Cllr. John Sutherington Sadly last month was Cllr. John Sutherington’s final Councillor’s Report. He took great pleasure in writing this each month. In typical Sutty style, this was often at the last minute but always with lots of thought and a dose or two of wry humour. On many occasions he would send his final draft to daughter Gemma for editing and occasionally be advised to, let’s say, ‘simmer down’, some of his more outrageous views (though usually they still made the final edit, as you will know!). We know that many Anstey residents turned to the report straight away and have expressed how much they will miss reading John’s views and news. John was a much loved dad, partner, brother, grandad, uncle and friend. A great asset to the local community and a keen sportsman, singer and entertainer. John had suffered with a progressive illness since 2013 and passed away in the early hours of the morning at Leicester Royal Infirmary on Saturday 6th October, aged 69. Despite John’s determination to keep going, sadly his illness overcame him this time. We have been overwhelmed by the response from the community since John passed away and would like to thank everyone who has expressed their condolences, memories and kind wishes. As Dad would say, “Always a pleasure, never a chore.

ANSTEY WI

Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society

Anstey WI had a craft evening, when each member was given a calico bag to decorate as she wished. Jill Taras provided the equipment and demonstrated a variety of techniques. Most chose to print, using leaves or wooden blocks. It was rather messy and great fun, a real change from the usual more formal format of listening to a speaker, and the results were very effective.

Stained glass and the art of Theodora Salusbury. 1875-1956. Georgina Maltby visited the Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society in October to tell us about her cousin the stained glass artist Theodora Salusbury and the art of stained glass making. First of all Georgina Maltby explained what needs to be taken into consideration when creating a stained glass window, and the steps involved in the process: the space and shape of the window are important; how the light will come through it; and whether there are any shadows from outside that will affect it. Then a cartoon is drawn, the glass is cut and coloured, then leaded up and finally installed. Theodora Salusbury (who liked to be known as Miss Salusbury) was born in Leicestershire in 1875, and was one of five sisters, none of whom married. Her father was a solicitor in Leicester and they lived close to the church of St James the Greater on London Road, before moving to Birstall. The family was very fond of birds and she often depicted them in her windows, and sometimes used a peacock as a signature which she chose as it is a symbol of resurrection. Unfortunately all her papers were destroyed after her death in 1956 so it has been a ‘wonderful treasure hunt’ for Georgina Maltby to find her windows. One of the first she created was The Annunciation (1920) which is in St James the Great Church, Birstall. Leicester was an advantageous place to live and Miss Salusbury and two of her sisters studied at the Leicester School of Art. There were a number of well-established families who would commission work and there are more than a dozen of her windows in Leicestershire, including three in Birstall and one in Woodhouse Eaves. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, and later trained with Christopher Whall (a leading stained glass artist in the Arts and Crafts Movement), before setting up her own studio in St Agnes in Cornwall. Her career really began after the First World War when she was 45. Her work is characterized by her use of vivid colours and finely drawn figures, particularly babies and children. At some time (probably during World War II) she moved to Bath to live with her sisters, and it is here that Georgina Maltby remembers meeting Cousin Dora. She died in 1956. If you would like more information about Miss Salusbury and to see photographs of her windows, Georgina has just finished a finely illustrated book. ‘Theodora Salusbury 1875-1956: Stained glass artist’. By Georgina Maltby and Andrew Loutit. The next meeting will take place in the Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church, Thurcaston, on Tuesday 20th November, at 7.30pm. It will include a short AGM and three members’ mini talks: The Friendship between the Herricks and the historian Nichols; The planned Bradgate Railway through Cropston; and a light-hearted look at the Peninsular War. Seasonal refreshments will be available.

Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club Plant Hunter Ernest ‘Chinese’ Wilson by Dr Twigs Way

the ‘handkerchief’ tree, which had been spotted and described by another plant hunter. So ‘Chinese’ Wilson, as he was then known, set off and found the tree, together with many more plants.

Ernest Wilson lived over a hundred years ago (1876 – 1930) when our interest in gardening and plants was very different from today. He trained in horticulture, but was more interested in botany. He was keen to do well and to progress in his career, studied hard, and took many exams. Indeed he was so successful that by the age of 21 he had a job at Kew (the most prestigious botanical garden in the Country).

His extraordinary life was described brilliantly by our speaker. It was a most informative talk, using many of ‘Chinese’ Wilson’s own words. It was also humorous and presented with great enthusiasm. The talk was supplemented by many photos, including copies of Wilson’s original prints taken on his trips to China.

The ‘hand Th dke kerchief ’ ttre ree tth hat ‘Chinese’ W Wiilson brought back to England

China had a problem with people stealing plants, especially commercial plants like tea and tried to restrict access. Traveling in China was dangerous (Wilson always carried a gun). He also encountered disease and injury. When travelling over poor terrain in a mountainous area he broken his leg in a landslide. In addition, China is a very big place and Wilson needed local guides to navigate and find his way around.

Wilson began his career at a time when plants were being bought to the UK from all over the world. Because of his botanical skills he was asked to travel to China to look for plants, the ‘mecca’ for plant hunters. Travelling to China in those days was difficult, going by boat and by travelling across America, and taking many months (if there were no problems). On this first expedition, Wilson sent back many plants and was very successful. This success was followed by famous nurseries approaching him to return to China. In 1899 he was commissioned to find and bring back

Borough Council, Southfields Road, Loughborough. LE11 2TX by December 12th 2018.

David Snartt Reports... Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate

John Sutherington It was with great sadness that I learnt of the passing of John. Although we were of different political persuasion, I believe we had one thing in common. Through our roles as Councillors we always tried to make a difference and help local residents within our communities. This was very evident when I also looked after the Parish of Anstey as their County Councillor. John was well respected by fellow Councillors at Charnwood Borough Council. Recently, although not in the best of health, he still came and took part in Council meetings, making sure he was representing the residents of Anstey and the wider Charnwood Borough. Personally I will miss our conversations mostly about local sport and his love of singing, but most of all I will miss his mannerisms, which I am sure all that knew him had come to love.

Roecliffe Road This is a further update on the latest measures that are taking place to try to reduce speeding traffic along Roecliffe Road. We are still seeing accidents occurring not only at the crossroads but along the road where speed restrictions are in place. I now understand, after correspondence with the Police Road Safety Unit, the speed camera van has visited Roecliffe Road during September and a number of offences were recorded. Further visits will take place during the coming months. I hope this deployment of the speed camera van and a further initiative proposed by the Parish Council will start to reduce vehicle speeds along this road.

Planning Update I have now received the decision about the planning application to erect 2 detached dwellings to land at the rear of 80 Main Street, Woodhouse Eaves. The decision was to refuse permission for the following reason. ‘The

development of this site with two large houses and the consequent loss of the trees, would have a significant adverse impact upon the character and appearance of the Woodhouse Eaves Conservation Area and the setting of the neighbouring listed building’.

Model of Local Government in Leicestershire There have been no major changes since my last information. I understand the County Council are progressing this item, setting out drivers and options for reshaping local government in Leicestershire. This was outlined in a report published on the 5th October 2018. Whilst the seven District Council Leaders, including Charnwood, unanimously agreed to continue working together to review the current model of local government in Leicestershire. In a joint statement they stated ‘the District Councils are continuing to work together to look at future service delivery in Leicestershire to ensure it is lean, effective and in touch with residents. Any potential changes need to be based on a thorough assessment of all options and backed by evidence and communities’. The Leaders will ensure residents, partners and stakeholders are involved in the conversation and fully consulted. The needs of our residents will be put first.

Village Scarecrow Festivals Both Newtown Linford and Woodhouse Eaves held their Scarecrow Festivals over successive weekends. In both cases they attracted many people, walking through the villages admiring the excellent scarecrows. I am always amazed with the way these events have developed over the years, especially as they benefit local organisations, charities and other local good causes. Both weekends were blessed with good fine weather, which I am sure added to the enjoyment. I was involved with the judging at Newtown Linford along with Carol Ann and Martin, taking over 3 hours to look at 41 scarecrows. We individually marked each one, therefore we had no idea of the winners until they were announced on the Sunday afternoon. The standard again was very high, making it more difficult choosing a winner. When all the judges’ scores were added together, I am pleased that we came to the same conclusion as the peoples’ vote which was “Now Where’s that Mole? May I take this

Review of Polling Districts 2018 Charnwood Borough Council are required to review polling districts, places and stations every five years to ensure voting arrangements are up to date and fit for purpose. The Council are inviting comments about the review. If you have any comments they should be sent by e-mail to electoral.services@charnwood.gov.uk or by post to Electoral Services, Charnwood

Since the last election took place I have received information from residents that wheelchair users are unable to enter the building to vote at the Newtown Linford Polling Station at the Sunday School building. I have asked officers at Charnwood Borough Council to review this situation with a view to making alterations to the building to make it accessible to wheelchair users or to find an alternative venue in the village.

Renata performed for us last November at the inauguration of our new piano at Markfield Methodist Church. The recital was an evening few of us will forget. Renata was a student of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and thrilled the full house with her programme of Chopin and Liszt, producing a spontaneous standing ovation at the end. Quite simply, Renata was breath-taking, with a staggering technique and depth of musical maturity. Added to that was her lovely, gentle manner. We are extremely excited to be welcoming her back!  

Bradgate Drama GRANTS FOR LOCAL CAUSES Society bring    Comfort and Joy 

Anstey Town Charity trustees will be holding their annual grants meeting in April next year to distribute funds to local charities and groups

Christmas is apparently the worst time of year for family   upsets as people who don’t really like each other very much are thrown together in an  atmosphere of compulsory enjoyment.

This is brought out hilariously in ‘Comfort and Joy’, a brilliant comedy written by Mike Harding, the famous comedian and folk singer, which is being performed by Bradgate Drama Society as their 2018 Christmas  Production.

  

 Martin and Margaret Duggan have their grumpy  uncle Goff staying with them over the Christmas period and are expecting visits from the rest of the family. Things soon spiral out of control as the family  arrives and other unexpected visitors call by, resulting

With increasing demands for financial support the nine unpaid Trustees are anxious to attract this kind of funding from local bodies and individuals, perhaps in memory of a loved one or in appreciation of the work done by the Charity on behalf the village.

 

They are very grateful for the support they receive from the Anstey Parish Council and the Gala Committee but hope that groups who have benefitted from their grants may feel able to make donations to the Anstey Town Charity to enhance their work in the local community.

They are also interested to know how many Anstey residents will benefit from the grants and are required to include a contact name and address and telephone number with their applications.

The show will be staged at Newtown Linford Village Hall on Thursday 29th.. Friday 30th. November and Saturday 1st. December at 7.30p.m.

The Trustees require an independently up to date verified or audited statement of accounts. It is also helpful if applicants can indicate what activity, age group, equipment or project the grant is needed for and an approximate costing.

We Need Your Help. The charity, under the terms of its scheme laid down by the Charity Commission, cannot invest any of its income, this must be given to the community of Anstey. However the Anstey Town Charity is able to invest grants and donations with the Charities Investment Fund.

in a spectacularly chaotic festive period.

Applicants must be based in the village or serve the community of Anstey. These include non profit organisations, voluntary groups, youth organisations, sports clubs, faith and community groups. Deborah Taylor... Latest News Borough Councillor for Anstey & County Councillor for Bradgate Division 6 Geary Close, Anstey LE7 7LW - Tel: 0116 2350126 Email: Cllr.Deborah.Taylor@charnwood.gov.uk & Deborah.Taylor@leics.gov.uk Facebook: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor

Cllr John Sutherington It was with great sadness that I heard the news of John’s passing in the early hours of Saturday 6th October. John was a true gentleman with a heart of gold. I have had the privilege of working beside John for the last 8 years. Firstly, as fellow Parish Councillors and since May 2015 as Borough Councillors for Anstey. John lived and breathed Anstey and he was very honoured to work hard for all the residents. We had a good friendship and worked together on many issues to provide the best for our residents. I will miss John greatly, his singing, his sense of humour but most of all I will miss seeing him around the village, our late night chats over the telephone and in the Council Chamber. John bravely fought his health problems over the last few years and may he now rest in peace. My thoughts are with his family at this sad time. Goodnight John x On Thursday 20th September I attended the launch of the Children and Families Partnership at County Hall. Leicestershire Children and Families Partnership is made up of senior leaders from key agencies across Leicestershire that work with children, young people and their families. It aims to champion effective partnership working, enabling agencies to recognise shared priorities, to work together better and to deliver outcomes that make a real difference. On Saturday 28th September we had a lovely morning walk around the scarecrow festival in Newtown Linford. The village was busy, and the standard of displays were truly amazing this year. In the afternoon, I headed to John Storer House in Loughborough to attend Charnwood Community Heroes Awards. The event was full of heroes and an afternoon tea was served. We were joined by the Mayor who handed out certificates to the winners in each category. There was a special award given out for the first time this year, the Harry Cook Award. The winner of this award was selected by the Cook family in memory of Harry who played an instrumental part in the success of Loughborough in Bloom. On the Sunday morning I completed the Leicester Memory Walk for Alzheimer’s. Abbey Park was packed with walkers and the atmosphere was amazing. I completed the long route, about 7km, with the ‘pointy nosed team’ (all our sighthound dogs) and they also really enjoyed their long walk. On Tuesday 2nd October I visited Men & Women in Sheds in Loughborough. Charnwood Borough Council supports this

16

project through their grants scheme and the group aims to support people who are lonely or suffer from loneliness. If anyone is interested in joining, please get in touch with me for details. On Wednesday 3rd October I was invited to the AGM of ‘Woodhouse and Woodhouse Eaves Good Neighbour Scheme’. This scheme has been up and running for two years now and I was very impressed with how well they are doing. Keep up the good work. On Sunday 7th October, I visited the Woodhouse Eaves Scarecrow Festival. There was a large amount of displays to see and I managed to see as many as I could in the morning sunshine. In the afternoon I headed to Leicester Cathedral for the annual County Service. On 10th October, I spent ‘World Mental Health Day’ at Police Headquarters attending a conference on Human Aspects following major incidents. It was a thought provoking day attended by several different agencies with excellent speakers. One of the most powerful speakers was a member of Newcastle Council who was involved in supporting the families affected by the Grenfell Tower fire. On Monday 15th October I visited the Peter le Marchant Trust based in Loughborough, who provide canal boat trips and holidays for all ages with any disability or illness. I had a lovely tour of the base and waved off one of the boats as they headed out for the day with a group of people from a cancer charity. The trust has recently been awarded a grant from Charnwood Borough Council of £8,350 towards a young people’s participation and development project.

Stadon Road Bus Stop, Anstey It was brought to my attention that a bus stop was missing on Stadon Road, near to the war memorial. I have contacted the highways department and was advised that there was a bus stop there in the past. A new sign has now been erected onto a lamp post and all the bus companies that use Stadon Road have been advised that they are now required to stop there.

Next Generation Program The Local Government Association runs the ‘Next Generation Program’ which offers ambitious and talented councillors a political development opportunity. Next Generation aims to support and encourage councillors to be bold and confident political leaders, progress in their political career and be champions of local government. I was offered the opportunity to apply by the Leader of Leicestershire County Council

(LCC), who supported my application and I am delighted to have been accepted onto the next course. There are three modules to cover and these include: •

Personal Leadership

Political Leadership

Communication and media skills

These are weekend residential modules and are held at Warwick Conference Centre in Coventry and will be held in November, January and March. I am very much looking forward to my first weekend at the beginning of November and I will update you on my progress as the course proceeds.

ANPR Camera A trial to combat the problems of inconsiderate parking outside schools across the county got underway in mid October. The ‘School Keep Clear’ scheme has been launched with one-off funding of £500,000, to address concerns that parents, residents and teachers have about the dangers of parking outside schools. The scheme aims to make the zig-zag zones enforceable and involves ensuring traffic regulation orders are in place and upgrading mandatory signs and lines. A total of 32 schools that already have the necessary mandatory markings are taking part in the trial. Another 25 schools who have reported issues with parking have also registered an interest but are not yet eligible to begin the trial as further work is needed at their locations. Enforcement officers will continue with their normal duties whilst a camera car is also being used as part of the scheme. Using automatic number plate recognition technology, the car will be used by officers to collect the necessary evidence to enable fines to be issued, via post, to the drivers who park on zig-zag markings.

Recycling Winter opening hours for Leicestershire’s recycling and household waste sites has come into force. From Monday 1st October, winter opening times will apply with all sites continuing to open five days a week from 9am to 4pm. The five day pattern of opening is arranged so that sites are open at weekends and a proportion of sites remain open each day for use by the public in the week. Loughborough’s recycling and household waste site, in Railway Terrace, is temporarily closed to allow for essential maintenance works to be carried out. It is due to reopen in December 2018. To minimise disruption, the Mountsorrel waste site will be open from 9am to 4pm, seven days a week while Loughborough is closed.

Road Repairs LCC are calling for the Government to provide funds towards repairing 56 miles of Leicestershire roads damaged by this summer’s prolonged heatwave. Following one of the driest summers on record, highways have identified sites in need of resurfacing or repair work due to cracking, potholes or defects. A total of £2.25m from next year’s budget for road repairs has been brought forward and been earmarked to fix the worst hit roads across the county, however, more funds are needed to treat all affected sites. Earlier this year, the gritters were deployed during the soaring temperatures to try to protect the roads at risk of melting by spreading around 150 tonnes of granite.

Polling Districts and Stations A consultation about polling districts in Charnwood got underway on 1st October 2018 and residents are urged to have a say. The borough council is required to review polling districts, places and stations every five years to ensure voting arrangements are up to date and fit for purpose. This is an opportunity for people to recommend new polling station locations. They are particularly keen to hear from people who may have views on access arrangements to polling stations as they want to make sure everyone can exercise their right to vote with ease. There are more than 133,000 registered voters in Charnwood and currently there are 76 polling districts. For more information about the review, please visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/pollingreview Anyone who has any ideas or comments should email electoral.services@charnwood. gov.uk or write to Electoral Services, Southfield Road, Loughborough, LE11 2TX. Comments about the review need to be submitted by 12th December 2018. Final proposals will be considered at a full meeting of Charnwood Borough Council on 21st January 2019.

Unitary Authority Proposals I have not printed much information about the proposed unitary council for Leicestershire as I was waiting for more foundations to be laid down. A paper went to Leicestershire County Council’s (LCC) Cabinet on 16th October to further explain the process and timescales. If anyone would like to read the report, you can find it on LCC’s website on the link below and then click on agendas www.leicestershire.gov.uk/about-the-council Below are some of the highlights from the report: Following proposals put forward by LCC’s Leader and in response to the Cabinet resolution of 6th July 2018 proposals are moving forward and there are now outline proposals for the development of a unitary structure for local government in Leicestershire and opportunity for stakeholder engagement. The report going to Cabinet on 16th October also provides an update on the development of a Strategic Alliance for the East Midlands. It is recommended that:

➢ the outline proposals for the development of a unitary structure for local government in Leicestershire and subsequent stake holder engagement be considered ➢ the proposed terms of reference for the working party established by the County Council on 26th September be considered ➢ the present position in respect of a Strategic Alliance for the East Midlands Subject to agreement by the Cabinet, the same report will be considered by the Scrutiny Commission and the Overview and Scrutiny Committees at LCC during November, as follows: ➢ Children and Families Monday 5th November ➢ Adults and Communities Tuesday 6th November ➢ Health – Wednesday 7th November

➢ Environment and Transport Thursday 8th November ➢ Scrutiny Commission Wednesday 14th November A suggested model unitary structure has been developed for the purposes of this report and subsequent stakeholder engagement. Feedback from this engagement, including from the County Council’s Overview and Scrutiny bodies, can be used to develop the model further. It has been based on a single unitary council, but this should not be seen as the only option but is the starting position from which discussions can be continued. When these discussions are completed the proposal will be subject to public consultation and further development. It is recognised there is a need for member involvement and a cross party group has been established to consider the proposals and advise the Cabinet on the next steps including timescales for consultation. There is also a dedicated web page to assess further information: www.futureleicestershire.org

Future Event A series of events are taking place across Leicestershire and Rutland for people interested in becoming a councillor in next year’s local elections. Voters will head to the polls in all seven districts of Leicestershire and in Rutland for the local council elections on 2nd May 2019. Four events are planned to showcase what being a councillor is all about. Unfortunately, you will not receive this report in time for the first event. The events are being promoted by a joint campaign between six of the seven districts and Rutland County Council. ‘Be the Voice of Your Community’ is part of a nationwide initiative to encourage potential community leaders in standing as a councillor. The events are designed to help people find out what it takes to become a local councillor and will cover the nomination process and standing for election, the role of a councillor and what support is available,

When the Whistle Blows: The Pals Battalions. Help for Heroes As we approach the centenary of the end of the First World War, a singer-songwriter from Cropston has released a charity song available on download called “When the Whistle Blows” to raise funds for Help for Heroes. The song is a commemoration of the Pals Battalions and in particular that of the Football Battalions. At the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, Lord Kitchener was of the opinion that the key to winning the war was with overwhelming manpower. However, the British Army had always relied on professional (rather than conscript) soldiers and consequently had significantly fewer numbers than most countries. It was suggested that men would be more inclined to enlist if they knew that they were going to serve alongside their friends and colleagues. The first Pals Battalion came from workers in the City of London and within a week 1,600 men had enlisted. The success encouraged Lord Kitchener to promote the idea of organising similar recruitment campaigns throughout the entire country and by the end of September Pals Battalions had formed in more than 50 towns and cities - some boasting more than one battalion. Despite being at war, the 1914-15 football season continued, although not without controversy. Initially it was thought that continuation of professional football would help keep the public’s spirits up. There was much public debate and opinion soon turned against footballers both in England and Scotland, and many soldiers complained that able- bodied men were not doing their duty. A campaign was launched to suspend professional football in Britain and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle publicly objected to football being played and appealed for footballers to volunteer for service. Football grounds were often the centre of the war effort where funds were raised, men enlisted and their facilities used for drill and training. In November 1914, the first British football battalion was launched. At least 16 players from Heart of Midlothian (Hearts) enlisted en masse along with several boardroom and staff members. As many as 500 supporters and season ticket holders also joined up plus players and supporters of several other Scottish clubs. The 16th Royal Scots became known as McCrae’s Battalion. Inspired by McCrae’s Battalion, the first English Football Pals was the 17th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment (subsequently known as The Die-hards) formed in December 1914 when 30 players signed up at its formation. By March 1915, over 120 professional footballers had signed up for the battalion including the “whole of Clapton Orient” (known now as Leyton Orient). However, not everyone was happy with the number of footballers enlisting as there were some 1800 players who were eligible, although many chose to join other regiments. There were recruiting events all over England and numbers slowly increased and by January 1915 there were in excess of 600 men. Referees and officials also joined the 17th and fans were encouraged to follow in their heroes' footsteps and fight alongside the men they cheered on every Saturday afternoon. Rugby players, athletes and a variety of other sportsmen also joined the battalion. The 2nd Football Battalion was the 23rd (Service) Battalion, Middlesex Regiment formed in June 1915. There were also many unofficial football battalions where players and supporters joined their local regiment. There were also Rugby Battalions and other unofficial sports battalions. With the introduction of conscription in March 1916, there was no further need for Pals Battalions and despite being on the frontline for some time, many did not to see their first major action until the Battle of the Somme in July 1916. All three Football Battalions fought in the battle and this marked a turning point for the Pals Battalions. On the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the British Army lost around 20,000 men and lots of Pals Battalions were decimated. The heavy casualties that Pals Battalions suffered had a devastating impact on towns, villages and communities and many were subsequently disbanded or amalgamated to reduce this effect. It is impossible to say how many professional footballers gave their lives in the war but it has been estimated that around 300 from Scottish, English and Welsh clubs died. There were many others who returned so severely wounded they were unable to play the game again. There are numerous individual stories to be told and a number of footballers were decorated for their courage and heroism. According to the website “footballandthefirstworldwar” at least 8 players and 19 former players of Leicester Fosse (now Leicester City) served during the war. It was felt that footballers made good soldiers and the Commander of the 1st Football Battalion, Col Henry T Fenwick said: “I knew nothing of professional footballers when I took over this Battalion. But I have learnt to value them. I would go anywhere with such men. Their esprit de corps was amazing. This feeling was mainly due to football – the link of fellowship which bound them together. Football has a wonderful grip on these men ........” For further information visit: www.footballandthefirstworldwar.org or Google “Football Pals Battalions”. A number of English and Scottish football clubs also have information on their websites and there are numerous books on the subject available. FILM PRESENTATIONS

Christmas Bazaar Christmas Bazaar in aid of St Paul's Church 1:30-3:30 pm, Saturday 1 December 2018, Village Hall, Woodhouse Eaves, 50p entry fee.

Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council In October, we had another full house to watch our true story. "The Post" presented legal wrangling between the U.S. press and President Nixon over Vietnam secrets. Meryl Streep's and Tom Hanks' characters published controversial government papers because they determined that "The Press is to protect the governed, not the governors". This was a powerful film.

Tombola, books, crafts and refreshments with fun for all including a visit from Santa!!

"The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" will be shown on November 9th and last 123 minutes.

A young upcoming novelist decides to write a book about the wartime experiences of Guernsey residents.

24th and 25th November 11am - 4pm

November’s film reminds us that letter-writing is such a pleasure, sometimes revealing mysteries and romance. This is, indeed, a magical book club with true friendships and unbreakable bonds.

"The Greatest Showman" will be shown on December 14th and lasts 105 minutes. Our December musical film is ideal to prepare for Christmas joy. Hugh Jackman sings so well as P.T. Barnum who is a politician, businessman and showman in the Barnum and Bailey Circus. This “rags to riches” story is touching at times and such a pleasure to watch.

Loughborough Flower Lovers' Club Open Meeting Tickets are now on sale for Loughborough Flower Lovers' Club's Christmas Open Meeting on Thursday,15 November, when members of the public are invited to what promises to be a wonderful evening's entertainment by the celebrated floral designer, John Chennell, with a demonstration entitled 'The Magic of Christmas'. John, a NAFAS National and International Demonstrator, Adjudicator and Instructor from Wellingborough, is renowned for his breathtaking floral displays. Although the performance starts at 7.30 pm, the doors will open at 6.30 pm to give all those attending time for light refreshments. There will also be a giant tombola and a raffle. The raffle prizes will, of course, be the spectacular flower arrangements produced during the evening. Anyone who loves flowers or would just like an enjoyable evening out in good company is welcome to come along to the friendly club. There's no audience participation, just sit back, relax, and be entertained. The event will be held at Our Lady's Convent School, Gray Street, Loughborough, LE11 2DZ, where there is plenty of free parking within the school grounds. Tickets cost £10 and are available from 01509 880099, 01509 842334, 01509 853740, or on the door. The Club, which meets at Our Lady's Convent School hall, goes from strength to strength with 80 current members who meet once a month to enjoy demonstrations by professional guest speakers. Last year saw its 65th Blue Sapphire Anniversary which was celebrated with a dinner at the Griffin Inn, Swithland, followed by the cutting of a celebratory cake made by a committee member. More recently, the annual summer luncheon was held in Oaks in Charnwood Village Hall, where members and visitors, including representatives from local clubs, gathered for a delicious buffet. This was followed by an entertaining and amusing demonstration entitled 'In My Dreams I Travelled Far' by the Club's Chairman, Mrs Pat Billing, herself a professional demonstrator, who skilfully produced many colourful floral designs using a wide range of fresh flowers with exciting backdrops. The event was well attended and was enjoyed by everyone. Each lucky raffle prize winner was able to take home one of the arrangements. Monthly meetings run from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm at the above address, when new members and visitors can be assured of a very warm welcome. Admission for visitors is £5. If you would like to know more, please ring 01509 853740.

Christmas craft fair will raise vital funds for local heart charity On Sunday 4 November, local heart charity, *the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust (JHMT) will be holding their annual Christmas craft fair. Now in its 3rd year, the event will be held at the new Mountsorrel Memorial Centre, and will be open from 10.30-4.30pm. The JHMT Christmas Fair will be a chance for Christmas shoppers to choose from a range beautiful gifts from a range of uniquely crafted items made with skill, love and care by talented local artisans. Items will include jewellery, shabby chic furniture, home interiors and accessories, paintings and artwork, glassware, candles, cards, craft gins, local fine wines and delicatessen goods all with the emphasis on quality products which are not available on the high street. Angie Humphries from the Trust said: “The Joe Humphries Memorial Trust was formed out of the tragic loss of my amazing son Joe who collapsed and died aged just 14 after a run with one of his best friends. “Joe was a victim of sudden arrhythmic death syndrome (SADS), a heart condition which causes sudden, unexpected death in young people and can often go undiagnosed. The void which was left by Joe’s tragically sudden death can never be filled, but Joe’s legacy is the fabulous work of the Trust created in his name (www.jhmt.org.uk) “By coming along to our Christmas craft fair, you can buy unique eclectic and beautiful gifts, have a piece of homemade cake with a cuppa and help to save young lives in the process.” The craft fair is free to attend – although a discretionary donation on entry would be very much appreciated. All proceeds will go to the Joe Humphries Memorial Trust. For more information on the work of the Trust, visit www.jhmt.org.uk

THE MONDAY CLUB CROPSTON AND THURCASTON

My Life as a Prison Officer Mr David Walmsley kindly stepped in to talk to us this month, as our original speaker was unable to come. Now retired from the Prison Service, he gave us a general view of some of the things which he and his colleagues had to deal with over more than 30 years. He came into the Service from an Army background, and was not sure what to expect when he started his training. He did a two-year training course and worked his way through the ranks, ending up as Governor of different types of prisons, all around the country. He later acted as a consultant in a group trying to improve the prison environment for inmates and staff alike. His first position was at Reading, where Oscar Wilde was incarcerated. At that time it was a Borstal recall centre with a harsh regime, but about to change its role. He found it strange. Prisoners had no radios, or access to drugs; newspapers were rationed to one per floor. He was posted to Long Kesh (The Maze) in Northern Ireland, with Nissen huts and watchtowers. Strangely enough, men of different factions seemed to get along in there instead of trying to kill each other. A riot involving about 150 men was quelled by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards; the officer detailed six men to sort it out! After a spell at Prison Officer Staff College, Mr Walmsley went to Felsham near Heathrow, a psychiatric unit, where he had backup. The inmates were there for between six months and two years, depending on their behavour. They learnt routine and discipline, maybe for the first time in their lives, and could attend classes to learn how to read. Every month the staff would meet to recommend treatment for the boys there. Unfortunately, some of them had violent tendencies and had to be sent away. By contrast, Lowdham Grange near Nottingham was an “open Borstal. It was run on a “house system, with a Matron, which was found to be a beneficial influence on the lads’ behaviour. Boys were encouraged to help the community. After aiding pensioners

6

to do their Christmas shopping, one boy reported that “hisâ€? lady had been shop-lifting! Sports were encouraged, and old boys were invited to sports days. One was so keen to come that he stole a car to get there. They were taken camping in the Lake District; some city youths had never seen cows or sheep before. Mr Walmsley was then moved to Leicester Prison, which held Category A prisoners (i.e. considered to be very dangerous), and was like many others overcrowded. The Government never provided enough money for the necessary improvements, and there were riots, although these were contained. Visitors called it a concrete tomb. Once some Japanese tourists stopped outside the castle-like outer wall to take photographs. They wanted to know what the building was. After trying to explain the word “prisonâ€?, an Englishman offered the words, “Bridge on the River Kwaiâ€?, to which one Japanese tourist smiled and said, “Ah, Sir Alec Guinness live here!â€? After that he was moved to Nottingham, which was also run on traditional, outdated lines, and was not a happy place to work. However, one high profile prisoner there later wrote a book and sent a copy to Mr Walmsley, inscribed “with respectâ€?. He was able to run a half marathon in there; and he joked that all the football team matches were played at home! When he went to the Prison Service headquarters as a consultant, he helped to develop plans for the future. He remarked that it is hard to manage change. In Yorkshire, there was a male Governor overseeing female inmates. The gardener left him a present, long after she had been released ‌ the daffodils she had planted spelt out a rude message! After that he moved to Lincoln, another traditional institution. He encountered another high profile prisoner there, who was a large man and very much feared generally, but when this man was given an unusual opportunity to work with handicapped children, he proved to be remarkably good

37,850

with them. Later he sent Mr Walmsley greetings cards. The staff had to search bags for illicit goods coming into or going out of the prison. One searcher had a surprise when the lady chaplain was found to be carrying bright red stiletto heeled shoes! His next posting was to a prison for sex offenders near Nottingham, a subject which was never discussed openly in the past. Here, Mr Walmsley says, they had a successful treatment programme for prisoners; the staff were excellent, and there was a strong support system for them too. Prison staff were regularly visited by representatives from the Home Office, to make sure that everything was being run properly. Mr Walmsley remembers one abusive man he ran across to whom he took a great dislike, who headed a powerful and vociferous union. This man was later imprisoned for embezzling union funds. Various activities were tried out, such as the Pimlico Opera, which raised money for charity and went down very well. They performed “The Assassin! One programme he introduced was “Fathers Inside, which helps men stay in touch with their families. Other roles Mr Walmsley undertook included investigating serious incidents, and being a hostage negotiator. He was also an instructor in the control and restraint of disruptive people. He always made a point of walking around the prison every day, and speaking to every member of his staff. Most prisoners are normal, not many are really bad. It has been called “an imperfect organisation; he believes that inmates come there as their punishment, not for punishment. He concluded by saying it was rather a lonely job, but very rewarding and fulfilling. Monday Club meetings start at 2.15pm on the second Monday of each month. Visitors and new members are most welcome to meetings (please see local posters for details). On 12th November we have a talk by the jeweller Cathy Stephens. Some places are still available for an early Christmas Dinner at Birstall Golf Club on 3rd December, with musical entertainment. ANSTEY CHESS CLUB You may have all seen in the news recently that a couple of Premier League footballers have now 'revealed themselves' as chess players. Part of the revelation was to promote the upcoming World Championship match where Norwegian Magnus Carlsen will be defending his title against the American Fabiano Caruana in London. Liverpool player Trent Alexander Arnold played a game against Magnus Carlsen (and lost in 17 moves!) but Trent was told to bring his chess set by Eric Dier of Tottenham Hotspur when they were on England duty together. The reason that these guys play is that it keeps their mind going, keeps them thinking and promotes logical thought - there can be no better recommendation than that! Perhaps Trent Alexander Arnold or Eric Dier might enjoy the free sessions that I run on Saturday mornings from 10am-1pm at Anstey Library? You can come down to the sessions too to learn a new hobby from scratch, play a game if you want to play a game of chess or refresh your skills if you haven't played for an undisclosed amount of years! Chess is a fantastic hobby that can help your mind, keep your brain ticking and help you socially too. Chess does not discriminate age, gender, race or ability so please come along if you're interested! We also meet occasionally on Thursday evenings at the Stadon Sports and Social Club in Anstey from 7:30pm. Please call or email to check that we'll be there. This is for more competitive chess that may not suit all players. New members more than welcome to either session - Grandmasters or just learning. If you, or anybody you know, may want to play chess, please pass them my details! League update - We've had three matches since the first league game and we've had a new player make his debut for us - Matt Wilson. Matt has recently joined from our Saturday sessions and was interested in improving his game by playing competitively. We have now played 4 games and we sit on 3 points in 7th place out of 9. Won 0, drawn 3 (1 of those draws was in unusual circumstances) and lost 1. November Club Nights/Fixtures 8th November - HOME vs Melton Mowbray 4 15th November - Club Night 22nd November - AWAY vs Latimer 2 You are welcome along on any night so please pop along to see what we're all about.

A difficult but promising start to the season for Anstey Rugby Club After Trinity Guild called off our opening game, September saw Anstey RFC playing away for their first three fixtures of the season. Kicking of the campaign was a trip to Aylestone Saint James (Jimmies) Anstey travelling with almost a full team after a couple of very late drop outs. Jimmies had spares so helped even up the teams leading to hard fought level game seeing Jimmies win by 45 points to 35. The following week we were due to be at Home but an unfortunate double booking of the changing rooms we use at Martin High meant a very last minute switch to playing away at Leicester Forest. Again a few late player call offs made worse by the sudden venue switch left Anstey travelling with a reduced side. Our hosts this week were not quite so accommodating with their spare payers and the game started with 14 playing 12 and later on 15 v 12 Despite this disparity of numbers Anstey scores three tries courtesy of Andrew Pollock, Jamie Mason and Matt Belcher, but finished loosing by 62-19, not a bad result in the

circumstances. Our third game was against a powerful mixed side, despite being billed as Bosworth Social, at Market Bosworth. Despite the large loosing margin of 58 points our team came back with some positive points to build on during the next training sessions. Matt Belcher is our Club Coach and is organising regular sessions every Wednesday starting at 6.30pm at our ground adjacent to the Martin High School on Link Road. All players both new or regular, experienced or total novices, fit or unfit, old or young are all welcome. Matches

Following our AGM in July a full committee was formed with with Shane Frear as Chairman, Chris Apperley as Secretary, Liam Curtis as 1st Team Captain and Treasurer, Matt Belcher as Club Coach and Social Secretary, Ash Street is Club Captain also assisting Liam with finances and Ian Pollock organises our fixtures. Details for all the club officials are on the Anstey RFC noticeboard inside our clubhouse at The Coach and Horses pub in the Nook in Anstey.
