St. James Monday Group There may be a general 'lull' after the activities of Christmas and New Year, but members of St. James Monday Group are looking forward to 2019; and welcoming in the New year with a meal at Birstall Golf Club, which will be a a good chance for us to re-group and think about the year to come, and the charity we will wish to support during 2019. The nominations for the charity will be given by members during our February meeting (on the 11th). This evening we will also be having a talk by Ruth Cranmer called 'The foot at risk'. For anyone who has had a 'bit of bother' with their feet, or who wishes to avoid trouble, this should prove invaluable, as well as interesting. Time marches on, however, and March will see our AGM. This is a good time for you to join us, to see who we are and what we do, so please do come along to the Age Concern rooms in the Village Hall then and on the second Monday of every month. We will be pleased to welcome you.

The Big Garden Birdwatch
Rothley/ Birstall Birdwatching Club presents:
Saturday 26 January to Monday 28 January important insight into how our wildlife is faring. The Big Garden Birdwatch alerted us to the decline in song thrush numbers. Back in 1979 song thrushes comfortably occupied the number ten spot, but numbers in gardens have declined by around 70% over the last 40 years, and they have dropped to 27th in the rankings.
A PEEK BEHIND THE CURTAIN – WILDLIFE IN N0-MAN’S LAND By Tim Sexton For over 40 years the Iron Curtain divided Europe. Along stretches the physical barrier was set 5km inside a country’s actual border, creating a no man’s land, free from human habitants. With little disturbance, wildlife thrived. When the iron Curtain fell many of these areas became protected as national parks. Tim looks at the wildlife of one such area, Podyji National Park in the Czech Republic and on the borders of Austria. Tuesday, February 12th 2019 at 7.30p.m. The Rothley Centre, 12 Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley, LE7 7PR. Members are free, visitors £2.50. New members and visitors are always welcome. Ample free car parking on site. Further information from Jack Wootton on 0116 2692480.

Did you know that the Big Garden Birdwatch started out as an event for children? Back in 1979, the RSPB joined forces with BBC’s Blue Peter and called on children to let us know what birds they saw in their garden. Hundreds took up the call, and in those pre-digital days, dutifully posted in their findings. The early signs of success were there, with the RSPB team faced with an impressive 34 mail bags full of post to sort. The popularity of the Birdwatch has grown yearon-year and now forty years later it is the world’s largest wildlife survey, with around half a million regularly taking part. It is one of the biggest citizen science events around, as borne out by the stats. • Over 8 million hours have been spent watching garden birds since the Big Garden Birdwatch began in 1979. • The total number of birds counted as part of the Big Garden Birdwatch since 1979, is more than 130 million • In 2018, a staggering 8 million birds were counted during the Big Garden Birdwatch It’s an impressive amount of data, and the great thing about 40 years of the Big Garden Birdwatch is that we now have four decades of comparative results. The findings provide an
It’s a change that Ian recognises in his own experiences of the Birdwatch: “I always enjoy seeing a song thrush and love listening their song. They were always in the top ten seen during Big Garden Birdwatch but more recently they have dropped out, and we don’t see so many.” In recent years the Big Garden Birdwatch has expanded beyond birds. Since 2014 we’ve asked people about other wildlife that visits their garden. Through this, we now know that only 25% of people see hedgehogs in their garden at let one a month. This year we’re asking people to tell us about their sightings of badgers, foxes, grey squirrels, red squirrels, muntjac deer, roe deer, frogs and toads. The Birdwatch is also not without its oddities and sometimes some very unusual visitors turn up, including an American robin in Putney, a black-throated thrush on the Isle of Bute, and a common rosefinch in Yorkshire. In 2014, a yellowrumped warbler, which usually spends winter in South America, turned up in a garden in Durham. Less unusual but no less thrilling was the explosion of waxwings visiting gardens in 2017. Usually found feasting on berries in Scandinavia, these winter visitors come to the UK when there is a lack of food in their native countries. In 2017, waxwings were seen in around 11 times more gardens compared with the last couple of years.

BIRSTALL AND DISTRICT ART SOCIETY “BEST PICTURE IN SHOW”
National Nest Box Week 14th – 21st February IF YOU like birds, now is the time to help the next generation get started. And so next month will see thousands of us shakily climbing ladders against the sides of our houses, garages and trees, to install cosy nest boxes. And soon our tenants will arrive: blue tits, robins, nuthatches, pied wagtails, sparrows, to starlings, tawny owls and even great spotted woodpeckers. National Nest Box Week was started by the British Trust for Ornithology in order to encourage the conservation of our breeding birds. Nest boxes are desperately needed, as natural nest sites for birds such as holes in trees or old buildings are disappearing fast, as gardens are ‘tidied’ and old houses are repaired. It really is worth the trouble to put up a nest box. If you hang one within sight of your kitchen window, you will have hours of fun in observing the young feathered families. Visit the website at https://www.bto.org/about-birds/nnbw/make-a-nest-box for details of how to build a nestbox, where to site it, etc.
The "Best Picture in Show" as voted for by the public went to Pam Powell with her painting “Blue Garden” and was announced at the Birstall and District Art Society AGM on 11th December 2018. The picture opposite shows Pam Powell with Sue Wakerley & Catherine Laughton.

Birstall Parish Council’s Christmas hampers cheer for older residents Many years ago, Birstall Parish Council were Trustees of a local charity and they upheld some of responsibilities of that charity when it ceased to function. The original Charity was set up to meet the needs of the elderly and needy in the village and the Parish Council chose to maintain the existing beneficiary list for receipt of a Christmas Hamper. Over the last few years the list has naturally declined and when this was discussed at a recent Council meeting, the Council took the decision that this heart-warming initiative should continue. They all agreed that Christmas time is a time of giving and thinking of others and that this gesture captures the very essence of the season, as it spreads joy to some of the most vulnerable people in the Parish. They decided to try and develop the list up to a maximum of twenty beneficiaries each year and they are asking for your help by seeking nominations from the community to enable them to continue to do this in December 2019.

The Parish Council are asking for you to nominate someone who is over 70 years of age that you feel deserves or is in need of some Christmas Cheer. Maybe they live alone and/or are on a low income, or for some other reason that you feel makes them eligible to receive a Christmas Hamper. The nomination form is available on the Parish Council’s website: www.birstallparishcouncil.org.uk for you to download and complete, you can email your completed nomination form to admin@birstallpc.org.uk or you can telephone the office on: 0116 267 6191 and we will post one to you or you can call in to the office in person to collect a hardcopy of the nomination form.
Nominations will close on 31 October each year to enable the hampers to be ordered and prepared ready for delivery in December of each year.
Help our HEDGEHOGS – or lose them forever THE UK has lost half of its hedgehog population since the year 2000. The Christian conservation charity, A Rocha UK, is out to stop the decline. ‘Project Hedgehog’ is one result, a joint initiative between A Rocha UK and the Lea Brook Valley Project. ‘Project Hedgehog’ provides purpose-built, cat-proof hedgehog boxes for private gardens. There are also detailed information leaflets on how to make gardens hedgehog-friendly. ‘We need to do this, for God, for nature and for people – and we need your help,’ says Andy Atkins, CEO of A Rocha UK.

New Year New Start! Volunteers required for vital roles to support older people in helping Royal Voluntary Service is one of the largest voluntary service organisations in the country and inspires and enables 20,000 volunteers to give their skills, experience, energy and time to help people in need in hospitals, at home and in the community. Locally in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland we support approximately 2,000 older people per year with our services.
These services include helping older people who have been discharged from hospital to rebuild their confidence and remain independent once they return home, providing transport to help with shopping, attending hospital appointments or support with social opportunities. In addition our volunteers provide valuable company and friendship as well as making sure that the older person is safe and well.
Teresa Gibbs – Commissioned Services Operations Manager for Royal Voluntary Service: “The demand for our services is always increasing and as a result of this we are looking to recruit more volunteers to allow us to continue to offer the support to local older people. Our volunteers make a significant and positive difference to older people’s lives and without their incredible contribution we would certainly not be able to provide the current level and range of services.

Chris Cordle, a retired NHS medical psychologist from Leicester, is a Royal Voluntary Service volunteer. She delivers the charity’s Home from Hospital service which helps settle older people back into home after a hospital stay. She says: “I missed the satisfaction of working with people - I loved that part of my job. Volunteering has filled that gap. I enjoy working with older people, hearing their stories and helping them to achieve their aims. Much of my career was about motivating and helping people, and that’s what I’m still doing now. January - time for the gym
Warning for lettings agents and property managers after company fined Lettings agents in Charnwood are being urged to ensure they are aware of their legal responsibilities after a business was fined by the borough council. All lettings agents and property managers are required by law to be part of a government-approved redress scheme which helps resolve disputes between tenants and landlords. Charnwood Borough Council discovered one letting agent in the borough was not part of a redress scheme in August. The offence carries a maximum fine of ÂŁ5,000. The company had been part of a scheme which had closed but it had failed to join another one. However, after being contacted by the Council, the company signed up to a redress scheme. The Council fined the company ÂŁ673 to reflect the seven-week period that it was not part of a scheme. Redress schemes give tenants and landlords independent adjudication of disputes. The Council monitors lettings agents and property managers to ensure that they are registered with a redress scheme. Cllr Margaret Smidowicz, the Council’s lead member for regulatory services, enforcement and licensing, said: “I hope this serves as a reminder to lettings agents and property managers that they have a legal duty to be part of a redress scheme and we will not hesitate to issue fines if they are not. “Being part of a scheme is cheaper than paying a fine and ultimately the schemes are there to help tenants and landlords in the private sector housing market.â€? If you are concerned that your letting agent or property manager does not belong to an approved redress scheme, you should contact the private housing team on 01509 634651 or email private.housing@charnwood.gov.uk.

UP TO A million of us will join a gym next month. Up to 800,000 of us will have given it up by February. But before you return to the couch, why not consider the following: • Only do exercises that you enjoy. Have fun, and nothing else! Don’t torture yourself on the cross trainers if you prefer salsa dancing. Your endorphins will still be released, leaving you stimulated, inspired and generally better. • Start small. Okay, you like swimming, but why aim for 20 lengths your first time in the pool? You will never go back. Start instead with just two lengths, and then reward yourself with a coffee. Next time do three, and so on. Always end with a reward. • Go at the same time, on the same days. Make it a part of your week. You will meet the same people, and it will begin to feel natural. Make it a habit. • Be friendly. A lot of people are intimidated when they first go to a gym. So, the first week, smile at people, the second week try saying hello, and gradually you will get on friendly terms with enough of them so that you feel comfortable. • Don’t forget the spiritual. Away from the gym, give yourself time for your inner, spiritual well-being as well on a daily basis. • Keep your mind active. Read books or join an evening class. Do puzzles. Mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness. • Be creative. Make the space around you more beautiful in some way - decorate, paint, sew, knit, or even just add a vase of flowers. • Give some things up. As well as putting good things into your life, take some less-good things OUT of your life. What in your life is draining your time and energy, and giving little in return? Get rid of it!

Are your children gamblers? HERE IS a sobering fact: more children have placed bets in the past week than have drunk alcohol, smoked or taken drugs. Such are the findings from an audit by the Gambling Commission. It also found that one in seven 11to16-year-olds bet regularly, staking an average of £16 a week. And those who start betting young are more like to have issues as adults, warns the charity Gamcare. The sad truth is that gambling has never been easier, with online outlets available 24 hours a day. And once a young person accesses them, the sites bombard them with marketing prompts for ‘boosted’ odds and ‘free bets’. Youthsite, a research organisation for 16-to 30-year olds estimates that more than 100,000 students are in debt due to gambling, with one in four of those owing more than £10,000. Although the Government has promised to (eventually) reduce the FOBT (Fixed Odds Betting Terminal) maximum stakes from £100 to £2, there are fears that the reduction will itself only increase the attraction of betting online.
The Beatles’ last concert ... on a roof, 50 years ago IT WAS 50 YEARS ago on 30th January 1969, that the Beatles gave their last public performance – on the roof of Apple Studios in London. It was their first truly live show since their final tour ended on 29th August 1966, at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. They had become less popular in the US after John Lennon’s controversial remark in an interview that ‘we’re more popular than Jesus now’. In the rooftop concert, which lasted about 45 minutes, Get Back was the final song, and in the recorded version Lennon can be heard saying: ‘I’d like to say thank you … I hope we passed the audition.’ It was cold and windy, with a threat of rain. Lennon borrowed Yoko Ono’s fur coat, and Ringo wore his wife Maureen’s red raincoat. The group also varied their classic stage placements: Lennon took the middle spot, with Harrison to his left. Keyboard player Billy Preston guested. The police are widely criticised for breaking up the session, but in fact they were nearby and could have shut it down after the first song; instead they let it continue and gave the band ten minutes’ warning that they were about to intervene after complaints from neighbouring businesses. The Beatles broke up formally in April 1970.
Help for your family’s eating disorders
A CHARITY, Tastelife, has been set up to help support families struggling with eating disorders. Aimed at both sufferers and their carers, it was the brainchild of two Church of England volunteers, whose own families were deeply traumatised by the problem. Tastelife offers courses run over eight weeks to help families with guidance on how to cope on a daily basis, and how to get onto the path of recovery. The courses are now on offer in 27 locations around the country, including Leicester and Hinckley. A new course, Awareness of Eating Disorders will be delivered in schools to help young people understand more about their attitudes and behaviour towards food. More details at: www.tastelifeuk.org/

With an ever growing programme of events aimed at families and children now seems the perfect time to launch this brand new festival. 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year, but many of us are too afraid to talk about it. Starting a conversation about mental health might seem daunting but simply sending a text, checking in on a friend or sharing something on social media can break the ice. Helen Baxter, Activities Coordinator said: “We are taking part in Time to Talk Day because mental health is a topic that we should all feel able to talk about. Having these all important conversations can make a big difference to so many people. The more we talk - the more lives we can change. Drop in for a cup of tea, a chat and pin a note to our community pledge wall!’ The Free drop in event will take place on:- Thursday 7th February from 10.00am – 12noon at Ulverscroft Grange, Whitwick Road, Ulverscroft, Leicestershire, LE67 9QB for more details please contact Helen Baxter on 01530 244914 or visit www.shuttlewoodclarke.org
Anyone For Tennis (and much more) It has been a busy year for Gynsill Tennis Club. There is social tennis at the club 3 times a week which is really enjoyable. Also the men, ladies and juniors have all been playing in matches in the local leagues. As well as playing tennis the club members have been on a walking weekend, had a boules tournament and bbq in the tennis club car park, a quiz night and enjoyed a pie night at Beaumanor Hall. The club had a stall at the Anstey Gala (you may have seen us there). Everybody that came to our stall had fun trying to hit tennis balls through different holes with prizes for the best scores. Gynsill Tennis Club is a friendly and welcoming club. If you are thinking about starting to play tennis, haven’t played for a while or are a regular player why not come down and see us. The club is on the corner of Gynsill Close and Gorse Hill. Saturday afternoon is club afternoon. You can also visit the club website www.gynsilltennis.club or contact our Head Coach, Adam Charlton, at charltontennis@yahoo.co.uk
