Cut-price compost bins available for Leicestershire residents AS THE TIDYING-UP of gardens starts apace across Leicestershire, residents are being encouraged to compost their garden waste.

Each year, Leicestershire residents produce more than 300,000 tonnes of rubbish and recyclables. Around 22 per cent of which is uncooked fruit, vegetables and garden waste that could have been composted rather than binned. To help, we are currently offering cut-price compost bins to help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

“Composting is a great way to feed your garden, it is better for the environment and, if you’re normally a compost buyer, you’ll also be saving money.” Compostable items include fruit and vegetable peelings, grass cuttings, coffee grounds, tea leaves, newspapers and cardboard boxes which will all decompose in a matter of months. The resulting compost can then be dug back into the garden to provide nutritious soil for budding crops.

Leicestershire residents can pick up a compost bin at a subsidised price, from only £10.98. The bins are made from recycled plastic, adding to their environmental credentials.

Bradgate Bridge Club 50th Annniversary
FILM PRESENTATIONS
Bradgate Bridge Club, who play at the Rothley Centre on a Monday and Wednesday, celebrated their 50th anniversary at a lunch at the Grey Lady in Newtown Linford on 28th March. Over 100 of the 150 members were able to attend.
Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council
The Club was founded back in 1968, when a group of social bridge players decided to put their bridge onto a more formal footing. It has met at the Rothley Court and the Reservoir pub (now the Badgers Sett) over the years, but pub landlords found that members didn’t drink as Margaret Butterworth – much as expected (bridge requires a certain degree of Chairman, with Monica Lucas concentration!) and so the Club was ‘moved on’, first to Rothley Village Hall and then to The Rothley Centre when the Centre was built in 1981. Among the guests were Sue Tyler, daughter of the founder member Howard Tyler; she is now a bridge teacher and a keen member of the Club. Also present was the Club’s oldest member, Monica Lucas (93), who still turns out for the league teams on occasion – proof indeed that bridge keeps the mind sharp!
In April's inspiring true story, "Breathe", Robin contracted polio as a young man. He was aided miraculously by his wife and friends to lead a full, passionate and adventurous life. This film deserved to win it's award, "Heartland Truly Moving Picture". "Whisky Galore" will be shown on May 11th and lasts 98 minutes. Our audience enjoys comedy so May's British film is a comedy drama based on a true story, written by Compton Mackenzie. Set on the northern coast of Aberdeenshire during World War 11, there is a shortage of food and alcohol. However, a wrecked cargo vessel is carrying 50,000 cases of whisky. Not only the crew but the whisky needs rescuing. Where can the villagers hide the whisky and how can Mrs Campbell's son court the postmaster's daughter? This film will be a pleasure to watch. "Darkest Hour" will be shown on June 8th and lasts 125 minutes.
General 50th party group – presentation of flowers to the organising committee
Starring Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas, June’s biographical drama is set during the early part of World War 11. Winston Churchill must decide whether to negotiate peace with Hitler or fight against him. He displays an extravagant sense of humour but how much is his wife responsible for whom he became? This film has won Golden Globes, six Academy Award nominations, Oscar nominations and actually won the Bafta Award for Leading Actor. There will be no films during July and August. We hope you will enjoy your summer break. đ&#x;™‚đ&#x;™‚ Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Film tickets will cost ÂŁ5 which will include refreshments and a lucky prize draw during the interval. Advanced tickets may be purchased via the parish office –0116 236 7626 or at the door.

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Dedicated Neighbourhood Policing Team. A Warning for the Elderly On 19 April, at least two elderly Charnwood residents were contacted by criminals who claimed to be police officers and asked them to withdraw large amounts of money from their bank accounts. In one of these cases the victim followed the instructions and handed over a large amount of money to the criminals. We would urge local residents to be wary of such scams. The police and other agencies will never telephone and ask you to withdraw or transfer money from your bank. If you receive an unsolicited call from the police, gas board, bank or any other agency then take their name and contact details then telephone their organisation or company. Please be wary though, these criminals can make it sound as if you have disconnected the call and phoned a different number when in fact you are still on the line to them. Use a different phone (mobile phone or neighbour’s) and ring their main switchboard (from Yellow Pages or a utility bill), not the number that the person ringing gives you. If in doubt, telephone the police.
For any residents with elderly relatives or neighbours, please be aware of this scam and keep an eye on your relatives or neighbours – these criminals are very convincing. Holiday Safety It is coming to that time of year again when lots of us are planning on jetting away in the coming months for some holiday sun. Let’s protect our homes as best as we can before we go! Most burglaries occur when there is no-one home, so whether you are leaving the house for a few minutes, the day or a fortnight, remember to shut and lock all your windows and doors. By now most of us are in a habit of making sure windows and doors are closed and locked on our vehicles and houses when we leave them, but in the excitement of going away, we can sometimes forget. If you have locks on your windows and a burglar alarm installed to your property it is important you use them. It is advised you always try to make your home appear occupied. Here are some steps you can take to ensure this: • Get a friend, neighbour or relative to keep an eye on your house or flat. Even the smallest of jobs such as collecting post
from the letterbox, sweeping up leaves, putting dustbins out and even mowing your lawn, can make it seem as though someone is home. • Cancel deliveries of milk and newspapers while you are away, as a clutter of these around your front door, becomes a clear sign that nobody is home. • Invest in some automatic time switches, which switch lights and radios on and off at set times. • Never leave blinds or curtains closed as this makes it obvious the property is empty during the day. Crime Figures Unfortunately we will no longer be including the crime figures for Anstey in the ‘Your Local Magazine’ due to time constraints. We will still be including crime prevention advice and to raise awareness of problematic crimes. You can still get the figures online at https://www.police.uk/leicestershire/NL58/ PS 2992 Rod Smart/PCSO 6556 Ali Cochrane/ PCSO 6093 Mitch Jarvis Beat NL58 - Anstey Charnwood Dedicated Neighbourhood Team Leicestershire Police

GOT AN ARTICLE TO SEND US?
“Ruffle the Rail Dog
Rachel and her husband support the local Joe Humphries Trust, having known his parents and also Joe himself. One story the parents suggested involved Ruffle saving a life. Although Rachel’s canine hero does not have superpowers, he does carry a message to ask for help, which reflects the actual training of Airedales during the First World War. Mr and Mrs Humphries have donated a large quantity of the Ruffle books to Leicestershire schools.
For our April meeting we had the pleasure of listening to Rachel Greaves, local author and illustrator, assisted by her husband Alan. (They stood in at short notice as our booked speaker was unwell.) Rachel explained how she was inspired by their dog, an Airedale called Hovis, who loved looking out onto the garden, to begin thinking of adventures which an intelligent dog could possibly enjoy, and which she began to write down for primary school age children. Many factors contributed to the story plots; the family lives near the steam railway, and their grown up children have worked on the trains.
Rachel not only did the illustrations for her books, she also created hand puppets of the station master and other figures, including a carousel horse. Now she and her husband have painted and fitted out a large model of a train engine and carriage, on rails, which looked wonderful. When they go into schools and talk about the books and characters there is usually great interest, and teachers can use these as a theme for lessons of all kinds, such as doing a “Ruffle walk in the countryside. Please see the “Ruffle website for more information.
Rachel was a teacher of English and drama, and has had some of her work published in local magazines. As a child she loved reading about the adventures of the collie, Black Bob from the weekly “Dandyâ€?, and she still has her Black Bob annual which she passed around (I loved mine too!). We were all told to close our eyes and then “Ruffleâ€? himself suddenly appeared, as if by magic ‌
Monday Club meetings start at 2.15pm on the second Monday of each month. New members and visitors are very welcome to future meetings (please see local posters for details). There are still places left for our coach outing on 14th May to the beautiful Trentham Gardens. The next topic, on 11th June, will be all about “Holidays at home and abroad for the Blind.
She decided to try writing a series of short books based on local events, but she does not use real place names, or tie them to a specific time period, which broadens their appeal. Some books include stories in verse, or colouring pages, and others involve exciting events such as a teddy bears’ picnic, or the arrival of the fair, and a “red suited man (inspired by the Santa Special steam train) who saves a dog from a frozen pond.

David Snartt Reports... Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate
Planning Update Last month I made reference to Charnwood Borough Council refusing planning permission for 9 dwellings on land adjacent to Briscoe Lane, Woodhouse, and that the applicant had appealed that decision to the Secretary of State, Planning Inspectorate. I have now sent a submission to the Planning Inspectorate outlining my concerns and objections, which, in my view, support the refusal. The main thrust of my submission was outlined within the Charnwood Local Plan, Core Strategy. Woodhouse is in the small villages and hamlets category which states: these villages have much less potential to provide for a sustainable community where people can access what they need by walking, cycling and public transport. These villages are therefore poor locations for new development. I also noted that, in my opinion, Charnwood Borough Council is committed to provide levels of housing growth aligned to the Core Strategy, Looking at the number of homes for the rest of the Borough (in which Woodhouse is designated in the Core Strategy) the number of dwellings built and with planning permission are already significantly above the planned housing numbers. If you are interested in reading my submission in full it is on the Charnwood Borough Council website, along with others under planning application number P/17/1984/2. I will let you know the outcome of the appeal when the decision is known. I have had a site meeting with a nearby neighbour and planning officers about the planning application for two affordable homes on land adjacent to Lady Martin Drive, Woodhouse Eaves. Planning officers have now taken away the concerns and objections on a number of matters raised at the meeting and will be reviewing these during the planning process. For my part, I recall when the previous 8 dwellings were granted
10
planning permission on this site, it was stated: The relative isolation of the site from the community services in the village and limiting the impact of the development and the number of dwellings makes an offsite provision justifiable. Therefore, in my view, the agreement was to deliver two affordable dwellings nearer to the village centre, this should continue to be the best outcome. I know this application is of great concern to the residents living in this part of the village, I have already asked for this application to be determined by a Planning Committee. Last month, I also made reference to the pre-application meeting for development on Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves. Although it still has an invalid status on the Charnwood Borough Council web site, there is now an outline planning application for the erection of up to 50 dwellings and associated works. The application number is P/18/0715/2. Once this becomes a valid application there will be time to register your comments through the consultation process. I am also grateful to the Parish Council for agreeing to a Public Meeting at the appropriate time. Judging by the large attendance at the last meeting, I am sure this application will have a lot of interest, I will keep you informed on progress through the planning process.
Bus Services 120and 154 I was pleased to see County Councillor Deborah Taylor made reference to the Passenger Transport Policy and Strategy consultation, carried out by Leicestershire County Council. I believe it is vitally important that residents who use the two bus services running through my Ward respond to the current consultation. The 120 service between Leicester and Coalville travelling through Newtown Linford,
all of these journeys are fully funded by the County Council, therefore are included in the consultation. The 154 service between Leicester and Loughborough travelling through Woodhouse Eaves and Woodhouse, some of the journeys are part funded, the last bus to Quorn during the week and all journeys on Saturdays. Please make sure if you use these services you respond to the consultation by the closing date of 13th June. It is important that your views are taken into consideration when the final decisions are made. The details are on the County Council website, paper copies are also available on request by telephoning 0116 305 0002.
Traffic Management, Newtown Linford I continue to bring to the attention of local agencies the current issues with visitors to Bradgate Park parking their vehicles on village streets. I have further evidence from residents and visitors, supporting my opinion that the root causes of the current unacceptable situation lies fair and square with the Bradgate Park Trust. In my view, there are two issues, the capacity of the Newtown Linford car park, especially on Sundays when the weather is fine and sunny and the all-day parking tariff. Visitors tell me they are objecting to pay for all day charges when they are visiting the park for a short time. This has become apparent with visitors parking their vehicles on Bradgate Road when there are many unoccupied spaces in the car park. I have confirmation from residents that this has only occurred since the tariff changed to all-day. Adding weight to this opinion, I note over Easter when the temporary parking restrictions were in place on Bradgate Road, this only moved the problem further along to outside the Parish boundary. This again, in my opinion is causing highway safety issues as many vehicles were parked on the footway path. I have sent this photograph to the Police, Borough and County Councils so they are aware of the continuing problems. As I have indicated before I will continue to press for a satisfactory solution to the current situation which is causing so much distress and

inconvenience to local residents.
I have also attended a meeting of the recently formed Residents Group, set up to understand the way forward with this matter, I was delighted to see the work they have already completed, which I am sure will be of great help in providing more detail and solutions.
Charnwood Tourism Guide I note the detail in the new Tourism Guide for visitors to Charnwood, which states: we would encourage visitors from further afield to pick up a copy to plan their visit to the Borough. Bradgate Park is one of the venues included in a recent Charnwood Borough Council press release and supported by the Lead Member. Therefore I have put forward a question at the next full Council meeting which states: Bradgate Park Trust are unable to accommodate the present number of visitors
travelling by car in their car park at Newtown Linford, manifesting in illegal and dangerous parking on the village streets and beyond. This causing highway safety issues and distress to village residents demonstrated in the attached photographs. As the Lead Member supports more tourism to Bradgate would he indicate:1. What plans does he have to support village residents to overcome the present parking problems, which, in my view, will continue to escalate, especially with extra promotions and social media exposure: 2. Would the Lead Member meet with the Bradgate Park Trust to understand more fully the root causes, especially the car park capacity and the current charging tariff which contributes to the increasing problems experienced over the past two years. 3. Report back to this Council with solutions to overcome the current unacceptable situation. If we support more tourism we need to have the right infrastructure in place to overcome the parking issues associated with the increasing visitor numbers.
Betty Blythe It was with great sadness that I learnt of the passing of Betty. It was apparent from the many people of all ages attending the service of celebration of Betty’s life that she touched so many people’s lives. This through the many years in the teaching profession, helping and encouraging so many young people, especially ones with special needs. She had

this rare gift of being able to communicate with young people no matter what the circumstances of the individual person she was helping. I saw first-hand her dedication to education when we were both Governors at the village primary school, Betty was always looking to make a difference, making sure we did everything possible to help every child reach their full potential.in a caring environment. Betty was also involved in village life, being a keen gardener she maintained, along with her husband Nigel, the various planters around the village, making sure they always looked their very best. Life on the Lane will never be quite the same, I will miss our many conversations, especially about politics, Lincolnshire sausages and gardening.

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club M
Visit to Ashwood Nursery and Echium The Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club held its first day trip at the end of March to Ashwood Nurseries, Kingswinford, near Birmingham.
With 37 different Echium to choose from, there must be one for your garden too. The gardening club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall
The Nursery has a world-wide reputation for a number of specialist plants but none more dramatic than their cultivation of hellebores. The trip also included a tour of ‘John’s Garden’. Owner John Massey has created a beautiful private three acre garden on the banks of the Staffordshire & Worcestershire canal which boasts many innovative design features.
Echium originate in the Canary Isles and come in many different forms from 20 foot giants lasting a few years to smaller, annual plants. They are particularly loved by bees, they are attracted by the constant flow of nectar and the multitude of pink, mauve, and blue flowers. The Heywoods assured us that there is an Echium for every garden, whether it is the original native Vipers bugloss, or a 20-foot giant taking three years to flower.
Members and guests found inspiration from the garden visit, and also from the stunning display gardens and greenhouses. They were also able to relax in the delightful Tea Room. Our April meeting was all about Echium; entitled ‘In the land of the Giants’ Linda and Ray Heywood hold the National Collection of Echium at their nursery in Nottingham. Despite the fact that these amazing plants originate from Tenerife and Madeira with a warm and moist climate, they have learned how to adapt the plants to a rainy midlands weather system. They introduced us to the world of these amazing plants with a joint presentation. Ray took us through the range of Echium to be found in gardens in this Country and around the world. Linda described their journey from total amateurs to successful nursery owners with a range of awards gathered at shows around the Country and a number of celebrity customers and supporters.

We are still waiting for a change in the weather, hoping for some sunshine very soon, which has just arrived as I am due to send off my report! I hope you all managed to get some rest over Easter and ate plenty of chocolate. I called into the Mash and Press ‘pop up pub’ in Anstey on Easter Saturday opened by Anstey Ale Brewery. We decided to take the dog for his first pub visit and he did very well! The pub was packed and I managed to try a couple of half’s of ciders before the dog decided it was time to go. It was very busy and I understand they had a busy 3 days over the Easter weekend. I enjoyed a visit to Welbeck Defence 6th Form College, Woodhouse. Welbeck is a co-educational full boarding college, where students are funded by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) on a means tested basis. It offers an ‘A level’ education to preselected students following a career as Technical or Engineering Officers within the armed forces or the MOD civil service and is the only facility in the country offering this opportunity. I attended the Plans Committee at Charnwood Borough Council on 5th April to speak on the application for 46 houses on the old Brookside Nursery site on Cropston Road, Anstey. The application was refused by the committee due to the lack of affordable houses being provided on site. There was one proposed bungalow on site that would be classed as affordable housing. There is still an approved application for 36 houses that includes 11 affordable houses on this site. On Wednesday 18th April, after a long day of meetings, I called into Anstey Community Library to enjoy Anstey Local History Society WW2 Community Sharing Day. I was informed
it had been steady all day, with many visitors enjoying the displays and meeting up with friends for tea and cake. I enjoyed looking at all the memorabilia and all the old photos of families from Anstey. I particularly enjoyed viewing Brian Kibble’s car that was parked outside of the library for the day.
• Ensure the rear of the property is secure by erecting fencing and locked gates • Install security lighting The Police advised that the above advice could help to deter burglars from targeting your property. The advice was to also look out for any suspicious activity and make sure you report the activity to the Police on 101 or 999 if a crime is in progress.
Cropston Road, Anstey
Swithland Public Meeting On Tuesday 17th April, I attended a public meeting in Swithland arranged by the Parish Meeting Chairman with Sargent Rod Smart and PC Rachel Chapman attending to represent the Police. Swithland has been suffering from a large amount of burglaries this year and the meeting was called to get residents together to discuss how to try to combat these crimes. The Police gave updates on how the investigations were going and a description of a man acting suspiciously in the village from February. The Police gave some very useful advice about how to try to protect your property and deter burglars, which I thought I would share with you. • Ensure all windows and doors are locked • Consider installing CCTV • Consider installing a burglar alarm
We had a couple of difficult weeks with this road closure. There were a few issues highlighted to me. I understand that some vehicles had been ignoring the road closure and driving on the pavement, putting pedestrians at risk. Some of the grass verges have been left in a mess and this has been reported to the Highways Department for them to rectify. The diversion route was flooded due to the high rainfall and I have asked for the drains to be checked. There were also some potholes highlighted to me and they are on the list for repair. Thank you to everyone who did respect the road closure and followed the diversion route and to the residents who contacted me to inform me of the above issues.
Bradgate Road, Newtown Linford The emergency temporary traffic regulation order to restrict parking on Bradgate Road for 2 weeks over Easter was largely adhered to. This did push some parking into the 60mph area between Anstey and Newtown Linford, not a safe place for parking. I am still working closely with Cllr Snartt and the Parish Council to address the parking issues within the village. I am grateful to the group of residents who are collecting data regarding parking and this information will be very useful as we move forward. There is not going to be any overnight solution but I believe we are moving in the

Changes to Garden Waste Charge The garden waste collection provided by Charnwood Borough Council will now cost £40 per year from 1st May 2018. The Council believes this service provides excellent value for money and it plans to freeze the cost for the next two years. The charge is in line with many other authorities and the increase is necessary to make up for a shortfall of funding from other sources and to ensure the quality of service is maintained. In 2015, the Council lost a significant amount of funding when the County Council withdrew recycling credits worth around £300,000 a year, which was used to help cover the costs of the service. The increase in the charge will help to make up that shortfall and cover increases in the costs of providing the service.
Charnwood Borough Council’s Leader Cllr Jonathon Morgan has written his first monthly blog as Leader of Charnwood Borough Council. The Leader feels it is important to talk and listen to residents and therefore he is planning to blog each month to keep you posted about what is going on at the Council. It is entirely non-political and hopefully of interest. You can read his first blog on the following link: https://www. charnwood.gov.uk/pages/leaders_blog Cllr Morgan is interested in people's views so if you want to have a say on any issues raised in the blog, let him know via social media on Twitter or Facebook or drop an email to communications@charnwood.gov.uk.
month following a rigorous tendering process, which involved tenants as well as staff and councillors. The contract is based largely on quality and Fortem were able to demonstrate a big commitment to that as well as customer engagement. The estimated contract value is around £18m over five years and Fortem will install a number of kitchens, bathrooms, heating systems and doors for the Council. Fortem is based in Hertfordshire but will be setting up a base in Charnwood.
Member Grant Scheme The Cabinet at the Borough Council has approved a new grant scheme to spread funding for community groups even further and wider in Charnwood. The Council’s Cabinet considered a proposal on Thursday 12th April 2018 to introduce a Member Grant Scheme, which would see each Borough Councillor allocated £1,000 to award to projects in their wards each year. The Council already commits around £200,000 a year in grants, which are awarded to various community and voluntary projects as well as individuals. The proposal is to allocate another £52,000 for the Member Grant Scheme. The scheme can also make use of members’ local knowledge to identify worthwhile projects and smaller scale projects. Under the proposed scheme, community groups or individuals would apply for the grant through the Borough Council. It will first be checked by council officers and then passed to the Councillor for a decision. The money will be allotted within this financial year and I will provide further updates through my monthly reports on how to apply.
Decent Homes Contract A new contractor has been appointed to deliver the multi-million pound improvements to Charnwood Borough Council homes in Charnwood. Property maintenance firm Fortem has been awarded a five-year contract by Charnwood Borough Council. The Council believes the partnership will make council homes even better in the future. This is one of the Council’s largest contracts and is one of its most important as it makes such a difference to people by improving the quality of their homes. The new contract came into place this

Springtime with Brownies and Guides in Thurcaston and Cropston For the Spring term the girls undertook work for the Hobbies badge as well having fun with celebrating other festivals and an indoor campfire. As we had welcomed new Brownies to our pack and older girls had moved up to join the Guides, we held our special enrolment ceremonies to make our Promises. The Brownies were developing a new hobby of cross stitch and at the same time learning camp fire songs. The Guides were sewing more difficult designs and some girls will carry on with this skill towards the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award. We began by learning about the Bayeux tapestry as a the most famous example of stitch craft and were surprised by the funny cartoon- like depictions it contains eg picking up the dogs to carry them onto the boats. The building of Westminster Abbey was only just completed and the tapestry shows a man up a ladder still fixing the weather cock. Did you know that there is a replica Bayeux tapestry in Reading museum? It is identical to the original except, to avoid Victorian blushes, the nude men were omitted.
they took part: swimming, dancing, art, computer-gaming etc. The Guides began to make two Chinese lions that ‘chase away evil spirits and welcome prosperous times’ to celebrate the Chinese New Year and herald in The Year of the Dog. The lions took several weeks to finish. The task had been divided into painting the enormous colourful cardboard heads and attaching dazzling fabrics to the body frame before fitting heads and bodies together.
When the Brownies made posters, we were surprised by the variety of hobbies in which
For the final meeting of the term the girls brought torches and blankets and built a pretend campfire with wood, coloured tissue and a glowing red light source. Time to turn down the room lights, pretend we are outside and sing those campfire songs we had been learning, followed by hot chocolate and biscuits. The Guides also finished their term with an indoor campfire and a dancing display using their Chinese lions.
Did you lose £20 on the paths behind Waterfield Road in Cropston?. We found the money and from its location assumed it had been dropped by a dog walker. We donated the £20 to RSPCA’s Woodside animal sanctuary.
We were affected by the bad weather having to cancel one meeting and we also had to manage without Brown Owl for a couple of weeks after an operation on her foot. The Brownies celebrated Pancake Day learning to toss pancakes and having relay races using pretend pancakes made from carpet underlay. The Guides braved the cold outside and cooked pancakes using camping stoves called Trangias, a useful skill for those older Guides who have enrolled onto the D of E Award.
Sunday church service which involved activities for children with drinks and biscuits afterwards. Melted chocolate and crumbled shredded wheat formed Easter nests in which to put chocolate mini eggs. While these nests were setting in the fridge we sewed more of our cross stitch designs. I’m not sure if many nests arrived home before being eaten.
February 22nd the joint birth date of Lord and Lady Baden Powell who founded the Scouts and Guides, is also known as Thinking Day and we held a candlelight ceremony to remember Brownies and Guides all over the world. Very professional looking Mother’s Day cards were made by the girls using techniques of different difficulty; decoupage, stamping and 3d folding. We attended the Mothering
We have spaces for new girls to join. We meet on Wednesdays at the church rooms and sometimes at Richard Hill School both in Thurcaston. 6 until 7.15pm for Brownies (age 7+). 7.15 until 8.30pm for Guides (age 10+). There is no requirement for girls to attend the church, or RH school or live in Thurcaston or Cropston. For more details contact Louise Keran on 07711-422350 but avoid work hours please

The Martin High School... “Inspiring to dream more, learn more, do more and become more. We are Martin High School
Martin High School Went Extreme for Sport Relief Raising ÂŁ1,000!
Pet-Xi
On Friday 9th March we held a Pet-Xi maths event with 40 of our year 11 learners. This involved all 40 learners being involved in developing a better understanding of a range of maths topics. The day was very successful with overwhelmingly positive feedback from learners, Pet-xi staff and parents. Many learners feel that has given them a real boost in understanding and helped them feel more confident going into their GCSE exams. A big well done to all the learners for their engagement in the day and the enthusiastic staff from Pet-Xi.
Mr Dickinson 
Assistant Head Teacher/Teacher of Maths
It started on Thursday 22nd March, when The Martin High School in Anstey began to raise     some serious cash for Sport Relief at its 24-hour challenge.Â

• Inspired by Sport Relief celebrity challenges past and present, The Martin High School took    part in their own extreme challenge to raise money for Sport Relief. Students, staff members and the community were asked to run, bike and row continuously for 24 hours without letting the machines stop. The gruelling challenge started on Thursday 22nd at 1:45pm and finished  on Friday 23rd March at 1:45pm.Â
 We are so proud of our students for being a part of something special, with some huge accomplishments. We owe a huge amount of gratitude to the staff at The Martin High School   who helped champion the event and completed lots of sessions on the machines – keeping the equipment going throughout the night. In addition to this, the local community rose to the occasion with an amazing effort in donating both money and time to the cause. You can still donate at www.justgiving.com/martin-high-pe or text MHPE90 £5 to 70070. The £1000 pupils raised this Sport Relief will help to change lives forever. That’s because the charity spends the money raised by the public to give extremely vulnerable and disadvantaged people in Leicestershire, the UK and throughout the world a helping hand to turn their lives around. You can find all the challenge updates, including photos and video footage of the event at Martin High PE on Facebook.

Primary Science Event
On Monday 12th March a group of Year 10 triple science students went to Woolden Hill Primary School, as part of science week. It was a fantastic day where both MHS and Woolden Hill pupils really engaged with Science. Our students helped support the teachers at the primary school through being science ambassadors, and even ran the sessions later in the day. The day was themed around scientists, and the activities were linked to the work these scientists had done. There was a range of activities taking place during the day such as looking at fingerprints, making rockets, investigating sound and making magnetic slime.
A huge thank you from everybody in the PE department for all of your support during our 24 hour challenge.
Our pupils showed real leadership skills, and were spoken very highly of by the primary school.

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello everyone hope you all had a nice Easter break even if it was a bit wet, I know someone who went to the coast to get an early tan and came back rusty! It really has been a wet month so much so that the start of the local cricket leagues in Leicestershire and Rutland have been put back a week to April 21st and our local Anstey Nomads Football Club have a lot of games to pull in before the end of the season (29 at all levels at the last count!)
My “scam” The distressing situation continues, I won’t give up! I know I’m taking on a big bank but I must try. I have written and spoken to our local MP Edward Aggar who is also the Parliamentary private secretary to the home secretary Amber Rudd MP. Thankyou for those who have rang me to offer their sympathy. Just to let you know the café and tearoom, Back 2 R Roots, has had a name change and refurbishment; it is now called Clara’s. Why not drop in and see what they’ve done with the place, it would be rude NOT to try out some of their delicious homemade cakes. For those wondering where it is, it’s next to the newsagent on Link Road, Anstey (Cropston Road end). Lauren Stott will look after you. The 22nd Commonwealth Games came and went I had a few late nights, some more exciting than others. None more so than the amazing women’s netball final when England beat world champions and hosts Australia 52/51 with ONE second left. The closing ceremony could have been shorter I think? Showing my age I suppose but what did the rapper say?? As Steve Cram said, “Not my cup of tea”, and pundit Michael Johnson just smiled and said nothing. Roll on Birmingham in 2022, brilliant dance video accompanied by one of the best songs of all time - ELO’s “Mr
22
Blue Sky”. The Queens 92nd birthday party concert at the Royal Albert Hall is how you put on a show. Not sure how much her majesty liked it but I thought it was very well presented. Good to see the jester from Leicester snooker man Mark Selby back on top form winning the Chinese open recently. I wonder if he read my comments in the last “Your Local?” As you read this the world championship will have started and Mr Selby will be first cue on and hopefully defend his world title over the marathon 17 days…STOP PRESS Selby lost 10-4 to 50/1 outsider Joe “Fred” Perry on the first day of the tournament. A great champagne moment for Joe, perhaps next year will be Mark’s. Locally Anstey Nomads FC continue to impress and will win the East Midlands Counties League if they win their remaining games. It’ll be a great achievement in the club’s 70th year. The reserves are also well placed in Division One of the Leicestershire league… STOP PRESS unfortunately Nomads have lost 2 games on the trot, 2-1 to Dunkirk from Nottingham and a crushing 4-0 defeat to local rivals Birstall Utd. Still a long way to go but the pressures on… “Come on noisy Nomads!”
Garden waste charge UP Unfortunately the garden waste collection provided by Charnwood Borough Council will cost £40 per year from May 1st 2018. The increase is larger than in previous years but these are challenging times for local government funding. In 2015 we lost funding when the County Council withdrew recycling credits worth around £300,000 a year which was used to help cover the costs of the service. The charge is in line with many other Local Authorities and the increase is necessary
to make up for a shortfall of funding from other sources, cover increasing costs and and ensure the quality of service is maintained. The service does provide excellent value for money and the plan is to freeze the cost for the next two years. The garden waste scheme is very popular with over 34,000 subscriptions. There will be further challenges ahead as recycling credits which contribute to the general household recycling service are being withdrawn by the County Council this year, a loss of £500,000 to Charnwood Borough Council. Despite this we will still offer free bulky waste collections to Charnwood residents, while many other local authorities charge £15 or more. The new charge will come into effect on May 1st 2018 so anyone subscribing for the first time before then can take advantage of the existing charge of £28. Existing subscribers will be informed directly about the new charge two weeks before their subscription ends. So, be quick and you’ll save money! Take the hassle out of gardening by signing up to our garden waste service now, just visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/gardenwaste.
The Stag! What a great sculpture of a giant stag at the top of the hill leading into Newtown Linford. It was created by artist and sculptor Peter Leadbetter from an old oak tree that had seen better days and had to be felled. It stands around 3 metres high, took 8 days to complete with the aid of a chainsaw and is in homage to the deer that have roamed in Bradgate Park for many centuries. The stunning artwork was commissioned by Newtown Linford Parish Council. Bit spooky on a dark night after midnight if the streetlights go out.

New business website is launched A new website aimed at showcasing Charnwood to businesses around the world has been unveiled. The website is now live at www.incharnwood.com and is an initiative launched last year to market the borough to companies. The site highlights what Charnwood borough can offer businesses, such as a great central location, fantastic transport links and a world class university on its doorstep. Councillor Eric Vardy, Lead Member for Planning and Inward Investment said, “The new website is a shop window for the business world which will be able to see the offer Charnwood can outstanding provide.”
Marathon 2018 London Amblers and Runners Club Team Anstey members Francesca Sutherington and Jon
Sanders
ran in this year’s LONDON MARATHON on Sunday 22nd April. Between them they raised an incredible £8124.00 (and still counting) for local charity LOROS (The Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice). Jon wore number 41928 and came in at 4 hours 43 minutes with Frankie, in number 41925, completing in 5 hours and 37 minutes. Huge well done to both of you, what a brilliant achievement. You can still sponsor Frankie and Jon by going to their Just Giving pages, just go to www.justgiving.com and search for them by name. Every penny counts!
The money raised helps LOROS to continue to provide free care to patients with a terminal illness along with support for their families. Over 2,500 patients access their services each year. £5 could pay for meals for a patient for a day, £10 could pay for collection of a patient from home for day therapy, £700 could pay for the cost of a nurse for one week. Your support really will make a difference to patients and their families, so thank you again Jon and Frankie and all others who ran and raised for this vital charity.
The Nook, Anstey I understand that a safety audit has been completed and some issues were picked up and further improvements are due to be made to The Nook, Anstey. This is waiting for agreement between Highways and the developers.
Fostering, do something amazing! Have you ever thought of becoming a foster carer and fostering a child? If so then Leicestershire County Council are always looking to recruit. For more information visit www.fosteringleicestershire, email fosteringandadoption@leics.gov.uk or simply call 0116 3050505.
Plan turned down Thankfully the plan to build an extra 10 houses on the former Brookside Nurseries site on Cropston Road, Anstey has been turned down by a Plans Committee at Charnwood Borough Council. A scheme had already been passed for 36 homes which included 30% affordable housing but the developers, Barwood Homes, said that this was now not a viable proposition and offered 1 bungalow instead. This would have lost us 9 social houses on the site and probably some open space. The district valuer also agreed with Barwood Homes that the 1 bungalow would be adequate. The April Plans Committee thought differently and turned the application down. Charnwood planning asks for 30% affordable housing on larger sites so that new housing is accessible to all. Anstey Parish Council, amongst others I hope, are fervently objecting to the plan for 43 homes to be built on Gynsill Court, Anstey. Goodness only knows how the developers will get that amount of houses on the site. The

extra traffic that will come with it will also further over-load our already creaking roads, especially at busy times. For those with a long memory we had 2 main routes into Leicester about 25 years ago for a village of around 4,000 residents. Today we have 1 route and over 7,000 residents! Let’s hope the right decision is made at Charnwood Planning.
Lottery Lolly Good to see that the Bradgate Park Trust have been awarded a grant of £39,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. I understand that the grant will go towards a 2 year project to help develop formal and informal learning at both Bradgate Park and Swithland Wood.
New Grant scheme Charnwood Borough Council who already give out over £200,000 per year to individuals, sports clubs and other organisations are looking to spend another £52,000 by giving each local councillor £1,000 to spend on good causes within their ward. I understand that £250 will be the minimum given out but if you need more then you can ask for the whole amount and you can send your groups application to ALL ward councillors, even is it’s a 2 or 3 councillor ward. Don’t all rush at once because officers are still finalising the application form. I am assured it will be simple to fill in. Watch this space. ☺ Congratulations to the 4 organisations who were given £250 each recently at Anstey Parish Council’s Annual Meeting. They were Anstey Latimer Primary School, Anstey Luncheon Club, AWOL (Anstey without Lycra!) and Anstey Swifts Junior Football Club. Good luck. To Anstey Nomads in their quest to lift the East Midlands Counties League for the first time, and Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club in the new cricket season. The sides will be captained by Joe Harris and Bradley Wells who both came through the teams. It will also see the return of another AGCC junior, all-rounder Ryan Stafford, after being side lined for some time through injury. Yours
Cllr. John J. Sutherington ☺☺☺

GOOD NEWS FOR LOCAL FAMILY CARERS Earlier in the year, Local Charity Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland partnered with Dementia Adventures and Cedar Mews Care Home in Birstall held a very well attended, Family Carers Workshop. This workshop was particularly aimed at those Caring for someone living with Dementia and feedback was that it was hugely helpful. Attendees shared during a break that they felt vulnerable being the Main Carer on several levels as they hadn’t chosen the role, or indeed been trained for it! One of the main concerns (among others) was Moving and Handling the people they were Caring for yet still staying safe themselves. As a result, Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland have again teamed up with Cedar Mews Care Home in Hallam Fields, Birstall and will be holding regular Workshops to address the various concerns that Family Carers have and provide information, training and advice that will aim to make them feel more secure in their Caring role. The first of the Free Workshops will be held on Wednesday 16 May between 2 - 3.30pm at Cedar Mews Care Home and will cover Moving and Handling practices. Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club 2018 Season Preview

By Phil Vose, Vice Chairman
(% &'#" ) ' %#$&'#"
Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club are looking forward to starting the new cricket season in April in the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League. The first team will be participating in Division 5 West after narrowly losing out on promotion last season and the second team will be played in Division 7 West after finishing 2nd in Division 8 in 2017.
% % #%! *
Joe Harris has returned as captain for the first team taking over from prolific batsman, Anoop Jayaraj. The first XI finished in 4th last season and in the end were very unlucky to not gain promotion to Division 4. In 2018 they will be welcoming teams like Cropston 2, Hathern Old and Market Bosworth down at the Gynsills Lane ground. Anoop Jayaraj will be looking to emulate his outstanding 1,103 runs from last year and the bowlers hoping to top the averages. The first team started their 2018 season away to Gracedieu Park on Saturday 28th April with their first home match on 5th May against Ibstock Town 2. The second team captaincy has been taken over by Bradley Wells. The second XI will be looking to continue their form from last year’s excellent campaign when they gained promotion from Division 8 West. They have several new teams to play this season with matches against Broomleys 2, Mahers and Barrow Town 3 to look forward a home match against Braunstone to. The second XI commenced their matches with on 28th April.

During the winter, the players have been attending nets using the fantastic facilities at the City Cricket Academy which is at Freemans Common and some of the club helping to prepare members have been working down at the ground it for the new season. We have fantastic facilities down at the ground led by our hard-working groundsman, Jon Hartwell and we are extremely thankful to everyone involved for all their hard work. The 2018 season was delayed by a week due to the poor weather Spring period but was due to we have been experiencing over the late Winter/early start on 28th April.

Anstey and Glenfield CC have gained sponsors during the last few months. The new sponsors are GAP Property Services and Dale Studios and they join Langton Butchers in backing the club over the forthcoming year. The sponsors will be proudly displayed on the club’s new playing shirts.
The club are hosting the All Stars Cricket Programme which is aimed at providing youngsters aged from five to eight their first experience of cricket. The sessions start on 12th May from 10.30am and it will be great to see many children attending to continue the success of last year’s sessions. The club are looking to grow their junior section over the next few years and this is a great initiative to get involved in. If you would like to attend then please register via our website.
Both teams will be hoping to have a successful season. In addition, the club have also a local Sunday friendly entered the Twenty20 County Shield and the club have joined league which will include matches against teams like Earl Shilton, Electricity Sports and Dunton Bassett.
