Quite a lot to catch up on, so I'll keep things as brief as possible! Thursday 26th July - As you all know, I was away on holiday for the crunch match. Unfortunately, we lost 7-1. What didn't help is that we 'defaulted' two boards. All we can put this down to is that we had arranged for a lift to be given for one of our players and it didn't happen. Let's leave it there. We played only 2 of the 4 boards required. On the plus side, John Whitmore won another game for the club, well done John.

Thursday 9th August - We had another 'Club night' where we all met up and talked again about a couple of 'book' openings to establish a foothold in the game and then we played a couple of friendlies.

Thursday 16th August - This was match night, again in the Harrod Cup and this was the 4th Round. We played Market Harborough at home and we were also joined by a couple of new faces. Maurice had emailed me to say he hadn't played for years, he wanted to play some games and he did very well against one or two of our members. We were also joined by Harry Robinson who used to be a regular on Saturday mornings but is now coached by me privately. He played a few games and again, he did very well.

On to the match and we achieved a drawn match this time - an excellent result. Mick Sandham beat the opponent's captain with both colours on board 1, I beat a promising young teenage player with both colours on board 2. Unfortunately, the reverse happened on boards 3 and 4. Mick Squire was beaten with both colours on board 3 and John Derry - making his first appearance for the team - lost with both colours on board 4.

We had a nice surprise too, a local fellow called John Robinson - an excellent player and well known in the County - said that he would play a 'simul' against us one club night when we are free. This means that he will play against all of us that turn up on the night and we will play against him, all at the same time. It should be an excellent experience!

Community Response Plan The Parish Council are keen to provide a Community Response Plan. Emergencies happen and we have been aware of such incidents local at Birstall and Hinckley Road. In these situation the emergency services will have to priorities those in greatest need, especially where life is in danger. There may be times when our community is affected by an emergency but lives are not in immediate danger. Being able to help ourselves and those around us will assist the emergency responders and reduce the impact on our community. Working in partnership with the Resilience Partnership Team the Parish Council want to set up a ‘Community Response Team. Within Anstey we are keen to hear from individuals and groups who would like to contribute to a community plan we cannot do this without you. We will be looking to hold a public meeting if enough interest is shown in putting a plan together.

Over 200 signatures from residents of the village have been collected, there appears to be a desire within the village for a Community Speed watch scheme. In order to get this scheme up and running there needs to be a group of between 6 and 16 people volunteers who want to actively take part and take the scheme forward. Currently there are not enough volunteers to run a group. A second meeting is organised for Tuesday 11th September 2018 starting at 7pm at the Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road. If you are able to attend and sign up to become part of the formal action group this is your opportunity to do so.

THE MONDAY CLUB CROPSTON AND THURCASTON

A holiday in Egypt - ancient land of the Pharaohs Mrs Anne Halsey said she had been to Egypt several times, and gave us some background information. She brought with her an authentic galabeya (long tunic) as worn by many men and women. Then we were treated to slides of the places where she and her friend Val had gone some years ago, travelling by train and on a boat. It was September and quite warm. They visited the famous pyramids. Anne pointed out that on one of them, although the entire building had been covered with limestone reflect the light for miles around, only a small portion remains at the top. Over the centuries since the pyramids were built, stone had been taken away for people’s houses. Huge ramps of beaten earth were constructed, where workers hauled the enormous blocks higher and higher. Inside the pyramids are many chambers, including secret rooms and booby traps. The skill of the builders so long ago is difficult to match, even with our modern technology. Most tourist attractions swarm with persistent vendors, offering a variety of souvenirs. Despite her previous warnings to her friend Val, the latter was soon targeted and almost made to buy something, until Anne intervened. Another amazing construction is the Sphinx, which Mrs Halsey always thinks of as a woman, although nobody is sure what it represents. It is carved out of one gigantic block of stone, and gazes into the distance. They went into Cairo with a guide. There is little greenery but they did find a park. The buildings are a mix of old and new, and made of stone or concrete. If people want a house they buy a shell and then add everything, even doors and windows! As families grow, they simply add a storey on top. They used bamboo scaffolding. When they came back to their hotel a wedding was taking place, with lots of guests making a terrific noise. It is essential for a man to have sons, because women are not allowed to inherit. Later they went to Lake Nasser by overnight express train. They were kept awake by cupboard doors banging because of broken latches. The bed was spartan and uncomfortable, but the aeroplane-style meal they were served was nice. At the lake they got onto a boat for an eight-day trip. The stewards were “lovely”, and looked after them. These men spend nine months solid on the boat, sending money home to their families, have a break, and then sign on again. She photographed some of the

6

imaginative and decorative designs created by the crew out of fresh towels, such as a swan or a crocodile, and the Staff of Life which is the symbol of Egypt, and was shown how to do it, but it was not easy. When they reached the island of Philae they were assigned armed and mounted guards, who spent a lot of time sleeping or smoking, and when one of them helped her walk over an uneven area he expected a gratuity. The people who deal with tourists demand “baksheesh” for everything, either money or in some cases school supplies like pens and pencils. On Philae, all the old buildings had to be moved to save them for posterity, when the dam was built. Mrs Halsey realised that there was a totally different tranquil atmosphere inside the temple, even though it stood open to the elements on all sides …. Until fairly recently the Nile would flood regularly, enabling the people to grow and harvest crops several times a year, but sometimes causing enormous devastation. By 1971 the upper Aswan Dam was constructed to regulate the amount of water coming down and prevent flooding, and to generate electricity. However, there are severe drawbacks to interfering with Nature. The once-fertile soil becomes dry and starved of nutrients, and the old social structure collapses. Villagers move into the towns and struggle to get any kind of living, surrounded by resentful townspeople. The local farmers left have only small plots on which to grow food for their family, maybe half an acre, and don’t use machinery. They all help each other, and harvesting is done by hand with the aid of the traditional bullock, as it has been for centuries. She and her friend were offered a trip to Nubia, about which they knew little. They were taken by power boat up the Nile. Bartering is the custom, and she said she enjoys it. One of her slides showed a loom set up with a half-woven piece of cloth in it. Apparently the owner was a Christian who had gone to Cairo for Sunday worship, leaving his stall under the care of his neighbour! Whilst in Nubia they were invited to look inside a house, and given a drink of tea. Cooking was done on a small ring, using Calor gas. There was a traditional bread oven, used every day. The best glassware was displayed in a food safe. The guest bedroom was just a floor, with some blankets for guests, but the main bedroom contained a four poster bed! During their visit she and Val saw no local women; tourist parties are of both sexes, and the women must not be seen by strange men. They visited a school and found the children (boys and girls) had no books or pens, etc., and learnt everything by rote. They had been trained to sing some children’s songs in English,

but she doubted that they understood the meaning. The local ladies make galabeyas for sale, and some of the proceeds help the school. The temple of Abu Simbel was moved wholesale, literally block by block, all numbered so that they could be put back together on the new site, which had to be enormous. Mrs Halsey showed a slide where people are looking up at the wall, giving us some idea of the scale. The temple is now specially insulated, including being made earthquake-proof. Later on, Anne and her friend stayed in a hotel on an island. They got to it using a boat with a sail, a felucca, which is a very efficient craft. Going down the Nile you are helped by the current; and going upstream a convenient wind blows you to your destination. Young boys swam out to them asking for baksheesh (despite the fact that there are crocodiles in the water), but the police confiscated the money soon afterwards. On the way to Luxor, she saw two camels in the back of a pick-up truck, going to market. They are hobbled to prevent escape. In the famous Valley of the Kings, there is an ancient alabaster mine which is now almost exhausted, but she managed to buy a few pieces. Alabaster looks like marble, and can be carved; and will remain cold even in hot temperatures. In parts of the temple at Luxor, the decorations done in vibrant red and yellow along the building can still be seen centuries after they were painted, amazing. There is a ceremonial pathway between Luxor and Karnak, flanked on both sides by statues so worn away that it is hard to say if they are men or animals. Modern roads cut across it in places, but there are plans to restore it. On the last night on their boat they were entertained by a young, pretty girl who danced for them in scanty clothing -- this would be considered quite shocking, and she would be frowned upon in polite society. There was also a marvellous male juggler, who juggled and whirled round at the same time. The talk ended with a chance for everyone to ask questions and look at the souvenirs Mrs Halsey had brought, such as lovely Egyptian jewellery including colourful and intricate beadwork. *** Monday Club meetings start at 2.15pm on the second Monday of each month. New members and visitors are very welcome to future meetings (please see local posters for details). At the next meeting on 10th September we shall celebrate our bring-andbuy Harvest Festival, with a demonstration of Indian head massage by one of our members.

Anstey WI

FILM PRESENTATIONS

In July Anstey WI held a garden party which was very successful both as a social evening and as a fundraiser. It helped, of course, that the weather was so good. June Roe has hosted what had become an annual event for many years now, and decided that this would be the last time, so she was heartily thanked.

Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council "Finding your Feet" will be shown on September 14th and last 111 minutes.

In August we heard Paul Taberner, a former scenes of crime officer, talk about “Behind the Crime Scenes.” How many speakers would assist the programme secretary in preparing the refreshments for the evening? Paul did, and had such an engaging manner that however many times he said, “Anyway, long story short….” it never grated. He dispelled the myth arising from numerous TV series, that a quick glance at the scene is sufficient to solve the case. Forensic work is in fact painstaking and often boring, unlike his talk. His humerous anecdotes about the daft things criminals do kept us amused while we learned much about how investigations are conducted.

NEW ARCHAEOLOGICAL DISCOVERIES IN BRADGATE PARK - TALK by RICHARD THOMAS Monday 17th September 2018 - Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall at 7.30pm Frequent visitors to Bradgate Park may well have observed, over the past four years, fieldschools excavating various sites. These range from Stone Age remains around Little Matlock, to the Deer Keeper’s House, various sites within and around Bradgate House and in this last year the possible stable block. These excavations have been organised by the School of Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Leicester. In this talk, Richard Thomas, one of the project co-directors, will summarise what has been learnt so far, and present the results of this year’s excavations which focussed on finding the stable block to the south of Bradgate House, just over the bridge. Richard Thomas is a reader in Archaeology at Leicester University where he has been based for 15 years. He is co-director of the Bradgate Park Fieldschool so who better to explain what we can find of interest and to answer all your questions. Visitors welcome £3 on the door. Future Events for your diary. Monday 22nd October. “What’s in a name?” investigating place names in Charnwood Forest. A talk by Julie Attard. Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall 7.30pm. Many rural cinemas, like us, have booked this warm British comedy, starring Imelda Staunton and Joanna Lumley. A middle-class snob, called Sandra, discovers that her husband is having an affair. She has to move to live with her sister who is her exact opposite and lives on a council estate. A seniors dance class provides new hope for Sandra who meets many colourful characters. This film is hilarious and yet endearing. "The Post" will be shown on October 5th and lasts 116 minutes. Steven Speilberg's 1970's political thriller is a true story about the famous newspaper. "The Washington Post" drama stars Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. This film depicts not only gender inequality but also how women can become empowered in their work. Katharine Graham was the first female publisher of a major American newspaper. She risked her family business and criminal prosecution regarding government papers about the Vietnam War. "The Post" won six Golden Globe Award Nominations and many accolades. Thurcaston and Cropston Parish Council will be showing these films at Thurcaston Memorial Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Film tickets will cost the usual £5 which will includes refreshments and a lucky prize draw during the interval. Advanced tickets may be purchased via the parish office –0116 236 7626 or at the door.

Bradgate Park Calendar Official Launch Evening

Anstey Summer Gala!

The Bradgate Park Calendar had its official launch night at the Stamford Arms, Groby, Leicester on 8th August, and was received with much anticipation from all the members of The Bradgate Rotary Club and Peter Tyldesley (Director of Bradgate Park and Trust). The calendar, now in its third year, has raised over £7000 for the Bradgate Park Trust, a charity which relies on voluntary support and donations as well as projects such as this one to help run and maintain Bradgate Park. Bradgate Rotary Club have organised this wonderful project to provide a beautiful product to sell within the Bradgate Park shop, and in their online store, which along with the sponsorship of local companies will provide much needed income for the Trust. The calendar was commissioned by Bradgate Rotary Club, who support and help many local charities and community events, and was designed by Summer Designs a newly set up freelance Graphic designer who is passionate for work within the local community. The Rotary Club wish to give special thanks to the Leicester Forest Photographic Society who provided the photos for the calendar, they welcome anyone interested in their work to visit their Annual Summer Exhibition, or to one of their open evenings, more information at www.lfps.org.uk. Also a big thank you to Groby Allotment Society who provided the calendar with recipes of the month, all inspired by the locally grown produce fresh from the allotments. Copies of the calendar can be purchased from the Bradgate Park Shop and their online store (www.bradgatepark.org/shop) shortly and would make excellent gifts. David Snartt Reports... Borough Councillor for Forest Bradgate

Planning Application Update Further to the details I reported in last month’s magazine about the planning application to develop 50 dwellings on land adjacent to Maplewell Road, Woodhouse Eaves. I am hopeful the update I received from officers at Charnwood Borough Council has already been communicated to many residents, especially the ones who took time to object to this proposal. I agreed that the decision being made by officers to refuse planning permission could be dealt with under delegated powers by officers, therefore, there was no need for this application to be determined by a Plans Committee, noting this decision supports local opposition to the proposal. I thought it would be of interest to give the details from officers, especially as it includes information about the new National Planning Policy Framework, which in my view, was key to the refusal decision, along with other appropriate reasons which were outlined in many of the objections from local residents The statement reads: Following the publication of the Government’s new National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) on the 24th July 2018 an initial assessment has been undertaken of the new approach to the five year housing land supply calculation and the new housing delivery test. This assessment indicates that the Borough has 5.93 years supply of deliverable housing sites. This means that the Borough Council is in a better position to resist development which is contrary to the adopted Core Strategy. Policy CS1 of the Core Strategy refers to the Development Strategy for the Borough and defines Woodhouse Eaves as an “Other Settlement “, where the need for new development will be met by small-scale opportunities within defined limits to development. The applicants have been advised that the scale and location of their proposal is contrary to Policy CS1 and that planning permission will be

refused. It has been agreed with Ward Councillor, David Snartt, that because this decision supports local opposition to the proposal, it can be issued by officers and does not need to be reported to the Council’s Plans Committee. In addition to the objection to the principle of the development, officers are considering all the evidence to establish whether there are other matters which should be included in the reasons for refusal. Officers would emphasise that any additional reasons must be supported by evidence which would stand up to scrutiny by expert professionals and the Planning Inspectorate, if the case were to proceed to an appeal. The decision will be issued later this month (August). Everyone who commented in writing will be notified when the application is issued. May I take this opportunity to thank all residents who sent their observations and objections to Charnwood Borough Council and the Parish Council for arranging Public Meetings. I believe the objections were well thought out and explained in planning terms about the detrimental effect this proposal would have on the community and the wider Charnwood Forest area. As the statement from officers above refers this decision to refuse could be appealed by the applicants to the Planning Inspectorate, I will keep you informed on any future developments that come forward with this application.

Model of Local Government in Leicestershire I have been asked several times about what is happening with changing the structure for local government in Leicestershire. At the moment there is a two tier structure Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council both delivering different services to the residents of the Borough.

Following a Cabinet report by Leicestershire County Council, the Borough and District Council Leaders issued a joint statement which included the following: We have a number of reservations as to the model proposed by the County Council, not least the rushed timetable and being too remote for local residents. However, we recognise that it may be premature to rule it out at this early stage. Accordingly, the Council Leaders have pledged to work together to find the right solution for the residents of Leicestershire and look forward to engaging with other elected partners, stakeholders and residents to deliver the best in local government for Leicestershire and the East Midlands region. I am very keen to make sure local residents are kept informed as this develops. Therefore, I did ask a question when this item came before the Cabinet at Charnwood Borough Council. In essence, my question was making sure residents of the Borough are at the forefront of any decisions made to change the structure, especially on how services will be delivered. I am pleased to say the Cabinet acknowledged in particular the importance of keeping all Councillors up to date on progress with this item, through comprehensive scrutiny of any proposals that come forward and that residents of the Borough and ‘Customer First’ would always be a priority. If residents need to see the full detail about this very important item, please go to the Charnwood Borough Council website, Cabinet meeting 16th August 2018. I will keep you informed when more information becomes available. You may also like to let me know your initial thoughts on structure changes.

Council Support as Benefits System Changes The Department of Work and Pensions is expanding Universal Credit and since July it will affect more people of working age in the Borough of Charnwood. Support is available for Charnwood residents who may be affected by the wider rollout of this system. Universal Credit is a major change for residents who receive one of the six benefits it is

replacing. Therefore, Charnwood Borough Council has taken steps to put support and advice in place for customers. This is a new benefit for working age people who are on a low income or out of work, replacing a number of existing benefits and tax credits: housing benefit, income-based jobseeker’s allowance, income-based employment and support allowance, income support, working tax credit, child tax credit. Universal Credit does not affect people over the pension credit age, also it does not cover council tax support which is still administered by the Council. Speeding Vehicles Roecliffe Road After attending the latest Newtown Linford Parish Council meeting, information was given about another vehicle accident at the Roecliffe Road crossroads. I have again corresponded with the Leicestershire Police Road Safety Unit about the deployment of the speed camera van. I understand from a resident who attended the meeting some speed checks have already taken place but not at peak times. Therefore, I have asked that due to the continuing accidents at the crossroads the speed camera van visits this location especially early mornings and late afternoons. I will continue to press for this to happen and will keep you informed about this highway safety issue.

Newtown Linford Scarecrow Weekend I am pleased that the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) has taken over the running of the very successful Scarecrow Weekend. In my view, over the years this has always been a great event, just seeing so many people walking through the village admiring the excellent scarecrows. This year the festival will take place on the 29th and 30th September, the deadline for scarecrow entries is before 15th September. Entry forms are available from the Post Office tea rooms, All Saints Church and the Scarecrow Festival Facebook page. I am told any non-residents of the village are welcome to use the land near Bradgate Park tea rooms to erect their own scarecrow, I believe the overall winner will receive a donation to the Charity of their choice. The usual activities will be on offer, refreshments at the Village Hall, Morris dancers, maypole dancing, face painting, bouncy castle and traditional stalls and games, not forgetting the raffle with excellent prizes. I look forward to the prize giving on the Sunday at 4.00pm at the Village Hall. Anyone needing further information can e-mail forestfitstudio@gmail.com.

New Look Website A new look website has been launched by Charnwood Borough Council to improve residents’ on line experience. The site has been refreshed to make it easier for customers to find information, make payments, request services and report issues. Residents can access a wide variety of services on the Council website, anything from reporting a missed bin or fly tipping, to paying council tax or submitting planning applications. The Council hope customers find the new-look site easier to use but they are always interested in feedback as its improvement is an ongoing process. I am grateful to one resident in my Ward, who has already sent some observations to the Council about the new-website. Deborah Taylor... Latest News Borough Councillor for Anstey & County Councillor for Bradgate Division 6 Geary Close, Anstey LE7 7LW - Tel: 0116 2350126 Email: Cllr.Deborah.Taylor@charnwood.gov.uk & Deborah.Taylor@leics.gov.uk Facebook: www.facebook.com/CllrDTaylor - Twitter: @CllrDTaylor

August has been a quieter month with both the Borough and County Councils having a summer recess. I was fortunate to be able to get away for nine days and enjoyed a bit of a rest and a recharge of the batteries. Things are slowly picking up and my diary is full until Christmas (sorry to mention the C word)! September is a month full of village shows and fetes in my Division and I enjoy being out and about meeting residents. During August, I did do some IT training as we are being provided with new devices by Charnwood Borough Council to enable us to access our agendas for meetings via an App to save printing and postage costs. We are also moving over to Microsoft 365, where all our documents will be stored on the ‘Cloud’ enabling them to be assessable from anywhere. This is a big change but I feel it will be for the better when I get the hang of it!

Loogabarooga Loughborough will host the major Loogabarooga Festival of Incredible Illustrations and Brilliant Books this October with a range of literary events and shows for children and families across six days. The festival will also be celebrating 80 years of the Beano, the longest-running British children’s comic with a themed exhibition. Loogabarooga is for families who love books and illustrated literature, and will take place at venues around Loughborough from 18th - 23rd October 2018. This year, some of the nation’s best-loved authors and illustrators will offer wacky workshops, splendid stories and hilarious live performances to bring the world of children’s literature to life. Charnwood Museum will be hosting a specially commissioned exhibition of Comic Art celebrating the Beano with lots of special Beano workshops including Dennis the Menace and Minnie the Minx taking place throughout the festival. Author John Hegley and illustrator Neal Layton will present the tale of Stanley’s Stick live and Clare Elsom, the illustrator of the bestselling Flying Fergus series, will introduce her brand-new series, Horace and Harriet. This year, a new Beauty and the Beast hand-painted book bench will be unveiled in the Market Place to join the nine other special benches located throughout the town, featuring some of the nation’s favourite Ladybird titles including Shopping with Mother, Cinderella and Bunnikins. Loogabarooga 2018 will also have an extended schools

My next residents’ surgery will be held on 15th September from 10am until 12 noon. This is a countywide surgery and will be held at Jubilee Hall, Stadon Road, Anstey. Therefore, if you have any concerns within my Bradgate Division, please do come along for a chat, tea and biscuits will be available. Edward Argar MP is hoping to join me.

World War One Charnwood Borough Council will be supporting a series of events on Sunday 11th November 2018 to mark 100 years since the end of World War One. In addition to the annual remembrance parade in Loughborough, a Charnwood Heritage Plaque will be unveiled in Loughborough Market Place as a lasting reminder of the soldiers who gathered there before going to war. Other events in the town centre include a live showcase event supported by a big screen in the Market Place, a tea dance and exhibition at Loughborough Town Hall, Century of Stories at Charnwood Museum and a procession of a life size model of Charnwood’s very own warhorse, Songster, which will be covered in poppies handmade by local school children. There will also be a lighting of a beacon in Queen’s Park at 7pm as part of a nationwide beacon lighting scheme. If you are hosting a remembrance Sunday parade or are planning on lighting a beacon, please contact the Business Support Team on neighbourhoods.communities@charnwood .gov.uk or by phone on 01509 634710. The Council will then add the information to its dedicated World War One commemoration webpage www.charnwood.gov.uk/WW1.

Member Grants In my last couple of reports, I have tried to promote the Member Grants on offer for each Borough Councillor from Charnwood Borough Council. I am delighted to have awarded some of my £1,000 to two local groups in Anstey. I have approved £300 to Anstey Community Library towards providing CCTV and £250 to Anstey Local History Society towards a projector and projector screen. I still have £450 left to spend, so if any local groups

Numerous residents contacted me regarding the fencing that has been erected by the side of Rothley Brook. I reported this to Leicester City and Leicestershire County Councils (LCC). LCC contacted the Environment Agency due to the flood risk with altering this area. A response was received from the Environment Agency and an Asset Inspector visited the site. The Environment Agency has confirmed that the fencing work adjacent to the King William Bridge would have required a flood risk activity permit. Their Asset Inspector has checked the works and in this instance the works appear to have only a minimal impact on flood risk, so the Environment Agency have confirmed that they do not intend to undertake enforcement action. They will be speaking to the Nomads Football Club to ensure that no further works are carried out without the correct permits. Leicester City Council are investigating the works within the city boundary and they too are liaising with the club in an attempt to prevent any further works taking place without the relevant permissions and to ensure that any issues are dealt with appropriately. I have also asked Leicester City Council to confirm if any damage has happen or is likely to happen to King Williams Bridge, as this is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. I am still waiting for a response.

Bus Stop Relocation, Anstey I have been working on the relocation of the bus stop on Leicester Road, Anstey for many months. We have received the draft plan and this is now with Anstey Parish Council. This will go out for public consultation in the near future but the Parish Council would like to hear your views in an informal consultation before we go to the formal consultation. The Parish will have a stall at the Anstey Gala on Saturday 8th September 2018, the draft plan will be available to view, and your comments are welcome. The plan will also be available to view at Jubilee Hall on 11th September 2018 from 12 noon until 7pm. If you are not able to attend either of these two dates and are keen to view the relocation plan and submit your comments, the plan is available on the Community noticeboard at Jubilee Hall, Anstey.

There are already several schemes running in other villages within my Division and they provide a great service for their residents. There has been one meeting held in Anstey but we need more people to come forward who are prepared to take part in the speed watch campaign. Without enough people to operate the speed guns and do the administration in the team this will not get off the ground.

Bradgate Road, Anstey. There are some planned road closures in Anstey with the main Bradgate Road being shut for a long period. This is for Severn Trent’s investment to replace old and tired smaller water pipes that feed homes and businesses across the county. The investment totals £24 million for Leicestershire and will ensure the security of water supplies for the future. The closure dates are as follows:

➢ Phase 2: closed between Groby Road and The Nook on 4th October 2018 for up to 4 weeks. Groby Road will remain open during both closures. Hollow Road has already been closed for 3 weeks and following the Bradgate Road closure, the following roads will then be closed for the same new piping:

I am taking part this year in the Memory Walk 2018 run by Alzheimer’s Society. The walk will take place on Sunday 30th September 2018 at Abbey Park at 11am. I am joining the ‘Pointy Nose’s Team’ and we will be taking our sighthound dog, Duke, on the walk with us. If anyone would like to support me and donate to Alzheimer’s Society, please go to JustGiving.com and search for my name.

➢ The Close (November/ December 4 weeks)

Did you know‌

Hollow Road closure has affected some buses and the same will happen with Bradgate Road and Link Road closures. Please see the notices that will be placed at the bus stops. Local residents and businesses should receive further written correspondence from Severn Trent nearer the closure dates. I receive many emails regarding speeding in our villages. Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society The final summer outing for Thurcaston and Cropston Local History Society was to Beaumanor Hall. Our guide John told us the history and showed us the house and grounds. What we see today is the Victorian house with obvious signs of its more recent past. After the Norman Conquest William the Conqueror gave the land to his nephew as a hunting estate, but the first house was not built until 14th century. The estate was purchased by the Herrick family in the 1550s. The first Sir William made his fortune in gold, silver and jewellery. Each subsequent owner was also called Sir William, when the 6th Sir William died without a male heir the 7th, a bachelor from Wolverhampton inherited. In the 1830-40’s he pulled down the Georgian house (which no one had liked) and engaged a well-known architect of the time William Railton (Nelson’s Column) to build a new one. With a quote of £6,000 the house eventually came in over budget at £37,000! Our tour started in the bar – originally the office from which Sir William ran the estate. When he fell in a hunting accident (at the age of 82) he was brought back to the office and died with his wife beside him. It was the first time she had been allowed into the office. She continued to run the estate until her own death in 1915. In 1939 it was requisitioned by the War Office (and later bought by the Army) and used as a listening station and centre for military intelligence during World War II. More recently in the 1970’s the hall was bought by Leicestershire County Council (LCC) to be used (and remains) as an education and conference centre. The Library and the Morning Room retain much of their Victorian splendour with heavily decorated and carved wooden ceilings and marble fireplaces, however a similar ceiling in the drawing room did not survive the army occupation. The magnificent stained glass window illuminating the Grand Hall and staircase was boarded up during this period and remains unscathed. Upstairs the grand proportions can be seen, but the rooms have been repurposed first by the army and later by LCC. Following a refreshment break we headed down to the cellars to see the working areas of a great house, including the bread kitchen, laundry rooms and meat preparation room. One cellar has been set up as an air raid shelter, providing atmosphere for the final section of the tour. In the grounds are a number of outbuildings that were part of the WWII listening station (Station Y) which intercepted and forwarded messages to Bletchley Park. These were made to look like agricultural buildings and farm cottages to disguise their real purpose from the air. We saw inside Morse Cottages which had been used by radio operators. This concluded an extensive and most interesting tour.

Bunnies Galore On the morning of Sunday 30th September you can attempt a serious 10K or a fun 3K in the beautiful Beacon Country Park at Woodhouse Eaves. Whether you run for the enjoyment of it or sponsored for charity, both runs are suitable for all abilities and are entirely off-road along woodland pathways and bridleways although only the 10K includes hill climbs. There is also the possibility of 4 friends running together as a relay team where no-one runs more than 3K but the team covers the whole 10K. Everyone finishing gets a medal and there will be a host of prizes as well as the opportunity for a warm-down massage. If you simply want to watch or to take the family, there will be hot food and drinks, and a play ground for the children. The event is organised every year by The Rotary Club of Loughborough Beacon and full details are available at www.beaconbunnyrun.org

The next meeting will take place in the Harrison Room, All Saints’ Church, Thurcaston, on Tuesday 18th September at 7.30pm, Anne Horton & Stephen Burrows will tell the story of Cropstone House Farm. Please see the website for more details. http://www.thurcastoncropstonhistory.org.uk

Burning calories as you garden THE AVERAGE British gardener burns 51,428 calories a year in their garden, and mowing the lawn is one of the highest ways of using energy – about 600 calories a month. Mowing the grass takes 5.7 calories per metre. Weeding takes 4.5 calories, as does potting plants. Digging burns 5 calories per metre, while raking uses only 3.8 calories a metre. Gardening has long been known to be extremely good for you – giving you a chance to be outside, time to think, and beneficial exercise – all at the same time.

Stone the crows it’s that time of year again! The children are back at school, nights are drawing in (even if we don’t want to accept the fact), the harvest is being gathered in and the scarecrows are back in Newtown Linford for the Annual Village Scarecrow Festival Weekend which this year takes place on 29th and 30th September. A delightful array of Scarecrows will be on display in the village throughout the weekend and a map to guide you around the village on our scarecrow trail will be available to purchase for 50p. Vote for your favourite scarecrow in the “People’s Choice” category with the prize giving ceremony taking place on Sunday at 4pm in the Village Hall (everyone welcome to attend), when our ever popular raffle will also be drawn. This has been a very challenging year for gardens and gardeners all over the country, with the high temperatures and drought. However, Harlow Carr was splendid and very enjoyable. 

Part of a woodland walk. Perfect for a quiet stroll

The famous Bettys Tea Room of Harrogate is also now at Harlow Carr. There are often long queues at Bettys, but those who braved the queues were rewarded with a special atmosphere and high quality food and drink. Those who decided not to queue were also able to get a taste of Bettys at the café in the main garden. 

Part of the main borders with its blocks of colour

In recent years new main borders have been developed at Harlow Carr with stunning perennial displays. These borders use the idea of blocks of colour to great effect. The natural stream running through Harlow Carr is a delightful area, as is the woodland area. The kitchen garden was very full with a very wide range of vegetables and fruit. There is also a large and very impressive alpine house with many special delicate plants.

Our visit was in the school summer holidays and there were many young children running   around and enjoying the space and outdoor activities.

A view of the planting by the stream

A number of Club members were unable to resist the shop and plant centre and many plants made the return journey with us. The Gardening Club meets in the Thurcaston and Cropston Memorial Hall 

Borough Councillor Report Cllr John J. Sutherington. Ward Councillor. Anstey. 43 George Street, Anstey, Leicester LE7 7DT. 0116 2204643. M 07939070603. - Email:- cllr.john.sutherington@charnwood.gov.uk Hello everybody. What a great summer, although too hot for me I’m afraid! However, despite being very poorly I have managed to stay at home thanks mainly to my lovely Lynda, the district nurses and weekly blood transfusions to keep me topped up!

STANDARDS Are you, like me? Getting just a little bit fed up with some of the adverts that are appearing on the TV? Those that come to mind are the woman pretending to be pregnant and she never really is and the one where the elderly woman walks into the shop for her Lottery ticket to be checked only to find out, wrongly, that she has won nothing when really she has won the jackpot. This is all to try and sell a mattress! But the most irritating is the little girl who goes into the newsagent to buy a bar of chocolate for her mum with trinkets and plastic toys. This, to me, gives out all the wrong messages.

ON THE SPORTING SIDE Well done to Anstey Nomads for winning their first ever FA Cup tie, beating Hinckley Football Club. They won 4-3 after extra time at Cropston Road. And, in their quest for Division 5 West of the Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket League, Anstey and Glenfield CC have won again. After 18 games, they still lead the division with 362 points, ahead of close rivals Kirby Muxloe 2. 348 and Grace Dieu Park 337. In their latest game, Kiran Nair became the 5th AGCC batsman to score a century this season.

NEW SET UP? At a recent overview scrutiny group meeting

we had the chance to look at the proposed changes envisaged for the future of Leicestershire, Rutland and the East Midlands. We all thought that, providing the changes were all done in the “best possible taste” for the counties concerned, and not for one or two power grabbers, then we could perhaps agree; but it’s a long way off.

THE SCAM I have heard no more from Santander and am more than disappointed with the minimal response from Action for Fraud. Fellow musician and drummer in one of my previous bands, Phil Scaysbrook, as set up a Crowd Funding Page on the Just Giving website https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/joh n-sutherington-bank-scam. Phil felt that this might be a way of retrieving at least some of the stolen money so if you did want to help, it would be greatly appreciated. If by any chance I am able to retrieve my lost savings, I plan to donate any money raised between Anthony Nolan and Loros, who have both been excellent in the support they have given me and my family over the last 5 years. I haven’t given up on this and am in the process of appealing to the Financial Ombudsman for further investigation. I’ll keep you posted with any updates and once again, be vigilant with any phone calls from companies.

THE NOOK This continues to be a concern to myself and many others, especially Mrs Doreen Smith who has had yet another narrow escape trying to cross the road to church. Thankfully she was unscathed, if a little shook up.

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE LINFORD Another resounding success at Newtown Linford, this time the charity was SAAFA, the armed forces charity who provide lifelong support to men and women in the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army and Royal Air Force. I was sorry I could not attend but illness prevented this. Host Vinyl Micky, ably supported by fellow Buskateers Brian and Linda, kept it all together and a great night was had by all. Next stop, New Year’s Eve at Birstall Golf Club. Be quick, tickets are being stolen fast…?!!

COUNCILLOR GRANT I was happy to support along with my fellow councillor Deborah Taylor the CCTV application for Anstey library, and the grant has been accepted by officers from officers. Aprox £ 600. Easy peasy! Until the next time, yours,

Cllr John J Sutherington ☺ Always a pleasure, never a chore.

Plastic Straws Suck! Did you know plastic straws will be about on the planet long after we have gone? These plastics are choking our wildlife and oceans. 425 million of the plastics straws destined for landfill annually escape the system and end up in our waterways, then inevitably our oceans. It is because of single use plastics entering our oceans that over 800 species of marine animals are recognised as endangered! Plastic debris is believed to kill around 100,000 marine animals each year! The WWF say by the time the UK government ban single-use plastics in 2025, 20 billion more plastic straws will have entered our oceans. I think this is unacceptable and action should be taken sooner! I would like all the pubs and cafes in Anstey to minimise their usage of single use plastics such as straws. In all reality, do we need a straw in our drinks? Could we use a

biodegradable wooden stirrer for mixer drinks, use paper straws or preferably choose to sip your drink in stead of sucking? I have tested paper straws and found they biodegrade in 2 weeks – ‘Biodegradable’ plastic straws still take months, even years to fully degrade, and there are concerns about the chemicals they degrade into. Regular plastic straws do NOT break down in the environment ever. I am James Underwood and for my Bronze DofE I am campaigning to encourage the refreshment providers of Anstey to be a lead-

ing force against the use of single use plastics. I have distributed information and samples of paper straws to the local pubs and cafes. If you are visiting one of our pubs or cafes, please try to refuse a straw or ask for a paper one. We are all concerned when we see the images of animals in distress as their lives have been hindered or put to an early end because of plastic pollution, but to some, it seems far, far away. By refusing plastic straws, this is one of the many steps we can take to reduce the chance more animals will suffer a painful fate that the human race has brought upon them. The sooner we act, the better. The sooner we act, the sooner we save the environment – while it still can be saved. If you are a refreshment provider in Anstey and you would like one of my campaign packs or would like more information please contact me at houndboy119@outlook.com .
