstall Golf Club was the venue of choice for our Christmas lunch, held on Monday 2nd December 2019. Members and their guests, totalling 31 people, attended. Following a very tasty lunch, which was served to the usual high standard by the attentive catering team, Jenny Kennington thanked everyone for coming and it was good that some members who had been absent from meetings for most of the year, due to personal circumstances, were able to attend. Then, a toast was made to “absent friends” who, for various reasons, were unable to share this annual occasion. The Club’s customary raffle was held which raised the sum of £83 for Club funds. For after-lunch entertainment, Jenny was pleased to welcome, for a return visit, the group of hand bell ringers from All Saints’ Church, Thurcaston with Cropston, some of whom had also joined us for lunch. The sweet sound of the bells was evocative of the forthcoming Christmas season and each piece played was introduced by the group’s leader, Peter Hunt. The appreciative audience was happy to sing along with some of the well-known Christmas music and carols and the music was interspersed with both serious and humorous readings – a very pleasant way to celebrate the start of the festive season. A

collection was taken in support of the Loros Hospice, which is the chosen charity of the hand bell ringers – this achieved £97.75. Thanks were given to the committee members for their work throughout the year, and particularly to Jenny for organising the lunch. ANSTEY CHESS CLUB LATEST NEWS... Firstly from me some thank yous and apologies! Thank yous: Anstey Parish Council for the grant money that has been sent to me for the chess club. It will come in very handy for paying LRCA league fees and some more equipment for the club. Thank you to the members of the council that approved our grant. June Janes for the wonderful chess set that she donated to the club. The board and set were of excellent quality - thank you. Apologies: For not submitting an article last month - my age and my chess must be catching up with me! Results: There have been so many results recently (especially since I missed a month!) that it would be unfair in terms of room for them all to be printed. The club's first team have had some excellent results and sit proudly at the top of the LRCA's (Leicestershire & Rutland Chess Association) division 4 going into the Christmas break. We have played 8, won 7, drawn 1 and lost 0 - so far!

The second team have had mixed results with some excellent wins - they are comfortably mid-table in division 5. Free Chess Sessions - Reminder: Sadly, we are not running any chess sessions on Saturday mornings for the foreseeable future. The Stadon wasn't quite right for Saturday morning coaching - it is perfect as a league venue though - so we decided to stop the training/ coaching/practice sessions for now. We will hunt for a new venue and let you all know how we progress. Website - Reminder: Fantastic news here! We have a NEW website. After much scouring of the internet/looking at other sports clubs and what they do - a considerable amount of research, even if I do say so myself - we have found a new host for our site. www.pitchero.com/clubs/ansteychessclub Feel free to have a browse if you have a spare minute or two.
