A campaign has started to fight the proposed closure of Children’s Centres across Leicestershire. Leicestershire County Council have proposed closing 24 Children's Centres (formerly known as Surestart centres) and one family centre and merging the service with all other family and young people’s services, including Supporting Leicestershire Families (SLF) scheme, Early Help Information Support and Assessment (EHISA) and the Youth Offending service (YOS).

SALES TEAM SARAH TAYLOR T: 0800 6446 150 E: sarah@openboxpromotions.co.uk

Following the launch of the council’s consultation an action group, ‘Save Our Children’s Centres Leicestershire’ has been started on Facebook to oppose the closures. The group comprises of users past and present, volunteers, health professionals and various support groups operating out of the centres.

DAWN HARRIS T: 0800 6446 150 E: dawn@openboxpromotions.co.uk

Liz Yeates, one of the group’s founder members, who used the centres with her young daughter said, “We cannot allow these services to be cut from the lives of the most vulnerable, and we’ve got to defend the jobs of the people who have dedicated their careers to assisting our most vulnerable young children.”

DISTRIBUTION MANAGER ANDREW LEWIS M: 07504 634 838 E: andy@openboxpromotions.co.uk

In addition to the council's own services many other agencies operate out of Children' Centres, for example Health Visiting services, Breastfeeding Support, Child Health Events and many volunteer led groups such as Breastfeeding groups, Parent Carer Well-being, Sling (babywearing), Multiple-birth (twins etc.) support groups, Childminder groups, singing and music groups. The centres are also well used by the council's own GO LEARN service providing valuable education programs for parents in need.

Liz Blackshaw, a volunteer who has worked at a number of the Children's Centres and another founder member of the action group said, “The centres have transformed the lives of young children and their parents up across Leicestershire. The important role that children’s centres play in providing effective multi-agency working is widely recognised both locally and nationally.”

Adding “In all likelihood it is the parents of the most vulnerable children who will be the ones least likely to attend the new centres.” Michelle Robson, mother of four and volunteer for Home Start a charity operating out of the centres said, “I’m particularly worried about the effect the closures would have on a mothers mental health. Early parenthood can be very isolating and the support and contact mums get at the centre is vitally important. Children's Centres are worth their weight in gold and without them my own story could have been very different.”

NEXT ISSUE OUT

The group has expressed their concern that vulnerable families and children in need will be forced to make extended (and in some cases prohibitively expensive) journeys to the remaining centres. In addition the group is worried that some may feel stigmatized for going to a building that will also be used for the Youth Offending Service.

County Councilor Sean Sheahan, Labour's spokesperson on Children and Families, said "Children's Centres are a precious resource for young families whenever they need extra support. Closing Children's Centres and taking away that support risks enormous harm, not only to families today, but also to future generations."

Maria Bagnall who is an administrator of the group’s Facebook page has started a petition on 38degrees to oppose the changes https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-leicestershire-s-children-s-centres But she stressed that the most important thing was for all users, volunteers anyone else with an interest to complete the on-line consultation. The survey for the consultation can be found at https://tinyurl.com/y7du448l Emails pertaining to the consultation should be sent to earlyhelpreview@leics.gov.uk The consultation closes on midnight Sunday 22nd April.

Have your say on school term and holiday dates

Newtown Linford Gardening Club Gardeners’ Question Time Our gardening club was privileged to be invited by BBC Radio 4 to host a recording of that very popular programme ‘Gardeners’ Question Time’ The village hall was packed to hear them make not just one, but two progammes which will be broadcast on February 16th and March 23rd.

RESIDENTS across Leicestershire are being given the opportunity to have their say on their preferred school term and holiday dates from Autumn 2019. Leicestershire County Council has launched a consultation to capture the views of the public on three suggested options, one of which is to align with patterns in city schools.

The engineers began to set up their equipment at 2.00pm, the audience arrived at 5.30pm and the actual recording began at around 6.15pm.

The options are: • Retain the current Leicestershire pattern which includes an early Autumn half-term break and an early Spring half-term break;

In the chair was Eric Robson, whose dry wit and mellow tones kept the programmes running smoothly throughout the whole evening. The three panellists were:Matt Biggs, who grew up locally and has relatives buried in Newtown Linford Cemetery. He made his name working at Kew for a number of years. Matthew Wilson, who has been curator at both RHS Hyde Hall and RHS Harlow Carr and whose Chelsea garden won the people’s choice award. Christine Walkden, who will be well-known to all gardeners from her regular television appearances and for her unique style of presentation.

The first programme was presented as being directly Newtown Linford whereas the from County of Leicestershire. second one was announced as being from the Many of our members were selected to ask questions and we forward to hearing the final are all looking version of the programme on our radios.

This was a wonderful coup for our club and yet another example of the high quality of meetings which we strive to present. On another matter entirely, our April Celebrity Evening with Bob Flowerdew is already a sell-out and the best anyone, who has not got a ticket, can do is to join a waiting list and hope for some returns.

A term time pattern based on Leicester City Council’s arrangements from Autumn 2019;

An alternative pattern, which includes a later Autumn half-term break from 2019 and a later Spring half-term break from 2020;

“The current term dates for our schools in the county end in Summer 2019 so, as a result, we’re required to consult on future term dates and I’m encouraging people to have their say. The feedback will enable us to determine if we maintain the current arrangements or align school terms with surrounding areas”. Councillor Ivan Ould, county council cabinet member for children and families

To ensure schools and parents have sufficient notice, the consultation on term-time patterns applies for 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22.

People can have their say at www.leicestershire.gov.uk/term-timeconsultation or to request a paper copy, call 0116 305 6324 or email admissions@leics.gov.uk

Give it a Grow: Seeds I am very grateful to my family, especially memories with great grandparents, for giving me a love and respect of nature. They would revel in the delights each season brought. At this time of year, that interest would come through searching out the “firstâ€? snow drop or daffodil. I now have that same sense of anticipation and none more so than when winter turns to spring. In February and March, I begin to emerge from a kind of self-imposed hibernation, meaning that I’ve chosen to let the garden ‘sleep’ and had a break from garden related jobs. However, the ‘break’, is purely a physical one, as my mind never really switches off from ‘planning’ what I want to see growing in the garden next year. As the spring bulbs begin their display in the gardens, it reminds me of one of the pleasures of gardening, which for me is simply, to ‘watch things grow’. It is at this time of year that my ‘overwinter planning’ can begin; in the form of seed sowing. If you too are considering sowing some seeds, now is the time to start, (i.e. on a windowsill), and a tip I use, is to begin with ‘the plate’. Think about what food you enjoy eating and imagine it on your plate; home grown, picked seconds ago, fresh, from the garden, plant pot or window box. Maybe it would be lettuce leaves (so many ‘cut and come again’ varieties to choose from) or peas; tomatoes or runner beans; radishes or spring onions. I’ve had variable success with all the above and can highly recommend the whole process to you; from seed to plate, well mouth, actually! Another tip, which I find harder to follow, is to ‘start small’. Plants do need ‘tending’, so focusing on one or two crops at a time can ensure that they thrive; providing you with quantity, as well as quality. Once you’ve decided and bought the seeds of your chosen edible [organic is best], follow the instructions on the packet. Seeds are amazing, in that they contain all the nutrients they need to germinate. Therefore, they need ‘nutrient poor soil’ to start off with, hence ‘seed compost’. Remember to plant in a pot with holes for drainage, and provide them with water, warmth and light, keeping the soil moist, but not too wet. Then, look out for shoots to emerge. Eventually, you may even see roots coming through the bottom of the pot. Once the seedlings have got at least 4 (or 2 sets) of leaves, they can be planted on. Plant them into bigger pots, with ‘richer soil’, which will feed the roots, to produce strong and healthy plants. Whether you ‘give it a grow’ this season or not, do take a moment to notice the spring bulbs in flower and maybe even make a note of any you’d like in your garden next spring, which you would need to buy and plant this autumn!‌And so the seasons go‌. Leicestershire Masters Gardeners, is a volunteer scheme, run by ‘Garden Organic’, training and supporting their volunteers to promote the benefits of ‘growing your own food’, equipping them to provide advice and support to people in their local neighbourhood.

FILM PRESENTATIONS

Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council Having a sumptuous set, the "Viceroy's House" was an unforgettable film. We saw the problems facing Lord Mountbatten as he organised the British transfer of power to India in 1947. As viceroy, he had to succumb to political pressure to partition the sub-continent which caused disturbing violence and much loss of life. At least the Hindu/Muslim romance did turn out surprisingly well. . "Victoria and Abdul" will be shown on March 9th and lasts 112 minutes. Dame Judi Dench stars in this British biographical comedy drama. Abdul was given to Queen Victoria as a servant from British India but found favour with her, becoming her close, personal secretary. He taught her Hindi, some curry recipes and about Indian culture. Abdul bypassed traditional Victorian hierarchy, receiving from Victoria many medals. He gathered animosity among the household but she still loved him as a son. This will be a royal treat. "Breathe" will be shown on April 13th and lasts 117 minutes. This extraordinary true story, told over three decades, tells us about Robin who, in 1950, contracts the devastating disease, poliomyelitis. He actually escapes from hospital and, encouraged by his wife, leads a full and passionate life, with the aid of a wheelchair that was invented specially for him. "Breathe" is a moving British romantic drama starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy. "Whisky Galore" will be shown on May 11th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Film tickets will cost £5 which will include refreshments and a lucky prize draw during the interval. Advanced tickets may be purchased via the parish office –0116 236 7626 or at the door.

proud of him for representing our school and showing such flair for cooking! Well done.

Sport at Woolden Hill Our new Sports Coach, Mr Brown, has been working really hard to improve the range of activities on offer for the children at Woolden Hill. This has resulted in new play leaders at lunchtime to ensure active lunchtime and also after school care and holiday clubs. Welcome to our latest update to share with you all the fantastic developments at Woolden Hill! We are very proud of the events taking place at the school and hope that you will enjoy reading about them.

Parent fun! At Woolden Hill we pride ourselves on supporting our parents and ensuring that they get to come and see all the exciting learning opportunities that our children have experienced. We have had our E-Safety and Phonics PIE (Parent Information Evening) which was supported by expertise in our Discovery Schools Academy Trust. The events  were practical and hands on and parents found them very useful!

good practise with one and other. This also benefits our children greatly! Our children attended our annual Maths Conference to learn about Maths in the real world. This event takes place on a Saturday and the children experienced four workshops to apply their maths knowledge. Our children really enjoyed the Crystal Maze challenge and working with Magical Maths at the end of the conference.



The impact of our active lunchtimes has been huge – children are enjoying playing a range of sports such as tennis, hockey, skipping games, traditional games and many more! Report from Anstey Parish Council Recreational Facilities The Parish Council recently commissioned a feasibility study to look into the possibility of additional indoor recreational facilities at Link Road. Working in partnership with Martin High School who have a known need for a sports hall, the Parish Council were looking into the need of the groups within the village to establish if there were enough community rooms available. The Parish Council would like to thank all of the groups that took part in this work. The majority of community demand for indoor facilities appears to be at the evenings and weekends, with spare capacity at those venues available for hire during the day. Completing the feasibility study has been a useful exercise in demonstrating through evidence that there is not an evidence base for providing extra community facilities. The Parish Council will now be turning their attention back to the needs of the Scouts and the Scout Hut on Leicestershire Road. A

8

meeting of the Project and Finance Committee will be held on the 20th March to discuss the Scouts needs.

Parish Meeting – Grant Giving The Parish Meeting which is to be held on the 10th April this will be used an opportunity to give grants to local organisations. If your group could benefit with extra cash and you would like to be involved in the event please contact the Parish Office (0116) 236 2646 to receive an application form. At the Parish Meeting the Events Committee would like to introduce a community award. We are interested in recognising a resident who has made a significant contribution to the village over a period of years. Public recognition of this award will be made at the Parish Meeting. If you know of someone who merits an award please do nominate them, stating their name and the reasons why you think they deserve the award, please send this information to the Parish Office email: deputyclerk@ansteypc.org

David Snartt Reports... Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate

Planning Update Woodhouse Parish I have received details of the planning appeal for change of use of land from paddock to garden and erection of a single storey outbuilding, Forest Rock Close, Woodhouse Eaves. The Planning Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State dismissed the appeal stating in the conclusions of the appeal decision: ‘Whilst I have found that the proposal would not significantly harm protected species, this is a neutral effect and does not outweigh the harm I have found regarding the effect on the character and appearance of the area and the living conditions of neighbouring occupants’. I referred in a previous report to a planning application to erect 9 dwellings on land at Briscoe Lane, Woodhouse. I have now received the decision that Charnwood Borough Council have refused this application, the reasons include: The proposed development is located within the village of Woodhouse which is defined within the Core Strategy Policy CS1 as ‘small village or hamlet’. Policy CS1 sets out the development strategy for Charnwood and seeks to guide new development to sustainable locations. Woodhouse is not regarded as a sustainable location for new housing due to the lack of services and facilities provided. The application to carry out crown reduction works to trees at Lady Martin Drive, Woodhouse Eaves has been amended, omitting the large perimeter beech tree and agreeing that branches to be pruned will not exceed 75mm in diameter. This application has now been granted. I am pleased this application was amended so that it safeguards the health and amenity of each tree. In my view, after making a visit to the area, I am pleased the magnificent large beech tree remains untouched. Until I understand more fully the details and issues with an application to erect two detached dwellings to land at the rear of 80 Main Street, Woodhouse Eaves, I have asked that this application is determined by a Plans Committee.

Parking Enforcement, Newtown Linford Following the Public Meeting in the Village Hall, I have been in correspondence with both the County Council and Borough Council about what, in my view, were the difficulties and issues with illegal on-street parking within the village. This, I believe, needs effective enforcement to be carried out, especially at peak times when the weather is fine and sunny.

10

After my report on this subject in last month’s Your Local, I have received an e-mail from a resident living in a nearby village who outlined why she does park within the village when visiting Bradgate Park, I thought I would share it with you. ‘Further to your report in the Local magazine regarding parking in Newtown Linford, I think it might also be useful to consider how Bradgate Park is used and the causes for the problem parking in the village. As a local resident I like to use the park on a regular basis, but I will only usually be able to stay for an hour at the most. As parking fees at the park are priced for the whole day this makes the charges unrealistic for the type of usage I have for myself and others. I know it is of the utmost importance that some free or reasonably priced short stay parking is always available’. I did refer to this issue at the Public Meeting, as being the possible root cause of the escalation of vehicles parking on the village roads, Until the last two years, I have never seen so many vehicles parked all along Bradgate Road sometimes right to the Parish boundary and beyond. This can occur even when the Bradgate Park car park is relatively empty. I have also corresponded with the Director at Bradgate about my thoughts on the consequences of only a full day parking charge. The response I received was somewhat disappointing. Therefore, I have asked that this is an item on the agenda at the next Trustees meeting and a response given so that I may communicate the outcome to local residents. I have also put forward a question to the Charnwood Full Council Meeting on the 26th February, asking the Leader of the Borough Council to take this issue up with the County Council to have effective enforcement for the village of Newtown Linford, recognising the number of visitors to Bradgate Park and the increasing number of vehicles parking illegally on the village roads. In my view, this problem has increased since the Bradgate Park Trust changed to only all day parking charges within their Newtown Linford car park.

Traffic Management, Newtown Linford After the Public Meeting, I noted the comments and possible solutions that came forward about the recent parking consultation conducted by the County Council. There is a growing highway safety issue on Bradgate Road, which came across very strongly during the meeting. After the meeting, I was sent videos taken by a resident showing disturbing driving practices along this

stretch of highway. Drivers of vehicles were mounting the kerb and driving at speed along the footway for some distance. This is totally unacceptable behaviour, especially as this footway is used by young people and families living in this area of the village. This is the consequence of the visitors to Bradgate Park parking their vehicles, I am told, to avoid parking charges as stated above. I have forwarded the information and videos to the Police, I see this as a major priority to achieve a resolution to this problem, before there is a serious accident involving pedestrians. The Police have responded stating: The Police will be meeting with the County Council to discuss what options, if any, are available to us with a view to remove or to minimise the problems illustrated on the videos. I will continue to press for a satisfactory solution to this unacceptable position. As I said at the Public Meeting, to do nothing is not an option, as there are further issues right across the village. These, in my opinion, also need to be addressed by a total village solution, but after seeing the latest videos, I do believe there is a priority to resolve the current driver practices along Bradgate Road.

Charnwood Armed Forces Breakfast Club You may recall, I made reference to this Breakfast Club in a previous report. This takes place at the Toby Carvery , Loughborough from 9.30am to 11.30am every second Saturday in the month.

I attended the February one which was the first anniversary of the Breakfast Club. You may have seen this as the TV cameras from BBC local news were in attendance. I was delighted to see local ex forces residents attending after seeing my report in Your Local, I am sure they enjoyed the occasion. Joan and I certainly did, reminiscing with people who were serving in the same location in Cyprus back in the 1960’s. If any serving members and families or ex members would like more information please e-mail victoria.coomber@charnwood.gov.uk

Newtown Linford Public Meeting I would like to thank everyone that made the effort to attend the Newtown Linford public meeting to discuss parking and traffic issues within the village organised by the Parish Council, I think there were over 90 people in attendance. There were also representatives from the Police, Newtown Linford Parish Council, Leicestershire County Council (LCC) and Bradgate Park Trust. It was a lively meeting with plenty of ideas and solutions put forward. I felt there were many positives to take away from the meeting and a way forward identified. The general feeling of the meeting was that we need to look at the parking in the village in a holistic way rather than piecemeal solutions that just move the problem elsewhere in the village. There is plenty of work ahead of us and the Parish Council will be taking the lead. I have already had a further meeting with LCC regarding the recent double yellow lines consultations and we discussed how we could move this forward. If you did not manage to raise any issues or solutions in the public meeting please do still send them to the Parish Council.

Cropston Road, Anstey I was dismayed to receive notification that a part of Cropston Road in Anstey will be closed for 2 weeks. The closure is for work on a sewer in the area. I have asked several times if this work could be completed under temporary traffic lights but have been informed that the sewer is in the centre of the carriageway. The closure will be over the 2 weeks of the school Easter holidays from 26th March until 8th April.

Cabinet Changes

t

The residents who live on the Fairhaven Road estate will only be able to turn left out of their estate to follow the diversion route and will have no assess into Anstey village centre with vehicles. The original diversion route was through Cropston and Newtown Linford. With the current issues that we have with parking in Newtown Linford and the work being over the of traffic through Newtown Linford. I therefore asked Easter holidays I was extremely concerned about diverting a large amount of traffic through Newtown Linford. I therefore asked the Highway Authority to speak to the City Council to ask if we could divert through Thurcaston and the city as there is no alternative route. The weight restriction will be suspended through Thurcaston but I have asked the Highway Authority to speak to both the developers in Anstey to see if they can limit the amount of HGV’s coming to their sites during the closure period. The other issue is the Centrebus 154 service. This will be unable to travel through Anstey while the closure is in place. At the time of print, I am still waiting for an update on what level of service the residents of Anstey will have, as this is the only service to Loughborough. If you regularly use this service, I would advise that you check the Centrebus website: http://www.centrebus. info/Pages/default.aspx under the service disruptions tab to keep updated or to contact me directly.

Following the sad death of County Councillor Ernie White in January, there have been some changes made to the Cabinet at Leicestershire County Council. Pam Posnett CC will be taking over the Health and Wellbeing portfolio and new to the Cabinet is Louise Richardson CC who will take over the Equalities, Communities and Rural Affairs portfolio. I have also been promoted to Vice Chairman of the Children and Families Overview Scrutiny Committee.

Residents’ Surgery Thank you to everyone who came to my Residents’ Surgery on Saturday 17th February. It was a very busy morning with over 10 groups of residents attending to highlight issues and I have started working on these issues. Chatting to local residents is a part of my role that I really enjoy and is important to me. Thank you to Cllr Snartt who popped in to say hello and also the Ann Irving, the Clerk from Woodhouse Eaves Parish Council for also calling in.

Parking Myth Buster…. • Double Yellow Lines > You are not allowed to park on double yellow lines but you can park to load and unload for a limited period on double yellow lines as long as there is not a no loading restriction on those yellow lines. Double yellow lines also cover the pavement area as this is classed as part of the highway so you can be fined for parking on a pavement beside a road that has double yellow lines • Blue Badge Holders > Can park on double yellow lines for a limited period of time but they cannot park on double yellow lines that have a no loading restriction in place

• Pavement Parking > Pavement parking is not illegal as long as it is not causing an obstruction. If there is not enough room for pedestrians to walk on the pavement, not enough room for pushchairs/wheelchairs/ scooters to pass on the pavement safely and they are forced to walk on a busy road this is a police matter. The police can get a car removed for causing an obstruction on the pavement but the obstruction must be severe and cause a danger for path users. • If your driveway is obstructed and you cannot leave your property this is an obstruction and you can call the police to get the vehicle removed. If you return to your property and your driveway is obstructed and you cannot assess your driveway this is not obstruction and there is nothing the police can do • Resident/Business Permit Parking Zones > these are designed to help residents and businesses to park close to their homes or business and make it more difficult for nonresidents to park. In areas where 40% of residents have off street parking a permit parking scheme will not be considered. Resident Permit schemes also have to be self-funding, so there needs to be enough residents paying into the scheme to cover the costs of the permits and enforcement patrols. Permit parking does not reserve or guarantee spaces exclusively for each permit holder or their visitors. If you have any issues or concerns, I’m here to help.

THE MONDAY CLUB CROPSTON AND THURCASTON

The Monday Club held its Annual General Meeting on 12th February. Copies of the previous AGM were circulated, along with the financial statement. The Club Leader/Secretary summarised business matters for the members, including our financial position, and said that we had had a successful year characterised by friendship and camaraderie. In addition to our regular membership of about 24 people we have welcomed several visitors. We have a regular source of publicity for the club, with illustrated posters to advertise the meetings placed strategically around the nearby villages, and several magazines accept articles about the talks each month, which cover a wide variety of topics. Speakers for a charity have always been willingly supported by the members. Word of mouth also helps to make people aware of our activities.

were asked whether anyone else wished to join the existing Committee, but so far there are no volunteers. The Committee Members are all willing to continue for the coming year, which was agreeable to those present and confirmed by a show of hands.

LEICESTERSHIRE A HERITAGE AT RISK

The programme for 2018 was explained in detail. Then several members read poems of their own choice, which was received with applause. We enjoyed our usual tea/coffee and cakes, and the afternoon concluded with a couple of light-hearted quizzes, crowned with the presentation of chocolates to the winning table.

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club The Secret life of the Honey Bee Our speaker for the February meeting of the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club was local bee keeper, Graham Law, talking about The Secret Life of the Honey Bee. People have been keeping bees for a very long time. For example, medieval monks kept them for honey and used the bees wax to make candles. There are many species of bees and it is often difficult to distinguish them. It is easy to tell bumble bees from honey bees, but it is not so easy to tell bees from wasps. Graham made the point that wasps are not naturally aggressive and are a gardener’s friend, despite their ‘bad press’. Honey bees produce honey for food over the winter and to feed their young, but they always produce more than they need. There is one queen in a colony, and she is the mother of all the bees. The colony gets its characteristics from the genetics of the queen. They might be hard working or lazy or aggressive, or they might steal from others. A queen can live for five years, but bee keepers

tend to keep them for just one year replacing them annually; always hoping for a good queen. During the spring the queen lays eggs 24 hours a day, these develop into the workers and drones. Workers are always female, they collect the pollen and make honey for all of their short six week lives. There can be between 2000 and 35,000 workers in a colony of bees. Drones are always male and their role is to mate with the queen. Once the drones have mated with the queen, they die or are killed by the workers. The behaviour of honey bees is amazing. For example, they produce a ‘dance’ in front of the hive which tells others in the colony the location of a good source of food. Bees will fly up to five miles to collect pollen for the colony. Honey bees have been affected by the parasite Varroa in recent years, which weakens the bees and makes them more susceptible to disease. Bee keepers all over the country need to be on the alert for this. Graham’s talk was fascinating, absorbing, humorous, and very well received by the Club members. He showed a number of photographs and images throughout his talk. He also showed a number of video clips of aspects of bee keeping, such as, a queen laying eggs, the bee ‘dance’, drones being killed, and the bee keeper collecting honey.

The talk created a lot of interest and questions, and many members bought Graham’s honey to take home. Indeed, there was a real ‘buzz’ in the audience. The gardening club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall Whether an experienced gardener or an enthusiastic beginner we are sure you will find something of interest in this year’s programme. New members are made most welcome. What’s more, it is excellent value!! The membership fee is still only £12 for the year or £3.00 per meeting. And, if you would like to come as a visitor and then you decide to join, your visitor fee will be refunded!! So, if you are interested in gardening - come and give the Club a try.

The next club events are:Wednesday 14 March, 7.45 pm Gardens of the National Trust - Alan Tyler A view of National Trust gardens through the ages and an overview of work carried out in them. Friday 23 March Trip to Ashwood Nurseries, Kingswinford, nr. Birmingham £22.00 A few spaces left at the time of writing. POLICEMATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 25th January 2018 and 21st February 2018. Protect your vehicle. Don’t give thieves an easy ride. Leicestershire Police takes vehicle crime very seriously and understand the effects of such crime can be distressing and cause a lot of inconvenience for the owner. The more security you are able put in and around your vehicle, the less attractive it will be to thieves. Always look for products recommended by Thatcham or Sold Secure, as these meet certain attack test standards. Consider adopting some of the following security measures in order to try to reduce your likelihood of becoming a victim of future crime.

Crime Figures 18th Dec 2017 to 24th Jan 2018 Burglary Dwelling – 1 (Including attempts) Burglary - 0 (non Dwelling) (Business Premises, Shed, Garage, Etc) Theft of Motor Vehicle – 1 (inc Attempts) – Theft from Motor Vehicle - 2 (inc Attempts) –

The fraudster is generally very convincing and they will claim that they are investigating the bank. They will ask the victim to withdraw an amount of money which they will ask to be given to a courier or left in a certain place as part of a sting operation Please be aware that the police, your bank and phone provider will never telephone you and ask you to withdraw money. Also be aware that they will never telephone a customer and ask for their bank account details. If you receive one of these calls then contact the bank, police or Phone Company immediately. Don’t use the number that the caller gives you and use a different phone to call them because these criminals can often still be on the line but make it sound as if they have put the phone down. If you don’t have a second phone that you can call from then please ask a neighbour to phone them for you. If anybody has any information about the recorded crimes then please speak with your local officers, or if you have any information at all about crime please call CRIMESTOPPERS. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. Just call – 0800 555 111

ANSTEY WI It is not often that the speaker at a WI meeting appears in a nun’s habit, and then whips it off to reveal a glittery cocktail dress beneath. This was entertainer Our Flossie opening her act with a tribute to “Sister Act.” It was quite a surprise to one whose first thought at the sight of the habit was “The Sound of Music!”

More things to learn for Bradgate Beaver Scouts If you thought that Scouting was a bit 'knots and dib dib dib', think again.

Several costume changes (reverse striptease as she put it) took us through a varied programme including a 1930s jazz club and the great American songbook. The most fun, though, were the Latin American section, when she dressed as a man, complete with a chest wig, and danced (comically) samba style, and her tribute to Shirley Bassey, when her gurning had us helpless with laughter. It was all great fun, and since laughter is good for health, we all left feeling much better. What more can you ask on a cold and rainy February evening? At the meeting on 14th March Canon Alan Haycock will give a talk entitled “Confessions of a Country Vicar. Laughter is once again guaranteed. We meet in the Jubilee Hall at 7.30pm. Visitors are always welcome. The entrance fee of £4 includes tea or coffee and biscuit.

Over the past couple of weeks Bradgate Beaver Scouts have taken part in activities ranging from fencing with the amazing Steve from Leicester Fencing Club, to editing and being in their own mini movie at Apple, Highcross with Leon, Alice and the awesome team there.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk The grey skies of February will hopefully be giving way to brighter days in March, already the daffodils in my garden are shyly showing their heads, and the nights grow slightly lighter as days go by (About 17minutes per week). Since coming out of hospital I have been convalescing at home. It’s a bit of a struggle but I think and stay positive. I have been to see how the developments within Anstey are progressing’ Never a great believer on building on prime green field sites but the plans committee at Charnwood decided the 3 projects major would be ok. The houses on the Bloor development at Cropston Road are really shooting up; let’s hope they are quality build Not Quantity build. I am impressed with the road improvements made at the top of Anstey Lane near to the allotments. And the new roundabout should slow the traffic down a little. I have also looked at the new build on Gynsill Lane. Despite best efforts to get this application turned down the recommendation was passed to build 74 dwelling on one of the wettest fields in Anstey. If you are considering purchasing then please be aware of the problem.

Wembley Bound? Good to see Leicester City FC progress to the last 8 of the FA cup (the oldest cup competition in the World) although we have home advantage it is against Chelsea so “The Foxes” will have to be on top form to get through to the semi-finals. They have been to Wembley on 4 occasions in the FA Cup. 1949 Wolves. 1961 Spurs. 1963 Man United. 1969 Man City, but lost every time. Anstey residents the late Jimmy Harrison played in 1949 and Bobby Roberts who lives on Bradgate Road

played in the 1-0 defeat by Man City in 1969.

Basketballers The Leicester Riders have reached the finals of the BBL Trophy competition beating London Lions on aggregate. The Leicester Riders are the oldest operating basketball team in Britain. Officially known as the Jelson Homes Leicester Riders for sponsorship reasons, they were formed by students and lecturers at Loughborough University and were a founder member of the BBL in 1987. They play at the Leicester Arena. The riders have been led by coach Rob Paternostro for over 300 games. He comes from Waterbury, Connecticut.

Leicester Tigers. After a woeful run of defeats the county’s senior rugby team got back to winning ways with a home win over Harlequins. They still have a chance of making the top four and the play-offs but they need a lot of luck. The 6 nations continues to be led by Engerland, let’s believe we can repeat last year’s grand slam…Come on ENGLAND.

Anstey Nomads FC. They continue to be a force in the East midlands counties league and remain 3rd. behind Selston and Teversal but with 2 games in hand. One of the best supported teams in the league why not come down to the updated Cropston road ground and cheer the “Noisy Nomads” on.? Saturday games start at 3pm. Mid-week 7.45pm. weather permitting.

It’s all at the COOP? A host of community groups in the Charnwood area are set to receive funding from the Coop Community Fund. Sound good? It is! Anstey & Glenfield Cricket Club received a £1,600 grant a little while back to

help towards the purchase of a new mower. However this time in the list of beneficiaries there are sadly NO organisations within the “Your Local Area” ☹ Nationwide the scheme has been of benefit to over 8,000 organisations since Its launch in 2016. In the latest list the nearest group to be awarded a grant was Birstall Playgroup for children with special needs. Come on you locals get down to “Your Local” Coop and get some information.

CBC Scheme Charnwood borough Council have opened a new email bulletin service called “Charnwood NOW!” it will keep residents better informed with what’s going on in the area and at the Council. I am told its quick and easy to sign up and you can unsubscribe whenever you want. To keep up to date with whats going on in your Borough, go to:www.charnwood.gov.uk/charnwood_now. Then again you could give me a ring..

Nook Car Park. “New”. After a little bit of friendly persuasion I have managed to secure a new Disabled parking spot outside the toilets at the Nook car park in Anstey. Thanks to Charnwood Officer Karl Harrison for is cooperation. Talking of COOP and parking. In the conditions of the original agreement to build the new store it was agreed by all parties that anyone could park their car during opening hours and NOT BE OBLIGED to use the shop, in that time. It’s a bit of extra walking but that was the agreement. The extra exercise will do you good?

Seat belts! You know it makes sense to do so everytime you go out for a drive in your vehicle.

Touring side visiting Anstey for day of Rugby

Sunday 6th May this year is Anstey RFC's President's Day, an all day event. First off Letchworth RFC are sending a touring side to our village where we will have an early kick off game before the big event involving the President's team which is a team made up from friends in other clubs across Leicestershire.

The day carries on at our Clubhouse in the Coach and Horses on Leicester Road in Anstey till very late. Food will be provided, Entertainment will be provided and the sunshine is coming. (subject to help from above)

You will just need two bring yourself, your wife, your girlfriend and any offspring to this family day event. Yet again late January into February there have been a number of cancelled games, both by our proposed opposition and ourselves due one side or the other being unable to field a full team. A mixture of injuries and work commitments were the main causes. With the 21st century 7 day a week economy a reality, the old days of Monday to Friday working and Saturdays guaranteed off for playing sport are a thing of the past. At the time of writing, the latest match for Anstey RFC was away at Shepshed on 17th February where we took a squad of 17 players. A lack of match fitness after a couple of call off over the previous weeks told on the Anstey side who scored 17 points courtesy of tries from Sean Elliot and Matt Belcher. The downside was that a stronger Shepshed team scored 52 points. There was a some positives to be taken from the game and the negatives will be worked on during Tuesday night’s training session before we host Oakham on 24th February. Plenty of room on the touchline for as many supporters as possible. The Oakham game will be the last 2:15pm kick off, with start times reverting to 3pm form 3rd March until 27th October. Regular training is every Tuesday from 7pm at Link Road and new players of all abilities are always welcome. Details for all the club officials are on the Anstey RFC noticeboard inside The Coach and Horses (at the car park end). Or call our Captain Liam Curtis on 07727 118362 Or visit www.pitchhero.com/clubs/anstey

Castle Hill - In Search of the Knights Hospitallers. Mathew Morris from University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) visited Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society to tell us about the community archaeology dig which has been run at Castle Hill in Beaumont Leys. In 2016 and 2017, Leicester City Council and ULAS conducted the dig as part of the Story of Parks project, a two-year Heritage Lottery-funded project. The aims were to increase understanding of the origins and development of Castle Hill with the help of local volunteers, involving 2 weeks on site in 2016 and 2017. Firstly it was believed Castle Hill might have prehistoric or Roman origins. Later it was thought it could be a medieval estate of the Knights Hospitallers The land was held by the earls of Leicester until Simon de Montfort granted it to the Knights Hospitallers in the mid-13th century, and it was held by them between c.1240 and 1482. The Hospitallers were a militant monastic order set up to provide hospitality to and protect pilgrim routes to the Holy Land. Later it became a royal deer park but was disparked by Henry VIII in 1526 into private ownership, with no sign of later occupation until the 19th and 20th century when it was used as a sewage treatment site. Today, it is part of the Castle Hill Country Park and has protection as an ancient monument. Following a 2015 geophysical survey by ULAS, volunteers were involved in digging 3 trenches in 2016 and 5 in 2017. Trench 1 included a metalled surface running along the inside of the bank, the bank itself and the ditch and some evidence of an entranceway. Trench 2 unearthed stone kerbing, a land drain and stone surfaces that may have been a pond. In Trench 3 stone rubble, broken roof slates and medieval pottery were uncovered, and some signs of iron working. In 2017 the first 3 trenches were reopened, trench 3 finding further evidence of the footprint of the building including the paved yard with a stone hearth. Iron slag suggests it was used as a smithy. In a well, a high water table has preserved wood that was probably timbers from the building. These are being conserved for further examination. Overall, the finds agree with the dates of the occupation of the site by the Knights Hospitallers. The excavations show that damage from the sewage farm was minimal, with the medieval earthwork very well preserved; the enclosure comprises a large ditch and stone-built bank; inside, at least one building had a slate roof and glazed ridge-tiles, suggesting it was more than a simple farm building, and had more than one use. Pottery finds are consistent with occupation on the site between 1240 and 1484 and there is no evidence of earlier or later occupation, with the site probably being abandoned and demolished in the 15th century. Much of the excavated material is still being examined and catalogued. The trenches have been covered but it is planned to make an application for more funding with the hope of returning to the site in 2019. If sucessful Mathew promised to return with an update. The next meeting will take place in the Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church, Thurcaston, on Tuesday 20th March, at 7.30pm. Brenda Hooper will talk about Thurcaston: Kings Briefs - parish charity. Visitors are welcome. http://www.thurcastoncropstonhistory.org.uk
