Anstey Town Charity Grants
On 8th September 2014, less than 4weeks after Charnwood Planning Committee conditionally approved planning application P/13/2340/2, [up to 70 dwellings on Cropston Road] Leicestershire County Council Highways Authority withdrew their objections to the proposed development of up to 160 dwellings on Fairhaven Farm, application P/14/0428/2. The Highways Authority stated it has” no objections to the proposed development subject to the proposed access arrangements, improvements at The Nook junction and S106 contributions”. Earlier on 20th June Highways Agency stated, “the development is acceptable subject to works at the A46/A5630 Anstey Lane junction”. These withdrawals of objections would generally appear to be the result of an Addendum Modelling note issued by WYG Transport Planning dated June 2014, almost two months before Cropston Road development was conditionally approved. The SAVE ANSTEY Campaign is still of the opinion that serious traffic issues remain, that mitigation achieved as a result of planned changes to The Nook junction will leave traffic congestion remaining at severe levels. The removal of parking spaces will affect business and organisations also be detrimental safety around social and to road the centre of the village and on all roads feeding into The Nook. The Campaign feels so strongly about these issues that we instructed a respected Transport Consultancy to examine the transport issues relating to this development. Bancroft Consulting have issued an in depth evaluation and have highlighted a number of serious issues which argue that a suitable mitigation scheme has not yet been identified. The report can be viewed Charnwood Borough’s Planning Explorer under planning Application P/14/0428/2. It is likely that this planning application will come before Charnwood Borough Planning Committee at its November meeting. The Campaign continues to fight, as does our Parish Council, to save our village from speculative developments that will change our locality forever.

After our Speaker Mrs. Jackie Partner had demonstrated her secrets as to creating Birthday, Christmas and Greeting Cards of all varieties, some of which were incredibly difficult to achieve, the Membership was set to create their own cards. Silence prevailed as concentration took the place of the usual chatter. Bits and pieces of old cards were provided with which new images could be formed on new sheets of different coloured card.
Our next Meeting will be graced with the presence of Mr. Mike Leonard, with a very amusing talk on “An irreverent approach to Political Correctness!” This will take place on Monday, November 10th, in the Cropston Evangelical Chapel, Station Road, Cropston. at 2.00 for 2.15pm. For further information, please contact me on 0116 2363467: I shall be very pleased to hear from you.
Nearing the end of the period of concentrated creation, Jackie went round and inspected the efforts and was very delighted to find the remarkable talent displayed. Anstey WI
Film Presentations From Thurcaston & Cropston Parish Council
The year 2015 marks 100 years since the WI was first started in the United Kingdom resulting in the institute commemorating the event with a baton which is travelling around each WI region. During the week from October 6th 2014 the baton was passed on to the Leicestershire and Rutland region and to commemorate this event members of the WI were encouraged to meet at Foxton Locks with bunting to decorate the walkway, on Wednesday 8th October to see the baton. Anstey WI duly attended this event. Although the weather had been awful, on arrival at Foxton Locks the rain stopped and the sun even came out. There were approximately 114 WI institutes from around the county and Rutland which added up to approximately 1,000 WI members standing along the side of the locks. Whereas everyone else arrived by car, Anstey WI arrived in style by narrow boat from Debdale moorings. What a treat and what a lovely way to arrive at a function.
"Mandela - Long Walk to Freedom" was October's powerful and thought-provoking film. Idris Elba depicted perfectly Mandela's ideologies as he changed, during his lengthy imprisonment, from an aggressive anti-apartheid campaigner to a peaceful, determined negotiator in a South Africa where black and white would live together in freedom. “The Monuments Men" will be shown on Friday November 14th and lasts 118 minutes. Based on a true story, a World War ll platoon begins the task of recovering stolen masterpieces from the hands of Nazi Germany. Claire, played by Cate Blanchett, is risking her life by noting down every piece of art work that is being taken. This allows the Monuments Men, one of whom is played by Hugh Bonneville of "Downton" to go in after D-Day to try to locate art as it is being spirited away. This film blends excitement with comedy. "About TIme" will be shown on Friday December 12th and lasts 124 minutes. Directed by RIchard Curtis, this wonderful British comedy drama stars Bill Nighy and Domhnall Gleeson who features in "Anna Karenina". Tim discovers that he has a new gift which enables him to travel in time. With this special ability, Tim tries to change his past in order to improve his future. Do these unusual plans succeed? He has an eccentric family and friends who all help to give this film both warmth and humour.
Q: Why are ghosts so bad at lying? A: Because you can see right through them! Q: When is it bad luck to be followed by a black cat? A: When you’re a mouse.
“Nabraska" will be shown on Friday January 9th 2015
Thank goodness for Halloween, all of a sudden, cobwebs in my house are decorations!
Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall, starting at 7.30pm. There will be refreshments and a lucky prize draw. Advanced tickets can be purchased via the parish office - 0116 236 7626 or at the door.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Michael Parr feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace
the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer
requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Anstey, Cropston, Thurcaston, Swithland, Newtown Linford & Woodhouse areas and Michael is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not
just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Michael a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk On September 29th I became a granddad to Daniel James Douglas Sutherington. First child to my eldest Son Mark (7th Paras RHA) and his wife Shirona, who were married at St. Marys church, Anstey in August 2010. He weighed in at 8lb. 8ozs. He was born 11 days late. (It must be a family trait!) They all live in Colchester. Mark (39) went to Anstey Latimer and Martin schools and was nick named “Sid”! Daniel follows Poppy Mae, Tamsin and Alfie.
Charles Drive, Anstey. I know it’s closed at the moment and parking can’t be easy but some drivers are not playing the game? Parking your car in front of other peoples driveway really isn’t done now is it? Have a bit of respect for people’s right of way. You will find somewhere to park nearby and the extra bit of exercise will do you good… I have had a word with the local garage nearby to see if workers cars could be parked within their site but unfortunately that’s not possible at the moment. Please be considerate to others.
Mitchells Field. No there is nothing being built here have no fear its merely a compound for STWA equipment for work being done on Charles Drive, Anstey. All being well It may be used afterwards as a car park for supporters on Mitchells field, which as plans for 2 junior football pitches. It could also be used as overflow for Anstey Nomads so making Cropston Road a bit freer on match days. If STWA leave the hard-core down and it is suitable, it could save the council a considerable amount of money.
Loughborough EYE! BIG news for Christmas? Its been confirmed by town officials that the Loughborough EYE
will be the first exhibit to be planned in the new pedestrianized A6 Market place on Sunday 30th November. It will be officially opened along with the Loughborough Christmas Lights by the Mayor of Charnwood. Cllr. Paul Day from Anstey. The Loughborough EYE will remain a feature until Christmas Eve. The wheel which stands 70ft. high will be covered in as many Santa’s as possible during the Loughborough’s annual “Santa Fun” Run” on Sunday 7th December 2014.
Core strategy. Slowly but hopefully surely the Charnwood Borough Council core strategy which will have a bearing on what will be built within Charnwood over the next few years is going public again soon. Hearings start on Tuesday December 9th in the Victoria Room, Town Hall, Loughborough, from 9.30am. These will run until the 19th and then after the Christmas break, from January 6th until 16th 2015. Members of the public can attend the examination. In March 2014 the planning inspector Kevin Ward suspended the examination of CCS to enable the council to provide more up to date figures for housing needs across Leicestershire. It’s important to get the strategy right not just for now but for the good of Charnwood in the future. Please do your best to attend.
Stephen Dorrell MP. I spent an interesting couple of hours with our local MP the Rt. Honourable Stephen Dorrell, new chairman of the House of Commons health select committee, at my home recently along with Anstey parish Councillor vice chair Cllr. Debbie Taylor. We covered a number of subjects from local issues, the martin high school and food at the Leicester royal infirmary. I also gave him 3 letters from Anstey residents for him to reply too.
Planning Anstey. It is my understanding that the next planning meeting at Charnwood which will feature matters concerning Anstey will be on Thursday 6th November at 5pm. Anstey Parish Council of which I am a member have lodged their objections. I agree wholeheartedly with their thoughts. At a full parish council meeting it was a unanimous decision in favour of the objections.
100,000 new affordable houses? I wonder where our senior MP’s are going to put all these new dwellings unless the thinking is of putting in planning applications for extensions to the British Isles first!! As I see it to build this many “affordable housing” will mean a lot more than 100,000 because councils don’t have the resources to build houses these days; they rely on developers contributions to build so called “affordable housing” within new private estates. So looking at 100k you could be seeing at least 300k or more…
Oh! Oh! Oh! Christmas is coming please support your local shops. Any contributions to the Rothley food parcels campaign which I wrote about in the last “Local” issue can be left at Leicestershire lettings office on Stadon Road, Anstey. Pete or Liz. Your dog can give blood Like human donors, dogs can save lives by donating blood. The whole process involving the collection of blood is very easy and the team are very good at putting the owner and donor at ease. To start off there is a 10 to 15 minute health check followed by a similar period donating 450 ml of lifesaving blood. Just like humans there is a 5 to 10 minute rest period with refreshments and a doggy bag. Pet Blood bank is the only charity that provides a canine blood bank service for all veterinary practitioners across the UK. To be a a donor, your dog needs to be fit and healthy, between one and 8 years old. Weigh more than 25kg, have a good temperament, never travelled abroad, vaccinated and not on any medication. Autumn Art Fair In Woodhouse
What’s to Become of Anstey Library – Tell Us, Win a Prize “Dad, what’s that you’re looking at?” Melissa said, as she wandered into the front room.
The artists’ group ArtSpace Loughborough will be holding their annual art fair at Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall (Main Street, Woodhouse Eaves) on Saturday and Sunday 8th and 9th November. This will be their 7th autumn art fair and this year is promising to be bigger and better with a total of 16 artists taking part.
“You don’t know that building? That’s the Anstey Library, that is.” “A library? Is that like Google or something?” “Sort of. Sort of. An offline search engine, if you will. Full of books, maps and information for everyone – not just those with computers.” “We’ve got books as well. Look, on my smart phone I’ve got all of Jane Austen’s books.” “Tell me, when was the last time you spoke to anyone about Jane Austen?” “Well…sometime…uhm…last week, I was posting about it on Instagram!” “But no-one talked back to you, no-one said ‘That was a great part’, did they? That’s what libraries gave us. A book with history, not just words that got wiped away when the Wi-Fi goes.” Melissa sighed. “That must be a very old picture of the library. Is it not around anymore?” Her dad smiled. “It’s still here. We’re working really hard to keep it safe for the people of Anstey.” “Then how does it look so old?” “Because I went down to the library, grabbed an image of Google Maps and made it look old. Want to come and see how?” Her Dad was still puzzling though. They’d wanted a name for people to help keep the library for the people of Anstey – so even if they did have Amazon and iTunes, they could still keep physical books for the next generation. Anstey Library Interest Group sounded good but dull, but you could always go with “Friends of Anstey Library” as FOALs, or Anstey Library Friends (ALF). But then he thought, why not ask the people of Anstey what they think? There’s a box of Thornton’s Chocolate’s available for the best name – so get your thinking caps on. Send your best ideas in to AnsteyLib@virginmedia.com ask Melissa if you need help with the email – she’s got her smart phone.

The Martin High School...
Tuesday and Thursday, 7th and 9th October The shaking mountain, Mam Tor, the Blue John Caverns and Peveril Castle were the main points of visit for the Year 8 geographers who enjoyed their field study despite the rain.
The Martin School is poised at a fantastic point in its history. Our first Year 11 will take their GCSE exams next summer in May/June 2015.
really shaped up. The mood in the school is one of quiet confidence. Our families and our students have really wanted this change from 11-14 to 11-16. Our students are determined to capitalise on this opportunity.
Our Science results, the first GCSE’s we have undertaken last summer, were most promising with 67% achieving A-C and 92% A-D. The current Year 11 are working hard to top this. They are determined to achieve their potential. We are quietly anticipating that they will do exceedingly well. Fingers crossed.
Open Day
Lots of families have visited us during October. Everyone reports on the friendly welcome they receive from our students. The Year 8 guides have taken great delight in showing their school off to the visitors. Adults report on how mature and confident the 12 year old guides are, and what great pride they take in their school.

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club Annual Show 2014 The Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club held its 31st Annual Show at the Richard Hill Primary School for a second successful year. New records were set for exhibitors in both the adult and junior classes with exhibits up to their usual high standards. The flower section, in particular, saw a record number of entries. The Sedgwick Cup, presented to the exhibitor gaining the highest overall points in the Show, went to Paul Stubbs. Paul also won the Silver Jubilee Vase for the plant and vegetable class. Phil Dews retained the Challenge Trophy for the highest number of points by a Garden Club member. He also retained the trophy for the most points in the vegetable and fruit sections. Other double trophies were won by Alison Briggs, June Sharpe and Marjorie Kirk. Marjorie won the Orton Cup for the Best Exhibit in Show with a wonderful floral art entry in the ‘Simplicity’ class. Garden Club member Lesley Day was the winner of the Delia Brock Trophy for the exhibitor who has never won a Club trophy before. A new name also appeared on the Junior Cup (most points by a junior in the adult classes). Well done to James Bennett. Councillor David Snartt who has supported the Show for many years, was again on hand to present the trophies. Many thanks to David for finding time in his busy schedule. Finally, thanks to all exhibitors and visitors for supporting the Show again this year and making it such an enjoyable day. Thanks also to the team of volunteers who put so much work in before, during and after the Show. Autumn meetings of the Gardening Club in the Memorial Hall

Swifts Under 9 Girls play their first ever match!
The Swifts are really proud of the Under 9 Girls team who recently played their first match against Coalville Ravenettes. Both teams are newly formed and started the match nervously, however they soon settled and their parents were treated to a fantastic game of football. After playing a development format of three 15 minute periods of football the match finished with a home win for the Swifts. All of the Swifts girls who are aged 7 and 8 played with great spirit and enthusiasm to rival any other Swifts’ team. They now are looking forward to playing again in the future against other local clubs which we too are eagerly awaiting. Girl’s football development is actively supported by Leicestershire County FA and the Swifts are proud to provide the opportunity for girls to play from the age of 5 up until 12. The club has one of the strongest development paths in the area and for this reason it continues to attract new players. Of course this would not be possible without the dedicated support of the parents, spectators and sponsors of the teams who we would like to extend our thanks to.
If your daughter is interested in playing football please feel free to come along to one of our training sessions which are on Saturday mornings at 10am on the Stadon Road Recreation ground. We welcome players of all abilities and aim to progress all to play matches. Alternatively contact Valerie Hayes, Club Secretary 0116 2365322

WATCH FOOTBALL
by Reece Preston-Hayes
Since the last issue the Nomads have seen a turn of fortune especially in the first team who have earned some vindicating points against a strong Holbrook side who are at the top end of the table, and a win against mid table Ellistown & Ibstock. Nomads’ won 3-2 against Holbrook, and 3-1 against Ellistown & Ibstock. Our Under 16’s have had a good share of the lime light this month after playing the youth side of Notts County twice, and managed to beat them at home. The Under16’s have been doing well in the league winning all but 2 of their 7 games so far.

The Reserves managed to earn the first cup win of the year winning 2-0 against Sileby Victoria in the Saturday Intermediate. Unfortunately for the Reserves they still haven’t been able to face our rivals Anstey Town due to postponements but hopefully we’ll get to see that match soon! The Under 18’s floodlit team haven’t had too many games this month but had a notable win against Gresley when a counter attack late in the game was put past the Gresley keeper from a good distance out, arguably stealing the points from a heartbroken Gresley.

POLICEMATTERS Welcome to ‘Police Matters’ from the Anstey Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team. The crime breakdown shows offences committed between 15 September and 19 October 2014 inclusive. We start with an appeal for information about a burglary in Albion Street, Anstey. The incident happened between 7.00 pm on Wednesday September 24th and 8.20 am on Thursday September 25th at the general stores shop on Albion Street. Access was gained to the shop and a large amount of cigarettes, spirits and cash were stolen. Detective Constable 1340 Paul Burchell is investigating. He said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who may have information about these items or is offered them for sale in suspicious circumstances. We are also keen to speak to any witnesses who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area in between these times. If any of our readers can help please phone the police on 101, followed by option 2, and then key in Detective Burchell’s collar number - 1340. As the dark nights draw in we would like to re-enforce the sensible advice offered by the Anstey Neighbourhood Watch beat manager in the last publication. Think about how your property looks to a potential burglar in the dark. 24hr timers on lights and radio’s, and adequate external security lighting are essential to give the impression that someone is at home. We often see properties in total darkness during our foot patrols, with no vehicles on drives and no obvious signs of anybody at home. Remember if we think no one is home…….so could the burglars! The beat team will continue to conduct night patrols, and any houses we see in complete darkness may receive one of our ‘No Lights On’ leaflets through the letter box as a polite reminder. FIREWORKS CODE It is the season for bonfire night and fireworks parties, so we would like to offer some basic advice to ensure you and your family enjoy the fireworks safely: • Keep fireworks in a closed box
• Follow the instructions on each firework
• Light all fireworks at arms length
• Stand well back
• Never go back to a lit firework
• Never put fireworks in your pocket
• Never throw fireworks
• Keep Pets indoors

Unfortunately, there is always somebody who wants to spoil the fun by taking fireworks onto the street and causing alarm, harassment or distress to members of the public. We will be on foot patrol throughout the period, and any persons stopped with fireworks will be dealt with via fixed penalty notices. Details will also be passed to our partners in the Youth Offending teams so we can work together to deal appropriately with any youths involved. Have an enjoyable but safe Bonfire season – and where possible always attend an organised event. As always, we would ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious person(s) or activity to Police on 101 or, if you feel a crime is taking place, 999. If you have any information at all about crime please call CRIMESTOPPERS. Your call will always be free, we won’t ask your name and you may even receive a cash reward. David Snartt Reports... County Councillor for Bradgate Division. - Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate. During the month we have had more successful events, including two scarecrow weekends in Newtown Linford and Woodhouse Eaves. I must congratulate all the residents involved in organising such excellent events, I am always amazed with the different ideas for scarecrows that come forward every year. Once again I enjoyed being involved in the open day at the Newtown Linford Primary School as part of the scarecrow weekend. Doing my usual job cooking BBQ burgers and sausages, the children had also made some fantastic scarecrows. Development within my Division. It seems that every month I need to update residents on where we are with planning applications. In my last report I stated that the application for up to 160 dwellings on Cropston Road, Anstey was likely to be determined at a planning committee during October. I understand that this was delayed to give residents and interested parties another opportunity to send their observations and objections to Charnwood Borough Council after the revised observations from the Highway Authority were made known. I am still of the opinion these latest proposals for The Nook will have a detrimental effect on retail businesses and residents who already encounter delays and parking issues, without more piecemeal development within the village. I have registered my concerns to Charnwood Borough Council about the revised proposals. These include the reduction in car parking spaces, the disruption when carrying out the alterations to the central island, altering the appearance of The Nook which is adjacent to the conservation area of Anstey and exacerbating the current problems with the bus stop on Leicester Road. This especially as a new bus service will be in operation during November, which will see an extra two buses per hour using the Leicester Road bus stop. I am grateful for all the time the Save Anstey Group have put in to try and overcome these latest proposals. I have also been keeping in touch with the Residents Group at Thurcaston about the proposal to build on land within the village, this I believe will be coming forward to a planning committee, possibly in November.
Libraries Update. You may recall that I gave information on a consultation about the future of the Library Service. Part of the proposals were the development of community partnership libraries, whereby the County Council would provide a support package to enable local communities to run their local libraries in partnership with the County Council. The decision by the County Council Cabinet about the future of community libraries, of which Anstey is one, has been postponed whilst a Scrutiny Panel has reviewed the proposals for support which will be provided by the County Council for community libraries. They will also make recommendations on the type, level and duration of support that can be offered. I attended the latest meeting about the future of Anstey Library, where interested residents put forward their views and set up an executive committee to take this item forward. I am grateful to Phil Knight for all the hard work he has put into looking at the best proposals for keeping Anstey Library open for the benefit of local residents. Any one interested in helping move this forward or would like more information, Phil has set up an e-mail address for contact AnsteyLib@virginmedia.com The Budget Challenge. During 2013 Leicestershire County Council announced that it was facing its biggest financial challenge ever. This was again outlined in the latest Leicestershire Matters magazine which stated "rising demand for care services and a reduction in grants have pushed the savings target up to £120 million by 2018 and £50 million of this has not yet been identified". This situation is not helped by Leicestershire having the third lowest Government funding, this means that Leicestershire County Council receives £56 less per person than the average county council. The County Council will continue to raise this unfairness with our Members of Parliament. Just for interest, if we received Government grant money at the same level as the average county council we would receive an extra £37 million per year. Preventative Services. I received many letters from concerned

During the consultation, concerns were raised by people using services provided by Vista about the loss of specialist services, stating that their independence would significantly reduce if proposal in the consultation were agreed. In light of the issues raised it was recommended that £160,000 is allocated to fund a specialist visual impairment and dual sensory impairment service rather than the £17,000 originally planned. This was agreed by the County Council Cabinet on the 19th September 2014. May I take this opportunity to thank all the residents who contacted me expressing their views about the consultation proposals. Park and Ride Concessionary Charge Consultation. The Leicestershire County Council is now consulting on a proposal to introduce a charge for all concessionary pass holders using the park and ride services after 9.30am on weekdays and all day at weekends and Bank holidays. This will include the Birstall Park and Ride Site. The proposed charge is £1 for a concessionary day ticket, therefore the County Council are seeking your views on the introduction of this charge. The consultation will end on Monday 17th November. The survey is available online at www.leics.gov.uk/ haveyoursay/ parkandridefares. Paper copies are available on request by calling 0116 3050002. Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club 2014 Season Review Anstey and Glenfield Cricket Club enjoyed an excellent 2014 season with the highlight being the 1st team’s promotion to Division 6 of the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League. Unfortunately, the 2nd team did not fare so well suffering relegation from Division 8. The 1st team had a fabulous year finishing 2nd in Division 7 West of the new Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League. They ended the season by winning 15 out of their 20 matches, collecting 449 points, and finishing 2nd to Asian Sports. The first XI won promotion in their final game at Loughborough Greenfields 2, winning by 9 wickets. The team were led fantastically by young captain, Joe Harris in his first season as skipper. The key to the 1st team’s brilliant season was the magnificent bowling attack with 10 opposing teams being bowled out for less than 100. The bowlers were led by Anil Revu and Chamika Mewan with both men taking 43 wickets throughout the season. They were also backed up by Kumara Sanira and Joe Harris. Anil and Chamika both took 5 wickets at least once in an innings and the best individual contribution must surely go to Anil as he took 4 wickets in one over against Broughton Astley. The batsmen also made some key contributions, with Anoop Jayaraj and Sahan Tharanga each scoring centuries. In fact, Anoop had a stunning season scoring 837 runs in total at an average of 49.23. Sahan also scored 572 valuable runs. Half centuries were also scored by Charlie Wilkes, Anil Revu, John Wright and Luisha Perera to greatly boost the team’s batting totals. So, the 1st team will look forward to 2015 playing
in Division 6, where they will no doubt find it a bit tougher next season but will do their upmost to hopefully be celebrating again at the end of 2015. The 2nd team endured a disappointing season finishing 2nd from bottom in Division 8 West. They ended the season with 170 points and finished 20 points adrift of Hathern Old 2 after losing their final match of the season to Hathern by 67 runs. Unfortunately, the second XI only won 3 matches out of 18 in 2014. The main reason for the poor season was due to some below average batting displays, although, captain, Charlie Wilkes and Jim Pike both contributed with a half century. Anil Revu in a rare appearance for the 2nd team scored a wonderful century too. The 2nd team will hope for an improved 2015 playing in Division 9. The friendly Sunday team made a reappearance towards the end of the season playing 4 matches in the end and they will hopefully be playing with greater regularity in 2015. The club also took part in the Cliffe Wright Cup losing narrowly in the final to Cropston. Anstey and Glenfield were well led by their committee, with the groundsmen also preparing a fantastic ground with which to play on. The club are hosting their AGM and presentation evening on Sunday 16th November from 6pm at the Gynsill Lane Sports Ground Pavilion and Winter Nets will commence on Sunday 1st February at 10am taking place at Beaumont Leys School. Anstey and Glenfield are actively looking for any new players to join the club for the 2015 season, so if you are interested in being involved then please email our secretary Amanda Wilkes at amandaandcharlie@ btinternet.com. Please also visit our website at http://ansteyandglenfield.play-cricket.com for regular updates, results and news.

Thurcaston & Cropston Neighbourhood Plan Thurcaston & Cropston Neighbourhood Plan Working Party planned two Public drop-in events as part of the process to produce a Neighbourhood Plan for the Parish. The events organised by the RCC (Rural Community Council) were to encourage Parishioners to help plan the future development of the Parish. They were invited to let us know what they like about Thurcaston & Cropston, what they dislike about Thurcaston & Cropston and would they would like to see improved. The first of two consultation events was held in the Cropston Evangelical Free Church on Friday 19th September between 3 and 7pm. The turnout was good and attracted 61 individuals. The second event, held the following Friday at the Thurcaston Memorial hall attracted 72 adults and some younger members of the community. The same display (which covered employment and business, environment, flooding, greenbspaces, history & heritage, housing need and traffic and transport) was used at both venues. As a result of these two events, 35 individuals asked to be kept 'updated' on the progress of the Neighbourhood Development Plan and 18 have said that they would like to be part of the themed groups who will report back to the Working Party. These individuals were all entered into a prize draw, Elaine Pole of Cropston won a meal for two at the Bradgate Arms, Cropston and Penny Waterfield of Thurcaston won a meal for two at the Wheatsheaf, Thurcaston. The themed groups will be 'Heritage and Conservation', 'Open spaces & environment', 'housing', 'Recreation, facilities & services', 'Traffic & Transport' and 'Business & Economy'. Anyone wating to find out more about the Neighbourhood Development Plan or wants to be a part of the themed groups should contact the Parish Clerk, Marianne Lane on 0116 2367626

autumn
gardening Welcome to Autumn! In some respects I love the autumn, the chilly mornings and the warm days, the colours of the leaves, but on the other hand it heralds the arrival of winter and damp, dismal November. Now if the time to invest in some fleece to cover up tender half hardy plants and to lift summer flowering bulbs and tubers such as dahlias, gladioli and begonias. In their place plant spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils and tulips etc. Lift summer bedding and replace with winter flowering plants such as wallflowers, primulas, and pansies. Also replant tubs with winter flowering plants and consider underplanting with dwarf daffs and tulips. Prune climbing roses and tie into a frame
22
to prevent the wind from damaging them. Cut back perennials that have finished flowering and clear the borders of weeds and debris. Consider using a mulch to keep the ground weed free and to provide some insulation for the plants during the winter. Finish harvesting peas and beans. Harvest pumpkins before the first frost. Plant overwintering onions and garlic. Cut back the fruited canes of summer raspberries and tie in next years’ fruiting canes. Clear the straw from around the base of strawberries and give them a good haircut to encour-
age new growth. Use glue bands around the trunks of fruit trees to trap winter moth, earwigs and ants. Apply a winter wash to trunks and branches of fruit trees to kill overwintering pests. If you still have plants in the greenhouse remove the shading to make of the most of the light. Once the greenhouse is clear, disinfect and clean it before moving in any tender species. Remember to check these plants for pest and disease. Set the heater in case of frost. Clear the lawns of any debris and tidy up the edges. Mow if needed and if conditions allow. Aerate and top dress ready for the winter. New turf can also be planted now. Hedges can have their final cut of the year too. Net ponds to prevent leaves from falling into the water and consider encouraging birds into the garden to eat and pests that are about. Then retire to the sofa with a cup of coffee ready for Strictly and Downton!

Anstey RFC’s Anstey RFC’s continues with a big win and a couple of narrow losses. The final game of September was a home match in the league when we welcomed Melton Nomads to Link Road. Despite a difficult start for the home side, this was a day when everything went to plan and by half time a hefty 40-0 lead was in the bag. The second half carried on in the same vein as time and again Anstey outpaced their visitors and scored at regular intervals. Too many try scorers to name which shows that this was a good overall team performance with the tries being shared between forwards and backs. Nomads battled on bravely to the end but were simply outgunned. Final score 81-0 The 5th October fixture saw Vipers come to visit complete with a large squad, coaches and a manager. The strong running from a superior side saw Anstey trailing by 24 points to nil at half time. Starting the second half the tide seemed to have turned, with Anstey being awarded a few penalties, resulting in an early try from Captain Matt Belcher. Unfortunately following that the became somewhat nasty with punches being thrown in rucks and mauls culminating in a mass brawl following a returned punch to one of our backs. Final score was Vipers 32, Anstey 15 11th October and it was the turn of Oadby Wyggs to visit and time to reverse the previous week’s problems. Some non availabilities through meant we field a mixed and weakened side. The opening exchanges were fairly even with Wyggs playing downhill keeping the pressure on Anstey who defended well, giving a half time score of 5-12. The second half saw Oadby score a couple of quick tries, replied to by an Anstey effort completed by veteran Matt Gilbert. Final score was 17-27 which could have been a lot different if Anstey could have cut the error count. Ashby are the next visitors due for a league game at Link Road, with a busy programme following in November. New players always welcome, just contact Matt Belcher on Ian Pollock. The Clubhouse is upstairs at the Coach & Horses and the ground is the playing field behind Anstey Martin School on Link Road. Chris Apperley, Anstey RFC
FILMREVIEW Fury
April 1945, and as World War II finally draws to a close, a determined U.S Army Sergeant named Wardaddy leads his five-man crew on a brave mission aimed squarely at central Nazi Germany. With their Sherman tank named ‘Fury’ in tow, they soon find themselves outnumbered and left in a vulnerable position. With the odds stacked firmly against them, the crew must draw upon everything they’ve ever learned, and fight their most heroic battle to date, in order to return home alive and victorious. Will Wardaddy’s promise to keep his entire crew alive be one he can keep?
The Book of Life Manolo is a young man who seems to have more problems than most. As well as being involved in a complicated love triangle, with himself and the dashing Joaquin both competing for the affections of the beautiful Maria, he must also try to please his demanding family. Meanwhile, two spirits named La Muerte and Xibalba wage a bet as to which of the two young men will sweep Maria off her feet and take her hand in marriage. When it becomes clear to Xibalba that Maria is falling in love with Manolo, he sends a snake to kill him, on the assumption she will then choose Joaquin instead. Once bitten, Manolo finds himself in limbo, stuck between three magical worlds, where he must use every ounce of strength and bravery in order to return and truly win over Maria. The Book of Life is a beautifully animated children’s picture that combines romance, comedy and adventure.

NOVEMBERS NEWS FROM ANSTEY NHW DARK NIGHTS It’s that time of year again when it’s dark when you leave the house in the morning, and it’s dark when you get home again. Don’t make it easy for the burglar to know when your house is empty. • Lights give the impression someone is home. • Use light timers to automatically switch on lights, especially during the winter evenings. • Encourage friends, neighbours & family to do the same. • Light timers are available at your local DIY shop. • Use low energy bulbs to reduce costs and carbon footprint. You can also use 24 hr timers use these to plug into a radio or light. (£3 from me). Outside of your property think about installing a security light, especially in the back of your property, to protect your shed/garage from intruders.
ANSTEY WIVES Thank you to everyone who made me so welcome when I recently attended one of your meetings, to give a talk on Crime Prevention. I hope you all found it very informative and useful.
WELCOME PACKS I am very sorry but I still haven’t got round to everyone who signed up to NHW at the recent gala. I still have to get round to the people living in Bradgate Road, Church Lane, Gorse Hill, Stadon Road and
Woodgon Road. I will be bringing you your welcome packs very soon, I haven’t forgotten you.
NEW SCHEMES I am still working in the James Street area, setting up new NHW schemes. I have now got NHW Coordinators for both Charnwood Road, (Patrick Goodwin) and The Close. (Emma Winder). I am still working on James Street and hoping to finalise this very soon. Thank you to everyone who has signed up to these new schemes. Belonging to a NHW scheme helps to bring communities together, and makes them a better and happier place to live in. Being a good neighbour is looking out for each other, noticing if you see anything suspicious in your neighbourhood especially if you know your neighbours are out at work or on holiday, and reporting it to the police or your Coordinator. If anyone who said NO to joining NHW and has changed their minds, please talk to your coordinator who will be pleased to welcome you has a member. It only costs you a £1 to join, and this is to help pay for the NHW Street signs. These signs act has a deterrent for burglars, also just by displaying your sticker in a window. The more members we have the more we can help keep Anstey a safe place to live. If you need to contact me for any reason my details are: Phone no 0116 2365745 – email diane@ansteynhw.co.uk
