Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club
The “Have-a-Go trophy, introduced this year, was won by Meg Grant. This trophy was added to encourage more people to ‘have a go’, and a class in each section was specifically allocated for this purpose. First signs are encouraging, and we hope to entice more first-time exhibitors next year.
come along and present cups and trophies to all our winners. Thanks also to all the exhibitors and visitors and everyone who contributed towards the smooth running of the Show. See you all again next year.
Annual Show 2019 The Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club’s 36th Annual Garden, Craft & Produce Show was held at the Richard Hill Primary School on Saturday 7th September. The sun was out early morning and continued to shine throughout the day and with a steady stream of exhibitors it ensured the Show benches were looking splendid by the time judging time arrived. The superb quality of entries in the flower and floral art sections led the way, but all sections were looking splendid with lots of entries in our 68 classes. Congratulations to Annette Spurr who took two of the top trophies, the Sedgwick Cup awarded for the ‘Highest Overall Points in the Show’ and the Jubilee Challenge trophy ‘Garden Club member with the highest overall points’.
The “Have-a-Go trophy, introduced this year, was won by Meg Grant
Special thanks to the Brownies for their outstanding contributions to the children’s section. Although the total number of children’s exhibits was considerably down on recent years the standard was extremely high. Something we always like to see are new names on our winners list and this year we have five, Sue Holyoake and Meg Grant in the Floral Arts section Di Longwith (Preserves & Wine) Andrew Holyoake (Home Baking section) and Alan Talbot who won the Novice Trophy. Congratulations go to all our winners for their sterling efforts.
The Gardening Club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall Whether an experienced gardener or an enthusiastic beginner we are sure you will find something of interest in this year’s programme. The next club events are: Wednesday 9 October, 7.45 pm The Life and Colour of the Pyrenees Antony Powell Anthony has worked extensively in nurseries and private gardens in France and is currently working as a self-employed gardener in Berkshire. In 1975 Antony's parents retired to the South West of France and so he had many opportunities to visit the area at all times of the year. Anthony starts by giving us a brief history of the region then looks at the flora and fauna that grow there throughout the year. He will take us on a trip through the Western Pyrenees and the talk will cover many of the interesting flowers to be found in the mountains as well as their varied habitats. It also includes a look at some of the other interesting features of the area that make it such a wonderful place to visit.

Report from Anstey Parish Council Grant Applications - Each year Anstey Parish Council offers an opportunity for community groups to apply for funding from the Council. The deadline for completed grant application forms is the 31st October 2019. If your group could benefit from a grant, download an application form from the website www.ansteypc.org.uk complete and return it to the parish office, Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road or email: clerk@ansteypc.org In the first instance the application will be considered by the Finance Committee at their meeting in November and a decision will be made by Full Council at their meeting on the 10th December 2019. Neighbourhood
Plan - The 2011 Localism Act introduced the concept of Neighbourhood Plans. These plans give local communities a much great opportunity to influence future development in their area. A neighbourhood plan is not created to stop development or undermine current strategic policies from Charnwood Borough Council. The plan is to shape and direct sustainable development in the parish. Once approved the policies will take precedence over non-strategic policies in the Local Plan and become the principle planning document for the area. The Parish Council is looking to lead and facilitate a Neighbourhood Plan for Anstey. The whole of the parish of Anstey is the designed area. This is an important and substantial piece of work that is expected to take time to complete. The Parish Council will be commissioning a consultant to guide us through the process. This is a great opportunity to shape the future of Anstey to make sure the things that are important to you are included within the plan such as; • When there is further development in Anstey where do you think that should be? • What extra facilities are required to support a larger population? • Are further community facilities required?
• Environment concerns are address and Green Space requirements considered • Community transport and highway concerns addressed • Future local employment There will be plenty of opportunities to become involved in the process, you could become part of the advisory committee and attend any planned open events. If you have expertise, enthusiasm and an interest in shaping the future of Anstey your contributions will be very welcome. Initially we are wanting to hear what people like or dislike about Anstey. Do forward your views to email: clerk@ansteypc.org telephone: (0116) 236 2646.
Public Toilets -
Unfortunately, the public toilets in The Nook have recently been vandalised. The ladies toilet needed significant repairs which meant they were closed for 2 weeks in September. The cost of these repairs has been £1700.00. This type of vandalism costs everyone and is extremely disappointing as such a lot of money was spent at the beginning of the year refurbishing them. We are pleased to say they are now open, and we hope they will continue to be a useful facility within the village.
Anstey Gala -
The Gala was a huge success this year and the good weather on the day encouraged people to stay out and enjoy the day. The dog show was again very well attended. The Parish Council’s thanks go to the Gala Committee who worked tirelessly to make this event successful, this small group of residents work really hard to pull this event together for the village. Our thanks also go to all residents who took the time to give us your views about a Neighbourhood plan for Anstey.
Plastic Free Community - Over the next few weeks we will be writing to businesses within Anstey to find out if they are able to come on board with creating a plastic free community. We are aware that there are
many businesses in Anstey that we may not be aware of and therefore may not receive a letter from us. We are wanting to hear from business’s that are interested in being awarded with ‘plastic free status’. If you can demonstrate three ways that they have been able to remove single use plastics from the day to day operations, your business will be able to work in partnership with the parish council to achieve this status. The parish council are committed to becoming a plastic free and organisation and are taking the following steps. • Encouraging hall users to use our equipment and not plastic alternatives when they have their celebrations. • The Jubilee Hall is a drop off point to recycle crisp packets and to date we have collected over 3000 crisp packets. These are worth 1p per packet to charity. • The Jubilee Hall has become a ‘refill station’ for people to refill their water bottles. • There is a long term plan to provide a water fountain at the Jubilee Hall. Parish Council Meetings will be held on the following Tuesday evenings 8th October, 29th October, starting at 7.30 at the Jubilee Hall, all members of the public are welcome to these meetings.
Liz Hawkes - Clerk to the Council Your councillors are: Martin Broomhead (Chairman), Glyn McAllister (Vice-Chairman), Nigel Aston, Vicky Ball, Stuart Booth, Sue Billington, Grant Cotton, Mandy Jordan, Dave Parker, Kathy Peake, Murray Peat, Roger Peat, Lee Potter, Matt Rogers. Your councillors can be contacted through the council offices: Tel: (0116) 236 2646 or email: clerk@ansteypc.org
Meet Your Councillors - The Parish Council is holding a Councillor Surgery on Saturday 2nd November 2019 between 10am and 12 noon at Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey, Leicester, LE7 7AY. This is an opportunity to meet your Councillors and raise any concerns you may have within the village. No appointments are necessary, please feel free to come along.

Bus Service 120
their litter picking days, this one organised by CPRE, Leicestershire as part of their annual ‘Green Clean’. Ably lead by local organiser, Pam Crankshaw, who stated ‘we have 16 volunteers , who regularly go out in the Woodhouse Parish and other local areas, sometimes as a group, in pairs or individually. Our groups started a few years ago and we hope to play a part in transforming our local green spaces back to a beautiful litter free state through the collective efforts of people who either live in, or simply love the countryside.’
I will be attending the Community Engagement meeting about the bus service120, which is the only 2 hourly service through the village of Newtown Linford. The meeting has been widely advertised for Tuesday 8th October at the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey, starting at 3.30pm. How things change in a life time. Thinking back to when I was at school in the village, I recall, many times at the weekends and hoildays up to 12 buses would be queing up at the Village Hall bus stop, to take visitors to Bradgate Park back to Leicester.
Litter Picking I am pleased to support the local volunteers who dedicate so much of their time making sure our local area within the Charnwood Forest is free from litter. In my view, it is so sad that we have to clean up after the irresponsible actions of a minority of people who have no regard for our local environment and the effects this has on wildlife. All too often, we see plastic containers and glass bottles strewn around our local highways, many times thrown from passing vehicles. I am pleased that there seem to be initiatives in progress to help reduce this blight on our countryside. I joined the volunteers at the start of one of
By the actions of these dedicated volunteers, I am sure we have seen a reduction in litter around our local roads. I am most grateful to all the volunteers especially Pam, who I understand has been involved with litter picking for nine years, contributing so much time for the wellbeing of our green environment.
Top award for Armed Forces Support Charnwood and Rushcliffe Borough Councils have received a Gold Award for their support to the Armed Forces. The Councils have made pledges under the Armed Forces Covenant to help support the Armed Forces community including serving personnel, reservists, veterans and families to ensure that they do not face any disadvantage as a result of their service. A ceremony will be held in London later this year when the Councils will formally receive the award.
Planning Update You may recall, I objected to the planning application to erection of two semi-detached dwellings on land adjacent to the former Bradgate Park Nursing Home, Brand Hill, Woodhouse Eaves. This application was refused by Charnwood Borough Council. This decision to refuse has now gone to appeal to be determined by a Government Inspector. Before the deadline for written submissions to the Inspector, I did make further comments that expanded on my original submissions to the Council. Making reference to the erection of eight detached houses already on this site and a legal agreement to purchase two affordable properties within Woodhouse Eaves, or an affordable housing contribution paid in lieu of providing the affordable dwellings. Full details can be found on the Charnwood Borough Council’s website under planning application P/17/2241/2. I am hopeful we will have a successful outcome to this appeal soon. I have received information from officers at Charnwood Borough Council about the planning application to externally mount a defibrillator box onto Old John. You may recall, I have ‘called in’ this application to be decided by a Plans Committee. There have been objections to this proposal. People are of the opinion, if a defibrillator is needed at this part of Bradgate, it should be on a ‘stand-alone unit’ adjacent to this iconic building and not attached. When I was Chairman of the Trustees, I worked with the Ambulance Service to install the first

Recycling Simplified Across Leicestershire
BIG AUTUMN SALE
Don’t let your recycling go to waste. District Councils in Leicestershire, including Charnwood Borough Council have joined forces to make recycling easier than ever by providing a more consistent recycling service for Leicestershire residents. The majority of County residents are now able to recycle exactly the same materials in their recycling bins, wherever they live in the County. Hopefully this will also encourage residents to recycle more things. A complete list of items which can be recycled can be found at www.lesswaste.org.uk/items-accepted-forrecycling-at-casepak.

In a separate note I received, it was stated that one of the key issues with recycling is that the contamination rate is up at 12%. I know so many residents are keen to recycle as much as possible, but contamination of items in your wheelie bin can be a real issue in the recycling rates. I understand the top three contaminants are nappies, food waste and textiles. If you need to contact me on any issues, please write to 10 Groby Lane, Newtown Linford, Leicester. Charnwood Museum rides high on Visit Britain survey Charnwood Museum is one of the most visited free attractions in the East Midlands according to Visit Britain. The museum in Loughborough, run by Charnwood Borough Council, was the 11th most popular free attraction in 2018 with nearly 45,000 visitors. Cllr Jenny Bokor, the council’s lead member for Loughborough, said: “It is fantastic to see that Charnwood Museum continues to punch above its weight when it comes to delivering fantastic exhibitions, events and talks to the local community. “The museum is a great place to visit for all the family and is situated in the award-winning Queens Park along with the Carillon. Congratulations to the team for all their hard work and efforts to make the museum such an enjoyable place to visit across Loughborough, Charnwood and the East Midlands as a whole.” The museum has an excellent record of working with schools and the local community, which resulted in them winning the community engagement award at the NUS National Green Impact Awards last year. The award recognised teams who have engaged people in activities focussed around sustainability. While the museum is owned and operated by the borough Council, the exhibits are provided by Leicestershire County Council. Visit Britain is the national tourism agency that aims to build the countries tourism product and raise Britain’s profile worldwide. Each year, they invite visitor attractions nationwide to take part in an annual survey, recording visitor numbers alongside key information like entrance fees and visitor profiles.
Bradgate Rotary’s Charity Fun Day at Ulverscroft Grange Bradgate Rotary’s Family Fun Day and ‘Obstacular’, which took place on Sunday 15th September at Ulverscroft Grange in Whitwick Road, Markfield, raised over £1100 for local charities, including LOROS, Canine Partners and Prostaid. Attractions included an obstacle course, classic cars, dancing display, bouncy castle, Go-karting, face-painting, blacksmith demonstration and ukulele band. Druck, based in Groby, sponsored the event, and the Shuttlewood Clark Foundation provided the venue. A Bradgate Rotary spokesperson said: “We’re delighted that our first Family Fun Day went so well. We had really positive feedback from those attending the event, and the obstacle course proved popular with families. Ulverscroft Grange is in such beautiful surroundings too, and we’re hoping that the event has helped to make more people aware of it.”
Save money – go energy shopping Residents are being reminded to sign up to the Charnwood Big Switch for the chance of saving more than £240 a year on their energy bills. The Council launched the Charnwood Big Switch last month and residents are being urged to register before the first auction takes place on October 8. Cllr Paul Mercer, lead member for housing said: “There are only a few weeks left for residents to register for the first auction. “This scheme can help residents get a better deal on their energy bills by switching suppliers. We understand that it can be daunting for some people to switch their suppliers which is why we’ve launched this collective scheme. “Residents don’t have to switch if they don’t want to but by registering, they will be able to see if they are able to get a better deal and save money.” Charnwood Big Switch is delivered by the Council and iChoosr, an independent specialist provider in collective energy switching. Collective switching gives people the opportunity to group together and pay less for their energy. Residents can switch electric or dual fuel and can choose to have paper bills or to manage their accounts online. iChoosr hold three auctions a year and energy suppliers compete to provide the lowest priced tariff in the auction. It is free for residents to register their interest and registrations for the first auction are now open. Deborah Taylor... Latest News County Councillor for Bradgate Division 6 Geary Close, Anstey LE7 7LW - Tel: 0116 2350126 - Email: Deborah.Taylor@leics.gov.uk Facebook: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor In the morning on Saturday 14th September I held a residents’ surgery along with Cllr Baines. A very busy month following the summer recess. In addition to the usual meetings, here is a flavour of some of the events I have attended along with some good training sessions. On Saturday 7th September I attended four village shows and fetes within my Division along with Edward Argar MP, thankfully with very good weather. We walked around the Anstey Gala first, then onto Swithland for their 43rd Annual Flower and Vegetable Show, onto Woodhouse Eaves for their Annual Horticultural and Craft Show and finally onto the Thurcaston and Cropston Gardening Club 36th Annual Garden, Craft and Produce Show where I was delighted once again to present the trophies to all the worthy winners. On Thursday 12th September I accompanied the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) to have a look round ‘The Annex’. The PCC is investing £24,121 into the new project called ‘The Annex’, led by Falcon Support Services, over the next 12 months, which will provide a safe place for sex workers to access support. Charnwood Borough Council has also granted the project £10,000 to provide a drop-in facility for sex workers in the area, helping them access specialist advice and help relating to housing, substance misuse, offending, welfare and benefits guidance, specialist preventative services including free contraception/pregnancy testing and links with GU clinics, Hep C screening and First Aid training. The centre will also provide laundry facilities, access to clothes/toiletries and food supplies, and hot food and drinks from the kitchen. It is hoped that the support offered will enable sex workers to begin to change the direction of their lives.
In the afternoon I headed over to John Storer House for the Charnwood Heroes Awards. All the winners were invited to the lovely afternoon tea before heading into the main hall for the presentation event where I was able to warmly welcome and congratulate all the winners and present the award for the ‘Top Team’. In the evening I was invited to the final performance of ‘We did it our way’ by Anstey Players. After 27 years the sad decision has been taken to close the group down due to lack of members. It was a great performance and highlighted many sketches from previous shows and I was honoured to be able to enjoy their last performance. Well done to all members, past and present for all your hard work over the years. On Tuesday 17th I spent 4 hours undergoing media training. This involved learning how to deal with press requests and how to ensure you can get your message across. This also involved doing a mock radio and TV interview and then watching the playback, which is one of the worst things to do but it does help you improve your skills very quickly! On Wednesday 18th I attended the Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport’s review of the Holiday Activity Programme which was run jointly with Leicestershire County Council (LCC) under

their Innovation Partnership with Barnardo’s at Beaumanor Hall. With grant funding of £850,00 from the Department for Education, the County were able to provide holiday activities with a healthy meal for over 2,000 vulnerable children and their families during the school holidays. Some of the suppliers that helped run some of the activities across the county were able to provide some feedback on what had worked well and where the struggles had been. There was some heart felt stories that were shared to show that this programme supported families far more than we could ever have expected. Over the summer there were 30,144 opportunities and 120,546 hours of activity for children in Leicestershire. On Thursday 19th I spent the morning in a joint meeting with Barnardo’s to review the first year of the joint Innovation Partnership with LCC. We were facilitated by Dr Julie Harris from Bedford University who is writing the first-year evaluation on the partnership. The partnership was set up in December 2018 and its aim was to co-invest, co-design, co-produce and co-deliver services that meet the needs of young people in Leicestershire, from those children on the edge of care through to those leaving care. The first design brief being drawn up is looking at residential placements for young people.

A46 Anstey Lane Work on the £10.5m scheme started last month. Leicestershire County Council is leading the project on behalf of the City Council to increase capacity on the A5630 Anstey Lane and A46 to reduce journey times. ➢ The scheme will see the existing single lane section of road between the A46 junction and Bennion Road roundabout turned into a dual carriageway. ➢ Additional lanes will be created at the approach to the roundabouts at both junctions with new traffic lights installed. ➢ Pedestrian and cycling routes along the busy stretch of road will also be improved as part of the scheme. ➢ The footpath between Gorse Hill to Bennion Road will be closed from 11th September 2019 to February 2020 and the bridleway between Anstey Lane to Lady Hay Road will also be closed from 19th September 2019 to December 2020. The programme of works, which is due to be completed by Summer 2020 are designed to help accommodate the extra traffic that will
be generated by the 3,000 home Ashton Green development led by Leicester City Council. I will be receiving monthly updates and will be sharing these with Anstey Parish Council so if any residents have any queries or worries, please get in touch with myself or the Parish Council.
David Jennings It is with great sadness that I have to report the death of David Jennings the County Councillor for Cosby and Countesthorpe electoral division. David had served as a County Councillor since 1997. Not only was David a long-serving member of the county council, he was a great ambassador for local government and hugely respected by all members across the Council and beyond. David had great passion for the county and his commitment to the people he represented. David also gave wise counsel in challenging times and had a tremendous sense of humour. He will be greatly missed but will leave an incredible legacy. David was also the Vice-Chairman of the County Council when he passed away.
The next free monthly cafe event is 2-4pm Friday 25 October.

ANSTEY POLICE MATTERS Priorities
crimes and 2 burglary dwellings reported.
Speeding: Continues to be one of our priorities and we will continue to undertake speed enforcement operations. We continue to complete patrols in areas which have already been identified to prevent and deter.
Crime Prevention
Drugs: We have seen an improvement in the number of reports being made regarding cannabis use in locations in the village. We will continue to work with the community and the council regarding these issues. Parking: We are working with the councillors and council to raise awareness and find appropriate solutions. Quad/Motorbikes: This is still a regular occurrence in the village, we would urge anyone with any information to please contact us via neighbourhood link, ringing 101, at one of our beat surgeries or through our social media accounts.
News Did you know that we have an office within Anstey Parish Councils Jubilee Hall? Well we do, we are not there all the time but the council provides us with the office so we have somewhere to work from in Anstey. You will often find a member of the beat team using the office, it is not manned constantly but if you ever need advice feel free to knock on the door. We are not a Police station so unfortunately won’t be able to create a crime report, please follow the usual ways to do so by calling 101/999 or using the Leicestershire Police website.

Fraud is when a person lies to you, or ‘scams’ you, to gain an advantage, such as taking your money or learning private information about you. This could be via email, text, phone or in person, either on the street or on your doorstep. Some adults may be especially vulnerable to fraud and financial abuse. If you’re concerned about someone you know, contact your local social services and ask for Adult Social Care. With a little knowledge you can protect yourself from fraudsters too: For more information and help and to report fraud, go to Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud and cybercrime reporting centre.
Ten golden rules to prevent fraud Remember these ten golden rules to help you prevent fraud and beat the scammers. ➢ Be suspicious of all ‘too good to be true’ offers and deals. There are no guaranteed get-rich-quick schemes. ➢ Don’t agree to offers or deals immediately. Insist on time to get independent or legal advice before making a decision. ➢ Don’t hand over money or sign anything until you’ve checked someone’s credentials and their company’s. ➢ Never send money to anyone you don’t know or trust, whether in the UK or abroad, or use methods of payment you’re not comfortable with.
➢ Never give banking or personal details to anyone you don’t know or trust. This information is valuable so make sure you protect it. ➢ Always log on to a website directly rather than clicking on links in an email. ➢ Don’t just rely on glowing testimonials. Find solid, independent evidence of a company’s success. ➢ Always get independent or legal advice if an offer involves money, time or commitment. ➢ If you spot a scam or have been scammed, report it and get help. Contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or at Action Fraud. Call us on 101 if you know the suspect or they’re still in the area. If you're deaf or hard of hearing, use our textphone service on 18001 101. ➢ Don’t be embarrassed about reporting a scam. Because the scammers are cunning and clever there’s no shame in being deceived. By reporting it, you'll make it more difficult for them to deceive others. Get help or report a scam Reporting crime, including fraud, is important. If you don’t tell the authorities, how do they know it’s happened and how can they do anything about it? Remember that if you’re a victim of a scam or an attempted scam, however minor, there may be hundreds or thousands of others in a similar position. Your information may form part of one big jigsaw and be vital to completing the picture.

Residents’ Surgery Thank you to everyone that called into our residents’ surgery on Saturday 14th September, held at The Nook Corner Shop. We had a lovely breakfast to start the day and thank you to Sharon for her hospitality. We were there for a couple of hours, so we were able to observe some of the car movements around The Nook during breaks. The main issues we picked up were: vehicles failing to observe the ‘Keep Clear’ areas, buses stopping on Leicester Road, vehicles being in the wrong lanes and therefore blocking some lanes, and vehicles stopping on double yellow lines. We know there are still issues on Cropston Road with long queues that we are trying to address with the Highways Authority, but The Nook was generally flowing well, even on a busy Saturday morning. We know The Nook is still very busy at peak times, but this is not unusual for many of the rural villages in Charnwood. We will continue to monitor The Nook and look forward to receiving some data from the Highway Authority in due course on the waiting times on Cropston Road, which we will feed back to you in due course.
Charnwood’s 'Big Switch' Offer Residents in Charnwood are being offered the chance to sign up to the ‘Big Switch’. The Borough Council has launched Charnwood Big Switch, a collective switching scheme to help residents change energy suppliers with ease, enabling them to get a better energy deal. The scheme is delivered by the Council and iChoosr, an independent specialist provider in collective energy switching. Collective switching gives people the opportunity to group together and pay less for their energy. Residents can switch electric, gas or dual fuel and can choose to have paper bills or to manage their accounts online. iChoosr hold three auctions a year and energy suppliers compete to provide the lowest priced tariff in the auction. It is free for residents to register their interest and registrations for the first auction are now open. The first auction for Charnwood will take place on 8 October. For more information about Charnwood Big Switch and to register visit https://www.charnwood .gov.uk/charnwoodbigswitch

Covenant Employer Scheme (ERS) Gold Award is the highest badge of honour for organisations which have signed the Armed Forces Covenant and demonstrated outstanding support for those who serve or have served in the past. The award recognises employers who actively support the Armed Forces community in their workplace and encourage others to follow their lead. Both councils currently have the silver award and are the first local authorities in the East Midlands to now receive gold. Charnwood and Rushcliffe have made pledges under the Armed Forces Covenant to help support the Armed forces community including serving personnel, reservists, veterans and families to ensure that they do not face any disadvantage as a result of their service. The partnership was formed in 2017 and also involves Melton Borough Council. A ceremony will be held in London later this year when the Councils will formally receive the ERS Gold Award.
New Appointments at Charnwood Council Cllr Jane Hunt has been appointed to Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet as lead member for planning, inward investment and tourism strategy, following the resignation of Cllr Eric Vardy. Cllr Vardy, who is moving away from the area, said he had thoroughly enjoyed his time on the Council and serving the people of Syston West ward. A byelection for the ward has now been called for Thursday 3rd October. Cllr Roy Rollings, lead member for Transformation, has taken over responsibility for issues relating to environment strategy and carbon reduction. The Leader of the Council, Cllr Morgan has also appointed three new Council champions. Cllr Julian Howe will champion the Council’s commitment to plant thousands of trees over the next few years and Cllr Ted Parton is the Council’s new champion for loneliness, ensuring issues such as isolation and loneliness remain high on the Council agenda. Cllr Laurie Needham is the Council’s new champion for climate change.
Recycling simplified across Leicestershire District councils in Leicestershire have joined forces to make recycling easier than ever by providing a more consistent recycling service for Leicestershire residents. The majority of county residents are now able to recycle exactly the same materials in their recycling
wheelie bins wherever they live in the county. Six district councils have worked together to produce one simple list of what can and cannot be put into the recycling bin. It is hoped that not only will this offer better consistency for residents countywide, but that it will also encourage residents to recycle more things, more often. A complete list of items that can be recycled can be seen here: www.lesswaste.org.uk/ items-accepted-for-recycling-at-casepak/ Until recently, when recycling bins were emptied by crews in each council area, the contents were taken to several different recycling sites for sorting. Each recycling site had different rules and different processes which meant that items that could be recycled in some districts could not be r ecycled in others. That changed last year and now recycling collections from most districts - Blaby, Charnwood, Harborough, Hinckley & Bosworth, Melton and Oadby & Wigston - are now taken to a single materials recycling facility in Leicester which has enabled the different borough councils to team up for the first time. Up to date information on what the recycling is used for is also available at www.lesswaste.org.uk
Leader welcomes up to £25 million regeneration boost for Loughborough The leader of Charnwood Borough Council, Cllr Jonathan Morgan, has welcomed news that Loughborough is in line for up to £25 million of funding to regenerate the town. Cllr Jonathan Morgan says the announcement today by Local Government Secretary the Rt. Hon. Robert Jenrick is a massive opportunity for Loughborough. The Government has revealed that 100 places around the country will be invited to develop proposals for a new generation of multi-million pound Town Deals. It says communities, businesses and local leaders will join forces to draw up ambitious plans to transform their towns’ economic growth prospects with a focus on improved transport, broadband connectivity, skills and culture. This is a significant funding announcement and Charnwood Borough Council will work with residents, businesses, partners and other organisations to bring forward proposals which deliver major benefits for our communities. A total of 33 places in the Midlands Engine are among the 100 pioneers of new Town

Deals as part of the Government’s commitment to level up all regions by boosting productivity, skills and living standards. Local Government Secretary, the Rt. Hon. Robert Jenrick MP, said: “Ensuring that prosperity and opportunities are available to everyone in this country, not just those in London or our biggest cities, is at the heart of the mission of this government. We want to level-up our great towns, raising living standards and ensuring they can thrive with transformative investment in transport, technology, skills and culture. I will now work with local people from the 100 communities announced today to agree proposals to invest up to £25 million in each place”. Once approved, new Town Deals will improve connectivity, provide vital social and cultural infrastructure and boost growth – with communities having a say on how the money is spent. Decisions on funding any proposals will be made in due course.
Thai Massage Parlour Just to let you know that the Thai Massage Parlour has now opened. Deborah popped in to welcome the proprietors to the village and wish them luck with their business. Deborah reported that inside is very welcoming and relaxing. While she was there, Deborah spoke to a gentleman who was having a foot and leg massage. He was very happy to chat and explained to Deborah that he suffers from Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and has constant pains in his legs and feet. He suffers with symptoms such as feeling like hot needles are being pushed into his skin. He is on a cocktail of prescription painkillers which bring their own side effects, but he still suffers from pain. During the massage he explained to Deborah that massage had
helped to ensure the pains had gone, and he was able to relax and be pain-free for at least the hour he was relaxing in the chair. We know some residents have had concerns about the opening of the massage parlour but having been in there and having spoken to the gentleman suffering with MS, we hope residents feel better about the new shop and will help support all our local businesses.
Anstey Gala Both Paul and Deborah attended this year’s Gala. We were delighted it was such a nice day and that everyone had so much fun. Paul thoroughly enjoyed his coffee and a chocolate brownie, and was absolutely thrilled with his fig, date and rhubarb jam. Where else could you buy such a fabulous jam! He was also heartened to hear the work of the Anstey Local History Society, set up to remember and preserve the past in Anstey, from Brian Kibble himself. Brian is such an inspiration. See Brian’s website ansteyhistory .com for more details on this very worthy society group.
Gynsill Lane, Davidsons Development We promised we would provide a further update as to where we are with this development. As part of the planning permission for this site, the developers put in a variation to the legal agreement to remove all the affordable housing from the site and pass a commuted sum of £275,000 to Charnwood Borough Council to provide affordable housing elsewhere within the borough. Even though we fought hard against this, it was approved with the condition that the site would be completed by 19th August 2019 or the 30% of affordable

housing should be put back onto the site. We were concerned that the site would not be finished by that date and were pushing Charnwood’s legal team to understand the implications of the site not being finished by the set date. After many emails and a face to face meeting with Charnwood Planning Officers and the legal team, we finally have an understanding of what has happened with the affordable housing on this site. The condition that stated the 30% affordable housing would be put back on the site was challenged by the developers and due to temporary changes in the planning law at the time of the application, this was allowed to ensure that housing developments were not held up due to the housing shortage. Deborah gave a very detailed explanation to Anstey Parish Council at their last meeting and if you would like any further clarity, please do get in touch with her. Also, in connection to this site there was an approved planning application to improve the footpath from the site and to build a new footbridge over Rothley Brook. The footpaths have been completed but the new paths stop both sides of the brook just before the bridge, and therefore no work had been completed on the bridge. We can now report that work is well underway with this bridge and we are hoping that it will be all finished by the time you read this report or very soon afterwards. If you have any issues or concerns, we are here to help.

Renata is a Hungarian concert pianist based in London, having studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. She ďƒžrst performed for us in 2017 at the inauguration of the beautiful new piano at the Methodist Church - an evening of wonderful music by Chopin and Liszt. Quite simply Renata was breath-taking, with a staggering technique and depth of musical maturity. Everyone loved her and she immediately accepted an invitation to return last year and again wowed us with another spectacular performance. We are therefore extremely excited to be welcoming her back for what promises to be another outstanding performance. Renata has performed all over the world, winning many competitions and performing at the highest level. She has said how she feels very much at home in our church. Following her last recital, we now arrange the audience seating so that as many people as possible can see her play; we feel this makes for a more intimate and special performance. 50% of the tickets have already been sold without this being advertised, so please secure your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Community groups urged to contact local councillors about grant funding Community groups in Charnwood are being urged to contact their local councillor to help them access grant funding for projects. The member grants scheme is run by Charnwood Borough Council and enables each borough councillor to award up to ÂŁ1,000 to projects in their ward each year.
PARTY SEASON advice for pet owners
Give your pet somewhere to hide, that they can access at all times, eg. under furniture
Comfort your pet if it helps them relax, or leave them alone to hide, unless you think they may harm themselves
Never punish your pets when they are scared
Walk your dog during daylight and keep pets indoors after dark when fireworks are likely to go off
Close windows and curtains at nightfall and play music to help mask the sound of fireworks
Make sure your pet can’t escape if startled by a sudden noise
Cllr Jonathan Morgan, leader of the Council said: “The member grants scheme helps spread funding to projects right across Charnwood, in each ward. “We want to encourage groups who are making a positive contribution to their community to contact their local councillor about the grants.â€? The Forest Road Greenbelt Gardeners has been awarded a total of ÂŁ750 from three different councillors. The funding has been used towards carving a story telling seat from a dead standing oak tree in Forest Road. The seat has been created in memory of Loughborough in Bloom stalwart Harry Cook. Cllr Richard Bailey, who represents the Outwoods ward and awarded ÂŁ250 to the project said “The Forest Road Greenbelt Gardeners help to maintain a wonderful green space in my ward which I know is appreciated by many residents. “Harry Cook was well thought of in the local community and I was happy to support this project with part of my grant to create a lasting feature on the greenbelt in Harry’s memory. “The member grants scheme is a fantastic opportunity for councillors to find out more about the work community groups do in the local area and support them by awarding them with some funding.â€? Harry’s widow Pat said: “The story telling seat was always one of Harry’s dreams. I’m pleased we’ve been able to make it happen with the help of the member grants scheme. “I was so overwhelmed by the support of the local community, schools, local business’ and Charnwood Borough Council. A total of ÂŁ8,436 was raised through the Spacehive crowd funding platform in conjunction with the idverde community investment fund for the project.

In Praise of Grandparents! SUNDAY 6TH OCTOBER is ‘Grandparents Day’. Grandparents in the UK number about 17 million, or more than one in four of the adult population. Grandparents average out at 68 years of age, have four grandchildren who live 10 miles away, and who spend five hours per visit. Grandparents have multiple roles as their grandchildren grow up: playmates, teachers, confidants, spiritual guides, mentors, role models and nurturers, as well as pray-ers. They also can keep children’s milestones, family history and family events alive. Grandchildren will often discuss their personal concerns with a trusted grandparent. Grandparents are also important for the UK economy! Nine million of them looked after their grandchildren in 2017. On average they did so for 8 hours a week, 96% received no payment.

Charnwood Voices Autumn Concert – Light Fantastic! This concert promises something for everyone. Charnwood Voices have been busy rehearsing the wide and varied programme that will be on offer on Saturday 12th October in St Andrew's Church, Kegworth and are really looking forward to what should be a musical feast for you all to enjoy.
The Charnwood Gardener It Ain’t Over Yet
There is a distinct moment, sometime in mid-September, when the realisation hits that autumn is almost upon us. Perhaps it’s the quality of the light: the bright white of summer cooling to a subdued golden hue. Or maybe it’s the sudden desire to dig out the chunkier jumpers from the back of the wardrobe. Or the startling and perverse sight of Christmas tat already in the shops. Depending on your disposition, these signs of the season may be cause for melancholy (where did the summer go?) or celebration (bonfires and muddy walks!), but if you’re a gardener you’ll know that the fun is far from over.
Come along to revel in a mix of sacred and secular music from Plainsong to Cole Porter, Rheinberger to Over the Rainbow and the beautiful Lux Aeterna by Morten Lauridsen. The choir will be conducted by Musical Director, Nicholas Scott-Burt. You are promised a night of 'harmonic luminescence' so don't hesitate – get your tickets NOW. Tickets will be available on the door but we recommend you buy them early from choir members or request them via an email to tickets@charnwoodvoices.org.uk. The price of £10 includes a glass of wine or fruit juice and if you have any U16s in the family they will be welcome for free!
Our bankrupt young THE NUMBER of young people who go bankrupt has soared, increasing tenfold in just three years. People from ‘Generation Z’ (aged 18 to 25) now make up one in 15 of all personal insolvencies. Back in 2016 only one in 100 insolvencies involved a young person. As one accountant explained: “In this climate of low interest rates and relatively easy access to credit, young people without financial experience may be more susceptible to the temptations of easy money.” The rise of the gig economy and zero-hours contracts have also played a big role, for without a regular income, young people find it much more difficult to budget.

Kale is hardy enough to over-winter
Autumn is a magical window in which to plot, plan and play – the garden becomes the alchemist’s crucible from which the old becomes the new. Here’s some inspiration for this enchanting time of year: • It’s an ideal time to lift and divide herbaceous plants. Is that clump of globe thistles (Echinops) getting too big for its boots? Turn one plant into three and add some visually-pleasing repetition to the border. • Don’t let the veg patch sit there doing nothing all winter. The soil is still warm and hardy veg like kale, chard and purple-sprouting broccoli will get going in no time. Sow direct and fill the space! • As you start to cut back in the borders, think about winter structure. Could you leave some of the sturdier growth until spring? Fennel, teasel, Phlomis, Verbena – the seed heads of these all look beautiful touched with winter frost and stop the garden being entirely flat for four months of the year. OCTOBER TIP: With the ground nice and moist, now’s a good time to re-edge the borders. Using a decent half-moon edging spade, carefully cut tidy lines (or curves) into the lawn and lift (from the border side) with a fork. Done well it transforms the appearance of the garden.

Friends of the Charnwood Forest The first meeting of the Friends this season took place on Thursday 26th September at the Woodhouse Eaves village hall, where we were to have heard a talk on ‘Visitors to Charnwood forest’ by David Robinson. Unfortunately this talk had to be postponed for medical reasons, so Marilyn Palmer gave a talk on ‘The Making of the Industrial Landscape in Leicestershire’. ‘Landscape’ is perhaps best connected with Leicestershire through the work of W G Hoskins, late professor of local history at Leicester University. What people may not realise is that he came to dislike Leicestershire, and particularly its industrial landscape, and he retreated to Devon as soon as he was able. So what were the industries that contributed to this landscape? The talk covered the rise, and in some cases the fall, of these industries, from knitting and the boot and shoe industry to iron founding and engineering, and the bricks which made St Pancras station. Weaving was, of course, a very ancient occupation. At first sheep were shorn, the wool either combed or carded, then spun and knitted, all by hand. The first knitting machines may well have orginated in Nottinghamshire, and certainly by the mid
18th century the highest concentrations were in the Nottingham, Leicester and Derby shires. These evolved into power-driven machines which by the 1870’s formed the basis for a factory culture. Here the talk touched on the subject of the role of women in the growth of this industry. Meanwhile boots and shoes were being manufactured chiefly in Northamptonshire, but the industry spread north in the 1860’s, examples being the Wheatsheaf Works and the British United Shoe Machinery Co, both in Leicester city. Charles Bennion, the CEO of British United, was responsible for the presentation of Bradgate Park to the people of Leicester and its shire. Iron works arose at this time; Gimson’s works being a very good example. Its products may still be viewed at the Abbey Pumping station, which originally was designed to pump sewage to Beaumont Leys but is now a museum. To make things involves a source of energy, anything from man or horse power to the introduction of steam, the product of heating water using a coal fire. The next topic in the talk was, logically, about the coal industry. In the north western part of the county the coal measures have a fairly thin overburden and are easily mined. Unfortunately, between
Dr D McNeil
them and their city lies the Charnwood Forest, which makes transport both difficult and expensive. This led on to transport, which is necessary for industrial growth in any case – the bigger the market, the more prosperous the industry. The coming of the canalisation of the river Soar between the Trent and Leicester allowed cheap coal from Derbyshire to flood into Leicester, depriving the Leicestershire coalfield of its market. Its first attempt at retrieving the situation was the Charnwood Forest canal – a disaster in the making. Then came the Leicester and Swannington Railway, well known as the Stephenson line that had to create both the steam whistle and the Glenfield tunnel. The age of steam has come to an end. Factories which once produced enough to give Leicester the title of the richest city in Europe are now blocks of flats, either by conversion or destruction. Smoke no longer hangs over the city. Would Hoskins have approved? We shall never know... The next meeting of the Friends will be at the same venue on 14th October when Martyn Speight will give a talk on ‘The Storey of the Charnwood Water Supply over the last 150 years’.

JOHN BULL Fifty years ago (1969) as I was preparing for Anstey’s Local History Exhibition, Anstey’s George Salisbury answered our appeal for photographs and sent me the 1909 picture of the arrival of John Bull and shortly afterwards Josie Bryan put forward the picture of John Bull at it’s garage in Church Lane. I followed this up by contacting the records office at Wigston and discovered the notes of Anstey’s Primary School headmistress Grace Bickley with memories of it’s arrival, which in turn provided the copy for some of the section on public transport in the publcation of the 1970 book “from a narrow track. Miss Bickley was my headmistress in 1940 when I was five years old. A further 29 years on and by chance encounter I was told that “John Bull had been found and was being restored by Greg Duffin of Stonehurst Farm in Mountsorrel. It transpires that “John Bull was only in the village for two years when Johnny Hutton having taken over the business from Maurice Reeson sold the double decker to Boyers of Rothley. This was subsequently rebodied as a single decker as per the photograph loaned by Greg. It is not known what happened to the single decker and I suppose it is possible that it was commandeered by the War Office in 1914-18 for taking the troops to the front although I guess the chassis and engine being a German Durkop would not have made it very popular!. However, all trace of it was lost.

The original body of “John Bull was placed in 1911 in the garden of the Boyer family to act as greenhouse and remarkably in 1984, some 73 years later, Greg discovered it’s existance, still with it’s original glass, bodywork and signage in sound condition and subsequently did a deal with the widow Mrs. Boyer. From there on the restoration was in the hands of Greg and his son Tom. Their first task was to find a chassis of the same age and mechanical specification as the original Durkop and after much searching found one in 1989, a 1905 British Commer, in a Wellingborough scrapyard. This was followed by discovering a gearbox of the same vintage in an old windmill near Peterborough in 1991.

Final work was carried out and in 2003 a re-enactment run was organised with Greg driving the chain driven vehicle on solid tyres accompanied by Anstey passengers in period costume for the journey from Leicester’s High Cross terminus via the A50 Groby Road and the Gynsill Lane to Anstey and then onto it’s destination at the Bradgate Hotel in Newtown Linford. Very sadly we have since lost Greg but his family have carried on his tradition not only with John Bull but numerous other forms of transport as witnessed in the display areas. His legacy lives on. On September 4th, at Stonehurst farm, Jane Cole, leader of the Anstey Local History Society and I attended a filming session that took place for the television series on Great British Car Journeys with the presenters Christopher Timothy and Peter Davison of “all creatures great and small fame and it is understood it will appear on channel 4 late October. The 1905 vintage vehicle came to the village in 1909 and has now been restored by Greg Duffin at his motor museum in Stonehurst Family Farm, Mountsorrel and is seen here at the controls accompanied 11 year old Matthew Kibble in period costume

NOT LONG Three Games, Three LEFT FOR Wins for Anstey Rugby BARGAIN WILL WRITING With the Campaign ending next month, the ‘phone lines at Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland are buzzing, with hundreds of older people wanting to make sure that they do not miss out on the annual Will Writing Promotion organised by the Charity. Twenty-seven offices of local solicitors have kindly agreed to reduce their Will Writing charge to just £35 + VAT for a single uncomplicated Will, but the offer runs only until the end of October. This price represents a saving of more than £100 in most cases. Commenting, the Business Development Manager of the local Age UK, Peter Ralphs, said: “We are delighted that so many people have responded to the promotion. Many older people have never been to a solicitor before, with some feeling intimidated at the prospect. The special offer has acted as an incentive and given many people the confidence they have needed to put their affairs in order – ensuring that those who will benefit from their estate are the people they most care for. Some have even been kind enough to include much-needed legacies or given donations to our charity, though there is no pressure so to do.” Anyone wishing to take advantage of the Will Writing Promotion should contact Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland to find out the names of the Solicitors participating in the scheme in their local area on 0116 2992233.
Saturday 31st August saw the opening of Anstey RFC’s 40th season with a resounding win against Mellish at our Link Road home. With four players making their Anstey debut it was a good test to see if all our pre season training had paid off. Mellish started the match putting pressure on Anstey’s defence which held out for a good while, but Mellish succeeded in opening the scoring with an early converted try. The reply from our team was swift with two first half converted tries bringing the score to 14-7 at half time. The second half saw everything come together with Anstey finishing 47-7 winners. 7th September it was the turn of Ashfield to visit our village for our final friendly game before the league season started. Another great result saw Anstey run out 66-5 winners. A week later came our big first test with a league game away at Oakham. As their first team was also at home playing a first home game the club hosted a lunch for invited VIPs such as Peter Wheeler, RFU President and Barbara Crellin, Leicestershire Rugby Union President plus Kelvin Mahoney and myself representing Anstey RFC. We even had a write up in their official programme! Onto our league game - Oakham lined up with a full team including four large fit looking Fijians and a host of replacements. Anstey came with a full side and two replacements. Anstey soon opened the scoring with a converted try with Oakham responding scoring two tries soon after putting them into the lead.
Nothing like this worried your Anstey side who went into the lead by half time 27-31 and after dominating most of the second half ran out 58-33 winners. A great day for Anstey Rugby Club All our fixtures can be found on our website at www.pitchhero.com/clubs/anstey Or on our club noticeboard in The Coach & Horses (carpark end). Training is every Wednesday evening under floodlights at out Link Road ground. Don’t forget this date: Saturday 13th June 2020 is when we will celebrate 40 years with a dinner, presentations, guest speakers and live music at a venue in Leicester. More details soon, but please spread the word to everyone who has been involved with the club since 1980. We want You All there to join the celebrations. Anstey RFC are always ready to welcome new players, experienced or not. As well as playing, the social life that goes with Rugby Union is well known. As a bonus, playing the game will help get you fit. Training takes place on Wednesday evenings at our Link Road ground. Matches are on Saturdays kicking off at 3pm. If you would like to support the club contact any committee member for details. Details for all the club officials are on the Anstey RFC noticeboard inside our clubhouse at The Coach and Horses. Thurcaston & Cropston Local History Society Julie Attard is an old friend of the Society and in September she returned with a talk entitled “What’s in a name? Exploring the history of Charnwood Forest through its place-names.” It was based on research carried out through the Victoria County History’s “Charnwood Roots” project, which Julie managed. English place-names have absorbed a mixture of elements from the languages of successive waves of invaders. Different languages are often combined; for example, the first part of “Charnwood” is from the Celtic word for a cairn, while “wood” comes from Old English. Sometimes it is clear that new arrivals did not understand the meaning of the existing name – a classic example being Breedon on the Hill, which means “Hill Hill on the Hill” in various languages! Analysing place-names can tell us about patterns of settlement and the way the inhabitants saw the landscape. “Thurcaston” is derived from a Viking forename Thorketil, combined with the Old English tun, meaning a settlement. This suggests a period when a new Viking lord took charge of an existing Saxon village. “Cropston” follows the same pattern, although it is not clear whether the forename in question is the Saxon Cropp or the Viking Kropp. Some elements of Anglo-Saxon names could be very specific, e.g. “Stocking Close”, which means an enclosure cleared of tree stumps, or “Swithland”, which means land cleared by burning. After 1066 the Normans gave French names to a few local places, such as Beaumanor and Grace Dieu. There are more than 2000 surviving medieval documents that relate to Charnwood and they are a rich source of old place-names. Julie showed us several examples, including a “perambulation” of an estate boundary from about 1300, in which roughly half of the names that appear can still be identified on a modern OS map. In the 18th and 19th centuries much of the countryside was enclosed and the associated maps and enclosure awards tell us the names of the old open fields and furlongs. Thurcaston and Cropston each had a Bybrook Field, which is straightforward to understand. It is less apparent that the name of Alitha Field in Thurcaston came from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “detached”. Subsequent documents record the name as “Hallythawe”, “Hollythorn” and “Albethough”, which shows how place-names can evolve as people try to make sense of them in their own ways. The Key to English Place-Names is a good resource: http://kepn.nottingham.ac.uk Our next event will be at 7.30pm on Tuesday 15th October, when Anne Horton will tell us about the Danvers family of Swithland Hall. Please join us at the Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church. Visitors: £3. www.thurcastoncropstonhistory.org.uk
FILM PRESENTATIONS
Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council We had forgotten how funny Laurel and Hardy were, before we watched that short film in September. Then “Stan and Ollie” gave brilliant performances in the charming true story of the two entertainment greats. “All is True” will be shown on October 18th and lasts 101 minutes. Our film in October is a relaxed and sweet natured but poignant drama. Written by Ben Elton, it stars Sir Kenneth Branagh, Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen. In 1613, William Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is burnt down so he returns to his struggling family whom he has neglected in Stratford-on-Avon. “Mary Queen of Scots” will be shown on November 15th and lasts 124minutes. This British epic historical drama stars the brilliant Saoirse Roman. At sixteen years of age, Mary became Queen of France but catastrophically was a widow by 18 years old. She returned to her beloved Scotland but..... Mary’s cousin Elizabeth was Queen of England. The cousins were rivals in power and love! Would Mary’s plot against Elizabeth succeed? Will Elizabeth’s court follow a path of civil war? “Bohemian Rhapsody” will be shown on December 13th. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Film tickets will cost the usual £5 which will include refreshments and a lucky prize draw during the interval. Advanced tickets may be purchased via the parish office –0116 236 7626 or at the door.

THE MONDAY CLUB CROPSTON AND THURCASTON
CROPSTON EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH The Magic of the Ballroom Mrs Joyce Godfrey kept us enthralled with her description of the joys and trials of deciding at a young age that she wanted to learn all about ballroom dancing. She told us how she would sometimes go to the local cinema on a Saturday morning with her friends, provided she could find enough returnable deposit bottles to earn the thruppence (three old pennies) needed for entry. The usherette would be quite fierce and order them about, waving her little torch, but then it went dark and the film would begin. Mrs Godfrey evoked the glamorous scene that would appear, with ladies in beautiful gowns dancing gracefully with elegant gentlemen in evening suits, and Ginger Rogers standing at one side of the room with Fred Astaire at the other. She had already had some piano lessons, but now she desperately wanted to learn to dance.

Somehow her mother found a dance teacher, and the half-a-crown fee for the lessons in the back room of a pub; Joyce had to walk over a mile to get there after school. The first lesson went well, but she was very late home as she kept practising what she had learnt on the way back! The teacher, Mavis, started a Saturday group but they were all girls. Once a boy turned up and she partnered Joyce with him, and decided they could try out for competitions, so they learnt different styles of dance. She remembers going on the bus to the Palais in Nottingham, and showed us the lovely dress her mother had bought, along with pretty shoes, gloves and a flower for her hair. Joyce was 13 and very nervous. The competitors wore a number on their back, and had to demonstrate the Waltz, Quickstep, Foxtrot and Tango. The first three went well but her partner Brian froze at the last one, and they shuffled about the floor miserably until the music stopped and they could leave. She cried all the way home. When she was 17, she would go to the Palais by bus on a Saturday night, having endured the curling irons. She and her friends would wait until they got there to put on a tiny amount of lipstick, knowing that their Dads would not have let them out wearing make-up! Dances would begin with all the girls on one side of the room, and all the boys on the other. Mrs Godfrey read an appropriate poem by Joyce Grenfell, which illustrated the teenagers’ thoughts very well. She decided that she wanted to become a dance teacher, and Mavis introduced
her to her own tutor at Long Eaton; he was a champion dancer. He decided to take Joyce on, but was very strict, and insisted that she must never be late. In addition to doing her daytime job, she began training with him every evening plus Saturdays and Sundays. It was all theory. She had a good memory, and qualified in her exam, then became a student teacher. One day seven Teddy boys came in off the street. They looked her up and down (she was 22 by then), but before they could cause any problems she took control and spoke to them sharply, in the way the cinema usherette had done in the past. Within half an hour she had taught them the waltz well enough for them to pass their Bronze medal! Not all pupils were so gifted, however. Once two brothers came in, and whilst one managed to learn something his brother had no idea which foot was Left or Right; she tried to help him by tying different coloured bows to his shoes, but that didn’t work either as he seemed to be colour blind as well! Mrs Godfrey pictured the scene for us, a young girl at her first dance more than a century ago, accompanied by her father. She is wearing a lovely gown, and the orchestra is playing “The Blue Danube on the ballroom balcony. A soldier approaches her, very smart in his red coat and black trousers, and requests a dance with her, then she smiles and allows him to write his name on her dance card, which soon fills up. Joyce contrasted this picture with the modern day custom, whereby the male accosts the female of the species with “Are yer having this dance or what?! Mrs Godfrey had obviously enjoyed her long career, and finished with a humorous poem, before answering questions from the audience. The afternoon concluded with a sale of the items brought by members for the Harvest Festival, and tea and cakes. *** Meetings start at 2.15pm on the second Monday of each month. On 14th October we shall learn about the huge variety of tea now available. Bookings will also be taken for our Christmas meal, which is open to members and their families / friends. On 11th November we hope to hear advice about retirement. Please check local posters for details. Visitors and new members are always welcome.
